Note

I think some people are mistaken with the whole Jacob situation, no one was mad at him because they thought he was 'shading' Tom lol at least not that I saw. He's just constantly being weird, rude, inappropriate, ungrateful, and then tries to play the victim and drags Tom into it. He's always saying no one likes me and you all just like Tom and Z, there's a reason for that. If he was a nice genuine guy in public then Tom and Z wouldn't have to hype him up all the time, people pick up on vibes.

You're not the only fan who has shared this sentiment with me.

The only thing I will say is that while I do feel that Jacob would prob benefit from using more discernment when using social media as a "public figure" in the public eye, at the same time, he is still really close with both Tom & Z, and I feel as though they wouldn't be such good friends with him if he were really someone who had unfavorable characteristics irl in person.

Jacob comes across to me as someone who's social media persona/personality isn't exactly how his personality is in person. I def don't think he's like his "Ned" character in the Spider-Man franchise (no way lol 😅), but I don't think he's exactly how he portrays himself on social media either. Just a guess.... 🤷🏾‍♀️

What I THINK might be going on is that he sometimes struggles with the fans/fame aspect of social media at times. 👀 I also recall that in the beginning of this whole franchise, he was one of the actors (among many 🙄) who were treated quite unfairly by many fans (not necessarily Tom's fans, but just gp and Spider-man fans just in general) for being "different" from how ppl originally imagined Peter's best friend Ned would look. Zendaya (MJ) and Tony (Flash Thomson) were also among several of the actors who were criticized and mistreated online. It could be that maybe Jacob hasn't quite forgotten how he was treated, and sees a bit of a double standard in the fandom, and therefore gets a little hurt/frustrated with the status quo at times. 🤷🏾‍♀️

There is also the other possibility that he's just having fun, enjoying life, seeking attention, and isn't really thinking that deeply about things lol.

Just a thought.... 🤷🏾‍♀️

Either way, I feel like if he really wants a REAL, lasting, successful career in Hollywood in the future (which, I'm honestly not even sure if this is even his goal tbh lol... he could just be living in the moment for all I know), he would do well to take a page from Zendaya or Tom's book, and just maybe use a little more discernment (and privacy) on social media going forward. 😊

Companies therefore are much more accountable for their conduct and value (Tench & Yeomans 2017). This can either play to their advantage, or hinder it in a critical way.

As such, businesses need to foster relationships with stakeholders by leveraging the power of digital media. The goal is to have a community of people who support the organisation, who resonates with the brand’s value and message.

An example of modern organisations championing this is Shameless Media. Utilising digital media, Shameless engages with their stakeholders through strategic branding and content marketing.

How can we capture people’s hearts and minds in an attention economy? Let’s learn from this millennial start-up.

CASE STUDY: SHAMELESS MEDIA

Profile

Shameless Media (SM) is a millennial gen Z’s destination for all things digital content. Operated in Melbourne by a team of five young women, the company was founded in 2019 by writers Zara McDonald and Michelle Andrews.

Although relatively young, the podcast venture has accumulated a consumer base of over 20 million listeners, plus a growing community of 220,000+ followers across Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. SM also recently created a brand-new agency for content creators and influencers, The Sana Agency.

Stakeholders

Since its inception, the podcast has not had a single episode that has not been sponsored (Forbes 2021). More notably, Shameless listenership is overwhelmingly 94.7% women in their 20s (Gillezeau 2021).

At first glance: Eye-catching cover. Good tag line (“The pop culture podcast for smart people who love dumb stuff”). Almost always seen in the Top Charts.

My thoughts: I was surprised to discover how new the podcast is. Its popularity, large growing number of listeners and content quality make Shameless seem a lot more established.

Open and honest, the hosts are not afraid to let audience knows where they stand on critical issues (feminism, politics, climate change etc.). New episodes are regularly scheduled which is good for audience retention.

As a consumer, I am drawn to the show/company for their seeming authenticity and relatability. Not to mention the well-balanced research that allows audience to form their own opinions without being spoon-fed. 10/10 recommend.

2. Website

At first glance: Layout is easy to look at. Visually appealing. All relevant info seems to be there.

