In Korea, the Christmas tradition was quite different from your country and if you had to be honest, you missed it a lot in those 3 years you’ve been here. You thought you kept those thoughts to yourself, you realized you failed on that.
Hongjoong (김홍중)
He had no idea they were planning this. All he knew about was his own gift to you, one he gave you already by midnight since he came to your house after schedule.
You are a collector, always has been, and he loved to indulge you whenever he could find an interesting piece and that he did. You were so excited by the vintage vinyls you barely slept the night before.
So to him, sitting on your couch, watching the scene unfold, was quite amusing. You, still sleepy, doing your best to be as excited as you would be if they came by one or two hours later and them, making an absolute chaos as they always did.
“You guys are actually insane”.
“I think you mean we are amazing, now get your jaw off the floor and open this”, one of them said and handed their collective gift to you.
The thing is, the boys also loved to indulge another collection you had. Todecide which signed album to get you was hard, so they got you all of them but the one you bought already, your boyfriend’s.
The moment your eyes landed on the cardboard box, you knew what it was, and you didn’t hesitate to sit on the floor of the living room and make an absolute mess. The box left aside, the wrapping paper and bubble wrap all over the place would make you lose your mind in any other occasion.
“No way, you guys did not have to…”
In front of you, there was the whole collection of the new Ateez album and as you analyzed it further, all of them were signed.
“Open them before you thank us”, Wooyoung’s tone should be the first indicator something was off to Hongjoong, but it wasn’t.
You didn’t need to be told twice and even made Jongho bring your scissors, so the package wouldn’t be slightly damaged as you took off the plastic.
You had a little routine as you opened a new album of theirs, the photocards were last, but all of them insisted you saw it first.
Hongjoong could tell you were excited for whoever may be on it, but he did wish it was one of his, another one for your long collection.
“Ah!”, you screamed as you turned it. “Yeosang!”, you announced smiling from ear to ear. “Look at you, this hairstyle looks so good…”, you said as you took a closer look.
Hongjoong felt a sour taste on his mouth. Right, it was true, anything looks good on Yeosang, that’s just a fact, but that’s what you always say to him and him only whenever he changes his hairstyle and comes running home to show you in person.
“Another one! I don’t have this one, it’s so pretty”, you showed them both photocards next to each other.
“Pretty”, Hongjoong huffed as he looked away.
“Did you say anything, hyung?”, San asked like the devil himself beside him.
San’s smile reflected on everybody else’s faces.
“No, nothing, just thinking out loud”, he brushed it off, but now all eyes were on him, including yours. “Let me help you to open those”, he moved to sit beside you and got his hands to work without waiting for an answer.
That was enough to make the attention back on you and your excitement, and he couldn’t help but smile watching you do your thing.
He sat straight, a new wave of hope as he finished taking the plastics off and making a line for you to grab. One of them has to be him, there is just no way you won’t pull his photocards.
So he waited and waited, but album after album, you got Jongho, then Wooyoung and Seonghwa. Yunho, you pulled Yunho before him. In his head he felt like murdering them all. It was clear it was on purpose by the 3rd time the photocards matched the sign on the cover.
“Love, you’re pouting”, you whispered to him when the boys were busy roasting and cringing at each other’s photos.
“No, I am not”, he whispered back, all wide-eyed and defensive, threatening to look at you in the eyes.
“You know you’re the prettiest in my eyes, right?”
“Am I? Prettier than Yunho’s outfit and Yeosang’s hairstyle?”, he didn’t budge when you hugged him nor when you put your head on his shoulder.
“Look at him sulking because she didn’t pull his pc”, Mingi said as he noticed you two on your own word.
“I’m not sulking!”
Seonghwa (박성화)
In hindsight, he told you this morning he had another surprise coming soon, so you expected something, but nothing close to this. He already made your entire year last night after he cooked all your home country food for Christmas, with your help as soon as you noticed his behavior. So what else could he do?
It was a huge box, San could barely hold it alone as one by one, they came in and greeted both of you.
“What is all of this? Better not be another prank”, you said as you glared at Yeosang, the perpetrator the last time.
He dared to giggle as the memories resurfaced and gestured no with both hands, loosing all his composure and so flustered to answer you properly without laughing. Your comment also got a chuckle out of the others, including Seonghwa, who also receive a threatening glare on his direction, but his innocent eyes could get him out of anything, so you let it go for now.
“Do you think we would be so mean to you on Christmas morning?”, Wooyoung said in such an offended tone with his left hand on his heart, like you just said you hated puppies or something.
“I don’t know what to expect from you guys anymore”, you said as serious as you could be watching his dramatics.
Hongjoong had to interfere and remind everyone of what they were doing there in the first place
“To do something nice and not to bicker some more, understood?”, he cut off Wooyoung, using that captain voice and as if it was magic, they all fell back in line.
You made space on the kitchen table to open the box there. Your best guess would be another box, a smaller one then another and another, with something inside the last one. Instead, there were carefully wrapped albums, a shit ton of them, filling more than half of the whole thing. You were speechless, then you screamed in a way none of them saw before, the fangirl scream.
“Oh my…”, you couldn’t finish.
“Now you can’t say we never did something nice for you”, Jongho said, his tone was flat, but his smile gave away the true affection he felt.
It was a lie you could never tell anyway, since they would treat you like a little sister and pay your share every time.
“Who do you want to pull the most?”, Hongjoong asked as they all watched you open the first album, a Jongho signed copy.
“San”, you didn’t even hesitate to say.
All of them immediately looked at Seonghwa, who looked like he just got stabbed on the back.
“Have you ever seen his eyes this big?”, Yunho asked as he giggled at Seonghwa expression.
“At least pretend to think for a moment, you’re killing him”, San said as he joined in the laughter.
You looked at him, right by your side. Seonghwa, who casually leaned onto the wall, now fell to his knees, both hands on his heart as he looked at you with those same puppy eyes, then looked down fake crying. “You don’t love me anymore”.
You couldn’t help, but giggle yourself.
“Don’t you want to know why I want a San photocard?”
He looked away, but you noticed how his eyes moved to look at you every 2 to 3 seconds. He was quiet for a moment, still not meeting your eyes.
“Because I already have your set complete and there’s a lot of San’s cards missing for me”.
That was enough for him to stand up. “How do you have mine complete already?”, he frowned.
It was a conflicting feeling, he hates that you spent so much money to support him, but at the same time he was beyond touched by those five words only.
“I want to support you, that’s all you need to know”, you said as you focused back on your gifts. “Now, can you stop pouting and help me here?”
Seonghwa blinked slowly as he gulped, suddenly standing with impeccable posture. Was he pouting this whole time? He noticed too late how the boys got quiet, he knew he was screwed on the group chat later.
Jeong Yunho (정운호)
“Are you sure I’m not going to bother you guys?”, you asked once again to Yunho, who was driving you to their dorms.
