Reasons Caitlyn Kiramman is Autistic

A small note before I begin; I'm autistic, this is my interpretation of the character, it's okay if you don't agree but please don't bash me for my interpretation of one of my favourite characters

Strap in, this is going to be a long one

Stimming

Caitlyn doesn't stay still, especially when she's on her own with no other input. We see her spinning the pistol around her finger while she's focusing or rubbing her thumb and finger together, small things that are easy sensory inputs without being distracting.

Fixations

Caitlyn is set on figuring out what is going on in the Undercity; she has seemingly been focused on it for a long time as we see in the council archives that she was looking into Grayson’s death, that was probably the event that caused her interest in the Undercity and its criminal workings.

Excitement

Caitlyn gets excited when she figures something out, she doesn't want small talk when Jayce comes to see her, she wants to tell her closest friend about this thing she's found and she's genuinely excited about it.

Processing Times

Some things take Caitlyn a minute to understand; there’s a pause before she goes along with what Vi’s doing in the brothel, you can see her brain ticking away to figure out what's going on and, when she starts going along with it, she looks back at Vi in a way that seems to be asking for help and checking she's doing the right thing in the same expression.

Accidental Rudeness

Some of Caitlyn's questions are tone-deaf, not intentionally though, she's curious and doesn't understand but she wants to understand, some of her questions just miss their mark slightly. We can see that she's not trying to be rude, she's trying to understand someone in a different situation to her but doesn't understand how her questions sound rude since she's being straightforward instead of dragging it out and she feels genuinely bad when she realises that she was being rude.

Friends

In the times that we see younger Caitlyn, we never see her with someone her own age, all her friends seem to be adults - they're also adults that share her interests. These are people Caitlyn understands how to hold a conversation with, they have a common interest that makes talking to them easier, they're people that could probably keep up with her if she went off on a tangent about something that she found interesting, they're people that have passed the age of judging other people.

Anxiety in Social Situations

Caitlyn is pretty confident in herself, she's proud of her abilities, but we still see her getting nervous about talking to new people or addressing more than one person. Her mother and her best friend are on the council but we can still see her panicking underneath - especially when she's trying to figure out if she's allowed to share something or not - as she tries to push through it to make her point because she desperately wants to be able to help.

Social Cues

Caitlyn, for the most part, has an alright grip on social cues but that's probably because of her age, she's learnt what she needs to do. She still struggles though, especially in new situations; we see her look to her mother for help when Vi walks out, not knowing whether she's supposed to follow her or if she's even allowed to leave yet.

Masking

This one isn't as obvious but it's there, we see her "stuck up" air when she's in situations with people she's not comfortable around or situations she's just generally not completely comfortable in, she acts like the person people expect her to be, but we see she's actually not like that underneath, she's an expressive person that cares more than people think she does.

This is, probably not surprisingly since these are my two main fandoms, something I have thought about-

Vi would be an earthbender, think Toph and her earth gauntlets in Imbalance, and possibly a lavabender if she was in an environment where she could focus on herself and her own skills - she has the same brute force approach to things as Bolin

Caitlyn is either a nonbender or another earbender but metalbending focused, she has the precision required for it and I think she would have a style similar to Kuvira's in which there's a lot of adapting to the environment she's fighting in, much like how a sniper picks their post

Jinx is a difficult one, she's another that could be a nonbender (works best if Mylo (+Claggor if you want to double down on it) was a bender to sell the "jinxes everything" bit during act one) or she would possibly be a firebender, the lack of lessons and being taught how to work with it being the main factor for Powder "jinxing" things as she wouldn't be able to control it all too well

Viktor and Jayce would both be nonbenders, they're both a weird mix of Asami, Varrick and Sokka to me, I don't know how to explain that one

Mel would be an airbender I think, I don't know how to explain it but I think it fits

Now some side characters just for fun-

Grayson, earth- and metalbender, Lin Beifong, need I say more?

