Review: Tomb Raider I-III Remastered
Tomb Raider I-III Remastered finds itself in a tough spot because what it aims to do is replicate the original trilogy with all of its content on modern hardware and it does it well. The biggest problem it faces is that the new coat of paint is largely just that -- the core gameplay is still rooted in early 3D jankiness and feels awkward to play now -- and in some ways, it's harder to wrap your mind around it now since no control scheme offered up feelings as natural as anything featured in a Tomb Raider game since the PS2 days onward.

Tomb Raider I-III Remastered starring Lara Croft is so good. This is how a video game remaster should be done. I’m very biased of course, as a fan of Tomb Raider and the classic Core Design games especially. But this very much is a remaster aimed at fans like me, you can tell. This remaster collection is what I’ve wanted for years at this point. The game has the overly helpful subtitle “Starring Lara Croft”, and I’m like damn right, this is a “return of the queen” moment for me, the return of classic Core Design Lara after over 20 years of neglect.
And I don’t even know how much sense this post will make to non-fans. I suppose everyone knows what a Tomb Raider is and who Lara Croft is, and the easiest way to explain is that this is a remastered edition of the first three games in the franchise, released annually from 1996 to 1998. It’s made by Aspyr, whose history with the franchise goes all the way back to making macintosh ports of these games back in the 90s.
And this truly is a complete collection of TR I-III, in that it doesn’t just include the base games, but the expansions each game received: Unfinished Business, The Golden Mask and The Lost Artifact. The first two were sold together with the original games as bonus levels for the Gold re-releases of the games, while the third got a separate release. The base games have been sold on GOG for many years (and also Steam, but the GOG versions run better), but the expansions have been abandonware for decades at this point. It was a pity, because the expansions were excellent and showed how cool expansions packs for games used to be (especially compared to the dlc of today) That these remasters finally allow them to shine once more is justification in itself.
Overall, this is a very “preservationist” remaster. You get modern graphics and modern controls, but these are just additions laid on top of the original games, which are mostly unchanged. In fact the original code and engine was actually used. And you can tell, because useful bugs for both casual players and speedrunners like the corner bug are actually preserved in the remaster, you can even get a steam achievement for using it. You can compare this to how Nightdive studios remasters old games, where their favored method is porting the game to their own Kex engine.
And for those who want to recreate the originals, it’s easy to do. The original tank controls is the default control scheme and you can toggle between modern and tank controls in the options menu. And you can at any time switch between new and original graphics literally with the press of a button. The majority of what I wrote about the original games way back in 2021 on this blog still apply (You can find my reviews for the original TR 1- 3, here, here and here).)
Yet as someone who has played the original games to completion so many times, I actually played all three games in the remaster with the modern graphics and the modern control scheme, and that’s because I preferred it that way. In fact I might find it hard to go back to the originals. I mostly toggled to the old graphics out of curiosity, to compare the textures.
The new graphics go for a cartoony non-realistic aesthetic which works really well and feels true to the original graphics, for even if they aimed for realism, the limitations of the time made them into 3d cartoons. And the graphics don’t try to go too HD and hide the inherent blocky squareness of the game world, which is such an important part of the look and feel of these games and the gameplay as well. The real point of the new graphics is to make the game look better on modern high-resolution monitors, in a way that feels true to the original games and it ably succeeds at that. And of course the new graphics are easily switched off if you don’t like them. But I did. The original graphics retain their charm, but they undeniably look very grainy and low-res at any modern display resolution, and the new graphics retain much of that charm due to their warm cartoonish style, while looking crisp.
I was skeptical about the other big addition, “modern controls.” It’s modeled off the control scheme in the 2006-08 LAU trilogy, and it’s, well, modern. Lara moves relative to the camera, moves instantly in the direction your input indicates, without left and right making her turn, etc.
I feared the modern controls because the classic controls were closely tied to the grid-based environment, and modern controls would loose that, ironically making the game harder. And my initial experiments with modern controls, trying to figure them out blindly, seemed to confirm that fear. Basic movies like the hop-back to set up a jump or safety drop off a ledge seemed absent. Yet that was only because I didn’t understand them. This was not entirely my fault, for the remasters don’t explain them at all, and that’s my main complaint with this remaster. Even the options menu to remap the controls is misleading, since it doesn’t clearly explain you have two action buttons now (in itself a sensible change). It simply calls one new button “secondary”, without explaining it’s “secondary action.”
There is no PDF manual included with the games, which we really needed. This page on Aspyr’s official site kinda is the closest to it we get, but it should have been included when you buy the game on gog or steam. And some fans explain it better, like this steam guide. There are also videos that helped me get my head around the new control scheme.
But once you do figure them out, modern controls are actually good. They are very fluid, without being too imprecise. They still give the player the option to move carefully, holding walk still means you will not walk off a ledge, and you can actually still safety hang off a ledge (just hold secondary action and walk off the edge, and Lara will hang from it, Angel of Darkness style). All the moves from the original tank controls you need are there, just in a different form. Just faster and more fluid. It’s not surprise that glitchless speedruns of the remasters all tend to use modern controls (while glitched runs use tank controls because it enables them to do the established set-ups for glitches, which as mentioned have been left in).
Other than these major but optional improvements, the changes are minimal. It's stuff like icons appearing when you are close to interactable objects, and boss health bars.
I noticed some changes in Tomb Raider III in an effort to ease some of the frustration of that game. You do actually get your ammo and medpacks back after being captured in Nevada this time, fixing a long-standing problem that I explained in my original review. Also the tribesmen’s blowguns are no longer hitscan, but have visible and thus potentially dodge-able projectiles. Otherwise the game is as frustrating (and shockingly racist) as ever. I do love it despite its flaws.
The other major change is that Unfinished Business expansion levels are re-ordered, so now the two Atlantis levels comes before the Egypt section. This is actually following the intention of the original developers and the intended storyline of these levels, so it’s an act of restoration of developer’s intentions compared to the original release of the expansion, instead of Aspyr imposing its own vision. And the levels do make more sense this way, the Atlantis levels are obviously meant to a direct continuation of the ending of TR 1, starting Lara off on the same slide she ended TR 1 on.
This remaster overall is a faithful act of artistic restoration. It’s a love letter to these games, made by people who love them and don’t want them changed too much. It’s truly a remaster for the fans, by the fans. Quite literally, developers were recruited by Aspyr from the fan community. And as an established Tomb Raider fangirl, I was quite pleased with the remasters. I don’t know how good it will be at bringing in new fans, but I’m very happy with it. Go buy it now, so maybe we’ll at least get Tomb Raider IV-V Remastered.

