True Beauty: Kang Sujin character reconstruction
They did out bestie so dirty in this drama, it's time to clean up writer's mess. I don't think Sujin ever deserved such overkill. Turning her into a villain way after the opportunity window closed was so pathetic. Massacring this heroine in such a clichĂŠ way calls for serious damage repair, so let's goooo.
Disclaimer: I'm not a writer and this is my first fic ever. English is not my first language, sorry for eventual mistakes. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it.⥠the story sounds better in my head but what can we do Thanks @youlookprettywithoutmakeup for sending in a request for Seojun x Sujin content. Also a big thank you to the gifmakers who blessed us all with this inspirational seojun x sujin perfection!
TW: angst, losing friends, mentions of bullying, verbal violence and family abuse
Seojun x Sujin angst
After Sujin moved to the States, the real truth behind that bullying video came out. It was never Sujin's doing, but she left all her friends believe what they wanted. Her life was pretty much crumbling down from the abuse back home and her parents' divorce lawsuit. It felt like the whole world turned its back on her. The final blow was when Seojun accused her of posting that bullying video of Jukyung. Then Jukyung facing her about it, too. Being the only one who's always had her friends' backs, she was hurting more than ever.
- Fine, Seojun, let it be me. Does it even matter? I'm the bad guy. Nobody trusts me. Not even you. I could bend over backwards defending myself for something I never did and it won't change a single thing.
- Something you never did? Get over yourself, Sujin. I know how you feel about Suho.
- Wait, do you seriously think I'd do something as disgusting as that because of a guy?
Seojun smirked hearing those words, shaking his head in disbelief.
- And since when do you think I have feelings for Suho??? Don't you know me?
- Obviously I don't.
They stood there, staring at each other in silence. Sujin's heart was breaking into a million pieces, but she wasn't showing any emotion. Seojun was cruel, even if he didn't mean to be this way. His constant hot and cold behavior towards Sujin confused her, but after he started showing interest in Jukyung, she gave up on him.
-Sujin, I went to Yongpa High, none of those girls knew a thing about the video.
- Wow, congrats! You must be proud of yourself. Trusting Jukyung's bullies... Seriously?! Like you don't know their queen bully is into you.
- Just like you're into Suho. I saw you two hugging.
- You saw that?!
- Yes! I did!
- Then you saw me crying like an idiot too. Great.
- Wait... What?
- I quit the music academy, okay?
- Are you crazy? Why would you do that?
Seojun stood there, his eyes wide in confusion. He couldn't believe his ears. How could she not tell him any of this sooner? After all they've been through. After all those moments she helped him get over their friend's death. Weren't they close enough now, why wouldn't she confide in him?
- You don't know everything, so don't act so smart. Besides, Suho isn't even my type, you pabo. He just saw me crying at the staircase.
- Then explain one thing.
All she could think about was how did she end up in this mess. Now all of a sudden he wants to talk to her? And he's acting all innocent about it.
- I have nothing to say to you, Seojun. Even your lousy accusations can't touch me. If anyone ever did anything bad then it's you chasing a taken girl.
- I wasn-
- Let me know when you stop projecting your problems on others.
- No, you got it all wrong, I don't have feelings for Ju-
- Stop it. I'm tired of this. I don't even care anymore.
He looked at her in silence, heart hurting as well. He couldn't admit his feelings to her like this, not now. He knew he did so many stupid things to catch her attention, but he didn't think it would backfire like this. He also knew something wrong was going on, but her stare was hurting him. He couldn't read her face at all. She looked cold. Serious. He felt like her eyes were literally piercing him.
- I did it. Okay, Seojun? I did all of it. Go spread the word. Oh wait, you did that already.
Frustrated and disappointed, she confirmed the rumors. She didn't want to fight back anymore. It was the first time in her life she considered giving up for a change. Like it mattered, she'd be moving to the States soon. She has already lost everything and everybody she hold dear. This was the last time two of them talked before she left Seoul.
She never told Seojun about her father beating her, she was ashamed of that. She also never told him her father was against her attending the music academy, she was scared that if she ever started talking about it she'd end up telling him everything. Suho was the only one who knew about her family situation, but only because he saw her bruises one time and asked her about it. He promised to keep her secret and she never confined in him again after that. All three of them have been friends since early childhood and she didn't want to do something that might push either of them away.
Sujin was always an artistic soul. She was great at pretty much everything once she set her mind to it. Her singing skills were always advanced, even before she started classes at the music academy. She outperformed almost all of her seniors. No matter the talent, she had to quit singing. Father's orders.
"Singing won't get you to medical school, you're only worth as much as your grades, don't show up home until you come to your senses and quit that idiotic nonsense of yours."
So she quit at the time only to save herself from unnecessary pain. She was done with covering her face full of makeup for school and popping painkillers like candy. It was much easier to quit, at least until her mom got them both out of that mess finally.
Her mom managed to get a divorce eventually. She swore she'd take care of her daughter properly this time, so winning the lawsuit against Sujin's father played a crucial role this time. And she won, which left her with their huge family mansion worth billions of dollars. Sujin's father got a restraining order from court, and after the lawsuit they never heard from him again. Her mom sold everything and they both moved to the States, where Sujin enrolled in music academy once more. Their life was pretty much comfortable, but they've always stayed humble.
Sujin knew she had to go back to visit her friends at Seoul at some point, especially since she was getting so many texts and calls from her two ex besties ever since she left. News on what actually happened and who was behind the video incident spread like fire and cleared all guilt off Sujin. Yet she couldn't get over the fact that all of her friends judged her so quickly. Sooah disappointed her a lot, she never backed her up, not even once. While Jukyung surprised her more than anyone. She was the only one who never believed Sujin did anything wrong, not even when Sujin directly told her it is her doing.
Even though she wanted to spend hours on the phone with Jukyung, and let her know about everything what happened, cutting everyone off seemed rational for the time being. Everything was still too painful for her and she needed more time to heal from the chaos. Falling into unhealthy patterns was no longer an option. Sujin's habits have changed drastically ever since she moved to the States. Volunteering as a math tutor and martial arts teacher was all she did when she wasn't studying. Her taekwondo classes took place in the early mornings, and math classes in the evenings. Slowly, it got her thoughts back in order.
It wasn't until Seojun texted her a whole month after moving that she felt that pit in her stomach again.
Seojun: I'm sorryx Sujong I shoudlvew known
- What's with this pabo? Ah, he's drunk again.
Sujin: Hey Seojun, I hope you're good. I know you've sent me that txt accidentally. Stay well and take care. Don't drink and ride that Ninja of yours, ok?
A few days passed until he finally responded back.
Seojun: Where r u, I need 2cu. Sujin: I'm out of the country, actually. Let's catch up over a video call one of these days, ok? Seojun: Naah, txt me whn u get back :P
She wanted nothing more than to talk to him, to hear his voice. She needed him to be there for her, just like she used to be there for him long ago. If going back there was ever an option, she needed to get better fist, on her own. Thoughts of being back in the city where it all went downhill made her extremely uncomfortable. Besides, her feelings for Seojun confused her, it was too much all at once. This time, she decided to let him go for good. Maybe next time their paths cross, things turn out different.

White Tulips - Cut Chapter
Hey Everyone. I hope who ever reads this is happy and healthy. So I wrote this idea for my Han Seojun x Kang Sujin fanfic but it didnât really fit the story at the time, even though I had set it up in the published story twice, so I cut it. But I still loved this idea so I wanted to share it here.Â
I would have shared it earlier but I was trying to get the Joseon Era AU started before that but man, have I been struggling with that story. Writing historic fanfic is HARD! Anyway I still wanted to leave this here. Hope you all like it.Â
Pairing: Kang Sujin x Han Seojun
Word Count: 1.7kÂ
Rating:Â Slightly Mature... or maybe PG 15? I dunno. I am bad with ratings
i.
For all of his flaws, Han Seojun had one thing going for him. He was unashamed. Unashamed of his slight lack of academic intelligence, unashamed of his troublemaker persona, and definitely unashamed of losing to Kang Sujin at everything imaginable.
âAh-nee, how could you get so good at basketball?â He panted, pulling up his shirt to wipe his brow, not because he was sweaty, but because he wanted Sujin to stare at his abs.
âI was always good, Han Seojun.â Sujin said proudly, holding the basketball by her waist as she unabashedly eyed his abs. âI told you, I was just off my game that day.â
âYou were distracted by my face.â Seojun smirked.
âOf course, I was. I had a massive crush on you.â She grinned, kissing him.
âOoooh, chagi, you had a crush on meee.â Seojun teased like a school boy who had discovered her most embarrassing secret.
âWeâre practically married.â Sujin pointed out dryly, the fact that they had been together for over a year now.
âStill.â Seojun grinned.
âDoesnât change the fact that I finally did beat you.â Sujin countered.
Seojun didnât tell her that he had let her win today. Her loved her competitiveness and the giddy way she grinned when she won. If Seojun could, he would let her win everything her heart desired. But this he would never tell her, mostly because she would kill him. And Seojun really wanted to live, especially now that he had someone else to live with.
âTechnically, weâre at a draw. You only cancelled out your win from back then.â He stated. The two had started packing their things. Sujin dumped her water bottle in their gym bag.
âOh yeah? Well, Iâm about to win this argument.â Sujin grinned an evil grin, leaning closer. She spoke in a sing-song voice, âI know your big secret.â
âOh yeah? Whatâs that?â Seojun smirked. He was an open book, there was nothing he ever hid from anyone. And even if he did, there was nothing he was ashamed of.
Sujin took out her phone and pressed play.
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo,
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo
Really? Yes! Okey dokey yo
Say la la la la la la la la la la la
âTold you I would find out.â Sujinâs evil grin spread wide as Seojunâs smug smile wavered.
Oh no.
It turned out that here indeed was one thing that Han Seojun was ashamed of.
âYa, Kang Sujin!â Seojun went for her phone but she bounced out of his way, skipping backward.
âWhatâs wrong, Seojun-ah? Donât like this song?â She asked in mock innocence.
Oh God, the horror. The pain, the anguish! The embarrassment!
âYa! Come here!â Seojun ran after her and she sprinted away from him, running around the court. âStop playing that!â
âNo way. This is my new favorite song.â Sujin shouted back breathlessly as she ran full speed. Seojun caught up with her and she squealed and laughed as he held her by the waist.
âAre you not going to stop?â He didnât lunge for her phone. Instead opted to tickle her, making her squeal some more, laughing uncontrollably.
âI cave! I cave!â She said, her eyes tearing up from the laughing.
Seojun took her phone and turned off the song. Sujin was red from laughter and Seojun felt an ache to kiss her then and there. But he didnât want to encourage her triggering the PTSD he had from that embarrassing incident in high school.
âLim Jukyung is such a traitor. I canât believe she told you.â
âIâm your girlfriend. Of course, she told me. Shouldnât I know you were dancing around half naked in front of another woman?â Sujin wiped the tears from her eyes, still shaking from the aftershocks of laughing.
âAish! That was so embarrassing. I never want to remember that happened.â Seojun admitted, going red as he thought back to when he had been dancing around in his house, wearing nothing but his underwear and had failed to notice that Lim Jukyung had been there with his sister the entire time.
âWaeeee? I find it funny.â And then she burst out laughing again. Han Seojun walked away in a huff. He couldnât face the embarrassment any longer, especially not in front of Sujin.
âIâm sorry, Iâm sorry!â Sujin chased after him.
Han Seojun would have buried the incident again, along with his memory of that song but then there it was again.
That dreaded song.
They were having lunch with everyone; Jukyung, Suho, Taehoon, Suah and his squad with Chorong, when suddenly, he heard the tune faintly.
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo,
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo
Seojun thought he was imagining it. But then Sujin took out her phone and the song played clearer. That damn woman had set it as her ring tone.
That dreaded song.
âOops, getting a call. Be right back.â Sujin said with just enough pretend innocence that it passed off as sincere to others, but he knew. He knew.
Han Seojun glared at Jukyung accusingly and she made an apologetic face. Luckily, no one else seemed to pick up on Seojunâs discomfort. Suho did give him a pointed look but Suho knew that he did not have the privilege of making fun of Seojun the way Sujin did. And that wasnât a matter of Seojun getting mad at him. It was a matter of Kang Sujin destroying anyone who would say one syllable against her boyfriend.
âSujinnie,â Seojun pouted like a child that night as they made dinner, âI donât like your ringtone.â
Her phone had been ringing all day. A little too frequently, Seojun had noticed. It was almost as if Sujin had scheduled all of her calls to today just to mess with him.
âOh, should I change it?â She asked causally, âOkay, you pick something you like.â
Seojun grinned and padded over to the counter, setting her ringtone to one of his songs.
That night Seojun had gone to sleep thinking that chapter of his embarrassing event was over. He dreamed peacefully of being on stage and serenading Sujin with the songs he had written for her. But then his dream was interrupted with that jingle again.
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo,
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo
Seojun woke up with a gasp. No, it wasnât just his dream. The song was actually playing. Sujin stirred and shut off her alarm.
Her alarm that was set to play Okey Dokey.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooo! Seojun screamed in his head, cursing the storm he imagined himself drowning in. He loved Kang Sujin. He could never deny her anything, even if it led to his own torment.
But why, why out of everything she had to choose this.
Sujin got up, and didnât even notice Seojun stuff his head in his pillow as she went to the bathroom.
âHyung, are you okay?â One of his bandmates asked upon seeing Seojunâs dark circles and dead expression.
âHuh? Iâm okey, dokey.â He responded dreamily. The band member backed away in concern.
ii.
Ever since they had gotten close, Seojun had stopped challenging her. True, they would still tease and play the push-pull game but it wasnât like it had been before. Before they had felt like equals. Now it felt like Sujin had all the power and oddly enough, she didnât like that. She worried it might get too boring for Han Seojun. She worried it wasnât good for him to coddle her so much. He needed to have just as much of a say in things as she did.
She had meant the song to just stir some new challenge between them. He would respond with embarrassment and demand that she gets rid of the song. He would finally set a line for her; a restriction and she would comply to and balance would be restored. No longer would she be the one dictating everything.
But it had the opposite effect. Sujin hadnât realized how it was torturing him till she saw him jump when they passed by a store that had been coincidentally playing the song.
âItâs following me.â Seojun had hissed. Sujin became worried she had gone too far. She hadnât realized how much the incident had affected him.
Fortunately, Sujin knew what to do.
Come home early tonight. Sujinâs text came.
âIs everything okay?â He asked the second he entered. Sujin never asked him to be home early, knowing his busy schedule. He was lucky that his other band mate had gotten ill, and practice had been cancelled.
âYeah, gimme a minute!â Sujin called from their bedroom.
Seojun threw his jacket on the sofa and unbuttoned his sleeves, getting ready to make dinner. But then he froze.
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo,
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo
He groaned, âAaaaah, chagiiii! Geuman-hae already.â He turned and then froze again, dropping his phone on the floor.
In the door frame of their bedroom stood Kang Sujin wearing leopard print camisole and a blue bathrobe, striking an exaggerated dancing pose. The camisole reached just below her thighs. The rest of her long, long, long legs were available for him to gawk at.
Seojun gulped. Good God.
You ready?
I'm ready
Yea, okey dokey yo
Sujin began dancing to the song just like he had, singing along as she moved through the hallway with the graceful movements of a more practiced dancer. It was funny but all too captivating at the same time.
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo,
Is that true? Yes! Okey dokey yo
She came in and danced her way to the fridge, taking out a water bottle, and pouring it over her head.
Really? Yes! Okey dokey yo
Say la la la la la la la la la la la
She didnât have the chance to continue as Seojun picked her up in his arms. She squealed in joy as he kissed her.
âAh, Kang Sujin thatâs the sexiest thing anyoneâs ever done for me.â He said, leaning her over as she laughed.
Seojun forgot all about the song as he bridal carried a squealing Sujin to their room. They both fell down on the bed, laughing. Sujin ran a hand through his hair.
âHey, Sujinnie. Guess what underwear Iâm wearing today.â Seojun grinned.

random plot bunnies from my seojun x sujin brainrot on a fic that i might?? or may not write. based primarily from k-drama, following the webtoon plotline:
so, this is set in the future, maybe about five years in?? so theyre all 25 years old at this point and seojunâs a well-established idol (singer)
seojunâs nutritionist provided by the agency is going to resign because she's six-months in into her pregnancy and wanted to focus on raising her children
seojun feels a little disheartened at this point; a lot of the time, being an idol, the few constant things he could rely on was the same faces of the team that took care of him - because in other aspects of his career, he has to meet new people a lot, and his scene and environment changes so much
so this was lowkey a blow for seojun, who just wants every sense of familiarity, regardless how little, to sorta stay?? the same??
but he canât really have much say on it too, because a lot of the team members who took care of him which he has are provided by the agency, and he knows the agency will be doing placements for that too
but then his nutritionist sorta knows heâs a lil sad (sheâs become like a surrogate older sister for him) and sheâs like, âi have someone in my mind. sheâs... a little rough around the edges. sheâs been through a lot. but - she has a good heart. like you.â the nutritionist smiles, âi think the both of you could get along well!â
so the new nutrionist? thatâs our badass girl, kang sujin.
now sujin has already known that her senior wanted her to replace the position for han seojunâs nutrionist because her senior trusted her to do a good job, but sujinâs a bit queasy about the entire arrangement if sheâs honest
she wants to say no, but her senior has always been supportive and strict in ways thatâs got her shaped up to her best ability, and she just didnât have the heart to say ânoâ in the end
so on the day they met, seojun recognised sujin immediately, and sujin, at first, pretended that sheâs only met seojun for the first time
seojun consecutively tries to trigger some sort of reaction in sujin, but she deflects pretty well? every time he tries to confront her, sheâs like âhi mr. han seojunâ and âwhat can i do for you today?â
even during their private sessions while sujin goes over seojunâs daily food and nutrition intakes and adjusting new set of schedules for him, sujinâs all serious. sheâs gotten close to snapping at him - but then she quickly just, ânoooo :) im not mad :) what do u meanâ
after a while, seojun sorta lets it go and focuses back on training
his team is planning a tour, maybe even concerts outside korea, and seojunâs lowkey scared because even though heâs toured and flown to various countries to perform at this point, he still has the anxiety
he wants to be so good to his fans, wants to do his best now that heâs come so far to the point he essentially sacrifices a chance at a relatively ordinary life
but then, he starts overworking too
seojunâs never been the best dancer, you know; he could always make up for it with singing, but he still?? doesnt feel like itâs enough???
and then one day sujin just comes barging in at his apartment, mad, because seojunâs had a fever and couldnât train for two days now and turns out?? he hasnât really been eating as much as he should, or heâs not drinking as much as he should
that was the first time sujin showed any sense of familiarity from their high school days
she gave him a good whip, talks to his doctors, and adjusts his diet according to his schedules and for the next week, she sorta comes quite frequently to make sure even when heâs training, heâs doing okay
seojun comments that sheâs âscarierâ than his last nutrionist, and sujinâs like, âgood. it means youâll listen to me.â
one day, he starts asking her to stay just a while instead of just leaving, which she always does, and heâs like âhave a beer. what, you have a strict diet too?â and sujin reluctantly stays? even tho sheâs awkward and quiet
finally seojunâs like, âwhy did u pretend u didnât recognise me?â
and sujinâs just.... âdidnât you hate me?â referring to what she did to jugyeong (implying the k-drama events i assume?? but imma keep this vague as hell) and she just, âi did something horrible to the girl you love.â
and because this is seojun, esp their dynamics dkjhksdhf, heâs just straight up, âyeah. you were a bitch.â because to him, that was the facts, you know
sujin sorta stays quiet, but then she puts the beer down and like?? âi donât have to explain anything to you.â but seojunâs like!!!!! thats not what he meant!!! and hes just, âhey no! sit. you just started relaxing, right?â
but after a minute he comments under his breath, âi didnât know you were this sensitive.â
but then sujin quietly replied, âshe was my friend. i loved her too.â
and that sorta got the two of them quiet, but then seojun decided to change the topic because its Its_Too_Awkward.jpeg, âlast i heard u were gonna be a doctor. your dadâs professor Kang right? he treated my mom.â
and that sorta??? causes sujin to tense up, but then she deflects with a snappish, âwhy are you so interested in me?â âiâm not! iâm just asking questions.â âi should be asking you questions - why the hell did you think it was a good idea to pull the shit u did now that your touring schedule is in the talks? how are you supposed to perform if you canât even stand?â âaish, didnât you already nag me?â âyouâre so stupid, iâm scared youâve forgettenâ
they started bickering again but that night was really what triggered for sujin to be a little more relaxed with seojun, and for seojun to sorta - try a bit harder to?? not be friendlier, no, but he likes that heâs known her from an era in his life where he didnât have to always be a face in the screen.
more and more, seojun asks sujin to stay and have dinner after sheâs done evaluating his weekly meals and they have a better comradeship
he starts anticipating her more when she comes to evaluate another idol or something at the agency and heâs just!!!!!!! âyouâre here? why are you here? did u miss me already? what do u mean iâm not the only one youâre treatingâ
and then slowly we also found out why she didnât become a doctor (she didnât wanna follow her dad; and she still carries the guilt of what she did to jugyeong and admitted, more than the result of her fatherâs anger, she likes the version of her who always wants to help others - and, she can memorises easily, so... nutritionist didnât seem bad)
sujin starts bringing in board games or sometimes she sneaks a few of supermarket-brand goods since seojunâs been behaving with his meals and vitamin intakes, and the one time seojunâs invited to a tv show where it has quizes, she tutors him the whole night so he âdoesnt make a fool out of himselfâ
she also starts to keep up with whatever show heâs in, and sheâs always texting him that sheâs watched him with this horrible washed-out screenshot because she takes the photo on her laptop with her phone. and her texts are all âthe dance was goodâ and âyouâve improved that move huhâ and then sometimes âidiot. why did u answer like thatâ
sujin makes fun of her for not being able to take a clean screenshot, but he never really leaves her un-replied
and they started talking about relationships - how they were both so enamoured with suho and jugyeong respectively, and for sujin specially, how she canât wait to be loved by someone who can make her feel like suhoâs not a big deal at all
but then she admits she doesnât think she deserves to be loved, and sorta has this sad smile, and seojun confesses that heâs scared if he loves someone, he has to lose them due to his career
and theyâre really sad about it, but the night also isnât as bad cause they had each other
and ok i have a LOT more i think - and i honestly dk how nutritionist actually works BUT. yes. them.

