A little collage-birthday card for the JessLupe truthers server pride event. Prompt was birthday (click to enlarge!)

Lupe's birthday is approaching and she's been very explicit she doesn't want to celebrate or get any presents. Jess and Esti, shockingly, try to respect her wishes but they can't help themselves and make her something. They figure if it's something little that they make together, Lupe won't be too mad. So they combine their crafty skills and make her a birthday card using cuts from magazines and old birthday cards, and pictures of their faces Lupe has taken over the years (unfortunately, all Lupe's pictures they find are of her scowling, which is fitting anyway since this is how she feels about birthdays). Esti is very proud of their work and is convinced Lupe will love it right away. Jess knows she will pretend to hate it but will keep it in her especial things box. She's not very worried though, she knows Lupe will forget all about her birthday when she gives her the real present, when they're both alone in their bedroom. (When Esti asks why Jess is using random pictures, Jess says it's a secret message for Lupe. Esti looks at it for a long time and doesn't really understand the secret part, she thought everybody knew already?) Esti's message translation: Dear Lupe, Happy birthday! I know you didn't want any presents, but please don't be mad, it's rude not to give presents, even if it's just a card. We made it with Jess for you. It was my idea but Jess insisted in using that picture of your face, she says it's "hilarious". I hope you like it. I love you!

Hey idk if your asks work anymore but I was wondering about QotSA and what album I should listen to. I've only heard a couple of their songs and was considering of just doing a listen to their discography.

I’m always a fan of starting at the beginning :) Each album feels very unique from one another, but they all sound like QotSA, if that makes sense. The two albums I listened to before really getting into them were Songs for the Deaf (every single fan and I would recommend this one) and Era Vulgaris (underrated, apparently the most divisive before Villains, and my favorite). If I had to recommend a top three to listen to though, I would say their self-titled, Songs for the Deaf, and …Like Clockwork.

A little rundown of each album and then my faves from them under the read more:

Queens of the Stone Age (1998) is quintessential desert rock; it’s sludgy, heavy, and has likely taken psychedelics in the last hour. Like, every stoner QotSA fan I know is obsessed with this album. It’s an excellent blueprint for every follow up album. Josh Homme has his hands basically everywhere on this, from vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, and also producer. favorites: Spiders and Vinegaroons, You Can't Quit Me Baby, Regular John

Rated R (2000) is my least favorite lmao and also a favorite of the stoners. Heavy rock with punk influences, and very much a stoner rock album. This is one of two vocally collaborative albums, featuring bassist Nick Oliveri and vocalist Mark Lanegan (RIP grunge king). I don't have a lot to say other than I don't like 2/3 of the songs Nick sings on. favorites: In the Fade, Better Living Through Chemistry, The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret

Songs for the Deaf (2002) is just, the Queens of album of all time. It's what really solidified them as a mainstay in modern rock. It's a concept album of flipping through radio stations while driving out into the desert. Similar genre-wise to Rated R, but significantly better and stronger. This is the second album to have collaborative vocals, still featuring Nick and Mark. I don't like 3/4 of the songs Nick sings on, but the songs themselves work with the album and don't ruin the fluidity of it for me. Also, drums by Dave Grohl. That's a highlight in and of itself. favorites: God Is in the Radio, The Sky is Fallin', A Song for the Deaf

Lullabies to Paralyze (2005) has a lot of bluesy undertones, and is also just? kind of horny? It plays with the concept of like, children's fairy tales as a way to deal with the Problems™️. It's definitely darker but not like, in a way that's inaccessible and super uncomfortable. This was a bit of a slow grower on me. I love it, though, and it's overall pretty solid. Features the first full contributions from guitarist Troy van Leeuwen and drummer Joey Castillo. favorites: I Never Came, Someone's in the Wolf, Burn the Witch

Era Vulgaris (2007) is. Is. I saw someone refer to this the meth album, and I can't even disagree. It has a lot of bite to it, is more experimental (especially with electronics), and draws inspiration from all sorts of genres. It's considered """less easily accessible""" sound-wise but I think that's just a skill issue on everyone else's part. favorites: Misfit Love, Suture Up Your Future, I'm Designer