I like to call this "I'm winning in not having a life having an awesome life of video gaming" 😇 aka my Steam 2023 Year In Review!
I looooove the "We'd say you finished the fight, but you're still going." Accurate, lol! 😂
The only reason Andromeda dropped off abruptly in November is because I still can't get the launcher to, well, launch without crashing my computer. But one sweet day, my beloved Andromeda and I shall be together again! 🤗😉
Both @mrtobenamedlater and @naranghim have kindly offered me a ton of great advice on repairing my old man here. *pat-pats my faithful computer whose only fault is getting old*
It happens to us all, after all!
Anyway, at least I still have had the MCC or I swear, I would've gone off a light bridge somewhere!
Master Chief, Noble Team and my ODSTs have kept me clinging to a thread of sanity. 🤗🤗🤗
So, my Gaming Goal for 2024 is to, first of all, have a working computer again so I can play whatever I want. Then immediately following that, I want to finish my Scott/Peebee and Scott/Jaal playthroughs of Andromeda and I will have officially romanced everybody! 🥳💖
I'm definitely hoping to get the achievement for playing Halo: Reach on Legendary in under 3 hours.
I'm currently on track to finish Reach in... about 5-6 hours right now 👀 but hey, Reach is HARD on Legendary, what can I say? 🤷♀️ It just took me 1 hour 18 minutes to get through "Long Night of Solace" and, if you know Reach, then you know that space battle is a PILL. I need to find a better strategy than "Hide behind Anchor 9 and wait for everybody else to kill the enemies." It's a solid strat when it comes to surviving but it takes forever and you don't have that sort of time in a speedrun, after all. (The par time is 25, btw. *laughs in "I'm never making anything close to that but will try to get other missions under par so to have some room for it"*)
Anyway, I'm not afraid to have to grind for this achievement, it'll be even more awesome then when I get there, right? 😎👍
There I go, soaring into the air to achieve my dream, just like Emile achieving his dream to, um, be launched into a parking lot??? (I adore how he turns in mid-air to still aim at the Banshees, lol! That's Spartan dedication, frens! 🤣)
But the main thing I want to do is to try some of my other games, such as the original Mass Effect trilogy, Star Wars: Fallen Order, Portal 1 and 2, Titanfall 2, Tomb Raider (2013), Dead Rising, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and Dragon Age Inquisition! Those are just a few of the awesome games waiting for me in my Steam library! 🤗🤗🤗 I'm hoping to eventually pick up Detroit: Become Human, Resident Evil Village and Baldur's Gate 3 one day, too! 🤞😣🤞
Heh, those 3 games are a Neil Newbon trifecta, aren't they? 😂
Me @ most of Neil Newbon's characters. I am what I am, frens. I am a simple creature. 🤷♀️😜
Anyway! If anybody else is sharing their Steam Year in Review, please let me know, I'd love to run right over and check it out!
Thanks for reading this, if you did, and here's to a Happy New Year full of awesome games for us all! 💖💖💖