White Tulips - a JunJin fanfic 3/3
Full Story:Â Part 1, Part 2
Hey my beautiful readers. Thank you so much for sticking around till now. I was honestly so terrified of posting this fanfic because I had never done that before but everyoneâs response has been so kind to me. Thank you.
This is the final part. I hope you all enjoyed the story. As always, this chapter is dedicated to the Shooters GC who are the best people on Tumblr.
Quick Info: The songs used in this chapter are You Were Beautiful by Day6. Park Yoona who plays Sujin said in an interview that she liked Day6, specifically this song. Haru by Royal Pirates is a personal favorite of mine. It has the same theme as True Beauty that in real love, things like looks donât matter. The final song that Seojun sings to Sujin is Half Moon by Dean. Hwang In Yeop who plays Seojun stated that he liked this song in an interview.
Pairing: Kang Sujin x Han Seojun
Romantic Trope: Haters to friends to lovers
Word Count: 16.2k [this one is LONG]
Rating: T
PART 3
i.
âWhat have I done?â Sujin pulled at her hair in frustration.
The deal she had made with Han Seojun had been the on account of the many shots of soju she had taken. It was only when she had sobered up the next morning that she realized, with horror, just what exactly she had promised.
It was a bad idea. On paper it sounded plausible; two people suffering from the same pain could empathize with each other. But in reality, going through a heartbreak meant that you needed someone to support you, not the other way around. Trying to support someone whilst being in pain yourself was hard. And in this particular case, it would be impossible. Mainly because the people Kang Sujin and Han Seojun liked were with each other. Â
Sujin could see her and Han Seojunâs fledgling friendship going up in flames before it had even had a chance to fly. She would always want to talk about Lee Suho and he would resent that since Suho was the one dating Jukyung. Seojun would want to talk about Jukyung and Sujin would find that annoying for the same reason.
It was a recipe for disaster.
âYah, gimme your number.â Sujin had demanded last night, handing Han Seojun her phone after he had agreed to her stupid proposal. Seojun had obediently entered his number at her behest. She programmed her number in his phone as well.
âThere. Now we can text each other if we ever need to talk.â
âYa, why am I Gangster in your phone?â Seojun had protested when he had saw her type it out.
Sujin had chuckled, drunk on soju. âBecause youâre a gangster, you gangster.â
âIs that so?â Seojun proceeded to type away furiously into his phone. He held it up for Sujin to see.
âPrincess? Are we kindergarteners?â Sujin had frowned.
Seojun stuck his tongue out. âThatâs what you get for naming me Gangster.â
Sujin had retaliated, editing his contact. âHere!â She held up her phone.
âWha-What? Twerp?â
Sujin blanked on the argument that had proceeded after this but she knew they did argue. To the point that the owner of the tent bar kicked them out.Â
Now Sujin was stuck with the contact named as Twerp on her phone and she had no idea what to do with it. Should she text him? Should she delete it? Should she just pretend last night didnât happen?
She knew she should choose the third option. Or even the second. But her hand itched to send Seojun a text and see if he really was up for hanging out.
All day long Sujin kept checking her phone, looking for any new messages or missed calls she may have received. All she got were some memes from Suah and everyone elseâs responses to those messages on their group chat. Han Seojun had also responded with a laughing emoji. Which meant he wasnât too body or occupied to text Sujin.
Then why wasnât he texting her?
Why do I care?
Sujin knew why. It was because she had no body else to talk to about what was bothering her. Normally, she would have called Jukyung but this time, she couldnât. Jukyungâs giant engagement ring kept flashing in her mind over and over. It even plagued her dreams last night.
Sujin needed to occupy herself. Her current jobless situation wasnât helping things either. She quickly fired a text to Suah to see if she was free to hang.
Sorry Kang Su! Me and Taehoon are going to visit his parents. Suah had replied.
Sujin looked at her list of contacts. There was no one else but Han Seojun who she could ask. Reluctantly, she texted him.
Iâm going to the batting cages. Wanna join me?
Sujin pressed send before she could stop herself and was immediately filled with deep regret she saw the âSeenâ check appear.
One minute, two minute, fifteen minutes passed. He didnât reply.
âGuess he wasnât interested.â Sujin lamented. It would have been nice to have someone to hang with, but given the obvious rejection, she had to make do with just lonesome herself.
Kang Sujin wasnât exactly a prodigy at sports, but she was considerably better than most. Batting happened to be one of her strong suits.
Thwack! Thwack! Thwack!
She hit each ball with graceful ease. Her brows were furrowed in focus. Her breathing controlled and steady. Sujin had learned long ago that sports aided in dealing with her rage and frustrations. It was a way to release all of her worries in a healthy manner and channel inner peace.
Thwack! Thwack!
She hit again and again, not caring about the score, just wanting to get the shot.
âWow, Iâm impressed.â
âHuh?â Sujin carelessly turned and her surprise at finding Han Seojun standing in the adjacent batting area was only thwarted by the ball hitting her in the torso. She yelped in pain.
âOh, gwenchana?â Seojun asked in concern.
âAish.â Sujin held her side and moved out of the way of the pitching machine. She gave Seojun a scathing look. âWhat are you doing here?â
âYou asked to meet here didnât you?â
âPeople normally respond to invitations to confirm theyâre coming.â Sujin checked herself for injuries before resuming her batting position.
Seojun was quiet. âI wasnât sure whether I wanted to meet you.â
Thwack! Sujin hit a ball. âOh, yeah? What made you change your mind?â
Seojun picked up his bat, not responding. The pitching machine on his lane whirred to life. He hit his ball. Thwack! âDid you see the video Jukyung posted?â
âAh-nee.â Sujin replied. Thwack!
âShe posted a bridal makeup tutorial.â
Sujin missed the next ball. And the one after that. Seojun could feel her gaze on his back but didnât dare turn. From his posture Sujin could sense hostility. Which was fine, she hadnât invited him here to talk. She invited him here to vent. She resumed her batting.
âI scored higher than you.â Sujin informed with a grin once they were done.
âGood for you.â Han Seojun said, unimpressed.
He still seemed on edge. Sujin had tried to engage him during their small breaks between the game but all he had given her were clipped answers.
âDid you watch the entire video?â
âYes.â
âHow did it feel?â
âHow do you think I felt?â
âDo you wanna talk about it?â
âJust hit the ball.â
Sujin didnât know how Seojun was when they had parted, but she herself felt significantly better. She went home with a peaceful mind and even discovered that she had gotten a call from a prospective employer. They asked if she could come in for an interview the following week. Perhaps things would be getting better from now on.
Or perhaps not.
The interview had gone horribly wrong, especially after the interviewer realized who she was. Sujin had expected a polite rejection but instead the interviewer had decided that she deserved a lecture on bullying from him.
âYou know. I was bullied too as a kid.â The interviewer had said.
The experience had left her shaken. Was this going to be her life from now on? Would she just be kicked out of society just like that, over a badly reported gossip article?
Sujinâs hands ached to be washed but she refused to even think about it. She needed an outlet and she knew exactly what she wanted. It was then that she got a text from Han Seojun.
Letâs meet.
Sujin told him where to show up.
âYou know jujitsu?â Seojun was surprised when she had invited him for a match.
âDonât you?â Sujin said, clad in her white Gi. She had been warming up when Seojun had arrived clad in jeans and a hoodie. He had a cap on underneath the hood.
âI donât fight with girls.â
âAnd what if a girl fights with you?â
Seojun chuckled incredulously.
âIf you can laugh like that then you can show me what youâve got, no? Or are you afraid youâll lose like you lost in the batting cages.â
âThat wasnât a competition.â
Sujin smirked, âSure it wasnât.â
Seojun rolled his eyes and went to change out of his clothes.
Smack! Down Han Seojun went. He had gone easy on Kang Sujin for the first round because she was a girl. But she had immediately disarmed him and thrown him over her shoulder. Grinning like a wolf, she immediately took the fighting position again, leaving Han Seojun to recover on the floor.
âFirst one doesnât count!â He argued.
âWhatâs wrong, Han Seojun? Canât even fight against a girl?â
Seojun got up, âAlright. I wonât be going easy on you anymore.â
âFine by me.â
Sujin attacked first, Seojun quickly blocked her, wrapped his arms around her waist and tried to push her down. She wrapped her legs around him and swiveled him around so that he fell. Then she quickly wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling at his arm.
âYou fight without strategy.â Sujin said through clenched teeth as she tried to keep him down. Seojun managed to turn her entire body over, releasing himself.
âFighting is about instinct. Not strategies.â Seojun went for the attack this time. Sujin blocked him but he easily maneuvered around her, throwing her down and pinning her in place with all his strength. It was an awkward position to be in, but he didnât care. He would not let her win.
âAnything without a strategy is doomed to fail.â She grabbed his collar and adjusted her leg to flip them over. Now she was keeping him down.
âNope. Instincts always win.â He weaseled out of her grip and they parted.
Sujin took fighting position again. She easily jabbed and smacked him around while Seojun blocked haphazardly. She was precise and focused, knowing exactly where to hit and how.
In her mind, she wasnât fighting with Han Seojun. She was fighting with her interviewer. She jabbed and blocked and kicked the man who had sat and judged her without even hearing her side of the story. It was cathartic to let this all out. And if Han Seojun got hurt in the way, then she didnât mind.
Sujin and Seojun fought for a long time, both sweating and panting with exhaustion but neither relenting.
âIâm still winning Han Seojun.â Sujin said with labored breath.
âWeâre not done yet.â
Smack! Down Han Seojun went. Again, and again, and again.
âHad enough?â Sujin asked as they parted.
âNever.â
Seojun attacked. Sujin easily blocked it, kicking him in the chest. The mat was slick with their sweat. Sujin didnât see Seojun slip and fall to his knees. She only spun around to deliver a roundhouse kick to his torso. But the kick would have hit him in the face. Except, except Han Seojun caught her ankle just in time. The force of it nearly knocked him down.
âI canât let you hit my face.â He said with a half smirk.
âWae?â She asked with a flick of her brow.
âItâs a precious commodity.â
He pulled Sujin by her ankle, bringing her leg to his side. She fell on him, using his shoulders to brace herself. Their noses were almost touching. He cupped her calf and grabbed her sleeve to hold her in place.
It was too close. Sujinâs mind went blank. And that was the opening Seojun needed to throw her down.
âI won that round.â He grinned, standing up.
âDoesnât matter. Iâm still ahead.â Sujinâs face still felt hot. She got up and straightened her Gi. âI think thatâs enough for today.â
Seojun nodded. âYou hungry?â He asked. After the workout she had just had, she was ravenous.
They went to a nearby convenience store where they got ramen. Seojun watched in surprise as Sujin hungrily chowed down.
âWhat?â Sujin asked.
âYou are a very unexpected girl, Kang Sujin.â Seojun took off his cap and ran his hand through his hair.
Sujin smiled and stirred her ramen. âSo, what happened this time?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âWhyâd you ask to see me today? Did Jukyung post another video?â
Seojun hesitated. âLast time⌠I was in a bad mood. But you seemed like you wanted to talk.â
Sujin gave a slow smile. âWhat? You felt guilty?â
âYes.â Seojun said unabashedly.
âYou know we donât have to talk. Maybe we can just keep each other company.â
âSure. That seems fine.â Seojun looked at her critically. âBut something was bothering you today.â
Sujin bit her cheek. âI had an interview today.â
âDidnât go well.â It wasnât a question.
Sujin told him, about how her interviewer treated her. About how she feared she may never get a job again.
âAh-nee, how can people be so ridiculous? You already settled the matter didnât you? Then whatâs everybodyâs problem?â Seojunâs outburst warmed Sujinâs heart. It felt good to talk and share. It made Sujin feel lighter. She wondered if she could return the favor.
âYou didnât tell me what you thought of Jukyungâs video.â
Seojunâs face fell. âAh. That.â He leaned back and sighed. âDid you see it?â
âYeah.â
Seojunâs face was a strange combination of pain and admiration. âShe looked beautiful, didnât she?â
Sujinâs voice was small. âYeah, she did.â And Suho probably thought so too.
âTheyâve been together for so long. Marriage was inevitable. But now that itâs happening⌠I donât know. I just feel⌠honestly I donât even know what I feel anymore.â
âI know what you mean. I canât imagine how Iâm going to attend the wedding.â
âMy momâs inviting the two over for dinner to celebrate. Imagine having to sit through that.â
âYikes. Does your mom know how you feel?â
âOf course, she does. But Lee Suho is my best friend and sheâs happy for him.â
âWell⌠Iâm always here,â Sujin held up her phone, âjust a text away. If you need me.â
âWhat I need right now is more food.â Seojun got up.
âArenât idols supposed to diet?â
âNot when theyâve had their ass kicked twelve times. You want anything?â
âNah. Iâm full.â
While Han Seojun went inside, Sujin checked her phone for any messages and emails. She had applied to a dozen non-profit companies. None of them, except the interview today, had gotten back.
âOmo. Isnât that, that girl?â Someone said loudly.
âYah! Shhh!â
Sujin looked up to some mean looking high schoolers gawking at her. There were three of them but the one standing in the front was clearly the leader. The girls to her side was trying to keep her quiet but unsuccessfully.
âIt is! Look. Its that woman, Kang Sujin! Wah! I never thought Iâd meet someone I read about online in real life.â The leader girl came forward, crossing her arms.
Sujin stood up to her full height. The girl was shorter than her, but she was undeterred. Sujin half admired her courage.
âCan I help you?â Sujin asked in a measured tone.
The leader girl stared Sujin down. âCheck out her audacity. Should someone whoâs hated by everyone be talking like that?â The girl spoke in banmal.
âI donât know you. And you donât know me. So why donât you leave?â Sujin suggested. These kids were younger than her, although by not much. They looked like seniors who might have been held back a year or two.
âWhy should I leave? You leave.â
âI was here first.â
âThis is my usual place. My boyfriendâs coming here to meet me.â The girl said self-assuredly.
âThen let him come. Thereâs enough space for the both of us.â
âI donât think so.â The girl got right in her face. âYouâre the girl who seduced our Seojun Oppa, arenât you? Donât you know that you almost ruined his career by doing that?â
Sujin laughed at the thought of Han Seojun being someoneâs Oppa. He always seemed so childish to her.
âOh, you think its funny to ruin someoneâs career?â
Sujin tried to explain calmly, âNo, no. I wasnâtâ"
The girl pushed her, âWomen like you are everything thatâs wrong with the world!â
The old Kang Sujin would have kicked this rude girlâs ass by this point. But Sujin was trying to be a new Kang Sujin, one that didnât hate easily. Sujin sighed. âKid, just leave me alone.â
The girl poked her finger in Sujinâs shoulder. âAnd what if I donât?â
Sujin raised a hand and the girl flinched. But Sujin only stroked her head. âYoungster, you shouldnât be so rude to people.â
âLike you were to Lim Jukyung?â Sujinâs face hardened as the girl taunted, âWhat? You guys are friends now? Who would buy that bullshit? People are you are such trash. You go around flaunting your beauty, seducing our idols. Trash like you doesnât belong here.â
âYah, stop it!â The girlâs friends warned from behind.
âChaeri, youâll get into trouble.â
Chaeri didnât listen. âLeave! I donât want people like you here.â She told Sujin.
It was one thing to be nice. It was quite another to be weak. And Kang Sujin was anything but weak. âYou want me to leave?â Sujin said. âThen make me.â Sujin stood her ground, glaring at the girl.
Chaeri smiled. âOkay.â She reached over to the half finished can of soda that Han Seojun had left on the table and poured it over Sujin.
Sujin closed her eyes to calm herself. Donât engage Kang Sujin.
âHere you go, b****.â
Alright, screw it.
Sujinâs eyes popped open enraged. âWhat did you just call me? B****?â She grabbed Chaeriâs hair and pulled.
Chaeri screamed, âYah! What are you doing?â
âI was going easy on you since youâre a teenager. But now I see you need to be taught a lesson.â Sujin kept her grip firmly on the Chaeri hair as the girl struggled to break free. âListen carefully. Just because someone has allegedly done something wrong doesnât mean you get to take justice in your hands. If you see something wrong, you speak up about it. If itâs happening in front of you, you stop it. But you donât go around harassing someone without even understanding the full story, arachi? If Iâm a bully, then go tell the police and have them investigate. Calling me names and bothering me only makes you another bully, not an avenger.â
Sujin let go. Chaeri ran and cowered by her friends who looked at Sujin in fear.
âNow get out of my sight. And donât let me see you girls again.â
The girls ran away as Sujin watched. She didnât enjoy what had just happened. It left a bitter taste in her mouth.
Was I too harsh?
âRemind me never to piss you off again.â Han Seojun came to stand by her.
âMwo-ya, were you watching? How long were you here.â
âI came out when I saw you grabbing that girlâs hair.â
Sujin frowned in worry. âI wasnâtââ
âI know.â Seojun came forward, eyeing her head. âI heard the speech. Did they do this?â He pointed to her wet hair.
âUgh. Yeah.â Sujin groaned.
âLetâs go inside. You can clean up.â
Sujin used the convenience store bathroom to wash out the soda from her hair. She dried off with some paper towels but her head looked like a mess when she was done. She tried to smoothen it down but then it stuck to her face weirdly.
In the store, Han Seojun was signing an autograph for the store clerk. âYa, gimme that.â Sujin came up behind him and took his cap off from him, putting it on herself. Han Seojun didnât bat an eye lash.
âHere you go.â He told the clerk.
âThank you. My girlfriend will really appreciate it.â The clerk beamed.
The convenience store entrance rang as they exited.
âYou can keep that cap.â Seojun told Sujin.
âAh really?â
âYah! Are you the one who harassed my girlfriend?â
Seojun and Sujin turned. The high schooler, Chaeri, was standing there with four hulking boys, all looking like miscreants with their mean faces and unkempt clothing. They seemed older than high school kids, more like college students. The girlâs friends were notably missing. It was just her and the four thugs.
âHan Seojun,â Sujin whispered, âyou leave.â
âNo.â He said casually, yet firmly.
âYou could get into another scandal, you idiot!â Sujin hissed.
âNo.â
Sujin clenched her jaw. âListen to me, you dolt. Youâllââ
âOmo! Is that Han Seojun?â Chaeri was staring, eyes wide in wonder. âIt is! Oh my God, Oppa! Is that you? Why are you here?â Chaeriâs eyes passed between Seojun and Sujin. âOppa, are you actually dating this girl?â She asked, sounding betrayed.
âYou know this guy?â Chaeriâs boyfriend asked.
âHeâs Han Seojun. Heâs an idol.â
âHeâs not with me.â Sujin declared as she walked up to the group, putting distance between her and Seojun. âWe just coincidentally met inside.â She stood resolutely with her shoulders squared, not showing an ounce of fear.
Seojun walked up and stood Sujin. âI am with her. So what? You got a problem?â He asked Chaeri.
Sujinâs face contorted in exasperation. Han Seojun, you idiot!
The boyfriend looked amused at the situation. âAaah. I see now. You think that just because your boyfriend is a big shot idol that you can do whatever you want?â
âThatâs not what happened. Your girlfriend here harassed me first.â Sujin explained coolly.
âOppa, sheâs lying.â The girl said. âI was just walking by and she started pulling my hair.âÂ
Sujin scoffed. âWhat an obvious lie. You gonna believe that?â
âI donât see why I have to believe you.â The boyfriend replied.
âWhy would I attack her without any reason?â
âOppa, she did it because I was a fan of Han Seojun.â Chaeri looked at Seojun, âArenât you going to defend your fans?â
Seojun tilted his head. âMy fans donât go around harassing my friends.â
Chaeriâs mouth fell open. âWhat?â
âAlso, no real fan would damage their idolâs reputation but causing a scene like this. Donât you know it reflects badly on me when say I have toxic fans?â
Chaeriâs face contorted in anger. Sujin gulped, âHan Seojun, shut up.â
âOppa, youâre going to just let these people treat me this way?â Chaeri pulled at her boyfriendâs arm.
The boyfriend leaned down to Sujin, âListen here ahjumma, you hurt my girlfriend. That action is going to come with consequences.â
Seojun grabbed the boyâs collar, pushing him away from Sujin. âYou canât call yourself a man if you threaten women like this.â
The boyfriend laughed, before he went in for the punch. Seojun dodged it and kicked the guy in the chest, sending him backwards. Chaeri squealed and jumped to the side. The other three thugs went for Seojun and Sujin.
Sujin brought one of them down with a spin kick in the face. The other two boys were on Seojun. Sujin kicked one of them away and dragged him further by his hair.
It was difficult for Sujin and Seojun to keep up. The thugs, while young, were still huge and more in number. Sujin took her time to size up her opponents, hitting and dodging accordingly. Seojun fought in his typical instinctive manner, taking many hits but also delivering his own.Â
One of the boys had Seojun backed up in the corner and by this time the boyfriend had gotten back up. Seojun didnât see the boyfriend, but Sujin did. The boyfriend picked up a stick lying on the corner of the street by the garbage cans. Two thugs were on Seojun now, holding him back as the boyfriend raised the stick, aiming to swing it right in Seojunâs face.
