I'm going to university now (in Germany) and the uni i'm at offers catalan as a side course. Tomorrow i'll finally be at an event where they introduce the subject among others. I'M SO EXCITED!!!!! ^^ Finally! >< Sadly, there won't be a class for catalan literature (omg actually - if you have recommendations of important works from the recent centuries, i'd love to hear, but i'm just rambling, no pressure xD). There will be linguistics and speech praxis. I can't wait! :D
That's great!! I hope you enjoy it very much â˜ș
Some of the modern classics (from the late 19th century to the present):
L'Atlàntida (Atlantis, 1877) by Jacint Verdaguer. Epic poem that re-interprets history and legends. Jacint Verdaguer is the most representative poet of the Renaixença/Romanticism movement in Catalan literature.
Other poems by Jacint Verdaguer (1845-1902) and Joan Maragall (1860-1911) are the most important poetry of the Renaixença.
The theatre plays Terra Baixa (usually published in English with the title Martha of the Lowlands, 1896) by Àngel Guimerà. Also Mar i cel ("Sea And Sky", 1888) by him.
La febre d'or ("The gold fever", 1892) by NarcĂs Oller, the most representative of the realist movement.
The monologue La infanticida ("The Child Murderer", 1898) by VĂctor CatalĂ  (pseudonym of Caterina Albert). And her novel Solitud ("Loneliness", 1905), which is considered the most representative book of the modernist and naturalism movement in Catalan literature.
The satirical theatre plays by Santiago Rusiñol like L'auca del senyor Esteve (1917) —personally I really like his play El bon policia ("The Good Policeman", 1905).
The theatre play El cafÚ de la Marina ("The Marina Café, 1933) by Josep Maria de Segarra.
Poetry by Pere Quart (1899-1986)
La Plaça del Diamant (it has been translated to English with the titles In Diamond Square and The Time of the Doves, 1962) by MercÚ Rodoreda. Her novels Mirall trencat ("Broken Mirror", 1974), La mort i la primavera (Death in Spring, 1986) and Aloma (1938) are also iconic.
The short stories books by Pere Calders, most famously CrĂČniques de la veritat oculta ("Chronicles of the Hidden Truth", 1955).
The short stories book El cafĂš de la Granota (1985) by JesĂșs Montcada,
Poetry: Josep Carner (1884-1970), J.V. Foix (1893-1987).
The novel Bearn, o la sala de les nines ("Bearn, Or The Doll Room", 1961) by Llorenç Villalonga.
Poetry: Vicent Andrés Estellés (1924-1993), Salvador Espriu (1913-1985), Maria MercÚ Marçal (1952-1998), Miquel Martí i Pol (1929-2003).
The essays by Joan Fuster, most importantly Nosaltres, els valencians ("We, the Valencians", 1962).
Mecanoscrit del Segon Origen (Typescript of the Second Origin, 1974) and Totes les bĂšsties de cĂ rrega ("All The Load Beasts"?, 1967) by Manuel de Pedrolo, also personally by him I really liked the sci-fi short stories collection Trajecte Final ("Final Journey", 1975), and I will add my dad would be upset if I didn't mention his theatre play Homes i no ("Men and no", 1957).
Incerta glĂČria (Uncertain Glory, 1971) by Joan Sales.
Les veus del Pamano (Voices of the Pamano, 2004) and Jo confesso (I Confess, 2011) by Jaume Cabré.
I know some of them, at least Jaume CabrĂ©'s novels, Àngel GuimerĂ 's plays, Uncertain Glory, and some MercĂš Rodoreda novels have been published in German and/or English. In fact, Voices of the Pamano was a huge success in Germany.
I hope you enjoy the class very much!

I'm posting this because it's a bop and I haven't been able to stop listening to it for the past week. The title and song reference MercĂš Rodoreda, who is possibly the most famous Catalan author ever, she's certainly one of the most important writers in 20th century Catalonia. The protagonist of the video is reading her novel Mirall trencat (Broken Mirror), and there are several lines in the song which reference her works, hence the title. I'd try to mark the quotes, except that I would probably miss half of them, but if someone wants to take a stab at it I'd love to see that!
