Everyone forgetting Tom Thumb and Thumbelina is there made me laugh but Pib upon remembering going “i wanna eat you”? Zac keeps nailing this cat behavior.

if disney were to remake thumbelina, how would they go about it? or atleast how would you go about it, if you were in charge? i'd imagine a newer retelling of thumblina, for the titular character, would draw more inspiration for her characterization from a dragonfly. small but full of engery and daring.

Actually interestingly enough Disney already did a Thumbelina movie in 2002 under their Buena Vista/Miramax label! It takes a modern spin on the story and features Jennifer Love Hewitt as Thumbelina and Elijah Wood as Tom Thumb!

Is it a perfect movie? No, it’s got some clunky flow and odd animation but honestly it’s also got a lot of charm and a surprisingly terrifying/fun villain in the Mole King

And Tom and Thumbelina are pretty darn cute together. Tom has a bit of Love at First sight with Thumbelina but I mean she is the first girl his size he’s ever seen so I’ll give him some leeway xD and their chemistry is actually pretty good imo. (Though I will admit that I’m also going through a layer of childhood nostalgia here)

But yeah I’ve actually decided to use this as my DisneyVerse version of Thumbelina! I’ve got it set in Our World in the 50s as that seems to be the time period based on the clothing/technology. Sadly it’s not on DisneyPlus but you can get it on YouTube!

I was inspired by Hippiezawa to make an Thumbelina/Tom Thumb Erasermic image. I won’t be working on this anytime soon but I wanted to draw this. I had no idea what outfit to give Thumbelina Hizashi, so I took inspiration from Tom Thumb and gave him a shirt made of spider webs and rat fur boots. I’m mad that my scanner ruined the cross hatch I drew on Hizashi’s shirt but oh well. The bg flower image in the first pic is public domain.

Sometime last week I was thinking about William Finn and his musical A New Brain, specifically about how a. it was semi-autobiographical and b. the main character was a songwriter for a kids' show, and I got to wondering what WIlliam Finn had worked on that inspired that plot point. So I poked around his wikipedia page and was instantly caught off guard when I saw The Adventures of Tom Thumb and Thumbelina listed under his filmography. Not because I'd seen it, mind you, but I knew of it, and had never had a reason to bother checking it out. Well, now I had a reason.

So I watched it over the weekend, and I have not been able to stop thinking about it since. Because it was so close to being good, but just couldn't quite get there. There some good lines and great voice performances, but there were also a lot of really dumb lines and annoying voicework. The animation is pretty meh the whole way through, but I've seen worse. And of the three main songs, the only one that is recognizably William Finn is the villain's song, but that's no surprise as clearly everyone involved with that character was having a great time.

I can't properly articulate it right now, so I might make another post at a later date, but what I really keep coming back to is all the ways I would have handled the plot differently. There are so many connections that are set up and then not acted on, or given just the briefest of mentions. It's maddening, is what it is.