In that moment, Sujin forgot all about fighting with strategy. All she could think of was saving Han Seojun. She ran into the boyfriend, taking him down with her entire body. She kicked him in the groin, causing so much pain that the boyâs face became red. Han Seojun, and the two thugs holding him back, were staring at her speechless.
âI wonât let you hit his face.â She told the boyfriend. Then, giving Seojun a sideways look she added, âItâs a hot commodity.â
Seojun took this opening to break free and kick the thugs away. Sujin swung the stick and hit one of them in the back. The last one standing decided to be smart and ran away.
Seojun and Sujin looked at each other, and the high schoolers lying on the ground, moaning in pain. They had won and it felt good. Seojun looked at something behind Sujin. She followed his line of sight and found Chaeri standing by the corner, recording everything on her phone.
Sujin walked up to her. âGive it while Iâm being nice.â
âIâm recording this too you know.â Chaeri said insolently.
Sujin smiled. Then spun around to kick Chaeri, except she missed her face by an inch.
âAh, how sad. I missed.â
Chaeri just stood, frozen in place. Seojun walked up, pulled the phone from her hand and smashed it to the ground.
âAm I going to hear about this online?â It was a rhetorical question. Said with such authority, in that deep angry baritone, that even Sujin felt intimidated.
Chaeri just shook her head.
âGood. Lets go, Kang Sujin.â Seojun led Sujin away by her arm.
âSo, like I said. Remind me never to piss you off again.â Seojun repeated. Sujin chuckled. âAlsoâŚâ Seojun rubbed the back of his head, âThanks⌠for saving me back there.â
âDonât mention it. After all, we have to protect his hot commodity.â Sujin teased. Instead of getting annoyed like she expected him to, Han Seojun smirked.
âYou know I never said my face was a hot commodity. I only said it was a precious commodity.â Sujin stopped in her tracks as she realized he was right. But Seojun kept on walking smugly. âI guess you think Iâm hot.â He called back to her.
âNo way!â Sujin yelled as she ran after him. âNo way!â ii.
Things had changed between Kang Sujin and Han Seojun. They were way past enmity now. In fact, Seojun couldnât even remember the hate he used to have for her. They were also past the courteous co-existence they had sustained for a brief period where they acted polite and nice to one another which was more a sign of them being strangers than anything else.
Now Han Seojun and Kang Sujin really could say that they were friends. Hanging out together had become a weekly ritual. Almost always, it was prompted by something Jukyung or Suho did.
The night of Suhoâs and Jukyungâs the engagement party, hosted by Suhoâs father, they went to karaoke to sing their hearts out. As expected, Seojun was the better singer. But Sujin wasnât exactly bad herself. Her song choices were about self-empowerment and having fun. Seojun chose soft, ballads that were clearly about Jukyung.
âOne day, my songs will be on a karaoke machine too.â Seojun had wished as they had walked back home.
âAnd then I will sing it.â Sujin encouraged.
âAnd ruin it.â
Sujin punched him in the shoulder.
The time Suho and Jukyung announced their wedding on Jukyungâs channel, they went to an arcade. Of course, Sujin beat Seojun at every game.
âAh-nee, how do you know how to play? All I ever saw you doing in school was study.â
âJust accept it, Han Seojun. Iâm better than you.â
âAt bragging maybe.â
The time Jukyung got drunk and went around hugging Han Seojun thinking he was Suho, they went for a drive on his bike.
Sujin had insisted that he teach her how to ride it.
âArenât you afraid?â Seojun remebered how terrified Jukyung had been when she first rode with him.
âWhy would I be?â Sujin asked, confused.
She took to the bike quickly and soon was riding them both around the city without Seojunâs guidance.
âNot too bad, Kang Sujin.â Seojun was impressed. Sujin grinned triumphantly.
As per their agreement, the two looked out for each other when they were with the group, making sure their feelings werenât too apparent. At the night of the engagement party, Sujin kept covering for Seojun when he didnât participate in conversations as much as he usually did. She would answer for him or change the subject. On the same night, Seojun had been the one to sneak Sujin away when she was on the verge of breaking into tears when the couple was cutting the cake. No one had noticed the two heart broken friends that night. All eyes had been on Jukyung and Suho.
On the same night that Jukyung had gotten drunk, Han Seojun had been the one to distract Suah when she kept pushing Jukyung into dating a guy she knew from work. And on a separate occasion, when the group was out for dinner and had run into Suhoâs father, Seojun had kept a firm hand on Sujinâs back when Lee Joheon spoke at length on how sad he was about her parentsâ divorce.
As uncanny as it seemed, it was undeniable. Han Seojun and Kang Sujin were friends now. Oddly enough, no one seemed to have picked up on their closeness, despite the fact that they never hid it from anyone. Sujin mentioned that Seojun had taught her how to ride his bike but the statement went unnoticed for its inclusion of Han Seojun. All Suah and Jukyung cared about was how dangerous it was to drive bikes.
âHan Seojun! Stop being a bad influence on Sujin!â Jukyung had scolded.
âWhat did I do? Sheâs the one who wanted to learn. And sheâs not so innocent either. Just ask her about how she beat me in jiujitsu.â Seojun had pointed a finger at her.
âYou know Jiujitsu?â Suho had asked, ignoring the part about her beating Seojun.
âYeah. We should spar sometime.â
And so things went on and Jukyungâs and Suhoâs wedding date inched closer and closer. But Sujin felt nothing had really improved with her feelings about Suho.
âWe should really get to the therapy part one of these days.â Sujin casually said over a cup of coffee. This time, they had opted for a quiet meeting in a cafĂŠ.
Seojun considered her request. âWhat should we talk about?â
They both drew a blank, neither able to come up with a good starting point. Their feelings were so complicated and tangled that neither knew were to start unraveling.
Sujin raised a hand, fingers spread out wide. âFive questions.â She said, and with each word she lowered a finger, âWho, What, When, Where and Why.â She said in English.
âWhatâs that?â
âIts how you gather basic information. You ask yourself these questions.â Sujin explained, translating in Korean, âWho is it? What is it? When was it? and Why was it?â
Seojun nodded. âOkay. You first.â
âHmm⌠We can skip the Who since we already know who it is. So, what is it that I like about Lee Suho? HmmâŚâ Sujin had to think for a minute.Â
The first thing that popped into her mind was her father. She and Suho both had troubled relationships with their fathers and at the time, Sujin had felt that Suho could understand her better because because of this. But she couldnât tell Han Seojun that. Having a dysfunctional family made her feel like a freak. She didnât need Han Seojun knowing about her private problems, even if they were friends.Â
So instead of the truth, she said, âHe was cool,â Â
Seojun scoffed. âKang Sujin were you that shallow?â
Sujin looked at him flatly. âIt wasnât just that! It was⌠well, he was always cold to everyone else. But he still treated me better.â Sujin looked at her hands, nervously playing with her thumbs. âI guess I liked how he was with me. And I liked that he wasnât shallow like most boys are. â
That answer seemed more acceptable to Seojun. âI donât think I can distill my feelings to just a couple of traits. I like everything about Lim Jukyung. The way she smiles, the way she ties up her hair, how kind and caring she is with everyone⌠she just has this warmth about her that just⌠draws you in.â
âI know what you mean.â Sujin agreed. But there was a little part of her that resented Seojunâs compliments of Jukyung. Wasnât she kind and caring too? Didnât she have any warmth?
Probably not. Her fatherâs voice said. Sujin pushed it away.
âWhen did you first start liking Lee Suho?â Seojun asked.
Sujin thought for a minute. âI donât know. I just know that when I noticed I liked him, it felt like I had always liked him.â She sat up straight. âWhat about you? When did you start liking Jukyung?â
After a pause he replied, âWhen I started to get to know her. I canât say exactly when⌠But I noticed my heart would act weird after she started teasing me about my underwear--â
âSay what now? What underwear?â Sujin perked up. It was at this moment that Han Seojun knew, that he had messed up. He could feel himself get red in the face.
âIt was nothing. What I meant wasââ
âNononono, no. Han Seojun, youâre not getting out of this one. Tell me. What underwear?â
Seojun crossed his arms, âIâm not saying a word.â
Their therapy session had ended there. Sujin tried again and again to get Seojun to reveal what the underwear incident was but he kept his silence. He would die before he ever told anyone about how Jukyung had seen him dancing around in his cheetah print underwear.
Han Seojun still experienced PTSD when he heard âOkey Dokey yo!â from anywhere.
iii.
Seojun didnât know how the fight began. They had met up for dinner after Sujin got off from work. She had taken up various part time jobs to pay the bills. With her being busy throughout the day, dinner was the only time they could meet.
They had been talking about Suho and Jukyung. Seojun normally danced around the topic of what Sujin had done back in high school now that they were friends. But this time she had brought it up herself.
âDo you remember that picture I took of you?â
âYeah.â Seojun still remembered how flatly she had said You look cool. He had almost admired her audacity back then, and he did so more now.
âI traded it to get the info on Jukyung.â She admitted quietly.
âAh, even back then my face was such a hot commodity.â Seojun said smugly.
Sujin made a face at him.
They joked about the past, about how Han Seojun hadnât changed since then, about how Sujin had changed so much. Then, as they walked towards Sujinâs apartment, they got into the serious stuff. About how Sujin just disappeared after the truth about her was revealed, about how Seojun was right that she had only destroyed herself, and no one else.
âI wish I hadnât done all that. Looking back, I want to kick myself.â Sujin had said.
âYou should have shared, about what you were going through. Suah and Jukyung would have understood. I mean, having your father treat you the way he did⌠it must have made everything harder to deal with. Looking back, I might have acted better too, even helped y--â
Seojun suddenly noticed that Sujin wasnât with him. She had stopped in her tracks and was glaring at him but Seojun couldnât understand why.
âW-what do you mean my fatherâs treatment?â Sujin asked icily, her face was unreadable.
âWell⌠didnât he used to beat you and pressure you forââ
âShut up! Just shut up, Han Seojun!â Sujin suddenly freaked out. And it scared Seojun.
âWhatâs wrong?â He asked with concern. He moved towards her, but she moved back.
She looked at him coldly. âWho the hell told you about this? Was it Suho? It was Suho, wasnât it? No one else knows besides him.â
Seojun hesitated. âActually... that time when I met your momââ
Sujin blinked rapidly. âSo youâre saying that youâve known about this all this time?â
âKang Sujin, calm down its not aââ
Sujin spoke through clenched teeth, âWhatâs not a big deal? The fact that my family is broken or the fact that my father was an abusive asshole? What exactly about it is not a big deal, Han Seojun?â
Seojun was thoroughly confused now. âSujin-ah.â he called out to her but she kept moving back with every step he took towards her. She was shaking quite visibly.
âDid you have fun, thinking I was so tragic and damaged? Did you have fun pitying me all this time? Did youââ Sujinâs eyes went wide as if she hit a realization. âYa Han Seojun⌠did you become friends with me because you pitied me?â She said the word with such acidity that Seojun flinched.
It would be a lie to say it hadnât influenced his opinion of her. But it wasnât the only reason they were friends. Surely Sujin had to understand that.
âSujin-ahââ
âItâs true, isnât it?â Sujinâs lip quivered. âAll this time, youâve only treated me decently because you thought I was some tragic caseââ
âYou know thatâs not true.â Seojun protested but Sujin wasnât listening.
ââand here I was thinking we were actually friends. Han Seojun, would you have even been nice to me if you hadnât known?â
âDoes that matter?â Seojun asked, frustrated, âWeâre friends now, arenât we?âÂ
That had been the wrong thing to say. Sujinâs eyes flamed as she suddenly switched. Gone was the shaking and the freaked out look. Sujin was now very calm and cold; calculating in her movements. She gave a sarcastic smile. âYa Han Seojun. Do you know? I pity you too.â
âWhat?â
âPathetically liking someone for so long, whining like a boy over everything, acting all childish, you think that makes you attractive?â
âYa, Kang Sujinââ Seojun warned.
âI bet Jukyung pities you too.â Sujin stalked up to Seojun. âAh, that loser, Han Seojun, until when is he going to be hung up on me? I bet thatâs what she thinks every time she sees you.â
They glared at each other for the longest time. Maybe too long.
âKang Sujin⌠you are seriously messed up.â Was all Seojun said before he walked away; from Sujin and the entire situation. Sujinâs eyes filled with tears which she furiously blinked away.
If Sujin had been more like Jukyung, she would have dealt with this situation maturely. Lim Kukyung would have faced her emotions and not taken Seojunâs sympathy as pity. Lim Jukyung would have been up front about how she felt and not pushed Seojun away. Lim Jukyung would have been better.
But Kang Sujin was not Lim Jukyung. Kang Sujin was a messed up girl.
iv.
âHas anyone heard from Sujin recently?â Jukyung asked the group. They were all gathered for lunch, all except Seojun and Sujin, both of whom had been absent these past couple of get-togethers.
âWae? Has something happened?â Suah asked.
âNot really. But she hasnât been replying as much to my texts.â Jukyung pouted.
âYou know what Kang Su is like. Sheâs rarely online. Plus, sheâs working all these jobs now.â
âShe always replies to me though,â Jukyung muttered to herself as she looked at her chat with Sujin. The one Sujin hadnât responded to since four days.
âIs Seojun not coming today either?â Taehoon asked Suho.
âDonât know. Heâs so busy with brand practice these days that he barely replies to me.â
âGuys! Sorry Iâm late!â Sujin rushed towards the group.
âKang Su!â Jukyung and Suah welcomed her.
âWe were afraid you wouldnât show up again.â Jukyung said, putting her arm through Sujinâs.
âKang Su-ya,â Suah said, playfully nudging Sujinâs shoulder, âyouâre all dressed up. Did you just come back from a date?â Indeed Sujin was wearing a sleek black pant suit with full makeup on.
âWho went on a date?â Seojun arrived but stopped when he saw Sujin. Sujin held her breath as she waited for him to say something.
âOur Kang Su.â Suah responded. Seojun just flicked a brow but betrayed no emotion. He took a seat besides Suho.
âYa! It wasnât a date. I just came back from an interview.â She grinned.
âOoh! How did it go?â
Sujin kept her silence for a second before she finally burst with excitement, âI got it!â The girls squealed at the good news. âIts at this non-profit that works with providing clean water to under-developed countries.â She showed everyone the website for the company and the work that they did on her phone.
Everyone congratulated Sujin on her accomplishment. Even Seojun gave her a âCongratulations.â To which she thanked him.
âIâm glad youâre here. I didnât think youâd come.â Suho told Seojun.
He wasnât going to. But he had heard that Sujin hadnât been present either and he had figured it would be okay for him to join everyone if she wasnât there.Â
She should have been an actress, Seojun thought as he watched Sujin behave like nothing was wrong.
The conversation over lunch flowed easily as it usually did. Everyone laughed, joked and shared about what had happened since they last met. No one seemed to notice that Seojun and Sujin were not speaking directly to each other, even once. They only spoke to everyone else.
It was only when Seojun was leaving the menâs room that he found Sujin waiting for him and jumped in surprise.
âAh, ggam-jjak-ee-ya!â Seojun held his chest in shock.
âAww, the great Han Seojun getâs scared?â
âOnly when confronted by pervert girls who stalk boys outside the washrooms.â
Sujin narrowed her eyes. âShut up! I wasnât stalking. I was only waiting to talk to you.â
âThatâs equally worrying. What do you want?â He said dismissively.
Sujin handed him a keychain. It was his own face made in cartoon form. âHere. I know how much you love seeing yourself.â
âWhatâs this for?â
Sujin cleared her throat. âAn apology. Mianhae, Han Seojun. Last timeââ
âI donât want to hear it.â He handed the keychain back to Sujin. She grabbed his arm as he tried to leave.
âAt least hear me out.â
âNo.â Seojun pushed her arm away.
Sujinâs lips tightened. She grabbed Seojunâs arm again, pulling him with brute strength. âWill you just listen to me you big baby! Iâm trying to apologize.â She glared at him.
âWhy? I thought you hated me.â
Sujinâs face softened. âI donât hate you, Han Seojun.â She let go of his arm. âThat time⌠when you started talking about my father, I just lost it. I havenât actually told anybody about what he did to me. Not even Suah and Jukyung know. All they know is that he was tough on me.â
âLee Suho knows.â Seojun accused.
âHe figured it out on his own. I never actually told him. How could I?â Sujin felt ridiculous admitting it out loud, âHow could I tell him that I donât know what a happy family looks like? I see Jukyung with her dad and Suah with hers and how they have such good relationships, and I canât imagine being the same way with my father. And that makes me feel like a freak. People already give me weird looks because of my parentsâ divorce. If they knew about my father, theyâd think that I was crazy⌠and maybe I am, who knows.â
Seojun softened. âYouâre not crazy, Sujin-ah.âÂ
There it was, that pity on Han Seojunâs face. Sujin hated it but she had come today to this lunch only to apologize to him and that is what she was going to do.
âI am, Han Seojun. Why else would I have said all of those mean things?â Sujinâs voice shook. Seojun moved to hug her but she stepped away. Him comforting her would be too much, she would fall to pieces if he did. She had to hold herself together, on her own. âIâm sorry Han Seojun. I didnât mean any of it. Not a single word.â
Seojun nodded. âI know.â He felt like a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders and only then did he notice how bothered he really had been about their fight.
âYou guys not coming?â Suho asked as he passed by. Seojun and Sujin straightened themselves up and joined the others.
They found the girls giggling at something on Jukyungâs phone.
âWhatâs funny?â
âYa Kang Sujin, your nose looks so big in this!â Suah commented. Jukyung turned the phone to Sujin. It was the video of the live event they had done.
âAish!â Sujin said disapprovingly. âI look so weird in this video.â
Suho and Taehoon leaned over and laughed too as Sujin robotically read off the comments in the video.
âMaybe we can go Seojunâs makeup next.â Jukyung suggested.
âIâm a celebrity, Lim Jukyung.â He said haughtily, pulling the lapels of his jacket, âYou canât just have me on any show.â
Sujin wrinkled her nose at Seojun, âThis coming from a guy who didnât even know the difference between ppt and fitting.â
âThat never happened!â Seojun contested. Everyone else laughed.
âSujin-ah. Maybe I can have you on as a guest next time.â Jukyung suggested.
âSure.â Sujin put her arm around Jukyung and whispered audibly, âAnd letâs do it when Suho isnât around.â The girls winked to each other.
Suho smacked Sujinâs hand away from Jukyungâs shoulder. âKeep your hands off my girlfriend.â
âSure. But I canât guarantee sheâll keep her hands off me.â Sujin grinned evilly. Suhoâs wide eyed, worried, expression made Jukyung laugh.
v.
Han Seojun fell on his face for the umpteenth time as he tried to hit the ball that Sujin had served. He was lucky they were all on the beach and his face was hitting soft sand instead of concrete.
âYa, whoâs idea was it to play volleyball?â Seojun asked as he brushed himself off.
âQuit being a sore loser, Han Seo!â Sujin called from the girlâs side of the net.
âJust you watch. I will make you eat your words!â
Of course, the boys lost. Suho was too distracted by Jukyung. Taehoon played bad on purpose because Suah said she wanted to win. Chorong was a bad at playing in general. The only two people taking this seriously were Han Seojun and Kang Sujin who ran around covering up for their team mates, as if their lives depended on winning. Sujin in particular refused to let Seojun get a single goal.
âYou must really hate Han Seojun, huh?â Suah asked once the game was over.
âNo. I just donât like to lose.â
âLook at her, itâs like sheâs going to war.â Jukyung laughed at the fire in Sujinâs eyes.
âDid you piss Kang Sujin off?â Taehoon was asking Seojun on the other side as the boys drank water.
âNah, sheâs just like that in general.â Seojun panted, still exhausted from the game.
A crowd of girls had gathered around their little game, drawn towards Suho and Seojun playing. They had cheered the boys on during the game and now they gravitated towards the two, hoping to get a chance to talk to them.
Suho had brushed them off in his usual rude manner. Seojun had been obliging, especially when they recognized who he was. He patiently signed autographs but couldnât take pictures since his company didnât allow them.
âHan Seojun, we have to get back.â Suah had come over to inform him.
âYeah, just one minute.â The fans kept coming and coming. Seojun realized that maybe he should tell them he has to go. But as much as he wanted, he couldnât say no to the hopeful girls who had liked the music that he made and had decided his signature was worth something.
âHan Seojun hurry up! We have to move!â Jukyung called.
âJust a second!â
Suho came over and rudely pushed through the crowd of girls. âYah! Donât be like that to my fans.â He tried dragging Seojun away but Seojun dodged him and the girls quickly pushed him back.
âYah! Havenât you girls had enough?!â Sujinâs voice boomed over the crowd, terrifying everyone. âAnd you girls over there!â Sujin pointed, âI saw you two return twice! Youâre planning on selling those autographs, arenât you?â
âYa Kang Sujinââ Seojun began to protest.
âDonât piss me off.â Sujin warned, âOur trip isnât a place for you to have fan meetings.â She grabbed Seojunâs wrist and dragged him away before he could object.
The fangirls whispered to each other angrily, but none dared stand in Sujinâs way as she took Seojun away from them.
âMwo-ya.â
âWho is that girl?â
âWhat the hell?â
âCome on, Iâm hungry. We should get back to the resort.â Suho said when Seojun had joined them. He and Taehoon picked up their things and loaded them in their car.
At a distance, near a food cart, stood Kim Chorong. He watched as everyone got ready to leave. He could see Suah and Jukyung clinging to their boyfriends, his own posse goofing around and Han Seojun laughing and joking with his arm around Suho.
