Tyson Fury, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis were the best, but there have been bad heavyweight champions, from Bermane Stiverne, who felt the punching power of Deontay Wilder, to Buster Douglas, who was finished off by Evander Holyfield.
Tyson Fury, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis were the best, but there have been bad heavyweight champions, from Bermane Stiverne, who felt the punching power of Deontay Wilder, to Buster Douglas, who was finished off by Evander Holyfield.
Not all fighters can rule as kings of a division like the great Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Mike Tyson or Lennox Lewis did, but the following giants really failed at the ‘champion’ part of being a heavyweight champion. Boxing’s alphabetical title craze has given talkSPORT.com a few candidates to select the 10 worst, but there are some rules to impose first. Tyson dominated every heavyweight he…

Does that include the other Tyson whose name is etched deep in prize ring legend? Big Frank laughed to the point of bursting as he threw his head back,…

Fury v Wallin: Bloodied British fighter takes points victory over battling Swede

Fury v Wallin: Bloodied British fighter takes points victory over battling Swede
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fury struggled with deep cuts to his right eye from the third round
Tyson Fury battled to a rugged points win over Otto Wallin as he fought for over nine rounds with heavy cuts to maintain his unbeaten record in a dramatic bout in Las Vegas.
The 31-year-old Briton, a 1-25 favourite with bookmakers, was expected to walk through Sweden’s Wallin but found his cut at the mercy of repeated checks from the ringside doctor, prompting moments of stunned silence at the T-Mobile Arena.
A punch in the third round drew blood above Fury’s right eye and when officials began to show concern, he visibly showed urgency, switching from patient boxing to planting his feet in a bid to land heavy, destructive shots.
He did, with a barrage in the ninth forcing Wallin to sway before a hard right hand piled him into the ropes in the 11th as Fury came through the type of examination few expected with a unanimous 116-112 117-111 118-110 points win.
“It was a great fight, I got caught on the eye and that changed the fight,” said Fury. “For the majority I could not see out of the eye. Then there was a clash of heads and I got cut again.
“A good 12 rounds, he was tough. It’s all heart and determination if I can keep going I will do. He was 20-0, didn’t know how to lose but I was the better man.”
Wallin said: “I did everything I could, I tried my best and Tyson is a great champion. Nobody can question my heart or question that I’m a good fighter.”
5 Live Boxing with Costello and Bunce: Fury battles through cut to beat Wallin
Relive Fury’s points victory over Wallin in Las Vegas
Cut creates a man possessed
Fury is now unbeaten in 30 professional fights
A heavy shot from Wallin in the 12th offered one more threat at the end of a tussle which thrilled those in the arena. With Fury bloodied and grinding out shots, cries of “Tyson, Tyson, Tyson” poured down to ringside, dragging more from him.
Wallin, who lost for the first time in 21 outings, was seen as an easy night’s work on Fury’s route to a rematch with WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder but he admitted he tried to hit Fury’s cut “even more” and his come-forward tactics delivered a true scrap.
Had the bout been stopped because of the cut, Wallin would have landed a technical knockout win and with ringside medics checking the gash during the sixth and before the seventh round, Fury was nearing a crisis scenario.
Just as he did when he climbed from the canvas to force Wilder backwards in the final round of their December thriller, he fought fire with fire. His punches became menacing, his face filled with anger rather than poise and two huge right hands sent Wallin backwards in the seventh.
A hard hook on the ropes in the ninth began another onslaught, with Fury glaring into the eyes of his resilient rival on the bell like a man possessed.
Wallin’s trainer Joey Gamache clutched his towel in the 10th and the concern on his face made it appear he may draw an end to proceedings. His charge deserves immense credit in what was his first bout since the death of his father.
And Fury, too, deserves plaudits as he showed an orthodox stance, southpaw stance, hit and move tactics, and, ultimately, immense grit in his fifth bout since a 30-month spell out of the sport. Not for the first time in recent memory, he served up a compelling watch in testing circumstances.
A grand Mexican entrance
Fury made an understated entrance on Mexican Independence Day weekend
