FAQ

What is 5K by 5 May?

5K by 5 May is a fic fest where the goal is to write a fic of no more than 5,000 words and post it to AO3 on the 5th of May. Fic will be promoted on the fest Tumblr and included in the AO3 collection. We'll also have a Discord server for you to hang out in while the fest is in progress!

Does my fic have to be exactly 5,000 words?

Not exactly, no! While it is fun to shoot for a nice, round number, sometimes different word processing programs count differently, and sometimes there's a really neat sentence that you just can't bear to cut, or else there is nothing else you have to say. The minimum word count is 1,500. The maximum word count is 5,000.

That's right, there's a MAXIMUM WORD COUNT.

If you're one of those authors who set out to write a one shot and end up with a novel, THIS FEST IS FOR YOU. It will be painful. But fun! If you're an author who writes with all the speed of a glacier or you only get 23 minutes of free time a week and have an insecurity complex about people who blow past the word count minimum with ease, THIS FEST IS FOR YOU. You can be sitting pretty on your 3,567 words while the everyone else is crying about cutting down their fic from a bloated 8,271. The schadenfreude will be sweet. Or maybe you will be empathetic and helpful. Whatever.

What if I really can't get it under 5k/I thought it was under 5k but AO3 is showing 5,004?

You will be pilloried in the town square.

(Kidding! The fest does allow for an emergency word count of 5,500. That's 5.5k by 5/5. Fic that is between 5,000 and 5,500 words will be shamed with a sticker on the promo posts, however.)

One of the mods always ended up writing too much and this caused a lot of deadline panic and frustration with having to post un-polished work.

That sounds similar to the inspiration for Stabfest which is that the mods kept writing "Dean stabs Cas" in their plot outlines.

You can't just keep making fests and bangs to address your personal issues.

Do we come to YOUR house and criticize YOUR coping mechanisms?

Ugh. Fine. What are the content restrictions for 5K by 5 May?

As of right now the fic should be for Supernatural fandom. Other than that, there are no restrictions other than AO3 TOS, since that's where the fic is required to be posted. Please tag responsibly.

Is this a bang/will there be art?

Nope! This is a fic-only fest. There won't be any art claims. This means that you don't have to keep your work anonymous (although we do ask that you refrain from posting large excerpts prior to 5/5) and no stress about trying to find enough artists or worrying about coordinating with a partner (unless you have a co-author.)

Does that mean art isn't allowed? What if I or a friend want to make art for my fic?

Art is allowed! There just won't be a formal claims process and no expectation for partnering up or otherwise acquiring fanart for your fic. We do encourage you to create a banner for your fic because it looks nice on the promo posts, but it's not a requirement.

Can I submit multiple entries?

Yes, with restrictions. You can only submit up to a maximum of three entries, and your first entry must be complete before you submit your second, and your second must be complete before you submit your third. So, if you were going for the maximum three, then when everyone else is submitting one (1) rough draft on 4/4, you will be submitting two (2) final drafts for your first two entries and then you can submit the rough draft for your third.

Of course, you are free to continue tweaking all three up until posting on 5/5. The spirit of 5K by 5 May is to spend time polishing a one-shot, rather than churning out pages.

Are crossovers okay?

Sure! Honestly, the only reason the fest is restricted to SPN right now is because that's where the mods have community ties. If there's interest, we might open things up in the future.

What if I'm not able to post on May 5th because I'm not finished/I got sick/life happened?

Please reach out to the mods ASAP; we'd love to help you over the finish line. Sometimes that just won't happen, though. Because there isn't a partner involved in this fest the way there would be in a bang or reverse bang, there is no additional penalty for dropping out or failing the challenge. The mods will be sad, though. And, of course, if there is no fic posted on 5/5, then it will not be included on the masterpost or be given a promo post.

What if I really, really want to write a novella instead of 5,000 words?

If your fic does not qualify--if it doesn't have a word count between 1.5k and 5k and it's not posted on May 5th--then you won't get a promo post or be included in the masterlist or AO3 collection.

What if I post a fic of less than 5,000 words on 5/5, but then add chapters later?

Look, it's your fic, and you can do whatever you want. But that does kinda miss the point of the fest, doesn't it? If we find out your fic has ballooned after posting, we will remove you from the masterlist and AO3 collection.

What if I write a sequel to the fic rather than adding chapters?

That's fine! We're not gonna go scouring your AO3 profile for extras.