âDid you see how all those girls swarmed around me?â Seojun asked Jukyung. âYa, arenât you lucky to have a guy like me as your friend?â
âWhat lucky? You wasted all our time!â Jukyung scolded.
âAh, I just canât turn off my charms.â
Sujin scoffed, pulling a disgusted face, âWhere? Where are these charms?â She put her hand over her eyes and mimicked searching.
âRight here!â Seojun replied, puffing his chest. âSee how charming I am!â
âAs charming as a sea louse maybe.â
âYah!â The group laughed as Seojun pointed accusingly at Sujin.
Chorong had watched as Seojun pointed at Sujin in a huff while everyone laughed. It was the liveliest that Chorong had ever seen Han Seojun be.
âChagi, what are you doing here all alone?â Chorongâs girlfriend came up to him.
âGeunyang.â Chorong put his arm around his girlfriend and walked towards the group.
They all went back to their resort, a beautiful location that Suho had paid for as this was the first time that everyone was going together since high school. They were all given shared rooms. Naturally, Chorong shared his with Seojun.
âHan Seojun,â Chorong began as Seojun changed out of his shirt, âIâm really happy for you.â
âHuh? What for?â
âYou always used to complain about hanging out with everyone, but I donât hear you do that anymore.â Chorong said sentimentally.
Seojun blinked. âKim Chorong did you drink too much sea water? What kind of a weird thing is that to say?â
Chorong came up and hugged the half-naked Seojun, who balked at the gesture. âWhat the hell?!â
âDo you know how worried I was about you?â Chorong, with his enormous size, did not notice how Han Seojun desperately struggled to break free from his grip.
âYa! You pervert, lemme go!â
âAh-nee, look at you now. You said you would never go on an overnight trip with Suho and Jukyung, and yet here you are.â
Seojun stopped struggling. âWhat?â
It was odd that out of all people, Chorong had been the one to notice. âIâm so happy for you Han Seojun. Thââ
âHan Seojun, Jukyungâs asking if you wouldâwhatthehell?â Sujin burst in and went still when she saw a half dressed Seojun being held by a sentimental looking Chorong.
Sujin betrayed no emotion. Just wordlessly took out her phone and promptly snapped a photo.
Han Seojun tried to push Chorong away, âNo! Ya! Donât you dare!â
âJukyung is asking if you will sing songs for us. Quickly get dressed and come over, okay?â Sujin went out and Seojun caught a glimpse of her evil smile as she did.
âYah! Kim Chorong!â Seojun shouted as Chorong finally let him go.
Of course, Seojun would perform. He always did when Jukyung asked. The group clapped at the end of the first song but the only reaction Seojun cared for was Jukyung. As usual, he found her engrossed with Lee Suho instead of him. Seojun couldnât help but stare at the two.
âYou sounded good.â Sujin came out of nowhere, blocking his view of Jukyung. Seojun knew, she was doing it on purpose.
âToo obvious?â He asked quietly.
âToo obvious. Suah almost noticed.â Sujin moved to block Suahâs line of vision to Seojunâs face.
âThanks, I owe you one.â Seojun said.
âPay me back with a song then.â Sujin rolled on her heels.
âNope. Only Jukyung gets to request songs.â
She pfft-ed through her lips, âMwo-ya. How stingy.â She turned on her heels.
âWhat song?â Seojun asked. Sujin smiled and turned back.
âYou Were Beautiful by Day6.â
âWhy not something by my band?â Seojun sounded almost insulted.
âI like Day6 better.â Sujin teased.
âI expected better taste from you, Kang Sujin.â Seojun adjusted the tuning of his guitar, testing the chords.
âIts my goodbye.â Sujin explained. âIâm moving on from Lee Suho.â
âHavenât I heard that before?â Seojun said skeptically.
âIts for real this time.â Sujin said. Seojun looked up at her determined face.
âYouâre serious.â It wasnât a question.
âYeah. Itâs been long enough now. This is my way of making it official. So do a good job, okay?â Sujin walked away.
âI bet Iâll sing it better!â Seojun called after her.
âWeâll see!â
She hadnât looked at Suho even once during his performance. But then, she hadnât looked at anyone, just stared out the window. By the end she was tearing up. Seojun saw Suho happen to look over at Sujin.
Heâs going to see her cry.
Seojun began to play his guitar loudly and messily, âYeppeosseo! Yeppeosseo! Neon neomu yeppeosseo!â Everyone winced as he sang, or rather shouted, at the wrong note. But the abrupt bad singing had its intended effect. Suhoâs attention was on Han Seojun. It took a second for Sujin to get the message. She sat up straight and wiped her face.
âHan Seojun! Stop it!â Suah yelled and Seojun stopped. âAre you in a rock band?â
Sujin sent him a grateful smile.
âItâs a totally new style of singing. You guys donât like?â Seojun asked.
âNo!â Came the resounding response.
Sujinâs was the only voice that said. âYes!â
Seojun pointed his guitar at Sujin, head tilted back. âBetter than Day6?â
âMuch better!â Sujin grinned.
vi.
âYES! I WIN! I WIN!â Seojun ran around the court, pumping his fist in the air as Kang Sujin stared with a flat face and her hands on her hips. After having lost at nearly everything to Kang Sujin, Han Seojun had finally discovered something she was bad at.
âAre you really that happy?â She said, her upper lip pulled up in disdain.
âYa! How can someone be so bad at basketball? You didnât score a single goal!â Seojunâs eyes were wide with pure joy, his cheeks uplifted in a wide smile.
âStop making fun of me.â Sujin fumed. She hated losing.
âI mean, Iâve never seen anyone lose so bad!â He laughed while pointing at Sujin, relishing in her first defeat. He knew he was great at basketball, but he hadnât expected Sujin to be that bad. Sujin looked away, puffing up her cheeks.
âZero!â He made a circle from his finger and thumb, âYou got zero! Iâve seen worse players score more on accident!â
âAh shut up!â She stomped her foot, "I was just off my game!â
âOff your game? Wae? Was my handsome face too distracting for you?â Seojun expected Sujin to come after him with a flying kick, or a punch in the shoulder or even a pithy retort. What he didnât expect was the deep blush that spread across her cheeks. She looked around, choosing to look anywhere but him.
âOh my God, jinjja? You got distracted by my face?â Seojun moving to look at her face better.
âAh-nee-godun!â Sujin yelled, dodging his gaze. âWho would get distracted by those mean eyes?â
âOh, so it was my eyes?â Seojun purred.
âAs if!â
âOoooooh! Youâre even blushing!â He teased.
âIâm red from playing!â Sujin spun around and walked away, leaving Seojun laughing.
âIâm joking! Iâm joking! I know itâs not that. Come back Sujin-ah!â
They changed out of their sweaty gym clothes. Seojun was wearing his typical brown coat over black pants and a black turtle-neck sweater. He was ready before Sujin so he waited for her outside.
She came out all dolled up, her hair brushed straight, fresh makeup on her face. She had a white coat over a pretty, pale pink dress. Seojun didnât understand why she had dressed up so brightly today. She even had heels on. Sujin had denied any special reason when he had asked before so he figured this was just a girl thing that he would never understand.
They had only walked a couple of steps when Sujin stopped in her tracks. âAh, shit. I think I forgot my phone inside.â
âWhy are you so distracted today? Where is your head, Kang Sujin?â Seojun complained. Sujin ran back inside to get her phone.
âGot it!â She came back running.
They walked over to the cafĂŠ that they frequented to the point where the barista recognized them now.
âIâm sorry we couldnât go to the amusement park like you wanted.â Seojun apologized.
Sujin waved a hand dismissively, âDoesnât matter. It was just a throw away suggestion.â
âBut I understand why you wanted to go there instead.â
âYou do?â Sujin asked with a tinge of worry.
âIts because you didnât want me to find out you were bad at basketball, didnât you?â Seojun snapped his fingers.
Sujinâs face fell. She clicked her tongue in disappointment.
âIâm right, arenât I?â
Sujin replied sarcastically, âAh, youâre totally right Han Seojun. I am so immature that all I care about is winning against a guy who thought Einstein was an appliance.â
âThat happened only once.â Seojun defended.
A silence fell between them as their order came. Wordlessly, Sujin drank her iced latte and Seojun sipped his iced Americano. They often had these moments where neither would speak. But it was a comfortable silence. Sometimes Seojun and Sujin just enjoyed each otherâs company without feeling the need to talk.
âYou know we never finished our five questions.â Sujin reminded.
âOh wow. That feels like it was so long ago.â Seojun leaned his head back as he tried to remember. âWe covered the When. Where⌠I donât remember where I fell in love with Jukyung. I think it was the moment in school where she was making fun of myâŚâ Seojun cleared his throat.
âOne of these days Iâll find out what that incident was, Han Seojun.â Sujin claimed.
âBut not today.â He smiled. âSo yeah, I think it was in school. What about you?â
âI think it was at the tutoring centers. I used to go there to study. My father had hit me, and I was in a strange place at that time. Suho comforted me and I guess that was when I realized I liked him. Now you, why did you like Lim Jukyung?â
Seojun leaned back and thought for the longest time. âShe was⌠unexpected. I only started to pester her because I thought she was dating Suho.â
âYeah, I remember that pestering part.â
Ya, Han Seojun are you a gangster?! Whiplash. Every time Seojun remembered that moment he felt whiplash.
âSince I hated Suho at that time, I had expected her to be hateful too. I thought she was just some vain, mindless girl but⌠she was the complete opposite. She was kind and thoughtful. She had a good heart and that made her beautiful to me. With or without makeup.â Seojun paused, then suddenly chuckled.
âWhat?â
âItâs funny. Before, I was never able to pin down what I liked about her. My feelings always seemed so complicated. But now that I see it⌠it feels so obvious.â
Seojun didnât notice Sujin looking down at her hands, nervously rubbing them together, âSeojun, do you ever think you coulââ She spoke just when Seojun did.
âWhat did you like about Suhoâoh sorry. I didnât mean toââ
âNo, no.â Sujin shook her head. âI wasnât saying anything. You were asking why I liked Lee Suho? UmmâŚâ Sujin thought about it.
âLee Suho, has never once liked a girl. Not before Jukyung, at least. There was a time when I was his only friend in school. And I thought⌠I misunderstood, his kindness as interest. Iâve always been pushed to get the number one position, you know? I always had to be number one. And when I thought that the guy that liked no one, liked me⌠it made me feel like I was number one, even if I ranked low on the grade sheet.â Sujin looked out the glass wall of the cafĂŠ, out on the street where people were walking, and it was slightly drizzling.
âWhen he found out that my father hit me, I thought he would see me as a crazy person, or pity me, or judge me for hating my father. But he never did. He only comforted me. He just⌠understood. And it was the first time that I felt that there was someone else who could understand me and understand what I was going through. Thatâs why I liked Lee Suho.â
Sujin looked back at Seojun. His mouth had shrunken into a small curve.
âBut now heâs just annoying.â Sujin said in a lighter tone, âI mean, at a certain point you start hating people when they appear too perfect, isnât that so?â
Seojun attempted a smile but it was weak.
âIâm happy now, Seojun-ah. Iâm happy that Iâm not with Suho. I think its for the best. If I think about it. Suho and I are too similar. We didnât need more of the same. We needed someone who would help us change. Jukyung helped Suho do that. I could never have.â
âThatâs a healthy way to look at it. Though I still think Iâm perfect for Jukyung.â Seojun said smugly.
Sujin scoffed. âYou think youâre perfect for every girl.â
âWhereâs the lie?â
âHere! Yeogi! Hereâs the lie.â Sujin tapped her finger on Seojunâs side of the table.
âAh, Kang Sujin. You have no taste.â Seojun squinted his eyes at her in mock pity.
âAnd you have the IQ of a sloth.â
âI donât need a high IQ. My greatest strength is my charm.â
âYou keep mentioning this charm but I never see it.â Sujin put her hand over her eyes and began to search around.
They bickered in the cafĂŠ till the barista had to remind them, that they were being too loud. The banter continued as Seojun walked her all the way to her apartment. Throughout the way, Seojun could notice Sujin acting nervously; playing with the hem of her dress, combing her hair again and again, wiping her sweaty palms against her coat when she thought he wasnât looking. He felt she had something to say to him but he didnât want to ask what it was. If Kang Sujin had something to say, she said it.
Then, out of the blue, she swiveled on her heel to stand right in front of him.
âYa, Han SeojunâŚâ
âWhat?â
Sujin gulped. âAh-nee-da. Itâs nothing.â She turned her back to him.
âWhaaaat?â Seojun whined. âYouâve been fidgeting this while time so you definitely have something to say. What is it?â
âI forgot.â Sujin said, walking ahead, biting her lip.
âMwo-yaâŚâ Seojun let it go. She probably had more to say about Lee Suho and he wasnât in any mood to hear it.
âGood night, Sujin-ah.â Seojun said when they reached her building.
âD-Do you wanna come up?â Sujin asked, stuttering a bit.
âNah. I should go. I have an early day tomorrow.â
âAh, okay.â
âChalga.â Seojun waved goodbye. He had not walked more than ten steps when Sujin called out to him.
âHan Seojun!â
âWhat?â
Sujin hesitated. âB-Bye!â
Seojun chuckled. âMwo-ya. Sheâs so weird.â
Sujin saw him wave and then leave. âIf he turns, then Iâll tell him.â She told herself, trying to work up the courage to say what she had been meaning to the entire night.
But he never turned. Seojun just kept on walking and walking till he disappeared into the crowd.
âI like you, Han Seojun.â Sujin confessed to the wind. âI like you a lot.â
vii.
Han Seojun had to be absent for the whole month due to his idol duties. Sujin was glad for his absence. It had given her time to set her head straight about her feelings. She could still vividly remember, that last time she had ever confessed to a guy and that was back in high school. She clearly recalled how Suho had looked at her with disgust when she had said, or rather declared that he would have liked her if she had confessed first.
No. I wouldnât have.
âAish! What was I thinking saying all of those things?â She pulled at her hair as she rolled over in her bed. The humiliation of demanding that Suho break up with Jukyung, and ridiculously saying that she would toss Jukyung aside for him was too much. On top of that, she had tried to kiss Suho and he had pushed her away, repulsed. That in and of itself made her stomach ache with embarrassment.
She had a good heart and that made her beautiful to me. With or without makeup.
âAh out of all people why him?! Why another guy who loves Lim Jukyung?! What the hell is wrong with me?!â Sujin groaned, rolling around in her bed over and over. Was she obsessed with men who were into Jukyung? Sujin felt frustrated with herself and wanted to throw her heart out.
She just has this warmth about her that just⌠draws you in.
Kind, caring, genuine, warm; none of those things describe me. Good heart? A single search on the internet would reveal just how good my heart is. Betraying my best friend and ruining all of my friendships in the process⌠who would say I have a good heart?
Sujin couldnât compete with the shadow cast by Lim Jukyung. Even if Seojun did start to like her, Lim Jukyung would always be his first love. And just like always, Sujin would be second.
Sujin felt a familiar jealousy creep in; a resentment, a hate, an anger. It was history repeating itself. It was Lim Jukyung again. Why? Why did it have to be her? She and Suho had ten years worth of history between them and even that couldnât compare to how he felt for Jukyung. Sujin and Seojun had only a year worth of friendship, a quarter of which included Seojun hating her.
It was a dark feeling. A heavy feeling. Like a weight in her chest. Sujin carried it with her whereever she went. She was supposed to meet everyone today. Seojun was suppsed to be back. She felt like she would be a coward if she didnât go. But she felt like she would hate Jukyung more if she saw her. In the end she did go, and that weight in her chest went with her.
Jukyung was outside alone when Sujin saw her. She was finishing up a call.
Why? Why did it have to be her? Whywhywhy?
Sujin stopped in her tracks. No. She thought resolutely. She would not make the same mistake again. She would not let her feelings take over her judgement. She would not lose her friend again. As much as she loved Han Seojun, she loved her friendship with Lim Jukyung even more.
âSujin-ah! Youâre here-Oh?â
Sujin enveloped Jukyung in a massive hug, almost on the verge of tears. Jukyung hugged her back, confused.
âYou know I love you, right?â Sujin said.
âDangyunhaji! I love you too.â Jukyung hugged her tighter.
âIâll always be a good friend to you, Jukyung-ah. I promise.â Sujin sniffed.
âOh, are you crying?â
âNo, thereâs just something in my eye.â Sujin quickly wiped her face while still holding Jukyung so that she wouldnât see her cry.
But before she could part, something pulled her collar from behind.
An irritated Suho stood, still tugging at her collar, âYouâre not stealing my fiancĂŠe.â
âI bet sheâd prefer me to you.â
âOkay! Okay! No fighting!â Jukyung declared a ceasefire.
âAre we fighting?â Seojun came up, putting his arm casually around Suho. âIf itâs a fight, my betâs on Sujin.â
âWae. You think sheâs better than me?â Suho asked.
âSheâs scarier than you.â
âYou traitor.â Suho released himself from Seojunâs side hug and went inside, grumbling. Jukyung followed after him.
âWhat was that about?â Seojun asked Sujin.
Sujin looked at him. His delicate, boyish features, his mean looking eyes that carried a surprising warmth. Her heartbeat wildly like a hummingbird. Sujin felt like she could spend an entire day just staring at his face. And then she felt it again, the quiet darkness that reminded her that she could never be with him. Quite suddenly, Sujin spun around and kicked Han Seojun in the back.
âYah! What was that for?!â Seojun yelled.
âFor being you.â She said and walked in, leaving Seojun bruised and confused.
viii.
You were pretty
The feeling of not wanting anything more
Moments that only you gave
Everything, everything
Everything has passed
But you were so pretty
Seojun hummed the song as he finalized the playlist for Jukyungâs wedding. Of course, he was going to perform at Jukyungâs wedding. It only made sense given his connection to Jukyung and Suho. The fact that Suhoâs father was an important man at Move Entertainment also helped make things official.
A part of Han Seojun had wished that Jukyung hadnât asked him. He was terrified of her wedding day; terrified of what his heart might do to him, terrified that he might feel compelled to run away with her in front of everyone.
Right now Seojun was calm. But it felt like it was the calm before the storm.
âMemories of me, have probably become, a thing of the past for you too, whatever I saw to you, it will all be something, in the past.
âWhatâs that? New song?â His band mate asked when he overheard Seojun singing to himself.
âHmm? No, its Day6.â The song had been stuck in his head since the day he had sung it for Sujin.
âYouâre going to play a cover for your friend?â
âYeah.â It would be his send off to Jukyung. Like Kang Sujin, Seojun was going to put an end to his chapter with Jukyung.
His bandmate put the song on their speaker. After the first verse he declared, âYah! You canât play a breakup song at a wedding.â
âIs it too obvious? I was hoping I could get away with it.â Seojun scratched the back of his head, stretching. He had been on his computer for hours now.
âTake it off. Choose something else.â
Seojun went back through his list of songs that he wanted to play. There was one other song that he had discovered recently by a disbanded group. He had really connected with the lyrics and it wasnât a breakup song.
âHow about this?â Seojun played it.
âYeah, thatâs perfect. Use that for the couple dance.â His bandmate said.
The anticipation of the pain kept Seojun up all night. He worried about how he might behave or what might happen. The next day he woke up grouchy and depressed.
âWoah! Why do you look like a ghost?â His bandmate had said when Seojun arrived that morning. He would be going to the wedding with his band, given that they were performing. This might have been easier if he had gone with his friends.
Donât worry. Iâm here if you need me. Sujin had texted that morning. But Seojun was done relying on Sujin like a crutch. He would deal with things on his own. He didnât want Sujin to think that all he was good for was complaining about his broken heart.
Seojun waited for the pain to hit when they arrived at the location but it didnât. The wedding planner helped Seojun and his band set up along with members of Seojunâs own staff. When everything was good to go, Seojun took his leave to meet Jukyung in the bridal room where everyone was taking pictures with her.
Here it comes. The pain. How would it feel? Would Seojun cry again?
âSeojun-ah! Youâre here!â Jukyung said. She looked stunning in her beautiful white dress. âHurry! Get in the picture!â
Everyone was there, already positioned for the shot. Seojun joined Sujin to the side. She was wearing a tasteful black pant suit that fit her well. She was wearing makeup which Seojun noticed looked similar to one of Jukyungâs tutorials.
âHow does it feel?â He whispered to Sujin.
âMeh.â She replied. âYou?â
It was strange. Seojun didnât feel anything. âOddly enough, I feel fine.â Surely he was in shock. The pain would hit any time soon.Â
It was a while before the pictures were done. Seojunâs cheeks felt sore from all of the smiling.
âCome with me to see Suho.â Sujin held up her arm and Seojun took it. She escorted him to where Suho was receiving his guests.
âLee Su! Congratulations!â Sujin hugged him. Seojun did the same.
âYah! I canât believe weâre old enough to get married.â Seojun commented. Suho laughed.
Chorong and the Seojun Squad came over too, patting a blushing Suho on the back.
Seojun couldnât help but think that Seyeon would have loved to have seen this. Sujin sensed his sadness and bumped shoulders with him.
âOkay?â
âUh-huh.â Seojun smiled. Oddly enough he was. The pain still hadnât hit.
A couple of girls walked up to him and asked him whether he really was the Han Seojun they were fans of.
âOf course!â Seojun puffed his chest and signed their autographs. He couldnât see it but he could feel Sujinâs disgusted gaze on his back. When they were gone, Seojun turned to Sujin with an arrogant grin.
âAh, I hope more people wonât bother me for my autograph.â He said in fake modesty.
âYou should be grateful to have any fans.â She scoffed at him.
âUgh. Youâre too mean, Sujin-ah.â Seojun pouted.
âUgh. Youâre too childish, Seojun-ah.â Sujin mimicked him.
