some salarian families
ok i said i’d do this the other day and im procrastinating the shit outta hell week so like why not
note that the majority of these are oc and the rest are me taking canon family names and making shit up based on what scraps of personality we see in canon
i also lumped in smaller, less notable families with their bigger, more politically-powerful parent clans, while families that are notable in their own right despite their size or irrelevance were separated out into their own entries. e.g., family haziko is very small and unimportant so they’re grouped with clan vaehirn, while family gurji is notorious even outside of the union so they’re separate from their parent clan narra.
if u wanna use any of these urself just ask i guess?? some of them listed are personal ocs so i’d rather u not use those without permission but u can use the general concepts of em
Aeralan
Notable Members: Aeralan Jalix (dalatrass), Aeralan Esheel (chief ambassador)
Base of Operations: Aegohr, Nasurn
The founding clan of Aegohr, Clan Aeralan mostly keeps to itself. They are best known for quiet strength, choosing to let their actions speak for them rather than make what they consider to be blustery speeches of mostly exaggerated boasting. Still, they hold quite a lot of sway in the Union from their historical significance, and they know it. Commentators speculate that much of Aeralan’s attitude likely comes from their sense of security; they are one of very few clans to hold power for almost the entirety of their home’s history, rather than the bitter tug-of-wars seen on Sur’Kesh.
Gurji
Notable Members: Gurji Taeja (Spectre agent), Gurji Vox (planetary diplomat)
Base of Operations: Hurrai, Sur’Kesh
Formerly a family of nobodies, the Gurji family of Clan Narra rocketed to fame after the arrest and subsequent recruitment of Gurji Beelo for the Council’s newly-formed Special Tactics and Reconnaissance division. Unfortunately, this brought to light a problem the Union wasn’t fully aware of and suddenly wished they weren’t: the bloodline had a genetic predisposition for aggression and violence, traits highly undesirable in the salarians’ anti-confrontation culture. Beelo himself only compounded the issue, his storied adventures giving his family a reputation for being ruthless, single-minded, and nearly impossible to kill. A saying regarding the family states, “A Gurji doesn’t die, just takes a nap and wakes up pissed.” Several centuries and quite a few smear campaigns later, the dalatrasses have spread the word that the Gurjis are anarchist brutes and not to be trusted, and the family itself is going through a three-way schism: some members wish to prove themselves better than their reputation, some do all they can to distance themselves from it, and some wholeheartedly embrace it.
Linron
Notable Members: Linron Maelbin (dalatrass), Darthol Aehe (ambassador to the Council)
Base of Operations: Talat, Sur’Kesh
The current reigning bloodline of Sur’Kesh, Clan Linron has been locked in a bitter rivalry with Clan Narra for centuries. The most recent thing they were able to agree on was the development of the genophage, but they still argue over which of them pushed to uplift the krogan in the first place. (It was both, but neither will admit as much.) Linron considers itself to be “the voice of the Union,” considering its history as one of the founding clans. As such, it has generally conservative, “salarians first” policies. It has been many centuries since a Linron was made a councilor.
Narra
Notable Members: Narra Lazal (dalatrass)
Base of Operations: Udril, Sur’Kesh
Sur’Kesh’s other major power, Clan Narra is notoriously difficult to deal with. While more pro-alien than their counterpart clan, they are legendarily stubborn; their feud with Clan Linron runs so deep they haven’t so much as recognized the city of Talat as Sur’Kesh’s capital in centuries, and instead insist their own home city of Udril holds the honor. This obviously makes any necessary xenopolitical negotiations a minefield, so most governments choose instead to deal with Linron. This, of course, only makes Narra even more bitter and determined to knock Linron off its throne. Critics often scoff at Narra’s attempts to distance itself from its feared Gurji bloodline, pointing out that the Gurjis only take Narra’s attitude to its logical conclusion.
Sheoquol
Notable Members: Sheoquol Rinok (dalatrass), Sheoquol Selban (inventor)
Base of Operations: Inal, Arshorth
A common sentiment on the planet of Arshorth is “they may as well make Mannovai the planet,” due to the fame of its capital city and general obscurity of everything else. Clan Sheoquol works hard to change this, at least in the eyes of the Union, by shaping their city Inal into a haven for engineering and scientific progress. A clan mostly of inventors, Sheoquol keeps pace with its neighboring Clan Vaehirn by developing and patenting as many new ideas as it possibly can. While not politically important anywhere beyond Arshorth’s upper atmosphere, Sheoquol has struck up an amicable alliance with Vaehirn, so any concerns they may have will still hold significant weight due to Vaehirn’s Mannovai-based clout.
Taesal
Notable Members: Taesal Dujae (dalatrass), Waraji Valern (councilor)
Base of Operations: Jaëto, Uothwar
Most salarians outside Clan Taesal consider it to be the most liberal in the Union; after all, the current councilor is a Taesal, and he’s a male. This is only technically true. While certainly more liberal-leaning than its compatriots on the homeworld and other colonies, Taesal has a running undercurrent of traditionalism that fights these tendencies every step of the way. There are still many in the clan who consider Valern’s promotion to be either a plot by the dalatrasses or an attempt at pandering.
Vaehirn
Notable Members: Vaehirn Irajii (dalatrass), Haziko Sitrith (celebrity), Haziko Yujai (formerly future dalatrass; deceased) Iport Waedrok (legendary doctor)
Base of Operations: Mannovai, Arshorth
Despite their pro-galactic politics and genial attitude, Clan Vaehirn is most famous for its strong, historic connections to organized crime. Even their dalatrasses are well-trained in self-defense and more than capable of handling themselves without bodyguards; whether this is a precaution against the mob or an indicator of involvement is left up to how much the individual agrees with their policies. Hiding itself behind Mannovai’s reputation as an epicenter of salarian art and religion, Vaehirn’s reputation for questionable morals, shady dealings, and ruthless use of assassins is enough to give even the hyper-aggressive Gurjis pause.
