KS Fill: Tonya/Vladimir Petrov, Thomas/Anton; castle in the clouds
Another of the Kickstarter fills, for the prompt: always happy for a Vinny/Tony update, especially if Tonya is involved
Even as a child, at her most idealistic, Tonya certainly never expected to live in a mansion like this. A castle, maybe. She liked castles, though she’s not sure where she expected to find one in Brooklyn. Though, it’s not like mansions were any more realistic, growing up in New York City.
And they wouldn’t live in one if they lived in New York, but in Hartford, it was barely even a splurge. And Vladimir had dreamed of castles too as a boy, wanted Antosha to live in one, or the nearest thing they could get for him. It’s massive, and impractical, and Tonya loves it.
They don’t take advantage of the benefits of it very often, however. Once, they let a production crew film the exterior while they were on vacation in Italy anyway — unfortunately, the film was terrible, so Tonya can’t rewatch it for the thrill of seeing it on screen. Or, she could, but she has to get through the melodrama and the bad acting first, and that’s a chore.
It’s the perfect place to host a party, specifically a party with gravitas — a gala, a ball. But with the exception of Vladimir’s induction in the Hall of Fame, they haven’t had any parties worth talking about, because Vladimir is…territorial, Tonya thinks the best word is. His house is his house — she’s still amazed he allowed the film crew, and is sure he wouldn’t have if he hadn’t been out of the country — and he’d prefer they didn’t have guests at all, with the exception of close friends, family. Even then, it’s only Anton who doesn’t get his hackles up after a few hours, and that might just be because he still considers it Antosha’s house too, even after all these years. Which, of course, it is.
But they’ve been married for thirty years now, and Tonya thinks that’s worth celebrating, and Vladimir agrees. He didn’t agree it merited a party on the scale of the one they’re throwing today, but he caved once Tonya assured him all he had to do was show up, and that the only guests staying overnight would be blood-related to them.
Well, and Thomas, but Vladimir’s fine with that. It seems like the exception for Anton applies to him as well. She doesn’t know if that’s because Vladimir considers him an extension of Anton, welcome wherever he is, or if he’s become family in his own right. She likes to think it’s a bit of both.
With an hour to go the place reminds her the castles she dreamt of, lit up and glittering, even if they're nothing alike. The catering staff have assured her they have everything they need, and after two minor wardrobe emergencies she’s finally finished getting ready. Or, she hasn’t, but the final touches must be done right before the guests arrive.
Vladimir’s ready, he’s assured her repeatedly, which she’s sure isn’t true, but he’s his own man. She hasn’t seen Anton since breakfast, which she finds ominous, though she doesn’t think he’d go far without Thomas, and he arrives in front of her almost as soon as she thinks of him. Such a good boy that she merely needs to think of him for him to arrive, offering help.
“Can I help with anything?” he asks, hands twisting fretfully, like it’s hurting him not to assist, and Tonya takes a moment to wonder if she's developed psychic abilities. Perhaps, but it's more likely that Thomas is just unfailingly helpful.
Tonya takes his hands between hers, stills them. They’re cold, and she wants to chafe them, warm him up. What was that saying, cold hands, warm heart? If anyone fits that it’s Thomas. “I’ve hired professionals to do everything,” she says. “We’ll just get in their way.”
She knows this because she has, at every other event with catering staff, gotten in the way. She’s finally learned her lesson — no meddling this time. So far she's stayed strong, but she's not sure she'll last the night.
“Right,” Thomas says, nodding, hands still between hers. “That makes sense. Our equipment managers say the same thing.”
She bets they do. Vladimir in particular was a menace about his equipment — she’s sure they popped a bottle of champagne the day he retired.
“I know what you can do for me,” she says, and Thomas brightens right up. He really is too good a boy for his own good. She imagines people take advantage of it all the time. Look at her, doing it right now.
“Can you find Anton for me?” she says. “I worry he’s hiding.”
She doesn’t worry he’s hiding, exactly — she knows he’s hiding — she only worries he’ll continue hiding after all the guests have arrived, leaving poor Thomas to muddle his way through a room of people he doesn’t know. Not that Antosha knows everyone, and many of the people he does know haven’t seen him since he was a little boy, so it’s really more them knowing him — she’s sure he’ll be delighted to hear ‘you were just this high when last I saw you’ over and over again.
Perhaps she shouldn’t be surprised he’s hiding. And she isn’t. But Thomas is a guest, though a particularly helpful, considerate one, and Anton may not be hosting the party, but he is hosting Thomas. And Tonya did not raise a bad host. Or, unfortunately she did, she thinks, but he certainly didn’t learn it from her. Thankfully Thomas is very easily pleased, and loyal enough that he’d likely tell her Anton was being an excellent host if she asked.
Thomas nods again, like a little bobblehead. She’s slightly disappointed the Canadiens haven’t done one for him, at least to her knowledge — she thinks Vladimir would be delighted to put it by the ones of him and Antosha in his show-off room. He loves them. Never tires of bobbing their heads. “Can I have my—“
“Your hands, of course,” Tonya says, letting them go. “Do you know the saying? About cold hands?”
“I do,” Thomas says, with a broad smile. She bets he does. Bets people quote it all the time. “Don’t worry, I’ll drag Anton out of wherever he’s hiding.”
“By the hair if you need to,” Tonya says, and smiles at the laugh that trails Thomas up the stairwell.
He doesn’t deserve that boy, Tonya thinks, then goes to bother Vladimir one last time. She hopes that, this time, he’ll actually get ready instead of just saying he already is. Perhaps that’s optimistic. But she thinks everyone needs a little optimism to make it to three decades.
“Tony,” she hears Thomas crooning as she walks down the hall, sounding a little like he’s trying to lure a feral cat, and she smiles wider. Perhaps he’s exactly what Antosha deserves after all.