Vander, nonbender, just feels right

Cassandra Kiramman, waterbender, she's got the elegance for it but she stays closer to nonbending while using her waterbending for things like healing unless necessary - a product of her upbringing

Tobias Kiramman, nonbender, I don't think any of the bending types fit him, he's also kinda like the Sokka to Cassandra's Suki if that makes sense (and if Caitlyn is an earthbender then he'd have earthbending ancestors)

Marcus, either a nonbender or earth or fire, not too sure on him

I will happily assign bending types to other characters I've missed if anyone wants to offer them up-

CaitVi Headcanons

toph writing about more homosexuals? more likely than you think

Nicknames <3, we know Vi calls Caitlyn 'cupcake' but Caitlyn calls Vi things like 'love' and 'darling'

When Vi wants attention but Caitlyn won't give it to her, she picks her up and won't put her down until Caitlyn gives her attention (it doesn't bother Caitlyn as much as it seems, Vi wouldn't do it if it genuinely bothered her and she's quick to put her down if Caitlyn isn't in the mood for it)

Caitlyn is a very affectionate partner, she doesn't shy away from leaning against Vi or small touches in passing

Vi will sometimes drape her jacket over Cait's shoulders, just uses her as a coatrack

Lots of snuggles after long days

They hold hands a lot, no reason behind it, they just do

They bounce ideas off of each other all the time

Vi will take any chance to hype up Cait that she can

If Caitlyn looks done with Vi, she's usually just trying to act like she doesn't find her funny

Caitlyn Headcanons

i love her, thats all

Many think of her as boring but she's anything but, she's not against taking a more chaotic route to get what she wants if her name doesn't work

She has an eye for detail, she often picks up on the smallest things even when not actively trying

She's ambidextrous but left hand leaning and right eye dominant

She's autistic (i have reasoning for this one and a post on the way to explain it)

Caitlyn gets bored easily, she always needs something to do, something to keep her busy

She has a brain that's good for visualisations but she's also a physical learner, liking to fiddle with things until she figures out how they work

Rain is her favourite type of weather, she likes listening to the sound of it against windows

I said I'd write a proper thing on the jayce & cait explosion parallel so here we are

I put the scenes next to each other for anyone that can't see the parallel, the visuals of them line up pretty well though obviously it's not an exact line up due to the difference in the location but it's pretty clear when they're next to each other.

Time to put my film studies A-Level to use, sort of, my detail is lacking a bit since I'm just pointing out the similarities and not looking into the possible meanings

We'll start with the visual similarities; the explosion blowing them both back, the cut to an establishing shot to show the size of the explosion, the point of view shot looking at who they believe to be behind the explosion (Vi for Jayce and Jinx for Caitlyn) that goes in and out of focus, the way the siblings both take the chance to look at the effect of the explosion, the similar timing in how they pass out. It's too visually similar to not be intentional.

Next is the storyline similarities; both explosions are caused by the same person (though the explosion caused by her while she was Powder was accidental), they are both to do with a robbery (one caused by it (Jayce) and the other as a distraction for it (Caitlyn)), both of them play a key part in how the story continues (Jayce getting blown up leads to him meeting Viktor and kickstarts his journey into creating hextech - the man was going to take forever without Viktor's help I'm sure of it - and Caitlyn getting blown up kickstarts... well... the entirety of the rest of her storyline in season 1 because it seems to be the missing piece she needed.

That's all I've got for the moment, I can't hear the soundtrack well enough in the scenes to tell if they're alike or not

A chance to info dump about the Kirammans? I'll take that

The Kirammans are one of the only families that Grayson is truly loyal to - she'd listen to them over the council any day - and, with that, she has a lot of trust in them and they have a lot of trust in her.

