Alright, judging by how successful that last Harry Potter experimental question was, Buffy's scooby gang, as a Leverage Crew? Is it too simple to say Buffy as a hitter and Giles as a mastermind?
Which version of the gang are we talking here? Can I go across the whole series? Season 1 only? All Stars? Fuck it I’m cherry picking because THAT’S HOW WE DO.
So, Giles is absolutely on the money. He’s the Mastermind, no doubt. He’s the watcher, he trains the others (mostly Buffy and Faith, but let’s be real, he trains all of them in their own way), he’s the one that works things out, leads research parties, comes up with plans. He’s the Mastermind, at least at first. Like Nate, he graduates out of that position (although I think the others sort of share it after he steps down, rather than one person picking it up).
But Buffy’s not the hitter.
Buffy is the grifter.
Think about it. Pretty, blonde, posterchild for popularity. She’s charismatic. She’s endearing. You like her. You’d probably do anything she asked you to. She’s an an excellent liar, a brilliant actor. She plays the part. The only reason she doesn’t have Sunnydale wrapped around her fucking finger is because all the bullshit with demons and vampires is Too Obvious for no one to ever notice how weird she is. If they could be even slightly more subtle, or pick slightly more convenient times to get up to their nonsense, no one would ever suspect she was anything but what she looks like.
No, the hitter? That’s Faith. And yes, I’m counting her as a Scooby. My girl got done dirty, alright. Granted, she did some people pretty dirty as well. But she was a teenage girl with a really shitty childhood, and I’m not one to use the shitty childhood as a get out of jail free card (get it), but dude. Dude. Every single thing that could’ve gone wrong for her, did. And every time the team had a chance to prove she could trust them, they fucked it up. Mostly Wesley fucked it up, but let’s not go there. And did I mention she was a teenage girl? Also, it helps that she was only Properly Evil for like, a few months, after which she was in a coma, and was Properly Evil for all of five minutes before deciding “Actually I just wanna be Buffy,” because guess what, she never WANTED to be the bad guy-
I’m getting off topic. The point is. Faith is the brawn, alright? Post-Faith, I guess that position goes to Spike, who let’s face it, is basically Buffy’s backup/guard dog from the moment he realizes he can still kill demons, and especially after his big “Oh shit I love the slayer” realization. For the record, bad decisions being made by an ostensibly helplessly evil soulless monster aside, no one EVER had Buffy’s back like Spike did. Not a single damn person. Fucking fight me. Every. Single. Other. Person. Let her down. Constantly. Or they were never in a positoin to properly have her back in the first place. The one time he really did screw it up, he realized how fucked up he was, and went off and got a fucking soul for her, so basically
Riley, for the record, is not a Hitter and does NOT count as a Scooby, because screw that guy. Also while I’m on the subject, screw Xander, because the episode where Riley leaves and Xander gives Buffy the “you’re the bad guy” speech sits so fucking wrong with me, and Xander goddamn Harris can get fucking bent. I’m still off topic, I know, I know. Sorry, I just. I have VERY STRONG OPINIONS ABOUT BUFFY.
ANYWAY. Willow is the hacker, big fucking shock. She’s... she’s literally a hacker, okay. Even when she stops being all computer-y and starts being all witch-y, her approach to witchcraft is... is to hack it. She hacks magic. Literally. That’s what gets her in so much trouble with it, because she’s too fucking good at cheating the system. It’s how she brought Buffy back. She’s the goddamned Hacker. Age. Of. The. Fucking. Geek. Baby.
Thief............ hmph. I don’t know?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?
See, the thing is, basically all of the properly involved Scoobies had to steal something at one point or another, all with basically the same level of success, so... wait.
Okay. No. The thief is Dawn.