My thoughts: Nice design, but not as much interactivity as I would have liked. When I tried looking for more information on the founders and organisation, something like an About Us section for example, there was none. Neither was there any resource or material on the business side of things (annual reports or data analytics or anything of the sorts).

One may excuse this considering the age of the organisation. However, I believe SM might benefit from a website update or revamp. It will certainly be helpful for those like me who are curious, who do research on the firm and would therefore like more access to information.

3. Instagram

At first glance: Quite large following. Relatively high audience engagement. Content layout not my personal taste, but appealing overall.

My thoughts: Shameless has great social media presence, especially on Instagram. The company made good efforts in interacting with followers. There are the ‘Your say Fridays’, polls and Q&A every other day on Stories. Users regularly comment on posts (memes, podcast updates & announcement), and many get replies from admin.

Overall, Shameless is doing very well with social media engagement and audience interactions.

4. Facebook

At first glance: Not much to see/do as this is a private group. Nice cover image though.

My thoughts: Large community of readers of nearly 34,000 members. The group has been active since 2019. While discussion threads cannot be publicly viewed, those interested in the content can find related episodes on the Shameless podcast.

Over on Instagram, there are links in bio to the book-selling site for each month’s pick. Makes me wonder whether or not these are affiliate links.

5. LinkedIn

At first glance: Small-to-medium sized following. Appealing visuals, though not too much information.

My thoughts: I have seen the Shameless LinkedIn profile before, but has only started following them recently. The account is not too active, the latest post was from a few months ago. Perhaps this is because the content that circulates on LinkedIn often revolves around business culture, not the usual focus by SM. Most of the posts thus far are general announcement and job openings.

In the future, SM might be benefit from a more active LinkedIn page, so as to not only attract new audience and potential talents, but also to establish their presence more firmly among competitors in the corporate world.

The corporate brand is constantly being co-created by organisation with their stakeholders. Dialogical communication is said to enhance this along with corporate reputation (Gundolf et al. 2018; Ozer 2020; Rosenberg & Seager 2017).

So far, leveraging social media has helped Shameless achieve their goal and stay true to their brand. “Win their niche, core audience, nurture specific community of mostly young working women” (Gillezeau 2021).

The company’s success is in no small way thanks to the relationship they have with their audience. SM has intimate understandings of what the audience wants, and are able to deliver it.

This is in large part due to the founders being in the same demographics as their audience. As McDonald put it, “[W]e wanted to tap into a younger demographic that we thought were generally being ignored by mainstream media” (Forbes 2021), which explains the company slogan.

“We make content for ourselves, our mates, and you”.

Branding and content wise, SM is doing a good job capitalising on the trends, particularly with interactive content, content marketing, and online content communities (Clark-Keane 2021; Thomson 2019).

Yet, it is also important to note the fortunate position SM finds themselves in. As a millennial start-up, they are already advantaged by having skills in digital media and technologies.

Nonetheless, through forces of strategic digital communication, Shameless Media has been successfully engaging with their stakeholders through a combination of clever branding and content marketing.

What would you say to the All Lives Matter movement supporters?

George Floyd Social Justice Writing Competition

Dear,

My name is Rainy Mao, a prospective student of a U.S. university. I

am writing to the supporters of the All lives Matter movement. Our

world has become more chaotic because of racism. George Floyd, a

black man, was abused by the white policemen till death, and police

violence is not rare in the U.S. In this case, not only one black life has

lost, but a family has gone. Sorrow comes in me like an influx of huge

waves. I am sympathetic because I encountered racism when I was

small, and that experience haunts me. My two years in Miami, Florida

leave me with wonderful memories but also a significant

understanding of racism. Some people ignored my existence, imitated

my accent and, pushed me as if I was an object. I remained silent and

tolerant, like “what an Asian was supposed to be.” Therefore, it

touches and impresses me when people initiate a movement to stand

with George Floyd, to stress the severity of this common issue of

racism, and to seek solutions. Racism has shown the moral decay of

societies, and justice needs to be restored.