I was procrastinating on my grad school finals by reviewing my many, MANY notes on my Unperson outline, and here are some random things I wanted to share!
In addition to maaaany random notes and quotes, I also compile a list of assorted links to pieces of concept art or photography that I use as inspiration for describing environments, atmospheres, and costumes.
For example, Charlie's body armor is based off of the real Soviet SN-38 cuirass (the one on the left):
Two of the chief design inspirations for the Devourer were the Verdugo from Resident Evil 4 and the adoelescent demogorgon from Stranger Things:
These pieces of concept art from Rise of the Tomb Raider were instrumental to helping me describe the scenes of the gulag and the taiga in chapters 2 and 3:
And a little lore fun fact: in addition to their class-restricted armor and skill proficiencies, the Unperson characters also had restricted actions as well in the initial stages of planning! I decided to scrap this concept due to complexity, though - it would have worked in a webcomic-style medium, but not prose.
Anyway! Back to reviewing the outline for Chapter 4, and re-writing my version of the history of Showfall Media for the billionth time!

Tomb Raider 1 levels review: Level 1 - Caves
Length: Short
Difficulty: Easy
This level begins in a cave. It's a simple introductory level with a few dart traps, some easy to kill bats and wolves, also a bear. It has a simple timed run and 3 easy-to-find secrets. Yeah, you can finish this level in 6 minutes or less if you collect all medipacks.
Rating: 8/10