âUm. Excuse me.â A shy looking girl approached Seojun.
âOh, you want an autograph too?â Seojun had a pen ready. Sujin gave him her most scathing side eye.
âUm actuallyââ
âYou want a picture too? Sorry but Iâm not allowed to take pictures at the moment. But Iâll sign if you like.â
The girl blushed deeply. âNo, umââ
âOh I get it.â Seojun swiped his hair dramatically from his forehead. âYouâre here to confess to me. Well then I should let you knowââ
âTheyâdlikeyoubackonstage!â The girl quickly blurted. âTheyâd like you to join your band. The ceremony is about to begin.â
Sujin laughed uproariously, that clear gurgle of pure, high pitched happiness that Seojun often enjoyed. But not in this moment. Not when his arrogance had been so efficiently deflated.
âSure. Iâll be right there.â He mumbled to the girl who scurried away. Sujin was still laughing. âFound that funny, did you?â Seojun said, but it was not a reprimand. He liked that she was happy.
âYes.â Sujin wiped away tears.
âYouâre going to regret making fun of me when I perform.â He said, comically pulling the lapels of his jacket before leaving.
The lights dimmed as the wedding began. The Master of Ceremonies kicked things off, guiding everyone through everything. The band only played instrumental now. Suho entered first. Jukyung entered after him, looking every bit the ethereal angel that she was.
The couple exchanged their wows and drank the traditional wine. They then bowed to each other and bowed to their guests. Even in the darkness, Seojun could pick out Sujin. From the light glittering off her cheeks he could tell she was crying. He was too. But these were happy tears. His friends were about to make a new journey in their life together and he was happy for them. Truly. That pain he had dreaded over Jukyungâs wedding never did show up. Perhaps it never would. All he could feel was excitement for his closest friends.
Seojun had only one regret, that Seyeon hadnât been able to see this moment. Seyeonâs was the one absence he always felt. In that moment, Han Seojun swore that he saw Seyeon among the guests. He saw his friend smile to Lee Suhoâs and then to him. But Seojun blinked and Seyeon was gone but Seojun would keep that image of Seyeon similing with him forever.
Once the formal ceremony was over, it was time for the real party to begin. Seojun and his band turned up the performance, raising the mood of the room. People danced and sang along with them as they played so well that Sujin realized she could no longer make fun of Seojun when he bragged about his band.
The band then slowed things down, the set finally reaching the song Seojun was excited to play. He emptied his mind of everything but that one song and how it made him feel. This was for Suho and Jukyung and he was going to give his best performance tonight.
The bride and groom took center stage and swayed as Seojun played a softer version of Haru by a lesser known band, Royal Pirates. His rich baritone filled the room as everyone listened, entranced.
âYouâre not a traditional beauty, but I like you, you who gets more attractive everyday.â
Seojun had never understood why people considered her attractive. To him, beauty had never mattered. But as he had gotten to know her, he found her to be more beautiful that how others described her.
âYou donât have a feminine voice, but the more I hear it, the more I get attached.â
He could hear her now, scolding him, yelling at him, throwing witty remarks at him that caused him whiplash, which was just his heart beating really fast.
âI canât call you often, but I always miss you. Â Each minute, each second. Yeah-yeah.â
When he thought about it, they never really hung out as much as he did with Suho or his Seojun Squad. Most of the time Seojun was busy with work and so was she. But he still looked forward to the times he would meet her again.
âAn entire day would pass just by looking at you. If I look at you, I canât do anything else. Oooooooh. An entire day would pass just by thinking of you. I wonât be able to sleep at thoughts of you. But I canât help it, an entire day would pass just because of you.â
Time did fly when they were together. Whether he liked her or hated her, he had to admit. She was never boring. Even through the mundane stuff, she always kept his attention. With her brows furrowed as she concentrated, her mouth turned like an ânâ. He smiled whenever he thought about it.
âWe have so many differences. But you fill up what I lack. No matter how much I see you, youâre always beautiful. No matter what anyone says.â
She was always ahead of him; so much smarter and stronger. Beating him at everything. Well, everything exceptâwait. He never played basketball with Jukyung.
Seojun missed a note. The guitar twanged awkwardly as he stopped singing. His hands were shaking but he didnât have time to digest what had just happened. The moment only lasted a half-second; Seojun had recovered quickly and continued. No one paid attention to his little mess up, but his hands were still shaking, and his heart felt like it would burst.
He couldnât think about it. But how couldnât he? This song had been for her all along. He had been staring at Kang Sujin the entire time he was performing, without even knowing it.
âAn entire day would pass just by looking at you. If I look at you, I canât do anything else. Oooooooh. An entire day would pass just by thinking of you. I wonât be able to sleep at thoughts of you. But I canât help it, an entire day would pass just because of you.â
The base guitarist for his band leaned over to him when the song was done.
âThought you lost your footing for a bit there.â
âYou noticed? Did anyone else did?â
âNah, I think youâre safe. But are you okay? Youâre shaking.â
âNothing.â Seojun said, more to himself, âIts⌠its nothing.â
ix.
He never got to see her again at the wedding. The band was surrounded by fans once they finished so they had to be escorted out. Their food had been arranged separately for privacy. By the time Seojun got the chance to break free, Sujin, along with most of the guests, had left.
Which was good because he needed to settle himself before he said anything to anyone. He couldnât make heads or tails of what had happened.
âI like Kang Sujin? Ridiculous. Totally, ridiculous. This would never happen!â
Be that as it may, his heart still acted strangely when he got a text from her asking if he was okay. She was worried about him since Jukyung and Suho were now married. He told her tersely that he was busy and couldnât meet. Then threw his phone away when he realized he actually really wanted to meet her.
It was the first time that I felt that there was someone else who could understand me and understand what I was going through.
Seojun could still remember his irritation when Sujin had told him why she liked Lee Suho. He had resented the fact that yet another girl saw Lee Suho as perfect. How could Han Seojun ever compare to the perfectly perfect Lee Suho? He and Sujin had ten years between them and a shared tragedy with their fathers that Seojun didnât have.
Ah-nee, canât I be someone who understands? Canât she see that I get her too?
âRidiculous. Why would I want her to think I understand her? Ridiculous.â
If Han Seojun had to answer the What, When, Where and Why of his feelings, he would not be able to put it into words. His feelings were intense and complicated. Too complicated for even him to comprehend. Which is why the braincell that he shared with Suho decided that he must be mistaken and that he didnât actually have any feelings for Sujin.
âAh-ne-da. I must have been overwhelmed because of Jukyung. Yes, that must be it. It must be a defense mechanism. Iâm only thinking about her to protect myself, because Iâm still not over Jukyung.â
It made sense. She was the only other girl he was close to in his squad, and they had been hanging out together more than they used to. His heart must have just gotten confused for a moment. Yes, that was it and nothing more.
The group did not meet each other for a while. Suho and Jukyung had gone off to their honeymoon. Suah and Taehoon had their own things. Seojun only met up with Chorong and Co. but his heart was never in those meetings.
He wouldnât meet up with her. She tried texting and calling but he always gave her an excuse.
Why did we start meeting so much in the first place? He hadnât noticed when it had happened, but Sujin had become someone he had come to rely on and this he only noticed when he started avoiding her.
âSeojun, youâre not coming to the flower festival?â Chorong asked, shaking him out of his thoughts.
âHuh? What flower festival?â
âAh-nee, where is your mind these days? You attend it every year! Did you forget?â
Oh right. Seojun always did like to see the flower exhibitions held once a year. He always got flowers for his mother and sister when he went. It may have seemed like a ridiculous hobby for a boy to be so interested in flowers. But Seojun unabashedly liked them and of course, Chorong and Co. were always there to go with him.
âOf course Iâm going to attend. Wae?â
âSujinnie was asking if she could tag along with us. Suah and Taehoon are not around so she has no one to go with.â
Sujinnie?! Seojun blinked rapidly. âYa, since when are you and Kang Sujin close?â
âWaegurae? Arenât we all friends with her now? Did something happen?â
Seojun put on a straight face, âAh-nee!â He exclaimed in a pitch too high, âNothing happened. Iâm just surprised, as all.â
âAigoo. Did you guys fight? Sujin did say you havenât been replying to her texts recently.â
Seojun tried hiding his curiosity, âYouâve spoken to her?â He said, as nonchalantly as he could, which wasnât nonchalant at all.
âOf course. We all had drinks yesterday.â
âWhat?! Why the hell did you guys meet her and not me?â
âSeojun, she did text you about it.â One of his friends pointed out.
âYeah! And why are you acting so weird? Do you hate Kang Sujin again?â Chorong asked.
âYa! Donât hate her! We like her now!â
âYes!â Half the group said together.
âArasso! Arasso! Calm down.â Seojun waved at them to chill. It wasnât as if he minded that Kang Sujin was hanging out with his friends. But he did feel a sense of betrayal that he didnât know about it.
âSo, how about it? Will you go?â Chorong asked.
The flower festival was an exhibition where all flower vendors came over to show off their best products. People looking for suppliers of flowers and the public in general could attend, buy flowers or just enjoy the various arrangements.
Seojun went with Chorong and the others. Sujin was there waiting for them.
âYa Han Seojun! Youâre alive!â She lit up when she saw him, punching him in the chest with a brutal force only she had.
âYah! How could you hurt an idol like that?â Seojun rubbed his chest in pain.
âOh, sorry. Did I hurt you?â
âNot at all!â Seojun said, âIâm a man. I donât get hurt.â
âPfft. Sure.â Sujin grinned.
They went through the various stalls that showcased the various beautiful flowers. The group seemed to have broken off. Chorong was led away by his girlfriend to take some pictures. The boys all banded around a strange, evil looking plant like school children. Seojun and Sujin seemed to have taken a track of their own.
âYou donât want to take pictures?â Seojun asked, pointing at Chorong and his girlfriend who were stopping at every stall.
âI donât care for that sort of thing. Wae? You want me to take yours?â
âNo. We should take on together.â
Seojun took out his phone and pulled Sujin closer, taking a selfie.
âYa, you canât even see the flowers.â Sujin complained.
âYes, you can.â Seojun put a hand to his cheek. âRight here. Iâm the flower.â
Sujinâs lip curled in disdain. âAh, right.â She said dryly. Seojun laughed and she couldnât help but smile too.
As a regular attendee, Seojun knew most of the repeat vendors there. He took Sujin around, introducing her to the people who knew him and showing her the various flowers he liked. Sujin listened to him go on at length about where the flowers came from and what they meant.
âYou know the language of flowers?â Sujin asked, thinking back to the white tulips and the yellow roses he had gotten her way back when.
âDangyunhaji! Every man should know flowers. How else will you impress the ladies?â
Sujin chuckled. âYou know if being an idol doesnât pan out, you can always be a florist.â
âIâm too pretty to be a florist. The flowers would all wither in shame.â
Sujin patted his head, sarcastically remarking, âAigoo, our Seojun has suffered so much for being so good looking. It must have been so difficult, living like this.â
It felt nice being with Sujin again. Seojun felt oddly energetic; like he could run a mile and not break a sweat. He babbled about this and that and wondered if Sujin was getting bored. But she never was, she listened and nodded and responded when need be. Time flew by and before he knew it, they had finished going through the festival.
He pulled at the sleeve of her coat, âThereâs something else you should see.â
In the back corner, hidden away from the main area were the small level vendors who could only afford the cheaper stalls. It was a street that led away from the festival. Only a couple of people were around.
âThese people donât earn that much because theyâre always placed at the back. But they have the best flowers.â
Seojun introduced her to the people that were running the stall, all of whom he knew by name. Some of them gave Sujin flowers for free. She gratefully took them.
The day was almost ending, the slow sunset had begun. A lot petals had been shed. The street with these vendors was covered in these petals, making it look like a path made entirely of flowers.
âThis is really beautiful, Seojun-ah.â Sujin said, admiring the street.
âYeah.â Seojun said, looking at her.
One of the stalls was filled entirely with tulips. Bright yellow owns, pretty pink ones, eccentric multi-colored ones. Seojun pulled out a purple one and gave it to Sujin.
âHere you go, Princess.â Purple tulips represented regality. Sujin smiled.
âAaandâŚâ Seojunâs picked out a red one. âHere.â He said. Then quickly-â a little too quicklyâ he added. âAh-Because it matches your coat.â He pointed at Sujinâs red coat.
Sujin looked at the flower, then back at him. But said nothing.
They strolled over to a bridge that overlooked the entire festival. The descending sun had set everything in a warm glow. The air smelled sweet with all of the flowers. Petals flew in the air.
âHere.â Sujin handed the tulips back to Seojun.
âWhy? Theyâre for you.â
Sujin smiled. âPhabo. You should be giving them to the girl you like. And tell her what they mean when you give them.â
Seojun sighed wistfully, âThe girl I like doesnât know the language of flowers.â
Sujin hit him lightly with the tulips. âI wasnât talking about Lim Jukyung. Go and like someone else, and bring her here, and give them these.â
âI wasnât talking about Lim Jukyung either.â
âMwo-ya. You have someone you like?â
Seojunâs bit his lip. âYeah. But Iâm going to give up.â
âWaaaee? You only just got over Lim Jukyung!â
âBecause this girl likes someone else too.â
âOmo, chincha?â Sujin laughed. âAgain? Ya, Han Seojun, canât you choose a better girl to like?â
Seojun gave a sad chuckle. âI know, right?â
âWho is she? Do I know her?â
âYeah.â
âWho is it? Tell me!â
âNope. Secret.â
âUgh, how stingy. At least give me a hint. What does she look like?â
Seojun looked at Sujin, âSheâs beautiful. Very beautiful.â
âAyyy, thatâs every girl out there.â
âWell, thatâs all the hint Iâm giving.â
Sujin punched his arm but relented. It was perhaps better to not know who Seojun liked. Sujin would have been filled with jealousy again and she didnât want that.
It was curious however, that Seojun found someone he liked, and she didnât even know. It was curiouser that this new girl had someone she liked too. Just like Sujin, Han Seojun hadâ
Sujin looked at the tulips in her hand. They stood out among the other flowers the various vendors had given her. Sujin looked at Seojun, who was busy admiring the sunset.
It was strange, but in that moment, she remembered something her teacher had once said.
Some of you donât know what it is you really want. And some of you do know but youâre hesitant. However, opportunities come without warning and you must be prepared to take advantage of it.
âHan Seojun.â
âHmm?â
Sujin pointed the flowers at him, tilting her head slightly. Much like he had done a long time ago when he had asked her Do you think Iâm handsome?
âDo you like me?â
And just like she had, Seojun answered immediately, with no remorse or regret. âYes.â
Like the cool girl she was, Sujin didnât overreact or exclaim in surprise. She only casually said, âI like you too. So, we should date.â
A beat of a pause. One, two three.
âWhat? What?! WHAT?! You like me? You like me?! Me?! As in, Han Seojun?â
âYes you, you idiot. Manhi Joahae.â
âWhat? Icanâtbelievethis. How? Why? Wait, you asked me if I liked you. Did you already know?â Seojun appeared as if his brain had malfunctioned.
Sujin grinned. âYou phabo, even if I didnât know flower language, I could still tell by the red tulip. Ah-nee, red is the universal color for romance. Didnât you know?â
Seojunâs face was a mixture of wonder, shock and pure happiness. His eyes were wide, cheeks red and pulled up, mouth hanging open in a slow smile. He had no words to speak. He felt like he would explode like a firecracker and light up the sky in sparks.
âYou like me? You really like me?â
Sujin closed the distance between them, pulling at the lapel of his coat. She gave him only a chaste peck on his lips before moving back, blushing. âItâs official now. So, no backing out, okay?â
His mind, that was already haywire, went blank.
He pulled Sujin by the waist, pressing her entire form to him and cupped her face with his other hand. The kiss he gave her was intense and she gasped before giving in to him. Sujin felt she could stay like this forever. The kiss only ended because their mouths kept pulling back in an uncontrollable grin.
âYou like me?â Seojun asked.
âYes.â
He kissed her again but they couldnât stop smiling. Both of them were shaking.
âYou like me?â He asked again.
âYes.â She replied again, chuckling.
And they kissed again.
âYou like me?â
âYes!â She laughed.
And they kissed again. And he asked again, she replied again, and they kissed again and again and again.
 EPILOGUE
When Seojun and Sujin told Jukyung and the others that they were dating, it had been the first of April. So naturally everyone assumed they were joking. Seojun and Sujin hadnât realized this and were surprised at the luke warm response that everyone gave to their announcement.
âYes. We believe you.â Suah had said and Sujin missed her sarcastic tone.
when Seojun gushed over Sujin, the group all just looked at each other thinking, Wow, theyâre really dedicated to this prank.
And even when they left together, the group all gathered and said;
âYou believe them?â
âWhy pull a prank thatâs so obvious?â
âExactly! Han Seojun and Kang Sujin? No way.â
Only Suho had been the one to keep his silence and not say anything.
But when they all met up again and Seojun and Sujin acted like a couple again, everyone gasped in shock.
âWhat?!â
âYou guys are actually dating?!â
âHow?! How did this happen?â
Only Suho had been the one who wasnât surprised. âCongratulations. Iâm happy for the two of you.â He had said warmly.
âSujin-ah, what about our affair?â Jukyung said despondently, making a crying face.
âIâll let you know when Seojunnie goes on tour.â Sujin assured her quietly.
âYAH!â Both Suho and Seojun exclaimed in protest, pulling their girlfriends away from each other.
âLim Jukyung, you keep your hands off my girlfriend.â Seojun warned.
âI will. But thereâs no guarantee sheâll keep her hands off me.â
Chorong and Co. had a similar reaction, they all exploded into shock and happiness at the news. Only Chorong seemed unsurprised.
âSo you finally figured out your feelings?â Chorong asked Seojun.
âYou knew?â
âFriends know.â
To Sujin, Chorong said, âSujin-ah, I respect you a lot. But if you hurtââ
âArasso, arasso. I wonât hurt your precious Han Seojun.â
âI meant donât hurt me if he ever pisses you off. You scare the shit out of me.â
When enough time had passed and they knew they had to tell their parents, they went to Seojunâs mother first. The woman had been pleasantly surprised by this news and declared Sujin a part of the family immediately. She had met Sujin before and had taken a liking to her immediately but now that she and Seojun were dating, the woman gushed and cried.
âAh, I have another daughter now.â She said, kissing Sujin on the forehead.
The tricky part was Sujinâs mother, who was still a little pissed over the scandal.
âWhat will people say if you announce this online?!â The woman had argued.
âBut mom,â Sujin made a flower pot with her hands around Seojunâs face, âlook at how handsome he is.â And that was enough to entice Mrs. Kang.
Receiving so much happiness and love from everyone was an unfamiliar experience for Sujin. So much so that it terrified her. She felt like she was in a dream that would shatter any minute and she would suddenly wake up back in her old bed with her father banging on the door, screaming at her that she was worthless.
It was this image that jerked Sujin awake in the middle of the night. She sat up straight, her heart was pounding, her hands felt sweaty and clammy. Her fatherâs shouting was still ringing in her ears.
Seojun stirred on the other side of the bed, âBad dream?â His rich baritone was husky from sleep but it cut through the darkness of the room and Sujin didnât feel so scared anymore.
âUm-hmm.â
âCome here.â Seojun patted her side of the bed. She fell back into his arms, nuzzling her nose in his neck.
He sang to her softly, his deep voice soothing her. âLove, love the stars. Love, love the moon. Nothing has really changed. Itâs still the same air. With the same bed looking at the same ceiling.â
Sujinâs hands stopped feeling clammy and dirty and soon enough, she drifted off to sleep, dreaming of flowers and sunsets.

White Tulips - a JunJin fanfic 1/3
Full Story: Part 2, Part 3
Hello everyone! I hope everyone who is reading this is healthy and safe. This is a fanfic about my favorite characters, Kang Sujin and Han Seojun. I really love these two together so I wrote what I had hoped to see in True Beauty. This is my first time writing fanfiction so its not that good. But I hope you still enjoy it. I didnât change anything from True Beauty, rather continued the events from the ending with a focus on giving Sujin the redemption arc she so rightly deserved.Â
I really have to thank everyone on the shooters gc, especially @prodmina, for being so amazing and awesome. Never before have I come accross such amazing, wonderful, open and friendly group of people. Iâm not that active on the chat, but I am so grateful it exists. Thank you to everyone on there. This is dedicated to you all.
Pairing:Â Kang Sujin x Han Seojun

PART 1
i.
If you asked Han Seojun why he loved Lim Jukyung, he wouldnât be able to answer. His feelings for her overwhelmed him to the point of inarticulation. His heart still skipped a beat every time he saw her at dinner with their group. He still found himself staring at her from time to time, unable to look away from her beauty. He even wrote songs about her, his only form of expressing his love for her.
He still thought of her in every free minute he had between practice, performance and recording sessions. When he couldnât see her, he would watch her make-up tutorials online. He was proud of how far she had come with her career as a make-up artist. Her popularity was a source of delight for him. It was only appropriate that everyone see how amazing she was.
The only problem was, Lim Jukyung didnât belong to him. She belonged to Lee Suho, his best friend.
Seojun was happy for the two of them. They were the best people he knew and even he had to acknowledge that they belonged together. Which was why, having these feelings were burdensome for Seojun.
It was burdensome, seeing them all lovey-dovey with each other and talking about their lives together. Normally Seojun would have faked a smile, but when they were all together in a group he scowled without reserve. He got away with it because right beside Suho and Jukyung, sat Taehoon and Suah who were the kind of cheesy couple that made anyone barf.
In fact, just the thought of Suah and Taehoon fawning over each other made him cringe. Even now as he walked into the special private room they frequented for their gatheringsâprivate due to Seojunâs and Jukyungâs popularityâSeojun was pushing back his gag reflex at the squealing he could hear outside.
