How many seasons into a show do you accept you're never gonna like a character?
(Also while I'm here I hated some of the dialog in the trans ep)

What a Difference a Day Makes
Tumblr media
“I think my mom put it best. She said, ‘Little girls soften their daddy’s hearts.” —Paul Walker
“Bye, baby. Have fun!” Finn said to Rachel as she headed out of the apartment. She was going to spend the day with Mila just having a girl’s day and he knew that she needed it. He knew that Rachel loved being a mom. He knew that she loved that his job made it possible for her to stay home with Peyton but he also knew that she needed a break sometimes. Plus, he had a few weeks off from games before playoffs started and he wanted to spend as much of that time with Peyton as possible. As he turned to face his daughter who was seated in her high chair, he couldn’t help but smile softly at her. Everything about Peyton was perfect and he knew that he had never loved anyone or anything as quickly as her. She was his baby girl and he was determined to make sure that he was the best father possible for her. No matter what anyone said, he would always be the best father he could be for her. “Hey princess! Did mommy make sure you had a nice breakfast before she left?” he said with a smile before he got her out of her high chair and held her in his arms. Finn pressed a kiss to her cheek and he looked at her lovingly as she giggled and gripped tightly at the fabric of his shirt. “Alright, let’s get you dressed. We’re gonna have a daddy-daughter day.”
Once Finn had Peyton dressed – in Giants merch, of course – he had her back in his arms and headed back to the living room so he could grab her stroller and a bag for anything she needed. After packing up some diapers, snacks and other necessities, they were finally ready to leave the apartment for the day. “It takes a while to get you ready, P. But still not as long as it takes for your Mommy,” he said with a laugh, pressing a kiss to her cheek before he got her strapped into her stroller. He smiled as she babbled happily, glad that she was in a good mood for the day ahead. It wasn’t often that he got to spend a whole day of one on one time with Peyton and he knew that he wanted to make it perfect even if it was something she might not remember.
The second he stepped out of the apartment building he noticed paparazzi standing across the street and he couldn’t help but sigh. While he had gotten used to the media attention and was good at ignoring them for the most part, they had been overwhelming since the Giants had made the playoffs. He knew that it would only get worse the closer they got to the Superbowl. “Look at them, P. Fucking assholes taking pictures of us,” he said in annoyance as he got her settled into the car he had called. “One day I’ll teach you to flip all these pieces of shit off and it’ll make for great pictures,” he said with a smile before he got into the car.
It didn’t take long to get to their destination and once he got Peyton out of the car and settled in her stroller he headed into the mall with her. “Let’s get you some toys. I’m thinking a little football. You’re almost one, it’s about time,” he said with a laugh as he looked down at his daughter. As he headed to the toy store he was relieved that he was only stopped a couple times, knowing that he really didn’t feel like stopping to take pictures every ten seconds when he just wanted to spend the day with his little girl.
”Dada! Up!” Peyton whined from her stroller as she looked up at him, her struggling to get out.
“Okay, relax, P. I’ll carry you,” he said with a soft laugh as he scooped her up into his arms. “I don’t know why we even bought a stroller when you just want me and your Mommy to carry you all the time.” Finn smiled as Peyton immediately clung to him, her tiny hands gripping at the fabric of his shirt as she leaned her head on his shoulder. When he spotted little footballs in an assortment of colors, he leaned down so she could look at them, grabbing one and holding it up in front of her. “You like this one, P? It’s pink. I’m sure your Mom would be happy with that,” he said with a laugh.
“No!” Peyton said, shaking her head as she smacked her hand against the ball.
“Okay, alright. Pink is out, that’s fine with me.”
He watched as she reached for one of the green footballs and he smiled softly at her before pressing a kiss to her cheek. “I like your taste, P. Who needs pink?”
