premier pro: the poetic documentary

The poetic documentary task has probably been one of my favourites so far. The brief required that we create a poetic documentary at 25fps which is exactly 60 seconds long. We were given several themes to pick from; my chosen theme was "seen strangely through glass," which I decided to interpret metaphorically in order to represent how I experience derealization (Mayoclinic describes symptoms of derealization as including "Feeling emotionally disconnected from people you care about, as if you were separated by a glass wall" and notes that it can include "Surroundings that appear distorted, blurry, colorless, two-dimensional or artificial, or a heightened awareness and clarity of your surroundings").

I had a lot of fun with this project! Because of the nature of the subject - and my prior experience with the software - I felt comfortable editing and was able to experiment a lot with distortion effects and overlays. The main things I used were a light flicker overlay from the website "Videezy" whose opacity I turned down very low to create muffled, distant effect; and Premier Pro's "Lens Distortion" function.

I utilised this by setting the footage's curvature at a negative, to create a sort of reverse fish-eye effect. I am so happy with this as it really emulates the way I visually experience the world.

One thing which didn't quite go to plan was the editing of the audio. Due to physical constraints (not having the time to access the library computers for as long as I needed, and my laptop refusing to run Premier Pro) I was unable to use prem for this, but figured I could utilise another software we've made use of since we started the module: Audacity. This turned out to be a mistake. When I made the decision to use Audacity - which is strictly for editing audio - I didn't think about how difficult it would be to time the audio mix to my already-edited footage. After a couple of hours of painstakingly pressing play on the audio on my laptop and the video on my phone simultaneously to make sure they lined up, I conceded defeat and moved across to a different software.

Capcut is laid out similarly to Premier Pro, and gave me free access to snip and line up my audio clips however I saw fit, admittedly with fewer customisation options. Because of the way this went I'm not 100% happy with my audio mix, as I would have liked to explored a wider range of effects, but I think it serves its purpose.

If I were to complete this project again, I would try to storyboard and have a clearer idea of what I wanted going in, so I'd be able to set myself deadlines for certain things and be able to complete the full project in Premier. Having too many ideas and being unable to pinpoint down exactly what I want to create seems to be a recurring issue for me, so I am going to research ways of narrowing down ideas so my next project is more efficient.

SFMMovie 6 Sketch is done!

So first off the rendering of the shot out of Blender took a lot less time then I thought it would when compared to ���Outside” as it all rendered out after an hour in total, meaning I could do all the post production work today instead of tomorrow! ^^

It’s been a while since I needed to do any VFX work in Natron; so it was nice to flex those muscles again after so long. Along with the obligatory lens flare for the sun; I made a cartoonish silhouette oval to sell the effect that Director is flying into the distance. For blurs to have soft edges around the shape like I envisioned, it was set to 20 and 30 respectively which gives off the nice look that I wanted.

The explosion effect is actually a bit of stock footage I found on a site called “Videezy”, and from there I used a “Transform” node to get it into position in the distance of the scene and had a “Merge” layer set to “Screen” to properly work with the alpha properties that the footage had (this took a lot of fiddling with to get it to work!); something I don’t normally work with!  

After that I rendered it out of Natron, import it into KDENLive for a test render to start audio mixing the sketch in Ardour. The sound effect for the explosion actually comes from Valve’s Source Engine with a reverb effect applied... Interestingly enough though; adding the reverb has modified the pitch to be slightly deeper then how you would hear it in Half-Life 2 or Portal, which I quite like honestly!

From there I added the colour grading, which involved desaturating shot 2 to be inline with shot 1, then the final refinements to hammer in the jokey-ness of the sketch!

And like that, 3 months of work comes to an end (the first 2 months it was allocated as a side project, leading about 8 hours of work during that time), but there is no chance rest - Since finishing the sketch at 1427hrs, I have created the audio for the next sketch and tomorrow I will start on the pre-production stuff! Exciting, but extremely busy times! =)

Youtube Kanalı Açmak aslında sanıldığı kadar zor değil..

Youtube… Dünyanın en çok izlenen video platformu. O kadar önemli bir platform ki dünyadaki insanların neredeyse tamamı youtube hakkında bilgi sahibi. Bir çoğumuz da Youtube’ye hayatımızda bir çok kez giriş yaptık, yüzlerce video izleyip bilgi edindik.