He scolded them as he entered the room. âGuys! I can hear you all the way from the front entrance. Why are you always soââ He stopped in his tracks. There, between a giggling Jukyung and beaming Suah sat the worst person Seojun had ever known.
Her.
He had heard peripherally about how she had changed now, having reformed as a charity worker. She had apparently apologized to Jukyung about the shitty things she had done before. As if an apology could change anything.
Han Seojun knew Jukyung had forgiven Kang Sujin. That woman had even attended Heekyungâs wedding. But Seojun didnât understand why she had to invade their special gatherings.
The room had fallen silent. Everyone awkwardly stared at Seojun, then Sujin.
âItâs been a while, Han Seojun.â She said with a polite smile. Her voice deeper than most girlsâ. He always hated her voice and its lack of femininity.
Ya Han Seojun, are you a gangster?!
Seojun pushed the memory away.
âAh-aah! Han Seojun. You must be surprised.â Jukyung said with forced cheerfulness. âI invited Sujin to join us today.
Seojun merely flicked a cynical brow at Jukyung and took his usual seat besides Suho. Suah and Jukyung nervously returned to their conversation.
The uncomfortable air in the room subsided after a while and everyone chatted cheerfully with each other. Everyone except Han Seojun.
âI saw your performance on TV. You looked good.â Suho told Seojun.
âWhy the hell have you invited Kang Soojin?â Seojun asked Suho in a hushed tone.
âSheâs a friend, of course sheâs invited.â
âWhy are you friends with her again?â
âSeojun, its fine.â
Seojun opened his mouth to protest but before he could, Sujin interrupted him.
âYa, Han Seojun. I saw your performance on TV. I didnât know you could sing so well.â She said, not sounding too impressed. âYou were great.â
It was a peace offering. A way to start off on the right foot.
Seojun gave a sarcastic smile and tilted his head. âYou should have known I was that good. I performed in school, didnât I?â
âOh right. I guess I didnât really pay attention before.â
âYou were too busy giving all of your attention to Lee Suho. I donât expect you to have noticed anybody else.â
This time, the silence in the room was palpable. Taehoon audibly gulped. The only person unfazed was Sujin.
âYeah. I was obsessed with Suho.â She said simply. âBut now that I look back,â she made a frame with her forefingers and thumbs, âI think what the hell does Jukyung see in you?â
âYa!â Suho protested so seriously that Jukyung giggled, breaking the tension.
âHonestly Jukyung. Youâd be better off with me as your boyfriend.â Suah and Taehoon joined the laughter.
âYa Kang Sujin, you stay away from my girlfriend.â Suho protested, pouting.
âYouâre too serious, Lee Suho. Jukyung needs someone more fun.â
âAt least I donât go around kicking people in the face.â
âYou wouldnât be able to do it, even if you tried.â
âI know jujitsu, you know.â
âOkay, okay!â Jukyung said. And that was it, the friends were back to normal.
Seojun kept out of the conversations, eating and drinking on his own. No one dared to bother him lest he say something else to ruin the mood.
Han Seojun didnât care to maintain a good mood. He had no tolerance for people like Kang Sujin; people who were bullies. And especially not when said bully had hurt someone he cared about very deeply. He didnât buy this act that Sujin was pulling. He knew, that people never changed.
The conversation turned to Sujin and her charity work overseas. She talked animatedly about the children she and her non-profit group worked for. It made Seojunâs blood boil, how she was using a noble cause as a front for her true cold-hearted personality. That angel bullshit may work on others, but it would not work on Seojun.
He kept a close eye on her the entire time, almost glaring to the point where Suho had to poke him with his elbow to get him to look away. But Suho was blind, he should have seen how Sujinâs face gave the barest of glances of pain when he and Jukyung kissed each other and pulled each otherâs cheeks and talked about living together.
âOh, you guys share an apartment?â No one else noticed the high-pitchiness of Sujinâs voice when she asked this. No one, expect Seojun.
And then there was the stolen glances at Suho. That was the final nail in the coffin. Seojun was convinced that Sujin was pretending to be over Suho. She was still in love with him. And that was a problem.
âWhatâs wrong with you?â Suho confronted Seojun outside, when it was just the two of them waiting for the others to leave.
âWhatâs wrong with me? Whatâs wrong with you? Donât you know the kind of person Kang Sujin is? How can you let her in again?â
âCalm down, Seojun-ah. That was all years ago.â
âThat doesnât change the fact that she hurt Jukyung.â
âSheâs not a bad person. I know her better than you. She made a mistake.â
âShe knew what she was doing.â
âHavenât you ever made a mistake before? Or are you telling me that blaming me for Seyeonâs death was the right thing to do?â
Seojun was quiet.
âSeojun-ah, donât take this the wrong way. You have a tendency to judge too quickly, and misunderstand. If you really hate her that much then talk to her and ask her about her reasons. Donât just go on assuming something is the way it is because you think so.â
Seojun grit his teeth.
âShall we go?â Jukyung came up from behind, taking Suhoâs arm. The rest of the group was behind her.
âYeah. Bye everyone. See you next time.â The couple waved as others waved back. âSeojun, I hope youâll think about what I said.â
Seojun just nodded and waved too. He watched Jukyung and Suho disappear into the crowd on the street.
The rest of them said their goodbyes and went their way, Seojun leaving after giving Sujin a distrusting side-eye.
ii.
I donât want to be a fool like you and be just friends, only to like him one sidedly.
It had been such a long time ago when Kang Sujin had said this to Han Seojun, but he remembered it like it was yesterday. That and a couple of other memories that played in his mind, causing whiplash.
Ya Han Seojun, are you a gangster?!
Those words especially felt like a slap on his face. He could actually feel his cheek burning at the image of Kang Sujin standing there in her uniform, telling off him and his boys about bullying Jukyung.
He had respected her back then, for having the guys to stand up for her friend. Even though she had been all haughty like some arrogant princess and thought him a fool, he had still respected her. He had never expected her to turn out to be such a vile person.
Am I handsome?
Yes.
No, no, no. That was one incident he refused to remember. It meant nothing. Only a source of surprise at her bluntness, nothing more.
âSeojun, weâre going to hit the showers now, are you done?â
Seojun didnât hear Chorong as he ran on the treadmill. His body was in the gym but his mind as fully occupied by Kang Sujin, as it had been for the past week.
âHan Seojun, are you listening?â
She must have had a reason for suddenly showing up out of the blue. She had disappeared completely when the truth about her had been revealed online. Obviously, she ran away like a coward. If she was back now, it must be because she wanted something. Kang Sujin could be very calculating and manipulative.
Was it because of Lee Suho?
âHan Seojun!â
Chorongâs voice snapped Seojun out of his thoughts and he fell backward from his treadmill.
âOOOH! Are you okay?â
âYA! Why would you do that?!â Seojun snapped at Chorong as he got back up. He checked himself for bruises though his dignity caught the worst of it.
âAh-nee, I called you so many times. You were totally checked out.â Chorong explained.
âDoes that make sense? Why would I be checked out?â
âWell⌠you have been out of it this past week. Has something been bothering you?â
Something had been bothering him; something with silky, black hair and long legs.
âWhat? You met Kang Sujin?â His entire posse sounded as he told them about her return. Seojun put a finger in his ears as he was bombarded with questions.
âDid she apologize to Jukyung? Are they friends now?â
âDid she tell where she was all that time?â
âIs she still pretty?â
âIs she single?â
âWhat is she doing these days?â
Seojun ignored all of these useless inquiries.
âHey! Did you al forget the kind of person she is? How could you ask if she is still pretty?â
âShe must be. I bet sheâs still the same.â
âShe was never pretty.â Seojun declared. âI can never understand what people see in her.â
âThatâs because you only have eyes for one.â One of them teased and the rest of them Ooh-ed like school girls.
âAh, shikkeureo! Shut up!â Chorong said in defense of Seojun. Out of everyone, Chorong understood best how much Seojun still pined for Jukyung. âSo, what exactly is bothering you about Kang Sujin?â
âI donât trust her. Especially around Jukyung.â
âWae? Do you think she might still be after Lee Suho.â
âYes. At least I suspect so. Iâm not sure what game sheâs playing at but Iâm not buying this angel persona she has on.â
âSo? You canât exactly stop Jukyung from choosing to be friends with her.â
âI feel I can convince Jukyung if I talk to her.â
âShe might just tell you to try to get along with Sujin.â
This was true. Jukyung was too nice and trusting with people. Seojun thought long and hard.
âIâll have to protect her. Iâll have to keep Kang Sujin away from Jukyung.â
iii.
He had been on his way to the studio, casually riding by on his bike, when he saw her. She was in some blue vest, clearly a uniform of some sort. She was handing out fliers to people who passed by, smiling widely with that fake innocent look she had perfected. What a crock of shit. Seojun swerved around and parked his bike, then sauntered up to her with an amused expression.
She lit up when she saw him approach, waving animatedly at him. Her happiness upon seeing him surprised him so much that he stumbled and almost fell. He played it off as nothing, hoping she hadnât noticed.
âYa Han Seojun, gimme your autograph.â She grinned as she pushed forward a petition to help kids in Africa.
Seojun didnât take it. âWhat are you doing?â He asked rhetorically, looking at the pictures of children she had set up for people to see along with information as to how to donate. So sheâs using these poor kids for her own selfish reasons?
âHuh?â Sujin hadnât missed his tone. âJust sign it, its for a good cause. And being charitable will help your image too, no?â She tried appealing to his logic.
âOoooh,â Seojun mocked, âSo you keep up the pretense even when youâre not around Jukyung? Isnât this a too much, Kang Sujin?â
Sujinâs smile dropped into a snarl, âWhat?â
âIâm on to you, Kang Sujin.â Seojun got up in her face. âAh-nee, if youâre going to pretend to be all reformed then you shouldnât make it too obvious. Charity work is a little too on the nose, donât you think?â
Sujin stared at him in shock and anger. Seojun suddenly recalled how well Sujin had kicked those thugs who had kidnapped Jukyung back in high school and gulped. He hoped she wouldnât try to kill him in public but it was too late to take back what he said.
âHan SeojunâŚâ Sujin said through clenched teeth and Seojun prepared for the worst.
Ya Han Seojun! Are you a gangster?!
But she said nothing. Instead she calmed herself, exhaling through her mouth.
âI probably deserve that.â She said, not backing away or cowering from him. She pushed the flier in his chest, âBut donât make these kids suffer because of your anger towards me. They could really use the support.â
Seojun looked down at the flier. He couldnât sign anything without the consent of his agency. So he folded it up and pocketed it. Along with his pride. He could put his ego aside for a good cause.
âThese kids deserve a better person representing them than you.â Seojun said. Sujin pressed her lips tightly.
âArenât you being a little too harsh? Iâm not the same person anymore. And Jukyung hasââ
âYou may have everyone else fooled, Kang Sujin. But I will always remember what you are.â With that, Seojun walked away, his hand twitching.
 iv.
The next time they all met up, Seojun made sure to sit between Sujin and Jukyung. He felt uncomfortable because he had to bump shoulders with her, but he would bear it for Jukyung.
Suho gave Seojun a warning look when they all sat down. Donât do anything excessive, the look said. Seojun ignored it.
He could feel Sujinâs stiffness beside him. This was uncomfortable for her too. Good. If Iâm suffering, she should too. But she kept up her polite façade, smiling like nothing bothered her.
Seojun made sure to keep her isolated from Jukyung. He didnât let her speak to Jukyung, didnât let her participate in the competitions. He even didnât let her eat properly.
âJukyung-ah, did I show you my pictures fromââ
âJukyung-ah, has your sister told you about the tour weâre planning?â Seojun interrupted.
Jukyung would be at a loss as to who to answer and Seojun would move forward, blocking Sujin.
When Suho or Jukyung tried to ask Sujin what she wanted to eat first, he took the first dish he saw and shoved it in front of her. Â
âHere, have this Kang Sujin.â
âI donât want it.â She said with an unamused look.
âTake it.â He ordered in his intimidating baritone.
They glared at each other , Sujinâs face twitching with annoyance. Seojun mentally dared her to snap at him but she swallowed her pride, quite literally, and put on a fake smile.
âThanks.â She said dryly.
By the end of dinner, Han Seojun had successfully managed to annoy Kang Sujin. Her fake persona was slipping as she clenched her jaw and exhaled excessively to keep her temper in check. Seojun guessed he would have her true personality on display by the end of the night.
âHan Seojun what are you doing?â Suho confronted him outside.
âWhat did I do?â Seojun feigned ignorance.
âYou need to stoââ
âHan Seojun. Letâs talk.â Sujin strode up to them from behind, her face set with determination.
âNo.â Seojun said.
âI wasnât asking. I was telling.â And there she was, the old Sujin. Gone was the politeness and friendly demeanor. She stared boldly at him, almost challenging him to refuse again.
âSeojun-ah, just hear her out.â Jukyung broke through their staring match. Seojun could never say no to her. But he didnât get a chance to say yes either.
Sujin simply commanded, âFollow me,â and grabbed the collar of his jacket, dragging him away.
âYa! What are you doing?!â But Kang Sujin was stronger than she looked and Seojun found himself being pulled against his will.
The rest of them could only stare.
âDo you think theyâll be alright?â Suah asked, concerned.
âNope. Iâm certain theyâll kill each other.â Suho replied nonchalantly.
âMy moneyâs on Sujin.â Taehoon and Suah said together.
âYouâre on.â Suho replied.
iv.
âAre you crazy? How could you grab me like that?â Seojun smoothened the collar of his coat that Sujin had bunched up in her fist. She had let go when he had said that he would follow enough times. They walked together, Sujin going ahead of him. He quickly put on his mask. âHow can a girl be so strong?â He said under his breath. Then spoke aloud, âIs this any way to treat an idol?â
Sujin suddenly turned on her heels, stopping Seojun in his tracks. She was a little too close for comfort and looked intimidated with that unfiltered anger on her face. âJust shut up and follow.â
Seojun put his hands on his hips, tilting his head. He was unimpressed by her tough attitude. He gestured forward with his chin, âThen move.â
He followed her, keeping a small distance between them. She marched forward, taking long strides with her long, long legs. She looked like a general going to war.
âShe calls me a thug. She should look at herself.â He mumbled.
Sujin led them to a secluded pocha, street food vendor with small plastic seats housed inside a plastic tent. Seojun adjusted his mask.
âRelax, no one here is going to recognize you.â Sujin said, sensing his discomfort. Indeed, when Seojun looked around, all he saw were hold ahjusshis getting drunk and babbling nonsense. None of them seemed like his fans.
Still, Sujin led them in a corner table and sat where he was hidden by her. She ordered two bottles of soju and side dishes for him. He simply watched with his arms crossed.
The silence between them was awkward and heavy. Neither of them said anything. Han Seojun openly stared at Sujin. Kang Sujin looked everywhere but him. The lady brought them their order. Sujin effortlessly opened a bottle and moved to fill his glass. Seojun put his hand on top of his glass to stop her.
With a sigh, he took the bottle from her and poured for himself. She followed suit. They both took a shot.
Sujin sat up straight, shuffling in her seat. She first looked down at her hands in her lap, then looked up, straight in his eyes.
âMianhae.â It took him by surprise. More than that, the regret on her face moved him. If only by an inch. âIâm sorry, Han Seojun. What I did back then⌠I was going through some personal issues, and I took it out on Jukyung. But even that is not a good enough excuse. I shouldnât have done what I did. And even what I said to you⌠even after you gave me a chance to delete the video⌠Iâm sorry.â She gulped and Seojun mirrored her. âYou were right. I was only destroying myself. I should have seen that. But I have changed now. Iâm not the same person. I know youâre important to Jukyung. So I hope we can get along from now on.â
Seojun took another shot. He took a minute, considering her words.
âIf its forgiveness you want, then Kang Sujin, there is nothing to forgive between us. Your fight was with Jukyung. Not me.â Sujin appeared relieved till Seojun added, âHowever, my problem with you isnât because of old grudges. I just canât trust you, Kang Sujin. I believe you still will hurt Jukyung, even if you donât mean to. And I canât let that happen.â
Sujinâs mouth became small. She jutted her jaw, pouring another shot for herself. She downed it aggressively before responding. âIâm not the same girl anymore. Iâm not in love withââ
âI keep hearing that youâve changed. But have you really? Can you honestly tell me that youâre over him?â
âI am over him.â
âBull shit. I saw the way you were looking Suho. All throughout dinnerââ
âArenât you just projecting your own feelings onto me?â Sujin interrupted.
Seojun laughed incredulously, âWhat?â
âThe one whoâs not over their unrequited love is you. Youâre not over Jukyung.â
âIs that so?â
âYes. All these years youâve been pretending to be her friend. Arenât you the one being two faced?â
âIâve already confessed to her. We even went on a date.â Seojun crossed his arms with a smirk.
This was news to Sujin, âAah. Is that so? Then isnât that more pathetic? Even though she clearly doesnât want youââ
âYa, Kang Sujin.â
ââyouâre still not over her. I too saw how you looked at her. With that pathetic puppy dog expression on your face. Donât you think this is awkward for Jukyung? Sitting there with her boyfriend andââ
âShut your damn mouth.â
âWae? Donât like it when the tables are turned on you?â Sujin and Seojun glared at each other with hatred. Seojun poured and downed a shot. Sujin swallowed and looked away. This was not how she imagined this conversation going.
âIâm not in love with her.â Seojun declared.
Sujin snorted, âHul. Then why is it you who is giving me this lecture and not Lee Suho? If Iâm really such a threat to Lim Jukyung, then shouldnât her boyfriend be the one to confront me? What gives you the right to treat me this way?â
Seojun paused. âI can give you a million reasons; that Iâm her friend, that even though Iâm not her boyfriend, she stills relies on me, that Iâm doing this out of humanity.â
Sujin scoffed.
âThat I donât want to lose another friend because of bullying.â
Sujinâs face fell. She licked her lips as she considered his point of view. Then, wordlessly, she poured him a drink.
âIâm not a bully. I never was. I did a shitty thing that Iâve apologized for and now Iâd like to move on with my life.â She poured herself a shot of soju too. âI care about Jukyung. I will always regret what I did to her. But I still have a chance at friendship and I am going to take it whether you like it or not.â
They both took the shot. Sujin poured them another.
âWe both care about Jukyung. And she would want us to get along, or at least pretend to for her sake.â Sujin gave Seojun a pointed look. The ball was in his court now.
Seojun remembered how uncomfortable Jukyung had been because of his hostility towards Sujin. True, Sujin wasnât the kind to be trusted. Seojun was a man of action, he didnât believe in hollow words. But it was also true that fighting with Sujin all the time would cause problems in their peaceful little group. And although he was sure that when it came to it, everyone would choose him and not her, he still held up the shot glass and said, âFor Jukyungâs sake.â
v.
The two drunken enemies staggered on the sidewalk, each supporting the other while trying not to fall; a drunk trying to steady another drunk.
âAh-nee-ya, Iâm not *hic* not in love with Jukyung. I don⌠I donâŚâ
âArassssso. And Iâmf the Pwincess of England.â Sujin slurred, pushing Seojun upright as she tried to hail a taxi.
âNa ah-nee-ya. Iâm not. Nope.â Seojun hiccuped.
âAh just sstand still!â Sujin pushed his body away but his arm was still draped over her shoulder.
âAh sshutup! Shut up you stupid Suijin!â Seojun started snickering at his own statement, âHehehe. Stupid Suji. Sujinnie phabo.â Seojun pushed his weight onto her, still chortling.
âAh stand still!!â Sujin wrapped an arm around his waist to hold him up. She was suddenly very aware of just how tall he was. Even with her own impressive height, he seemed too big.
A taxi finally stopped and Sujin struggled with pushing Seojun inside. She pushed him in with her legs when he bent over on the seat but refused to move further to give her room.
âWhere to?â The driver asked when they both were seated.
âHan Seojun, tell him your address.â
Seojun fell to the other side, passed out. Sujin, who herself felt like passing out, leaned over to tap his face, âHan Seojun? Ya! Wake uuup.â He did not.
âAre we leaving or not?â The driver asked impatiently.
Sujin shook Seojun again. He stirred, only to mumble Jukyungâs name and pass out on her shoulder again. Sujin looked at the driver helplessly.
 vi.
The first thing Seojun felt was the pounding headache, it brought him out of a very nice dream heâd been having that he promptly forgot. He could feel his legs sticking out from the side of the bed. In turning over, his elbow punched into something.
âOof! Ow! What the hell!â
Sujin kicked at him as she pressed her ribs in pain. They both were surprised to find themselves tangled in each other. It took them exactly three seconds to start screaming.
They both flew off the bed, Sujin hitting Seojun repeatedly with her pillow.
âOw! Ow! Ah! OW!â
âWhy. Are. You. In. My. Bed?!â
âWhy am I here? Why are you here?â
âThis is my room asshole!â
Seojun grabbed Sujinâs wrist to keep her from hitting him. He looked around and indeed it was Sujinâs room.
âWhat the hell happened?â He asked.
She kicked him in the shin, âHow the hell would I know? Explain yourself, Han Seojun!â
âYou explain! How can I end up here if you didnât bring me?â
Sujinâs raised foot, about to kick Seojun, slowly lowered. She was suddenly hit with the memory of last night. Drunkenly trying to enter the code to her door as Seojun whined about missing Jukyung, stumbling into her apartment and dragging Seojun by his collar to the couch, falling on top of him as he fell and then immediately picking herself up and going into her room to pass out.
