Greetings!!!

I have another question, this time a relationship kind.

Tony and Steve have “main” love interest in their comics (quotations for Tony because the writers either kills or spirit away his supporting casts). For the purpose of this ask, we’ll focus on Steve rogers/sharon carter and Tony stark/fujikawa Rumiko, and then we’ll get to the part of shipping Steve rogers/tony stark.

First part: in canon, Steve and Tony being a pair romantically won’t happen (I hope they will tho😮‍💨) and they’ll likely be with Sharon and “Rumiko” respectively. In fanon however (and as Stony lovers), we can make it so that there’s a possibility of Stony happening, granted that both have broken up with their girlfriends and are single. Now, the question is, what canon basis would lead to them breaking up with their girlfriends or their girlfriends breaking up with them? I wouldn’t want them to break up just for the sake of it, you know?

Second part: as stated previously, both Steve and Tony have love interests. What part of Steve/Tony ship is compelling for you that you ship these two characters and not their canon ones? And if there was a canon basis that lead to them breaking up with Sharon and Rumiko, will they be able to avoid the same fate with each other?

Thank you for asking! These are fun questions! Sorry it is taking me so long to get around to answering them!

So I'm going to start here by cordially disagreeing with your premise -- because, speaking for myself, I don't actually want Steve/Tony to become 616 canon. I'd be happy to have it in an AU, although ideally a gayer AU than 3490 and something that is more than one panel. Like, a miniseries, or a nice Ults-sized universe. But not 616. Would I be happy if they were canonically queer? Hell, yes. Do I want them together? Probably not.

Look, I know what happens to canon Marvel couples. We all know what happens. If they got together in 616, if we were lucky, maybe we would get a nice special commemorative issue, but probably only if they actually got married. Then we would get, like, six months of them being happy and then Tony would start cheating on Steve with Hydra Steve and we would probably hold Civil War III: Now With Real Divorce and then Tony would sell their entire relationship to Mephisto. Sure, if you like darkfic, you might enjoy reading that fic. But then you'd close the AO3 tab and go back to your much happier canon. Except then this would be canon and we'd be stuck with it until they got back together in ten years. For like a year. Then they'd do it all again.

(Plus, if they put them together in a miniseries or small spin-off universe, they might actually get a shot at staying together for the length of the series, and Marvel editorial might actually let someone do it in the first place. Especially with Steve, who would I think be the sticking point here. I feel like the odds of them being okay with canonically queering up any version of Tony (who is, let's be honest, like 75% of the way there already) is, like, a thousand times higher than the odds of them letting Steve fall in love with a man because blah blah Captain America blah.)

While, since Ed Brubaker's run, Steve/Sharon has basically been Marvel's default pairing for Steve -- although Sharon was dead for, like, fifteen years and they didn't date again for ten more years after that -- I would, sadly, have to say that Tony probably doesn't have a canonical pairing in the same way, given that Rumiko has been dead for over twenty years, has been mentioned maybe once since then, and no writer has ever indicated that they want to bring her back, as far as I know. The current IM writer says he has no plans. So I think Ru means more to fandom than she does to Marvel.

Anyway, in both of these cases, the thing that has canonically led to both of these relationships breaking up is Sharon and Rumiko dying. Sharon eventually came back; Rumiko never has, and for maximum tragedy, Tony was going to propose to her and also she was murdered by someone in Tony's armor so she presumably died thinking Tony killed her.

Superhero comics generally tend to just… be that dramatic. Either that or the hero's girlfriend just, you know, says "ok bye" in about the span of a page (looking at you, Cantwell tanking Tony/Jan) and the hero is now conveniently single and ready for his next girlfriend. Steve also tends to canonically ruin his relationships by prioritizing superheroing over them and/or generally alarming the civilians he dates by being in a lot of danger all the time. Tony also dates straight-up villains more than once and that doesn't… work out. Because they usually try to kill him. So I think Steve/Tony would avoid several of those pitfalls by probably not dying permanently, probably not trying to kill each other (again), and also understanding that being a superhero is a priority.

