I will never understand this idea that the only valid ships are the ones that are canon, or have a legitimate chance of becoming canon. Like, this idea in fandoms where you’re only allowed to ship things that might be validated by the writers, that might be/are canon, or else you’re Doing It Wrong and wasting time and you shouldn’t bother. It’s not allowed to just be about exploring the interesting and entertaining dynamics of two or more characters, or even just throwing characters together for funsies. It can only be about picking literally one OTP, the best one, the best representation, the one most likely to be made canon, and proclaiming that that particular ship is the only valid one, and investing all your energy into it, only to give up on it when it doesn’t go exactly the way you’d hoped in canon.

(and then there are those times when this idea that the only valid, worthwhile ships are the ones that are canon turns ugly. When the majority or part of a fandom has latched onto a ship and started treating it as a great offence/the end of the world when said ship isn’t made canon, to the point where they’re harassing the writers/producers/actors etc)

#like sure #having a ship become canon #or getting validation for the relationship can be awesome #but really all it does is add to the canon dynamics we as shippers get to play with #a ship not being confirmed by canon or the Word of God shouldn't stop you from shipping it #literally do whatever the fuck you want #whatever you find interesting #reminder: shipping and writing fic and making art and talking about things like this is supposed to be fun #it's not a competition for which ship is the Most Canon (and/or healthiest/most pure representation)#this post inspired in part by some weird eccomiah posts i've seen in the gotham tag since the finale #people almost apologising for idk wasting people's time with the ship given that it's not 'endgame'#or saying they're going to keep their blogs up/keep shipping it #or even nygmobblepot shippers saying they'll never give up on the ship #like no one is/should be asking you to #your ship not proclaiming their love and riding off into the sunset together doesn't invalidate your feelings towards the relationship #or the fics you've written or the ideas you've shared #if you're still interested in the relationship in their dynamics then why the hell would you stop shipping it #just because it didn't end up being canon in the way you wanted #since when the fuck has that mattered?#maybe i'm just old #about 99% of my ships would never become canon in any traditional sense #but that's not why i'm here #i'm here because there's something interesting or fascinating or sometimes just hot to their dynamics and that's why i'll ship it