Supporters of All Lives Matter are pioneers. Whoever you are,

supporting online or offline, black or white, you are courageous

pioneers. You take the social responsibility to achieve equal rights for

all people and lead the protests. On social media, you raise awareness

of racism and repost information of the movement. Offline, you go on

different protests.I particularly admire Gilary, a women leader of this

movement who is humble but bold. She fights racism, creates space for

black Muslim women in Canada, and helps then speak up. She is a

lighthouse that leads people to the right path and she will make justice

possible step by step. I want to thank her and so many others like her

for their courage and passion. You all are bold enough to break the

conventions and speak for minorities, and you have lightened up

people’s lives and make them feel that they are not alone.

However, I do want to clarify the aims of this movement since some

protests strayed from their original goals. Black Lives Matter or All

lives Matter is all about equal rights, meaning that everyone is treated

equally before the law. No one will judge or treat you differently

because of your race. However, something during the movements has

astonished me. First, in Washington DC, protesters rushed into a

restaurant and forced a white girl to hold a fist and shout with them.

This girl claimed afterward that this frightened her, and even as a

supporter of Black Lives Matter, she was unwilling to be forced to

protest. Second, people are misleading each other, and some protests

have gone too far. In June, in order to ease people’s anger, some white

policemen got together and washed black people’s feet. Some suggest

that these actions will unit people. But, to my mind, these people make

the white policemen feel surrendered since washing feet means

obedience. This is not equal rights. It is just like the misconception of

feminism. They want people to have the same treatment instead of

one’s life over another. Washing feet, screaming on the street, and

holding fists do ease people’s anger, but these actions show that

people are lack of considerations, and some are too prone to making

chaos. Instead, we should put the time to find solutions or the root of

racism. By doing so, our vision of “equal rights” will be realized

faster.

Last but not the least, I encourage all the supporters of the All Lives

Matters to do a few more things. First, it is important to self-educate

ourselves about racial and gender issues as well as other cultures.

Stereotypes exist because of the deep history backgrounds. We should

pay attention to social and historical issues and differentiate the bias

of each.

Second, it is important to listen to the experiences and feelings of the

people who need help. Even though it could be hard to feel the same,

we should still give them the chance to share their thoughts. Being a

listener can make them feel warm. Sharing their ideas via articles and

social media helps the larger public to know and understand their

situation.

Third, we need to recognize our privileges and use them for the

purpose of helping others. Being privileged means that we have the

benefits that others do not because of our skin color, nationality,

religion, or gender. For instance, my friend Kathrine, a white young

woman, clearly knows that a policeman will not stop her on the street

because of the privileges of her skin color. But she stands out with her

dark-skin friends and gets through racism together.

The world can change us in a flash, but it is arduous to change the

world. Let us make the world a better place bit by bit, starting from

you and me.

NFHS, NIAAA to Hold 51st National Athletic Directors Conference in Virtual Format

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (October 13, 2020) — The annual National Athletic Directors Conference (NADC), co-sponsored by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA), will be conducted in a virtual format Monday, December 7, through Monday, December 14. The conference will take place virtually for the first time in its 51-year history in lieu of the in-person event originally set for Tampa, Florida.

Although adapting the conference to the virtual realm is far from ideal, and the loss of live human interaction cannot be remedied, the leaders of the two organizations said there are some benefits to a virtual event that would not be available with the standard conference. Streaming workshops, meetings and exhibit show sessions online will allow them to be viewed by a much larger audience – an audience that will also be able to watch any session on-demand.

“We’re looking at it as an opportunity to reach out to individuals who perhaps have never experienced the NADC before and this can serve as an introduction for them,” said Mike Blackburn, executive director of the NIAAA. “We can provide members with an opportunity to take part without traveling. The other aspect of it is that the sessions within our virtual national conference will be recorded. So, even though this is occurring without athletic administrators on-site, they may be continuing to work in their schools and school districts. And if they miss a portion of it due to responsibilities, they can go back and take that in. We are thankful for technology that allows for this outreach to directors of athletics.”

“We are thrilled and grateful to help provide this professional development opportunity for our country’s athletic directors,” said Karissa Niehoff, NFHS executive director. “With everything we all have been through with regard to the pandemic, we felt it was imperative we make this event happen in some capacity. We wanted to give athletic administrators a chance to improve their craft, and to learn valuable techniques for navigating the unprecedented challenges they face currently.”

In addition to being moved online, the conference has been expanded from its typical five-day schedule to an eight-day slate that will include four days of NIAAA leadership training courses to begin the festivities.

