Chief Master Sergeant Wayne Fisk High Risk, High Reward
Son Tay Raid On November 21, 1970, then SSgt. Wayne Fisk, a pararescueman, joined the all-volunteer search and rescue operation at Son Tay, North Vietnam. Sixty-one American POWs were reportedly held at the camp. Although no prisoners were found, the raid was considered a tactical success. On the return flight, Sergeant Fisk rescued a downed pilot from a separate mission. His overall actions earned him his first Silver Star.
SS Mayaguez Incident Aboard a CH-53 helicopter, call sign Knife-51, TSgt. Fisk volunteered to extract American forces off Koh Tang Island in May 1975. As a pararescue specialist, he was responsible for retrieving US service members from the island. Despite heavy weapons and rocket fire, Knife-51 landed and evacuated the remaining personnel. TSgt. Fisk’s actions earned him a second Silver Star.
During his distinguished career, Chief Fisk served on the primary recovery team of NASA Apollo missions 8, 9, and 10. He is also credited with being the last American to engage communist forces in Southeast Asia. Finally, Chief Fisk led the efforts to establish the USAF Enlisted Heritage Hall, which preserves the history of enlisted Airmen, serving as it first director.
FINAL COMBAT: THE MAYAGUEZ INCIDENT AT KOH TANG After South Vietnam fell to communist forces, the US was again involved in combat in Southeast Asia. In May 1975, the Cambodian Khmer Rouge Navy seized the American cargo ship SS Mayaguez and its crew of thirty-nine in international waters.
President Gerald Ford acted decisively to rescue the crew. Air Force gunships sank three Cambodian patrol boats to prevent them from taking the Mayaguez’s crew from Koh Tang to the mainland. Soon after, US Marines boarded the Mayaguez and found it abandoned.
Near Disaster Marines landed on Koh Tang in Air Force helicopters to rescue the crew, but incomplete intelligence made the operation a near disaster. The Cambodians shot down four helicopters, damaged five more, and killed fourteen Americans. More troops moved in urgently to reinforce the 131 Marines and five USAF aircrew trapped on Koh Tang.
As the assault continued, the Mayaguez crew appeared in a small boat, and were rescued unharmed. President Ford halted offensive action, and the operation shifted from assault to evacuation.
Determined Evacuation Another 100 Marines moved into Koh Tang to reinforce and extract the trapped Americans. Only three USAF helicopters were left to extract more than 200 troops. On the last trip to the beach, USAF pararescueman TSgt Wayne Fisk left his helicopter to find two missing Marines still laying down covering fire. He led them to the helicopter, and the fourteen-hour mission ended.
Three Marines, inadvertently left on the island in the darkness and confusion, were killed and buried within a few days by the Khmer Rouge. Total US casualties included eighteen dead and fifty wounded. Twenty-three more USAF personnel died in a support force helicopter crash in Thailand due to mechanical failure.
Quick, effective action at Koh Tang by USAF, Marine, and Navy forces prevented a bad situation from becoming much worse. In particular, the persistence, determination, and heroism of USAF helicopter crews saved many lives. The action at Koh Tang between May 12-15, 1975, was the last combat action in Southeast Asia for US forces. Source

USAF F-35 Demonstration Team announces new pilot and commander
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/02/2024 - 08:30 in Demonstration Squads, Military
U.S. Air Force Captain Melanie "MACH" Kluesner, pilot of the F-35A Lightning II assigned to the 421º Fighter Squadron, became the new certified pilot and commander of the F-35A Demonstration Team, during the Heritage Flight Training Course of the Air Combat Command at Davis-Monthan Air Base, Arizona, on March 1º, 2024.
Kluesner comes from a military family and was inspired from a very young age by her parents, both U.S. Air Force pilots, to become a fighter pilot.

(Photo: U.S. Air Force / 1st Lt. Nathan Poblete)
“When I was a child, I really appreciated my parents, family and friends who believed in me and encouraged me to follow my dream of becoming a fighter pilot,” Kluesner said. "My father was a demonstration pilot of the Pacific Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon in the 1980s and my mother was the first class of women graduated from the Air Force Academy. She graduated in pilot training as a qualified hunter, but at that time women were not allowed to pilot fighters. My parents are a great inspiration to me and have incredible stories of their careers."