He keeps running into another hunter named Dean Winchester, who seems to be about as lonely as he is if he's willing to put up with those former facts long enough to help Cas unravel the mystery of who (or what) he really is.

For his part, Dean's still (not) dealing with Sam's departure to Stanford, and figures distracting himself with a bit of mystery and intrigue is as harmless as it gets, right? Right.

(THE fic I'm most into right now, been following this from the very start and it's AMAZING. Cas has agency and is making friends and S1 Dean is growing out of John's influence and is becoming a Person and the both of them first being friends then more. The slow burn as their relationship develops, SO GOOD. SO SO DAMN GOOD. *screams* Seriously one of the best spn fics I've read in a long, long time.)

Chaotic as HELL and I just love Azula here, she loves Zuko so much in her messed up way and Zuko loves her back in the exact same way lol. It's batshit and I am Here For This.)

Also, Kakashi is so Chaotic here this is my fave characterization of him, you can't change my mind. And Genma is a Good Boi who is Doing His Best, along with the Self-insert character who I LOVE SO MUCH, SHE'S FANTASTIC FNEIWOPAF. Sped past this fic in the speed of light, I could not stop reading!)(Honestly, read all of the author's fics, they're all really REALLY good!)

Without needing anyone to tell her, Sakura knew that talking to someone no-one else could see or hear would make her weird. It would draw the bad kind of attention to her, something people could make fun of her for.

She didn’t like being weird, but she did like the voice. Her inner voice was helpful and it was a part of her that had always been there. The idea of it not being there would have been so much weirder than anything else.

It was during her first year at the Academy that Sakura realised the voice was not in her head at all, but that it came from a cloudy shape floating next to her.

Ugh anon I’m sorry you have friends who don’t get it but you can’t even like get mad at them because unless you’re raised with this shit, there is really no way to understand the way we have to live our lives just to survive.

I have definitely been there, that was my plan too. My mom’s plan was to get me engaged at 23 and married before 25. And even though it made so indescribably unhappy, I was ready to sacrifice my life for the sake of my parents reputation. I literally remember surrounding myself with spn and shameless and all the other shows I watched thinking that my time was limited, that my life was good now to make up for all the suffering for the rest of it with a husband that I do not love who I will be forced to keep happy and have children with. All my cousins did it so why can’t I? I truly believed that the life I had, being emotionally and physically abused in my parents home was a “happy” life. Then suddenly, this girl on tumblr started paying more attention to me than anyone in my life ever had. She noticed every little thing and sent me anon messages when I was sad or upset or happy or anything I ever posted about. I had never in my life opened up to anyone, I had never allowed myself to be genuinely me anywhere outside of my blog. And for some reason, when Kari and I first started talking, I just didn’t want to do that anymore and I just decided to not put on a costume this one time. I have no idea why to this day because I wasn’t in love with her from the beginning and she liked someone else anyway so I have no idea why but I was myself with Kari and that’s when I realized HOW MUCH life actually has to offer. And that’s when it hit me how freaking unhappy I was. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life trying to survive abuse and once I realized that everything changed. I wanted to get away, I wanted out and most importantly I wanted to fight. Even if Kari and I did not start dating, I had already made up my mind to fight for me. That’s all I’m asking of you anon too, I know it all seems so bleak and never ending right now because that’s what you were raised to believed. You were raised to believe that there is only sadness and disappointment if you don’t follow the path your parents have paved for you but there is SO much love and happiness that life has to offer. And it does not necessarily have to come from finding a significant other for the rest of your life. You have so much to do and so many places to go and it should never be about only finding romantic love. It sucks because being desi (the western culture doesn’t help either) we’re conditioned into believing that to be true and basically that the whole point of life is just to fall in love and live happily ever after but that is never ever the end in real life and it should not be the goal. I want you to find a way to get to know yourself because that’s what I found with Kari, I finally learned who I am and that’s when I decided to fight for myself because I’m an amazing person and I deserve to be surrounded by people who can see that and support that. Love will come to you when it’s time and it may be romantic love but it could be something else completely and that’s also ok. But agreeing to a life that you don’t want for yourself tag your parents have decided for you, that’s just not an option and the fact that you sent me this message shows that you want to fight, you just need a reason to love yourself and be free after however many years of brainwashing and emotional manipulation you’ve made it through. Fife by @lipstickandwhiskey (Reader x Sam) - I loved this! It’s definitely realistic because I think the Winchesters would often think the police departments were dumb and/or lacking, and Sam’s reaction and lines at the very end made my Sam!girl heart beat a little faster. Great job!

