Patterns? Honestly, the big one is that apparently people are in bed a lot. But stylistically, there’s a bit more short and declarative than not? But other than that, nothing really obvious.

Favorite? Oh, that’s hard. I quite like “The phone call, this time, is from Alice,” because it tells you so much about what’s happening without actually using many words. And I’m also fond of “John Sheridan gives the order that will kill himself and his crew but save the world,” because you know immediately what the stakes are.

The first book in the actual series is on the tbr somewhere, but it’s less of a priority. I’m also reading the Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson and A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine. That second one is a sequel, but I’m enjoying it more that the first book in the series. Clearly, I do not believe in only reading one book at a time.

currently watching: I started the latest season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel today which I’m excited for because that show is so much fun. I’m also watching Snowpiercer weekly which is an experience I don’t entirely know how to describe.

Currently reading: what is reading? (I’ve been reading She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan for a while—it’s taking me forever not because of anything to do with the book, which I’m digging, but because reading has been so hard over the past couple of years. thanks, I hate it. also because I own it so any time something comes in from my library holds I try to read that instead, mostly failing, because 2 weeks is NOT long enough my friends. not anymore. I also have The Bright Ages: A New History of Medieval Europe open and technically in progress. oh, and Saint Augustine’s Confessions.)

Last movie: we rewatched My Cousin Vinny relatively recently, and I think that’s the answer to this although it’s entirely possible that I’ve watched-and-forgotten something between then and now. my brain: sieve. 

Sweet, Savoury, or Spicy: yes, and. (although I have a relatively low spicy heat tolerance level, if I’m going to be honest. I still love spicy foods though.)

Currently working on: apparently my brain is only good for writing Law & Order: SVU fic right now because that’s basically my active WIP list: the exorcist AU, the vigilante AU, and then today I started writing one where Liv and Amanda bang very messily in season 13 (which might end up being something like 5 people Liv banged and one she didn’t or something, I have ideas for some other people, but idek). but also the original thing is in the not-outlining-exactly stage. and I’m going to finish a Berena thing next month. and I can’t stop thinking about Wheel of Time and Moiraine and Lan and Siuan, so while I’m not working on anything about them I can feel it just underneath the surface. waiting. lurking. possible.

I pretty rarely post personal stuff on here so I kind of feel like an asshole doing it now, but... this stripy dude is 14 and he’s had a LOT of unplanned emergency vet trips lately and it’s pretty much tapped us out.

He’s named after the Virginia Woolf novel, he once tried to kill @sapphoshands and he beat up a fox. He’s scared of 99% of everything, but he adores us and he’s had a very happy life up until now. When one of us throws up, he shoves his face in yours to see what’s going on and has been puked on approximately 102391 times in his life. He purrs very loudly, sometimes his whiskers make him look like a walrus and he has the greenest eyes you’ve ever seen.

My wife @damelola, his other mama, set up a JustGiving page if anyone can help out. I know it’s a tough time generally and people have far higher priorities than a relative stranger’s elderly cat, but even good vibes would be appreciated right now.

Fics Wot I Wrote in 2019 (and the 2010s in general!)

So it’s the end of a decade, and I wrote some fic this year! I am going to do the usual list, but I thought I might modify the end-of-year meme into an end-of-decade meme, and have a bit of a look back at the fandoms I’ve written in and the fics I wrote throughout the 2010s, because it’s certainly been a more diverse decade than the last!

So, here is the list of Stuff From This Year:

January 28: The Witch of South Kensington - The Infinite Bad - G - Cornelia and Sebastian and a weird, well, infinitely bad sort of domesticity

April 7: to beckon me in languages i’ve never learned - James Bond - Bond/M - E - M decides what bendings of her will she’s willing to forgive

October 18: If Not Me - Arc of a Scythe - Curie/Faraday - T - Faraday fishes Curie out of the water, and they make the long road-trip back to Conclave together

It’s been a bit of a transition year for me, but look! I have been writing! And there’s one more fic I have completed this year but not yet posted, and it’s a long bastard, so I am quite happy with myself.