He only smiled at you, then quickly looked back to the road, but his hand held yours tighter on top of his thigh, a silent request for you to trust him.
Any other person would be annoyed by now, but he knew the reason for this, it was a fair one. It was a true fact, they always had a schedule for Christmas day and rest was not a given to them, so you didn’t mind spending the day away from him. But not this year, he wanted to do something nice for you now, before lunch, because he would be busy later in the night.
To be honest, even if you were going to bother them, it was too late. You both arrived in front of the building. So you let it go, you trusted his judgment.
You took a moment to actually look closely at Yunho, as he parked the car on their spot. You only witnessed him so serious about something while dancing, he tends to loosing up as soon as he sees you, so it only makes this whole situation more intriguing to you, since he was determined not to tell you a single thing, it was a first for him.
Then, you noticed his ears getting red, but chose to ignore it. How can he still be so shy by your attention after all this time, it was a mystery.
He squeezed your hand to call you back to reality.
“I want you to just enjoy it, can you do that for me?”, you nodded and let go of his hand.
The chaos could be heard from outside the door, but the moment he started to press the door code, everything went silent.
But before you could make a comment, the door opened.
“Happy Birthday!”
“Merry Christmas!”
Half said something, half said something else.
In front of you, half the decoration was for Christmas, the other half was a birthday party. Yunho slipped from your side to grab his own party hat to complete the look of the best boyfriend in the world.
You were giggling at the sight, too many emotions in your heart to actually say something at the moment.
“Come sit and open your gift, Yunho-hyung worked hard to make it happen”, Jongho said.
That he did, he fought hard his own fans to grab those albums for you. To see you beaming while flicking through the photobook was priceless to him, it was all he wanted to see after missing your birthday a couple of days ago.
So you opened it one by one the eight signed copies of their new album, all different versions so you could add them all to your collection.
“Wait, wait”, Mingi said as you took out the last envelope with all the photocards and extra gifts. “Who do you want to pull?”
“Yunho, of course”.
“Boring”, Wooyoung said at the same time Yunho melted inside, a gorgeous smile on his face and the red on his ear.
Every envelope was now in front of you beside their designated albums, already opened. You saved the best for last, excited by the pulls you would get from Yunho’s version.
“You’ll have more lucky on this one”, he said and winked at you when no one was looking.
Your excitement was clear to anyone with at least 50% of eyesight. It was cute and a little gross, but you couldn’t care less about their distaste as you took a deep breath. It was that serious to you.
So you reveal them all at once onto the ground.
4 out of 4 was Hongjoong’s. You couldn’t say you were elated by them, not that you were upset either, but you already got them before, and you did wish to have the least a single of Yunho’s.
The boys couldn’t consider it a successful prank though, because you seemed the most upset in the room. It was kind of offensive if anyone would ask Hongjoong. Yunho was the one supposed to be upset in all of this, but he giggled through and through watching your reactions to their photocards, and now he was laughing!
“Yah, what? What’s wrong with my photocards?”, Hongjoong exclaimed as he pointed to them on your hands, a mixture between laughter and distress clear on his face. “They are cute, aren’t they?”, he went on and on about it as everyone laughed, but the moment you did, he almost killed you with his eyes only.
“Sorry”, you tried to keep a straight face.
Yunho and you shared a quick glance.
Mission failed.

23 charged with domestic terrorism at Atlanta police protestYesterday 22:42 3
Officials in the southern US state of Georgia on Monday announced that 23 protesters, including a Frenchman and a Canadian, had been charged with domestic terrorism after Atlanta police arrested 35 people on Sunday. Police say protesters hurled rocks and Molotov coctails at them as well as torching construction equipment at the site
© Provided by DW - South Africa Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum, who announced the initial arrests a midnight press conference Sunday, said "violent agitators" had launched a coordinated attack on police. What do we know about the incident that led to the charges? The arrests took place after a music event turned violent when black-clad participants stormed the construction site of the Atlanta Public Safety Center in DeKalb county —
derisively referred to as "Cop City" by detractors —
throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails at police and setting several pieces of heavy equipment on fire. Hundreds of people attended Sunday's events.
"The illegal actions of the agitators could have resulted in bodily harm," police said. "Officers exercised restraint and used nonlethal enforcement to conduct arrests." "When you throw commercial-grade fireworks, when you throw Molotov cocktails," Police Chief Schierbaum said, "your only intent is to harm.
This is not a protest.
This is criminal activity." Media outlets reported that black smoke could be seen billowing from the site for miles. Several law enforcement agencies were involved in quelling the unrest. 'Very violent attack,' Atlanta police chief says "This was a very violent attack," Schierbaum said, "This wasn't about a public safety training center:
This was about anarchy." Georgia's Republican governor, Brian Kemp, on Monday said the people involved in Sunday's incident "chose destruction and vandalism over legitimate protest, yet again demonstrating the radical intent behind their actions." "As I've said before, domestic terrorism will not be tolerated in this state," Kemp said.
"We will not rest until those who use violence and intimidation for an extremist end are brought to full justice." What is 'Cop City'? Related video:

The Atlanta City Council approved the $90 million (€84.2 million) Atlanta Public Safety Training Center in 2021, saying the state-of-the-art campus would replace substandard existing facilities and boost police morale. The police and fire training center is being built on 85 acres (344,000 square meters) of a 400-acre property. It is designed to include classrooms and administrative buildings, a shooting range, a driving skills area to practice chases, a "burn building" for firefighters to train on,
and a "mock village" with a home, convenience store and nightclub for law enforcement to conduct tactical exercises. Opponents have two major problems with the project. Those who oppose the militarization of the police say the site will be used to train for "urban warfare." Self-described "defenders of the forest" say construction will involve cutting down so many trees in the Weelaunee Forest southeast of Atlanta —
one of the largest urban forests in the US —
that it would be environmentally damaging for the city's six million residents. How have Georgia lawmakers reacted to protests? Sunday's clashes were the latest in a series of contentious stand-offs between authorities and protesters. On January 18,
a 26-year-old environmental activist was shot and killed during a police raid to clear protesters from the woods.
In the aftermath of the shooting, demonstrations spread to downtown Atlanta.
On January 21,
a police cruiser was set ablaze and windows were shattered when rocks and fireworks were hurled at a downtown skyscraper housing the Atlanta Police Foundation. Such protests have prompted Georgia state lawmakers to look at toughening laws and sentencing, for instance, by proposing that rioting be made a felony rather than a misdemeanor. Those previously arrested during clashes at the site are being charged with felony domestic terrorism, which can carry sentences of up to 35 years. Despite criticism of heavy-handedness, lawmakers are also looking at classifying domestic terrorism as a violent felony.
