Hi, I saw your post about Jewish indigeneity and as a non-Jewish, non-indigenous person, have a genuine question that I hope you will take in good faith. At what point of conflict and violence do we say that being indigenous to a region does not actually confer land rights? I understand that having land stolen is a travesty and a part of genocide, and I don't mean to be dismissive. But at some level of conflict and violence, is it not healthier for individals to learn to love the place they are at, the people around them, and the new culture they can build together? I think there are ways to do that which are not assimilationist. And I think the ongoing suffering in war cannot be justified by mere land claims. I am presenting this to you hoping you can help me understand your view better, especially if you disagree with me. What am I missing? Thank you for considering my questions.
I'm gonna be honest: the fact that this is coming from a blank blog makes me far less likely to want to answer it, especially because I haven't been on tumblr as much lately and thus don't know if this is a copypasta ask.
Who are you? Have you read my pinned post? Have you read the many, many sources in it?
I am going to give you extremely truncated answers, but understand that you have a lot of reading to do that is not possible to summarize in an answer to a tumblr ask. (Edit: this got a lot longer than I expected, but I stand by my words that these are truncated, incomplete answers. You need to read several books to actually develop a reasonable understanding of this.)
At what point of conflict and violence do we say that being indigenous to a region does not actually confer land rights?
Never. What you are asking here conflates two separate concerns: (1) the rights of an indigenous group to the land they are indigenous to, and (2) the ethical responsibilities said indigenous group has towards other human beings, in particular those who also live on that land. People don't lose their indegeneity and thus their ties to the land by being bad people. "Indigenous" is not an indicator of moral purity or uprightness. It means that they have deep cultural, historical, and (often) religious roots in a particular land that cannot be severed without totally destroying the group as such.
Eretz Yisrael will always be the homeland of the Jewish people regardless of whether we have control over it or not, whether we have a sovereign nation there or not, whether we are permitted to live there or even visit there or not. All of our religious and cultural practices tie back to eretz Yisrael, even ones that have been adapted to the diaspora. Religiously observant Jews pray facing Jerusalem three times a day, our liturgy is infused with references to the land, the Temple in Jerusalem, the redemption (of the people to the land) and/or specific attributes of the land. Our sacred texts occur in and make constant reference to the land and our observance of the mitzvot and how that relates to the land. (A ton of the religious laws we are given are land-based because it developed as an agricultural religion, and a huge number of the rest are related to the Temple in Jerusalem.) We have three pilgrimage festivals that pre- forced diaspora, all Jews would make back to Jerusalem to make specific sacrifices. We still observe these festivals in ways adapted to the diaspora, but you need to understand that the essential condition of diasporic Jewry is one of constant longing to return to the land. We observe these things today to keep the knowledge alive so that someday, future generations of Jews can use that knowledge in eretz Yisrael. Jews are of that land and can never be severed from it without becoming something entirely different.
Now. Does that give us a right to act with total impunity? Absolutely not. We still have moral obligations to our fellow human beings that we have to observe no matter what. That is true of all peoples everywhere, indigenous or not.
But the idea that you can "punish" an indigenous group by severing their roots is to say that total cultural annihilation is a valid punishment ever, which is genocidal rhetoric.
I understand that having land stolen is a travesty and a part of genocide, and I don't mean to be dismissive.
You answered your own question here, don't you see? Reread what you wrote here, as many times as you need to, until you get it.
But at some level of conflict and violence, is it not healthier for individals to learn to love the place they are at, the people around them, and the new culture they can build together?
You need to read some Jewish history.
If you are asking this question about Israel, and in particular the Israel / Palestine conflict, you need to read more Jewish history.
"....to learn to love the place they are at" Jews in the diaspora tried this. Please read this list.
"...the people around them" Do you think that Jews were expelled, pogrommed, and genocided multiple times across numerous locations because we didn't "love the people around us" enough? For real? Read about the Kielce Pogrom and get back to me on that.
"...the new culture they can build together" Ah. I see. Yes this is the thing:
We don't fucking need a new culture. We have been fighting to practice the culture we already have in peace for thousands of years.
I think there are ways to do that which are not assimilationist.
Well. You're wrong. You are one in a long long long long long long long long long long long line of gentiles who think that "Jews can just..." and (1) you're wrong; read what the Nazis did to ethnic Jews who converted to Christianity, the history of "new Christians"/conversos/etc. but also even if that were guaranteed to work (2) why should we have to change our culture instead of other people not trying to kill us for it?
And I think the ongoing suffering in war cannot be justified by mere land claims.
