gonna take a jab at this, but with esperanto bc i like conlangs

Ace - "Aso", basically just a direct translation of his codename into esperanto

Snake - "Dumeto", the last name of a british philosopher (Michael Dummett, be aware that i did not do any research on him) which begins with the word for two "du", since his japanese codename "Nils" took inspiration from danish physicist Niels Bohr and begun with the word for two "ni"

Santa - "Sanktulo", literally means "saint" from "Saint Nicholas", a name for santa claus. also begins with "san" so he can pull the "Any of you chumps know Japanese?"

Clover - "Primola", behind the name wasnt giving me any results so i went for just making up a reasonable name. the word for clover "trifolio" was off the table, so i went with the word for primrose with the -o changed to an -a, from the crownleaf evening primrose, which has four petals. it also sounds like a reasonable name (well, as reasonable as can be with conlangs)

Junpei - "Ĝunpejo", i dont even have to explain (additionally there is "Mano" which literally means "hand")

June - "Junio", the word for june in esperanto

Seven - "Sepo", literally just the word for seven with the -o suffix at the end

Lotus - "Nimfea", to break the line of direct translations and also to avoid being really Boring™️ (lotus is "lotuso" in esperanto), lotus' codename is the word for "water lily" just with the -o changed to an -a

The Ninth Man - "La Naŭa Viro", "the ninth man" in esperanto

Junpei and the Ninth Man are optional since they never got a code name.

I’ll go with Arabic!

Ace: “وحيد” / “Wahid”. Common Arabic male name, means ‘sole’, ‘unique’, or ‘lonely’, and uses the same root for the Arabic word for ‘one’. I also feel that the meaning is congruent with the way Ace perceives himself.

Snake: “سيفين” / “Sefein”. Means “two swords”. From “Abu Sefein”, the Arabic name for Saint Mercurius, which means “father of two swords” in reference to the dual swords he wields in all depictions of him, the second sword believed to be given to him by Archangel Michael. Snake strikes me as a guy who would know all this lore at the ready.

Santa: “نعسان” / “Na'asan”. Arabic word that means “Sleepy”. Two conditions were important to me when choosing a name for Santa: 1- That it sounds incredibly silly out of context (and honestly within context) to keep the spirit of Santa, and 2- That it STILL includes the sound “san” in it, so he can deliver his iconic “Any of you chumps speak Japanese?” regardless of language. An ideal third condition would be a name that is shared with a popular figure, but despite going through every word in the Arabic dictionary with “سان” in it, this was the only fitting word I could find, so at the risk of making him sound like one of the Seven Dwarfs, I was forced to go with it.

Clover: “ربيع” / “Rabie’”. Arabic word that means “Spring” (the season), and uses the same root word as the Arabic word for “four”. I chose it because it maintains a sort of floral theme, and is also an actual common given name, much like Clover’s.

Junpei: “عين” / “Ayn”. Over here it is thought that the evil eye (Ayn) is warded against with the number five (Hamsa). I was reminded of this when I read that Uchikoshi said that if Junpei were to have a code name, it would be “Penta” or “Hand”, and the Hamsa is depicted as an open palm (5 fingers) with the eye (ayn) in the center.

June: “حزيران” / “Huzeiran”. Arabic word for “June” in some countries. Self-explanatory.

Seven: “سبع“ / “Sabea’“. This one’s a play on words but I haven’t decided yet if it works well or not. It is a variant of the Arabic word for the number seven, which is as straightforward as Seven wants, but at the same time it is one of the many Arabic words that mean “Lion”. While “Lion” was used as an early nickname for Ace due to physical resemblance, I feel it could also work for Seven due to his strength and courage.

Lotus: “Seshen”. Since I couldn’t think of a more fitting code for her than the Lotus flower, and the Arabic word for Lotus is also Lotus, to avoid redundancy, I’ve borrowed the Ancient Egyptian word for “Lotus”, which is “Seshen”. While it’s not Arabic, Ancient Egyptian still holds a lot of significance here in Egypt (and so does the Lotus flower!) so I think it’s okay to break the mould here.

Ninth Man: “الراجل التاسع” / “Ar-ragol At-Tase’”: Means “The Ninth Man” in Arabic. Hehe.

When we were commissioned to create “The Magic Trifolio” web story, an important part was introducing a new photographic style that reflected the concept of the story we tell.