I do want to clarify that I also enjoy reading about their canon relationships. Sure, yeah, Steve/Tony is my OTP, but that doesn't mean that, like, I wasn't having fun reading all the Tony/Jan in the Slott run, or all Tony/Emma in Duggan's IM run (the fact that Tony has dated multiple telepaths is really fascinating to me) because I absolutely was enjoying this. (Or Steve/Bernie, my favorite Steve canon relationship. I also find Steve and Sharon's relationship fascinating because they seem to have almost no emotional intimacy and yet it's clearly working for them.) So it's not so much "why do I ship Steve/Tony and not their canon relationships" because I like their canon relationships too. But if I want their canon relationships I can… read canon. If I want Steve/Tony, I can't just pick up a comic book about them dating (and, again, I wouldn't really want to).

But why do I ship Steve/Tony? I don't know what to say, really. I read The Confession and got to the end of it and I was like "oh, they love each other. That's why people ship it."

I like stories about queer relationships. I think Steve and Tony are interesting because they understand each other well and have a lot of similar values and at this point a lot of shared history (like, they are committed), and they have a lot of very strong feelings about each other (I mean, not always good, but that makes it fun) as well as an amount of emotional access that they don't really give other people; they clearly get to see each other's real selves, not just the public persona. And this is a combination of things they don't have with other characters, even their other friends. Like, with their other friends, if they get upset with each other, they will probably stop talking for a bit, take a break, think things over. Exhibit reasonably normal behavior. Steve and Tony? They need to be in the same room even if they can only scream at each other. They just… feel compelled to keep offering each other their personal feelings, even when they really should not. They are just massively intensely into each other.

Again, I think if canon tried to interpret this in a romantic way, it would involve breaking them up a lot and making them not… be with each other. Which is not how this dynamic actually works when they don't get along, but, like I said, a lot of Marvel characters' romantic relationships fail in similar ways, which is why this is a thing I don't want canon to do, because I think they'd try to fit them into that mold. Fandom can make them have all the emotionally messy romance! Canon can just write them as emotional messes who can't stay away from each other. We can do the rest.

So the emotional access/intimacy isn't always good, but it's absolutely fun to read. I'm thinking of in early v4 when Steve and Tony are barely speaking to each other and not on the same team but Tony makes a special point of having someone tell Steve he of course already has the password for this drive full of instructions for how to deactivate Tony's RT. Like, these guys are barely talking and Tony thinks it is absolutely perfectly normal and a good idea for Steve to be able to turn off Tony's autonomic nervous system. No one else has this ability. No one at all really should have this ability and, yet, here they are. Meanwhile, Steve is not on Tony's team because he's off doing black ops -- he refused to be on the Avengers -- but yet he cannot stop showing up to Avengers missions and having a terrible relationship with Tony. They can't talk to each other but they also can't leave each other alone. It's fascinating.

Plus, there's so much canon that you can basically have your pick of character dynamics -- whatever the hell that was in v4 is canon, and them being BFFs is canon, and so on. As I think I have said, I love this thing they have going on a lot -- you can see it in the azure eyes issue -- where they have this mutual admiration society and mutual inferiority complex going on where they both think the other one is so great and they can't understand what this person who is so great sees in them. But they both believe this! I love it. So, yeah, if you want to see them as being totally happy, I would absolutely read that, and there are eras of canon where I would buy that; I think it just depends where you want to go with them. I mean, I also obviously write super sappy fic in addition to stories that are miserable piles of pain. But whatever happens, Steve and Tony are clearly not leaving each other for good.

I genuinely shipped Remy x Rogue from the series and some moments in the comics.

Erik x Rogue just happened to be another pairing I later shipped in addition bc I was fascinated by all of their interactions in the comics.

I knew Remy x Rogue were THE pairing though, so I left it at that.

Then ‘97 happened.

I love Remy and him with Rogue to bits…

but my heart has been beating SO ARDENTLY from all of the moments with Erik x Rogue.

