#to be a fanfic writer reflecting on. identity within fic--a medium where you're always extrapolating off preexisting media

i do wonder sometimes, in trying to write fic that sticks very close to canon in tone and voice, whether the identity of my writing becomes lost. like, i don’t write AUs with complex worldbuilding, or niche kink, or particularly long and plot-heavy pieces. i write with the goal of (with few exceptions) producing fic that could slot into canon. and this is an aspect of my fic writing that i generally take pride in, i feel like i'm at least pretty good at adopting the vibes of the media i'm writing for, it's something i want to do, i think it makes for better fanfic, but. at the same time, i kind of lament not having a Writing Identity that could allow my stuff to be more memorable. idk.
#marine blogs#this is kind of part of a greater reflection that i am basically always agonizing over#in regard to ALL my writing (both fic and original) which is#'is this actually making *anyone* feel *anything*?'#kind of hesitant to post this b/c it does feel a little silly#to be a fanfic writer reflecting on. identity within fic--a medium where you're always extrapolating off preexisting media#but i am at least a little curious if anyone else has felt similarly