After graduating from the University of Southern California, Kluesner was commissioned with the U.S. Air Force in 2014. She is a veteran combat fighter pilot with more than 1,000 hours of experience in a variety of aircraft, including the T-6A Texan II, T-38 Talon, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-35B and F-35A Lightning II.
"It was a long way to get where I am and there is nothing more rewarding than doing a job you love for something that is bigger than yourself," Kluesner said. "To be the demonstration pilot means spreading this message to the next generation and I am very excited for the start of the air show season."
The commander of the F-35A Demonstration Team is not only responsible for an itinerant team of 14 maintainers and support personnel, but also reinforces the team's mission around the world each year, showing the F-35's combat capabilities and its unique experiences to recruit, retain and inspire thousands of spectators in each air show.
"I think it's very important for people to realize that if you want to be a fighter pilot or serve in the Air Force, it doesn't matter how you look or if you fit the specific mold," Kluesner explained. "What matters is to be willing to remain disciplined, work hard, work as a team and worry about serving your country. I am honored to be in this position and I hope that everyone who watches the demonstration will feel inspired to dream big, just as I was when I was a child."

United Launch Alliance Successfully Launches AEHF-4 Mission
ULA - Atlas V / AEHF-4 Mission poster. Oct. 17, 2018
Image above: Atlas V rocket carrying the fourth Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) mission launch. A United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket carrying the fourth Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) mission for the U.S. Air Force lifted off from Space Launch Complex-41 on Oct. 17 at 12:15 a.m. EDT. The launch of AEHF-4 marks ULA’s 50th launch for the U.S. Air Force; ULA’s first Air Force mission was Space Test Program-1 (STP-1), launched March 8, 2007.
Atlas V AEHF-4 Launch Highlights
“ULA’s unparalleled record of successfully launching and placing payloads in orbit signifies our profound commitment to national defense,” said Tory Bruno, ULA president and CEO. “We remain the only launch provider capable of placing our customers’ payloads into any national security space orbit, anytime, which we’ve proudly exhibited through 50 launches for the U.S. Air Force.” “Over the past 12 years, the men and women of ULA have reliably delivered dozens of Air Force payloads into orbit from GPS to WGS, and SBIRS to AEHF,” said Gen. Jay Raymond, commander of Air Force Space Command. “ULA’s unprecedented 100 percent launch success has directly contributed to our national security. Congratulations to the entire launch team on a successful 50th launch for the U.S. Air Force.”
AEHF-4 satellite
This mission launched aboard an Atlas V Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) 551 configuration vehicle, which includes a 5-meter large Payload Fairing (PLF) and stands at 197 ft. tall. Producing more than two and a half million pounds of thrust at liftoff, the Atlas V 551 configuration rocket is the most powerful in the Atlas V fleet. The 551 rocket has launched groundbreaking missions for our nation—from the critically important Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) constellation to historic science missions including New Horizons, the first mission to Pluto, and the Juno mission to Jupiter. The AEHF system, developed by Lockheed Martin, provides vastly improved global, survivable, protected communications capabilities for strategic command and tactical warfighters. “Today’s launch exemplifies ULA’s ongoing commitment to 100 percent mission success,” said Gary Wentz, ULA vice president of Government and Commercial Programs.”My sincere thanks to the entire ULA team and our mission partners who made this, our 50th launch for the U.S. Air Force, possible.” AEHF-4 is ULA’s eighth launch in 2018 and 131st successful launch since the company was formed in December 2006. ULA's next launch is the NROL-71 mission for the National Reconnaisance Office on a Delta IV Heavy rocket. The launch is scheduled for Nov. 29 from Space Launch Complex-6 at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. With more than a century of combined heritage, ULA is the world’s most experienced and reliable launch service provider. ULA has successfully delivered more than 130 satellites to orbit that provide Earth observation capabilities, enable global communications, unlock the mysteries of our solar system, and support life-saving technology. The aircraft served as a firebomber in Alaska until 1983, when it was restored and sent to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra; it flew until 1987 before being sent to long term storage. Yanks acquired it in 1999 and again restored it to airworthiness, although it is not regularly flown.
Old Gray Mare, 44-86797, Lauridsen Aviation Museum
Overall light gray paint scheme, red engine cowlings, yellow leading edges of wings, post-war national insignia, sometimes seen with red/yellow rudders. The aircraft served with Bendix until the early 1970s when it was converted into a tanker and relocated to Canada. Aero Trader restored the aircraft starting in 1994, with a first flight in 1999; the museum acquired it in 2011.
Lady Luck, 45-8884, Lady Luck LLC
Overall polished aluminum finish, black engine nacelles, black USAF on starboard upper wing, pinup nose art on both sides of the fuselage. The aircraft had an unremarkable civilian career, being seized by Customs agents after an illegal sale to Venezuela in 1966, and again by the Canadian Ministry of Transport in 1978 for improper registration. It then passed into museum life, first with the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, and then later to Air Acres in Georgia; Aero Trader restored the aircraft to military configuration between 2004 and 2007 for its current owners.
Axis Nightmare, 45-8898, TriState Warbird Museum
Two-tone brown and olive upper surfaces, light blue lower surfaces, invasion stripes on fuselage and outer wings, RAF fin flash on rudders, late-war US national insignia, Grim Reaper nose art. It flew with Warbirds Inc. with the current paint scheme starting in 1999, and was acquired by the museum in 2004. Axis Nightmare was the penultimate B-25 produced, with production ending after aircraft 45-8899 on 15 August 1945.
Devil Dog, 44-86758, Commemorative Air Force - Devil Dog Squadron
Overall sea blue paint scheme, yellow 3 on rudders and engine cowlings, bulldog nose art, solid strafing nose, no dorsal turret present. Semper Fi, 44-30988/35857, Commemorative Air Force - Southern California Wing
Dark blue top surfaces, light blue fuselage, white lower surfaces, white MB II on fuselage sides, late-war national insignia, CAF logo behind cockpit windows. The aircraft served as an executive transport for much of its civilian life, before being abandoned sometime in the 1970s. It was acquired by the CAF in 1988 and extensively restored to airworthiness, flying again in 2016. It is the only known airworthy PBJ-1J aircraft at this time.
Close to 50 B-25s are currently airworthy today, with dozens more in storage or under restoration. The type’s survival can almost single-handedly be traced to the production of Catch-22 in 1970, which used 18 of the aircraft for both screen and camera roles. With the relative availability of spare parts, and tireless efforts of restoration teams worldwide, the B-25 is likely to remain in the skies for decades to come.