That would mean an individual's entire sentence would have to be served — even for first-time offenders who would not be eligible for probation — and parole could not be granted until at least 30 years of the sentence had been served. Critics have voiced alarm over what they see as the criminalization of protesters, especially environmental and land-rights defenders attempting to block pipelines and protect woodlands and waterways, by labeling them eco-terrorists. They say the breadth of the 2001 Patriot Act
allows the government to put corporate profits before land stewardship and the public good with lawmakers criminalizing peaceful protest and using militarized police to violently suppress it under penalty of harsh sentencing. Atlanta police brace for further protests Police on Monday said the Georgia Bureau of Investigations would be prosecuting those charged. Beyond two foreign nationals, two of those arrested were Georgia residents.
All others were from various states across the US, including Arizona,
Massachusetts and New York. The vast majority of peaceful protesters were Atlanta residents. More demonstrations are scheduled for the coming days, prompting Atlanta police to release a statement reading,
"With protests planned for the coming days, the Atlanta Police Department, in collaboration with law enforcement partners,
have a multi-layered strategy that includes reaction and arrest." js/ar (AP, Reuters)

Leading actresses Zhao Wei and Zheng Shuang are the latest victims of the Chinese government’s ongoing crackdown on the entertainment industry and the excesses of celebrity fan culture.
On Thursday, all entries related to Zhao on Chinese social media platforms such as Weibo were removed, her name was scrubbed from the credits of films and TV shows, and all content featuring her — including film, TV, chat show appearances and more — was removed from major streaming sites like Tencent Video and iQiyi.
All discussion of Zhao on social media was also censored.
Zhao, who is also known as Vicky or Vicki Zhao and notably starred in My Fair Princess, Shaolin Soccer and Lost in Hong Kong, is a popular star turned billionaire investor and is the face of Italian fashion house Fendi in China.
Chinese state newspaper The Global Times reported that no official reason had been given for the moves to erase Zhao’s presence and work from the Internet, but it did resurface historical allegations of financial impropriety and a number of other scandals*. Most notably, in 2018, the Shanghai Stock Exchange banned Zhao and her husband Huang Youlong from acting as listed company executives for five years due to issues and irregularities related to a failed takeover bid in 2016.
A close friend of Alibaba founder Jack Ma, Zhao and her husband were early investors in Alibaba Pictures Group, buying a $400 million stake in 2015. Once China’s highest-profile billionaire, Ma’s star has dimmed after spectacularly falling out of favor with Beijing**.
The downfall of Zhao comes a few weeks after a professional and business acquaintance of hers, the actor Zhang Zhehan was similarly banned and scrubbed from the Internet after pictures surfaced of him at Japan’s controversial Yasukuni Shrine to war dead.
On Friday, tax authorities in Shanghai fined actress Zheng Shuang $46.1 million for tax evasion.
Zheng, the star of the hit series Meteor Shower and a popular celebrity, was fined for failing to report income between 2019 and 2020 while filming a TV series.
The AFP reported that China’s state broadcasting regulator, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, reiterated it had a “zero tolerance” policy on tax evasion. The regulator pulled the show in question from streaming sites and asked production companies to not work with Zheng in the future.
* “Chinese Nationalists Blast Director Vicki Zhao for Casting Taiwanese Actor“ (July 2016)
Nationalists on Chinese social media have set their sights on actress-turned-director Vicki Zhao after she cast a well-known Taiwanese actor in the lead role of her next film.
The Communist Youth League, long a training ground for elite positions within the Chinese Communist Party, has waged a coordinated social media campaign over the past week criticizing Zhao (also known as Zhao Wei) for casting Leon Dai (Assassin, Double Vision) in the lead of her upcoming romance No Other Love.
In an article entitled “Zhao Wei’s New Film Met with Universal Boycott by Internet Users,” the nationalist organization has alleged that Dai is a supporter of Taiwanese independence and Hong Kong’s pro-democracy Umbrella Movement — political issues of particular consternation among the Chinese Communist Party.
“The state interests come before idol worship. I have liked you for many years, but you should have known better,” wrote one Weibo user, according to the South China Morning Post.
** “Billionaire Jack Ma Disappears From Public View After China’s Crackdown on Alibaba” (January 2021)
Chinese billionaire Jack Ma, famous for his love of the spotlight, hasn’t been seen in public in over two months following Beijing’s aggressive crackdown on his Alibaba business empire.
The celebrated entrepreneur was slated to appear as a star judge on the season finale of Africa’s Business Heroes, a reality TV show created by his own philanthropic organization. But Ma dropped out of the appearance and the show’s broadcast was postponed, the Financial Times was the first to report. Ma’s image and name, previously the program’s biggest selling point, have since been removed from promotional materials related to the finale.
... The celebrated entrepreneur’s retreat from the public eye in China follows an official fall from grace that has been swift and stunning. Formerly known for his cozy government connections and rare outspokenness, Ma has found himself on the receiving end of a sudden reassessment of his celebrated tech conglomerate’s reach and power. The trouble began in early November when Beijing canceled the IPO of Alibaba’s fintech behemoth Ant Financial, which was set to raise $34 billion in the biggest stock-market debut in history. The sudden regulatory halt came after Ma gave a speech criticizing China’s regulators and state-owned banks for their backwardness. His remarks are said to have infuriated Beijing’s party brass, leading Chinese president Xi Jinping to personally order an end to Ant’s offering.
The clouds darkened further for Ma and Alibaba in late December when Chinese regulators issued a bluntly worded set of statements indicating they would be launching an antitrust investigation into Alibaba’s flagship e-commerce business, as well as enforcing new rules constraining Ant’s business activities. Government investigators were reported to have entered Alibaba’s headquarters in Hangzhou shortly after.
Just FYI, Alibaba owns Youku, which is the platform that produced WoH.
Stuff is just starting to trickle out, but it sounds like there’s also a big anti-LGBTQ crackdown coming down the pike as part of government efforts to “clean up” C-ent and its effects on The Youth.
Competitors might have taken advantage of a perfect storm of events to push our guy in front of an oncoming train, but what happened to him was just the shot across the bow, and the butcher’s bill is going to be coming due. It was never really about the shrine. It was a convenient excuse to start a purge.

Mr. Navneet Munot - CIO of SBI Mutual Fund, agreed with Mr. Prashant Jain and said: “Investors will benefit from remaining invested in equity market in the medium to long term and should avoid selling it low and buying at high. He added, “A reform friendly government with significant political capital, a stable macro-economic environment and structural drivers like favorable demographics, demand and digitalisation will take India to a $5 trillion economy. A world dealing with excessive liquidity and anemic growth will find India as an 'Oasis of Hope'.”
The second panel discussion on “The Outlook” for Indian economy was moderated by Mr. Arijit Basu, Managing Director of State Bank of India, and the panelists included Mr. Saumya Kanti Ghosh, Gr. Chief Economic Advisor for SBI, Kewal Handa, Charman of Union Bank of India, Mr. Rajneesh Jain, CFO, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., and Shri. Pankaj Jain, Director at Duff & Phelps.