Seojun put his hands on his hips defiantly, âKang Sujin. We got drunk last night didnât we? Aish, chincha. I never thought youâd be the kind of girl to take advantage of a guy like that.â
âAh-ni-godun! That would never happen! I only brought you here because you wouldnât tell me your address.â
âAh, what a nice excuse. And whose idea was it to go drinking any way? Was this your plan all along? Of course, its understandable that youâd want a rebound with the most handsome guy around.â
Sujin scoffed in disbelief. âThatâs not the case!â She protested. âAnd what handsome? I find you laughable.â
âAnd I find you detestable.â
âThen why did you come into my bedroom when I left you out on the couch?â
A flash of memory sparked in Seojunâs mind; of getting up, using Sujinâs bathroom and going into the bedroom thinking he was at Chorongâs place.
The red spreading on his cheeks was a dead giveaway to Sujin that she had him.
Seojun cleared his throat, âNo matter what, this isnât what it looks like.â
âOf course, it doesnât.â
They stood there awkwardly for a moment as they wondered what to do next. They both spoke together.
âYou should probably go.â
âI should leave.â
A rare agreement. They both nodded in sync.
âBut⌠is there a back door to your apartment? I can risk having my face seen leaving a girlâs apartment.â
Sujin licked her lips as she considered this. âI think I have an idea.â
From the outside, Kang Sujinâs apartment door cracked open, just enough for two heads to poke out to check if the coast was clear. One of those heads was wearing a beanie, a mask and sunglasses. The other was Sujin. They both sneaked out of her apartment and beelined for the emergency stairs.
âWhy is your apartment so up high?â
âWe can always go in the elevator where my neighbors can see you.â
âI hate you.â
Finally making it out the back exit, the two relaxed.
âHow are you going to get home?â She asked him.
âIâll take the bus. Nobody will recognize me when Iâm like this.â
âYou shouldnât underestimate fangirls.â
Seojun chuckled, âNever do. Bye then.â
Seojun turned, then paused, then turned back. âKang Sujin.â He called out to her just as she was about to go in. âThanks⌠for not just abandoning me last night.â It was the most difficult thank-you he had ever said.
Sujin simply nodded. âGet home safely.â
 vii.
Sujin didnât remember going back up to her apartment, just the click of the door shutting behind her that pulled her out of her daze.
She had just spent the night with Han Seojun. Admittedly, it meant nothing, but it still felt weird and she didnât know what to do about it.
Maybe I should have asked him to eat before he went. He must have been hungry. She thought. And then scolded herself, Ah-nee, why would I care about him? He doesnât matter to me anyway.
Traces of Han Seojun still lingered in her apartment; the bedsheet that had fallen on the floor, along with the pillow she had assaulted him with, his spicy scent on the bed and a metal ring on her bedside table that he must have taken off during the night.
Sujin held up the ring, looking through it. She would give it to him later, if they met again. She hoped they didnât. She was already dreading the thought of encountering him again.
Kang Sujin didnât let herself think too much about last night. She changed her sheets, showered and firmly put all thoughts of a certain idol out of her mind. He was just a silly twerp who had been a thug in high school and was now just an idol. He had nothing to do with her, nor she with him.
She had better things to do, like her work.
If youâre going to pretend to be all reformed then you shouldnât make it too obvious. Charity work is a little too on the nose, donât you think?
Nope, she wasnât going to let that idiot get to her. Who was he to treat her like this? Next time she saw him, she would kick him in the face. Yes, thatâs what she would do.
I keep hearing that youâve changed. But have you really? Can you honestly tell me that youâre over him?
All day long Sujinâs hand twitched with the need to be scrubbed clean. They kept getting clammy and sticky. She wanted to scrub, scurb, scurb them of all the dirt and the grime and the filth of her past self. Sujin had believed that she had kicked this bad habit of unnecessarily cleaning her hands, but apparently she hadnât.
My problem with you isnât because of old grudges. I just canât trust you, Kang Sujin. I believe you still will hurt Jukyung, even if you donât mean to.
âWell who the hell wants your trust?â Sujin argued with the wind.
âIs everything okay?â One of the girls she worked with asked.
âWhat? Oh-um-yeah. Everything is fine! Just⌠talking to myself.â She put on a fake cheery attitude and shook her head.
It was only when Sujinâs day was finally over, and she was back in her empty apartment, leaning against her front door, that let herself feel the misery she had been suppressing.
Of course that Han Seojun hates me. What reason does he have not to?
Even the person who had been obligated to love and protect her, had only ever seen her as worthless. If her own father, couldnât treat her with decency, then why should she expect a stranger to?
Her small apartment suddenly seemed so much bigger now. Big and empty, with shadows extending from the ground to the roof.
Kang Sujin, were you always such a piece of trash?
She hadnât answered him back then. But in these quiet moments, she allowed herself to admit, âYes, Han Seojun. I was always such a worthless piece of trash.â
Back when she had been a kidârunning away from her problems in school, from what she had done to Jukyungâshe would let this darkness take over. It would eat her inside and out till she was just a shell. However, now that he had grown up, she had learned how to deal with this on her own.
Sujin pushed herself off of the door and walked into her room, turning on all of the lights. Rest, she needed rest. And food, before anything else. Most of the time her depression would just be weakness caused by hunger. She was indeed careless with her health.
Her phone buzzed suddenly. It was a message from Jukyung. She would respond later. First she would spend time on herself. But then, almost immediately, there was a message from Suah. Then Suho. Even Taehoon. Then the phone lit up with a call from Jukyung.
âWhatâs going oââ
âKang Sujin, have you seen the articles?â
âWhat?â
âThereâs articles about you and Seojun dating.â
âWHAT?â It took Sujin a full minute to process what Jukyung was saying. She was speaking but Sujin didnât hear the rest. Jukyungâs voice was muted from the speaker as Sujin searched through Naver for her and Seojunâs name.
âItâs all over the internet.â Jukyung was saying. âSomeoneâs posted pictures of you and Seojun together. Sujin-ah. Is that really you? Are you and Seojun dating?â
The room began to spin and Sujin had the urge to kick someone in the face.
âJukyung-ah. Iâll call you back.â
What the hell happened?â
The articles Sujin found showed her and Seojun exiting her building. It was from this morning. Seojunâs face was well hidden but she could be clearly seen. From the way the pictures were taken, it looked as if the two were involved in something together.
Sujinâs phone suddenly lit up with an unknown number. She knew it could only be Han Seojun.
She pressed answer.

PART 2
i.
They both spoke at the same time.
âYa Kang SujinâŚâ
âYa Han SeojunâŚâ
âWhat the hell happened?â
Seojun had been in a strange state of mind all day. First it was waking up in the enemyâs bed, but that part he had completely blocked out. Then it was the massive hangover, the effects of which he was still reeling from. On top of that he had received a scolding for being late to practice, which caused him to be late to his commercial shoot, which caused him to be late for his recording session which was when he had been informed about his scandal.
Seojun normally didnât care for rumors that spread about him. He relied on his performance to speak for itself; the people online with their uninformed opinions didnât matter.
âBut why did it have to be her?!â He had groaned when he first read the articles. But then he asked himself seriously, âWhy did it have to be her?â
It all seemed too convenient. Additionally, she had been the one to drag him for drinks and then back to her apartment.
Was this another one of her schemes? What would she gain from doing this? Maybe it was because he was on to her and could see the truth about her and now she wanted him gone. Yes, it must have been that. Or was it not? Was his theory too farfetched? Maybe he was being too harsh. Maybe he was misunderstanding the situation.
Seojun felt conflicted. On the one hand, it would have been so easy to just blame Sujin and keep on hating her like he wanted to. On the other hand, he could hear Suho in his head, warning him about being too judgmental. Seojun normally trusted his instincts with everything but this time his own instincts were confused. Should be giving Sujin the benefit of the doubt?Â
Seojun knew that if he needed answers, he would need to go to the source.
âWhat the hell happened?â They both asked each other at the same time but neither had the answer.
âHow the hell would I know? It was your apartment.â
âThe pictures were obviously taken by someone was obsessed with you.â Sujin fumed.
âAre you saying this is my fault?â
âThen are you saying itâs mine?â
âIâm not the one who took us out drinking then brought me back home to her apartment!â
âIâm not the one with the crazy saesangs!â
âMy fans are not crazy! They are way better than arrogant women with a princess complex like you!â
âDonât call me princess.â Sujin said dangerously.
âOr what? Youâll get me drunk and back at your apartment again?â
âAh shut up, you man-child!â Sujin hung up and Seojun flung his phone across the room where it bounced onto the couch. He was seething.
âAish!â Seojun kicked the air.
âDid you talk to Sujin?â Heekyungâs calm voice startled Seojun.
âWhat? Oh, Noona.â Seojun gulped.
âHow was she? Was she okay?â
âUmmâŚâ Seojun blinked
âShe must have been shaken. Facing something like this can be very upsetting.â
Seojunâs shoulders deflated. âUh, yeahâŚâ He hadnât considered that.
âDid she agree to give a statement to help clear up this mess?â
Oh right, I was supposed to ask herâŚ
Heekyung continued, âI do have good news. Weâve found the person who took the photographs. So he wonât be sharing them with anyone else.â
âYou have?â
âYes. It was unfortunate. A photographer happened to be there, just as you were leaving. He actually recognized you from your voice. Talk about having bad luck.â
Seojun frowned. So, it wasnât Sujin.
âSo will Sujin do it? We just need a simple statement. She can release a post on her socials and weâll take care of the media articles.â
Seojun rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. âUm, I donât think sheâll agree.â . Especially not after the blaming match that just happened. âCanât we just clarify things on our end? Not get her involved?â
Heekyung smiled with a twinkle in her eye, âOh I get it. You donât want her to feel burdened.â
Seojun could tell what she was implying. âAh-nee! Its not that at all!â His voice was pitched a little too high.
Heekyung laughed, âIâve been at this for longer than you, Seojun-ah. You can be straight with me.â
âItâs not like that! I donât care about Kang Sujin at all!â
But Heekyung wasnât listening. âJust be careful. Your career has just started. You canât afford scandals like these. People will turn against you in an instant, you know?â
Seojun swallowed. He knew all too well how people could turn against him in an instant, like the way thy did with Seyeon. But he wanted to believe that he would be able to face them.
âDonât worry. Iâll be careful.â
Heekyung nodded. âGood. Now Iâll go tell our PR team to release a statement about you and Sujin being just friends.â Seojun nodded gratefully. âI think the fact that you went to school together will help. Hopefully people will buy it when you tell them nothing happened between you two.â Heekyung winked as she walked away.
âItâs not like that!â Seojun called after her.
ii.
The situation subsided as quickly as it had risen. Move Entertainment published their official statement about how it was all a misunderstanding. That Seojun had only been visiting his friend from high school and the fact that the friend was also a mutual with rising online beauty guru Lim Jukyung helped establish the connection. Seojun had been glad that Jukyung had taken those selfies with Sujin with Seojun in the background otherwise people might have just taken the statement as an excuse.
What annoyed Seojun about the whole situation was not his reputation or the online speculation but how everyone else kept teasing him about it. This was made especially worse when they were all gathered around for drinks, including his own squad, Chorong and Co., who were eyeing Sujin with a mixture of adorationâthat made them stare at her, and fearâthat kept them from talking to her.
âOoh, Han Seojun you better not drink too much or youâll end up in Sujinâs apartment again.â Taehoon teased. Seojun gave him the death glare while Sujin made a disgusted face. Everyone else laughed.
âGuys! Donât be mean.â Jukyungâs voice went unheard among the collective chatter.
âHan Seojun, I can see youâve been keeping a very close eye on Kang Sujin.â Chorong whispered in his ear. Seojun elbowed his ribs.
âPay up, Sujin didnât kill him.â Suho asked from Suah.
âYou guys had a bet?â Sujin asked icily. Seojun almost admired the scathing look Sujin gave Suho as she eyed the money being exchanged.
Suhoâs and Suahâs hands froze right when they were exchanging the bills.
âNo?â Suho said weakly.
âKang Su, I bet on you okay?â Suah defended.
âAh is that so? Well then youâre off the hook.â
Suah relaxed while Suho blinked forty times, sweating. âKang Sujin. It was just a joke okay?â
Sujin just put her hand forward and Suho silently put the money in her hands.
âWah, just 5 dollars? Iâm worth 5 million you know.â
âSure you are. And Iâm the King of England.â Seojun said under his breath. Kang Sujin and her princess complex.
âWhat was that?â Sujin put her hand to her ear, âIâm sorry. I couldnât hear you over the apology you owe me.â
âWhat apology? I owe you nothing.â Seojun retorted, fully aware that he had actually come to this gathering to apologize to Sujin about the scandal and how he had behaved over the phone. That plan had since been abandoned.Â
For some reason, he could not spit out the three words âI am sorryâ to Kang Sujin. No matter how much he wanted to. There was just something about her that irritated him to the point of misbehavior.
Sujin clicked her tongue at Seojun but said nothing. Instead, reaching into her bag, she pulled out a notebook and a pen.
âHere, sign this.â She ordered, pushing the notebook and pen in his face.
âWhat is it?â
For Kang Sujin, the biggest issue from the scandal had not been the online noteriety and not even the teasing, but the fact that everyone in her office now knew that she was friends with an idol and had demanded that she get them his autographs.
âIts for my friends at work.â
âYou have friends?â Seojun said with mock surprise.
âYou know I was just as shocked to learn that you have actual fans. I always thought Suho was the one buying all your albums.â Sujin said.
âOf course I have fans! I am super popular you know!â Seojun defended, pulling the lapels of his jacket with pride.
âYes Iâm sure youâre veeeery popular.â Sujinâs words dripped with sarcasm. Seojunâs pride deflated like a balloon. âJust sign. And write something nice too.â She ordered. Seojun quietly picked up the notebook, not because he was nice but because he felt he owed her this much.
âYou know my autographs are worth a lot of money, right?â
Sujin made a face. âJust sign the damn thing so that the girls at work stop harassing me about you.â
Seojun smiled as he signed. His fans were awesome. âHow many?â He asked.
âSeven.â
He signed seven pages, each with a personalized note.
âBe nice to my fans at work.â
âIâm always nice.â
âSure you are.â Seojun replied skeptically. He handed Sujin the notebook. âI better not find you selling these online.â He warned.
âIâd rather starve than live off of your autographs.â Sujin bit back.
âOkay, okay! No more fighting!â Jukyung pointed between the two. âLets all enjoy our drinks in peace.â She looked pointedly at Sujin who pointed her chin at Seojun with a âhe-started-itâ scowl.
âHan Seo, is it okay for you to meet us in public like this?â Suah asked. They werenât in the usual private dining area that they frequented when it was just the core group of friends. They were out where everyone could see.
âWe can always hang out at our place, if you want.â Suho offered. Seojun quickly shook his head. Seeing Suho and Jukyung together outside was one thing. Seeing how they lived together was quite another. Knowing they lived together was painful enough. He didnât want even more fuel for his imagination.
âIts no trouble at all.â He put on a smile for Suho who seemed satisfied. But, to his surprise, he found Kang Sujin giving him a strange look. She chuckled to herself but said nothing.
As they all said their goodbyes, Seojun went out the back so that he could leave in privacy. He planned on taking the long route today. A bike ride would help him clear his mind.
âHan Seojun, wait up!â
He stopped just as he was about to put his helmet on. He was surprised to find Sujin there.Â
âWhat? Need more autographs?â He asked, cockily smiling.
Sujin made a sickened expression. âNot at all. I just⌠I had something to say.â She hesitated.
âWell say it.â
She cleared her throat. âIt was neither of our faults. The scandal. It wasnât that it was my building or your fans. It was someone shitty who didnât respect our privacy. Thatâs⌠thatâs all I wanted to say.â
Sujin waited for his response. Seojun could feel his face burning. He should have been the one to say all this to her, and yet here she was apologizing to him instead.
âIâmsorryforwhathappened.â He said too quickly and too quietly.
âWhat?â
âNothing!â Seojun shoved his helmet on to hide his embarrassed face.Â
âDrive safe.â Sujin said.
âYeah, whatever.â He rode away.
Kang Sujin was just glad she was able to spit out the words she had been meaning to say all night long. It had been weighing on her ever since they had spoken on the phone. She had promised herself a long time ago that she would try to be a nicer person and for the most part she had accomplished that. But that Han Seojun just had a way of bringing her old self back to the surface. And that bothered her.
It doesnât matter, she told herself. She would learn how to get along with Han Seojun. It was only a matter of practice. And besides, it wasnât as if she had to be overtly obvious about it. She just had to tolerate him.
For Jukyung. Itâs for Jukyung. She would want us to get along, she lied to herself. The truth was, that Kang Sujin believed that she didnât have a choice.
Everyone loved Han Seojun, even her best friends who had never paid much attention to him back in high school. It was all because Sujin had been absent for so long. She had missed a huge part of everyoneâs lives while Han Seojun had been there for all of it.
Sujin wondered whether, if it came to choosing between her and Seojun, they would choose her. A part of her believed they wouldnât.
She had made such a mess of things before and left things unresolved for too long. She was certain that things would never go back to the way they had been, not fully anyway. There would always be a part of them that wouldnât trust her. And there would always be a part of her that would be heavy with guilt. Â
âAh-nee-ya.â She reassured herself. âI donât need to worry about this.â
She was glad that the whole matter of being mistaken as Han Seojunâs girlfriend had been settled. She laughed at the very idea.
âMe and Han Seojun dating. Ah, how funny.â
Sujin had heard of horror stories about how such scandals ruined peopleâs lives and got them shunned by society. Thank fully, none of that had happened. Her precious peace was safe again.
Sujin could see her future now; a life where she worked hard at her non-profit, where she shared dinners and lunches with her friends and laughed about the old days, where she wasnât told she wasnât good enough, where she did what she wanted instead of being forced to do what her father wanted. Yes, Kang Sujin could see her like aheadâa life where she was finally happy.
iii.
At first Sujin thought she was being paranoid. But her co-workers seemed to be acting stand-offish with her, with some outright avoiding her. They werenât replying to her as enthusiastically they used to and were having hushed conversations that immediately stopped when she approached them. They even made plans for lunch without including her.
âIs something wrong?â Sujin asked one of them.
âNot at all. Shall we get to work?â It sounded more like a snub than reassurance.
Sujin also felt the hairs on her neck rise from time to time, as if she could feel someone watching her. But when she turned around, everyone would look away.
Convincing herself that it was all in her head, Sujin ignored it and went on with her work.
But then it happened again at the convenience store. She heard her name being said in whispers behind her. When she turned, she found a couple of teenagers quickly putting away their phone. Despite the anxiety bubbling in her stomach, Sujin dismissed the incident and went home.
Normally after a long day at work, Sujin would throw her phone away, have dinner while watching TV, shower and go to sleep. But today had been strange and she was feeling out of sorts. She needed a distraction to help her calm down.
So, after a shower, she settled back on her couch with her dinner and her phone. Jukyung normally posted a new make-up tutorial by this day of the week. Sujin loved watching her transform herself from an ordinary looking girl to a stunning beauty, while explaining each step.
To Kang Sujin, Jukyung was an artist who used her face as a canvas. Sujin herself had learned a lot just from watching Jukyung. She was excited about what she would learn today.
Sujin dismissed the dozens of Instagram notifications on her phone. Suah was always tagging her and messaging her about some post or the other. Sujin would get to them later. As Sujin searched for Jukyungâs channel, her Instagram notifications kept dinging. She put it on mute and played the video.
This time, Jukyung was giving a tutorial on American style makeup and how it was different from Korean style. Sujin grinned all the way through the video as Jukyung talked through her tutorial. Sujin scrolled through the comments as she watched.
My beauty Queen! I love you!
I tried your winged liner look and was able to finally do it for myself. Thank you.
I use the exact same foundation but it doesnât work for my skin. But looks great on you. <3
You didnât mention the eyeliner you used here. Can you please add it in the description?
This is why I have trust issues. She looks like a completely different person. This is fraud.
Sujin frowned at the last comment. âShe looks beautiful either way.â She said angrily aloud as she typed it in, punching the buttons as if she could punch the commentor. Sujin scrolled further.
Who else came here after reading the Soompi article?
This comment had a lot of likes and comments. Maybe Jukyung was getting famous enough to be reported by entertainment websites now. Sujin smiled proudly.
Lim Jukyung, yours is the best makeup channel here!
Saranghae unnie
I was so sad to learn that you were bullied as a kid. So glad that youâve found success now.
Sujin swallowed thickly. It would always bother her to know that she had once exploited Jukyungâs past bullying for her own gain. The fact that she had once contributed to her bullying would always fuel Sujinâs self hatred. She was just glad that Jukyung had moved on from her past and had become confident in herself. And more so, had found a community online that adored her.
As Sujin scrolled down some more, she noticed that most of the comments were talking about how Jukyung was a survivor of bullying.
âMwo-yaâŚâ
Wow, I had no idea this girl was so brave. Bravo!!!
Iâm a survivor of bullying too. Its nice to know Iâm not alone.
I bet her bully is watching this now and regretting what they did.
I donât watch makeup tutorials. Came here cuz of the bullying scandal. But stayed cuz she is so good.
The last comment made Sujin stop. âBullying scandal?â
Sujin went to Naver and searched for scandals involving Lim Jukyung. The first few links were Jukyungâs most popular videos but beneath that were a slew of articles from slanderous gossip sites.
Girl from Han Seojun Scandal Turns Out to be a Bully
Online Star Lim Jukyung Gets Involved in Han Seojun Scandal
Han Seojunâs Alleged Girlfriend was a Bully in High School
âWhat?!â Sujin stood up on her feet in shock. With shaking hands, she went through the articles one by one. Somehow, someone had uncovered the post from her high school community page that had revealed what she had done to Jukyung. Except they had gotten their facts mixed up and had reported that Sujin had been the one to bully Lim Jukyung about her looks.
That girl is so despicable.