I haven’t been so passionate about a non-status quo pairing since X-Men: Evolution (Cyclops x Rogue 😅), and my heart just ACHES so much for Rogueneto to have a canon happy ending since the comics keep fumbling that up.

anon, man, i get you. i’m new to this fandom entirely but i’m not particularly a fan of the rogue/gambit relationship from what i’ve seen of it—but then rogue/magneto is way more geared towards my personal tastes anyways.

i actually got into '97 BECAUSE i learned about the rogue/magneto relationship and i was so intrigued by the idea of it (my only knowledge at that time of these two characters was ian mckellan and anna paquin and i thought 'well god that's wild as hell i gotta see this' and then BOOM magneto was out here lookin like THAT and of course i got hooked are you KIDDING me) and i was instantly drawn to the dynamic between them and the intrigue of their relationship. getting to see them coming together at the end of episode 2 like that was...well, it cemented the whole thing for me, the girl who no one can touch and who can't touch anyone else, who craves physical intimacy and connection, finally having someone who can touch and be touched by her?? oh my god. the way she melted when he touched her hand, i'm still just unwell over it.

(also scott/rogue in evolution was super cute potentially so you're so real for that fr)

but i think what really draws me to them as a ship is how intensely and deeply their relationship goes in the comics. these are two people who forged a bond with each other that's lasted for years--even when they've been apart or with other people (gambit, for instance) they're still orbiting each other. rogue is always the one person to trust erik, to believe she can still appeal to him or that he can be reasoned with and erik is always there when and if rogue needs help, needs him. PERSONALLY i think that they've fallen together and apart in the comics like they have because they're both so similar and and both so self-sacrificing that they're willing to give up their own happiness together to try and make others happy, to meet outside expectations, and because i think they're both afraid of actually accepting happiness together. rogue is also, i think, not prepared for the kind of relationship/life that erik is offering her. he's intense, and his life is intense, and honestly if she were to choose to be with him it would mean accepting power and accepting the love of someone who wants to help her grow and evolve and be powerful because he sees potential in her and views her not just as a lover but as a partner and an equal. and for someone as powerful as magneto to see you as an equal....i mean i'm sure yall can do the math there.

i'd love to see them both fully embrace a relationship and a life together, but i know that's probably not gonna come together in the comics for us 😮‍💨 at least certainly not any time soon; but the relationship we've been getting bits and pieces of in '97 has the potential to be something really interesting and really satisfying, so i'm hoping they do more with it moving forward !!

The Official lazarushound Dean Winchester Playlist

Okay so this playlist is a big deal to literally no one except me but I spent like two hours explaining every single song on my dean playlist and I'll be damned if I don't share it with SOMEONE.

The playlist in question, which I update and add songs too fairly often(ish). It's roughly arranged in order of Dean's story, from pre-canon to the finale. A fair few of the songs are courtesy of catgirlhannibal, whom I adore.

Warning that is is a VERY LONG READ and almost definitely is plagued with typos. Without further ado, here is the 9.5k word explanation of every single song (at time of posting) on the playlist. Call that shit explicable Dean Winchester vibes, complete with my favourite lyrics from each song.

• Ramble On - Led Zeppelin

Dean's favourite song! The whole song is basically about having no choice but to keep going, even when things are tough. It's also actually about LOTR which is funny cause Dean's secretly a nerd lol. But yeah, it reflects a lot on Dean's nature as a traveller and someone who never settles in one place for long. Sometimes I grow so tired but I know I've got one thing I've got to do - I ramble on.

• Travelling Riverside Blues - Led Zeppelin

Dean's other favourite song! Probably not a popular reading of this song but for me, it definitely has a level of queer coding. Asked sweet mama, let me be your kid, she said "you might get hurt if you don't keep it hid" is the most obvious example of it.

• Psalms 40:2 - The Mountain Goats

Very biblical song lol. It's a lot about small town America (as many TMG songs are) and shitty motels which resonates with Dean pretty heavily. Not to mention: He has raised me from the pit and set me high.

• Night Moves - Bob Segar

This one is literally in the show so naturally reminds me of him. But it's about a teenage romance which definitely makes me think of young Dean. I mean, come on: out in the backseat of my '60 Chevy when the man drives a '67 Chevy??

