Hi!! Im coming from the absolute hell that is tjlc and was wondering if you have any recs for shows with same sex couples? Hopefully main or prominent and happy ending. Also could you maybe expand on your criticism of tjlc? I'm so doubting that maybe I was manipulated or something but idk I think all the older peeps involved really believed it was gonna happen and I got myself into this mess. Just bc I'm younger I don't think u can really blame them??idk. Please elaborate on for ex. grac*books?

Hey! I’ll address the tjlc stuff and then I’ll give you some recs, okay?

I used to be part of the bbcs fandom, up until mid 2012 when I noticed how awful people were being about Elementary. Here’s a post about the early issues experienced in the fandom and a post abt how the bbc sherlock fandom at large harassed the elementary fandom.

I don’t think everyone in TJLC was manipulated into shipping Johnlock, nor do I believe that everyone who believed Johnlock might be canon (or hoped it’d be canon) were manipulated.

However, Grace has a long fandom history of getting super into a slash ship and then bullying people who didn’t 1. ship her ship or 2. agree with her meta. I know for a fact that my friends have been told to kill themselves for saying JL wouldn’t be canon and that up until Saturday even people were getting nasty messages disagreeing with TJLC.

In a 2012 interview, Steven Moffat said this about the John/Sherlock relationship:

I think we’re obsessed with it, to the point where I know a lot of people are saying ‘Well, John and Sherlock clearly love each other, they must be having sex.’ But you can love someone without fancying them. If your’e not wired to fancy someone, you just won’t. But what’s that got to do with it? Really, what’s that got to do with the important relationships?

I shipped Johnlock for a while and I could still ship them in s1 & s2 canon. I can’t ship them from s3 bc I don’t think the dynamic ended up being healthy. So this isn’t me coming from the perspective of hating them. However, an adult like Grace should know what q/eerbaiting is and when people pointed out that Johnlock was baiting, she would bash them.

If you look at Moffat’s history of lgb representation, the reoccuring pattern is that he doesn’t actually care about lgb people. He does more harm than good, actually, especially when you consider that he decided that Irene was a lesbian and then had her fall in love with a man.

At the end of the day the adults in TJLC made promises that they could not keep and even if they insisted they were believing it would be canon in good faith, they hurt a lot of people with their actions, from the people who were cyberbullies to the teens who are let down and suicidal over all of this. And instead of admitting that they’re wrong, they speak of a secret fourth episode. They claimed that a fake episode was shot. They’re doing everything except owning up to the fact that they were wrong and apologizing to everyone they hurt and let down.

Okay so happy same-gender ships is (tragically) harder to come up with than simply shows with happy lgb characters? esp bc I quit watching a lot of tv.

To answer your second ask yes, the lesbians in Supergirl are happy together. I’m obsessed with Yuri on Ice which features a canon happy gay couple in a homophobia free world. Captain Holt on Brooklyn Nine Nine is married and very happy, but his husband doesn’t show up very often?

Shows that I haven’t watched that have canon same-gender couples: Rosewood, Queen Sugar, The Fosters (which features two moms! I watched the first season which is good but it’s v dramatic and there’s a lot of :| :| :| :| stuff happening), Noah’s Arc, Cr-xy Ex Girlfriend (which has this wonderful coming out song).

I can think of a lot of shows with same gender couples that I’d tell you not to watch l o l why is tv so trash