The downside for Fury is he will inevitably draw criticism for the fact only 8,249 of the 20,000 seats at the arena were filled.
Concerts featuring the likes of Calvin Harris and Drake on the strip may have played a role but Fury will probably care little as this was in many ways a bucket-list event for him on Mexican Independence Day weekend.
Mexico’s Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has taken this Las Vegas fight night in the last two years, while the likes of Oscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather have filled the coveted fixture in the past.
And Fury entered the ring in a style befitting an occasion, sporting a poncho featuring the Mexican flag, a sombrero and then boarding a parade float to travel ringside.
Those here could have been forgiven for thinking such an entrance may have fallen flat with a routine win and early on it felt like Fury was toying with his opponent before finding his range with a three-shot combination in the second round.
It looked like he was slipping into gear, only for Wallin to turn what Fury thought may have been a boxing exhibition into a up-close, blood-filled tussle.
Some may ask what Fury gets out of beating the likes of Wallin. The answer is money, further US profile and, crucially, the type of in-ring activity he simply did not have when, just six-months into his comeback, he faced Wilder last year.
When the cut heals, this will have further developed his engine and ring craft and ultimately done him no harm at all.
What now for Fury?
Before Fury left the ring, his white shorts now a light shade of red, he had already mentioned Wilder as his next opponent.
Both have repeatedly spoken of a rematch, which, if you listen to the Briton, is slated for 22 February.
That date looks a tall order given Wilder should have a fixture with Luis Ortiz in November and, as is the way in boxing, the rumour mill says he may have plans that do not include Fury.
Fury has said he would explore legal options if the American goes elsewhere and he has even spoken of fighting in December to keep sharpening his skill set in readiness.
Before the fight, speaking on a podcast with Mike Tyson, Tyson Fury said he would beat WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO champion Andy Ruiz with “one arm tied behind his back”
Promoter Bob Arum this week barked “he’s not fighting in December” as he wants to take any risk of a slip-up out of the equation and after tonight’s cut, that now looks hugely unlikely.
Wilder may feel tonight’s scare shows he can get at his rival if they meet again. Team Fury will undoubtedly think their man is in far better shape now than he was in their Los Angeles thriller.
This hard-earned win was a case of job done. As those in attendance spilled out of the arena and back on to the famous Las Vegas strip in search of good times, fans around the world will now hope all roads lead to an adventure with Wilder.
‘As weak as a kitten’ – reaction
Tyson’s father, John Fury, said he was “proud” of his son for “how he mauled his way through”, but also said changes needed to be made to the fighter’s preparation and team.
“It’s the worst I’ve seen from Tyson,” he told BT Sport Box Office. “He has to be honest and say things are not right. For a man to be in that condition after eight weeks camp it looked like he had nothing after round two.
“His strength and power went tonight, he was as weak as a kitten from the first round. At 18 stone 1, I’ve warned him and warned him. He is a 19-stone fighter.
“If I had my way, the lot [Tyson’s team] would be gone. If they keep that team that will be his career [gone].”
On the two cuts around the right eye, John Fury said: “An injury like that could finish a career, he might need surgery on that.”

Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury in FURIOUS Twitter spat: Could a fight be on the cards?
Tumblr media
Former heavyweight champion Fury claimed Joshua is “just a poor man’s Frank Bruno” as he posted a picture of the ex-WBC title holder on his social media account.
But current IBF king Joshua, who fights Wladmir Klitschko on April 29, responded: “Typical Tyson Fury always talking BS around fight time.
“Same offer as last time. Two ringside tickets, don't bring a plus one it's for your fat a**.”

Fury hit back by posting a picture of himself with his world title belts and said: “when you do this come back and talk BS, soppy b*******. You can't even carry my jock strap flex, you stay humble w*****. KO.”
Bruno, who won the WBC title in 1995 before losing it to Mike Tyson a year later, joined in the debate on Twitter.
He added: “I reckon you boys should just save it for the ring. Let the fists do the talking.”