• Father - The Front Bottoms

A few songs on this playlist are pretty much only there for one or two lines. This is not one of them. I could write another essay about this song and how it relates to Dean, every fucking line. You were high school, and I was just more like real life, and you were okay as a girlfriend, but I was just more like his wife 😮‍💨

• Old Number Seven - The Devil Makes Three

This is another song I'm pretty convinced was written about Dean. Once played it on guitar and my dad asked if it was about him so that's all the validation I needed. Angels start to look good to me, they're gonna have to deport me to the fiery deep.

• Mission - Alex G

This song to me is very much pre canon/season one Dean. It's all about following orders and being a good soldier, much like Dean's devotion to his father. I was trained to stick to the mission, I was trained, I kept it on track. To me, Mission has a slightly bitter tone, as though the narrator is resentful that they've followed orders so obediently and only suffered as a result.

• Adam Raised a Cain - Bruce Springsteen

Courtesy of catgirlhannibal. What a surprise, another biblical song. Dean sees himself as nothing more than a soldier, violent and aggressive. He sees his father as a hero, despite the fact that he's an abusive bastard. Well, daddy worked his whole life for nothing but pain, now he walks these empty rooms looking for something to blame.

• Shoulders - Big Thief

Okay, I'd argue this song is more akin to Sam than Dean but fuck you, this is my playlist and I choose the music. And the blood of the man who killed my mother with his hands, it's in me, it's in me, in my veins is obviously related to Sam and Azazel but also to Dean and John, as though Dean comes to realise that he's just like his father.

• Celene - Gigi Perez

End of season two! This song is about losing a sibling and is very much the mindset I pictured Dean to be in after losing Sam for the first time. I'd also argue it's how Dean felt when Sam was at Stanford. The other day I thought of something funny, but no one would have laughed but you.

• Like Real People Do - Hozier

Why were you digging? What did you bury before those hands pulled me from the earth? HELLOOO CASTIEL! Very season four Destiel, those boys will NOT kiss like real people do.

• It's Only Sex - Car Seat Headrest

Okay so post-resurrection Dean is VERRRRRY traumatised which makes it difficult for him to enjoy the things he used to love, including sex. This song is also about his struggle over his feelings for Cas: what happens if I don't like it? I like you.

• Not Allowed - TV Girl

Well, you may not like it but you better learn how cause it's your turn now! Very much following on from It's Only Sex, similar themes in this song but more relating to Dean's insistence on keeping up The Act and pretending he's the same man he was before Hell.

• Presumably Dead Arm - Sidney Gish

Second catgirlhannibal song to make the list. Just to start this off, this isn't the start of anything. To me, this whole song is Dean skirting around his feelings for Cas and trying to pretend they don't exist in hopes they go away eventually. They don't. Honey, you are nothing to me, (but alcohol and dopamine)/(I don't call people anything thought to be so sweet).

• Tangled in Ropes - Holy Locust

I literally wrote a whole essay about this one so I'll keep it short with just the best lyric. Had a laugh made of wax, house made of butter, how they melted that summer.

• Hate Yourself - TV Girl

If there's one thing we've learned about Dean Winchester, it's that the man loves to use sex as a means to avoid his problems. How long will it take? Before you start to hate yourself and go straight into the arms of someone else is just straight up Dean struggling to give himself time to grieve and overcome his trauma. He'd rather just hookup with someone else and pretend it doesn't make him hate himself more and more every time.

• Cherry Wine - Hozier

See: my whole essay about this song and Destiel. And it's worth it, it's divine, I have this some of the time.

• Body to Flame - Lucy Dacus

Another catgirlhannibal song! I see you holding your breath with your arms outstretched, waiting for someone to come rip open your chest. This song to me feels like Dean kicking himself for every trusting Cas, after Cas betrays him for the first time. To accept Cas as his family was going against his every instinct to close himself off from outsiders, and Cas just proved him right by betraying him.

• Motion Sickness - Phoebe Bridges

Okay this one is basically just for I hate you for what you did, and I miss you like a little kid lol. It just perfectly encapsulates Dean, bitter and resentful towards Cas whilst simultaneously missing him so much his heart aches.

• I'm Your Man - Mitski

Oh, woof. Continuing the betrayal arc, this song is all about Dean's guilt. It's his fault Cas fell from Heaven, his fault this angel isn't holy anymore. I'm sorry I'm the one you love, no one will ever love me like you again.