This war is not about land claims though; not really. Hamas wants every Jew dead. That is why they started this war. They have promised a new October 7th every day until the whole land is entirely judenfrei. Of course there are reasonable Palestinians with legitimate policy objectives, but that's not who's driving this war, and the ones in Gaza who speak up about it tend to get abducted or have their families disappeared and are tortured until they escape, die, or are silenced.
Are there legitimate things to be discussed about Israel's approach in this war and/or in general? Sure. But this isn't "mere land claims." This is about the safety, lives, and self-determination of half the global Jewish population, the vast majority of whom are only there in the first place because they themselves or their parents/grandparents/great-grandparents fled (or were forcibly relocated) there as refugees of genocide. Israel is the only remaining place in the world for certain smaller Jewish sub-ethnicities. If Israel is destroyed, so much will be lost. And, we will be back to being subjects of the whims of hostile foreign powers who have proven again and again that they will just periodically expel or murder lots of us when it is politically useful for them to do so.
That is what is at stake for us.
The fact that you think that our connection to the land is "mere land claims" and not an existential part of our identity says volumes by itself, but the fact that you don't know what is actually at stake for us says even more. It tells me that you have a lot of reading to do.
What am I missing?
Empathy. History. Context.
Read People Love Dead Jews - I think it will help you understand more of these issues. There are other helpful sources in my pinned post too.

The sole inspiration of this theory is this post by @someprettyname.
Tumblr media
You know, one of the topics Kaneshiro-san hasn't talked about in the Manga yet is academic pressure on a student, and this topic perfectly suits Shidou out of all the characters in Blue Lock. He is like the perfect candidate to showcase a burnout student who had to put up with all the pressure their parents placed on them, and I have three reasons to believe in this theory:
-> Monologue
Tumblr media
All his monologues during the U-20 match has one common theme, "Leaving a proof of yourself for the world to remember you." And one common belief in a household with great academic pressure is that you are made to believe from a very young age that if you can't achieve something in your life, then you are completely worthless. These kind of parents think that being happy with one's life isn't enough, you need to and got to be something or do something big in your life.
One more thing that slipped through ALL of our eyes is that Shidou is actually a pretty smart person:
Tumblr media
Shidou was so quickly able to correctly judge Kunigami and Reo, and I think that's a pretty good testament for one's intelligence.
Of course, I do not believe that a grade can fully show a student's capabilities, but I do also believe that you need to have, at least, some kind of intelligence to score good grades. And considering all of this, I can place a safe bet that Shidou was some kind of scholar student and being a smart kid in an Asian household means having to carry lots of academic expectations!
-> Behaviour
Tumblr media
You don't even need to fully know about Shidou to understand that he is far away from a student who is considered ideal and that's the point I'm trying to make! He isn't an ideal student because he is tired of being one for so long!
Okay, to understand my point better, imagine this:
You are being forced to be at the top of your class, to be a good, well-mannered, well-behaved student. It's like a constant invisible rope of expectation tied around your neck that never goes away and it's eating you up inside, so what would you do?
Most likely: rebel.
And that's what Shidou is doing! He is aggressive, violent and foul-mouthed—everything that can NOT be found in a trait list of an ideal student. Also, dyeing your hair in bright colours has been a pretty common thing any student does in order to 'rebel'.
You getting me? Please say yes.
-> Favourite song
Tumblr media
His choice of music was the first thing that made me believe that Shidou is just being a rebel student. Hide, as stated by Wikipedia, was (or maybe is) considered as the icon for Japanese youth to rebel against the 'conformist' society of Japan. And Pink Spider song goes deeper than it appears—this and this beautifully explains about the above mentioned song.
Here are some few excerpts of the articles:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This song's meaning in Shidou's case can be interpreted in various ways, and I would love if you guys come up with your own interpretations.
For me, it's like Shidou felt trapped in whatever way he was living. He was made to feel that if he followed every rules, got good grades, behaved like an ideal student, then everything will be fine and will work in his way and that his elders really know the best for him and that he is just naïve. This type of living ended up suffocating him even more—he wanted to truly live—he bottled everything up and one day, he just snapped and that was when the Shidou Ryusei we know was born.
One more small and very personal reason for me to believe that he was a scholar student with too much academic pressure is that one of his favourite subjects is Art.
Speaking from personal experience, I've noticed that people who were forced to study and do well academically usually end up falling in love with making art.
I don't know how to explain it well, sorry.
That's it, I guess.
What do you guys think?

Tumblr media
Taeyong
Taeyong is just gonna sit in a corner of the room and patiently listen to everything you say. He honestly understands why you’re behaving like this, it would be predictable that you’d have a bad reaction upon being taken, right?
Taeyong is going to stay stone-cold and indifferent to your blow-up of rage, not even trying to stop you. Yet inside he’s gonna be a bit affected. He does hope with time you’ll learn to love and accept him. Maybe this was destiny testing his love for you. He won’t do anything to you simply cause the occasion doesn’t call for such a thing. Don’t get him wrong, he will punish you if you keep this up in the future, but for now, showing mercy could be a starting point for both of you.