Anthony Joshua wants to know when Tyson Fury will be back
Fury has not boxed since he beat Klitschko in November 2015.
The Manchester-born fighter was due to face the Ukrainian in a rematch but pulled out of the first date because of an injury before a failed drug test for cocaine ended the chance of the pair meeting again.
Klitschko then turned his attention to facing Fury’s fellow Brit Joshua and was due to face him in December before it got pushed back to April.
They will now clash in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium in what is set to be the richest fight ever staged in Britain.

“The hero and the coward both feel the same thing. But the hero uses his fear, projects it onto his opponent, while the coward runs. It’s the same thing, fear, but it’s what you do with it that matters.”
Cus D’amato
We’ve been forced to wait a very long time. Not since the early 70s, with fights like The Rumble in the Jungle, and The Thrilla in Manila, has heavyweight boxing been this entertaining.
The last golden era in the division occurred during the career of one man, Muhammad Ali. An era which saw Ali take on fighters like Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Ken Norton, Floyd Paterson and Larry Holmes, each of whom would have been good enough to dominate in any other era.
On Saturday, December 7th, Andy Ruiz will defend the heavyweight boxing titles he took from Anthony Joshua 6 months ago, in a rematch. Ruiz’s win was one of world championship boxing’s biggest upsets. Not since, 1990 and that night in Tokyo, when James ‘Buster’ Douglas knocked out a then undefeated, and what looked like an unbeatable, Mike Tyson. Ruiz’s win was a shock, there can be no doubt about that. Before the fight bookmakers had him at 9-1 against, ridiculous odds in a sport with only two competitors, and where one punch can end a fight. But those odds reflected the chance public opinion gave Ruiz when he defeated Joshua, at the beginning of June, in Madison Square Garden. The, Ruiz – Joshua rematch will formally kick-start a golden era in the heavyweight division, some might argue started already when Deontay Wilder fought a dramatic draw against Tyson Fury. There are, at the moment, five legitimate contenders for the title meaning that all of them will be less likely to cherry pick easy fights and forego a big payday. It really is a case of make hay while the sun shines, except in this case substitute hay for money, and sunshine for punching your opponent in the face.
Boxing Abroad
Heavyweight title fights have historically been held in the United States and on occasions in Europe, fights outside of these two locations are very uncommon. But holding one of sports biggest prizes in an out of the way, exotic location from which neither boxer originates is not new. Such fights do, somehow, capture the imagination as well as huge piles of cash. These locations have been decided purely for the financial benefits to the boxers and the potential for generating positive publicity for the hosts. In some instances this has seen the blending of sport and morally bankrupt ideologies, which for a time are forgotten until several weeks after the fights conclusion.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
January 22, 1973, The Sunshine Showdown, Kingston, Jamaica. When Foreman annihilated Frazier, knocking him down six times before scoring a technical knock out with one minute and twenty-five seconds of the second round still to go. Foreman achieved this despite going into the fight a 4-1 underdog.
October 30, 1974, The Rumble in the Jungle, Kinshasa, Zaire. Both boxers were paid $5 million. To put this into context, Joe Louis, world heavyweight champion from, 1937 to, 1949. Who made a record twenty-five consecutive defenses of his title, never made $5 million throughout his entire career.
October 1, 1975, The Thrilla in Manilla, maybe the most iconic boxing match of all time. Staged by president Marcos to divert attention away from the civil war that was being fought in the Philipines at that time.  Ali walking away with $9 million and Frazier netting $5 million. To give these figures some perspective, both Wilder and Ortiz were paid $4.5 million in disclosed purses for their second fight a couple of weeks ago, this does not include their shares of pay per view television,
February 11, 1990, A fight that was expected to be so one sided that nobody bothered to give it a name. What was certain is that nobody in America was willing to pay for the right to host Mike Tyson to destroy James “Buster” Douglas inside of three minutes. With now mythical odds of 42-1 against, Douglas achieved the impossible inside the Tokyo Dome, Japan. 42-1 against. When Foreman beat Frazier twenty-seven years earlier it was considered a shock with Foreman overcoming odds of 4-1. Tyson was paid $6 million, Douglas walked away undisputed heavyweight champion and $1.6 million richer.
April 21, 2001, Lamely given the moniker Thunder in Africa. Obviously rumble in the jungle was the beginning and end of any catchy rhyme and wordplay when it came to fighting in this continent. With   Rahman a 20-1 underdog, this was thought to be such a one-sided affair that no Las Vegas casino was willing to pay the amount South Africa was, to stage the fight, Rahman being paid $1.5 million, while Lewis made $7 million. In similar fashion to Buster Douglas, Rahman shook the boxing world, knocking out Lewis with a straight right driven through the sloppy guard of the champion in the fifth. Compare this fight to the Ali fights, nearly thirty years earlier and you appreciate how Ali captured the world’s imagination and generated  the extreme revenue necessary to justify his purse.
