i am begging for a rant on the worst fnv takes u've seen if u wanna! if not its np!!

ive seen so many … my least favorite are legion fans or joshua graham fans who love him and think hes reformed somehow even though its clear hes literally still an awful person in honest hearts like . even if he wasnt still murderous and using religion to excuse it hes still a mormon missionary who came to zion partially because of spreading christianity to a group of native coded characters 😐 . also i hate ncr fans who nut for american government-lite and think independent new vegas is evil lawless anarchy . also also half the people who ever mention arcade gannon should never speak ever again idc if u like him bc hes gay if u let the legion take him or excuse the ncr for their treatment of him because of his parents past he cant control i do not want you near him . uhhh honestly so many more i hate people who like honest hearts in general . uhhhh idk also people who think ulysses is boring are just wrong actually … also back to arcade if u ship him with boone or vulpes u just like to put two random incompatible men together bc u think it’s hot

First impression: the first time i saw benny was when i was installing mods with my friend tony and i stumble upon the bi benny mod and i started joking like ohhhhhh haha. what if i installed this it'd be so funny and i remember that he immediately knew i wasnt joking and 100% srs

Impression now: unironically i love this guy so much hes so much funny and an absolute delight. im fine with him shooting me in the head because we get to have the most hilarious sex later

Favorite moment: okay. two part answer. the funny answer would be entire build up to <have sex with benny>. his reaction is so fucking funny. but genuine answer is the note he leaves you because i think thats the point when i genuinely got really enamored with him because the line of how he wants to come back and date you and that he wouldnt miss it for all the caps in the worlds make me wants to sob scream and punch the wall at the same time

Idea for a story:

im not gonna act like i havent already been writing a story about benny because its literally abt benny and ethans relationship and its been something ive been working on and off since i first got into fnv which is like. almost a year now. but also i dont know if ill ever get brave enough to show my writing especially because i dont think i actually write benny accurately and i always get bothered when things are accurate but heres my two favorite momence from the both of them that arent remotely related

Unpopular opinion: hmmm. i dont think i really have any. i just think hes fruity as fuck.

Favorite relationship: i think i really like couriers/benny in general not even speaking just for ethan but ive seen a lot of good relationships with the two but also arcade/benny is really funny as well

Favorite headcanon: i really really really love the I ACCIDENTLY POSTED THIS BEFORE I FINISHED WRITING i love mazatland indigenous benny so much because i think so often about the comic and the entire background behind it and sincerely it lives so much in my head

The Dollars Trilogy and/or FNV :D

Favorite character this is a really close tossup between two companion characters- Veronica Santangelo, an optimistic tank of a lesbian; and Arcade Gannon, a tired gay medical researcher. slowly unraveling their backstories (and it takes a minute! both of them have a lot of thing you have to do before unlocking their loyalty quests!) and hearing their opinions on this beautiful hellscape of a desert and the people who live there is really fun. for a fallout game, really well-written. take notes, todd

Second favorite character oh shit well i answered this 

Least favorite character there are so many hateable men in this game. caesar, the head of a slave empire; house, who is literally elon musk but with a walt disney voice; whoever the fuck the head of the New California Republic is he’s irritating as shit; Father Elijah who betrayed his protege to one of the worst fates i can imagine for myself, LUCKILY you can kill all these men in the bloodiest manner you please and get a cannibalism achievement if you also so please

The character I’m most like there’s a minor character Emily Ortal who asks you to bug a computer network and then has absolutely no effect on the rest of the game. not only could i convincingly cosplay her, i am also familiar with Scientific Regret

Favorite pairing christine royce/veronica santangelo, and they’re canon in my heart AND confirmed outside the game by one of the writers. 

Least favorite pairing idk i have one??? there aren’t a ton of canonical pairings that i can think of off the top of my head? benny gecko (the man who shoots the player in the head)/power maybe? that man should not be running anything bigger than a hotel

Favorite moment watching Veronica comes to several realizations is heartbreaking, stepping into the Lucky 38 casino/player HQ for the first time, starting up an old solar power plant is very fun even though u should Not be on the maintenance deck during the day when that thing is running, literally everything that happens in the DLC Old World Blues, the final confrontation in Lonesome Road. UGH what a good game

Rating out of 10 solid 8/10: there’s a lot to critique but it is explicitly gay and lefty and lets me run around the desert shooting fascists with a dog and a lesbian, and no other game lets me do that

because i read a lot of fallout fanfiction in the last five months and i want to justify it

i get into the nitty gritty of Why I Like These Fics So Much because i love explaining things, so i’m shoving this under a cut!

Honesty, Industry, Prudence by meanoldauthor

Slaves of Caesar's Legion are all but invisible. Most use it to avoid punishment, but the clever might turn it to their own gain. A rare few, through a roll of fate, might gain unexpected influence on the Legion itself.