Ok time to go through some more small things quickly because I'm getting behind.
Will You Snail?
More fun and interesting than I expected. I wasn't really sure what I was getting into beyond it being cheap and having tons of positive reviews, but it turned out to be a precision platformer where you play as a snail (and can wear another smaller snail as a hat), and it's about the fear of AI literally taking over the world and whether reality is really real. Also the AI is an asshole and spontaneously spawns bullshit spikes and lasers and stuff exactly where it thinks you're about to go so you have to contend with that in addition to just making it through each room.
I had a good enough time to finish the story and get somewhere north of 50% completion, but I don't really see myself doing the optional stuff like beating everything on the highest difficulty. The auto-difficulty kept me somewhere in the 2-3 range out of 4 95% of the time with very rare spikes to 4, and with me getting worse at stuff like this over time as my reactions get slightly slower, my vision gets worse, and my brain just gets generally weird, I don't really see a point in pushing myself harder just to frustrate myself.
Lara Croft GO
It only took me forever to get around to this one, which I probably would've forgotten about if someone didn't gift me a copy a few days ago. Basically you, uh, raid tombs. Big surprise, I know, but this time it's a turn-based puzzle game. I liked the puzzles enough and different mechanics they introduced enough to finish it because some of them were reasonably clever/satisfying, but I'm not sure if I'll bother with the extra ones after the credits roll. Toward the end after I got the hang of it I tended to finish levels without having to retry more than a couple times, but just knowing I'd have to start over entirely for every mistake or misclick makes it less enjoyable.
I'm pretty sure it's my second favorite Tomb Raider game now, and one of only two I've ever finished. The other was the 2013 reboot, which I thought was great. I tried the sequel to that and didn't really like all the changes they made to the formula because they all made it less fun for me, and I always thought the pre-reboot ones were just bad. To be fair I heard the later ones did get better and I never tried any of those, but the PS1 era games were anti-fun for me.
I'LL KILL HER
More of a digital comic book than anything, like a visual novel with an extreme emphasis on the visual part and no decision making. The art style was enough to get my interest to try it, and that's probably the main thing it has going for it. The story is...fine? Not super deep or original and feels like it maybe has some translation or non-native English issues sometimes, but it all fits together well enough in the end I guess. All of the content warnings for this one for stuff like abuse and domestic violence and suicide.
Cris Tales
Somehow this is the only one of these that I gave up on before finishing it. A lot of stuff in it is absolutely gorgeous (go watch the animated intro, seriously), and I was getting into the setting and some of the themes it was hinting at, and the time shifting mechanics are pretty neat both for exploration and combat, but I just don't really enjoy playing the game very much.
Society has advanced beyond the need for random encounters, but Cris Tales has not. Good thing it has irritatingly long load times for each one, at least on the Switch, and it has to do it again going back from the battle screen to the main overworld. And I really am not into how the combat encounters are balanced. Even basic trash enemies a few hours into the game can do absurd amounts of damage, like 40+ when your characters barely have over 100 hp. You can reduce that with timed button presses like Paper Mario/Mario RPG games, but the animations while pretty are really bad at conveying the actual correct timing for stuff.
Basically I like most things about the game except for actually playing it. Well, it's fine in towns I guess, but there's too much other stuff I'm not into for that to make up for it. Oh, and the voice acting isn't terrible or anything, but it's definitely worse than most things I've played this year with voice acting and didn't really do it for me. Also it has the most basic and obvious bug that I'm mildly surprised I've never seen in anything else: it counts the entire time the game is suspended while the Switch is asleep toward your play time. I apparently spent 60 hours on the game, when really it was about 3.

Uncharted - Ambushed:
"Let's continue to talk about Playstation 3 games, and talk about Uncharted. As a big fan of Tomb Raider, this game is what I need in my life. I have finished the first three games, so expect level reviews for all three. Either way, I think this is a really neat way to start this game. It's a simple tutorial section with a big focus on shooting."
PS: the gameplay used for this gifset is not mine. The original video belongs to the user: XCV, on Youtube.

An Introduction
Hello everyone! Just thought I'd do a quick introduction!
I'm JLSoryu (Or James :) ), I live in Scotland and I guess I'm mostly here to share my passion for gaming, in particular retro games.
I've been into gaming from a young age when my family got an Amiga 500+. It was on that system I discovered a number of games that'd be with me forever such as Beneath A Steel Sky, Pinball Dreams, Lotus Turbo Challenge, Operation Stealth, Superfrog and Cannon Fodder to name but a few.
Growing up I'd have a friend who had a Mega Drive where I'd first play what would become one of my all time fav games of all time in Sonic 2.
From the Amiga we'd move to the original Playstation through which I'd play a whole host of incredible games across so many genres from my first 3D Platformers (Crash Bandicoot), to my first JRPGs (Wild Arms), action games like Tomb Raider, Syphon Filter and Metal Gear Solid and beyond.
After that I'd move onto the PS2, and as I got older I'd be exposed to so many more games I'd love - MGS2, Burnout 3, Timesplitters, GTA Vice City, Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3.
And the journey would go on. New systems would come and go, but i'd always make an effort to keep in touch with the ones that had gone before, and that has only grown over the last couple of years as I've picked up systems that I never had growing up like the Dreamcast, N64, Sega Saturn and Mega Drive and expanded my colleciton of PS1 and PS2 games.
Over the last year or two, I made the decision that I wanted to start sharing my passion for retro gaming with others, so I set up my Youtube channel, which was made to just kinda share anything nerdy I liked but also had a focus on retro gaming and last year I started streaming weekly on twitch, just showcasing games I find interesting for all to see.
That'll be mostly what I do here, post my videos and streams, any retro reviews/thoughts and share pics of my collection or anything interesting I pick up.
Anyway, hopefully I get to know more of you in the retro gaming community on here! Thanks for reading and I'll post less rambly things soon :)