• Not Strong Enough - Boygenius

Where do I start? Always an angel, never a god 😮‍💨 I think if you played this song to Dean it would break him a little bit. I DON'T KNOW WHY I AM THE WAY I AM!!!

• Legit Tattoo Gun - The Front Bottoms

I was aware of this song but catgirlhannibal brought to my attention that it's Destiel coded 🧐 Who did I think I was? Who did I think that I could be? Oh, how dare me. Dean just kicking himself for ever thinking he could allow himself to have something with Cas.

• SHALLOW (PPL SWIM IN SHALLOW WATER) - Saya Gray

Okay, this one is a bit of a "hear me out." I'm seeing Mother Mary, she says I'm closer to Hell than the clouds are to Heaven. Dean's mother is called Mary so she's LITERALLY Mother Mary which scratches my brain very nicely. Obviously Dean sees himself as a sinner and doomed for Hell, despite the fact that he's a hero. And I left my enemies, cause nobody hates myself more than me, GOOD LORD DOES THAT MAN LOVE SOME SELF LOATHING. My mother's evil and the angels too is soooooo self explanatory. Dean has an idealistic version of Mary in his head which is challenged when she comes back to life and he interacts with her as an adult. There's also the fact that real angels aren't as "good" as you'd think. Sometimes I don't think I'm cherished enough.

• John Wayne Gacy, Jr. - Sufjan Stevens

This song is an allegory for being gay. The narrator sees himself as evil, just as bad as the serial killer for which the song is named, just because he's gay. And in my best behaviour, I am really just like him, look beneath the floorboards for the secrets I have hid.

• Always - Panic! At the Disco

Another one that is less obvious without me explaining it lol. The light in this song is a reference to the Great Gatsby which is a whole other queer coded story in its own right. But I always (hehe) picture this song as Dean struggling with Cas' feelings for him which are becoming more and more evident. It was always you falling for me particularly stands out to me, along with you are taking me apart like bad glue on a get well card.

• Star Tripping - Kevin Atwater

Okay I looooooove love this song. But it's another song which relates to God and being queer. It's about a very toxic relationship, in which one person is relatively okay with their sexuality and the other is incredibly repressed (seem familiar?). I could use any lyric from this song but I'll go with: you think He made you wrong, I think you're giving Him way too much credit, crying at the party, know it only bothers you if you let it, later you can kiss me, blame it on the stuff you took to forget it.

• The Calendar - Panic! At The Disco

Another Panic! song 💀 also from vices and virtues. Another "hear me out." There's the more obvious I will come back to life but only for you but I also think the rest of the song relates pretty strongly to Destiel. You said if you don't let it out, you're gonna let it eat you away, I'd rather be a cannibal baby, animals like me don't talk anyway. For me, it strongly resembles Dean's view of himself, an attack dog. Cannibalism as a metaphor for love. And obviously that man loves to repress stuff and let it eat him away, so to speak.

• Lacy - Olivia Rodrigo

Lawd. This song has a lot of queer subtext in and of itself. It's all about adoring someone to the point where you become insecure because you know you'll never be as good as them. The song is bitter and resentful whilst simultaneously loving and adoring. I despise my jealous eyes and how hard they fell for you, yeah I despise my rotten mind and how much it worships you. He hates himself because he loves Cas. HE HATES HIMSELF BECAUSE HE LOVES CAS.

• Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want - The Smiths

Dean does not let himself have nice things. Lord knows, it would be the first time. This song feels pretty self explanatory to me lol.

• Feeling Oblivion - Turin Brakes

Okay this is my favourite song of all time so I'm slightly biased for including it HOWEVER. I feel it also applies to Dean pretty well. We're now at the point in the story where Dean is about to/has already lost Cas. This song invokes an incredibly deep feeling of nostalgia for me, like looking back on when things were better. Now it is night time, maybe we're cruising avoiding the anti-cruise, like tell me this isn't Dean and Cas just driving around Kansas cause Dean can't sleep 😭 and don't even get me fucking started on so don't leave me here on my own, by the time fear takes me over, will we still be rolling? Feeling oblivion cause this song makes me cry every time I hear it I stg.

