The Packards in Tennessee and a research bust
Tumblr media
On July 3rd, I noted on Twitter that I had found a number of Packards "on the indexes of the Tennessee State Library and Archives website."
The Tennessee State Library & Archives lists four entries for the Packards.  The first of these is Noah S. Packard, with the record of his death found within the W. R. Cornelius Burial Records, noting his death in 1865 in Indiana, part of Company D, Regiment/Unit/Line 151. So, I dug a little further to learn more about this Noah Packard and T.E. Packard, who died the same year but in Wisconsin, and was in Company A and Regiment/Unit/Line 18.
Finding information about Noah was tough, because the only entry for a Noah, who died in 1865, was someone buried in Tennessee. For T.E. Packard, nothing turned up on Find A Grave either. I couldn't find any obits for either of them, unfortunately. There was just a bunch of false drops. Searches on Family Search were also fruitless, for both of these Packards.
The next person, chronologically, was Thomas Packard. He died in 1916, as noted in the Tennessee Death Records 1914-1933 (specifically vol. 30, record #363), in Knox County, Tennessee. No results could be found on Find A Grave, sadly. He also seemed strangely mysterious, like the other Packards I had mentioned, since I couldn't find anything on him either! I found two results for Thomas Packards, one who died in Lawrence, Tennessee and another who died in Chattanooga. Neither seemed to be the same as this man. Sadly, all that could be found was a "Thomas Parker" who died in 1916, no Thomas Packard...
Then there was Lethe Packard who died in 1928, whose record also could be found in the Tennessee Death Records 1914-1933 collection (specifically Record #: 22500), dying in Shelby County. There were no results whatsoever on newspapers.com when looking up his name. Results on Family Search seemed to lead to nothing until I stumbled upon a Tennessee Death certificate! [1] It named his parents and everything. What a great find! It could lead to further answers to who this man was.
Tumblr media
It showed his father was E.E. Packard, who was born in Georgia and his mother was Mary Bond, although her birthplace was not known.  Although his date of birth was wrong (it shouldn't have been 1928 but should have been 1872), it did note he was born in Arkansas and that he was single, even though he was age 56.
Until next time!

A/N: I mapped out this chapter and as I started writing, I realized I would have about 6,000 words so I just split it into two. Enjoy ;)

“F.R.I, activate Nightcap Protocol.” You instructed the AI with your arms crossed as you made your way to the couch.
Your windows glazed over, so no one could see in. Some privacy and security shields, if you will, to prevent the past from repeating itself. Like your true self, you were invisible to the outside world. Inside you didn’t have to hide or pretend; you were safe.
“You need to ice those...” Peter spoke, breaking the silence.
“What?” You asked gently, scrunching your brows together.
“Your knuckles, you need to ice them. They’re bleeding and they’re going to swell if you don’t ice them...“ Peter navigates through the new kitchen, wrapping some ice in a cloth before approaching you. He gently lays the makeshift ice pack onto them.
You look up to him with guilty eyes when you realize he’s still holding onto your hands.
“I don’t know what to say Peter, I thought I’d figure it out on the walk from the balcony to here, but I still don’t know what to say.” You hung your head again, your voice faltering.
“You don’t have to say anything.” Peter reassured you, taking a seat next to you.
You didn’t understand why he was being so kind to you, especially considering your last conversation with him. Your head had pushed him away, but your heart was grasping for anything left to hold onto.
“You deserve an explanation.” You admitted.
“I know why you did it, all of it. You don’t have to put yourself through this for me.” Peter tried to convince you, but you shook your head.
How could he be so understanding? How could you hurt him, and he still looks for a reason to redeem you? To excuse your actions? To find some greater meaning to all of it... the only conclusion you could think of was that he really didn’t want to let you go.
“I do Peter! Because if you get hurt or your identity is compromised, that’s on me!” You yelled, pushing the ice off your hands as you motioned between the two of you.
“Can’t you see? I never had a normal childhood and I can’t change that. But you still have that luxury. When you’re not swinging around Queens in a multi-million dollar suit, you can be normal. You can go out with friends, you can see a movie. Whatever normal people do; you can do that. Just because I’ll never get that chance doesn’t mean I’m gonna sit by and watch while it’s stolen from you.” You tried to explain.
“What if I don’t want to be normal?” Peter asked, but that wasn’t exactly what he meant.
What he wanted to say was how he would never truly be normal again after you. You had accepted him into your crazy life, and ruined him for the ‘normal world’. It was as if he’d experienced a touch of the heavens when he was with you, and he knew if he went back nothing could ever compare to the way you had made him feel.
“Trust me, you don’t want this.” You scoffed, motioning around you, implying the shit storm that has now become your life.
You were like a bad omen. Chaos followed behind you everywhere you went, and you were worried that you were going to be the reason someone got hurt. Seriously hurt. And you were not going to let that person be Peter Benjamin Parker.
“Keep that ice on, Y/N.” Peter said calmly.
“Fuck my knuckles, Peter!” You shouted, standing up off the couch.
“No! Alright because you are so worried about everyone around you that you won’t even take care of yourself!” Peter yelled back, standing to match you. His words shocked you, because deep down you knew he was right.
“This is bigger than me, Peter! This is bigger than both of us!” You raised your voice again.
“What are you talking about?” Peter shook his head in confusion, his tone was still argumentative. You realized you had dug yourself into a hole, and he wouldn’t rest, understandably, until he had answers.
You took a deep breath and a pause, sitting back down onto the arm of your couch.
“I was warned before the gala.” You confessed.
“What? Why didn’t you say anything?” Peter asked worriedly, moving to stand in front of you.
“I was still trying to figure it out. The mayor, he’s in deep. Some sort of illegal weapons dealings. I don’t know. But I know that the people he’s tangled up with aren’t afraid of collateral damage. What if they come for you, because of me? More people are going to get hurt if I don’t get to the bottom of this.” You tried to make him understand.
“What if it’s not your job to stop them?”
“What if I’m the only one who can? I can figure out what they’re doing from the inside.” You spoke, though you weren’t sure how convincing you sounded.
“From the inside? Oh, Thomas.” Peter took a step back and looked away from you.
“Yeah, Thomas.”
“So y’all are...?” Peter began to ask, but couldn’t bring himself to put it into words.
“No, no. It’s just- we have this agreement. Some outings for publicity, that kinda stuff. He gets to impress his dad and boost his poll numbers, and we move the public attention away from you... well that was my intention at least.” You explained, shaking your head at how tonight had gone.
“Yeah I saw the interview, it was-” Peter stopped, not knowing what word to best describe what he had witnessed.
“Brutal?” You offered.
“Yeah, something like that.” Peter gave you a sad smile, something to show you that he was sorry for the way it turned out. To a blind viewer, it really wasn’t that bad. Sure the questions were grilling, but you didn’t throw yourself under the bus or anything. You behaved and answered just as you were supposed to.
“I don’t know what was worse, the questions about you or the questions from Twitter.” You sighed, sliding off the edge of the couch into the plush cushions below.
“I liked the question about Thor, did he really say that?” Peter laughed, moving next to you once more. He was trying to get your mind off of what had happened.
“Clint convinced him that once a girl turns 15, and when they address you, it’s polite to reply with ‘Yas Queen’.” You laughed, a genuine laugh. It had been a while since you’d done that.
“So on my birthday, we had this huge party upstate. It was before Sokovia and everyone was still living in the compound. I came downstairs and Thor was the first one I ran into. I asked him if my dress looked okay, and you can imagine my shock when he replied. Everyone burst out laughing, Clint was in tears. I didn’t have the heart to tell him, he looked so pleased with himself.”
You smiled as you told Peter the story, lost in the memory. It was a simpler time, a more peaceful time. There was no fighting, no government intervention. What you would give to go back to those days.
“I still can’t believe you’re friends with all the Avengers.” Peter shook his head with a smile.
“Is that why you came here tonight, to talk to me about Thor?” You teased him with a raised brow, but you really were curious.
“Well no, I just... I saw you and you looked- wow I mean, wow. Then the questions and the, I mean you answered them perfectly but I could tell you were... I mean-” Peter began to shift around nervously in his seat. It was like when you two first met, he was shy and nervous. Not the Peter you’d grown to know- you knew that meant something was up.
“Spit it out bug boy.” You furrowed your brow, unsure of where he was going with this.
