this was supposed to be a rendering attempt hence it's unfinished BUT FINALLY, I drew something for the Reverse 1999 version of Halley ✨
she doesn't have the frost-tipped hair like her OG counterpart, but I think the two-tone suits her comet themes much better. also decided that I might make a marble one of her main items for Lore Reasons
#reverse 1999 oc#reverse 1999#anime girl#digital#illustration#artists on tumblr#what do I even tag this as lkjldjasd#my art#my ocs#oc: halley (r1999)#this isn't the finalized design for her outfit since it's WAY too plain#thinking of interesting motifs for it is difficult hhh#right now the biggest one is ofc 'scientist'#but also the sillhouette of the outfit is supposed to look similar to what noblemen wore during the 17th-18th centuries#since Edmund Halley observed the comet during that period

Am I the only one who dislikes Lilith's new design?
I mean, yeah, it is true I always have a hard time getting used to my faves getting new designs, but this time I specifically feared this.
The show always had a lot of meaning in the characters design, especially with the hair, as a way to present their character development - Lilith had the most changes regard to that.
See, every time Lilith was gone from the screen for a while and came back, her appearance had changed at least a little bit.
There's a bit of a pattern I noticed about that.
Each new design she had was:
1. Consisting of clothes that got shorter.
2. Taking her back to her natural self, the way she's been as a child, before the coven.
And that's why I feared her design for the newest episode, since she could've had so many possibilities of changes!
She could've had ginger roots, she could've had more grey hairs, she could've had hair completely curly and puffy, and having shorter clothes in whatever shades... They really could've done anything with her design with that pattern of the changes I already mentioned.
But
Then
It was kinda very, very different than what was supposed to be???
Again, let me explain the pattern with the examples from her past designs.
This is how we first meet Lilith:
Here as the head of the Emperor's Coven she's a contradiction to her natural design - hair dyed in the opposite shade, straightened and with glasses gone.
She's also fully covered, dress going from her neck, to hands to literally covering her boots too. The shades of her clothes are gray and black, colorless. In general her appearance is cold and blank, because she's supposed to be intimidating, and again - be the opposite of her natural look.
At the end of season one after she splits the curse and officially defect from the coven the next time we see her, in season two, she looks like that:
As you can see, her shirt is covering only half of her arms now, exposing her shoulders too and showing more skin than before. Her skirt as well going to her ankles now and showing some of her boots underneath that too. Her clothes still mostly lack of colors and looks quite plain, as expected considering she's probably wearing some old clothes from Eda. It fits with her character at the time - she's new to her magic being limited and being out of the coven and all that, still figuring things out. Her hair, while still straightened, is a bit disheveled.
After that, Lilith leaves for a while, and when she returns in season 2b she looks very different.
She's finally embracing herself, and it really shows in her appearance.
Her clothes are more of a unique design - having a short(!) Shirt with a gold botton, a vest and a skirt that goes down only to her shin now. Each clothing part she wears in that design has a completely different shade (okay, minus the boots that are the same color as the vest, but for once her boots have colors that isn't gray or black), making this outfit very colorful and unique, as said.
Her gray streak is longer now and her hair starts to regain it's poofiness again.
And finally - the glasses are back!
In this design she resembled most to her neutral look as we know from all the flashbacks of her as a teen.
Personally this is my favorite design of her, because you really see how she's finally expressing herself, while both going back to her natural looks while keeping some of the things she adapted in time (meaning: having the glasses back on and poffier hair while still having dyed hair and all) I think it was a great balance between her old and new self.
But it doesn't stop here, because when she appears on-screen again, only a few episodes later at the end of season 2b, her hair is a even more curlier, as her front strands are starting to get wavier too!
She only left for a while and still changed a little.
And that- that is exactly why I feared the new design she'll have. It literally could've been anything along that pattern, as I explained before, and that's also why I'm so disappointed and unhappy about it.
Each of Lilith's designs showed how she's slowly going back to her natural looks, to her past self, and here it just...so unrelated???
First of all - HER GLASSES
where tf are those??
Why did she decide not to use them again, and in the middle of a basically apocalyptic time too? Like, seriously, this makes no sense.
The glasses were really important in my opinion. She had them as a child and discarded them in her coven years, probably because of the well known stereotype of glasses being nerdy. She didn't want to be seen as this dorky nerdy girl, as we see her in season 2 when she's out of the coven, so she had to let the glasses go.
But then in season 2 she wears them because she no longer needs to resemble anything, and she's free to be herself - as dorky as she is - and doesn't have to fight for respect and fear of others and all.
The glasses are HER.
Like, idk about you but having glasses for years kinda becomes an important part of you (speaking from experience lol) so it is VERY weird to me that now she's once again discarding them.
I don't have much to say about her clothes because yeah, it's the middle of an apocalypse, so it's kinda like at season 2a, random old clothes and no actual time for fashion consideration lol.
I do kinda like it, like, the colors are cool (literally) and it goes well with it being colors that represent her - blue and light turquoise. They were also the first colors we saw in her when we first met her at the show. If you'd look again at her season 1 design, we see how the only colors in her appearance are the colors of her hair, eyes and gem, which are dark blue and light turquoise, just like her dress and shirt in this recent design.
The length of the clothes are divergent from the pattern I mentioned as the dress still goes down to her shin here and the shirt is once again covering her entire arms and neck, even more than in her season 1 design. But again - it's the middle of basically an apocalypse, so it's understandable.
But her hair. It... It makes no sense to me.
Why is it so short? Why in the middle of this crisis of the isles she decided to chop it?