• Who We Are - Hozier

Poor Dean :( bro has just lost his best friend, and is now realising that he'll never be able to tell him how he felt. It's like he's seeing things plainly for the first time, realising what he's been missing. He never had Cas because they spent so long avoiding their relationship, and now it's too late. You only feel it when it's lost, getting through still has its cost, quietly, it slips through your fingers, love, falling from you drop by drop.

• Crack Baby - Mitski

I don't know if I really need to say more than: crack baby, you don't know what you want, but you know that you had it once, and you know that you want it back.

• Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan

This is another song that's in the show (dark side of the moon, I love you) so naturally reminds me of Dean. It might be a bit on the nose putting it right at the end but it just feels like Dean finally letting himself rest (die of tetanus). Mama, put my guns in the ground, I can't shoot them anymore.

Real talk... it's a good but sad set up. Especially considering the angle Howard was shot at? Fairly easy to rule as a suicide, I'd imagine. The wallet and wedding ring help. Which is plausible but you'd have to wade out pretty far for the current to grab you (I think, anyway).

Psychology note here, Lalo is good with conflict (clearly). Him commanding attention and giving clear directives is a good step in crisis management. Of course, the gun and dead body helps convince Saul and Kim to follow said directives. Hi again! Sorry it's been a few days, I've been busy trying to get everything together for Christmas while juggling work and studies.

Thank you for the recommendations! I'll definitely want to listen to them. And that's really cool that they include all the members on vocals like that! I put on Deceptive Bends now, and I'm only on the third song but I like the softness of the music, it's something I'd put on on a sunny Sunday or a relaxing Friday night. But that's just the first impression.

Ooh, do you have any favourite songs from Beatles or Zeppelin?

Well, White Christmas (Bing Crosby version) is one that always makes it feel like Christmas for real. Also The Christmas Song and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. Holy Night is one that can bring me to tears with the right arrangement (even though I'm not a bit religious). I also always thought that Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton's "Christmas to Remember" was so very romantic.

What are your plans for the holidays? It's so close now! Me and my partner managed to get a tree today, though forgot to ask to have the bottom of the trunk cut fresh so we're going out for a new try with that tomorrow x) and also to get some presents. Tomorrow we're also gonna try to get the apartment finished decorating. Christmas Eve is the big day here, so there's not much time left, and we would like to have the 23rd to just relax.

I hope you’re doing well! and no worries, I’ve been busy with work and school myself. I’m just glad this semester is finally over and that I have the rest of this week off work to just take a breather 😮‍💨

Omg! I hope you know you just put a smile on my face knowing you were listening to DB 😭 Please that entire album just screams ✨Eric Stewart supremacy✨ to me 😫 that man literally put his heart and soul into that album and I’m so proud of him for that 😌 Eric plays both guitar and piano and probably other strange instruments on that album and if I’m not mistaken, he was also the mastermind behind producing Bends. I feel like DB was Eric’s way of showcasing his brilliance as a multi-instrumentalist and I think that’s what makes that album extra special to me. I know I’ve probably mentioned this before, but that album was really what made me fall in love with 10cc, but more importantly with Eric. Also as an aside, I don’t know I’ve mentioned this already but I kinda have a thing for multi-instrumentalists lol (i’m talking to you Eric Stewart and John Paul Jones).

As far as Beatles songs, I love Helter Skelter, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Here, There and Everywhere, Day Tripper and Paperback Writer. My favourite Zep songs are probably Misty Mountain Hop, Black Dog, Stairway, Immigrant Song, When the Levee Breaks, D’yer Mak’er and No Quarter.

And those are some great Christmas classics also! I know this is probably gonna sound silly but I also like The Chipmunk Song by Alvin and the Chipmunks. I think that song is just too stinkin’ cute! 💗

Ah and the holidays, I’m always bad at preparing for them lol I still have to do some Christmas shopping. Not that I have a lot to buy or anything BUT I always get extra generous around this time of year and feel obligated to buy presents for people. Also I’m pretty stoked bc this week, I’m thinking about buying myself a bass guitar for Christmas (thank you, John Paul Jones). And that’s nice that you’re taking some time off for a little R & R, we all need that sometimes ☺️