...Like Clockwork (2013) would probably be their magnum opus, in my opinion. There was a long stretch between albums because of Josh's health issues, which has influenced a lot of these tracks. It has the first full features of guitarist/keyboardist Dean Fertita and bassist Michael Shuman (my beloveds <3). Thematically dark, has the most amount of guest backing vocalists, and one of the most favorites: Smooth Sailing, Keep Your Eyes Peeled, I Appear Missing

Villains (2017) is so so divisive because of the more obviously stronger pop vibes. It's still a rock album, but it's one of the more dancier ones. This is the only album not produced by Josh, who brought in Mark Ronson. There is a noticeable difference in the way this album is mixed from the others, but I don't care about it personally. First full feature of drummer Jon Theodore. favorites: Head Like a Haunted House, Hideaway, The Way You Used to Do

In Times New Roman... (2023), the Divorce Album™️. Josh went through a crazy divorce, and uh, yeah, you definitely feel it in this. This one is the end of a trilogy and does encompass the sounds and themes of ...Like Clockwork and Villains really well, but with a lot of reminders of earlier albums. It's more guitar-driven and doesn't have any real slow down songs like previous albums. favorites: Sicily, Made to Parade, Straight Jacket Fitting

So yeah!! Like I said, chronology is always a good way to listen and I'd say that's a good choice, but if any of these stick out more to you, check them out first!! My personal top three are Era Vulgaris, In Times New Roman..., and self-titled. I would also recommend listening to Them Crooked Vultures, which was fronted by Josh with Dave on drums and John Paul Jones on bass.

good grief - their big hit off their second album. big in the uk, didn't really make as many waves elsewhere, but it's a really solid song anyway. one of those "upbeat tunes that's actually really fucking sad" ones

four walls (the ballad of perry smith) - well this one is about uh. perry smith. who was charged with the death penalty for killing 4 people in the late 50's. but it's less directly about him and more a discussion of the morality of the death penalty and capital punishment

snakes - burgeoning anxieties and the impulse to turn to easy outs, like ignorance or alcoholism, to escape the world's global problems

if you want some pop culture sprinkled on top:

icarus - greek mythology. i like this one because it addresses something that i feel isn't addressed enough in discussions of this myth, which is that icarus is a very young lad. less about the pride of the fall, and more about the inherent tragedy of that.

laura palmer - the whole song is a david lynch shoutout. i've never seen twin peaks myself but the song still slaps.

daniel in the den - christian mythology. discusses the biblical tale of daniel in the lion's den and links that up to themes of betrayal and family.

poet - this one's a double feature, referencing both william shakespeare's sonnet 18 and edmund spencer's sonnet 75. also one of my favorites.

send them off! - this is another one of my favorites of theirs. it's also been described by dan as "othello meets the exorcist" and it very much delivers there

if you want something uplifting:

joy - while bastille (understandably) has a bit of reputation as a band that makes sad music about sad things, they've definitely got some happier songs in their catalogue. pun intended cha ching. this one's one of their more straightforwardly happy tunes

survivin' - this was a song they wrote while they were touring and then felt weird about releasing once the panini hit because it felt a bit on the nose. they ended up releasing it anyway and i am so glad they did cause it's a mood

act of kindness - the "happy" part here is debatable but i'm gonna include it anyway. it’s when someone does something nice for you and that impulse Changes you way down deep you know???

warmth - one of those "the world's going to shit but at least we have each other" kinds of tunes

the anchor - one of those "the world's going to shit but you're the one fucking thing that's still keeping me here" kinds of tunes

give me the future - their latest single as of this writing and one of the more optimistic tracks in their catalogue imo! it's yearning, but it's also with a genuine hope for the future.

and LASTLY. because im going to take every chance i can to plug this band. im going to throw some collabs and covers at you because there's one thing this band does SUPER well and it's collabs and covers.

of the night - this is the big one. it mashes up rhythm of the night by corona and rhythm is a dancer by SNAP! and it's so good they still do this one live and it goes off every time.