“We’ve taken a normal, five-day on-site conference and have adjusted it to try to keep all of the aspects of the conference in place that we can,” Blackburn said. “We have added four days of leadership training courses at the beginning, so, on those days, there will be 12 courses taught for our athletic administrators to participate in.”

During the opening four-day stretch of virtual leadership training courses presented by the NIAAA Leadership Training Institute, one 900-level course will be taught each day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST – LTC 901, LTC 902, LTC 903 and LTC 904, respectively – while four different combinations of 500-, 600- and 700-level courses will be showcased from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Attendee Orientation Session will kick off the second phase of the conference at 2 p.m. Friday, December 11, followed by the first of six hour-long workshop sessions that will be held throughout the final four days of the NADC.

At 5 p.m. on Friday, December 11, Tony Dungy will be featured as the conference’s Opening General Session speaker. A former National Football League (NFL) player and coach with 31 total seasons of experience, Dungy is now an analyst for NBC’s Football Night in America, as well as a spokesman for All-Pro Dad, a national fatherhood program. In 13 seasons as an NFL head coach, Dungy posted a 139-69 career record and made the postseason 10 times, culminating with a victory in Super Bowl XLI as the coach of the Indianapolis Colts in 2007. In 2010, following his retirement, the Colts organization added Dungy to its Ring of Honor.

In addition to his storied NFL career, Dungy has authored six books, including “Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, and Priorities of a Winning Life,” which sold more than 1 million print copies and reached No. 1 in the hardcover nonfiction section of The New York Times Best Seller list. Dungy previously served on the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation as an appointee of George W. Bush and has been active with many community service organizations in the Indianapolis and Tampa Bay areas; among them are the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Athletes in Action and the Basket of Hope program at Indianapolis’ Riley Hospital for Children.

Derrick Brooks will conclude the 2020 NADC as the speaker for the Closing General Session at 4:20 p.m. on December 14. One of the greatest high school football players in Florida history, Brooks was named 1990 National Defensive Player of the Year and to multiple all-America teams as a star linebacker at Booker T. Washington High School in Pensacola. Those accolades earned him a place in the NFHS’ National High School Hall of Fame in 2019, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Hall of Fame in 2015 and to the FHSAA All-Century Team. A shining example of a student-athlete, Brooks went on to be a three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) First Team selection, two-time consensus All-American and a two-time Academic All-American at Florida State University, a resume that later earned him an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Toward the end of his outstanding 14-year National Football League (NFL) career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – one that saw him named to six NFL All-Pro teams, 2002 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and a champion of Super Bowl XXXVII – Brooks realized a lifelong dream in 2007 when he partnered with Eddie DeBartolo to open Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School in North Tampa. Since retiring from the NFL, Brooks has made it his life’s mission to positively impact the lives of young people in the Tampa Bay area.

While speedy scientific analysis is highly useful if it’s good, flawed or misleading science can sow panic and may make a disease epidemic worse by prompting false policy moves or encouraging risky behaviour.

A Reuters analysis found that at least 153 studies – including epidemiological papers, genetic analyses and clinical reports – examining every aspect of the disease, now called COVID-19 – have been posted or published since the start of the outbreak. These involved 675 researchers from around the globe.

By comparison, during the 2003 SARS outbreak, it took more than a year for even half that number of studies to be published.

Richard Horton, editor-in-chief of The Lancet group of science and medical journals, says he’s instituted “surge capacity” staffing to sift through a flood of 30 to 40 submissions of scientific research a day to his group alone.

Much of this work, according to those watching its flow and content, is rigorous and useful. Vaccine developers, clinicians, diagnostic makers and policy agencies have snapped up genetic codes, phylogenetic trees and epidemiological models to help them start work on catching the virus and containing its spread.

But much of it is raw. With most fresh science being posted online without being peer-reviewed, some of the material lacks scientific rigour, experts say, and some has already been exposed as flawed, or plain wrong, and has been withdrawn.

“The public will not benefit from early findings if they are flawed or hyped,” said Tom Sheldon, a science communications specialist at Britain’s non-profit Science Media Centre.

The National Bank of Australia has already begun on its effort, although it doesn't yet offer any Islamic financing itself yet.