Deixa’m dir en la meva defensa Let me say in my defense que trobar-te aquĂ no estava a l’agenda, That finding you here wasn’t on my agenda que tinc mĂ©s que coll avall que aixĂČ de tu, de mi, That I’m in over my head, that this thing with you, with me que res: que era remoure la merda. That whatever, that it was fueling the fire SĂ© que no em convens, que Ă©s perdre el temps, I know you’re not good for me, that it’s a waste of time que no vals ni un dels segons que encara tinc. That you’re not worth even one of the seconds I still have Que l’amor, amb tu, com mĂ©s lluny, mĂ©s bonic, That love, with you, is better the further away it is citant MercĂš Rodoreda. To quote MercĂš Rodoreda
Deixa’m dir en la meva defensa, Let me say in my defense que trobar-te aquĂ no estava a l’agenda. That finding you here wasn’t on my agenda Que m’agrada caminar de nit, carrers petits. That I like to walk at night down small streets Hi ha mĂ gia en la cosa de perdre’t. There’s magic in the act of losing yourself Dius: em puc quedar una estona amb tu? You say, Can I sit with you a while? I somric perquĂš se’t veu d’una hora lluny: And I smile because I can see you from a mile off Si fas nosa no ho has mai de preguntar, If you get in the way you never need to bother asking aixĂČ s’ha de saber veure, You’ve got to be able to see that citant MercĂš Rodoreda. To quote MercĂš Rodoreda
[ TORNADA: Deixa’m dir que encara no estic bĂ©, Let me say that I’m still not okay i que intento no passar pel teu carrer, And that I try not to go down your street i que hi ha cançons que salto molt sovint. And that there’s songs that I often skip Ets tu, record per tota la vida. It's you, you're a memory for the rest of my life Deixa’m dir que encara no soc jo, Let me say that I’m still not myself que ara em falta temps per endreçar-te a lloc, That now I need time to tuck you away in your place que nomĂ©s hi ha vida si la vius a poc a poc, That there’s only a life if you live it slowly citant MercĂš Rodoreda. Hauries de veure That it works—you should see com he anat guanyant soltura, How I’ve been gaining independence com he esporgat pors paralitzants, gegants, i tant: How I’ve cast away paralyzing, gigantic fears; indeed les coses importants són sempre les que no ho semblen, The important things are always the ones that don’t seem it citant Mercù Rodoreda. 17 Juliol: Llac Manyara
Aviam, aixĂČ va aixĂ:
Jambo: Hola
Asante: GrĂ cies
Karibu: Benvinguts / de res
Raca Raca: depressa
Pole Pole: A poc a poc
Tafadhali: Si us plau
Habari za asubuhi: Bon dia
Usiku mwema: Bona nit
Hakuna Matata: cap problema
Les habitacions sĂłn tendes i no tant impressionants

okay answering in my main because reasons
Lazarillo de Tormes: a decent enough book, entertaining at moments. that is. the first time you read it. if you read it every fucking year you get tired of the fucking miserable boy. who is responsible for picking which books we read I just wanna talk đŸ”« (basically this boy is kind of a little shit and gets sold off to a blind old man who he tries to rob, then he ends up getting scammed by another dude and getting abused by his employees. eventually he gets married but his wife cheats on him with the owner of their property but he doesn't care much because he's dumb. (I don't remember much of why it was important ngl)
El Quijote: a book I can get behind. the ye old Spanish was funny. consistently entertaining, even if it was kinda long
Luces de Bohemia: something something the history reflected on the concave mirrors something something. it's a play. the best part it's like page 3 where there's a joke about collective suicide. it all goes downhill from there. it's supposed (?) to be a satire or something (again I forget why these were important). so ridiculous it got borning. this man's got debts to pay and goes on a wild chace at night meeting all kinds of quirky people trying to get money. I gave it a 1 out of 5
Nada: what if depression was a book (derrogatory). almost 400 pages and like the title says nothing fucking happens and boy does it deliver. it's so weird. basically homegirl comes to Barcelona with her relatives who suck. makes A friend and almost gets a boyfriend. is sad. then after a year she leaves. idk man it was so overwhelmingly borning I started to create an alternative reason for characters doing what they were doing (homegirl had a crush on one of her friends that was DATING HER UNCLE who was also dating someone and I went: okay what if murder) (that's the only thing that kept me going) 2/5