no angels - a mashup of "no scrubs" by TLC and "angels" by the xx, poured into a strangely mournful tune with clips from the hitchcock movie psycho. doesn't sound like it should work but it does. kinda really does.

torn apart - with GRADES and lizzo no less!!! it's got two parts but they're both excellent listen to them both

weapon - collab with angel haze, dan priddy, and F*U*G*Z and one of my absolute favorites

remains - remix of their song "skulls" but featuring rag'n'bone man and skunk anansie that adds an entire new dimension to the song, really fucking excellent

old town road mashup - lil nas x's old town road meets lizzo's good as hell meets radiohead's talk show host meets talking heads' road to nowhere meets the osmond's crazy horse. "what the fuck that shouldn't work" i KNOW and yet here it is!! BLATANTLY BANGING!!!

we can't stop - one of the few times dan smith subtly changes the lyrics of the song he's covering (most of the time he opts to keep the original pronouns and the like, which is very nice to see). anyway this one mixes miley cyrus's we can't stop with eminem's lose yourself and billy ray cyrus's achy breaky heart. and also the lion king's i just can't wait to be king is there. yes i know it sounds batshit especially because the whole thing is surprisingly melodic and heartfelt and you know what it works.

anyone but me x nightmares - mashing up joy crookes' anyone but me with easy life's nightmares and absolutely one of my favorites.

bad guy mashup - how many songs can they include with the word "bad" in the title? we've got bad guy (billie eilish), bad decisions (bastille), bad romance (lady gaga), and bad blood (taylor swift). bastille even has a song called bad blood and they didnt use it. they used taylor swift's version. also the distinctive guitar riff from dick dale's misirlou is there.

so uhhh......am i non-🅱️inary????

like, i’ve been wondering for a bit, like a year or more idk. it’s hard to explain bc calling myself nonbinary isn’t necessarily important to me; my gender identity isn’t that important to me* but every time i’m asked my gender on a school/medical survey i sorta cringe but always go with female bc it feels safer (or just “prefer not to say”). but a lil part of me still says “no!! not right!!!” but it doesn’t feel relevant enough to click the non-binary option? & also i don’t know what the consequences of choosing non-binary might be in certain contexts, bc as we all know transphobia is unfortunately Alive and Well in this world. female just feels like a comfortable safe default (and male is an obvious no for me)

(*actually a better way of looking at that would probably be that having others perceive me how i perceive myself isn’t that important to me, like i’m fine being labeled a girl/woman if the situation is such that i wouldn’t feel comfortable pointing anything out to the contrary & i’m cool w being called a daughter/granddaughter/niece/girlfriend/etc)

ig nonbinary is an umbrella term that just means “outside of the binary” which itself falls under the umbrella term transgender which is not identifying as the gender you were assigned at birth. but like what does that even mean, your assigned gender at birth? i’m afab and was raised female but was not shoved into any overbearingly “female” roles. i remember having two cars for my barbies/bratz dolls; one was a lavender colored 2008ish VW Beetle, and the other was a scarlet 2008ish Mustang, and i’d play with whichever one fit my mood better that day. My mom sometimes seemed to take issue with me expressing interest in overtly “feminine” things like disney princesses and frills and tiaras, which made me feel weird about liking that stuff, plus i was fat my entire life since the age of like 7, which stunted my ability to feel feminine in many ways, or to feel allowed to be feminine at all. i never felt desirable or elegant or mysterious or gentle like how i saw other girls (very sapphic of me in hindsight); instead i felt clunky and awkward and repulsive and aimless and hopeless. A part of me really feels like my gender identity and expression are tied strongly to my experience being overweight, and yet another part of me wants to dig past all of that and find the real, raw answer; what i’d be like if i either didn’t grow up overweight or just wasn’t bothered by it. like in Spirited Away and she’s trying to clear all the muck away from the river spirit...just wanna tie a rope to it and yank it out lol