“Fuck, Y/N I missed you. Ok. You’re not making it easy for me to move on when you’re on my TV looking like that. I had to see you. I knew those questions affected you so I wanted to see if you were okay.” He confessed. You hoped your cheeks weren’t bright red right now. You didn’t think you’ve ever heard Peter curse, and he’d never talked about you in that way before.
“Alright, you’ve seen me. What was the next step in your plan tonight?” You inches closer to him, your heartbeat growing faster and faster. Hopefully he couldn’t hear it with his super senses.
“Hope you’d let me in.” He said slowly. His eyes were scanning over your face, like he was making a mental image to never forget this.
“Well I seem to have already done that, and next?” You spoke just as slowly, trying to calm your breathing... Were you nervous? You’ve certainly done this before, but why did this time feel different?
“This.” Peter spoke with some newfound confidence before his lips collided with yours.
You snaked your hand around the back of his neck, wanting to eliminate any distance between the two of you.
You knew why it was different this time- it was Peter. Things would always be different because of Peter. It was as if you had lived your whole life colorblind, and then you met him. He was the color, he was the life you were missing. You didn’t know much about destiny and fate and all that, but when you kissed Peter and he kissed you back, you saw it.
You saw the two of you together, growing old together, white picket fence and all. You saw a glimpse of a normal life, a happy life. He was your balance, the missing puzzle piece.
But deep down you knew, it could never be this easy, you couldn’t get to that point without struggles and heartbreak. But you also knew Peter was worth it, and whatever hardships you would have to overcome, you would do it.
You came from two different worlds, and the two wouldn’t meld together easily or quickly. It would take time for people to come around to the idea of it, but time was something you had plenty of.
Tonight would give you a chance, a chance at a proper goodbye. Not a real goodbye, but a goodbye for now. A goodbye to figure out all the crazy twists and turns that was your life. You both knew the timing just wasn’t right, but one day down the road everything may fall into place.
“Is this a good idea?” Peter pulls away hesitantly and asked.
“No.” You smiled and shook your head.
This time it was you that erased the empty space between your lips. You lifted your leg over Peter so that you were now straddling him. His hands found their way to your hips as yours trailed over his chest.
Time didn’t exist when your lips were intertwined. An hour could have passed, or a year. It was like you were stuck in an interdimensional time loop, and neither of you wanted it to stop.
When you finally came up for air, you froze for a second. You looked into Peter’s eyes, you memorised every detail of his face. Knowing it might be a while before the two of you can be together again like this, you didn’t want to take a second for granted.
Peter smiled up at you, and for the first time in forever, you felt seen. Truly seen. Not the tabloid version of you, not the majority shareholder business version of you, but the real you. Peter saw it, all of your flaws, and they didn’t matter. It was just the two of you, together in the eye of the storm.
“I have to be up in 5 hours, can Queens spare you for a night?” You raised your brow and smirked.
“They’ll just have to manage” Peter smirked as he lifted you from the couch and headed towards your bedroom. You were both laughing and utterly giddy. Two fools in love.
He gently threw you onto the bed before crawling over to you. You were smiling as his lips connected with his once more. In an attempt to draw him closer to you, your hand brushed over the spider on the front of his suit- releasing it.
You froze and muttered an apology, growing more and more distracted by the bare skin that was now exposed.
“Cat got your tongue?” Peter asked with a smirk, you must have been staring for a while.
“Hmm? No, uh, shit.” You muttered.
Peter Parker was like a drug, and oh boy were you an addict. You’d been doing well, 10 days sober. But you broke. Cracked at the first opportunity and let him back into your heart, and your apartment for that matter. But it was just one little cheat, right? That’s all. No one even had to know.
“Um, I’d offer you a change of clothes but I don’t have any of Steve’s laying around.” You tried to recover from your daze.
“We’ll have to figure something else out then, won’t we.” Peter spoke, connecting your lips again, and pulling the suit further down his chest.
“I suppose we will...” Your hand found some pooling fabric and aided in it’s removal, he was now just in his boxers.
“And if we’re playing fair.” You breathed heavily, trying to catch your breath after the lack of oxygen.
You untied that robe that you had wrapped around you, and threw the material onto the floor. You were on the edge of the bed, and quickly took the opportunity to stand back on the floor, pulling the tight fabric of your leggings from your body and sliding it down your thighs. As you stepped out of them, and stood tall with your shoulders back, your eyes connected with Peter’s. His grew wide, not with surprise, but desire. Standing before him in only a sports bra and your underwear, you didn’t feel exposed. You felt safe.
Peter now sat at the edge of the bed with his feet hanging off, hitting the floor. You moved to that you were standing between his legs. Your hand came to rest on the side of his face, wrapping around to the back of his neck. You placed a delicate kiss onto his lips, and it grew, blossomed into a passionate kind of kiss that you think only happens in the movies.
As Peter wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled you back onto the bed, lips never separating, he let out a noise between a growl and a moan.
You were seeing a side of Peter you never thought you would get to see, or never thought existed for that matter.
You two were inseparable. Even once the kiss was broken, you still couldn’t keep your hands off of eachother.
You now were snuggled into his side, silently tracing shapes over his chest, dragging your fingers over his muscles. He had his arms protectively wrapped around you, listening to the steady beat of your heart.
You were the first one to break the silence with something that had been weighing heavily on your mind for the last week.
“I'm sorry for how I acted at the party. I shouldn’t have drank that much, I hope I didn’t do anything to embarrass you.” You apologized.
“Embarrass me?” Peter pulled away slightly so that he could see your face. ”No, no Y/N I was the talk of the town all week. Flash hasn’t stopped talking about you. By the way, you’re a really cute drunk.”
“Oh, well I don’t know about that.” You smiled up at him.
“You shot finger guns at Ned.” He informed you and your eyes grew wide.
“No I didn’t oh my god.” You buried your head into his chest in embarrassment.
“Yes you did.” Peter laughed and you groaned.
When you unburied your head from his chest, and laid down onto his arm he asked you another question.
“Why do you have to be up so early tomorrow.” He asked, and if he hadn’t, you almost would have forgotten. Peter had a way of distracting you, and tonight surely more than ever.
“I have an interview with Vogue in the morning, well more of a meeting really, then an Elle video.” You informed him.
“What for?” He asked again.
“They want me on the cover of Vogue, lord knows why. And Elle is doing a closet and apartment tour for YouTube.” You rolled your eyes. You might not have known why Vogue would want you for their cover, but he sure did. You were gorgeous and brilliant, and he wished you could see what he saw.
“A closet tour, really? People care about that kind of thing?” He replied instead, noticing your eyeroll and general disapproval of the whole thing.
“So I’m told. I do have a vast shoe collection though.” You answered, looking towards your closet, that really could be classified as another whole room.
“I’m sure you do,” Peter laughed, “Aunt May said your shoes tonight were to die for.”
“Did she now? What size is she?” You asked.
“Um, I think an eight.” You made a mental note of that.
“Mh,” you groaned and burrowed back into Peter’s open arms, “I don’t want to wake up in 4 hours.”
“Then don’t.” Then don’t Peter chucked at your previous actions.
“I have to.” You groaned, your voice muffled due to your face being pressed against his body.
“Then sleep.” Peter suggested, teasing you.
“I don’t want to.” You whined.
“Well what else are you going to do for the next 4 hours then?” Peter retorted with a smile. You raised your head up again, resting it on his chest so your faces were mere inches apart. You looked up at him through your lashes before your lips curved into a smirk.
“I’m sure I can think of something.” You smiled, your lips finding their home, once more, attached to his.

[Fantasia Review] OUR HOUSE Manifests an Effective, Empathetic Ghost Story
Electro-Magnetic detectors, readers, and doo-dads have long been touted as tools to capture evidence of the paranormal. (Despite little evidence or – well, plain old science proving them as means to contact an alternate universe, life-force, what-have-you.. But that’s another article altogether.) Until now, we’ve pretty much settled for late-night reality shows following green night-vision cameras and narcissistic hosts shouting into the ether in the basement of an abandoned prison to get our ghostly electro-charge. That, or watching Bill Murray and crew vacuuming up a giant mischievous booger with a Proton Pack (TM).
Paranormal thriller Our House serves up a new version of this sciencey sounding theory, and offers a subtle, spooky coming-of-age ghost story along the way.
youtube
Our House is directed by Anthony Scott Burns (Holidays, “Father’s Day” Segment), from a screenplay by Nathan Parker, and based on the 2010 independent film Ghost from the Machine.