Mr. Saumya Kanti Ghosh provided statistical numbers to prove that India could easily reach the target of USD 5 trillion by 2024. He said: “The decision to rationalise corporate taxes will result in significant corporate savings and could act as an enabler in an investment led recovery in medium term. We must remember that $5 trillion is just a number and policies must be tailored towards that objective.”
From JITO Mumbai Zone, Chairman, Shri. Hitesh Doshi and from JPF –Director In Charge, Shri. Ravi Jain welcomed the guests and Vice Chairman – JPF Shri. Ajay Bohara gave the details of activities being carried out by JPF. Shri. Vicky Oswal, Chief Secretary-Mumbai ZONE, delivered the vote of thanks.

The House is Somewhat Unfriendly to its Occupants
Chapter 1 – Sale No Longer Pending
My wife and I sold our San Francisco home. Hallelujah! Huzzah! Thank God. Much as we loved Kooktown, USA, it was time to move on.
A sense of NO REGRETS came over me, as I reflected on a 30 year life in the State Formerly Known as Golden.
The house, a 3400 square foot split level neo-deco beauty designed by Frank Lloyd Wright protégé Aram Torrossian, sits in the made-up neighborhood of Clarendon Heights. The exact address is 310 Twin Peaks Blvd.
And perhaps the location’s monikered connection to a certain TV show created by David Lynch should have alerted us to the next 24 years. A run of comic, tragic, and coincidental events that had me wiping the sweat off my brow all the way, and up through the official closing date of . . .
. . . Friday the 13th. With an added bonus of A FULL MOON.
****
Don’t misunderstand. The house was not a construction disaster replete with Escher-like structure and sitting on an Indian (Cherokee Not Hindi) burial ground. Not at all. The property inspector who examined it before we bought raved about its structural integrity. In particular, the use of concrete and rebar to fortify floors and to support walls. He also fell in love with the countersunk bolts that secured the foundation and resisted earthquakes.
Prior to finishing, he pointed to a component of the build that included a support beam running the length of the storage facility just off the garage.
“Balances out the stressors on the top three floors,” he said.
“Uh, okay,” came the brilliant reply.
310 Twin Peaks was a design and engineering dream. I’ve included a photo at the conclusion of this introduction. Most important, it solved a dilemma Lee and I had regarding renting office space.
Our previous house, a cozy Marina-style home in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco, had three bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, living room, and one bathroom all on one floor. Perfect for the two of us and an occasional guest.
Not so great for running my business, I was an independent film and video producer at the time, out of one of the bedrooms. Subcontractors coming and going; equipment in the garage; and a client meeting or three during the six years we lived there. I parked a coordinator at a spare desk once in a while as well. Not good for privacy.
In 1993, Lee suggested I rent an office somewhere in the city, which I did not want to do. If I had to go away from the house to work, I’d never see my wife, an unacceptable situation.
And this meant the hunt for a new house commenced and the very first of a series of disconcerting events sat just ahead of the stern of the good ship, George.
Bear in a mind a few facts as this unfolds.
1.  We started looking for a new house in 1993. We didn’t buy, or take possession, until late 1995.
2.  I was working on Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” when the search began. It turned out to be a fitting starting point.
3.  Lee and I are HUGE fans of Halloween. It might be our favorite Holiday.
310 Twin Peaks Blvd. Seems harmless despite the odd connection to the odd David Lynch show of the era. Yes? No?
Chapter 2 – The Nightmare Before Escrow
In the Autumn of 1992 the Mouse (Disney) hired me to work on Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” To that point, the biggest job of my production career. It also served as the house-buying inception point because Lee and I took the opportunity of Yours truly having a somewhat normal schedule (Monday-Friday, few weekends) to be squired around by Joan Foppiano and Vickie Tucker, the World’s Greatest Real Estate Agents.
And that’s not a false claim. They got us into our house on 28th Street in Noe Valley, no small feat considering we looked at 48 properties before deciding on this particular one, and yes I kept track. They would get us out during a down market two years later, and in Guiness World Record time, subjective as that sounds.
All of this would get us into . . .
310 Twin Peaks Blvd.
But first, Tim Burton.
Or, should I say, Halloween.
For those readers who don’t know “The Nightmare Before Christmas” or “TNBC” as insiders called the film, it was a creepy stop-motion feature that involved a skeleton in a tuxedo named Jack Skellington, who decided to hijack Christmas.
Yes, I’ve heard all the Grinch comparisons. Leave me alone.
I am looking at this in hindsight. I worked on a movie that made a lot of people uncomfortable and entertained at the same time. And that is exactly how the coinciding search for a new house felt when we discovered 310 Twin Peaks Blvd. in the Spring of 1993.
To that point, with the patient Joan and Vickie, we had looked at about a dozen properties and none of them seemed right. Too small. No truly separate room to run the business.
If a house had an in-law unit, very popular in the Bay Area . . . must be a lot of in-laws looking to be banished to the backyard . . . , it either needed $100,000 in work, had never been permitted, or did not afford more privacy than Lee and I had in the Noe Valley residence.
One weekend in mid-April of 1993, we were schlepping, actually being schlepped by Vickie, on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. We pulled up in front of what appeared to be an overgrown weed and vine infested lot. We exited the car.
“I really like what they’ve done with the place,” I offered.
Vickie laughed her “If I Only I Could Beat My Clients With An Ax Handle I Would” laugh, and dragged us up four flights of moss covered brick stairs. She gave us the tour, which included the following highlights, sure to close any quick sale.
1.  The kitchen, admittedly a good-sized one, still had the original cabinets, floors, walls, AND (BONUS!) oven from 1939. However, the faucet was a Moen.
2.  Water damage covered the entire north wall of the kitchen, a result of an ongoing second floor patio leak.
3.  The washer and dryer were definitely from 1972, but the Maytag repairman had left his business card taped to one of the lids, so we had that going for us.
4.  All the upstairs bedrooms (three) had bits and pieces of broken glass on the floor.
5.  The downstairs powder room contained the ORIGINAL FIXTURES, which the seller consider a plus as that little fact was called out in the abstract. Abstract is real estate speak for flyer.
6.  The garage, at 400 square foot had been designed to accommodate a single car, because it was constructed in the late 30’s when most families were lucky to own one. However, no adjustments had been made over the years and the garage had only enough room for a 1939 Hudson.
“We’ll take it!” I exclaimed. “Okay, maybe not.”
“I hear the Mini is a nice little car,” said Vickie.
After that comment landed with a thud, we moved onto the separate room, which would serve as my office. It’s location? The bottom floor of the house, just off the aforementioned garage.
****
Four hundred square feet. One wall entirely of mirrors. Wall-to-Wall carpeting that had seen better days, but just needed a cleaning. A storage closet next to it completed the floor.
And the high points. You could get to it without entering the front door of the house. AND no other common areas or rooms existed on the same floor with it.