Pretty Darn Nice by @lipstickandwhiskey (Reader x Sam) - Ahhh, this was so amazing! I love when people write Sam getting the comfort he needs (because I’m convinced he needs it and never gets it), so this made me smile. And to see that you wrote it and tagged me up at the top made me feel just as loved as both Sam and the reader felt in your story!

For the Best by @d-s-winchester (Reader x Dean) - You write Dean so well! The ending for this made me all happy inside, even though there were little tiny bits of angsty feelings sprinkled around throughout the fic. Great job!!! Please keep writing!

Imagine Cas Reciting Poetry to You When Your Mind is Troubled and You Can’t Sleep by @kaz2y5-imagines (Reader x Cas) - This made me so happy inside. Not only did you use the gifs of Misha so, so well (because those gifs are enough to make anyone happy), but your Cas just makes me feel so safe and happy!

The Guest of Honor by @revwinchester (Reader x Sam) - This was amazing and super fluffy! Thanks for tagging me, because I loved the overall idea of it and you wrote it so well on top of that. The reader’s personality compared to the atmosphere of the party and her family made me want to laugh, and Sam’s little freak-out about not being good enough for her was true to his character. Great job!

Locksmith by @mysupernaturalfics (Reader x Dean) - While I don’t read smut, I know that the second part of this includes it. If that’s something y’all read, I would recommend it because this part of the miniseries was AWESOME. All I can say is that I would definitely be locking myself out of things more often if I knew Dean was coming to my rescue. Everyone’s emotions in this were so easy to feel myself; you wrote it really well and I’m sure the second part is just as amazing!!

This Car (His Name is Riley) by @writer-picks-the-music (Reader x Dean) - This was so, so cute! I love dogs a lot, and this made me smile. Dean’s definitely a sucker for whatever would make the reader happy, so watching him interact with Riley at the end made my heart melt. Bonus points for having Sam with Riley, too!

She Can Hear You by @not-moose-one-shots (Reader x Sam) - I’m always so fascinated by fics including deaf characters, so this was awesome to read! You did a great job portraying the reader’s excitement at getting her hearing back, and all the comments from Sam were soooo cute.

Portrait by @just-another-busy-fangirl (Princess!Reader x Prince!Sam) - This was short and sweet, and I loved every word of it. It was absolutely adorable and I’ve always loved medieval AUs, so this was perfect! I’m so glad I found it!

Wet Paws by @trexrambling (Reader x Dean) - I don’t know why there are lots of dog one shots lately, but I am not complaining. This was so, so, so cute!! The puppy sounds paws-itively (hahahhaha) precious, and the beginning with Sam was so true to his character. This was fluffy from top to bottom and I adored it!!

Dive by @kaz2y5-imagines (Reader x Dean) - This was sooo incredibly romantic/cute, despite the little bits of angst due to Dean’s thoughts and pining. Nonetheless, I loved it! Listening to the song made it even better, too. (Also, I loved the bartender! He cracked me up.)

In-Between

Alone in the Woods by @whispersandwhiskerburn (No Pairing) - This was so ingenious! The concept was really weird when I read the description, but you wrote it so well and I just kept wanting to learn more about the world they were in! I also loved the incorporation of the song; it’s such a good song and one of my favorite songs from musicals. If you ever wrote a sequel or drabbles about this, I’d love to read them!

Unexpected Part 2 by @hanny-writes-spn (Reader x Sam) - I loved this! You wrote everything so, so well, and I could really feel everything that the characters were feeling. Sam would be such a great dad, ugh. I agree with the reader on that.

Dear Theodosia by @saxxxology (Reader x Sam) - I love your Sam writing, I can’t say that enough! The ending of this was perfect, and I loved every word of it. You somehow managed to make me want to listen to Hamilton, which I’ve never wanted before. Great job!

Imagine Getting a Call Out of the Blue From Sam and Dean Calling in a Favor by @kaz2y5-imagines (No Pairing) - This was great! The little things like Sam ignoring Dean and the fact that the reader kept commenting on Dean’s lack of tact made me smile.