Caesar's Priestesses are the only women held in any regard among the Legion, and even then only as caretakers and nurses to children. A mysterious and select group, their influence seems to go no further than the Temple doors. However, one lucky slave sees beyond the safety and softness of their work--and into a far deeper potential.

a wholly self-contained, character-driven story that takes us through life in the Legion through a woman’s eyes, and also one of the first FNV fics i ever read that captured my interest. i love worldbuilding and i super love when fics explore and build upon established canon and give these worlds their own space to breathe, to take a peek behind the curtain. this fic builds upon the Legion’s lore excellently, weaving a rich tapestry that makes the setting come alive. Aquilina is also a very compelling character with strong motivations, and keeping up with her life was always super interesting.

Qui Sumus by ghostofshe

A deceiver, two frumentarii, and a Courier, betting on the future of the Legion with a stack of mismatched cards and stolen caps.

4 chapters and yet to be finished but i love love love it. the Courier gets replaced by his twin sister and it’s already an intriguing premise but the writing for the characters really sold this fic for me. if you can’t tell, i am a sucker for character-driven stories, but that’s really because the characters are the backbone of a good story, for me - and the ones here are super strong and distinct and are really fun to watch. Cato and Nox and Canus are great, but i also love the depiction of Vulpes Inculta here - here’s a version of him that’s around someone familiar, which is super jarring usually, but what we’ve seen of him so far works for the character in my opinion.

the Courier’s exploits told from her family’s point of view - a concept that’s been done before, but this one pulls it off the best, in my opinion. short but bittersweet! all the details about Johanna’s life and her relationship with her family come forward, and her motivations for the events of FNV, which take place off-screen, are at the forefront.

if i am a sucker for anything, it’s character studies, and this was an excellent character study for House. it’s under 700 words but it perfectly encapsulates House’s motivations and feelings so well that it made a huge impression on me, and made me think about how i frame the motivations of my own characters.

this fic is SO CUTE. it’s SO GOOD. minor FNV characters really got to shine in this fic, it has 6 chapters so far and i love every single one of them. it does a fantastic job of setting up the budding relationship between its main pair, their chemistry is so great. they’re finding that they have more in common with each other than they thought - but they also start to appreciate their differences, too. and it’s not just about o’hanrahan & razz, but poindexter and mags have integral roles, too, and their relationship as a whole unit is explored as well. i love how their friendships are slowly but surely developing together.

don’t you love it when characters are kicked down a peg or two or ten? ‘cause i sure do, and this fic hits Benny hard. Benny Gecko, shitty garbage man, has to take care of a smart-mouthed little kid, and it’s beautiful and also amazing. he’s still so obviously Benny, he can smooth-talk his way out of getting killed by raiders but he’s also always looking around every corner for anything that might kick him in the gut or stab him in the neck, and it’s just amplified when he’s in a situation where he has to look out for something other than himself. they got his character down cold and the situation they put him in is a great test of that character. plus, the kid is super funny and a great character in their own right, and i love their interactions! they play off each other super well!

first off, THIS COURIER. WHAT A CHARACTER. seeing this Courier that is just a force of nature is so great, and my favorite kind of Courier if i’m being completely honest. just reading the other NPCs try to figure out how this Courier even works is always entertaining. and then there’s his relationship with Joshua Graham, which feels like such a cataclysmic disaster yet feels very very right. this fic has maybe one of my most favorite depictions of Joshua Graham ever.

In the year 2299, over a decade and a half since the death of Caesar and the fall of the Legion, we’ve followed two reporters, Delilah Wells of Radio New Vegas and Carlos Rendón of the New Vegas Times, as they’ve come together in the capital city of the Mormon nation of New Deseret to uncover the mystery behind a grave anonymous tip they’ve been given–is Vulpes Inculta, the infamous war criminal said to have been slain in 2282, still alive and free in the Holy City of New Zion? And if so, what sort of danger could he pose, and can he be brought to justice for his heinous crimes? Join us now as the trail goes hot, and the mystery deepens…

now this list is NOT in any particular order BUT... this is the Best fanfic i have ever read this year, bar none. it’s at 2 chapters so far, but don’t be fooled: it’s an epistolary whodunit with loads of journal entries, audio recordings, letters, transcripts, and more to pore through and discover. what i can say here, i already said in the comments for chapter 2:

Words cannot grasp how much I love this fic, but by Jove, I'll try. It's SO GOOD. And wonderfully written and presented, holy crap. It's plain to see how much effort went into making everything look, and it adds so much to the characters and setting: examples that stick out to me are the pristine, color-printed recruitment pamphlets of Brotherhood of Steel; Delilah's photographs; Arthur Young's ADORABLE stationary; the sketches in Carlos' notepad; the New Vegas telegraphs... I'll be here all day if I list 'em all. And those are just the VISUAL element...