We are quickly introduced to a middle-income, nuclear family in a quiet residential neighbourhood, in an equally quiet town. Shot in Port Hope, Ontario (which you may be familiar with as the tree-lined streets and quaint downtown of Derry, Maine in Andy Muschietti’s It). We often peak down in bird’s-eye glances – catching the tall church on the hill, the shady trees with trunks wide-enough for a hiding behind in a game of Manhunt, and the mostly blue coastline of lake Ontario to the south.
It is easy to see that our hero, probably genius and electrical tinkerer Ethan (Thomas Mann), is a big fish in a small pond. After a quick debate from his parents, Ethan ditches family dinner in suburbia to sneak onto the college grounds for a little late-night experimenting alongside his friend and girlfriend, Hannah (Nicola Peltz). His invention, ELI (short for Electro-Magnetic-Induction), is designed to be a replacement to our current delivery system of electricity. Ethan’s hope is his machine will power the air itself, creating a wireless charge that will light up their test bulb, and then hopefully, the whole world.
They flip the machine on… and nothing happens.
Ethan cranks the juice, and still, the lightbulb stays dark. This shorts the power and sets off the school’s alarm system. But not before we catch a glimpse of a spooky, black mist manifesting inside the glass of the light bulb. With the late-night security now running through the halls, our ragtag scientists must put ELI‘s trial run on pause for another night.
But when Ethan gets a call that his parents have been in a tragic accident, another night doesn’t come. His life is turned upside down as he becomes the primary caregiver for his young sister Becca (Kate Moyer), and pre-teen brother Matt (Percy Hynes White). College is put on the backburner, and so are the family dishes. ELI collects dust in the garage.. until an opportune moment allows Ethan to delve back into his obsession.
Turning the machine back on, it works – only instead of amplifying electricity, ELI seems to be strengthening something else hanging out on the electro-magnetic plane. Thus ensues a slow, subtle, and eerily effective trip into the paranormal. Ethan’s house becomes home to a paranormal entity, amplified by ELI. One that prefers to go by the name of Mom and Dad.
Though set in present day, Our House touches on that 80’s aesthetic and nostalgic wave genre audiences have been surfing since Netflix’s breakout hit Stranger Things. With plenty of floral patterns, vinyl records, a retro minivan, and a subtly synthy score – Our House is able to tap into that aesthetic without giving us a sore tooth. The 80’s nostalgia train is about ready to leave the station, but Anthony Scott Burns’ delicate hand steers us far enough away from gimmick and parody to create a solidly stylized mood and tone.
“Our House is able to maneuver effective scares and tension into its subtle tapestry.”
Despite its PG13 rating (for some reason a cringeworthy word to much of the horror community), Our House is able to maneuver effective scares and tension into its subtle tapestry. We spend much of the film empathizing with our orphaned leads as they learn their new dynamic as a family. All the while, the tension of what ELI, often left whirring unattended in the garage, could really be doing. Are the manifestations really as kind as they seem? Why do they seem so keen on the machine being stronger? Who is this Alice girl that Becca has begun talking to?
Our House’s only detriment is that it spends too much of the run-time in the thick of family turmoil. Though the audience’s emotional connection to the family is well earned (100% in part because of the dynamite portrayals from the film’s young cast and probably my favorite moments), the climax and explanation behind the paranormal experiences seem a bit rushed. Our ghosts never get to fully manifest as villains. Rather they remain to be spooky, smokey apparitions that one can vanquish with the flip of a switch. Their scares are effective when they come, but disappear into the next scene, not to be referred to, referenced from, or a hindrance from pressing on with ELI.
Our House will no doubt be lumped in under the growing Stranger Things resurgence – nestled comfortably between Super Dark Times and Summer of ’84. Horror audiences, though often deterred by PG13 ratings, will fall in love with this truly lovable family and the ghost story they accidentally conjured.
3.5/4 eberts
Our House celebrated its world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal on July 22nd. The film lands on VOD in Canada and the US on July 27th from Elevation Pictures and IFC Midnight.

Week 2 Fantasy Pickups: Priority waiver wire adds to boost your rosters
It is by no means too early to enhance a crew, folks. Profitable your fantasy league goes to require a good quantity of roster turnover. Every week all through the common season, we provide a gaggle of precedence pickups prematurely of waiver deadlines. Each participant listed right here is accessible in a majority of Yahoo leagues. Let’s add…
Operating backs to focus on on waiver wire
Coming into the yr, Hines had already established himself as one of many league’s most dependable backfield receiving choices. He delivered 107 receptions on 139 targets over his first two professional seasons. On Sunday, he added one other eight catches to that profession whole. Hines completed with 45 receiving yards and one rating in opposition to the Jaguars, including seven carries for 28 yards and one other spike. He was clearly a giant a part of the red-zone plan for the Colts…
Marlon Mack went down with a torn Achilles harm within the loss at Jacksonville, a brutal break for a top quality participant. In his absence, Hines cut up snaps evenly with completely hyped rookie Jonathan Taylor, who managed to achieve 89 scrimmage yards himself. These two complement one another extraordinarily nicely, so do not anticipate Hines to be utterly overtaken by Taylor. Philip Rivers has by no means didn’t feed targets to his operating backs. Do not be stunned if Hines manages to catch 70-plus passes within the yr forward. If he is getting 5-Eight carries every week behind the mastodons on the Colts’ O-line, that is a pleasant bonus.
Beneficial waiver provide, assuming $100 funds: $15
You possibly can’t say we did not inform you Brown had a shot at an enormous opening week workload. He was a featured title in final week’s pickups piece and he exceeded expectations. Brown carried 18 occasions for 79 yards and two spikes on Sunday evening, plus he caught three passes for an additional 31 yards. The Rams have all the time favored him as a goal-line runner — he dealt with eight carries contained in the 5-yard line final season — and he made essentially the most of his alternatives in opposition to the Cowboys. Cam Akers noticed 15 touches within the win in opposition to Dallas, which is promising, although he gained solely 43 whole yards.
For now, Brown is the clear head of the Rams’ backfield committee. If you happen to have been a ZeroRB drafter, you gotta bounce on Brown whereas he is nonetheless broadly out there. This can function final name.
Supply: $16
Austin Ekeler is the unmatched featured again for the Chargers, simply to be clear. Ekeler dealt with 20 touches on Sunday in opposition to Cincinnati, in a recreation that neither crew deserved to win (however one by chance did).
Kelley, nonetheless, appeared to settle the query of which again occupies the second spot on the depth chart. The rookie dealt with 12 carries, gaining 60 yards and scoring on a nifty goal-to-go plunge. Justin Jackson solely ran the ball twice, exiting with a quad harm. After Sunday’s spectacular debut, Kelley might very nicely be taking a look at double-digit weekly touches. He is a robust runner coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons at UCLA, constructed to win in short-yardage. Positively flex-worthy.
Supply: $8
Nicely, rattling. AP can nonetheless hit a speeding lane and embarrass would-be tacklers, even at 35 years previous. He simply arrived in Detroit just a few days in the past, however he is already claimed the highest spot within the Lions’ speeding hierarchy. Peterson produced 114 whole yards on 17 touches on Sunday, averaging a wholesome 6.6 yards per carry. Rookie D’Andre Swift managed to ship a 1-yard first-half landing, however he additionally had a crushing drop on a possible late game-winning rating. Peterson was lots efficient for Washington final season, gaining 1,040 scrimmage yards on 228 touches in a largely depressing offense. He is actually value a flier in Detroit.
Supply: $11
Extra RBs so as to add: Jerick McKinnon (nice to see him again within the recreation, with a rotational position in an awesome speeding offense), Alexander Mattison (gained 80 whole yards on 10 touches in opposition to the Pack), Peyton Barber (brutally inefficient in opposition to Philly, carrying 17 occasions for simply 29 yards, however he stumbled into the end-zone twice), Chase Edmonds (he noticed 5 targets and 6 carries, plus he made a home name in Arizona’s shock win at Levi’s Stadium).
Story continues
Extensive receivers and tight ends to focus on on the wire
Robby Anderson, Carolina Panthers (31%)
A lot for that speaking level about Teddy Bridgewater refusing to take deep pictures…
Carolina put up 30 factors in a loss to the Raiders on Sunday, and Bridgewater wasn’t precisely hyper-conservative. It is just one recreation (in opposition to a sketchy protection), however we will nonetheless really feel a complete lot higher in regards to the Teddy-Robby connection. Anderson completed with 115 receiving yards and a landing on six catches, plus he hauled in a 2-point conversion. He stays one of many league’s most harmful deep threats and game-flow will favor him as a rule. His roster-percentage is curiously low, contemplating his historical past of fantasy usefulness.
