I find it really comforting to learn more about venomous creatures in my area because it helps me get rid of the fear of them.
Could you make a post talking about venomous spiders in Texas?
well, all spiders in Texas are venomous except for the uloborids, since all spiders anywhere are venomous except for uloborids! I’m not going to talk about every spider in Texas since that would be way too many of them.
there’s very few that could actually hurt you though, since most are too small to pierce human skin. even the big ones like tarantulas and wolf spiders, besides being much easier to notice and avoid, are far more likely to run away when harassed than they are to bite defensively.

#1892 - Australomimetus sp. - Pirate Spider eggcase
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Found while I was strolling around The Spectacles for the Great Southern Bioblitz 2022, on the same branch as some Uloborid Venomless Spiders, and some Dewdrop Spiders that were kleptoparasitising the Uloborid’s hackled orb web. Both spiders will have bigger problems when these eggs hatch, because Mimetids are specialist predators of other spiders, strumming the silk to mimic ensnared prey or potential mates.
Of course that diet makes mating even more risky than it does for other spiders, and it’s not clear what they do to minimize the chance of sudden cannibalism. At least one genus has extremely long pedipalps, presumably so he can inseminate his mate from as far away as possible.

Featherlegged orbweaver, Uloborus glomosus, Uloboridae
This species belongs to the family Uloboridae, the only known spiders that do not possess venom glands. Instead, they rely on entirely on their web to catch prey. Most species of Uloborids are very small; the featherlegged orbweaver measures only 1/8″ - 1/4″.

No, they are not testicles! Let's just get that right out of the way. I mean, they're at the wrong end for a start. They are in fact the palps of a young Uloborid spider, possibly Philoponella congregaBALLis, no wait, I mean congregabillis. My mistake! Anyway, Uloborids are the only spiders without venom, and with palps like that who needs venom anyway? But in all seriousness... they basically are testicles, or more actually, penises (penii?). They are the 'copulatory organs' of male spiders, through which sperm (not produced in the palps) is transferred to the female. And thus concludes today's spidey sex education. Class dismissed 😂 ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• #im_arachnids #arthropod_perfection #ausgeo #beautiful_insects_japan #bns_macro #cnc_mcu #electric_macro #exclusive_world_macro #explore_macro #galeri_makro #insectguru #invert_macro #ip_insects #kings_insects #macro_brilliance #macro_captures #macro_freaks #macro_highlight #macro_perfection #macro_turkey #macro_vision #macroworld_tr #mta_macro #natgeo #onceupon_a_macro #raw_insects #thingsupclose #top_macro #turklikeben_macro #uwn_insecta https://www.instagram.com/p/By7bBsBhn6u/?igshid=ulq3io7t2005

This time of year, 6pm is a magical time in my condo complex. The light seems to dance around and tiny critters are out in abundance. This pretty web is home to a little uloborid spider. They are very special as they lack venom glands! Most spiders possess venom, although very few have venom strong enough to cause a reaction in humans or even dogs and cats. Uloborids however have evolved to simply crush prey with their silk! 🕸🕷🕸 #bugluv #spiders #spiderweb #nature