December 7, 2019 In the crazy cash sports era of today Joshua will earn at least $40 million, Ruiz will take away $9 million, and both will have an agreed cut of the pay per view revenue, details of which I haven’t been able to find. Needless to say, they’re both walking away rich men.
The history of heavyweight boxing in obscure locations is colorful and littered with upsets. Ruiz, Joshua promises to be a far closer fight with no heavy underdog. In fact it’s much in debate as to who the underdog is.
    Why Ruiz Will Win
As in the first fight, I expect to see Joshua touching cloth on multiple occasions in the rematch.
Styles are said to make fights, it might equally as well be said that styles break fighters. Ruiz’s style couldn’t be any more awkward for Joshua. On paper, and to the eye, Joshua would win every time, but Ruiz has the box of tricks to beat Joshua. Ruiz’s main strength is his hand speed and accuracy. What this crudely translates into is, Ruiz’s fists spending more time connecting with Joshua’s head and face. Ruiz’s movement is also deceptively good, and he has proven that he has durability having been knocked down by Joshua, then coming back to destroy him. Joshua’s strength will always give him the ‘puncher’s chance’,  but Ruiz is likely to throw and land more punches. Meanwhile Joshua hasn’t convinced when under pressure of a high volume puncher. AJ was floored four times by Ruiz, ans was knocked down once when he fought Klitschko. Ruiz’s style of throwing quick combinations is AJ’s Achilles heel.
It’s ironic to remember that it was Eddie Hearn who cursed the career of Joshua when he selected him as the replacement for Jarrell Miller after the latter had failed multiple drug tests. Ruiz had only one month to prepare for the first fight, but had fought at the end of April, meaning he was already conditioned. But that should have counted for little when it came to fighting the multi titled world champion and former Olympic gold medalist. Few gave Ruiz any chance, including the bookmakers who were offering 25/1 against Ruiz winning by stoppage. To their credit, the Irish newspaper Independent.ie considered Ruiz to be more dangerous than the  originally intended opponent, Jarrell Miller.
What AJ has in size and strength, he lacks in speed and skill. That’s not to say Joshua is slow and without talent, it’s just that up until now it’s been his size and strength that have been most telling in the fights he has won, Ruiz has the skill set to neutralize Joshua’s attributes.
One of the more amusing things about the fighters is that they have both been criticised for their physiques. In the past, Andy’s figure has been on the adipose, rotund end of the conditioning spectrum. Joshua meanwhile has been criticised for being over conditioned. AJ has some glaring similarities to Frank Bruno, he carries too much muscle bulk which ultimately makes him powerful, but slow. It’s been said that Joshua is looking to address this matter, but how quickly and how successfully he can reshape his physique is a question that remains to be answered.
While it looks impressive, too much muscle slows a boxer down
pkt5282-394323 FRANK BRUNO BOXER It was too much to expect the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. This is heavyweight boxing for the big bucks after all. But when the manager of Lennox Lewis said there waws absolutely nothing bad aboiut Frank Bruno’s performance, at least he had the good grace to do so with a smile and ask: ‘Is my nose growing?’
It’s difficult not to support Ruiz, and I’m British. Ruiz is only getting 25% of the purse, and despite cutting weight  still bares a striking resemblance to British comic Johnny Vegas, a man whose act centres on him being drunk and unhealthy, but who doesn’t love Johnny Vegas?
They do actully look like each other.
It’s not just that they’re both fat.
In the future, out of Ruiz, Fury, Usyk and Wilder, I can only see Joshua beating Wilder. The other three have far higher boxing IQ’s, far better movement and hand speed. It’s the hand speed, combined with questionable durability that makes me believe that Joshua would succumb to any of , Fury, Ruiz or Uszyk.
Twenty-twenty, might be a format of cash fueled cricket, but it will also be remembered as the year of the mega fights in heavyweight boxing. The year that should see the Fury-Wilder rematch, Uszyk fighting one of these four, and Wilder fighting Joshua or Ruiz. Be cause the division has five huge talents it’s difficult to see how these fights can be avoided, and the huge pay per view revenue any combination of these fights would make should be too tempting to resist. Twenty twenty is the year that will stay long in the memory of boxing fans around the world. And my prediction as to who will be king of the hill,
Usyk
The talent of Oleksander Usyk will ensure that the heavyweight gold rush of twenty-twenty will sustain itself for a few more years, with any combination of huge fights. The countries that these fights end up being hosted in, and for what cause, remains the most difficult thing to predict.
Ruiz Vs. Joshua – A Gold Rush in a New A Golden Era of Heavyweight Boxing  “The hero and the coward both feel the same thing. But the hero uses his fear, projects it onto his opponent, while the coward runs.