She’s literally a thief! She steals from everybody all the goddamned time! With varying degrees of success, sure. But if she was actually trained at it, she’d be better than all of them. She’s the only Little Sibling out of the bunch (Well, okay, Tara had an older brother, but her homelife was so fucked she has Very Different Younger Sister energy than Dawn). She has a specific talent for it that I bet would serve her well if she was actually trained. I honestly at this point have read so much fanfic that I cannot for the life or me remember if canon!Spike ever helped teach her to knick stuff or if that’s just widely accepted fanon!Spike because people love that dynamic (as they should, it’s great). I’m doing a rewatch but... uh... I kinda stopped partway through S5 because I’m like four episodes away from The Body and gods I just can’t take it. Point being, I dunno if that’s legit or not. BUT. If it were legit, and she was taught how to steal, she’d be great at it.
I guess Spike is kind of also the thief. But he’s also the only one of the scoobies that’s properly been a villain (I’m not counting Faith or Willow’s brief insanity, and Angel isn’t the villain, Angelus is, so...), so naturally he’s got the shady skills. He can kind of grift and mastermind, too, except he’s too impatient for it, which is why he ends up stuck as a hitter most of the time. Everything else is too slow for his ass. See, the entirety of S2.
For fun, under the cut, the remaining scoobies and what position they’re best suited for:
Xander: Hitter??? He’s not got the super strength and he’s kind of played for laughs, but there was that whole bit where he had the tactical training from his brief stint as GI Joe in the Halloween episode. He’s a decent tactician, which is kind of the hitter’s job. I bet that if the wasn’t so busy feeling inferior to Buffy and he actually like. Trained. He could be a decent fighter.
Cordelia: Straight fucking grifter. Which she proves plenty of times on Angel. It’s extra great because she basically IS Sophie, what with the whole “can grift like a boss but put her on stage and she’s terrible” bit. She’s also a decent mastermind, also showcased on Angel. She whips him into shape from day one, and is the only thing that keeps AI running half the time. Also not unlike Sophie. Honestly Cordelia is my favorite character from the OG cast. She deserved better.
Angel: Mastermind. He’s got all of Angelus’ brains, remember, just not necessarily any reason to use them. He’s smart, though, and definitely good at planning. He’s also really into knowing the most and keeping his cards close to his chest. The parallels with Nate are a little strong, honestly, because he also has that whole... guilty conscience spiraling downward holier than thou thing going on. And yes, I do ship him and Cordy, thanks for asking.
Oz: Hacker! Not a lot of people really remember this, since his prominent character traits were “In a band”, “Willow’s boyfriend”, and “werewolf”. Plus there’s the whole flunked-senior-year plot point which I honestly think they did just to keep him around. But the first time Oz actually properly interacted with Willow was because they’d both gotten singled out for their badass computer skills on career day. He’s very nearly as good as her.
Anya: Grifter. I mean, the whole vengeance demon schtick relies on the grift. She’s very good at it. Which, she ought to be, she’s been doing it for over a thousand years. It’s sort of hilarious though because it seems like the second she loses her powers, she also loses her ability to blend in. I think that’s likely because she’s used to short term cons, and running the long con that is being human again is more difficult. Still, this is where she shines.
Riley: He doesn’t count because I kinda hate him. But fine if you wanna go there. Hitter. He doesn’t deserve the title though because Eliot is both brains and brawn and Riley can’t think his way out of a paper sack without someone giving him directions, and even then it’s dicey.
Tara: This one is super hard for me! I can’t see her as any of the actual team positions. I suppose the one skill she displays would be grifting, since she does try to hide her identity as a supposed demon from the others for a while before her birthday comes up. But honestly I see her less as a member of the crew and more as a Maggie. Voice of reason, moral high ground, not putting up with shenanigans if she can help it... yeah. Tara’s the Maggie. Every crew needs one.

