As the golden sun began to set over the horizon and illuminate his skin, Baelfire began to glow in a warmth unlike any he had shown before. His small hands wrapped around the wheel at ten and two as he looked onward at the sea. “Mama! Mama, look!” He called down to her, careful not to let his eyes break from their course. “I-I’m sailing, Mama!” He wasn’t tall enough to see much beyond the wheel, but he did his best. One day, he might be able to without having to stand on the tips of his toes. “I don’t know where we are going. Father told me to look straight on and that would be the direction.”

"I love you, son."
Chocolate eyes STARED beyond sweat-soaked bangs. His chest rose and fell as he replayed the words the other had said in his head over and OVER again. He could not have heard those words.. .There was no way. Killian meant those words.. They weren’t meant for him…
..They were meant that for his MOTHER…
He did not believe those words to be true. How could they be? He had told him many moons ago that he made a promise to HIM that he would never leave him, just like he had his Mother. He PROMISED that he would be by his side like a true father should and not abandon him…
…He PROMISED that he would be better than his Papa.
Did Baelfire ever expect the pirate to say that he LOVED him? Absolutely not. Did he expect him to say it again? … Even lower of a chance. His own father had not abandoned him, no. His own father treated him like a caged bird once his mother had left them behind all that time ago…
…Before they had come back for him.
…Would Killian make the same mistakes…?
He couldn’t speak, all this pain and DEVASTATION brought on from his past tortured him from the inside out.
The fourteen year old was STUNNED silent as he looked at the man he now called, ‘Father’. Fingers CURLED into a loose fist by his sides, uncertainty playing VIOLENTLY with his heart. What if this was ALL just a ploy? What if this was all just part of some scheme to make him feel something for one of the only steady adults in his life..? His Mother did not always have the best choice in men, but if she had picked a GOOD one Killian was it– so Baelfire PRAYED every night.
Could he do it? Could he say he loved ANOTHER father figure only for him to LEAVE in the future just like everyone else had? … Even his own MOTHER had left him once upon a time…
…He could do it TOO.
Regardless of all the things his head was telling him, despite all the red flags that were SAILING in the sky, Baelfire had to trust him– he had to BELIEVE that this man, this [ [ p i r a t e ] ] was not going to leave him, abandon him like every other adult had. He had to believe that when he said he loved him, he meant it.
His heart ached, his head SCREAMED, but as his chest rose and fell rapidly in distress, lips his mother had given him trembling, Baelfire uttered the four words he NEVER thought he would ever utter again to anyone but his Mother,
“I love you too…”
…Please don’t let me go…

The boy sighed, sinking onto the wooden deck. Knees tug to his chest as he looks at his mother. “ I’m out of charcoal and parchment paper. “

“Baelfire, I’ve heard some of your mates talk about their “baes.” That’s not you is it? Are you dating? My gods, what if you’re dating? I’m a terrible dad! I haven’t even had the talk with you.”
“Wait… What talk?” Baelfire looked over his shoulder at his stepfather.
“Dad I’m… I’m no one’s ‘bae’. I mean, my name is Baelfire, nicknamed Bae but I’m not… We haven’t even docked long enough for me to be called anyone’s… Anything!”

"According to every source of literature, I am to embarrass you in front of your friends. Should I draw up an image of you as a baby and show it to everyone?"
“Mama, if you could not NOT do that, that would be great. Just because you read it in a book does not make it true. Besides, only you would benefit from your actions.”