See how was the spectacular USAF flyby at Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles
Five military aircraft flew over at SoFi Stadium to celebrate 75 years of the U.S. Air Force.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 02/14/2020 - 07:32 am in Air Shows, Demonstration Squads, Military
Before Super Bowl LVI on January 13 in Los Angeles, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) presented American football fans with a rare "five-plane formation" to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force.
The overflight above SoFi Stadium involved five different types of military aircraft flying in formation, from USAF bases in five different states.
The participating aircraft were:
F-35 Lightning from Hill Air Base in Utah
P-51 Mustang of the Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation, Chino, California
Davis-Monthan Air Base A-10C Thunderbolt II, Arizona
F-16 Fighting Falcon of Shaw Air Base, South Carolina
F-22A Raptor from Langley Air Base, Virginia
The U.S. Air Force said it performs about 1,000 overflights per year. And while they “serve as a way to show the capabilities of our aircraft, while inspiring patriotism and future generations of aviation enthusiasts,” the U.S. Air Force also says that overflights do not incur additional costs for taxpayers and serve as a valuable training experience for pilots, crew and other employees.
Major Kristin “Beo” Wolfe, who is Commander of the F-35A Lightning II Demonstration Team at Hill Air Base in Utah, piloted the F-35 as part of the Heritage flight in the Super Bowl.
"It will be really exciting for me, as a pilot, to see how everything fits together," Maj. Wolfe said. She flew alongside other special and iconic aircraft
The five aircraft flying in formation on January 13, before Super Bowl LVI. (Photo: Mark Holtzman via USAF)
Major Wolfe has been serving in the USAF for more than a decade and arrived at the F-35 Demo Team after serving in combat missions with the F-35 and F-22 Raptor.
“It is (F-35) the newest USAF fighter we have. It is the most technologically advanced. We are still receiving new planes at Hill Air Base as we speak, so it is very cool to receive the latest technology directly from Fort Worth to Hill," she said.
Steve Hinton, veteran pilot who was in charge of the P-51 Mustang during the overflight.
Steve Hinton, who has spent the last 25 years flying aircraft with the U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight team, spoke about the unique opportunity that the USAF will have to display its best military equipment in front of one of the largest stages in the world.
“It is an honor to be part of this elite group,” Hinton said. “The demonstration teams are composed of our best aviators, not that they are better than the others, but they represent our armed forces well and, in my experience with them for the last 25 years, I am very proud to be part of it.”
In preparation for the 2022 Super Bowl LVI Heritage Flyover, all aircraft rehearsed the flight in formation before flying over SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. All demonstration teams with a single aircraft of the Air Combat Command made the scheduled and historic overflight of Super Bowl LVI. Demonstration teams spent time with students from the Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos, before taking off to rehearse.
“I have never flown a formation with five planes, with the four of us plus a warbird in it, so this will be fun and also challenging,” Maj. Wolfe, who will be flying his first official overflight event in an F-35.
“It is much more complicated than, say, four F-35-only planes flying over Utah stadium. It's more complex because there are five planes with different characteristics, so all five planes fly differently, with different speeds, just as they have a different wingspan, different length and doing this kind of thing as a formation although looking symmetrical and really looking easy, this is a challenge in itself and then having to hit the moment of an overflight is really complex.”