If both Tobias and Cassandra are unavailable, Grayson is listed as the next emergency contact for Caitlyn and she will leave work if she can to be there when they ask for her

This does lead to a lot of situations like this where Grayson ends up saying concerning things while sat with Caitlyn's teachers because needs to take a work call during the meeting

Caitlyn thinks Grayson does it to scare her teachers into being nice but Grayson always tells her it's just bad timing

It's only bad timing after the first few, each time Grayson had a meeting with a new teacher she would indeed have a planned call just to show the teacher that she wouldn't be welcoming to any lies or exaggerations of events

Now for a few unrelated Kirammans + Grayson stuff (including cassgray stuff because we love them here)

Grayson can often be found at the Kirammans' house on her time off

She joins Tobias for tea while Cassandra is busy with council stuff, they have strange conversations

Grayson gives good snuggles, Cassandra and Caitlyn both take advantage of this

Family group hugs (often initiated by Tobias or Caitlyn)

While Grayson and Cassandra's shooting competitions are usually private things, they do bring Caitlyn along every so often when she shows how well she can keep up

Grayson: *on the phone* Just snap his kneecaps and he’ll talk, I’m at a parent teacher conference. Grayson: Anyways, you said Caitlyn is enjoying finger painting! That's great.

Their first meeting was when Marcus first joined and Grayson was overseeing training, she decided she liked him when he stood his ground instead of backing down like most rookies usually do when faced with her

They bitch toghether about things around the police department, from the paperwork to the people, anything

Another mentor/mentee relationship

It started as a favour it her parents but she came to care about Caitlyn pretty quickly so she continued to spend time with her even after it stopped being a favour

She would have absolutely been proud of the woman Caitlyn became

Grayson’s the one Caitlyn goes to for an honest opinion as the woman never sugarcoats what she says to Caitlyn unless it’s 100% necessary but, even then, she won’t fully sugarcoat it like many around Caitlyn do

Anytime Caitlyn uses her as an excuse, Grayson covers for her without fail

Grayson & Vander

If looked at through my part Zaunite Grayson headcanon (here), childhood friends and, if not, allies with a common cause that met during one of Grayson’s shifts patrolling the Undercity

They have a clear trust in each other, they wouldn’t have made a deal if they didn’t trust each other

Grayson is the “sarcastic best friend” when they’re together, she will not hesitate to remind him of things in a usually more condescending that necessary tone

I don’t have that many thoughts on them, I just think they’ve got a pretty neat friendship

Grayson & Cassandra

This one’s the favourite ship, many thoughts about this

The kyalin of Arcane

Tobias is still there, I promise, he’s a supportive husband that is perfectly fine with his wife having a girlfriend and the married couple still love each other just the same

It’s very much a secret relationship, neither wanting to deal with the politics of it in high society Piltover - not because of them being women but because one of them is married and the head of her house

Cassandra calls Grayson “darling” in private while Grayson calls her “love”

Both of them put on a tough exterior but they are absolutely soft for each other

Sneaking off to cuddle after long meetings

Grayson knows how to break Cassandra’s poised front within seconds, definitely a bad influence on her and has been since they first met

Shooting competitions when they have spare time, they find it a good stress reliever despite how competitive they get

I could go on about these two for ages, probably going to end up with a post just for their headcanons at some point

Accidental Rudeness

Caitlyn has no idea about the significance of The Last Drop to Vi, she has no way of knowing either since her and Vi wouldn't have had the chance to talk about it and Vi doesn't want to share anything too personal at this point, she just thinks this is Silco's base of operations and so makes a joke about it, a joke that she doesn't realise offends Vi and so is confused about her reaction

Misunderstanding Humour

"I'm an excellent shot."

This one, much like it did with Caitlyn, went over my head, I didn't realise Vi was supposed to be joking in this scene

Fact-Checking

"Airship, actually. An airship has a rigid metal hull. It's not a blimp."

This is something someone else pointed out and something that, now that I look at the scene again, is something I should've picked up on since it's something I'm guilty of doing myself. When hearing someone get a fact that you know wrong, there's a distinct urge to correct them - an urge we see Caitlyn giving into in this scene though its clear from the way that her tone shifts as she continues speaking that she regrets this and the judgement she gets from her fellow officers as a result of it

I wasn't trying to sell his achievement short, I didn't even realise my wording came across that way, I just meant it would've taken him a long time without a fresh set of eyes with a different mind that was actually willing to help him with this, that's what I meant by it taking "forever", Jayce had gotten himself stuck somewhere that it was going to take a while to get out of if he didn't get that push from Viktor, he probably thought he was going to be working on it forever because he was stuck and that's usually how it feels when you get stuck on something, it feels like it's going to take forever