korean leverage is interesting in a lot of ways. but one thing that sticks out early on is that the plots are twice as long, split over two hour-long episodes. (also i think their hour eps are a little longer than a us hour ep, probably because us ads are a menace.)
of course, streaming when it’s all released means my experience is different than week-by-week, but still.
compared to the quicker plots of the original, you get much more character development per episode. since they’re splitting up a con over two hours, they aren’t forced to focus on it as much in a given episode as the original (and redemption, for that matter).
especially since they only got one season for the korean version, this is a choice i really enjoy. these characters are similar in broad stokes to the original but they’re also quite different, and i love to see how the korean cast&crew makes the premise their own.
i will say i find it. mmm. minorly annoying that hardison’s marginalized status gets reduced to punk-bleached-hair in the korean show— but i have very little sense of what marginal identity politics look like in korea, so i could be missing context.
i just think that the aspect of hardison that has to deal with discrimination (using the anonymous nature of coding as a shield, how it informs his background and outlook, how the team works with it, around it, when they face it head-on) is one of THE most interesting and compelling parts of leverage. absolutely one of the most baller parts of the show. so to NOT have that feels so… idk. almost disrespectful? like a lost opportunity? i mean i wouldn’t want the korean actor to wear blackface or whatever. and i have no idea what race politics are like in korea, let alone what they’re like in korean media production and distribution. so if it was bleached hair was the best they could do, like, i have no idea.
perhaps it’s also that hodge wasn’t in much of redemption. maybe i just miss hardison. god i’m gonna be sad when i run out of the korean version. i love leverage. gotta trawl for fanfics after this

The Lovers: HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT (1937) by R. Emmet Sweeney
HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT (1937) was made under impossible circumstances. It started shooting with half of a script, requiring much of it to be improvised – including the last act’s sinking ship, which the producer conceived during the final week of filming. And yet it is one of the most seductively romantic dramas ever produced in Hollywood, with director Frank Borzage and stars Jean Arthur and Charles Boyer conjuring emotions of such intensity they cut through the absurdity of the plot machinations. Andrew Sarris wrote it was a “profound expression of Borzage’s commitment to love over probability.” HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT has never been out on DVD in the United States, but it is now streaming on the Criterion Channel of FilmStruck.
“It would be a relief for me to get away from doing these FLIRTATION WALKs and doing the same story in three different Academies. I’d like to take a crack at something different!” Borzage was getting tired of the enlistment musical comedies Warner Bros. kept assigning him to (like FLIRTATION WALK [‘34] and SHIPMATES FOREVER [‘35]), so he was eager for his loan-out to Walter Wanger at United Artists for HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT. Wanger was in the Samuel Goldwyn mode, a producer of “quality” whose films also made money. This is why United Artists signed him away from Paramount.
Wanger’s first film with United Artists was Fritz Lang’s YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE (‘37). HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT would follow using most of the same crew, including screenwriters Gene Towne and C. Graham Baker, an infamously successful duo whose vulgar behind-the-scenes antics, like using toilet paper as note cards, became the subject of the James Cagney-Pat O’Brien comedy BOY MEETS GIRL (‘38). This time, however, their much-vaunted speed wasn’t fast enough. When HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT started shooting, only 52-pages (about half), of the script had been completed. The actors and sets had already been contracted and reserved, so there couldn’t be any delays. So, once they pushed past the original pages, Towne and Baker would submit new pages each morning, which Borzage and his cast and crew would work with and improvise around as they saw fit.
The spine of the story concerns a simple love triangle between bored wife Irene Vail (Jean Arthur), her jealous shipbuilding husband Bruce (Colin Clive, who gives a trembling, open nerved performance – he was a severe alcoholic and would die soon after filming from tuberculosis) and the debonair head waiter Paul Dumond (Charles Boyer) who sweeps Irene off her feet. Irene is fed up with Bruce’s monstrous jealousies, and is eager for him to sign divorce papers. Bruce refuses to yield and instead concocts a frame-up job in which Irene will be caught in flagrante with Bruce’s driver. Using those pictures as leverage, Bruce hopes it will get Irene to back off the divorce. Nothing goes as planned, for Paul Dumond walks by and inserts himself into the proceedings, knocking down the driver and pretending to be a jewelry thief to spirit Irene out of the room. This bit of underhanded gallantry gets Irene all flustered, and after he reveals his true identity as a non-thief, her multi-octave “oh!” implies a flustered interest. She agrees to have a late-night dinner with him at the Chateau Bleu.