“Go on, speak up whatever it’s on your mind. I won’t do anything, I promise. But remember my kindness in the future, will you?”
Tumblr media
Doyoung
Doyoung likes to think that he’s a calm and composed guy but as soon as you start spitting swearwords towards him, he’d quickly lose his patience. Doyoung would be quite irked at your unfortunate choice of words to the point that he’d leave you in that room, locked up and possibly also chained to the bed, without food or water for maybe 2 days maybe even more if you pissed him off too much. That time would serve for both you and him, especially him, to calm down. Doyoung has very little tolerance to that type of impolite behavior and as time goes by, his punishments would also get worse so you better tone down your insurgent side.
“Look, maybe we started off with the wrong foot but let’s change that, okay? Don’t act so crude for now on and I promise I'll be nice too.”
Tumblr media
Jaehyun
Jaehyun would keep his unfazed facade yet would be a little annoyed at your rude behavior. He didn’t go through all the trouble of kidnapping you just for you to cuss at him.
Jaehyun wouldn’t punish you this time and would even offer you the chance to curse at him all you want cause it’s the only time he’s gonna accept it since he did just kidnap you. Pour your heart out and curse him in every possible way cause this is a one-time offer and he expects you to behave properly for the rest of your life.
Jaehyun is a civilized man so naturally he expects the same posture from you, so don’t you dare to break his illusion. Next time you decide to call him a bad name, don’t do it because in the end you’re the one who’s gonna end up hurt.
“I’m gonna let this one slide because I know it’s all happening too fast for you. So go on, show me the worst you got. Take it all out, babe, cause I won't tolerate that type of words in the future.”
Tumblr media
Lucas
Would be really surprised at your sudden outburst of bad names. Lucas would be so caught by surprise that he’d let out an incredulous laugh. From all the scenarios he predicted, never once it crossed his mind that you - his little angel - would ever curse at him.
It would feel like an illusion or a bad dream so Lucas would choose to ignore it entirely. Cuss him all you want cause he’s not going to hear any of it. And he’s only going to speak to you when you stop with the name calling.
Until then, you’re just invisible to him. Lucas prefers to live in ignorance than to have you hating him (very ironic considering he did just kidnap you).
“I already told you I'm not gonna speak until you stop that. So, if you want something from me then you need to end this. Whatever this was.”
Tumblr media
Xiaojun
Astonished and hurt. These are the words that better describe him as soon as the words left your mouth. Xiaojun would be a loss at words for a few seconds, unable to ratiocinate when confronted with your actions. His heart would be torn at you thinking so low of him, it would make him really sensitive for a good while. Would probably shed a few tears and take some time apart from you to think it through and compose himself. Will attempt to think positively and that it’s just your reaction to the radical change of environment and not actual hate towards him, that you’re just a little confused, that things will get better in the future and more importantly, that you will get better in the future. Xiaojun wouldn’t punish you or anything, he’d just try to shrug it off and move on. Things would get better, Xiaojun is sure of that.
“Please, don’t say those awful words, I know you don’t actually mean them, right? You’re not like this, I know it, you’re better than this.”
Tumblr media
Jaemin
Jaemin might be young but he’s way more mature than he looks like. He probably wasn’t too admired by your harsh words, his only reaction being a tired sigh. Your reaction could be somewhat predictable although unpleasant. Jaemin wouldn't be content with you and he’d cut you off rather quickly by chaining you to the wall and gagging you so you can’t continue with your bratty attitude. And if you remain obstinate against him, then Jaemin would leave you chained and gagged for a whole day on your own, no food and no comfort either. He’d come back after a while to check whether you’re willing to tone it down or you still want to be a bad girl. It’s up to you, but the longer you fight him the longer you’ll have to stay chained and locked up. So, it’s your decision.
“How long are you gonna keep this up? Aren’t your wrists getting hurt? Aren’t you getting hungry? No? Okay, then. Make yourself comfortable cause you’re not getting out of here anytime soon.”
Tumblr media
Shotaro
Shotaro is a sensitive boy so he would be really hurt by your cruel words. Your attitude towards him would really disappoint him and worse, would make him scared of you. Not of you, of course, but of your bad mood towards him and the eventuality of you cursing even more at him. Shotaro was so eager to hear you call him sweet names but when he received the opposite, it made him a little wary of you and almost breaking his heart. He’d probably leave you to cool down for a while, waiting for you to “settle” around the house before attempting to speak to you again, with plenty of caution.
“H-Hey. How are you feeling today? Better than before, I hope.”