Role Play

Role Play [trailer]
Emma has a wonderful husband and two kids in the suburbs of New Jersey. She also has a secret life as an assassin for hire.
Bill Nighy brings some energy and makes things interesting for about ten, fifteen minutes. But once her identity is revealed it feels like the movie is going nowhere. And it's obviously inconceivable that she will kill her husband.

A moment of silence. No Pope has derived a title from one of the virtues for generations. Then applause of approval builds again. Holding the table for support, Lawrence sinks to his knees before the new Holy Father. Benitez stares down at him, smiling, thinking...

Role Play Review- A Blandly Done Revisioning Of Something Done Better Before
Action films come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they take the shape of a rom-com. That’s the case with the latest film from director Thomas Vincent, written by Seth W Owen, Role Play. Similar in a way to Mr. and Mrs. Smith or True Lives in a sense this movie has a lot of secrets it’s keeping from some of its characters. This is a lesser version of those two films though. A married couple…

KS Fill: Vinny/Tony; blanket monsters
Another Kickstarter fill -- a request for more of Vinny and Tony gets some postseason flavour.
Everyone always told Thomas that with age came maturity. He’s been waiting for for that to happen to him — kind of hoping it’ll skip him, truthfully, but still waiting — but so far it hasn’t kicked in.
Thomas doesn’t think anyone ever told Anton that phrase. Or, if they did, he decided to go the other way out of spite.
What did come with age, Thomas thinks, is handling playoff exits differently. Or maybe it’s experience, but either way, it doesn’t feel like it did in his twenties. It doesn’t hurt less, he doesn’t think, but he has a sense of perspective that he didn’t have when he was younger and it felt like the entire world had crashed around his feet. He’s not sure Tony has that, though. He isn’t sure how much perspective you can get from inside a blanket fort. Or, maybe not a fort. Fort makes it sound like there was planning, and implementation, and also probably fun?
There was no fun involved in this blanket structure. There isn’t very much structure either. It’s mostly just a pile of blankets twisted around a very cranky man. Still, Thomas figures it’s better to be inside it than looking on from the outside, worrying about if Tony’s gotten stuck in there, all twisted up, but is too proud to call of help, or if he’s getting enough air. There are a lot of blankets piled on their bed right now, so many Thomas can barely find Anton in the pile, which is impressive, considering Anton is a very large man.
Thomas doesn’t want to startle him, but he can’t really knock on Anton’s current setup either. He considers, then taps his knuckles gently against what he thinks might be Anton’s shoulder. “Knock knock,” he adds, just so Anton doesn’t assume he’s just prodding a man while he’s down.
The top blanket opens just enough for him to see a flash of flinty blue eye, then closes again.
“Who’s there?” Thomas says. He doubts Anton has patience for banana, but maybe he can catch him off-guard with a short one. The twins have taught Thomas all of their favourites, and obviously he can’t use the French ones, but they had a few in English too. Interrupting cow’s pretty funny, but Anton has to participate for Thomas to interrupt, which puts a wrench in things.
“A loser,” the pile mutters, and Thomas has to take a sharp breath in so he doesn’t laugh. If he laughs, this blanket pile is on the move, and there's no way Thomas will be joining it.
“Can I come be a loser too?” Thomas says.
The eye’s back. “You’re not a loser,” he says.
“Lost the same series you did,” Thomas says.
Anton’s eye disappears, and Thomas considers more extreme methods — Anton’s stronger than him, but he’s also ticklish, and probably won’t punch Thomas if he goes for his sides, at least not on purpose — when the blanket opens wide enough that Thomas can just barely crawl in. It’s dark in the blanket pile, and hot, humid with Anton’s breath. Thomas makes sure to keep a sliver of blanket open behind him to let in some light and fresh air, and he can see Anton notice him doing it, considering whether to argue that losers don’t deserve light or oxygen.
