honestly, the way i see it yeah Tsuna was kind of self-centred and socially awkward the way every middle schooler is, but he also had quite good reason to be wary of these people.
namely, he never actually asked for anyone's friendship here. he came into contact with every single one of these people because Reborn kept pushing them towards him, while being very open towards Tsuna that it was for. a purpose that Tsuna explicitly, wholeheartedly disagrees with (aka becoming decimo). and all of these people seem to be more or less onboard with the trajectory Reborn was putting Tsuna's life on, (like Gokudera literally refers to him as Thenth even when Tsuna keeps asking him to stop!).
Tsuna has seemingly never had friends before this either, and is convinced that nobody would want to genuinely be his friend because of his low self esteem. So i don't think it would be unreasonable for him to question our these people really were his friends at all? or were they "the future vonglola decimo"s friends?
Also, quite a few people who come into his life are openly mafia and proud of that fact, making it known often. As an at the time fairly cowardly civilian preteen i can see how Tsuna would be uncomfortable around, and not want to associate with, these people.
but yeah i think their friendships r cute and all i just can see why it also wouldn't be like Tsuna being a good friend in the beginning; mainly because he wasn't really sure he wanted to be a friend at all?? yeah, just my two cents.
extremely hot take but I’m here to burst everyone’s bubble and say that Tsuna was actually a shit friend, but also I can respect that he’s a realistically average middle schooler and thus like many other average middle schoolers he’s not a perfect human being, and thus can be an immature asshole to his friends
namely Haru and Gokudera, who literally worship the ground he walks on, and he has the gall to roll his eyes and complain whenever they came to see him?? on the other hand, Tsuna’s character development was truly legendary because he didn’t just become physically and emotionally stronger but he learned to appreciate his friends a liiiiittle bit more