It is a magical sequence that seems tossed off while watching but reveals a delicate and intricate design. Boyer plays Paul as a temporary big shot, convincing the chef Cesare (played with jocular verve by Leo Carrillo) with flattery to keep the restaurant open, and convincing the band (with champagne) to keep playing. His flirtatious approach is one of misdirection. He first introduced himself as a thief, which he already recanted. Here he pretends to be a bigwig, when in fact he is a head waiter at this very restaurant. He will reveal that later, for now he continues the tactic – he tells Irene that he lives with a woman and she gets visibly downcast – then draws a face on his fingers to show that woman to be a hand puppet. Irene likes being kept on her toes figuratively and literally, as when she kicks her shoes off during her dance with Paul. It is her American forthrightness and lack of pretension that immediately attracts her to him. And it is his theatricality and spark that appeals to her, regardless of his station in life. They spend a night together – they joke like it’s a “year” – before circumstances once again pull them apart.
In the original script, Bruce’s driver dies from an inadvertent blow by Paul. But wanting to elicit more audience sympathy after a poor press screening, they had Bruce return to the scene and kill the driver himself, while framing Paul for the murder. Irene agrees to halt divorce proceedings with Bruce if he would keep Paul from harm. And everything goes wild from there, with Paul (and Cesare) moving to New York in search of Irene, taking jobs in a posh restaurant in hopes of luring her there (no one else makes Lobster Cardinale like Cesare).
The plot keeps folding in on itself while the faces of Boyer and Arthur remain beatific, their love a force that transcends the screenwriters’ tricks. Borzage keeps the focus on the white-hot intensity of their attraction, which lingers throughout the elongation of their separation. And when they finally meet again, after all the delays and villainy and bad luck coincidences, it is a purely joyous occasion, their gazes like tractor beams, their smiles explosions. They play husband and wife in the restaurant kitchen, Boyer in a chef’s hat and Jean Arthur in an apron, playacting the life they once thought would be theirs.
And it might have ended there, but according to Borzage biographer Herve Dumont, “one week before the end, just after Christmas, Wanger arrived with a miniature model of an ocean liner. The scriptwriters didn’t know how to end their story, so why not go out with a bang? The producer explained to the stupefied filmmaker that they would recreate the sinking of the Titanic, along those lines!” So, in an improbable sequence in a film full of improbables, Borzage directs the sinking of an international passenger ship in no time with no prep, utilizing lots of fog to block out the sets and setting off his lovers as transcendent beings who were ready to meet their doom as long as they were together.
This insane, ridiculous request just heightened the intensity of the emotions of this film – Borzage takes the time to give extreme close-ups to weeping passengers (including future filmmaker Robert Parrish), embracing the melodrama of the sequence. The conversation held between Irene and Paul, as they think they are about to die, is one of intense gentleness. They ask each other the simplest of questions – what the other was like as a child – to learn more about the other right up until the end. They try to fill in the past until the present snuffs it out, and lit against the smoke and fog, their faces about to be erased, they find their own kind of immortality.

The Air Power and DARPA at the moment are testing new and software program configured to allow 4th and fifth Technology plane to command drones from the cockpit within the air, bringing new ranges of autonomy, extra assault choices and a bunch of recent reconnaissance benefits to air warfare.
Working with BAE Methods at Edwards Air Power Base, Calif., Air Power take a look at pilots are combining ground-based simulators with airborne Learjets to display how 4th era cockpit avionics can direct drones from the air, BAE Methods builders stated.
“The airplane was structurally configured to permit us to take our autonomy and join it on to the flight management system of the airplane,” Skip Stolz, Director of Strategic Growth for Autonomy Management, informed Warrior Maven in an interview.
Demonstrations with specifically configured Learjets are meant as an interim step on path to integrating this sort of system into an operational F-15, F-16 and even F-35, builders stated.
