La construcción del faro de Tossa se aprobó en 1908 para que sirviera de recalada y para indicar la proximidad del puerto de Sant Feliu de Guíxols.

Desde el extremo sur de la playa parte el camino, de 600 m, de acceso restringido para vehículos, que lleva a la entrada.

Este faro, original de 1917, fue el último que se construyó en la Costa Brava (unos 4 años después que el de s'Arenella, en el Port de la Selva), y se hizo para salvar la oscuridad existente entre los de Calella de Mar (al sur, en la comarca del Maresme) y Palamós. Su situación no podía ser más excepcional.