i’ve dressed more femininely since i’ve weighed less in the past few years, but i also dress masc, especially for work. it’s more like i’m hiding my body less at this point (& a lot of that is just coming with age, not even the losing weight, i feel like. like i just care less about what others are thinking most of the time) And i’ve never been close friends with more overtly “feminine” girls - my best/close friends through the years have all been varying degrees of gnc (save for one but that friendship that was more out of proximity & ended,,,badly). i could never relate to the interests and thought processes of the “girly girls” but i don’t think i was even the “i’m not like most girls” type that much because i never let myself really consider myself a girl especially around girls like that. to them i was just the underdog

but i also think of like, what would i have been like, gender identity-wise, if i’d had siblings? or if i grew up in a nuclear family type traditional household? a household that valued and enforced gender roles? or in the 1970’s? how would i feel then? and why do i feel like i need that frame of reference to understand how i feel now, who i actually am, lmao. why does it matter?

i also really crave validation and praise for the more feminine parts of me when it comes to others feeling romantic or sexual feelings for me, but i can’t tell if that’s wanting reassurance of my gender, or reassurance that i am attractive and desirable? i love being in a pretty flowy dress and in brightly colored makeup and 3” heeled boots but i also love my button downs tucked into wranglers and wearing my steel toed scratched up wolverine boots and i’ve strongly considered getting a binder jus to have it (titties too big to actually use it for extended periods of time) and i have a pretty masculine gait. and yes i’m very aware that presentation =/= gender always but they do feel very connected for me

Do you get allergies in the spring? No, I don’t have any allergies nor do we have spring. What is your biggest pet peeve? I have a number of ~big pet peeves but one I can think of in particular right now are people who are constantly late to everywhere they have to be. That, and unresponsive groupmates when it comes to schoolwork. What is one thing you want to do before you die? See Beyoncé in concert. Who do you look up to? Out of all the people I know, Andrew. He’s been through some tough waves, but it’s never destroyed his soul and he’s never used it as an excuse to be cruel to everyone. I have a lot of love and respect for him. What is your favorite brand of bottled water? As much as possible I avoid bottled water but if it’s the only available option, I tend to look for Summit because it tastes the purest out of the cheaper brands I know. Are you a healthy person? I honestly don’t know if I’m constantly well because I live healthily without being aware of it or because my immune system is just simply crazy defensive. I guess I can call myself healthy in a sense that I rarely get ill and I’ve never had any serious health issues; but I'm not healthy in that I maintain a certain diet or go to the gym. If you were to write a story, what would it be about? I’d write a biography on someone because it combines two of my interests – journalism and non-fiction. What color is your toothbrush? It’s maroon with some white accents on it. What is your favorite movie about? Two for the Road is about a couple who re-examines their many years as a married couple, with the film using their road trips and various cars to symbolize the different stages in their relationship. Good Will Hunting is a story of a young man who has had a very difficult life and eventually has to confront his past and himself in order to move on to his future. favorite story you wrote: fuck omg this is difficult lol! because I both criticize and love all my stories in equal measure, I honestly don’t write anything that i don’t love, that doesn’t give me butterflies / actual chest pain (from angst). I feel like I’m being asked to choose a favorite child lol. so I’ll try to justify these picks somehow... 

closest to my heart: soldier, go bravely on (also mentioned above). this is the fic that brought me back to writing fic, and to tumblr even! I was on hiatus (that I didn’t know was a hiatus because I had no intention of coming back) for six years before writing this fic. I wrote it so quickly after the got finale, it was such a passionate and fevered few days and it just sucked me back in to everything I used to love as a teenager. It was also a nice stretch out of my comfort zone, because of the dialogue (which was so tightly planned it’s ridiculous, I wrote the whole fic as a screenplay type thing first to make sure there wasn’t a single dialogue word not needed) and tv-episode style. It’s also such a wish-fulfillment fic that I can’t read certain parts without getting a bit teary. for all those reasons and more, this fic will always be so special to me. 