After going through the rest of the store and buying Peyton more toys than she probably needed, he headed back out into the mall. Finn found himself going through a few stores in search of some birthday presents for Rachel but all he had bought for her so far was some lingerie from Victoria’s Secret – and he knew that was more of a present for him than her. “I don’t know what you get your Mommy for her birthday, P,” he breathed out before he walked into a jewelry store, hoping that he could find something for her here. Girls loved jewelry and he knew that Rachel was not an exception when it came to that. As he looked through the jewelry cases, Peyton immediately began pointing at one of the boxes and he looked at her curiously before glancing down. Engagement rings.
“Did she put you up to this?” he asked Peyton with a laugh before he adjusted her in his arms and looked down at the rings. Even looking at them freaked him out more than he liked to admit but he couldn’t bring his gaze away when he knew that this really was something he needed to start looking at. While for him marriage wasn’t a big deal, it was to Rachel. It was special to her and she was special to him so he knew that if she really wanted to get married that he would do it for her. He would do anything for her. “You want me to marry Mommy?” he asked Peyton before he pressed a kiss to her cheek.
“Mama!” Peyton giggled happily as she continued to attempt to grab one of the rings, getting frustrated by the glass that was in her way.
“Um, excuse me? Can I um – can I see that one?” Finn asked one of the women who was behind the counter, watching as she nodded before gently taking it out.
“Don’t tell me, you’re doing a Christmas proposal?” the woman asked as she looked at him excitedly.
“Oh uh – no, no. I’m just looking right now. I just want to know how much this one is? It just, I don’t know, it reminds me of my girlfriend and our daughter seems to like it,” he said with a soft laugh.
The woman nodded as she held out the ring for him and he nervously grabbed it in his hand before looking it over, making sure to hold it out of Peyton’s reach despite her protests. “This particular ring is a princess cut three carat diamond in the channel setting. It’s absolutely stunning and can be resized or customized to your liking. The starting price for this particular ring is twenty-five thousand.”
Finn almost dropped the ring the second the woman told him the price and he immediately handed it back to her as he looked at her in shock. “I’m sorry, did you mean twenty-five hundred?” he breathed out. How the fuck could something so tiny be so expensive?
“No, it’s twenty-five thousand. Diamonds are expensive, what can I say?” the woman said with a laugh as she placed the ring back inside of its display.
“Holy shit. That’s fucking crazy.” It wasn’t that he didn’t have more than enough money to buy a ring that expensive, he just couldn’t believe how much it was. “So, if I wanted to get my girl some beautiful ring, you’re telling me that I’m pretty much looking at buying a car?” he asked her, his question causing her to laugh softly.
“Pretty much. It’s crazy, I know, but that’s the business. There are smaller and less expensi –“
“No, I’m not going to go cheap on my girl. I can afford it, I just – I’m not buying that right now,” he said with a laugh. “Thanks though.”
Finn quickly began to head out of the store, sighing when he realized that he still didn’t have a birthday present for Rachel. “You had to point at the engagement rings, didn’t you? Now I have to come up with something else,” he said to Peyton with a small smile on his face.
After spending more time in the mall, Peyton quickly began to grow cranky since she needed a nap and Finn was right there with her since he was frustrated and unable to find anything that he wanted to get Rachel. So, after calling a car they headed home and once they were in the apartment, Finn put Peyton down for a nap before he called Michael.
“Dude, I need help,” he told his friend before he could even say hello, causing Michael to laugh softly.
“What’s up?”
“I looked at engagement rings today.”
“Wait – what? You looked at engagement rings today? Did you buy one?” Michael asked in shock.
“Yes, I looked at engagement rings. And no, I didn’t buy one. They’re crazy expensive and I’m not ready to propose, not yet. I took Peyton with me to the mall today to buy her some toys and look for a birthday present for Rachel. Next thing I know P is pointing at rings so I started looking at them and – fuck, this shit is freaking me the hell out.”
“Okay, calm down. You didn’t even buy a ring and you’re freaking out,” Michael said with a soft laugh.
“But I looked at a ring, Michael. I looked at one. I never fucking thought I would look at a ring! And now this girl has me looking at engagement rings and thinking about getting fucking married. I thought I wouldn’t get married until I was like forty! I’m twenty-three, Michael. I’m twenty-three and I’m looking at fucking engagement rings.”