And here is the little meme thing, though I’ve modified it a bit to reflect on the decade, because I thought that might be fun.

Fandoms I have written in during the 2010s: Harry Potter, Sanctuary, Scott & Bailey, The Infinite Bad, James Bond, Arc of a Scythe. There are few other things I wrote for Yuletides past, too, but I wouldn’t specifically call that participation in those fandoms, so I’ve left them off.

First fic of the decade: An Interesting and Difficut Woman (HP, Muriel/Ollivander, E)

Last fic of the decade: If Not Me (linked above) or, really, the unpublished monster-fic that is now awaiting beta

Longest fic of the decade: One Time Thing (S&B, Gill/Julie, E). This is my longest fic of all-time, actually, and will remain so even when I publish my new thing. 50K. How did I even. I had a full-time job in 2015, though I do remember starting it before that job happened.

Shortest fic of the decade: Was a Yuletide treat drabble thing about Robot Unicorn Attack, but I’m going to go with a thing I am actually still pretty proud of, Burning, which is 173 words of slightly dark Albus/Minerva, that it turns out I’m glad I posted to ao3, because the LJ comm it was originally written in a comment on has now been deleted and purged.

Something I learned while writing in the 2010s: That I am capable of moving on to new fandoms, though probably not being truly multi-fandom. I have learned that I am serially monogamous, fannishly. Apart from Yuletides past, which have always been a bit of a holiday deviation, I rarely go back to back to writing in a fandom once a new one takes hold of me, something that sometimes makes me sad, but the muse wants what it wants, I guess. I think I move on when I am ready to. I started the decade still firmly in HP, where I had been since roughly 2003, and by now I have cycled through several new interests, which can be happy or melancoly depending on the way I look at it (I am generally not sad to move on to new ideas, but I am sometimes sad that moving to new fandoms sometimes means losing touch with friends from old ones).

Something I’m surprised about when I look back at my fic over the decade: That I can look back at my first fic of the decade, and really most things I have written in the past ten years, and still be damn proud of them. I think part of it is age and maturity, but an even larger part of it is that in about 2008 I started regularly using a BETA, and ever since, I can look back at the things I have written and be proud rather than cringing. Seriously, a good beta is worth her weight in gold, and I have known a few. Hold onto your betas, peeps, and if you don’t have one, GET ONE. Your future self will thank you.

Something that I miss: The comment culture of LJ, and the general tight-knit-ness of my little corner of fandom there. Fandom is now definitely a diaspora, and I have made many wonderful connections in the years since I moved to tumblr/twitter, but god do I miss the comment culture of things like LJ fic exchanges in particular. That might also in part be me missing being a part of a fandom that was LARGE even within its niches. But the muse wants what it wants, lol.

Something that makes me happy: The friends that I have made in my fandoms of the decade - shit, I mean, @incandescent-justice and @girlonabridge and @aubrys and @little-brisk all became proper Real Life Friends of mine when I lived on their continent, and @picardcrusher and @sapphoshands and @moocowmoocow thanks for also screaming about lady detectives with me. And I am so, so pleased that being into Sanctuary helped me meet @troiings and audio drama fandom put me in touch with @lothiriel84 and @mifhortunach and just. yeah. There are probably more people I’m going to feel bad about forgetting but like, FADOM FAMS it means so much to me!