most proud of: wolf, circle north (jonsa, got, alternate season 7 & 8). this is the longest fic I’ve ever attempted and the number I’ve hours I’ve sunk into it is astounding and i should be ashamed.  It’s going to be obscenely long (my outline is 70+ chapters) and when I pull it off, best believe it’s going into a bound book so I can look at how thicc it is and be like, “I did that!” lol. The range of POVs is one of the most challenging but most rewarding part of this fic, and why I’m so proud of it. This is another wish-fulfillment fic for me, not just because it’s another fix-it fic but because I have been writing bits and pieces of this fic for about three years. I kept thinking of jonsa scenarios and little scenes I would have loved to see after season 6 and writing them in a little secret doc, just for me, as I never thought I’d write fic again. After writing “soldier” i had already broken my hiatus and I realized this fic was an actual possibility, so I put it out into the world. I couldn’t be more happy that I did that. Not only did it give me the chance to be in such an excellent, lovely fandom, but the feedback I get is so validating after having this be my secret little project for so long.  

most formative: Coffee & Cigarettes, (merthur, merlin bbc) I’m ashamed to list this and the merthurs reading this 100% want to kill me for having the audacity because it’s incomplete and hasn’t been updated since 2013 when there’s only one chapter left so what’s my excuse?  I call this the most formative for me because until I published this I didn’t really have a fic that people followed and liked, eagerly awaited updates for, and commented regularly on. I was writing a lot of one-shots and atla stuff on tumblr (I used to RP lmao I was like 15 ok?) This was the first time I experienced so many fic-life things, like being excited to get AO3 emails, etc. This was the first time I started to really focus on character which is so important to me now, my writing is completely character driven. Not to mention Merlin and Arthur’s dumbassery and sheer attraction and denial is just... *chef’s kiss*

story you were most nervous to post: ummm idk I’m usually excited not nervous, since for me fic writing is just fun, I write things I’d enjoy reading and that I’m proud of. I read my own fics more than anyone else does, I guarantee it. am I a narcissist? who knows I guess I’ll say “soldier” again because I hadn’t posted fic in six years.

how you choose your titles: wow the hardest part of fic writing for me!!!!! thanks!!!!! lol. Okay so for my work titles, which are always terrible and I literally regret them immediately after posting, it’s usually just some words I play around with and string together that are somewhat thematic and related to the work... they’re always terrible lmao, I hate making titles. I mean, look at “soldier, go bravely on” and “wolf, circle north” for god’s sake, I hate them lmao. But I have to pick a title to post, so!!! For chapter titles and one-shots I’ll usually go with a song lyric, and especially for my chapter titles I spend so long seeking out the perfect one that reflects some thematic or emotional content of the chapter somehow. I’m very proud of my chapter titles for wolf, circle north. I have a doc on my scrivener just for chapter titles that I created in the very early stages of writing it, where I just dumped HUNDREDS of song lyrics that I thought I might use. Then by them I wrote some scenarios where they could work. here’s a screenshot:

It’s so helpful now. Sometimes posting an update will take an hour more than necessary because of me going through that doc, finding the perfect lyric. 

do you outline: OH, DO I OUTLINE... Hell Yeah, I outline. I couldn’t live without outlining. I love outlining. My outlines have outlines. I’m a planner centric, calendar centric, bullet-journal bitch so of course I love outlining. In all seriousness though: I write out of chronological order. I feel my writing is best when I write the scene I’m in the mood to write- unfortunately this scene could be ten chapters down the line from the chapter I’m gonna post next. This is the biggest reason outlining is necessary for me. If I didn’t have an outline, my story would be a non-post-able mess. 

I wasn’t kidding when I said my outlines have outlines. For wolf, circle north I have, um, a few. Character/location centric outlines where I bullet every scene that needs to happen for that plot to happen cohesively (these were all more or less completed before I even started writing the fic), then a “loose” outline that I copy everything from the other outlines into for some semblance of chronological order, then a Polished Final Outline that I write from. I know that sounds psychotic. It’s how my brain works. Some photo evidence/explanation:

Then, because scrivener is awesome, I get to see this outline in the corkboard view (I input every scene as a card) and so I get to see every part of my outline as a Synopsis on the right hand side of the doc where I’m writing the scene:

