At the same time Queen Jane was not expected to be a complete cipher. Nor should we regard her as such just because she was frightened of the King (as most people were by this time, and with good reason). One notes that the king's outburst referred to the fact that he had 'often' warned her against meddling; she had simply gone too far on this occasion and on a particularly sensitive matter.