“Again, where do I sign?” I asked, hoping the earnest tone of my voice would convince Vickie of my intentions.
“There are a few things to consider, first,” she said, and won Understatement of the Year from Dr. Paul Ehrlich, PhD in Hyperbolics.
“Oh?”
“Yes, let’s start with the previous owner’s suicide . . . on the property.”

5 Podcasts You Need to Start Listening To
Tumblr media
Hello Everyone!
This week I wanted to write about something on the easier side because I have a lot of things planned for the blog that I want to get done. I’m really excited about the changes to come! But for now, I wanted to mention a few podcasts that have helped me a lot recently.
We’re allowed to have headphones at my day job, so I tend to either listen to music or an audiobook. Lately, however, I’ve been binge-listening to podcasts. My friends know that for the longest time I have had a hard time finding a podcast I enjoyed or where I could stand to listen to a person’s voice for more than one episode (listening to the same voice for eight hours can get exhausting).
I’ve been listening mostly to things that help me get my life together but also say that it’s okay to not have my life together. Also on the list is a podcast for writers and a humorous podcast, both of which have helped me too. These are in no particular order, I enjoy all of them equally and think everyone can get at least something from them all. On that note, let’s just get into it!
Tumblr media
Unf#ck Your Brain
Unf#ck Your Brain is a feminist podcast hosted by Kara Loewentheil. Her earlier podcast episodes were aimed towards lawyers, but she later changes her message to feminism and learning to control your brain to become better in your everyday life. Kara is a Master Life Coach and has degrees from both Yale and Harvard.
This podcast has helped me in multiple areas in my life because she discusses how to control thought process. Multiple times throughout the podcast she says that you cannot stop a thought from developing but you can stop from acting on it. Some of my favorite episodes include Complaining, Parenting, Self Care, and Social Anxiety. By listening to this podcast I’ve been able to manage my time better, improve my negative thoughts, and have a better understanding that every person’s brain interrupts things differently, that there is no right or wrong way in how your brain interrupts things, and that it is possible to improve your thoughts in order to improve your productivity and your life in general.
Tumblr media
Directionally Challenged
This podcast is hosted by Candice King and Kayla Ewell. I’ve been in love with these two since their time on The Vampire Diaries. For those of you who don’t know them by their actual names, they play Caroline Forbes and Vicky Donovan on the show. The podcast is aimed at 30-something year old’s but they have so much advice that applies to women of all ages. The message of the show is to say they thought they would have their lives figured out by 30 but now that they’re in their 30’s they know they don’t.
I enjoy this podcast because I was led to believe the misconception that I would have my life together in my 20’s. And I definitely don’t. Knowing that some people don’t have their life figured out even in their 30’s really helps me when I tell myself that it’s okay to not have everything figured out. I also love the guests they have on the show as well, including some other TVD cast members. Some of my favorite episodes include “Anxiety and Productivity” with Bri Emery, “A Sucky Love Story” with Brittani Louise Taylor, “!0 Year Challenge” with Michael Trevino, “What Would Dobrev Do?” with Nina Dobrev, “After” with Anna Todd, and “Basic Witches” with Leah Knauer and Rachel Laforest.
Tumblr media
Kalyn’s Coffee Talk
This podcast is hosted by Kalyn Nicholson. Many people may know her from her YouTube channel. Kalyn’s Coffee Talk focuses on living your best life, mental health, and wellness. I honestly started listening to this podcast simply because of the word coffee in the title. I was randomly looking up podcasts involving coffee.
What I found was a podcast that helps motivate me every Monday morning. I also started binge watching her YouTube videos on the weekends when I didn’t work and was completely inspired by Kalyn to get my stuff done. It might have also been the other podcasts I listen to as well but I love the sense of motivation she gives off in her podcast. I listen to each new episode on my way to work on Monday mornings. It gives me a good sense of starting off the week and since I leave for work at four in the morning that’s something that I look forward to to start my week off right. Some of my favorite episodes include “Witches Brew”, “Let Go Of What No Longer Serves You”, “Detoxing My Social Media”, “Why Morning Routines Work”, and “How To Enjoy Alone Time”.
Tumblr media
I Should Be Writing
This is the podcast I mentioned that was for writers. The show is hosted by award-winning author Mur Lafferty. This podcast typically has interviews with other authors but focuses on discussing the issues that arise during the writing process or writing career if you write as a profession.
This podcast has helped me overcome many issues I’ve stumbled upon during my writing and I’m not even done listening to all the episodes yet. This podcast has been going since 2005 and has over 400 posts. Even if I do binge listen to it at work that’s still a lot of episodes to get through. Because it has helped me get through curveballs it’s definitely a high recommend from me for other writers. Since there are so many episodes and I haven’t finished listening to them all, I’m not listing my favorite episodes. My personal suggestion is if you want to listen to this podcast, start from the beginning or look at the titles to see what authors are guests on her show.
Tumblr media
This Might Get Weird
Okay, here it is, the humorous podcast hosted by Mamrie Hart and Grace Helbig. This podcast is one hell of a ride. I have to admit I was skeptical about starting this one and I didn’t think I was going to like it. But I had already downloaded all the episodes and I was already in the parking lot at my work. So I decided if I didn’t like it by the time my first break came around then I would just switch to music. I’m glad I gave it a chance because I absolutely love it!
This podcast simply follows the interesting things that happen to both Mamrie and Grace in their lives. They write down things on their phones and share them over the podcast together. I can't get enough of them. My coworkers were staring at me like I was insane for over a week because I would be listening to this podcast and would randomly start laughing so hard because of things they said. That’s not an exaggeration, I had to stop what I was doing one time because I was laughing so hard that I kept dropping my components. If you enjoy a good laugh I highly recommend this podcast. Some of my favorite episodes include “Grace Takes the Wrong Pill”, “Mamrie’s Secret College Hookup”, “Mamrie Channels Her Inner Banksy”, “Grace Hits Herself With Bear Spray”, “Mamrie Shows Grace How to Catfish a Cow”, and “Grace’s Stands Off With An Alpaca”. These episode titles alone should make you laugh without having heard anything else.
There are many other podcasts I listen to as well but these five specific podcasts have helped me in the last few months. Unf#ck Your Brain, Directionally Challenged, and Kalyn’s Coffee Talk have all helped me to get my life together with inspiration, motivation, and personal challenges. I Should Be Writing has helped me improve my writing by talking with other authors and the challenges that occur while writing and how they overcome them. This Might Get Weird has helped me laugh. I’m sure that sounds weird but there are times when I need a break from focusing on work, finances, and even a break from my kids (who I adore) but having a good laugh at some unbelievable events has helped to relieve stress and give my mind a break from all the chaos going on around me.