I can’t say when or if any of these will see the light of day, because my priority is my WIPs and my original writing. so (for those who i told about this blog from the tabby blog) my boss from the job i’ve had since 2013 very sadly passed away from a 2 year long battle with cancer back in september. prior to his death, we merged with another firm so that all the work could get done, and when he went on hospice in august the decision was made to close down the original firm, so that meant that the office would be emptied and everything. one thing my old boss, his name was Ed, I figured it’s not really worth keeping secret since he’s passed on and now knows full well I’m posting about him lol, told me on my first day was “the most important thing to remember, every day, is to check on the plants and water them, we like having things growing in this office.”  This particular plant was the bane of my existence, in a loving way. It was so massive and so unpredictable when it came to when it would need watering, the only place it sat in the office was right in front of my desk so i’d have these giant leaves all up in my business all day long, one day my coworker and i decided to measure how much it’d grow just from us dumping our water bottles in it at the end of the day... it was like this plant was the office pet lol. 

the superintendant of the office building was going to throw out all the plants in the office. after he threw out two of them, I was so upset and horrified so I grabbed all the smaller plants I could from the office and took them home that night, they’re currently living happily at my place. This one however (as well as a ficus, but this plant is the focus of this story) was way too big and heavy to take on the LIRR and the subway, so I decided instead to ask my new boss if I could bring it to the new office, and he said go for it. 

I started working at this job in 2013, and this plant was there and had been there for a while before me. Not once, not EVER did I see it bloom. We had another one, a smaller one (that was one of the ones I took home) that would bloom randomly all the time, but not the Big Boi. Before I left for my holiday vacation I was watering the plants, making sure everyone was doing well, and went home. I came back this week and suddenly, after over six years of me staring at this plant every single weekday for at least eight hours a day without so much as a speck of pollen, this big ol’ bloom showed up. and idk. it’s a plant, but i feel like Ed’s saying “thanks for saving my plants” and it’s a lot. I’ve been really upset about him dying for months, like deadass randomly crying and shit (he was like a father figure/grandpa figure since he had so many of my grandpa’s mannerisms but his kids are only like 10-15 years older than me lol). And while I’m still sad, it’s kinda cool thinking he’s saying hello right now.

Little life update (I guess this is aimed at ppl who have been following me for a while but whatever floats your boats)

Idk if it’s interesting to y’all but I am gonna quit my current dead-end call-center job and I found an ok job (tutoring) to replace it with, I’m gonna be a little tighter on money because I will have less hours (but a bigger hour salary, tricking me into thinking I am more valuable!) but I can’t do this anymore and everytime I go to work I am scared that I am gonna break in tears or something because I can’t deal with rude-ass babyboomers yelling at me anymore! My mental health is terrible lately and I figured that having that stress bundle gone could be helpful. I am always worried about money anyways so I think I can handle a little less. It’s a big change for me because I had the same job with pretty much the same schedule for the last 3 years. So yeah I am excited to start this new thing but I am not very comfortable with change in general in my life so it’s still very stressful and I just can’t wait to be in a new routine that includes helping kids to learn and do homework instead of calling people to be potentially yelled at.

Also I am really starting to get more stressed about my future in general because I have no idea about what I want to do with my life and my studies (film major) aren’t leading me anywhere so I’ll have to pick a new program at some point and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

But yeah at least I am in a good place socially speaking, I have awesome friends and a even more awesome boyfriend (we’ve been together for around a year now) so it makes it easier to deal with the V O I D lmao

I am also participating in organising an environnemental campain on my campus but also in my country in general and I really enjoy it. I had to take a break from organised activism for the first time this fall (I was doing student union stuff since like 2013) and I’m starting to do it again but slowly to avoid burning out like I almost did a few months ago. I am trying to grow out my hair (how symbolical, I know) for the first time ever and it’s tedious but Idk I don’t really have buzzcuts impulses like I used to so idk it feels like a good time to try longer hair for once.

He stayed with me the whole time, and, even though I told him it was possible I had mono, he risked it and still kissed me. 

I don’t blame him for not having feelings for me after that. I think we rushed in and were caught up in the obsession, which lasts about 4 months. I was sure of my emotions, and he wasn’t. It’s ok.