Strongest memories of writing from the decade: Writing ‘Scenes From a Very Special Friendship’ in a notebook in 2011 while on holiday attending DiaCon Alley in the UK, teasing it to the person I was writing it for and talking about it with @kiwi-collideoscope. Writing ‘A Sexual Awakening in Five Acts’ in the breaks at my retail job, sometimes skiving and taking hella long breaks on the steps outside the store and sometimes writing smut in the breakroom while trying to keep a straight face - I think that was the first fic I really wrote large chunks of on my phone, a practise that I have continued, and continues to make me happy. Writing a scene of ‘Be Here, By Me’ in which Julie Dodson smokes a cigarette with the sun on her face while doing exactly the same thing myself. Sitting in the restauarant/bar of my hotel in Berlin with my evening cup of tea (because German hotels don’t have a kettle in the room? idek) writing ‘Warrirors’, which was my first Infinite Bad fic, and the first fic I had written in two years. Starting to write ‘Tethers’ in the taxi in Manila on my way to the airport after my stopover on my way home to Sydney in 2018.

Something I wish I’d written: I wish I’d been able to get on the Berena train, fanfic-wise, but it was such a wild explosion that I couldn’t keep up with it, and the fact that canon never stopped really threw me, too. I really wish I’d managed to write that fucking Yuletide assignment in 2016, though, because none of the NYR prompts have grabbed me since.

Where I think the 2020s will take me: i honestly have no idea, but it might be fun to speculate for the future. Into new fandoms, I think is a safe bet - probably fandoms with Awesome Ladies. I hope this Arc of a Scythe thing can carry me a bit further, but after that, who knows? At the start of the decade, I had no idea that Scott & Bailey existed, or that I would fall for Sanctuary as hard as I did. I had no idea a wild and crazy RPG podcast would be the thing to pull me out of a two-year dry spell, or that I would finish a fic that had been sitting in my WIPs for two years (that’s ‘to beckon me’, btw, thanks, @tayryn, for helping me do a thing I never thought possible and take something OFF the backburner!). But yeah, whatever my 2020s fannish journey holds, I bet it has Awesome Ladies in it - particularly older ones.

Grace/Frankie fic recs!

I promised @hearrtonmysleeve some Grace and Frankie story recommendations, and since I just did some posts for Devil Wears Prada fics, I figured I’d rec some G/F stories here, too.

There are many talented writers in this fandom, and this list is in no way complete; these are the stories that come immediately to mind when I think of Grace and Frankie.

“you will continue to need” by Kathryne (@sapphoshands). Cannot rec this highly enough. It’s an anomaly in the fandom in that it’s set during Season 1, and it’s just lovely and aching and fun and hot. 

“As Frightened As You” by Kathryne. This is one of the first fics posted after S4 came out, and it was such a balm. It takes all the potential and actualized good of S4 and extends it, and also serves as a *perfect* response to the really frustrating, disappointing S4 plot choices. 

Kathryne also has a couple fantastic series of shorter G/F pieces. In The Past Forty Years, K explores Grace’s backstory in often-heartbreaking ways but with her trademark levity, too. In An ordinary hand, Grace and Frankie find their footing post-S4...via cuddling?!?! In each case, whether or not there are more stories to come in the series, each story is standalone so dive right in!

OK, some people other than Kathryne have also written stories. 

Reccing “anyone who has become” by @ellydash to members of the Grace and Frankie fandom is sort of like reccing “Truth and Measure” to an experienced DWPer. If you’ve been in the fandom longer than four minutes, you’ve heard of this one. But it’s extremely worth the rec all the same. This is the story that really made me fall in love with the character of Grace Hanson. It’s an ambitious, beautifully written story not only about what it means for Grace and Frankie to have found each other, but what it means to experience self-discovery later in life. Grace’s decision to except change, and instigate change, is absolutely stunning. (As a heads’ up if somehow you’re not yet aware of this story, there will be ten chapters total and nine are published.)

I also recommend ellydash’s “The Invitation,” which takes place mid-S4 and is an impressively believable gap-filler for the middle of S4, since the showrunners decided the whole mid-season would be an appropriate time to keep its title characters, who are also the smartest characters, and who are also the characters with the most chemistry, from being in the same room.