Throughout March, we have updated the website with some big things relating to several parts of the franchise. Here is a summary of the additions:
The Tomb Raider 3 Website Revisited - on our website, we have created several of the old official websites, calling them 'revisited' as they can now be viewed in full in modern times. We've changed some of the links so that they either go to archived pages (reviews/previews) or in the case of the 'buy it now' links, they don't work at all since the original link doesn't work anymore. There are some instances where we haven't changed the links as it is also nice to see where they once went - we were a little conflicted on which was the best thing to do with them. As the TR3 website was the last to revisit, we've created a portal page so that you don't have to go to each game's section to find the link, but can see all the revisited websites in one place.
Cancelled Games Category - this was one section that we hadn't tackled until now as we didn't feel like we knew how to present the little content that there was. The 'Lara Croft: Reflections' is the largest section, with thanks to KillerZ for allowing us to use imagery they had unpacked with Blue_Box. Look under the 'Cancelled Games' drop down menu on the home page side bar to view them.
Tomb Raider Reloaded Category - with the release of the latest mobile game, we have been creating, adding and updating pages with a vast amount of images and information, to help players understand the different elements to gameplay. There are details on the abilities, gear and the events, and even a 'how to play' page with some little tips that we have learnt along the way. Since we are updating this section as we play, there may be some blank spaces so bear with us.
Top Cow Tomb Raider Comics - we had made a start on this section quite a while ago but didn't finish it. Whilst we're still a long way off from finishing, we have at least completed the pages for the first series of Top Cow comics. We've yet to start Journeys, one-offs and crossovers, as well as any of the Dark Horse comics, but we will in time.
One other change we have done is to add drop down menus to the side bar on the home page. We felt that this would not only tidy the side bar but also allow us to expand on what we could offer on the home page. You can now clearly see what is present under the category without each new addition making the page longer. Sadly, we're aware that this new layout doesn't work too well with mobile devices. Although our website code is responsive, it still doesn't look great. This is something we'll try to look into in the future.
Thanks to all who have dropped by and visited the website. We are almost constantly working on it, be it with new pages, additions to current pages or correcting errors. It still amazes us that people are interested in the content we have created, and we still get a buzz from creating new content and sharing it. Take care all!

Extremely disappointed but not at all surprised that GameSpot is using Tomb Raider to get clicks out of angry Tomb Raider fans.
Don't drag the most successful woman in gaming history into petty shit.
She's had a two-decade career in gaming, had TWO Oscar actresses portray her in films, and if you take inflation into account, both of Angelina's movies still did better.
Not to mention that Tomb Raider is an actual household name and Lara Croft is a pop culture icon outside of gaming and had that status even before the movies.
On the other hand, no one knows what an Uncharted or a Nathan Drake is outside of gaming, Tom Holland carried the entire production with his name alone.

Saying a black woman looks like a man in a wig, not the best look. Maybe you and the rest of the balkans should go back to blowing each other up and leave the radical feminism to people who aren’t racists? Just a thought :)
At first I was confused what this hate mail was about. lol But then I remembered I wrote a comment on a post about a 38yo black guy who brainwashed young people by telling them that you don't have to be young in order to 'transition'. He shot himself up with a bunch of synthetic estrogen, claimed he now had hips (how?!), put a wig on his head, dressed himself in heals and a skirt and claimed he 'felt' like a woman.
So yeah, you should read up on what RADICAL feminism really stands for. I'll give you a hint: biological sex CANNOT be changed just because a guy has a fetish for wearing heals and women panties. No matter the race :)
PS: Oh don't you worry about Balkan people, you wouldn't even know where to point on the map lol

Would’ve just been quicker to call the tranny a nigger since that’s what you’re focused on but go off.
You trans lovers really are baffling sometimes. Writing two slur words in the same sentence and claiming I am the one who's transfobic and racist, when the only thing I wrote on that post was that the dude "still looks like a man" is a bit schizophrenic. I still would've written that even if he was a white guy.