Supply: $14
Laviska Shenault Jr., Jacksonville Jaguars (12%)
Shenault entered the NFL as a flexible, high-ceiling prospect coming off an up-and-down collegiate profession at Colorado. He was terrific as a sophomore, scoring six touchdowns as a receiver and 5 as a runner, hauling in 86 balls for 1,011 yards. He took a backward step final season, however there is no denying his upside. We heard the Jaguars have been getting artistic with Shenault in camp, then he made loads of noise within the crew’s opener…
Gardner Minshew’s 19 completions went to 10 totally different receivers on Sunday, so no member of the receiving corps had an enormous day. Shenault actually backed up his preseason hype, nonetheless, and he hardly ever got here off the sphere. The rookie calls for consideration.
Supply: $7
Logan Thomas, Washington F.T. (2%)
Thomas entered the common season with sleeper enchantment following a buzzy camp and he actually did not disappoint within the opener. He caught 4 passes on eight targets in Sunday’s win over the Eagles, with a 6-yard landing included. Not too shabby for a former faculty QB who’s made the swap to tight finish. Loads of targets are up for grabs this season in Washington, because the crew does not actually have a longtime No. 2 receiver behind Terry McLaurin. It is hardly outrageous to think about Thomas ending a wholesome season among the many top-10 at his place in whole possibilities. He is a precedence for fantasy managers who simply misplaced Blake Jarwin to harm.
Supply: $5
Different notable WR/TE choices: Eric Ebron (buzz retains rising about his potential red-zone position), Russell Gage (he noticed a dozen targets within the opener, one of many highest totals within the league), Parris Campbell (one other participant we’ve completely hyped who noticed a wholesome opening week workload), Jalen Reagor (returned from harm and made his presence felt early), Allen Lazard (hauled in all 4 of his targets within the win at Minnesota, with a TD included), Preston Williams (he had a quiet opener, however he noticed seven targets. Additionally, the crew will desperately want him if DeVante Parker’s hamstring harm is important).
Quarterbacks so as to add
Gardner Minshew II, Jacksonville Jaguars (25%)
We knew the setup was going to be pleasant for Minshew in 2020, however I am unsure anybody might have forecast his opening week stat line: 19-for-20, 173 yards, three TDs. He by some means related with 10 totally different receivers on solely 20 makes an attempt. If you happen to’d rostered the Indianapolis protection, trying to stream in opposition to the Jaguars, um … whoops. Gotta take the L on that one. When a quarterback has extra landing passes than incompletions, fantasy managers ought to most likely take an curiosity. Minshew could have a gunslinger aesthetic, however he hasn’t been notably reckless since taking up in Jacksonville; he solely threw six interceptions final season in 470 makes an attempt. His schedule is a present within the weeks forward: at Ten, Mia, at Cin, at Hou, Det. There’s an excellent likelihood Minshew will ship a collection of high quality fantasy performances.
Supply: $4
Additionally addable at QB: Teddy Bridgewater (as a result of it feels as if each week is gonna be a high-scoring affair for Carolina), Mitchell Trubisky (by some means, in a recreation during which he was typically hilariously dangerous, he completed with 242 yards and three TDs. His upcoming schedule is a dream for fantasy functions, for no matter it’s value: NYG, at Atl, Ind).
Protection to think about through the wire
Washington (5%)
Soccer Crew is heading to Arizona in Week 2 for a matchup of undefeated soccer groups. <— That was a enjoyable sentence to write down. Each defenses must be in your radar for streaming functions. Washington’s D/ST occurs to be coming off an enormous fantasy week, having sacked Carson Wentz eight occasions and forcing three takeaways. Chase Younger, predictably, was an issue, a destroyer of game-plans. Washington positive looks as if a crew that is going to specialize within the very issues that feed fantasy scoring.
Supply: $1
Observe the Yahoo fantasy crew on Twitter: Andy Behrens, Dalton Del Don, Matt Harmon, Liz Loza, Scott Pianowski and Tank Williams.

“Dope A-F” - 5/8-5/13 - “Blackstone, Apartment Show, Mother’s Day, and A 16 yo POS”
I am the king of catch up. A real Heinz boy. It is time to get these shows started. It was a wild and wacky week of comedy. I had some highs and lows! So let’s do it!
5/8
I was pretty excited but also nervous for this show. Liz Carr had booked me to headline her new room in Blackstone (which is about 20 minutes from where I went to hs). I did a ton of posting and tried to get people out to The Brew House.
People are always like post when you are close. So I did. I posted in my hs alumni group, and posted on fb a ton. I sent over 400 event invites, and got absolutely zero response from it. I get it. It is tough to come out, but I was really hoping I could at least be a draw this close to my hometown.
I get to the show early and walk around downtown Blackstone. I take some pictures and watch cops low-key harass a dude. This dude was parked where he shouldn’t have been parked and some redneck piece of shit called the cops on him. So this dude had like two or three cops surrounding him, and it was ridiculous.
I walked back to the venue and most of the people on the show pulled up. Alida Harper, Liz, Mu, and Richard Woody. This was the first I’d seen Richard in a while. He got added to the show last minute, and it was going to be fun to watch him work. Alida was going to be hosting and I think it was definitely one of her first hosting spots.
We go in and they have a huge banner with everyone’s face on it.  There is a crowd there, but they all seem to be pretty disinterested in comedy. The vibe in the room is that they would have been at that bar whether comedy was happening or not. The staff was sweet and the venue was nice, but I had the feeling it was going to be a shit show. Davine Ker who is featuring and down from NOVA also shows up.
I was pretty bummed, because I was like legit nobody came from back home. I felt like I had let Liz down by not being able to bring anyone out. Then someone came up and tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around and it was one of my really good friends from hs! She told me that her and another great friend from back home had come to check it out. So I go talk to them for a little bit before the show starts. They are seated up front and to the side, and I now feel way better about the show.
The show starts and Alida Harper gets up. She has an ok set. You could tell this was one of the first sets she has done where the audience was a little rowdy. They were talking, and interjecting. They weren’t being rude, or trying to ruin the show. They were having fun, but if you aren’t used to that it can be very distracting. She finishes up and gets some good laughs. She then brings Liz up.
Liz goes up and the crowd is still a little rowdy. She gets some good laughs as well. There is two little kids in the audience, but this definitely isn’t a clean show. She keeps the energy going and the show seems to be building. I can tell Richard is nervous, but he has his set figured out and is ready to go.
Richard goes up next and he starts pretty strong. He talks about going to Longwood, and a few other things. The audience digs him, but he tries longer stories and new stuff towards the end and their attention span is short. They enjoy it, but they definitely needed you to hold their attention.
Next up was Mu and he had the best set so far. He was super high energy, and had them laughing. He was the first to address the baby in the room, and he addressed being scared being the only black guy. He had a solid set, but he came in short on his time. He did about 7 minutes instead of 10, but I get why. He got a huge laugh, and it felt like it was the right time to get off.  Super dope set.
Then Davine went up and did about 15 minutes. They liked her as well. She was pretty dirty, and that got their attention. She did pretty well for the whole time, but I could tell people were a little tired and I knew I was going to have to work my ass off.  I wanted to bring it, and have the best set. I had friends there, and I was headlining. I need to be able to show why.
I go up and go right into crowd work. I want to wake these people up. it turns out about 75% of the audience is military. So I joke about that, and the kid that is there. It is working really well. I get them really on a roll for about the first 15 to 20 of my set. I have stuff that is hitting ridiculously hard. Every bit of crowd work is working. I am busting balls, and getting the guys all the way in the back involved. I involve the staff, and have a hot set. I use the last 10 to work out some actual material and it goes well. I close super strong, and I feel great. I’d give my set an A-. I don’t think I could have done much better than I did here.
I get off the stage and a bunch of the dudes ask for my social media info, and ask for some stickers. I don’t know if anyone of them will follow through, but they had so much nice stuff to say it meant a lot. I talked to my friends a bit more, and took some pictures. After saying my goodbyes everybody headed out. I drive home and pass out immediately.
5/9
This is a fun night. I’ve got a lot of open mics to get to. I love a three mic night.