Baelfire watched his step-father get down to his level by taking a seat on the edge of the ship. The teenager was not in the best state of mind to listen to him. As he had stated before, Killian never made him ANY promise. Any promise he ever made was to his Mother, not to him. Never did anyone make him a promise. Not to be a good parent to him. Not to be there for him whenever he needed them…
…..Not to abandon him.
Rich, chocolate eyes reflected ENDLESS amounts of emotions. Anger. Betrayal. Hurt. In truth, the list went on– the list of emotions Baelfire couldn’t hide any longer.
I knew your mum was a packaged deal when I met her, and I wouldn’t have married her if I didn’t want both of you.
Baelfire’s heart JOLTED in a sudden sensation of feeling. Someone wanted the both of them? …This was new. Normally, when people wanted his mother, it seemed like they only ever wanted her, never the two of them. Killian, he said so himself they were a package deal… He understood that more than any other man Baelfire could have picked out for his mother. [ [ T h a t ] ] was different, to him. Very different. Then Killian’s promise continued on and Baelfire found himself on the verge of tears.
I’ll never leave your mum, and I’ll never leave you.
The boy ONLY liked Killian for his mother. Killian made her smile, he made her HAPPY. The last time he had seen his mother smile [ [ t h a t ] ] much was a long time from then. She never used to smile that much, not that Bae ever saw. She always seemed to look sad… But now, she has a light inside her eyes again, all because of his step-father. That was the most amazing thing Baelfire could EVER ask for. He’d be abandoned by his parents all over again, if it meant keeping that smile. He wasn’t a perfect boy, he knew that much. He could tell from how he made Killian feel that he DEFINITELY wasn’t a perfect person. He wanted to utter an apology, but couldn’t fit it in. His chest was heavy as the following words slipped into the space between the pirate and the boy. This promise… THIS promise was the promise Baelfire ALWAYS longed to hear since he was told that he would have a new parent. THIS promise was what made Baelfire realized…
I am telling you this now, so that you know it. This is my promise to you; I’ll not let harm come to you–by my hand or by another’s, I offer to you my ship as your safe haven for the rest of your days, and I will love you as my own until my last breath. I made this same promise to your mother, but today, out loud, I am making it to you.
…THIS was the moment Killian became his father.
Drip. Drip. Tears fell from Baelfire’s rich, chocolate eyes onto the wooden deck of the Jolly Roger. “Thank you..” Baelfire whispered, lowering his eyes to the floor. His heart was heavy, but it also felt WHOLE. A feeling that was, in truth, missed by the boy for so long. He had a father again… A father he trusted enough to know he would not let him go….
… That’s ALL he ever wanted. Without thinking, or much time to hesitate, Bae took a couple steps forward and [ [ f l u n g ] ] his arms around his father’s neck, burying himself amongst the leather coat and cotton undershirt. Fingers clutched tight to his jacket, feeling himself let go– tears and all.
“Thank you, Dad”

“Gods, Mama! I’m not coming down and you can’t make me!” Baelfire called down from the crow’s nest of the Jolly Roger. “It wasn’t my fault he fell overboard! He has owned this ship for my lifetime centuries over, he should know where the edge of his ship is!”
m a m a:
Milah pinched the bridge of her nose. Happy thoughts. “It’s hard to know where the edge is when distracted. You know he won’t kill you, right? Not if he wants to get laid ever again.”
Baelfire looked down at his mother, who he could tell was having very disapproving thoughts over his choices. At this point, he was used to it. Certainly, she had to be used to it too, right? This was far from uncommon between him and Captain Hook. “What was he distracted by?” He yelled down at her after avoiding the last part of her sentence. “You don’t know he won’t kill me, Mama. All you know, for now, is that I’m alive. He would sell my soul to a demon to save himself if he had too!”

“Mama?” Bae called from his quarters down the hall, “Why do pirates wear leather? Do we have to wear leather to sail? It’s so hot!” The boy was thankful for the new clothes, but struggling incredibly hard not only to get them on but to find them comfortable for his liking. Maybe he wasn’t his step-father’s son, after all.

I ‘ M S A Y I N G G O O D B Y E
They were sailing around the horizon. The sky was the bluest Baelfire had seen in a very, very long time. Not a cloud danced along it that day, he’d always remember that it. The young boy would also remember that sky as the clearest of days became suddenly RED.
Say something. . .
Everything was happening in the FLASH of a life. They were suddenly being attacked, guns firing off in one direction and the clashing of swords happening in the other. He may have been trained on how to fight, but nothing like this. Killian’s crew was fighting like their lives depended on it while the enemy crew was doing the same. As an instinct, his own sword was drawn to protect himself. He was going to fight. A pirate never backs down from a fight!
For a while, Baelfire was doing well on his own. He was fending on pirate after pirate, making sure not to harm any of the crew he called family in the process. The boy had one goal in mind, to LIVE, and to make it to his parents in one piece. After a few more moments of fighting passed, Bae’s baby brown eyes looked through the fighting to see his mother and step-father fighting back to back in tandem. The end was near, he could feel it-- victory just within reach! A glimmer of hope passed through Bae’s eyes as he went to call out to his parents.
You’re the one that I love. . .
“MAM--!”
. . .And I’m saying goodbye.
Baelfire’s cry never made it beyond his lips that day. Before it could even be heard, a blade serged through his back mere centimeters from his heart and made him stop in his tracks. The world stood STILL as his body registered the pain level it felt radiating from his back. He stood there with his mouth agape as he looked across the deck at his mother. His usual hopeful brown eyes were WIDE as they reflected the pain he felt within them. It took until the count of three before the violent jerk of the long blade that had stabbed him sent the boy’s frail frame back slightly before it crumbled to the deck below his feet.