Maria Rosa: a girl is dating 2 dudes. pretty sure there was a gun involved at one point. we also read this twice and honestly one was more than enough. not the worst tho
Terra Baixa: on paper this story is great. basically rich dude marries off his lover to a secluded dude so he can marry another rich girl. said dude finds out his new wife he just met is still fucking the rich dude, runs away, but then comes back and kills the rich dude. reading it tho? so boring. the one character I liked sees the shit show that's about to happen and fucking levaves and like. wish that were me. 1.5/5
Tirant lo Blanc: Episodis Amorosos: look I loved the very sanitised version of this medieval tale they tell us when we are 8, and I was actually excited for this. until. well. we were to read the love episodes not the war ones. it was. so bad. homeboy is so horny for the princess and can't stop looking at her breast and đŸ€ą. also ye old Catalan. incomprehensible. thank god for the summaries online ngl
Mirall Trencat: look I love this book. it's actually good. style is readable (the bar was so low)(no. it's actually good). I was engaged, the plot's amazing (rich family gets obliterated). I actually wanted to read this book. finally some fucking good shit. 4/5
đŸ–€ Are there any book series that you’ve been meaning to start but haven’t gotten around to yet? Which ones are they?
And then the blue one about classics, because I know you’ve been reading those! (it’s been a long day—)
hi lyn!
ask here
đŸ–€ Are there any book series that you’ve been meaning to start but haven’t gotten around to yet? Which ones are they?
yes. there are. so many. my tbr is never ending. i have such a hard time starting new books it's unbelievable. i read 0 new books and add 10 to the tbr (which consists on a bunch of screenshots and books i do own)
but in short, i want to finish reading all of Jane Austen by the end of the year (i'm using this app called serial reader which has a bunch of classics for free and delivers 10 minutes of reading per day. it's been really useful so far) (i'm also doing the dracula daily but i gotta catch up after finals).
i also want to catch up with my favorite spanish writers, Iria G Parente and Selene M Pascual (3 standalones and a space opera trilogy, and finishing a steampunk biology). i'd also like to reread their fantasy sagas (one they are reprinting with revisions and i'm waiting for all three books to be out, the other i'm afraid to reread because i know i will cry so much. i'm also on a reread the grishaverse project. it started great but then i bought a special edition of SoC and CK and im waiting for it to arrive to continue (it has in line comments by the author). same issue with the folk of the air. because i only have the energy to reread if that
ïżœïżœWhich classic book or author do you think everyone should read at least once in their lifetime, and why?
classic wise, i haven't read much actually. we read some spanish and catalan classics in school (they all sucked so much except for one, but i dont think everyone should read it) (one day i'll go on a rant about the books we were made to read because why would you do this to us)
in english class we read adapted versions of classics (say, 2k very poorly written summaries that were a pain in the ass to get through), so i can't judge them for that
but yeah, six months ago, the only english classic i'd read was pride and prejudice (which im like. very normal about. but i also wouldnt recomend it? idk. i enjoy the trainwreck and seeing my parents in mr and mrs bennet because it's literally them). since december i've read a christmas carol, hamlet, and northanger abbey. and, honestly, i think the only one i think everyone needs to read is northanger abbey, for the only reason that sometimes you need to calm the fuck down and see the world from the pov of a very agressively 17 year old girl, you know?
also also. i haven't read the play but like... mar i cel. everyone should watch it. 10/10 not biased at all