My first stop is The Camel. Jameson is hosting and the headliners are Kat Malone and James Muñoz. I go right after work and get as much writing done as I humanly can. I am trying to work out and change the joke the girl said I took from Twitter. So I dropped the hack intro and changed it completely.
It is a lighter crowd, but they seem fun. There are a few comics there but honestly not a ton. Lot’s of newer people. Anne Meng is there and we have a good time catching up and busting balls. I let Jameson use my clamp light so we aren’t so backlit from the sunlight that you can’t see the performers face. Bert Martling and John Thomas show up as well.
Jameson starts the show and let’s Will Minor go up to get it rolling. After him James goes up. He has a good set. He gets a little wild and has nice involved heckler. His jokes are working and he takes his shirt off halfway through. It was really fun to watch.
Kat Malone then went up and had one of the better sets I’ve seen her have. I haven’t seen her out much at the open mics, but she was really able to connect with the crowd and get them on her level. I definitely dug it.
After Kat it was my turn. This was a good first set of the night. I got some quality laughs and was able to get the wording down a little more on a few of my jokes. I felt like people were entertained, and even if they didn’t love a joke they weren’t rude. I got a lot out of this. It was very productive. I’d give it a solid C. I could have done better, but I learned a lot.
I stuck around the rest of the show and watched. Some people did pretty well, and all in all it was a solid mic. After packing my stuff up I told Jameson to put me on the list for Garden Grove. I headed over there to get ready for the next set.
I get there and I am the first comic on the scene. I set my stuff up and when I turn around other comics have already started to show up. Mike Engle, Jesse Pearlstein and his gf (Hallie), John Thomas, Bert Martling, Jack Parker, and more.
The lineup is super light for this show as well. I requested to go early so I could get to the last mic. He makes Mike and I play Rock, Paper, Scissors to see who has to go first. I win so Mike goes first.
Jameson starts the show and has an ok set, he then brings Mike up and he gets some good pops. He tries some new stuff out, but it doesn’t hit the way he wants to, but it does get some laughs. He had a solid set. Then it is my turn.
I go up and try to get everyone’s attention. The people there are into it, but their attention span is a little short. I get them up top and then start hitting them with my material. It is a super solid set. The jokes from earlier work better here, and I get some sizable pops. I feel very good about this set and I’d give it a B-. I still stumble on some of the newer stuff, but the jokes are getting better.
I get off stage and grab my stuff. I watch one or two more sets and then head over to Penny Lane to do my final set of the night. I head straight over and walk upstairs. I see that there is a small audience, but only three comics are there. It is Jack Parker, Will Minor, Brian Mann (hosting), and myself.
We are waiting for more people to show up. So Brian goes downstairs for a smoke and I join him. We talk about who his favorite comics are, and his time in Chicago. It was a really good and fun conversation. We bust balls and talk about the local scene before heading back upstairs to get it started.
He decides to start in about ten minutes and he has me up third in case more comics don’t show up and I have to just keep stretching. Right when he tells me this more comics show up. Stella, Rebecca Hyman, another new girl named Taylor, Moe, and some others all show up. Rebecca and I shoot the shit and tease each other while playing darts. It was a super fun hang before the show started.
The show finally gets going and Brian opens it up. He gets a little weird, but the small crowd is definitely vibing with what is going on. I am super excited for this set. Will and Jack both have pretty good sets. They get some good laughs, and I am ready to roll.
I go up and have a super hot set. It is definitely my best set of the night. My new stuff is working, and I get some really big laughs. I do some teaching material and some of my newer stuff, and it is really connecting. I’d give this set a B+/A-. I needed this and it felt like the culmination of an entire night’s work.
After my set I chill for a while and watch a few more sets. A few other people go and don’t really connect, while a few really do and get some good pops. Overall though I feel great about how I did for the room. I watch the new girls set and then say goodbye. I talk to Stella for a bit about her set, and then head to my car to head home. This was an amazing day of comedy.
5/10
Brock Snyder had hit me up earlier in the week to book me on an apartment show in Richmond. I was stoked even though he did not give me much information about it.
I got off work a little early due to teacher appreciation week so I went to the mall and got a new outfit. I got some dope Vans and an odd future jacket. I was beyond ready for this show.
I headed downtown to the venue and waited to be let in. It was at First National apartments downtown. I go downstairs and Brock is there setting up. The lineup for the show should be fun.
Apparently all the comics from DC had gone to King’s Dominion during the day. Brock said he got escorted out by a plain clothe’s cop because he took his phone out of his pocket as a prank. Hearing the story gave me anxiety. But the thought of a comic being escorted out of a theme park is amazing.
Martin Phillips, Jelani Wills, Lee Loy, Liz Carr (with her new boo), and Sean Savoy were all on the lineup. Along with a couple comics I’ve never met before and didn’t get their names before the show. Martin and I talked about what happened with his radio show (crazy story), and just have a good time catching up.
The turnout is a little light, but it seems like it might be a pretty fun time. I think there was maybe 7 or 8 people there who weren’t with the comics, and another 5 or 6 that worked there. I didn’t know how the show was going to go, but I was ready for it.
Brock went up first to get the show rolling. They had a tight vibe, but they weren’t rude or mean. A female comic I didn’t know went up and she did pretty well too. She ended her set by giving sincere compliments which was interesting to see. Jelani then went and had a pretty good set. He got a few good pops, and kept their attention. Martin went up and did well too.
I went up soon after this and I had the definition of an ok set. I tried to get the room to liven up and talked about how I loved performing somewhere I couldn’t afford to live. everybody seemed super up tight, but I kept going anyway. Some of my stuff worked, but I really wanted to kill (which none of us did). I wanted to break through and was unable to. I closed ok and I’d give this set a C-. This was my first apartment show, and I think that I will be able to better adjust next time.
Liz, Loy, and Sean all had solid sets after that. They got similar responses. The audience seemed to dig the whole show, but they just weren’t huge laughers. The lights also were up because the room had a motion sensor so it was impossible to properly light the performance area.
The weirdest thing was everybody was working pretty clean. There were kids there, and honestly didn't seem like a crowd that wanted something super dirty. The next to last comic went up and said the F word a few times and it legit was kind of jarring. Like no one expected it and the audience didn’t seem to vibe with it at all. He got some laughs in his set, but it was so weird going an entire night hearing clean stuff and then that word hit like a bomb.
After the show I said thank you and goodbye to Brock. I had a mic at Slyderz a few blocks away I desperately wanted to get to. I sprinted about 8 blocks to get there. I walk in and there is no comics there. Just a bunch of weirdos setting up DJ equipment and doing art. I called the host Mu and he said it was cancelled. So I walked back to my car ready to head home.
I was pretty down in the dumps. I don’t know I felt shitty about my set, and I didn’t get to do another one. As I was getting in my car someone yells at me. I turn around and it is a lady from the show. She said some nice things to me and followed me on IG. So this was a nice consolation prize for how I felt. I said bye and headed home
5/11
This was a day I had no shows scheduled. I was going to a wedding, and then heading back to town to watch Detective Pikachu with my family. After the wedding I found out that an open mic was going on at Intermission Beer Company and it was being hosted by Liz Carr.
I hit her up and asked if I could go up when I got there. She told me she’d try to keep the show going. I headed straight to the venue as soon as I could leave the wedding. I run in and there is one comic before me and I am closing it out.
My buddy John Marg is on stage and he is having a good set. He has a heckler but the dude is just having fun. You can’t be mean to him to shut him up because you’d lose the entire audience. John gets off stage, and Liz brings me up.
I address the dude talking a lot and make a few jokes. He loves the attention. I have a response to everything he has to say. I spend the first half of my set addressing the audience to get them quiet and ready to go. I then use the last half to try out some jokes. They go pretty well. I feel awesome about this last minute set. Some stuff didn’t work, but the stuff that did kind of killed for the room. I’d give my set a B-.
I say bye and head to Detective Pikachu. This was a super fun and jam packed day. I then head home and pass out!
5/12
I go to brunch with my mom, dad, and brother for Mother’s Day. I then go take a nap before my show.  I got a great nap in and then drove to the venue.
I was going to be a part of the Premier Entertainment comedy show put on by Patrick Mamou. I was referred to him by Micah “Bamm Bamm” White. It was going to be at the Hof Garden and I was super excited. This was the gig I got while outside on the phone at Castleburg.
