Um hello, can I ask you, how do you draw on your scans on Paint Tool Sai ? I've tried but I couldnt find how, and theres no tutorial on Internet :,)
Hello anon! Thank you for asking! So, I’m not really sure if you wanna know about coloring on the scanned photo itself or scanning, linearting and then coloring, so I’ll kinda try to explain how I do both. To colour my scans without linearting, like I did to the Bert doodles I posted, I just took the photo and pasted it on the first layer. I adjusted some saturation and contrast values with SAI filters to make the dark lines “pop up” a little more on the white background. After that, I just created other separate layers with lower opacity (around 70% to 50%, the skin and hair layers had more opacity to them to be more visible) and coloured them; one for each part of the drawing so the colours wouldn’t get too messy. Then I set them all to multiply mode to look a little more naturalNow scanning and linearting is what I do most of the times, cause digital art is a pain in the ass for me, but my linearting is still a little poor due to my traditional art style that tends to be a little messy. But the initial process is still the same: paste your photo/scan on SAI, but then instead of filtering, just lower the opacity of the layer, so you can see the forms and shapes of your scan, but also see your lineart clearly above it (usually for me around 45% is good enough). Then, create a second layer above it for the lineart. One thing that helps with getting a cleaner lineart is the stabilizer. Standard stabilizer on SAI comes set to 3, but you can increase the value to help keeping your lines ‘continuous’. The higher the stabilizer value, the slower and sharpier your lines will come out, and that’s good if you’re like me and your hand is a little shaky.
Little comparison between stabilizer levels, all lined with the same pen speed, but their formats are noticeably different, cause the line speed is different. The S category of estabilizer is the highest and most restraining, but I usually use just 10. Don’t go too high on the stabilizers, they can be mean sometimes. Then, once you’ve finished linearting, just hide/delete the scan layer (to hide, just click on the little eye icon next to the layer). One thing that I feel I should also let you know CAUSE I DIDN’T KNOW IT TIL LIKE, TWO MONTHS AGO AND THIS IS MAGIC, is the clipping group.
Let’s suppose this weird thing in black lines is the finished lineart of a drawing. Linearts too dark and solid can look weirdly unnatural, depending on your artstyle and coloring. So, there’s the clipping group! Yup, these random colours are there for a reason! Just create a second layer on top of your lineart, then select the clipping group option, right below the layer opacity, and then
Ta da!!! You can still colour on the layer after you select the clipping group option. But be aware that the layer that creates a clipping group with the one right beneath it, will only color lines that are included in the group. So, if you have a layer just for the hair lineart and you create a clipping group to color them dark brown, you won’t be able to color the eyes, which are not in the same layer as the hair, with the same clipping layer. (OH GOD THIS IS SO CONFUSING I HOPE YOU CAN UNDERSTAND)I think this is most likely all I can teach you on linearting or coloring on your scans without making this way too long. I hope this thing was somehow helpful and not so confusing :’) Good luck