Two other notable mentions I would like to include are the podcasts Basic Witches hosted by Leah Knauer and Rachel Laforest, and Mile Higher Podcast hosted by Josh Thomas and Kendall Rae. These podcasts are more on the preference side so if you don’t like tarot readings or anything related to witchcraft, Basic Witches would not be for you. And if you don’t like true crime or conspiracy theories, I wouldn’t recommend Mile Higher Podcast. However, if you like to expand your tastes, both podcasts are enjoyable and I learn a lot from them both.
If you liked this week's post please hit the like button, follow the blog, drop a comment, and share this with your friends. I have some new things coming to the blog next week and if you want a sneak peek follow me on my social media all of which are linked on the bottom of this post and to the right side of the page! Enjoy your Friday and have a great weekend!
- Chelsea <3

Monthly Web Development Update 4/2019: Design Ethics And Clarity Over Style
Monthly Web Development Update 4/2019: Design Ethics And Clarity Over Style
Anselm Hannemann
2019-04-12T14:44:48+02:002019-04-12T13:14:53+00:00
“‘Ethics’ and Ethics” is more than a typical article. It’s a detailed essay exploring what the term ‘ethics’ really means, how its meaning changed in recent times, and how diffusion of responsibility makes it hard to address and fix problems in big organizations.
Implementing design ethics, tech ethics, or business ethics as individual responsibilities might seem like a quick and easy solution, however, it’s not a very effective one as they all lack context when they don’t have support from other people who provide the foundation for their work. Only if a company’s business analysts, bookkeepers, investors, PR, marketing and sales people, as well as the CEO themself all contribute to building an ethical product, it will become successful. And because such an undertaking requires so many people to be on board, it’s rarely seen out in the wild.
How much effort and good will it takes to build a company that follows an ethical approach, is illustrated in the book It doesn’t have to be crazy at work by Basecamp’s Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson. It helps us understand why it’s so much easier to build a non-ethical company and why even if a couple of people in a team strive for better ethics, the product or company won’t reflect this individual path yet. To help us do better, Oliver Reichenstein, the author of the article which I mentioned in the beginning, also shares a very interesting approach: designers might want to start to consider philosophy to encourage ethical thinking and advocate for values and ethics in their everyday work.
News
We heard the announcement some months ago, and now the first builds are out: Microsoft’s new Chromium-based Edge browser is here. So what does that mean for front-end developers?
Safari 12.1 is included in macOS Mojave 10.14.4 and iOS 12.2 and with it, all users get Dark Mode for the Web, Intelligent Tracking Prevention 2.1, Payment Request API improvements, WebRTC improvements, Intersection Observer support, Web Share API, color input, and <datalist> support.
Firefox 66 has been released. From now on, autoplaying sounds will be blocked by default, and the Touch Bar on macOS is supported, too.
General
Humane by Design is an essential resource about focusing your design decisions on user well-being. It provides ideas and helpful resources about transparency, empowering people, fostering inclusiveness, showing respect, and making thoughtful decisions. A valuable website for any project or product you are in charge of or work on.
What does it look like when you try to use a browser just ten years old today? The browser’s start page returns a 404 error, Google works but returns a no-script version — not deliberately but because JavaScript errors out —, YouTube doesn’t work without even showing an error, and creating accounts at any of the big services isn’t a pleasant experience at all. This article is not only enlightening but also reveals a lot of details we can take care of to make our web projects more sustainable and available for more people, regardless of which browser they use.
UI/UX
“Good design is about clarity over style.” Matthias Ott explores this statement and why many designers still like to ignore this advice and create shiny but cluttered or unclear interfaces.
Taras Bakusevych shows examples of how we can simplify our designs and what simplicity means after all.
Public Sans is an open-source sans-serif font, licensed under SIL Open Font and made by the people of U.S. Web Design System.
Patents are everywhere, but we often forget that design patterns can also be patented. Christie Tang collected some of the most prominent patterns that we cannot use because global players like Apple, Facebook, or Samsung hold patents on them.
Tumblr media
When designing a product, there are quite some pitfalls that can make a simple task overly complicated. Taras Bakusevych summarized what you need to watch out for. (Image credit)
Web Performance
Chrome 73 now supports imagesrcset and imagesizes attributes on link rel=preload elements.
Tooling
Spectral is a flexible open-source JSON linter with out-of-the-box support for the OpenAPI specification and, as such, promotes consistency in API designs.
Privacy
This article explains why all your Alexa traffic is analyzed and probably listened to by someone who works on the product software to help the voice-activated assistant respond to commands.
JavaScript
Jeremy Mikkola wrote a great list of rules for autocomplete.
Jeremy Wagner explores responsible JavaScript, how frameworks often force us into unsustainable patterns, and the difference between web apps and websites.
Tumblr media
JavaScript can be a performance liability and, thus, we need to use it responsibly. Jeremy Wagner shares tips for doing so. (Image credit)
Work & Life
Vicky Carmichael shares how to improve the tech event experience for marginalized people and how to move from the traditional “underrepresented group thinking” towards a more inclusive approach. A lot of the tips that make events more inclusive can be applied to a company as well.
Charlotte Cowles on how freelancing fuels anxiety about money, the stress you feel when you value time like money, and, finally, some tricks to escape the trap.
Going Beyond…
It’s impossible to reach everyone, even for giants like Google or Facebook. Seth Godin on why reaching almost no one is fine if you ask yourself which no one. Your smallest viable audience holds you to account. It forces a focus and gives you nowhere to hide.
Google Maps is one of the products most of us use daily. And yet it’s the one product by Google that doesn’t make money — yet. As it seems, its makers are now trying to include ads into Maps to bring more profits to Alphabet.
George Monbiot wrote an article on “how the media let malicious idiots take over”. To make it clearer, let me quote the following paragraph:
“If our politics is becoming less rational, crueller and more divisive, this rule of public life is partly to blame: the more disgracefully you behave, the bigger the platform the media will give you. If you are caught lying, cheating, boasting or behaving like an idiot, you’ll be flooded with invitations to appear on current affairs programmes. If you play straight, don’t expect the phone to ring.”
Mallen Baker explains why the environment is too important to leave to environmentalists and what we can do to make our lives worth living and create a surrounding that works for humans.
It’s hard to believe in theory, but in practice, it’s very easy to make unethical choices, deliberately. This article asks what drives people to make unethical choices. Sticking to your own ethical beliefs is hard when society is embracing something different — at least that’s what we tend to see from the filtered media and social media bubble. However, if we talk to people directly, I think it’s different. Many people share the same ethical beliefs and would condemn unethical behavior if it would be transparent and public. The private/unseen is what makes it easier for people to go beyond their values, supercharged by the allurement of money or getting a higher status and reputation in society.

It was supposed to be the perfect date, it was all Mingi could think about.
It was on November 3rd at 9 p.m. when Mingi got lost in the middle of the conversation. His focus was on the window. This small get-together on his place was his idea, and he never regretted a moment with all of his friends before.
His plans went out of the window, literally.
“Hey, Mingi-ah!”, Wooyoung shook his shoulder. His confused face was enough for everyone to laugh and let it go as a normal Mingi moment.