I get to the venue and Mike Jay is already at the show. Patrick introduces himself to me. He shows me to the green room and then Mike and I chill. This is probably the most Mike and I have ever talked. There’s always been a respect there, but never a lot of conversation. We had a good talk about comedy, and what we need to do to make the next step. We talked about shows we had been on lately, and what we had coming up. It was a good talk.
After this Micah showed up. He was going to be the host. We talked the NBA for about 30 minutes or so. Our favorite players, the goat, and who we would draft. It was a super great time. We did some interview stuff for the camera crew that Patrick had for the show. He was doing a dope job of really making this a fun and insane show.
I went to check the crowd right before we started and it was a good crowd. Maybe 30 or so people. In that size room I knew we were about to have a good time. So the show starts a little after 7 and Bamm goes up and has a hot opening set. Then Mike Jay goes and has one of the better sets I have seen him have. All of his jokes are hitting, and the show keeps getting. better. During this time Antoine Scott the headliner gets there, and we talk about comedy.
Bamm goes back up and does a little more time before bringing me up. I have a super hot set. I feel really good about it. I just go into crowd work and talk to this one older dude that had found the show on his way home to Boston with his wife. I riff on how I am going to use him to talk shit to my friends who live a minute away and couldn’t make it out. I talk to all the mother’s there and hit on them a bit. I talk to the couples and ask how they met and had a really good interaction with a dude who has been with his wife ten years and she just got a job where he works. If was a super fun set. Then I closed with about 10 minutes of material. The crowd work killed harder, but I was super proud of the set. I’d give it a B+/A-.
I get off stage and talk to Antoine and Mikey while Bamm is up doing some more material. We are talking the business of comedy, and what it takes to work a bunch of different rooms. I talk about being one of the only white comics who is consistently in the black rooms, and Antoine talks about his first time hosting for an all white crowd. It is good to talk to some other comics that view versatility as such as important skill. Then Antoine goes up and murders for 30 minutes. I mean kills. He brought the house down. It is so dope that these sets will be on video because they’re all amazing.
After the show I get a bunch of followers on Ig, and a bunch of people want pictures. It definitely feels good to have people want to follow me. It makes me feel like I have a product worth putting out there. This is the dream. After I get some pics I say goodbye and then go watch Game of Thrones before passing out!
5/13
I was so excited to go to The Southern. The last Monday the mic was cancelled so I was stoked to see my friends. I started to not feel well while at work, but I refused to let that get between me and comedy.
I get to the mic and there is no comics there other than Paige. I talk to Angel, Danny, and Paige. Paige shows me this new thing he got (not at privilege to say), and we make fun of that for a while. Heather Kilburn and JR get there as well. Then Chris shows up and we set up the PA. Some more people come in. They look younger and a few of them know Chris. They sign a couple of their friend’s up. As soon as Alex gets there we head over to Jack Brown’s to get a bite to eat.
After eating we head back over and the mic had just started. There isn’t a lot of people here. This is going to be a brutal mic. I am up 11th and then at the last minute I got bumped for two comics coming from out of town.
After Chris does his opening set we all start to piggy back. This is one of the most brutal mics of all time. I mean everyone is bombing. It is a shit show. Each coming going up and just eating a dong.
Paige goes up fifth and he does not enjoy his set at all. He looks miserable but he gets thorough it and does his time. Kristina Montouri goes up and just tries to do some crowd work and see if any bits pop up and legit nothing is working.
The stage is cold all night. I go up after a newer lady who ran the light and bombed her ass off. She then almost forgot to bring me up. I was like I am miserable, but it is my time to go. Before I go up Alex asked me what I was going to work on and I riffed this thing about fake vomiting and raping dogs. It made him fall on the floor. Legit it made me so happy. I knew this set was going to suck all the good feelings from this away from me, but so glad I make someone laugh.
I go up and it sucks. I try newer stuff and I am getting small laughs and chuckles from everybody. Like it is ok. After about three minutes I see a dude in the front who seems sad. So I playfully riff with him about why is he sad. I want to make him have a good time.  He says I suck and I am not good at comedy. He said my time is up. So I just start riffing that he is lying and that he is crying. I keep asking him why he is crying. I hate to see him this way. Like tears aren’t the answer. This makes his friends laugh, and he is still shitting on me. I keep going in and saying your friends are laughing. You seem mad. Let’s have fun.
I am legit super close to freaking losing it. This dude is obviously super young. Like he has to be in hs. He is being a piece of shit, but if I snap I lose. So I just keep teasing him. I ask if he is doing comedy and I tell him I can’t wait for him and his friends to go up and I am going to sit in the front row and cry just like he is. I’m going to wear my hoodie as tight as him to squeeze the tears out of my little cheeks. I FNALLY GOT HIM TO LAUGH ON THAT ONE! I then quickly tease a bit more and get off stage. I won because he laughed, but it felt miserable. I’d give this set an F. It was quitting fuel and hurt to do.
I get off stage, and talk in the corner about it. Apparently he is like 16. He almost got 3 years of pent up teaching rage unleashed on him. I don’t like the energy in the room so I grab my stuff and leave. Apparently the rest of the night was shit as well. That dude did like 2 minutes and got no laughs and that made me happy. I finally got home and passed out. Ready for the rest of the week.
Ooo weeee! That is it laydees! I am caught up. I had off on Tuesday! So we will be back with today’s shows tomorrow. I love you all so much and thank you for following and reading. You baybees are all a blessing! xoxoxo and see ya next time.

Massive storm system spawns tornado in Arkansas, blizzard in Plains
MINNEAPOLIS — A potent spring storm system that’s expected to persist through the weekend raked across the Midwest Friday, spawning at least one tornado in Arkansas as blizzard conditions blanketed much of the Northern Plains. Portions of Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan could see close to a foot of snow, the National Weather Service said.
A tornado ripped through the tiny Ozark Mountain town of Mountainburg, Arkansas, injuring at least four people and causing widespread damage Friday afternoon.
Crawford County Emergency Management Director Brad Thomas said there were at least three entrapments following the twister. He said he did not know the condition of the four people hospitalized.
Twitter / NWS
Video from the scene showed uprooted trees, overturned cards, damaged buildings and downed power lines.
The huge storm, packing enough energy to cause widespread disruption, isn’t unprecedented for April, said Jake Beitlich, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
"We do get pretty powerful systems coming throughout the Midwest, and on the cold side we do get snow. And this one is particularly strong. So we do have a lot of moisture with it, and a lot of energy," Beitlich said. "Over the next 24 hours cold air is going to get wrapped into this system and we’re going to see a band of heavy snow develop from southwestern Minnesota through northern Wisconsin. Also we’re going to have really strong winds, especially in western Minnesota."
The largest April snow event in Minnesota’s recorded history was 13.6 inches on April 14, 1983, CBS Minnesota reports. This storm could top that.
Blizzard warnings stretched from northern Kansas across most of Nebraska and South Dakota into southwestern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa, with winter storm warnings and watches covering most of the rest of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Heavy snow already blanketed parts of western Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota by early afternoon Friday, closing major highways in South Dakota and many roads and highways in western Nebraska – including a 200-mile stretch of cross-country thoroughfare Interstate 80 from North Platte west to the Wyoming border.
A road conditions report said most roads in the Nebraska Panhandle to east of Valentine in the northern part of the state were impassable because of heavy snow cover.
The snow also led officials to shut down the Sioux Falls, South Dakota, airport Friday afternoon through Saturday night.
Snow, freezing rain and high winds were expected through Saturday night, with heavy ice accumulations in parts of Michigan through Sunday morning.
A swath of southern Minnesota, including Minneapolis though northern Wisconsin, was expected to get 8 to 12 inches of snow or more. Parts of northern Nebraska could get up to 18 inches, with up to 12 inches in northwestern Iowa. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph will make travel hazardous.
The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, had issued tornado watches Friday for eastern Texas and western Louisiana, moving up through eastern Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas and into Missouri and Iowa. The weather service also warned of the potential for strong thunderstorms, large hail and damaging winds for Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and eastern portions of Texas.
In Conway, Arkansas, strong winds caused damage at several buildings at the University of Central Arkansas on Friday. The school said on its Facebook page that students were evacuated from an all-female freshman dormitory after its roof was damaged. No injuries were reported.
In Mountain Home in northern Arkansas, authorities evacuated a nursing home after its roof was severely damaged by heavy winds. Police said no injuries were reported.
