hey! i really love your gifs, especially the performance ones. could you do a little tutorial on coloring? or maybe you are using some premade psds that you could recommend? have a nice day!
hello! thank you so much!! ;; my gifs are done through a lot of trial and error and playing around with the adjustments to see what works best ;; there is no standard way to colour them :( but i do have a few adjustments i would usually add! it’s a bit long so i’m putting them all under the cut.
1. selective colour: adding more red and yellow if person in gif seems too pale/overexposed
Tumblr media Tumblr media
just remember CMYK and RGB. CMYK stands for cyan, magenta, yellow, black while RGB stands for red, green, blue. cyan “pairs with” red (CMYK, RGB), magenta with green (CMYK, RGB), yellow with blue (CMYK, RGB), black with white.
say for example you are gonna add more cyan to the red colours you have in your gifs, you have to, of course, move the cyan slider to the right, moving to the left gives you more red, since cyan “pairs with” red.
you don’t necessarily always have to add red and yellow. sometimes the video gives you too much yellow, you can adjust the yellow slider to add more blue to neutralise it.
to make it more clear:

i want to add more red on minhyuk’s face here so i will just go to the red selection and slide left on the cyan slider to get more red:

very subtle but there is really a difference.
i also like to go to the neutral selection on selective colour and add more black to darken the neutral colours if the person is really overexposed on the gif.
2) colour balance.
you can use colour balance to neutralise colours too. i feel like colour balance isn’t as subtle so i don’t use it that much. changing colours too much pixelates the gif for me i dont really know why but that’s what i’ve been observing :(
in this cute hyunsik gif you can see a tint of red on it

after adding colour balance to reduce the red:

the red is removed!
3) levels
i read up on levels and there are a lot you can do but i basically just use it to add contrast lol
Tumblr media
just move the slider to the right
Tumblr media
4) hue/saturation
i usually use hue/saturation to darken the gif!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i also use it to reduce saturation, good for when there are too much colours and you just want it to be toned down.
5) gradient map
i use gradient map like a filter hahaha
for example when i add a “blue filter”, changsub looks like this:

when i add a “pink filter”

for comparison:

you have to change the opacity! also these are very minor differences but i feel like sometimes it changes the ~feel~ of the gif (probably not on this gif) and you are also able to achieve some effects you might like without manually doing it. there are a lot of gradient map to choose from so just play around with it!
6) colour fill
confession: i don’t really know how to use this haha but i have like 2 standard colours i will use to add layers to the gif if i find them very ~flat~ lol (i might have downloaded psds and liked the effect)
Tumblr media
colour fill: #2b2b2b, #171717
you can add more contrast with levels at this point so the gifs can both feel layered and contrasted:

7) exposure
i rarely use this but i find it kinda helpful! there are 3 settings:
exposure: brighten or darken gif
offset: slide to the right to add a “white” layer, left to create really dramatic contrast
gamma correction: creates nice contrast
8) curves
you can use it to brighten (moves curve up) or darken gif (moves curve down) but the effect is kinda different from exposure idk how to explain this ;; i also sometimes use it to add extra red/yellow/blue
in this gif i want to highlight minhyuk’s red hair

adding red:

at this point you might doubt if there is really a difference there is ok u_u hahaha next you can add colour balance to remove the red on minhyuk’s face.
most of the time i just go with curves > levels > selective colours > hue/saturation > curves > gradient map > levels > maybe colour balance and just trying other adjustments until i see something i like.
thats all i think!! i’m not good at this at all it’s really just a lot of testing around to see what you will end up with and whether you will like them ^_^ just play around with all the adjustment layers! a lot of times whether it will come up nice also depends on the video quality, speed, saved settings etc.
