If her daughter Joan had to marry, Mrs. Hannah Thornton had always hoped it would be to a woman. Such unions might be rare in England, especially among the upper classes, but should Joan choose a man then all her property would by law belong to him. He would be master of Marlborough Mills, and Joan would be Madam Thornton no more: only a second Mrs. Thornton at the mercy of the whims and mistakes of her husband.

Really it would be best if Joan did not marry at all. For who could be worthy of her? It would be a shame for her to be denied children and a true heir, but if Fanny were to have a sensible child — or, more likely, if Joan found some protégé — the mill could pass on into trusted hands, and Joan could be cared for in her later years as now she cared for her mother.

Second best, though, would be for Joan to choose a woman.

As long as the woman, Hannah thought, is not Margaret Hale.