The threat of severe weather prompted officials with the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans to cancel all of Saturday’s events, held outdoors across 23 stages scattered throughout the historic neighborhood. Organizers said the festival will reopen for its final day on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Forecasters said Alabama was also at risk for a weekend of severe weather, with the National Weather Service predicting storms beginning over north Alabama early Saturday will create a threat of winds up to 60 mph and tornadoes through Sunday.
The Storm Prediction Center said there’s an enhanced risk of bad weather in an area that includes Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile, and that Montgomery is on the fringe of the risk area.
Severe thunderstorms also popped up to the north Friday morning in parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota and South Dakota. Golf ball-sized hail fell Friday morning in parts of southwestern Wisconsin, covering the ground like snow in Richland Center and Gays Mills. Large hail also fell in Parker in southeastern South Dakota while pea-sized hail fell in nearby Sioux Falls.
"That that just kind of again speaks to how strong the system is, where you’re going to get a lot of snow on the cold side, and severe thunderstorms in the warm part of the storm," Beitlich said.
In South Dakota, where a blizzard warning covered much of the state, authorities issued no-travel advisories for many highways and closed much of Interstate 90 in the western half of the state. Gov. Dennis Daugaard closed state government offices in 32 counties ahead the approaching blizzard. Dozens of school districts canceled classes ahead of snow accumulation expected to reach as much as 18 inches in some areas. Rapid City had already received 5.5 inches by 10 a.m.
Dangerous fire weather conditions in Oklahoma contributed to wildfires that forced hundreds of people to evacuate their homes near Woodward, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) northeast of Oklahoma City. Emergency crews in western Texas were also battling wildfires amid forecasts of extreme fire danger.

This may be a very short wrap up as, to be honest, I have done nothing interesting and, as I write this, I feel like poop. So much so I have just had to delete and re-write write four times to get it right …
This week I have mainly, been grumpy, been very, very annoyed and even more grumpy, worked, which makes me even more grumpy and seem to be developing a cold or at very least a sore throat so you can imagine how that makes me feel. I have fought with my router, had to move it to reconnect my media services which annoyed me greatly as it’s been in teh sme spot for years and worked fine. I also fought with the desire to say stuff my diet and eat this little chap.
He has sat on my desk since early December and followers of my Twitter feed and FB friends will know he came close to getting punched out at one point as he looked so flipping smug. He did, however, survive the week … You’ll get nothing useful from trying to enlarge the image by the way. The flags are depot visits which are overdue and he paper is my next Dentist appointment. More reasons to be grumpy…
I have to say that this has been one of those weeks in which I have had to think long and hard about whether I want to continue this blogging malarkey. It is a lot of pressure at times and often I wonder if anything is really worth it. This isn’t a pity post so I don’t want comments about how I should stick with it etc … If I do I do, if I don’t that will be my choice. I’m not fishing for sympathy votes, no private messages asking me what is wrong. Those that know me well know why and least said soonest mended on that front. Things may change. They may not. I have blog tours lined up for two months so you’re stuck with me that long at least. After that … who knows.
Told you I was grumpy.
Aside from being grumpy, as is the norm I read a few books, bought a few books, received a book through the post and got some books off Netgalley. Shocker I know. Book post wise I received one arc – a lovely copy of Thomas Enger’s Killed which I am also quoted in, and my signed copy of On The Bright Side by Hendrik Groen. Some less grumpy moments there.
Netgalley wise, given the size of my considerable pile, I have been a fool. Good books though … The Cliff House by Amanda Jennings; The Abandoned by Sharon Thompson; Past Echoes by Graham Smith; Little Liar by Clare Boyd and The Missing Child by Alison James.
Books I ordered include: Truth and Lies by Caroline Mitchell; The Chalk Man by CJ Tudor; The Old You by Louise Voss; and Assassins Retribution by Rachel Amphlett.
Reading wise, I have been fortunate. No books to make me grumpy.
Books I have read:
The Feed – Nick Clark Windo
THE FEED by Nick Clark Windo is a startling and timely debut which presents a world as unique and vividly imagined as STATION ELEVEN and THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS.
Tom and Kate’s daughter turns six tomorrow, and they have to tell her about sleep. If you sleep unwatched, you could be Taken. If you are Taken, then watching won’t save you. Nothing saves you.
Your knowledge. Your memories. Your dreams. If all you are is on the Feed, what will you become when the Feed goes down?
For Tom and Kate, in the six years since the world collapsed, every day has been a fight for survival. And when their daughter, Bea, goes missing, they will question whether they can even trust each other anymore.
The threat is closer than they realise…
If you love a dystopian thriller then you will absolutely love this. It will certainly make you think about each successive generations access to technology and the impact this will have upon our, or rather their future. I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the blog tour later this week, and the book is released on 25th January but you can order your own copy here.
The Gathering Dark – James Oswald
THE DEAD DEMAND VENGEANCE in the ALL-NEW compelling novel in the BESTSELLING Inspector McLean series.
A truck driver loses control in central Edinburgh, ploughing into a crowded bus stop and spilling his vehicle’s toxic load. The consequences are devastating.
DI Tony McLean witnesses the carnage. Taking control of the investigation, he soon realises there is much that is deeply amiss – and everyone involved seems to have something to hide.
But as McLean struggles to uncover who caused the tragedy, a greater crisis develops: the new Chief Superintendent’s son is missing, last seen in the area of the crash . . .
Oh I do love me an INspector McLean book and this one is a classic. With a plot line a little too close to home for me, this takes McLean back to his otherworldly best and I loved it. I shall be in Edinburgh for the pre-launch event on 24th January, lucky me, but you can order a copy of launch day, 25th, right here.
The Photographer – Craig Robertson
The sergeant took some from each box and spread them around the floor so they could all see. Dozens upon dozens of them. DI Rachel Narey’s guess was that there were a few hundred in all.
Photographs.
Many of them were in crowd scenes, some just sitting on a park bench or walking a dog or waiting for a bus or working in shops. They seemed to have no idea they’d been photographed.
A dawn raid on the home of a suspected rapist leads to a chilling discovery, a disturbing collection hidden under floorboards. Narey is terrified at the potential scale of what they’ve found and of what brutalities it may signal. When the photographs are ruled inadmissible as evidence and the man walks free from court, Narey knows she’s let down the victim she’d promised to protect and a monster is back on the streets. Tony Winter’s young family is under threat from internet trolls and he is determined to protect them whatever the cost. He and Narey are in a race against time to find the unknown victims of the photographer’s lens – before he strikes again.
Confession time. This is the first Narey and Winter book I have read. It won’t be the last. Tackling a very sensitive and timely topic this is pitched perfectly and grabs the attention without trivialising or glamourisng the subject. You can preorder a copy ahead of its 25th January release here.
Assassins Vengeance – Rachel Amphlett
Spies. The best unreliable narrators that money can buy…
Eva and her fractured team are on the run, desperate to find answers and uncover who has betrayed them from within the shadowy government organisation known only as the Section.
Evading assassination in Berlin and Prague, Eva has had time to regroup and try to solve the mystery behind the attempts on her life.
But her enemies are one step ahead of her, eliminating anything and anyone who stands in their way.
Hell hath no fury like a woman who’s been shot at and survived… twice
Assassins Vengeance is the second episode in an ongoing story featuring Eva Delacourt. The story is concluded in episode 3 of the English Spy Mysteries, Assassins Retribution.
Part two of Rachel Amphlett’s English Spy Mysteries series explains a little more of the puzzle but still leaves more questions than answers. Action packed and entertaining, I can’t wait for next week. You can order a copy here.
That is it. Four books. Not my best week but in my defence, I’m tired. Very tired. Quite a busy week on the blog with six posts, in spite of my assertion I was cutting back.
Review: Assassins Hunted by Rachel Amphlett
#BlogTour: The Chalk Man by CJ Tudor
#BlogBlitz: Keep Her Safe by Richard Parker
#BlogTour: A Map Of The Dark by Karen Ellis
Cover Reveal: #magicofstars Jackie Ladbury
#BlogTour: Deep Blue Trouble by Steph Broadribb
The week ahead is full with no less than six blog tours. So much for cutting back … Starting today with An Act Of Silence by Colette McBeth; The Start Of Something Wonderful by Jane Lambert; Vanishing Girls by Lisa Regan; The Feed by Nick Clark Windo; The Cover Up by Marnie Riches and The Innocent Wife by Amy Lloyd. No pressure …
Aside from more reading and more being grumpy and more feeling sorry for myself, this week will be mostly full of reading. I shall try to ignore my streaming eyes, leaking nose and throat that feels as though I’ve been gargling caustic soda and concentrate on the lovely words and the fact I have now, finally, booked my event tickets for Granite Noir. Tidy.