Utilizing commonplace data-link know-how, the jets function with a semi-autonomous software program referred to as Distributed Battle Administration, which permits new ranges of compressed airborne knowledge switch, weapons integration and sensor operations, Stolz defined.
A latest Mitchell Institute paper, titled “Manned-Unmanned Plane Teaming: Taking Fight Airpower to the Subsequent Degree,” cites Distributed Battle Administration software program as a “system-of-systems future panorama for warfare, wherein networks of manned and unmanned platforms, weapons, sensors and digital warfare programs work together.”
The paper provides that DARPA and the Air Power Analysis Laboratory efficiently examined DBM final yr.
In the intervening time, the flight path, sensor payload and weapons disposal of airborne drones akin to Air Power Predators, International Hawks and Reapers are coordinated from floor management stations. Nonetheless, due at the very least partially to fast advances in autonomy, the idea of an autonomous or “semi-autonomous” wingman – is arriving even sooner than anticipated.
DARPA, Air Power Analysis Laboratory and business have been growing this idea for fairly a while now. The present trajectory, or fast evolution of processing velocity and superior algorithms is enabling fast acceleration. A fighter-jet plane will have the ability to present a drone with duties and goals, handle sensor payload and direct flight-path from the air.
As an example, real-time video feeds from the electro-optical/infrared sensors on board an Air Power Predator, Reaper or International Hawk drone might go immediately into an F-15, F-22 or F-35 cockpit, while not having to go to a floor management station. This might velocity up focusing on and tactical enter from drones on reconnaissance missions within the neighborhood of the place a fighter pilot may need to assault. In fast-moving fight circumstances involving each air-to-air and air-to-ground threats, elevated velocity might make a big distinction.
The Mitchell Institute essay additionally factors to a less-frequently mentioned, but extremely important benefit provided by manned-unmanned teaming. Merely put, it might massively assist mitigate the present Air Power bomber and fighter jet scarcity. It’s typically talked about that there merely will not be sufficient Air Power belongings accessible to fulfill present demand. Consequently, having an enormous fleet of fighter-jet operated drones might radically enhance the operational scope of Air Power missions.
Specifically, the Mitchell Institute paper mentions that ever since B-2 and F-22 manufacturing had been lower effectively wanting the preliminary intent years in the past – the Air Power has since been pressured to function with inadequate air belongings.
“A useful resource of 185 fighters (F-22s) and 20 bombers (B-2s) is essentially restricted in world the place their capabilities are in excessive demand. Airmen and their plane, irrespective of how effectively skilled or technologically superior, can’t be in two locations without delay,” the paper writes.
Fighter-jet managed drones is also programmed to fly into closely defended or high-risk areas forward of manned-fighter jets with the intention to assess enemy air defenses and scale back danger to pilots. Moreover, given the fast-evolving efficacy of recent air-defenses, drones might fly into high-threat or heavily-contested areas to conduct ISR, scout enemy belongings and even operate as a weapons truck to assault enemy targets.
Advances in laptop energy, processing velocity and AI are quickly altering the scope of what platforms are capable of carry out while not having human intervention. That is largely growing within the type of what Air Power scientists describe as “resolution aide help,” which means machines will have the ability to higher interpret, arrange, analyze and talk data to a a lot better extent – with out have people handle every particular person activity.
“Completely different individuals have completely different views. We consider in a control-based method that leverages AI however doesn’t relinquish management to AI. As a pilot develops belief, he is aware of what that plane can do and tells it to do one thing,” Stolz stated.
Presently, there’s widespread consensus that, in accordance with DoD doctrine, choices concerning the usage of deadly power ought to at all times be made by a “human-in-the-loop,” regardless of advances in autonomy which now allow unmanned programs to trace, purchase and destroy targets while not having human intervention.
However, the Mitchell Institute paper introduces a technique to keep this key doctrinal premise, but additionally enhance unmanned enemy assaults by what DARPA and the Air Power Analysis Lab name “adaptive kill webs.”