“There I Will Be” by @telanu. This story is so fucking real. It grapples with sex and death the way those two massive parts of human experience deserve. This story will stick with me forever, not only because it’s a beautiful portrait of characters I love but because it offers a legitimately helpful way to think about aging and committed relationships more generally.

I’d be remiss if I excluded Telanu’s fabulous Grace and Frankie: the Remix universe. While technically incomplete, every episode of the screenshot-based remix feels standalone to me, and the accompanying stories are extremely complete and extremely amazing. 

“Burn Without Sound” by parcequelle (@farmerdamsel). This is one of those stories worthy of a fandom-wide in-unison shout of “Oh, Graaaaace.” Never gonna be over that drunk attempt at a Google search.

Definitely check out any and all of @veroniquemagique‘s writing, but my personal favorite is “Plain and Simple.” It’s written from a Robert-and-Sol outsider POV, and it’s one of the sweetest, tenderest portrayals of Grace and Frankie I’ve read.

I’d recommend any story by overtureenvelops (@lizmitches), but the for love may come series is high on the list. Can you tell I’m a sucker for stories that dive into Grace Hanson’s past and force her to mine the layers of her own life until she finds the truth that was waiting all along?!?

“For where you go I will go” and “The Absolution” by @neeleys are both really lovely stories, and offer some an incredibly unique yet true-to-character look at Grace and Frankie. She even makes Robert hold my interest.

“Darkened Door” by @sheaking81. One of the most emotional moments of S3 takes place with Grace and Frankie on either side of a door from each other. This short and sweet story explores a similar concept. 

“I have no fear of time” by Grevling. Just absolutely lovely characterizations. Slow and sweet, yet manages to span decades.

“come on, baby light my fire” by @ubiquitousmixie. A fun trip back in time--fun especially because we know where they end up.

“i know how it feels being by yourself in the rain (we all need somewhere to stay)” by PotOfCoffee (@magnass). A soulmark AU, and it’s so well done. 

“but honey, i’ll be seeing you” by @dollsome-does-tumblr. OMG. Last but definitely not least. Dollsome has such a great ear for matching (and often elevating!) the snappy, breezy writing style of the show itself. This story is so fun. And there’s pining. So much pining. And isn’t pining the reason we’re here reading fanfic on the internet?

A fair few of my most recent ten are tumblr prompt ficlet collections where the first line was provided by the prompter, so I’ve decided to leave those ones out of this list!

’Duce says they’re going to be ok. 

They don’t talk about it the first time.

The first time Beau pushes Yasha up against a wall, she feels Yasha’s muscles tense under her hands and knows Yasha could break her hold in less than a second if she chose to. 

Beau didn’t want this.

Beau kisses Jester next to a pastry stall, one bright morning in Zadash, crumbs on her fingers and her mouth sticky-sweet.

The darkness that falls upon the school is absolute, black and thick as pitch, bringing a sneaking, coiling terror.

I think the main things I’m noticing immediately are a) my ongoing love affair with the present tense, and b) that I have a tendency towards very short first sentences, which I’ll then clarify in the sentence/paragraph following. Not sure what else really - anyone have any thoughts?

I LOVE THAT YOU REPLIED TO THIS <3 ok srs question tho, what storyline from the books do you most wanna see on the show? i desperately want them to go to the seaside and find sunken treasure or whatever it was

Ooooh, that’s a good question! Yeah, I think the fandom is fairly united in wanting to see The Worst Witch All At Sea, specifically the bit where Miss Hardbroom is injured and Mildred has to take care of her, but also the beach shenanigans! They’ve already used other elements from that book but I think they could do that storyline without having to change too much. (And given how they’ve mined the books pretty liberally already, it would be strange to just not do this one at all considering how interesting it is for the characters.)

I’m also fond of the storyline in The Worst Witch and the Wishing Star in which Mildred is appointed Lantern Monitor and tries SUPER hard to do it properly with no mistakes in spite of mounting obstacles, including a secret puppy. I think that would make a cute episode.