Aren’t you glad this was a short post …
Have a brilliant and hopefully flu/cold free week all. See you on the other side. Bring tissues.
Jen

You thought these NBA prospects would be busts. They turned into stars
Boy were you wrong. (Hint: We were, too.)
On Thursday, we asked Twitter a question. Following a prompt from Celtics Blog, we wanted to know who your biggest busts were: players you thought for sure were headed for stardom but fell way below your expectations.
Here were your answers.
Today, though, we asked the reverse. Who were the players you felt were busts that turned in pretty successful NBA careers?
Now, we're doing the reverse! Who did you think would be a bust that turned out to be a solid player, or even a star?
— SB Nation NBA (@SBNationNBA) August 4, 2017
It’s simple: There’s a lull in the NBA. Free agency is all but over, and aside from pending Kyrie Irving and Carmelo Anthony trades, we have a good idea of what the 30 league rosters will look like next season.
So what better way to kill time than to reminisce about past judgment calls we made that were just flat-out wrong. Here were some of the names you threw around:
Kawhi Leonard
I thought Kawhi Leonard's ceiling was @Bowen12
— Gervin (@GervinTwittiot) August 4, 2017
A zillion percent Kawhi Leonard and I’m owning that one. https://t.co/S6U2HdCqHd
— Mike Prada (@MikePradaSBN) August 4, 2017
When the Spurs sent George Hill to the Pacers for the 15th pick in 2011, most people were confused. Hill was a solid combo guard who gave Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili relief at either back court spot. Why move him for an unproven rookie who, at the time, wasn’t perceived as much more than a perimeter defender?
Today, Kawhi Leonard has an NBA championship and Finals MVP under his belt and has become arguably one of the five best players in the league. He can legitimately defend four of five traditional basketball positions and has developed into an all-world scorer.
Stephen Curry
Steph Curry. Didn't see the passing, defense, or frame to handle the NBA. Easily the most wrong I've ever been. https://t.co/9kYZw39ST0
— Bryant West (@BSWest5) August 4, 2017
Steph Curry
— 6'11 (@Sethdiddy) August 4, 2017
Curry was rated a 69 in NBA 2K9. He could shoot the lights out when he got hot, but that was about it. Then the injuries came, and he looked nothing like a top-7 pick.
But then Monta Ellis got traded and the Warriors drafted some talent to put alongside their super shooter. Today, Curry is a two-time MVP, a two-time champ and arguably the greatest shooter to ever touch a basketball.
IT4
Isaiah Thomas: even without handcheck rules and with a softer league, I thought his being a zero on defense would keep him off the court.
— Will Dickeson (@WillDickeson) August 4, 2017
Sure, Isaiah Thomas went dead-last in the 2011 NBA Draft, but given his stature, the odds were already stacked against him. A few years later, the 5’9” guard became one of the best success stories in the NBA, crashing into giant defenders in the paint or making defenses pay from downtown. And he’s the star of a Boston team that had the best record in the Eastern Conference last season.
Gordon Hayward
Gordon Hayward
— Don (@chewie93) August 4, 2017
Gordon Hayward. https://t.co/kmTnAEP4iG
— Thomas Duffy (@TJDhoops) August 4, 2017
i said gordon hayward should stay at butler lol https://t.co/gcV0V20U4V
— Whitney Medworth (@its_whitney) August 4, 2017
Hayward was coming off of an exceptional season at Butler, falling just short of winning it all in the National Championship Game. But in a 2010 NBA Draft thought to be loaded with names like John Wall, Evan Turner, DeMarcus Cousins, Wesley Johnson and Derrick Favors — remember, these guys were STUDS in college — Hayward’s name didn’t stand out from the pack.
Today, Hayward is a max player on the Celtics after making the All-Star team with the Jazz last season. He could be the piece that pushes Boston over the hump.
J.J. Redick
I was only a kid at the time so it was mostly just Dukie hatred, but: J.J. Redick.
— Peter Nygaard (@RetepAdam) August 4, 2017
Definitely JJ Redick...he's turned out to be more than a shooter https://t.co/tky8n47Yur
— Bodega J. (@Gym_Jaaames) August 4, 2017
JJ Redick. Thought his nonsense wouldn't work in the NBA but he worked and made himself a player. Jimmer, tho...... https://t.co/NjpeppUXAF
— grundlefly (@jerry_eldred) August 4, 2017
The career J.J. Redick has carved out for himself continues to shock me. https://t.co/8z6S1tj4hY
— Eric McKay (@EricMcKay_NCN) August 4, 2017
At a time where the three-point shot wasn’t nearly as valued as it is now, J.J. Redick was a specialist. He still is, but his savvy approach to the game has endeared him across the league as one the best veterans to have on a roster: case-in-point — the Sixers gave him $23 million next season to hit threes and mentor their young guys.
DeMar DeRozan
DeMar DeRozan!
— Adam Voge (@adamvoge) August 4, 2017
I am still slightly confused by the ascension of Demar Derozan to NBA superstar. https://t.co/DMguq5LKqB
— David Ray Allen (@davidrallenjr) August 4, 2017
DeRozan was somewhat of a raw talent when he entered the NBA in 2009. He was a freak athlete who used that athleticism to his advantage on both ends of the floor. Now, the Raptors’ guard is the best mid-range shooter in the NBA, one of the league’s best finishers and an All-Star starter.
Kevin Love
Kevin Love, a lot.
— Steve McPherson (@steventurous) August 4, 2017
Kevin Love Loved him in college, thought there was no way his skillset would translate https://t.co/m4kAfH7J3O
— Peter Adultman (@Pete_Volk) August 4, 2017
Kevin Love spent one season at UCLA as a dominant rebounder, outlet passer and post-scorer with decent range. At the NBA level, he’s been a carbon copy.
Anthony Davis
I....I didn't think Anthony Davis was gonna be able to score consistently in the league. An all-time bad take https://t.co/mygTiTXcG6
— Mikey Hlebasko (@MichaelHlebasko) August 4, 2017
I thought Anthony Davis was going to be a bust. Man, I was wrong!!!! https://t.co/6kM7IC7AIq
— Kaleel Weatherly (@KaleelWeatherl1) August 4, 2017
I’m leaving these guys out to dry here, because I’ve got no idea how they thought Anthony Davis wasn’t going to be great. Shoutout to The Brow.
Kemba Walker
Kemba Walker because I'm a dumbass
— Ravis (@SRavi81) August 4, 2017
Kemba Walker
— Oleh Kosel (@Redhopeful) August 4, 2017
Kemba Walker is listed at 6’1”. At that height in a league that grows every year, it’s easy to count him out. But Cardiac Kemba’s been everything Charlotte imagined and more. Now, they need to get him some help so they can take the next step.
This guy needs a healing
Worst scout ever-I thought Tim Duncan looked soft and too slow in college
— Walter Spath (@wfspath) August 4, 2017
Just gonna leave this Tim Duncan tweet right there.
Kristaps Porzinigs
Kristaps because I always count on the Knicks to make bad choices.
— Chandler Robertson (@C_WRobertson) August 4, 2017
all Knicks fans w porzing
— Brian O'Leary (@Brian_OLeary1) August 4, 2017
KP
— myles wᎥsh (@myleswish) August 4, 2017
Kristaps Porzingis
— Levy Aninditio ▲ (@Aninditio) August 4, 2017
When the Knicks selected Kristaps Porzingis fourth overall in 2015, Madison Square Garden booed him. But KP turned those boos into cheers by placing second in Rookie of the Year voting then endearing himself as the basketball unicorn ready to take the league by storm.
Hey, even Phil Jackson can get one right... right?
Devin Booker

Devin Booker
— BostonSports (@NE_sports_only) August 4, 2017
Any pause you may have had regarding Devin Booker kindly exited stage left when he hung 70 points on Boston last season.
Klay Thompson
I completely missed the mark on Klay Thompson. Not even gonna lie. He shut me up so fast. https://t.co/GySO63Ikz4
— Kristian Winfield (@Krisplashed) August 4, 2017
Klay Thompson
— Eddie Scissors (@Eddie_Scissors) August 4, 2017
I thought Klay Thompson could shoot it. I had absolutely no idea he could play defense at the level he does now. Mama, there goes that man.