Daniel Dubois aims to put British heavyweight title back in limelight
Daniel Dubois competing for the British heavyweight title on Saturday night
Dubois, 21, fights Nathan Gorman in the 02 Arena in his home town, Greenwich
]
By By: Jeff Powell For Mailonline
Published: 22 : 55 BST, July 10, 2019 | Daniel Dubois soon wants to rule over the heavyweight world, but about the way he wants to put the national championship back on its former pedestal.
& # 39; The British heavyweight title is a big deal for me & # 39 ;, says the devastating clockmaker who fights the also-undefeated Nathan Gorman for that empty crown on his Greenwich Peninsula at tonight's home base Saturday .

He continues to recite the names of such British heavyweight champions as Lennox Lewis, Frank Bruno, Herbie Hyde, Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury who went on to win world titles. lots of fights on YouTube, & # 39; says 21-year-old Dubois. & # 39; Usually the best heavyweights that have preceded me. I'm not sure I will have fun, but I don't know how to do it. "
He is particularly grateful to Lewis and says: & Lennox has spent time with me and has given advice that will be useful if I find myself in the big situation."
Dubois is by nature not the most talkative talker and he is notoriously silent during the battle week. Not out of fear, he explains: & I focus on what matters. I go into every detail of the fight with the people around me in the gym and my dad – the focus, the strategy, the approach.
& # 39; This is my person. This is the only purpose of my life and nothing should distract me or stand in my way. I put everything aside to get the job done. & # 39;
That's right, even when you talk to his family at home. He says: & # 39; I enjoy talking to my six year old brother. He likes boxing and I like to listen to what he has to say.

& # 39; That is a learning curve for me & # 39 ;, he says. & # 39; But I understand that it is part of the job and I am now more relaxed with it. & # 39;
He proves as much by smiling as he says: & # 39; It's easier to chat around with your reporters than to be in the ring for a long, hard slog. & # 39;
Not that Dubois had to undergo much of it.
That throws him in the 02 Arena as the puncher against Gorman's boxer, although the Nantwich traveler contains 11 KO's in his 16