Ben Youtube’yi yaklaşık 2 aydır yayıncı olarak kullanıyorum. Gerçek anlamda uğraşarak, internetten edindiğim bilgilerle siz youtube izleyicileri için belgesel tadında videolar yapmaya çalışıyorum. Yalnız işin aslında gerçek anlamda dışarıdan bakıldığı kadar kolay olmadığını söylemem gerekiyor. Youtube’ye yüklenilen video 10 dakika sürüyor belki. Bir çay, kahve ile tamamen tüketilebiliyor. Ancak hazırlanma süreci hiç o kadar kısa olmuyor. 10 dakikalık kaliteli bir youtube videosunun hazırlanma süreci çok uzun ve sancılı bir süreç. Ben internetten edindiğim bilgilerle 2.5 aylık bir süreçte tamamen amatörce bazı videolar paylaştım. Şuan 3-4 tane videom var. Ancak bu iş gerçek anlamda istemek ile alakalı. Ayrıca motivasyon da çok önemli.

Motivasyon kaybolduğu an düşmeye başladığınız andır. Ben şu sıralar öyleyim. Çünkü videolarım beklediğim ilgiyi ve izlenme oranlarını yakalayamadı. Ama olsun bu bir hevesti benim için ve hayatımın bir döneminde Youtube’nin büyülü dünyasına kıyıdan köşeden bir giriş yaptım. En azından merhaba dedim.

The best free stock video sites 2018

A few well-placed snippets of high quality footage can really bring projects to life – whether they’re presentations, websites or your own home-made videos. 

Finding the right video clips can be tricky, though. Many stock video sites charge a subscription fee for their best content. Thankfully, there are also places where you can download high quality video clips completely free of charge for both personal and commercial use, with no royalties or strings attached.

We’ve put the best free stock photo sites under the microscope and picked those that offer the best combination of video quality, variety of clips, and flexible licensing.

It’s worth bearing in mind that even if a video clip is in the public domain, you shouldn’t use it to create that shows identifiable people in a bad light.

1. Pexels

Professional quality video clips with no strings attached

No attribution necessary

There are some truly spectacular videos available on Pexels – all under a Creative Commons 0 (ie public domain) license, which means you’re free to use them for any personal or commercial projects without attribution. 

The time-lapse videos are particularly lovely, and there are plenty of fun clips from GoPro-wearing divers and climbers. Pexels also include a handy ‘mockup’ category for footage of mobile devices with green screens that can be easily replaced via chroma keying.

Search results include premium videos from Shutterstock, but unlike most stock video sites, Pexels displays these at the bottom so you’re unlikely to mistake them for free clips.

Videos are provided in MP4 format in HD. The only drawback is the lack of clips in 4K, but if Full HD is enough for your project, Pexels should be your first stop.

If you need stock photos, Pexels also offers a great selection of stylish premium-quality stills under the same license.

2. Stock Footage for Free

Stock Footage for Free feels like the video equivalent of free stock photo site Unsplash, focusing on quality rather than quantity. The footage is extremely impressive; we particularly like the selection of landscapes and looping backgrounds.

You’re given a detailed description of the video so you can be sure it’s the right one before downloading it. This is a sensible decision; downloads can take a while because of the large file sizes. The site’s HD videos are provided in MOV format, but there aren’t currently any 4K clips available.

Video clips are free for personal and commercial use, unless it’s a seriously high-budget production. Stock Footage for Free provides a detailed license agreement that makes explicit all the intellectual property information you’re likely to need.

Before you can download files you’ll need to sign up for a free account or log in using Facebook. At the time of writing, an error meant that we were unable to log in using an email address, though the Facebook option worked fine. We’ve reached out to the company to find out if this is an issue that can be resolved.

3. Pixabay

A huge library of free stock video clips in MP4 format

Pixabay is best known as a resource for free stock photos, but is also has a great selection of video clips available to download and use, no strings attached. 

The videos are all submitted by Pixabay’s community of users, and are generally under a minute in length. The site is a good option for abstract images like clouds, as well as somewhat niche clips (the video of a man preparing pieces of beef is a particularly odd example). 

There’s a small selection of 4K video too, motion graphics, and some infinitely looping clips that are handy for websites.

All clips are provided free for personal or commercial use, with no attribution necessary. The files are provided in MP4 format, in a choice of resolutions.

4. Videezy

A wide range of high-quality clips, including fun aerial footage

Footage from Videezy is royalty free for personal and commercial use, but users are asked to credit ‘Videezy.com’ in their projects.

Most videos are provided in HD resolution, but there’s also a good selection of 4K clips – mostly landscape scenes and abstract clips rendered using Adobe After Effects.

The quality is mixed, but generally high. We particularly like the selection of aerial drone footage 

All videos are supplied in MP4 format, and you can see the resolution below the preview on the download page.