But you noticed how his smile didn’t reach his eyes and how even his posture changed all of a sudden.
You two were side by side, but barely touching each other, the only sign of something more between you two was the way his body unconsciously leaned into you, like he was doing it at that moment.
“Are you good, love?”, you whispered to him when the attention was away from him. The boys moved to a much more interesting topic, all the ways Mingi’s been acting weird lately, something both of you ignored.
He nodded, because he was. Truly, he was. If he were to say something, maybe his voice would’ve sound too squeaky and defensive. But he couldn’t hide his disappointment as he noticed the thick snow falling quicker and quicker as time went by.
“It’s snowing!”, San said as he pointed to the window. Now all the attention moved on to that. They all got up to look outside, even though it was a common sight for winter on Korea and they got bored by it fast.
The only special thing about it was the wish couples make and the time they spend together during the first snow of the year, but the 7 of them were painfully single and that thought didn’t even cross their minds.
“Should we have a snow fight?”, Yeosang asked with that excited expression on his face that made everything automatically agree with whatever he wanted.
“That would be so fun, but is there snow enough for it?”, you asked as you glanced back at Mingi. That was right up his alley, actually, it was such a Mingi idea you were surprised he himself didn’t say it first.
You noticed how he played with both his hands for a moment, thinking, probably overthinking whatever there was on his mind.
You took his hands on yours in the most discreet manner you could afford. It was enough for him to get back to the present, right here and right now.
“Do you want to go?”, you whispered.
At this point, half of them were already up getting ready to leave, and the other half were looking for some old boxes, so they could use it to slide down the hills of snow outside.
Turns out, it was snowing for hours now, and they did not notice, which wasn’t surprising. With this group, anything could be entertaining for hours on end.
Mingi noticed all your delicate gestures towards him. You were always like that, attentive and caring, and he was so beyond grateful for that, even though he never really said it out loud. The first snow would be a perfect day to say those things to you.
But he also noticed how excited you actually seemed, he knew it would be a first for you to have a snow fight like this. It wasn’t the date he planned, but it would be a nice moment nonetheless.
So he agreed.
You two could only hear Wooyoung’s laughter and screams coming from all sides, but somehow if felt like there was only you two there.
It was a strategic attack, you even teamed up with Jongho for that, and it worked. You got Mingi screaming and running around trying to take the snow out of the back of his puffer jacket.
It was all fun and games until he came at you for payback. “Whyy meeee? He-he’s literally right there”, you ran for your life trying to get Mingi off your back, while Jongho was sat by the curb watching the whole thing.
You never tried running on a 5-inch snow before, you had no idea how tiring all the effort was and how scared of falling you could get.
The moment you felt one hand on your arm, you gave up and accepted your fate. He caught you. His hands trailed down until he found yours.
You expected vengeance, bloodlust and the ultimate evil, but you got a blinding smile instead. To say you did not know how to react was an understatement.
“I’m sorry, love, forgive me?”, you gave your best attempt at the puppy eyes.
“Oh no, honey, I’m afraid that’s not possible”, he held both your hands with only one of his as he made a giant ball of snow.
Yeah, you were doomed.
A few hours later, the three characters on the Christmas movie were having a snow fight, which made him giggle and gave you chills down your spine.
“You’re evil, Song Mingi”, you said as you brought your legs closer to your body under the cozy blanket.
He giggled even more at that. His hands held yours tight, and you leaned into his chest, the closer, the better.
Everyone went already home. It was getting late and colder by the hour, but you and Mingi refused to go to bed until the tradition was complete. At least 3 Christmas movies were required for you both to watch on the first snow day, whatever day was, if both of you were busy or if somehow you were away from each other, there was a way to make it work.
It wasn’t the perfect date he planned, and he didn’t get to say all of those pretty words to you, but he made a promise to himself along with the one he made with you.
He wouldn’t wait for a perfect day to say his feelings anymore, from now on, whenever he felt like it, he would speak his mind.
“I hope it’s true…”, he whispered, and you were unsure if he was talking to you.
“What?”, you looked up at him, but he refused to meet your eyes.
“That the couples who make a wish on the first snow have it come true, because I want us to stay together forever”, he said it and you could see the redness slowly reaching his cheeks.
“I don’t know about the wish, but I’ll gladly make it work for the rest of my days, what about that?”
Your first snow together, your first snow fight together, and also your first love confession for one another. So what if it wasn’t the date he planned? He couldn’t wish for anything better.

For them to succeed in Salman’s complete, he should do 13 100 crore movies. After them comes King Khan, who has 950 factors in his kitty. He has to do a minimum of fourteen 100 crore movies to succeed in Salman’s place. Final however not least, Ranveer Singh, the next-gen actor, who stands at a complete of 850 factors and he might want to do a minimum of fifteen 100 crore movies to match Salman’s degree. But the last time Australia played host to the Games in 2006, Saina was a 16-year-old unknown quantity who was ousted in the Round of 16 and Sindhu was yet to make her senior debut. Sushil was yet to become the household name that he is now but wrestling as a whole was dropped from the Games.
Australia hosted the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane in 2006. The hosts took up the top spot with 84 gold medals and a total haul of 222. England followed with 36 golds and 110 medals and Canada were third with 26 golds and 86 medals. India finished fourth with 22 golds and a total medal tally of 50. The House is Somewhat Unfriendly to Occupants
For those readers who don’t know “The Nightmare Before Christmas” or “TNBC” as insiders called the film, it was a creepy stop-motion feature that involved a skeleton in a tuxedo who decided to hijack Christmas.

Vicki: Student Media Festivals!
Today we’re talking with my friend Mike Lawrence about student media festivals and how you can run one.
He has been running the nation’s oldest student media festival for the last 9 years.
Our friend Hall Davidson ran it for 25 years before that.
It’s at mediafestival.org
Now I do have to give a shoutout. That he (Mike) today just started, as we’re taping this, as Senior Director of Educator Engagement for PowerSchool, which is a sponsor of a lot of the work that I do. So I do need to disclose that.
But we are so excited, Mike, to talk about student media festivals.
Would you describe — for those who have never heard of the idea of a student media festival — what it looks like, and what are you trying to accomplish?
Mike: Thanks, first of all, for inviting me on. I’m really pleased to be here on this exciting day for me personally. I’m thrilled to talk about student media festivals.
What is a student media festival?
So to answer your question, it’s kind of like the Oscars that we just had recently on TV, but for kids.
So these are students who are working using media — whether it be video or imagery, or we even have a 3D printer category this year — to express their creativity and to demonstrate knowledge of a subject area.
So we aren’t so much looking to find the next Spielberg (although that would be kind of cool) but we’re trying to find kids that are able to use media to demonstrate a concept they’re learning in class.
So to support that, we have categories that are aligned up with each core subject.
So you’ve got everything from English/Language Arts category or you’ve got a Math category, a Science category, and so on.