“DARPA and AFRL will kind adaptive kill webs wherein autonomous plane flying in collaboration with manned plane might obtain inputs from a spread of actors… akin to a pilot of a manned plane,” the paper says.
By extension, the paper explains that – within the occasion that a pilot is shot down – drone command and management operations might shift to a bigger manned “battle supervisor” plane akin to an E-Three Airborne Warning and Management System or E-Eight Joint Surveillance and Goal Assault Radar System.
One other benefit of those technological advances is that one human might have a capability to regulate a number of drones and carry out a command and management operate – whereas drones execute numerous duties akin to sensor features, focusing on, weapons transport or digital warfare actions, the previous Air Power Chief Scientist informed Warrior Maven in a earlier interview.
In the intervening time, a number of people are sometimes wanted to regulate a single drone, and new algorithms growing autonomy for drones might enormously change this ratio. Air Power scientists have defined a possible future situation whereby one human is ready to management 10 – and even 100 – drones.
Algorithms might progress to the purpose the place a drone, akin to a Predator or a Reaper, may have the ability to observe a fighter plane by itself – while not having its flight path navigated from human route from the bottom.
In contrast to floor robotics whereby autonomy algorithms must deal with a capability to maneuver shortly in relation to unanticipated developments and different transferring objects, easy autonomous flight steering from the air is far more manageable. Since there are sometimes fewer obstacles within the air in contrast with the bottom, drones above the bottom will be programmed extra simply to fly towards sure pre-determined areas, typically referred to as a “way-points.”
The Military has superior manned-unmanned teaming know-how in its helicopter fleet –successfully engineering Apache and Kiowa air crews to regulate UAS flight paths and sensor payloads from the air within the cockpit. Military officers say this know-how has yielded profitable fight leads to Afghanistan. Military program managers have informed Warrior Maven that manned-unmanned teaming permits Apache pilots to seek out and establish enemy targets, earlier than they even take off.
Senior Air Power leaders have stated that the companies’ new next-generation bomber program, the B-21 Raider, can be engineered to fly manned and unmanned missions.
Additionally, in September of 2013, the Air Power and Boeing flew an unmanned F-16 at supersonic speeds for the primary time at Tyndall Air Power Base, Fla. The unmanned fighter was capable of launch, maneuver and return to base with out a pilot.
Curiously, the Mitchell Institute paper references a present Air Power-Boeing effort to engineer older F-16s in order that they may operate as drones.
“In 2017, Boeing, the prime contractor for the QF-16 charged with reactivating the legacy fighters from their desert storage and making vital modifications, was awarded a $24.6 million contract to transform 18 F-16s into QF-16 goal drones,” the paper writes.
On the identical time, regardless of the velocity at which unmanned know-how is progressing, many scientist and weapons’ builders are of the view that human pilots will nonetheless be wanted – given the velocity at which the human mind can shortly reply to unanticipated developments.
“With regards to sure sorts of resolution making and issues requiring an intuitive contextual understanding, machines will not be but capable of do these issues. Computer systems can course of enormous quantities of knowledge,” Stolz stated
There may be typically a two-second lengthy lag time earlier than a UAS within the air can reply to or implement instructions from a distant pilot in a floor station, a circumstance which underscores the necessity for manned pilots in terms of fighter jets, Air Power officers stated.
Due to this fact, whereas cargo planes or bombers with much less of a have to maneuver within the skies is perhaps extra simply capable of embrace autonomous flight – fighter jets will nonetheless enormously profit from human piloting, Air Power scientists have stated.
Whereas laptop processing velocity and algorithms proceed to evolve at an alarming tempo, it nonetheless stays tough to engineer a machine capable of make extra subjective determinations or reply shortly to a bunch of interwoven, fast-changing variables.
Nonetheless, sensor know-how is progressing shortly, the purpose the place fighter pilots will more and more have the ability to establish threats at a lot better distances, subsequently take away the necessity to dogfight. Consequently, there could also be room for an unmanned fighter jet within the not-too-distant future, given the tempo of bettering autonomous know-how.