“Wow, you really love Rachel.”
Finn paused for a moment and sighed before he ran his hand through his hair. “Of course I love her. I – I just can’t believe that this is real sometimes, you know? I mean,  I’m a dad, Michael. I’m a dad and I have a girlfriend who wants to marry me and god, we’re trying to have another baby. This is just all –“
“Wait, you’re trying to have another baby?” Michael asked him in surprise, cutting off his rant.
“I – fuck. Yeah, we are. Please don’t say anything to anyone. Rach wanted to keep it quiet for now.”
“You’re freaking out about getting married, something that you can easily end with a divorce and having a prenup but you’re trying to have another baby? What is wrong with you? Like mentally, where the fuck did the idea of marriage fuck you up so badly that a baby seems like a better, less committal idea.”
“I don’t know! I don’t know if maybe it’s because my mom marrying Burt royally fucked everything up with our relationship. But I know that wouldn’t happen for me and Rach. I – I don’t know why it freaks me out so much. I know I want a baby with her but the idea of getting married… it just, it scares me. What if we get married and everything changes, you know? We’re so good right now. We’re awesome parents and we want another baby. What if we get married and it doesn’t feel exciting anymore? O-Or we stop feeling like we do right now? I don’t want to stop feeling like I do right now.”
“Finn, look. That scares me too. You think all of that shit didn’t go through my head before I proposed to Mila? Of course it did. But that doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter what happened with your mom and Burt or what happens to other people who get married. Focus on your relationship. Because I know that me marrying Mila isn’t going to change anything but her last name.”
“Yeah, but you’ve been with Mila for three years. You know it’s not changing.”
“You have a kid. That’s usually a death sentence for some relationships and look at you and Rachel.”
Finn sighed as he looked down at his feet, his grip tightening on the phone for a moment.
“We’re just doing everything backwards, I guess. A-And maybe that’s better for us, I don’t know. But I’m still getting used to being in a relationship, you know? She’s been in serious relationships before. This is the first time I’ve ever even told a girl that I love her. I will marry her eventually – I will. I just, I don’t know, I’m still getting used to the fact that I’m dating someone.”
“Finn, you have to tell her that. You have to talk to her and be open with her otherwise she’s going to keep thinking that you’re pulling away or that you don’t want to get married.”
“I know, I know, you’re right.”
The sound of Peyton crying from her room immediately pulled his thoughts away from the phone call and he sighed for a moment before getting up from the couch. “Peyton’s crying. I have to go. I meant to call you to ask for advice on what to get Rach for her birthday so this conversation went off course,” he said with a laugh.
Michael laughed softly. “You think? You know Rachel better than anyone, you’ll know what to get her. I’ll see you tomorrow at practice.”
Finn ended the call before he got up from the couch and made his way into Peyton’s room, a smile on his face when he saw that she was standing in her crib, leaning against the side as she waited for him to let her out. “Hey, P. That wasn’t really a nap, you know. You were only in here for like fifteen minutes,” he said with a soft laugh as he scooped her up in his arms, smiling as she immediately calmed down. He loved knowing that he could soothe her, he loved knowing that she felt safe with him and loved him because he knew as a father that was the most important thing.
As he headed out into the living room, he moved to lay down on the couch with Peyton resting on his chest, a small smile on his face as she seemed more than content to lay against him. “Is this how you want to take your nap, P? You want to nap with me?”
Peyton looked up at him with tired eyes before she buried her head in the crook of his neck, her arms attempting to wrap around him tightly. “I love you, princess,” he whispered softly as he ran his hand through her short blonde hair and pressed a kiss to the top of her head. Finn knew that this was the only way he was going to get her to take her nap and he figured that he could use one as well after being out all day. “Maybe we’ll get lucky and Mommy will wake us up when she gets home,” he said before his eyes fluttered shut, holding Peyton tightly in his arms before he drifted off to sleep right along with her.
