I know what hyperfixations are, I have ADHD. I get that it can be difficult to pull away from media that is problematic.
My thoughts for you are as follows- (because I wanna be reasonable here and the original post was admittedly very angry.)
-The comparison to the lightbulb is invalid. The lightbulb was an invention that innovated the industry and helped households across the world, bringing light. We see them as necessities. A book series is not necissary for living.
-Think about what parts of the media you enjoy. You can likely fill this with other media. I know how hyperfixations work, like I said. We have ADHD. It can be hard, but it's possible. Try to pull away from the problematic stuff and fill the void with something else. (Please read my entire argument here. I'm not saying you can't read a book.)
-It is indeed a book series. A book series that has many, many problematic ideals laced in (racism, anti-semitism, pro-slavery, to name a few). It isn't in the form of a villain that has these ideals, because that would be different (villains are bad, in stories and are given qualities as such to help the audience understand the hero's motives). This is a book series that poses anti-semitic and racist views as casual and common. (I recall a post about Hagrid calling the Goblins beasts, and how they can do magic but aren't allowed wands- Hagrid, who is the kind of person who would give any creature a chance, from what I recall?) These views are what make the source material problematic. And like it or not, people subconsciously take in things like this. Have you seen other art of fictional beings like goblins being depicted in ways similar to Harry Potter? Of course! (Not saying all depictions of goblins are bad, just saying that her books are highly marketed and therefore her fantasy world has become a staple in media, even parody and such.)
Let me also say:
There is nothing wrong with taking in media when you acknowledge its faults.
But this can co-exist with:
Stop buying into the media, stop giving the media money, stop viewing the media on platforms that give them money.
By giving her money, you are supporting her views.
Whether you want to read a book is on you, if you already own the book no one can tell you what to do, take in the media in all of its racist bullshit whatever, if you can look past that that's on you.
What this post is calling out is the fact that people KEEP. GIVING. HER. MONEY.
I'm not saying change your hyperfixations (and I gave an alternative there...) Like, listen, I've been here. I used to love Attack on Titan. And then I learned that the media was created by a japanese nationalist, and that those ideals were spread throughout the media. I did not want that plaguing my brain, I did not want to support the media any longer. That's my choice. You have a choice, too.
Either keep buying into the franchise and giving money to JKR to support her views.
Or stop buying into the franchise, and stop giving money to JKR.
It's that simple.
not to be this person but
why the fuck is it so hard for people to just stop taking in harry potter media?
do you just hate trans kids? do you just want people to die? do you not care about the antisemitic propaganda?
saying that you don’t endorse these things and then continuing to give the media attention/clicks/views (MONEY) means you’re giving money to a cause that supports those things.
If someone opened a shop and sold something you like and then you find out oh this guy is a nazi he’s giving his money to nazi groups and white supremacist groups- and then you keep giving him money?? you’re still handing a nazi money???
You are literally standing there giving money to a nazi saying ‘but i don’t support his actions’
What happened to ‘You’re allowed to judge someone’s views based on where they put their money’ ? Because the second that applied to you, you played it off and started making excuses
come the FUCK at me, potterheads i want to know what your bullshit excuses are because i can combat every single one:
You’re giving money and attention to someone who wants kids to die and has the power to do so because of the money you give her.
#i hope that this is reasonable and doesn't come off as angry.#but if you are using ADHD/autism to excuse continuing to give JKR money then we're at a hard disagreement.#ty for responding tho like in earnest i do like reading other people's thoughts