I kinda feel like it's very unrelated to anything, like maybe the crew just wanted to give her another little change in the little time we have left for the show?
(No hate for them, ofc. I'm sure there's an actual reason that we don't know of, I'm just lost here.)
There's a lot we didn't got to see in this episode of what happened in the isles in those months Luz was stuck in the human realm, and this should be the least of our concerns, but I'm still intrigued by that.
I will say that with her hair being orange again the colors of the clothes combined very well, being opposite colors. But even though I like that she's kinda returning to her neutral look in that, it also kinda weird, like, the length.
Eda having short hair was no surprise, as we have already seen her with shorter hair in a flashback, this being her way to deal with things (mental breakdown haircut™)
But Lilith had always kept her hair long. Always. So if we're looking at all the appearance changes she had during the show, and how all of them are connected to her returning to her natural look as a child, this length is very uncharacteristic.
It is kind of a big change to do too, that in my opinion, doesn't add to her character at all. With this haircut, the gray strand is also shorter, as if she's trying to keep it from spreading or make it less noticeable. With the way her character design always tried to show how she's slowly embracing herself, it feels weird that she wouldn't be proud or at least natural about her hair.
I understand the hair length is like that because that was the quickest way to have her fully return to her natural hair color, but was it really necessary?
This is actually one of the things I love the most about Lilith (as well with the other hags, but it's even stronger with Lilith) - that change can be slow.
Many times in shows and generally in life we get the message that we're supposed to figure things out, figure ourselves out, in our teen years or early twenties at max.
That's something really cool about the Owl House, how so many of the older characters have similar problems to the ones the younger generation has, and how many of them basically lived their lives on hold for decades, not really letting themselves grow and change. When they do, it happens alongside the younger generation, showing how you can still change and evolve as a person even at the age when your life supposed to already be sensible and balanced.
So yeah, changes can be slow, and if it took Lilith years to finally start and embrace herself and slowly return to her natural self, then why have it rushed all of a sudden?
It would've worked way better if just like it was in season 2b that her hair started regaining its poofiness back and the gray strand got longer, that just like that we'll see her hair continue to slowly go back to it's natural state - curl more and see the roots grow, instead of chopping it drastically to bring her fast to the final destination of her hair color in her design.
I really am curious to know what was behind this design decision, and if it's related to the show being shortened as I suspect or not.
Anyway, let me know if you agree or not and what were your thoughts of Lilith design!
Thanks for reading this rant/analysis, I'd love to hear more opinions <:

Back on my Nameless bullshit cuz I'm hyperfixating on it again and just today finished replaying Lance's route
Wanted to take this post to infodump about the character designs. Yes we all know the outfits are really strange and aren't co-ordinated at all, especially Red's, but I think at the end of the day, the outfits are the doll's default clothing and since they're just dolls the outfits prioritise design over practicality so it kinda makes sense that a doll's clothes wouldn't translate well into a human body
But I didn't wanna talk about their default outfits, I wanted to talk about their school uniform. They all (excluding Yuri) wear the exact same uniform. Yet they all manage to wear it in a way that highlights their own personality thru it.
Starting with Lance, he wears his blazer buttoned up with a plain and formal tie, showing how plain and straight forward his personality is.
Yeonho wears a bow but it's slightly lopsided, showing he's a bit fancier than Lance's tie, but he's inexperienced and younger than the others so he a lil confused but he got the spirit.
Tei wears a bow, like Yeonho, but it's straighter and more professional, so he's definitely fancier but knows what he's doing.
Yuri's suit is more professional too, as he's a teacher in the school, but he also regularly wears a pair of sunglasses to show how he is the only one of the boys to really care about his appearance as to change it so much, and especially with the choice of sunglasses showing status and how he views himself as cool
Finally, Red doesn't button up his blazer, nor does he button up the top button of his shirt, and he doesn't even wear any tie at all. This shows just how different he is to everyone else and also that he's more of a free spirit who doesn't particularly conform to the majority. Also, not buttoning up blazers/coats and top buttons is an autistic mood, on top of having difficulty with tying bows and ties. I personally headcanon he just straight up doesn't know how to tie knots like that at all and needs Tei to tie his shoelaces for him, but he eventually gets fed up with relying on Tei and just buys velcro instead
I'm not done yet tho cuz now I'm gonna talk about the girls too:
First of all, Soi's uniform is, again, the same as the other girls, but the way she wears it really emphasises her larger than life personality. She wears a ribbon in her hair as well as a bow tie but also with an um,, open,, chest? She definitely cares about her appearance and expresses herself in a very feminine way with her posture as well. Did you know Soi only has 1 sprite? Somebody else who uploaded the character sprites talked about this, but it's very easy not to notice her lack of sprites because of just how expressive her 1 sprite is on its own. It's just so expressive she doesn't need any more than 1 and you don't even notice it!
Shinbi on the other hand, has a formal tie, showing she's more reserved than Soi, but she's regularly seen either with her hands in her pockets or holding a strawberry milk carton, showing that she has quite a laid back attitude, compared to Soi's energy
Eri, I think, is the only character to have 3 different outfit sprites, which is 1 of the few things I would change about the game - I think if the main characters are dolls shouldn't they dress up a bit more? I don't even think Red has a justice warrior sprite, altho that's probably thrown out in favour of the play cg in his route. Eri's uniform is plain but still a bit messy - she has a bow tie but it's lopsided and she doesn't button up her blazer, which shows that she knows her own style and hobbies but isn't too organised or professional about anything herself
I don't rly know what else to add and it's kind of late. Maybe someone else has made a similar post, maybe that person was me, but this is what I made and now I'm posting it so everyone else can see it too :)