The Costly Drive Down the Ad Tech “Road of Regret”
Digital marketers have a host of technology options to choose from. Matt Martella, SVP, Business Development at Conversant, explains how marketers can avoid going down the 18-month “road to regret” by considering five areas before making any technology decisions
The rapidly moving ad tech landscape is filled with great ideas, false promises and a massive waste of time and money for marketers. For years, marketers pieced together different point solutions out of fear of putting all their eggs in one basket and as a natural result of vendor relationships and personal preferences. Frankenstein’s monster quickly emerged as marketers stitched together a data onboarder, DMP and DSP along with other necessary technologies including cross-device graphs, dynamic creative engines and attribution software.
A reliance on point solutions usually comes from one of two actors. Marketers either rely on their creative or media agency, who uses several solutions themselves, or they attempt to build a best-in-breed tech stack in-house. Both come with limitations and impact business. Working through an agency requires marketer’s to put their digital media buying in the hands of potentially inexperienced operators. The result is inefficient media buying compounded by inaccurate program measurement. In-house, DIY tech solutions are usually driven by the aspiration of control and cost transparency. Some of the world’s most recognizable brands are making a push into the DIY space, letting hubris get the best of them; unfortunately, it’s a decision that usually ends poorly due to the failure to understand ad technology, how to run it, its limitations and how fast it changes. Hidden costs are not accounted for and there is rarely enough expertise in-house integrate and optimize these solutions.
The DIY approach is like buying an Indy Car. For the right amount of money, anyone can buy an expensive race car, but without a skilled driver, expert mechanics and savvy pit crew, you will never win races. Unfortunately, I’ve met with hundreds of marketers who make similar mistakes. It’s led them down, what I call, the 18-month “Road of Regret.” It starts with marketers’ desire to improve their digital media buying but goes awry from the start as they turn to agencies or their own solutions. Travelling down the road—along the timeline of procurement, integration, deployment—marketers realize tech implementation and media buying optimization is hard without the right driver or crew. In my experience, it takes 18 months of unrealized cost savings and a lack of efficiency before a marketer is willing to raise a white flag.
Save yourself from sputtering down the road. Consider the following five areas when making your technology decisions to assure success for your company and marketing teams.
Identify and select a people-based solution. Vet solutions that are industry-leading in people-based identity resolution. You’ll want to identify solutions that offer a robust cross-device graph, that can deterministically match and reach real people (not just cookies) at scale and maintain persistence.
Anything other than real-time digital marketing is unacceptable. Don’t settle for batch-driven digital media buying. Find solutions that align identification to rich profiles that are updated in real time and are leveraging real-time artificial intelligence and machine learning to deploy dynamic creative in real time.
Don’t fall for the easy integration hype. Don’t let software companies sell you the promise of easy integration. Remember, they win when you sign the contract; you do not. Find solutions that are outcome-based and are tied to your success from Day One.
Understand total cost of ownership. Don’t fall for the consulting study that convinces you that it’s cheaper to build a solution yourself. Media costs are just one of many expenses. Factor in the total return on marketing investment (ROMI), which includes software, support, people, time, attrition, expertise, technology advancements. Is this where you want to become an expert or do you want to rely on experts to execute your strategies?
Don’t trust the “experts.” Be careful with agencies that offer their own trading desks and analysts who tell you which solutions to buy. As with any solution, do your homework to verify their claims or recommendations. Assume positive intent, but remember, their success may not be aligned with your own.
It’s a natural tendency to want to work with past partners or build your own solution. Both options provide a sense of familiarity that is often reassuring when you’re dealing with the massive undertaking that is digital marketing. What’s more, DIY solutions offer the promise of total control and ownership of your technology and data—and some degree of proprietary value—if successful. However, as is the case with any venture, things may not always go as planned. That’s the entry point to the Road of Regret. Whether or not you make that journey is up to you.
