The thing about Stargate is that sometimes you just have to go 'it was 2005 🤷' and not excuse it but if you don't just sort of look past it then you're going to have a bad time
#like they can't do better because the shows have been off the air for 15 years#and compared to a lot of older shows they really didn't age that poorly#but yeah it has its fair share of misogyny and mild homophobia and objectification/backgroundification(probably not a word) of women#but yeah i think you've just gotta be like 'it was 2005' and not dwell on it too much#this is because of that post about rodney's growth in sga#and people not forgiving him for his misogyny#which totally fair if you can't that's all fine#just...growing up in that era i swear it feels like that's just how men were written#and again it's not okay! but like...i don't know i guess dealing with it for so long i just learned to look past it#anyway probably going to get hate for this oh well

The other thing about being a Rodney girl, is that sometimes I feel like I am walking on eggshells when encountering SG-1 Sam fans, and other fans who conveniently choose to ignore his character's progression and growth, don't get me wrong I like Sam and I know that Rodney had started out as an intentionally unlikable character, but I hate it when people ignore the five seasons of Rodney's stunning character development. I think that Rodney may be my fave character in all of Stargate canon.
I’m at a bit of disadvantage there because the only SG-1 episode of his I’ve seen is ‘The Road Not Taken’ so I’ve not seen Rodney at his worst in SG-1 and I’m pretty wrapped up in a bubble of SGA fans!
That being said, I do stumble across the occasional anti-McKay post in the Rodney McKay tag here which is obviously written by the exact kind of person you’re talking about.
It’s definitely a shame that they don’t give him a chance because of his start but life would be very boring if we all felt the same way and liked the same things. Personally, I’m not a Sam fan and was a David Hewlett fan decades before I became a Rodney fan so I don’t think his unlikable (I really need to watch that episode and judge for myself) introduction would matter to me.
It’s a shame but everyone is entitled to their own feelings and there’s lots of Rodney people around to rant to when it bothers you!