I Wanna Take Care of You by @jotink78 (Reader x Dean) - It’s not common for me to read a lot of fics about readers with epilepsy because there aren’t a lot out there, so brownie points to you for writing one! It can be hard to write about things like this (I’ve tried several things myself), and I think you did a really great job! This was interesting to read and Dean’s reactions to everything were spot on. 

Shots Fired by @torn-and-frayed (Pharmacist!Reader x FBI Agent!Dean) - This was great! I loved how Dean was prepared for it all, and the ending fluffy parts made me all happy inside. I hate to hear that most of that stuff has happened to you, though!! It made me so frustrated because the customers were being dumb, I felt for the reader!!

Prison Break - Part 2 by @torn-and-frayed (Reader x Dean) - I loved this! The first part was amazing enough, but this was such a great way to end it! (If this is even the end; I wouldn’t be opposed to more parts.) I loved the fluff at the end, as well as how you showed them bonding when she was in isolation. The angst in the middle was also so, so well written!!

Taken (Part 12) by @writingbeautifulmen (Reader x Dean, Reader x Sam) - This series is so amazing, and this part was so beautifully written that I had to read it a few times just to take it all in. I loved how you showed both Sam and Dean’s different reactions to John’s death, plus how the reader interacted with them based on that! This was so, so good!!

Angst

Betrayed by @percywinchester27 (Reader x Sam) - This was heartbreaking! I loved it though, and I made sure that after I was caught up with the episodes I went back and read it. I love your writing and this was no exception to your wonderful-ness!

Easy Peasy by @lipstickandwhiskey (Reader x Dean) - I loved what you did with the drabble I submitted! This was such an original way to use it (it’s definitely not what I would’ve done), and I loved the way you had Sam acting as a mediator.

I love the way you’re writing how the reader is feeling and how she’s changing over time... It’s so crazy and it terrifies me as much as it makes me want to read more.

The New Princess by @curliesallovertheplace (Reader x Prince!Dean) - I love this series and I was so excited when I saw you’d posted a new part! It’s so exciting to see their relationship forming, and Dean cracks me up. He’s such a rebel prince and that makes me happy. I’m so glad you’ve kept all his little characteristic nuances in your writing; he’s adorable and charming and I love the way you write him!

If It Can Bleed by @imadeangirl-butimsamcurious (Reader x Dean) - This is such a cool idea! The reader’s character is amazing and I can’t wait to learn more about her personality/characteristics/abilities, as well as her past. Escape by @lipstickandwhiskey (Reader x Dean) - Oh. My. Goodness. I love this series so much! The whole ***spoilers*** psychic thing along with the warning signal for it makes me so curious about the reader, and I can’t wait to see how her and Dean’s relationship develops!!

Just Another Case by @whispersandwhiskerburn (FBI Agent!Reader x Mechanic!Dean) - The pairing itself got me interested in this, but now I can’t wait to read more! The reader’s characterization is amazing and feisty, and Dean is staying absolutely true to character. Plus, I’m a sucker for SamJess. This oughta be good!

Cry Wolf by @moonlitskinwalker (Sister!Reader) - This is such an amazing series!! I can’t wait for more parts, the cliffhangers are killing me! I hope it doesn’t get too angsty, but I won’t complain if it does. Your writing floors me every time, and I’m always excited when I see that you’ve updated!

The Winchester Triplets - “What if Dean thought he should be doing... The Talk?” by @littlegreenplasticsoldier (Dad!Dean) - This cracked. me. up. I loved it so much and I think I was crying because I was laughing so hard. This was amazing and I’m glad you wrote these little stories!

Hanged, Drawn, and Quartered by Foolscapper (on AO3) (Sam) - This was so, so good. It’s solely focused on what makes Sam who he is, and I loved the way that it explored that. It’s really unique and definitely something I’ve never seen before. If you’re a Sam!girl, especially one who likes angst, I would highly recommend this!

Beelzebub Has a Devil Put Aside for Me by @chestercbennington , @spnxbookworm , and @winchesterpooja (on AO3) (Sam) - This fic was also super unique and such a twisty mix of AU and canon! It incorporated the relationship between Lucifer and Sam about the apocalypse really well. If you like angst and are a Sam!girl, I’d recommend you read this one, too.

Apples by @jpadjackles (SamJess) - This was a little happy and a little sad. I love SamJess and I love the nostalgic way that you write how Sam thinks about it now, even if it does make me sad. Plus, the concept of him and his fancy shampoo just makes me smile. Great job, Bronwyn!