Thomas bets if it was just Tony in here that opening would already be shut, but now that Thomas is here too, Tony’s stuck — punishing himself means punishing Thomas, and only likes doing one of those. At least, that’s what Thomas is counting on.
“Only one blanket monster allowed, I thought,” Thomas says, and Anton shrugs, their blanket surroundings shifting with the movement.
“That was a hard one,” Thomas says. He spent it on the bench, but that didn’t make it any less hard — watching the final game stretch out of reach, not able to do anything but open and close the bench door for his increasingly dispirited teammates — that’s hard. Hard in a different way than being in the net, but not really less, he’s learned. No matter what, you end up questioning what would have happened if things had been a little different.
“I thought we had it this year,” Tony says softly. “I really thought we did.”
“I know,” Thomas says.
“I wanted to win it with you,” Anton says. Unspoken, that Thomas’ contract is up this summer, that fan favourite or not, Thomas is in his thirties, and there are prospects who deserve a shot waiting in the wings. Unspoken, that he doesn’t want Thomas to retire empty handed. Thomas doesn’t want that either, but even if he does, it was a good one. He wouldn’t trade it for anywhere else, even if a Cup was guaranteed in the bargain.
“I wanted to win it with you too,” Thomas says, and when Anton reaches for him, trying to wrap himself up, surround himself with Thomas the way he surrounded himself with blankets, Thomas does his best to oblige.

Conclave things that have stuck with me most after several watches and reading the book for comparison (I've mentioned some of this in other posts):
When Bellini berates Lawrence about his "precious doubts", he glances around first to make sure no one is going to hear. He's pissed off, but he knows the danger of rumour, and he doesn't want to get Lawrence hurt. It's such a tender little moment
Throughout the film, we get whispering and muttering, but it's never very clear what's being said. Until the end, when we can hear them all saying "Innocentius". After a discordant time of rumour and speculation, the Curia has finally united around Benitez
Lawrence's skullcap: he puts it on at the start when he needs to be professional, and tears it off after his improvised homily and the first time he sends Ray to do some investigating, as though he feels he is not worthy of his title. He's not wearing it at all when he sneaks into the Pope's room. But when he distributes the reports, it's back. He knows this is his duty
The book has a big focus on the role of the media, and we do get some mentions of that in the film (helicopters, camera flashes, etc) but it's incredibly stripped back. The film even changes some scenes to emphasise the role of rumour in such an insular place. For instance, the theatre room does not exist in the book, but in the film it provides space for Bellini's group to plot alone
The shroud over the dead Pope's face, and the ribbon and around the door, flimsy tradition contrasted with the heavy mundanity of the paramedics removing the body
The candles all around the Pope's photo, which are the same as the candle in Benitez' room
Ray letting Lawrence use his glasses to read, which has obviously happened before. I love the solid ground that Ray provides Lawrence
In the book, Tedesco is terrible at Latin despite, as in the film, demanding it be brought back. The film provides a visual standing for this with the vape. He doesn't actually want tradition, he's just using it as a veil for his bigotry
Bellini saying the Pope was "always 8 moves ahead", setting up all the Pope's machinations that appear later
Lawrence being the first person to notice when Agnes and Benitez are trying to speak to the cardinals
The nuns always working in the background. Their work is shown over and over but the film demands effort from the audience to notice, lest they become "invisible"