Keep an eye out for search results marked with a gold star; these are premium clips only available with an Shutterstock subscription. The first two rows of search results are also sponsored videos from Shutterstock, which again require a paid membership to download.

A community-based stock video that offers plenty of choice

Videvo offers thousands of videos contributed by its community of users. Quality is variable (a few clips have clearly been shot without a tripod) but they’re generally good, and there’s a huge selection to choose from so it’s highly likely you’ll find something suitable – even if it takes a little while.

If you’d like to contribute your own videos for others to download, you can do so after signing up for a free account.

Videos on Videvo fall under one of three licenses, so be sure to check which one applies to your chosen clip before you start working:

Videvo Standard License, which lets you use the clips in your own work without attribution, provided you don’t redistribute the footage.

Videvo Attribution License, which is the same as the Standard License, but requires you to credit the clip’s creator.

Creative Commons 3.0 Unported, which lets you share and adapt the clip, but requires you to credit the creator and indicate if you’ve made any changes.

Clips marked ‘Editorial use only’ can’t be used commercially, but those labelled ‘All projects and media’ can.

As with many free stock video sites, the top row of search results are actually premium samples from an advertiser (in this case Shutterstock). Scroll past these for Videovo’s own clips.

Some clips are provided as MP4 files, while others are delivered in QuickTime format. There’s a small selection of 4K clips, but half of these are Christmas-themed motion graphics. If you’re specifically looking for 4K video, you’re better off looking at one of the sites listed above.

Editing Process example

For the editing process, the way me and Ryan went about editing is that we would both edit our own version of the documentary and create our own draft with all the clips we have gathered. We would then show both our drafts to individuals who would give us feedback on how they can both be improved and what was the best aspects of each documentary draft. From there, we would combine (based on our focus groups, any audience feedback and our own opinions) the best parts of our documentary drafts together to get the best possible final cut.

While Ryan was using Sony Vegas Pro, for the editing process I used Lightworks, a free professional non-linear editing system that I considered an adequate enough editing software to produce a high-quality documentary. This post is just to show an example of how the editing process went. I will be talking about the most significant editing aspects during the Phase One stage of our project (to give an idea of how smooth the process was), any issues I encountered and how I overcame them.

Also https://www.videezy.com/ was used for random filler videos in case I didn’t have enough primary footage from ‘shots around Folkestone’

                                                   Phase One

The opening shot was one of the most significant shots, as it is the shot that would determine whether a viewer would be interested to continue watching the documentary. This means I need to make it an appealing shot, so what I did was display a British flag waving (courtesy of Videezy) with only the audio of the voice-over narration line “It is not a soldier’s duty to reason why; it is a soldier’s duty to do or die” so it stands out and has a dramatic impact on the viewer.

Another important editing action I carried out was while archive footage of soldiers on boats returning from Dunkirk, I added in background music called ‘Instinct’, which is the sound of drums building up. The effect this has is strong, as it helps build up tension while showing the archive footage and hearing the narration speaking the dialogue. I faded the audio of the background music as the end of the clip, to make a smoother transition into the quote of Winston Churchill that follows it.

An issue I encountered was while integrating the audio of the narrator and the background music, as ‘instinct’ was a lot louder than the narrator. This wasn’t what I desired as it was imperative the narrator was heard over the music, as he is telling the story of the documentary. What I did to remove this issue was take  both audio clips to an app called Audacity. What this app enabled me to do was increase the intensity of the audio of the narrator clip, while slightly decreasing the loudness of the background music, so the narrator can now be heard easily over the music (without drowning out the music entirely). The more I amplified the audio (in decibels), the louder the audio will be:

The last major stage was the title sequence of the documentary. I wanted the build-up to the title and the title itself to stand out as much as possible, to make the documentary look professional and interesting. The narration line was “This is the story of heroes and bravery, of hope and valour, of victory in defeat. This is the story of Operation Dynamo.” What I had in mind was to show different short clips of attractive shots from the ‘shots around Folkestone’, so it looks visually appealing while all the focus is on each line of dialogue. When the line “This is the story of Operation Dynamo” is spoken, that is when the shot overlooking Folkestone would show, with the title being displayed overhead. The font of the title is in Bernard MT Condensed, which is quite a bold font that stands out and looks professional.

This is the draft of the opening, to show what Phase One will look like in my draft of the documentary, and to show how well the editing process actually went:

The main issue with this is the transitions between clips, which is a reoccurring issue I encountered because every time I attempted to add a transition, I resulted with this pop-up box instead:

After spending hours trying to work around this problem, I decided the best course of action was to leave what transitions I could have in (basic cuts), and fix them later when me and Ryan combine our drafts later on.