And there we have two divisions, Elementary and Secondary.
There are subject divisions and grade level divisions
So what I love about the festival is that kids actually get celebrated for their creativity while they’re learning. And they get to come down, and we have a microphone for them.
I get to be the Vanna White, and I hand them the plaque.
And then they accept the award. We have them speak.
It’s a great practice for them to thank their parents, and thank their teachers, and we always encourage them to thank the sponsors. It’s never a bad idea if you get stuck.
And Hall Davidson is the emcee. Even though he was the director for 25 years, he still can’t shake us, and he’s fabulous in that role.
It’s just a great day. It’s a Saturday. This year it will be June 2nd at our Harmony Gold Preview House on Sunset Boulevard.
We tell people, “It’s in Hollywood! It’s coming to accept awards, and it’s the Oscars for kids.”
It’s the Oscars for kids
That’s sort of the way we describe it.
So that’s kind of what it looks like, and we’re really thrilled to keep doing it.
Vicki: Now this is in California. What’s the deadline? And how long are these videos?
This is only open to students in California
Mike: Great question. Thank you.
So the deadline is April 2nd. From January through April is the submission period.
Anyone in the K-12 public, private, independent space that resides and goes to school in California are eligible.
We don’t have a limit on the length of video projects.
We’ve even had full-length feature films submitted. If you can believe that.
Vicki: Wow.
Mike: We had middle school students, who every year would submit a feature-length film.
It’s just fantastic! So you can do that, or you can do just this quick snippet….
We have a lot of students who submit PSAs (public service announcements) because that’s a popular assignment in class.
We have folks that do sort of mock movie trailers, people that do music videos, people that do — as I shared earlier — other media can be submitted in the categories as well.
So they’ll do a series of photos. Like a photo essay. That can be submitted as well.
So we don’t have a length limit which I know our judges aren’t thrilled about. Some of those longer projects do take time to judge.
But that’s the time frame. So we open it up usually Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January is when we start accepting submissions, and then this year April 2nd is the deadline.
Then that gives our judges the time — from the end of April to judge. Then we use May to announce the winners of each category so that they know to come to the festival to accept the award.
But we hold back on the grand prize winners, and we announce those at the actual festival.
Vicki: WOW. How many submissions do you get, Mike?
How many entries does your festival get each year?
Mike: We have about 6,000 students involved in the projects that are submitted.
The number of submissions is somewhere in the hundreds. Like 400 or 500. It varies each year.
It makes the job pretty difficult for our judges.
But we slice it up by the subject areas.
And we get teachers that are experts in that subject or have taught that subject for years, to be the judges. So either individuals can judge, or teams together and you know, pop some popcorn, and score them up together. It’s up to them.
And it’s all volunteer driven. These are all folks that just out of the goodness of their heart have agreed to step in and judge.
We actually argue that it’s a professional development opportunity because you get to see what good and bad media projects look like — very quickly.
We have a rubric on the web, and we ask the people to use the rubric as they’re building their movies and certainly the judges use that thoroughly as they’re actually scoring it. So it ends up being a bit of a training exercise where those judges and helps them improve their own use of media in the classroom.
And so that’s the time frame.
But what if we’re not in California?
Vicki: OK, so Mike. Say somebody’s in another state or organization, and they want to do a festival like yours. How can they get started?
Mike: It’s true. Not everybody can move to California, even if they want to.
So what we have on the website, is a “Steal this Festival” page.
How to “Steal the Festival” and get all of their information
And we’ve broken down, “Here’s how we do it. Here’s the rubric. Here’s the template. Here’s the form we use.”
And we have that right there on the website.
We encourage people to take the idea and run with it. And build their own regional festival. And tweak it! You don’t have to do a carbon copy of what we do. And build a regional festival for your state, or your part of the state, or your country.
We encourage educators across the globe to do that.
We’re really thrilled to see those ideas pop up, and new festivals pop up… And we celebrate that every time we see that.
So that’s what they could do if they wanted to start their own festival.
And then certainly drop us a line, and let us know, “Hey this is what we’re doing in Georgia,” or “This is what we’re doing (wherever)..”
That would be fantastic. We can tweet them out and encourage people in that region to apply as well.
Vicki: Mike, is there a mistake that people make when they kick off a media festival? (One that) really costs a lot of time and energy that could be prevented?
Mike: Wow. Great question!
Is there a common mistake that beginners make?
You know, I think what often happens is you try to do too much.
We’ve grown over the 52 years of the festival — adding categories, tweaking, and adjusting things. I would say start small. I think the common mistake is that, “We have to have all the categories that they do in California,” or that they have at the Oscars.
I would start small, and just go with a few awards, and see what organically develops. If you get too prescriptive, you may find that it’s difficult for teachers to sort of fit in that box.
What we do at the festival is we have a little bit of a “loose” category for special award winners. And we just look at what’s submitted each year.
If there’s something that’s outstanding in student achievement, but it doesn’t quite fit in a category? We’ll create a special category and give them an award for it because it really deserves to be recognized. We don’t want to let it go by, and not have a moment to applaud that work.
So, I would suggest that you start small, be flexible, and then be open to what you get. See what comes in.
I’ll give one example. We had this fantastic submission come in that was using Minecraft to tell the story about how zombies attacked this one student’s school. They actually went inside of Minecraft and captured a screen of the game.
And then they layered on top of that their voices. As essentially actors, performing, using the characters in Minecraft as their puppets. Kind of like a digital puppet show.
And that’s actually a type of video called Machinima where you use machines to build cinema. It’s a portmanteau of those two words.
And so, we didn’t have anything to celebrate that. It’s animation, but it’s a unique kind of animation.
So we created the new Machinima category, and we gave that project the first ever Best Machinima award. It was a good example of being flexible, and watching what’s coming in, and adjusting… which I love to encourage.
Vicki: Well, Mike, if someone is pitching it for their state or their organization, and they have a really short time to pitch this, to those who can fund or support this type of thing, what would you say in your 30-second pitch for the advantages of hosting a student media festival?
What’s the elevator speech to sell this project?
Mike: Well. It celebrates student creativity, encourages educators to use media and get away from lectures. And really build that project-based learning that we know activates the brain, teaches students to be collaborative, and results in just a fantastic learning experience for the students.
There’s my elevator pitch for it.
Vicki: OK. So teachers, think about hosting a student media festival.
And remember, you can go to mediafestival.org and Steal this Festival and they’re letting you do that with all of their ideas.
And California educators, remember that your deadline is April 2nd for this year in 2018.
Mike: Yes. And it’s free! It’s free to enter! And it’s free to attend!
Vicki: Ohhhh. I love that!
Of course, it takes the time of a whole lot of you guys, but it’s such a great project.
Thanks for doing it!
Mike: Well, thanks for letting me share!
It’s a fantastic opportunity, and I appreciate the chance to talk about it.