The audio recordings have mismatched volume levels for each actor and are at times hard to make out, which is explained in-verse by having the recordings be from a wire - not saying it's bad, in fact I think it gives the recordings lots of personality. And the voice talents themselves do a great job! Delilah has a nice, clear voice for radio and Carlos is mumbly with a sort of flat voice, which I think suits him perfectly.

The writing and worldbuilding is just stellar, too. Delilah and Carlos KNOW what they're doing, and I love learning more about them as more and more details begin to show themselves, and it's all very seamlessly integrated with the main story. Trying to figure out the mystery of Vulpes Inculta along with them never feels boring and I am on the edge of my seat wondering how things are going to develop aaaaahhhhh oh my GOD.

In short, I love this fic and I think anyone who loves Fallout should read it. Thanks!

A sample:

Six remembered three things from her old life a week after waking up. One, half of the plot of the last romance novel she read, but not the title or the author or the cover. Two, a news brief about a spectacularly dumb grift that had finally blown up in two outlaws’ faces somewhere on the Big Circle. Three, men and other people in general were okay but girls, specifically this girl in front of her, a stocky brunette with a power fist and a power stance, were where it’s at. 

Maybe it was the rads from rescuing Raul off Black Mountain. Maybe it was shoving her battered body across a desert- she was fairly certain she used to be able to walk faster. Maybe it was shock settling in from almost dying, flat on her back on the desert floor in sight of New Vegas. Maybe it was something deep in her bones, from before she got shot. Whatever combination of reasons it was didn’t matter. Veronica, terrible hood splattered with bits of a centurion’s face, was the most beautiful person she’d ever seen.

Happy STS! Tell me about when you started shipping the power ladies OT3 in fnv? Was there a particular scene with Veronica and Christine? What does Six bring to their dynamic?

tomorrow i will be publishing an installation about how Six met Christine, so this is very timely indeed.

this feels serious enough to warrant proper capitalization and punctuation, also it’s very long and there is nothing i hate more than reading an essay in my usual stream of consciousness style

Veronica is far and away my favorite companion in the game. She’s a small, funny, punchy lesbian. She’s got a really interesting arc where, as you discover more Old World tech sites and come across different groups with her as a companion, she’s compiling evidence to get the Brotherhood of Steel to change their xenophobic ways and actually help the Mojave- she’s smart enough to realize that their closed membership is going to kill them off in a generation or two, and that hiding in a bunker underground while hoarding power armor and energy weapons isn’t actually helping anything. They’ve got incredible resources, but no good cause other than their own survival. 

Like Arcade, she’s really idealistic- she sees people suffering or in trouble and wants to help, but she’s also capable of looking at the big picture and trying to fix systemic issues. Actually convincing the Brotherhood to change their ways is impossible, but the better ending for Veronica is when she leaves the Brotherhood as opposed to staying and trying to fix things from the inside as a low-ranking member. 

In my original playthrough, SEVERAL laptops ago, I went from House’s side (even though I hated him I thought he had the skills and the power to successfully defeat the Legion and hold back the NCR) to flipping Independent in five seconds because he wanted me to wipe out the Brotherhood and wouldn’t take no for an answer. If anyone should get that choice, it’s Christine and Veronica who have been so deeply hurt by that shitty collection of scared old men in a bunker. But the game doesn’t let you do that. So I turned around, hacked a terminal, killed a bunch of robots, and murdered House.

And then, stalling for time because I hate finishing things, I played through the Dad Money DLC where you meet Christine and was incandescently angry about how you can’t bring Christine back or reassure her that Veronica is okay when they are SO OBVIOUSLY LOVERS.

Given how small the Brotherhood is as an organization, and given these two conversations, fans have been speculating forever they were lovers, but it wasn’t confirmed until November last year. 

I think this incarnation of Six meshes really well with them, and together they’re a balanced party of melee, sniper, and midrange weapons. I want them to be safe(r) and happy together, dammit. I will fill this ship tag on Ao3 all by my damn self. 

Six and Veronica were a genuine battle couple for most of their time before the Second Battle for Hoover Dam- they’ve watched each others’ backs and gotten in and out of a lot of shit together. Six and Christine did almost the same thing except highly concentrated and much more stressful. This is a trio of people who trust each other, because they’ve saved each other so many times.  

Six has access to power (not just political power, but firepower and a small army of robots and actual electric power), two pre-War casinos, and House’s old manufacturing warehouses in the city. All of this is like catnip to Veronica and Christine. The Brotherhood’s whole deal is finding tech and keeping it safe, but now they have nobody to answer to except when to come home to Six and they can play with all this tech and make the city better. Six is less technically minded than both of them, she didn’t get basically an associates in three different fields of engineering, but it does make her very happy to see them happy as clams, elbow deep in scrap. 

I dunno I like a good wlw powerhouse trio.