Han Seojun is hanging out with a girl like her? I canât believe it. I actually used to like him.
I bet this girl seduced Oppa. Donât dislike him!
I am so glad theyâre not actually dating.
Her face is so evil. And sheâs uglier than Lim Jukyung!
I bet Han Seojun was fooled by her. She feels like the type who uses her looks to manipulate men.
People like her should kill themselves.
Guys! I found her Inssa!
It really is her! This is authentic!
The room began to close in on Sujin. She immediately opened Instagram where her account was flooded with comments and direct messages from people either telling her to kill herself or threatening to kill her.
Her heart was beating so fast it felt like she would throw it up. She was equal parts shaken and angry. So many people were after her but she hated that these people felt they had a right to treat her this way.
Sujin opened up the messages on Instagram and began firing back to her haters, starting with the most recent messages.
Get off of my account before I report you.
No thanks, Iâm not going to kill myself.
Threatening me will only get you sued.
You donât have to follow me if you donât like me.
âThese assholes think they can bully me online? Well, theyâve got another thing coming.â Sujin growled through clenched teeth as she typed away with all her anger.
I did not bully her!
I made a mistake!
I apologized!
People immediately started responding.
Youâre not even going to admit your mistake?
OMG! I canât believe you actually replied!
Are you honestly defending what you did?
You canât talk like that to me! Iâm going to tell everyone youâre a total b****
How can you be so audacious after you bullied someone? Just kill yourself.
Do us all a favor and kill yourself.
Kill yourself.
KILL YOURSELF.
Sujin screamed in frustration and threw her phone away. It smashed into the wall and landed with a sickening thud. Her hands suddenly felt clammy. Clammy and sticky and sweaty and dirty, dirty, dirty. So dirty that they smelled.
She ran into the bathroom and furiously scrubbed her hands clean. Once, twice, three times. No matter how many times she washed or how hard she scrubbed, the dirty stench of the hate she had just received wouldnât wash off.
Her hands became all red and felt raw and exposed. But she kept on washing till she ran out of soap. She fell to the floor, suddenly weak and exhausted. The cool tiles felt nice and it was then that she noticed how hot she felt.
Calm down. I have to calm down. She breathed in, then out. In, then out. She could hear her heart in her ears. Pounding and pounding. The walls were closing in. The messages on her Instagram suddenly had voices that shouted in her mind.
Kill yourself, kill yourself, kill yourself.
A ringing broke through it all. First Sujin thought it was in her head but no, it was from the living room.
Her cellphone. Lim Jukyung was calling.
How could she face Jukyung? What would she say to her? Wouldnât Jukyung say the same as everyone else?
Sujin cut the call. Notifications from Instagram were still coming in. She deactivated her account and deleted the app.
Lim Jukyungâs name lit up her phone again.
She turned it off and flopped down on her sofa, head pounding.
Her fragile little hope for a good life was now shattered completely. She could hear her father now. Hear him yell at her that she was useless, that she was pathetic, that she was stupid and inferior. Unable to beat even Lee Suho.
Kill yourself.
Her father had never told her this, but he might as well have. Even now it was his voice saying it over and over in her mind. It was his angry stare she felt on her back.
How would she face people now? People would hate her now that they knew what she had done. And her co-workersâŚ. Of course they knew. Thatâs why everyone had been acting so strange.
This all felt so cruel and unfair. She had been so good these past couple of years. She didnât want all of it to just be taken away like this.
But didnât you do the same thing to Jukyung? Her fatherâs voice taunted. She was a good person too, wasnât she? Youâre nothing but a piece of trash.
I bet you think that you destroyed Lim Jukyung, Seojunâs voice said, but youâve only destroyed yourself.
iv.
SUMMARY of iii: Because of the Han Seojun scandal, people find out about the community post that revealed what Sujin had done to Jukyung and people online start thinking that Sujin bullied Jukyung. They harrass her and it becomes a scandal of its own.
It was chaos at Move Entertainment.
âWhat the hell happened?! You told me you settled this!â The director threw a magazine in Heekyungâs face. Seojun saw this through the glass door and barged in.
âIs that how you treat your employees?â He demanded angrily.
âGet out. Get. Him. Out! Get him out of this company for good measure!â
Heekyung pushed Seojun out before he could do anything else, dragging him as far away as possible. âDonât be an idiot. You canât just barge in like that.â
âBut heâs being an asshole. Should I just stand around and let you take it?â
âThis is the adult world Han Seojun. Actions have consequences here.â Heekyung said reasonably. âAnd youâre the reason heâs so mad. A bullying scandal is serious. Weâve even publicly acknowledged that you and Sujin are friends. This doesnât reflect well on you.â
âThe articles are lying. Sujin didnât bully Jukyung in high school. She justââ
âI know exactly what she did. You think I donât know about what happened to my own sister?â For a brief moment, Heekyungâs professional demeanor slipped into anger. But she recovered quickly. âIt infuriates me that my sisterâs past is being brought up like this. But I have a job to do and I need you to cooperate with me. Okay?â
Seojun exhaled. âWhat are we going to do?â
âNothing. The situation will sort itself out. You will need to keep a low profile, however.â
Seojun exhaled. âNoona, we need to set the record straight. Sujin isââ
âSujin isnât represented by Move, you are. None of us here can do anything about what is happening to her.â
Seojun clenched his jaw. âHave you seen what is being said about her?â
Heekyung looked away. âIts not like I enjoy saying this. Iâm only telling you what I was told when I made the same request. Sheâs not represented by us. Sheâs not our concern.â
âWas Seyeon not your concern either?â
Heekyung had nothing to say to that. âI have to go back in. You stay here, arachi? Donât do anything rash andâŚâ she yanked Seojunâs phone from his hand.
âAh!â Seojun tried to get it but Heekyung had the phone out of reach.
âIâm keeping this for now.â She said and left.
Seojun exclaimed in frustration, running his hands through his hair. Despite the animosity he had towards Kang Sujin, this kind of exposure to such vitriol online didnât sit well with him. Kang Sujin deserved a lot of things, but she didnât deserve this.
He knew Sujin was tough. But this kind of incident would make anyone crumble. He just hoped she didnât do anything stupid.
v.
âSujin-ah. Can you explain your side of things?â
Of course her office had heard about everything. Apparently her past misdeeds were a trending topic online. Her supervisor had called her in as soon as Sujin had shown up.
âCan you tell me what happened?â Her supervisor asked.
Sujin inhaled, âWhen I was in high school, I fell in love with a boy. But he had a girlfriend⌠she was a friend of mine. I got jealous⌠and petty. I published an unflattering video of her on our schoolâs online community. She had been bullied in her previous school because of her looks. So the video was especially traumatizing to her. I was responsible for what happened in Saebom High, but I wasnât involved in anything that happened before that.â
Sujin looked at her hands, still red and raw, âI have made up with her since then. Iâve apologized. Weâre both friends now. And Iâm not a teenager anymore.â
Something stung Sujinâs hand. Water droplets? No, tears. She hadnât noticed when she had started crying. But she kept her face straight even when the tears didnât stop. She looked at her supervisor.
âI am ashamed of what I did. If I could take it all back⌠you have no idea what I would do to take it all back.â Sujin furiously wiped away her tears. She hated crying in front of anyone. âI love working here. I really do.â
Even as she was saying the words, she knew what was coming. Of course her company wouldnât keep her on. Even non-profits couldnât afford bad reputations and the fact that Move Entertainment had worked with her company for a lot of benefits hadnât escaped her notice either.
âSujin-ah.â Her co-worker said, peeking from the cubicle wall as Sujin packed up her things.
âWhat?â
âI never thanked you. For getting me Han Seojunâs signature.â The woman said meekly.
Sujin gave a small smile. âYouâre welcome.â
The woman handed her a bunch of sticky notes. âThese are goodbyes from everyone. We know youâre not getting a farewell party so we thought you should have our thoughts with you.â
Sujin looked down at the brightly colored notes that contained encouraging messages from some of her co-workers. Her dismissal had been so swift that she hadnât even been given the chance to say anything.
âIf its worth anything⌠I donât believe any of it.â
Sujin smiled gratefully this time. âThanks, Chulhee-yah. I appreciate it.â
vi.
Sujin was both grateful and surprised by how much her friends had reached out. Apparently they had showed up to her place multiple times to see if she was okay, given that she was not answering any of her calls. Sadly, Sujin had not been there to receive them. She had gone to her auntâs place to get away from everything.
That had not proved to be a good idea.
âHave. You. Lost. Your. Mind!!â Each word was punctuated with a smack from a slipper. Her mother, the once elegant and graceful Mrs. Kang, chased her daughter around in the most inelegant and ungraceful manner. Mrs. Kangâs sister tried to save Sujin by stepping in between but Mrs. Kang still managed to get a few whacks in.
âHow could you let a boy stay over at your place?!â
âOmma! Thatâs what you choose to focus on?!â
âYes! How could you have disgraced your family this way? And not just any boy, an idol? What the hell were you doing with an idol? Come here.â
This was one fight Sujin would never win. Her mother was not a force of reason when she was this angry. And it took a lot for her to get this angry.
Sujin didnât mind these smacks. They came from a place of love and worry. Eventually her mother calmed down enough to address the other issue with Sujin. She took her daughter in her arms and wailed.
âHow could those people be so mean to my daughter?â
âOmma, I canât breathe.â Her mother smushed Sujin to herself.
âMy poor girl. My poor baby girl.â
In the end, Sujin was glad she had come back to her auntâs place. It gave her the break she had needed. Away from all of the noise of her online haters, Sujin found she could finally breathe. She found great comfort in her motherâs arms and her auntâs assurances her that everything would be fine.
However, the dread of returning to her normal life still loomed over her head. Sujin felt her throat close up every time she imagined going back to her apartment. Would the people point and laugh at her on the street? Would she be able to live a normal life from now on?
It was strange how deeply all of this had affected her. Even now, as Sujin walked from the grocery store to her auntâs house, she felt the paranoia that people were talking about her, pointing and laughing, even though they werenât.Â
âSujin-ah.â
And now it felt like they were actually calling out to her.
âKang Su!â
Sujin turned in surprise, ready to fight whoever had called her. âWho is it?â
âWho do you think? Itâs Jukyungie! â A human mass known as Lim Jukyung ran towards Kang Sujin with arms wide open. The girls hugged each other tightly, Jukyung grinning with her gummy smile while Sujin stood, mouth open in shock.
Not far behind, were Suah and Taehoon.
âYa Kang Su, at least answer your phone! Do you know how worried I was?â Suah scolded.
Sujin laughed, almost tearing up. She couldnât believe this was happening. She had feared that her friends would turn away and curse at her after she had avoided them. But here they were, all gathered just for her.
âHowâd you find me?â She asked the three. They all turned to Suho who stood there smiling.
âHey Sujin. Have you been well?â
Of course, Suho knew where her aunt lived.
âWhat well? You all know what happened.â Sujin replied, not bothering to pretend that she was fine.
âYa! What have you done to your hands.â Jukyung held up Sujinâs scabby hands with worry.
âItâll heal.â Sujin smiled. Maybe it was the massive hug she had received, or the fact that her friends had traveled so far away to meet her, but suddenly, Sujin felt relieved. It was as if the entire situation was trivial and that she could see light at the end of the tunnel.
âOf course we know what happened.â Suho replied.
âAnd we know exactly how to fix it.â Jukyung grinned wider.
vii.
On the screen, in front of a ring light she had set up at her home, Lim Jukyung stood with a gummy smile and a warm welcome.
âAhn-nyong-se-yo everyone. This is Lim Jukyung here with a new make up tutorial for all of my beautiful viewers. Uh, today I have a new kind of tutorial for you all. But before we begin, there is something that I think has been on all of our minds that needs to be addressed.â
Jukyung motioned to someone standing behind the camera to come forward. Kang Sujin entered the frame awkwardly, not knowing where exactly to look. The way Jukyung had set up her studio for this live event was to have the camera, the mirror with the ring light and her laptop screen facing her so that she could do her make up while also reading the comments. And while Jukyung was used to having all of this equipment focused on her, Sujin was not.
âIntroduce yourself.â Jukyung said softly, nudging Sujin with her elbow.
âAh, yes.â Sujin cleared her throat. âAhn-nyong-se-yo everyone. Iâm Kang Sujin.â She waved robotically while staring in the camera like a deer caught in the headlights.
Jukyung couldnât help but laugh. âYa, Kang Su, are you afraid of the camera?â
âAh-neeeee, itâs just so unnatural.â Sujin quickly countered.
âDonât worry, the camera doesnât bite.â Jukyung put an arm around her friendâs waist. âOkay everyone now that my friend Kang Sujin is here we can talk about the recentââ
âLim Ju, maybe we shouldnât do this.â Sujin interrupted anxiously.
âHuh? But itâs already live.â Jukyung pointed at the camera.
âWhat?â Sujin on in panic.
Jukyung continued, âSo everyone, as you all may have heard, Sujin and I went to the same high school together. However, before that I attended another high school where I was bullied for my looks. Sujin and I did not know each other back then and she had nothing to do with that part of my life so the allegations that she bullied me are completely false. That was another person and that person is no longer in my life.â
Sujin cut in, âHowever, it is true that I revealed Jukyungâs past to our school and posted an unflattering video of her online.â
Jukyung nodded, looking serious. âI wonât lie and say it was easy for me to have that happen. But⌠both of us have changed since then. We have grown up and grown past that time.â
The girls took each otherâs hands in solidarity.
Jukyung continued, âIâm not the girl I used to be. Neither is Sujin. And while she did do something wrong⌠Iâve forgiven her. I would rather remember the good times we sharedâŚâ The time that Sujin caught that pervert, the time she helped rescue Jukyung from those kidnappers, the time she helped hide Jukyungâs bare face at the school trip. âThere are things that I wish I had done differently too. I wish had been more confident in myself and honest about who I really was. I wish I had stood up for myself earlier. But the past is the past, and I would rather focus on the present.â
âEveryone, I am grateful for all of the love and support you showed to me. I know bullying isnât something you get over easily and I saw a lot of you comment about the bullying that you suffered. I am grateful you shared your stories with me. I hope we can take this opportunity to help each other heal rather than put someone down.â Jukyung looked at Sujin. âNow you.â
Sujin recited nervously, âAh. Ahn-nyong-se-yo everyone. Iâm Kang Sujin.â
Jukyung giggled. âWeâve done that already.â
âOh, yes. Um⌠I uhâŚâ Sujin took a pause to collect herself. âLet me be the first to say that Iâm not a nice personââ
âYah!â Jukyung protested but Sujin carried on.
âBut Iâm also not the girl who posted that video about her best friend, not anymore. At that time⌠I was foolish. I let my personal problems cloud my judgement and I took my frustration and anger out on Lim Jukyung. I have regretted doing that every single day since it happened. I am sorry. I understand everyoneâs anger towards me. I would be angry too if I heard this about someone else. However, I hope that you all will be able to forgive me, as Jukyung has.â
Sujin ended her speech with an apologetic bow. Jukyung bowed with her. The girls then shared a tearful hug. From the back, Sujin saw Suho give her a thumbs up. Sujin sent him a smile back. The girls parted, wiping their tears.
âOkay! Now that thatâs out of the way, we can get on to the real reason why you are on here.â Jukyung clasped her hands together. âSujin will be assisting me today.â
âAh, yes.â
âSo Kang Su, shall we bring out our model today?â Jukyung asked her with a mischievous gleam in her eye.
The girls nodded conspiratorially before turning to Suho who looked on, confused.
âWhat? Why are you looking at me like that?â
viii.
âWhat is it? What are you laughing at?â Chorong asked Seojun as he leaned over his shoulder. They were at Chorongâs place where the boys were goofing off, playing video games and lounging about.
Seojun didnât hear Chorongâs inquiry through his ear buds and kept on shaking with silent laughter.
âHey, nobody said anything about me being in the video.â Suho was protesting on Seojunâs phone. Seojun turned up the volume to hear Suhoâs annoyed grumbling more clearly. Of course, Seojun was going to make fun of Suho about this afterwards.Â
âJust sit down, Lee Su, before I get mad.â Sujin commanded.
âThat attitude of yours has never worked on me,â Suho replied coolly.
âCome on, Suho-ya. I do your makeup all the time donât I? Itâll be fine. I promise.â Of course, when Jukyung said this, Suho melted like butter on a hot pan. Sujin rolled her eyes but it was clear that it wasnât out of spite.
âOkay everyone! Letâs begin with the base and then weâll work our way up! I am going to keep this look as natural as possible so that its not modifying anything but merely enhancing his features.â Jukyung pushed Suhoâs bangs out of his forehead with a giant pink bow shaped clip. Seojun was quick to get a screen shot of it.
âWhat are Lee Suho and Kang Sujin doing on Jukyungâs channel?â Chorong asked in Seojunâs ear, shocking him. Seojun almost screamed in fear. He pushed away Chorongâs face to watch the video in peace.
In the live video, Jukyung was explaining the differences of applying make up on a guyâs face, versus a girlâs face.
âSujin-ah. Why donât you read some of the comments while Iâm buffing in his foundation? You have to buff it in for a long time to make it appear natural.â Jukyung told her audience.
Sujin moved towards the camera, blocking Jukyung a little as she read off of her laptop. Her unfiltered face was front and center for the world to see. At this position it looked unflattering, which made Seojun chuckle even more.
Sujin read the comments in a robotic monotone, âJukyung Unnie, I donât usually watch make up tutorials. But after today Iâm your number one fan.â
âMwo-ya, this girl has no camera sense.â Seojun said to himself.
âThank you! Iâm your fan too,â Jukyung replied brightly.
âYour looks are always so classy and stylish.â
âThank you! Iâm glad you liked them. Let me know if there are any other looks youâd like to see.â
âWill you do a tutorial on how to wear red lipstick properly?â
âIâm actually planning on doing that soon!â
âLim Jukyung, you are so beautiful. Marry me please!â
Suho got up to see the screen, âWho asked that?â
âSit down!â Jukyung pulled him back as he grumbled. âSorry,â Jukyung said to the camera, âbut Iâm taken.â
âAre you and Kang Sujin really friends now?â Sujin turned to Jukyung and all Seojun could see was her shiny black hair on screen.
âDangyunhaji! In fact, if I wasnât dating Suho, Kang Sujin would be my boyfriend.â
Seojun scoffed, âAs if. It would have been me.â
On the live, Sujin laughed, âIs that so? We can still be together though. Have an affair behind Suhoâs back.â
âSure.â Jukyung said casually.
âYah!â Suho protested.
Both girls giggled.
Suho looked miffed, âKang Sujin, youâre blocking the view.â He said peevishly.
âOh sorry. Iâll move.â Sujin circled around the couple to stand behind Jukyung and read the comments over her shoulder.
Jukyung read something on the screen and pointed it to Sujin, âRead that one.â
Sujin hesitantly read, âKang Sujin, Iâm sorry for judging you.â She looked up, âItâs okay. I can be harsh in my judgements too. The key is to try to learn from your past.â Sujin smiled at the camera before turning back to the screen.
âKang Sujin, youâre pretty.â Sujin recited in her monotone voice. âYes. I know.â She said without looking up.
âShe is also super smart!â Jukyung gushed. âShe was one of the top students in class.â
âCould never beat me though.â Suho said smugly, still sore about the affair comment. Both girls turned to Suho and stared. His mouth became small. âSorry.â
Jukyung went back to explaining her tutorial, slowly performing each step as Suho patiently sat. She made his eyes look bigger and applied a natural lip tint to finish off.
Both girls couldnât help but gawk at how good Suho look by the end. Jukyung removed the pink blow clip from his hair in a daze.
âHow do I look?â He asked Jukyung.
âToo good, Lee Suho.â Sujin clapped. âToo good.â
Jukyung blushed but couldnât articulate her thoughts. She stuttered, âUh-ah! Letâs look at the c-c-comments again!â
Suho grinned.
âLim Jukyung, you were amazing as always!â Sujin read aloud.
âThank you.â Jukyung bowed.
âWatch the latest and best movies for free atââ
âSujin thatâs just spam.â
âOh. Right.â Sujin continued, âLee Suho looks prettier than the both of you.â
The girlsâ face fell flat. Suho just looked innocently at the camera. The girls cleared their throats.
âAh thatâs all the time we have!â
âAh, yes! Time to move on!â
The two pushed Suho out of the frame together.
âI can still be on camera if youââ
âNo, I think the people have seen enough of you.â Sujin said while smiling widely at the camera.
Jukyung went wide eyed when she looked into her computer screen. âYa! This live got 3.3 thousand comments!â
âDaebak. Good job Lim Ju!â The girls grinned, but then Sujin squinted her eyes disapprovingly at something on the screen. âLim Jukyung, you look so ugly without makeup? Ya, who wrote this comment? User name KimChee23? Why donât you show yourself to me and then we can see whoâs really ugly?â
âSujin-ah. Itâs just a comment.â Jukyung tried to calm her.
âComments matter too! Otherwise people wouldnât be writing them! Ya KimChee23 where do you live?â
Seojun laughed out loud as he saw Jukyung try to calm Sujin down on screen.
âSo, is everything all settled now?â Chorong asked Seojun.
âI think, yes. Just look at all the comments praising Sujin.â
He was right, the comments section was flooded with statements of Sujin being a brave person for apologizing and changing her bad behavior.Â
âGreat.â Chorong shook his friendâs shoulders. âNow you donât have to be so troubled about Lim Jukyung.â
âLim Jukyung? Why would I be troubled about her?â
Chorong was confused. He had not known about the scandal. The matter Chorong had been referring to was Seojunâs theory that Kang was apparently still after Lee Suho.
âI mean... havenât you been in a bad mood all week because of her?â
âWhy bother asking Chorong?â One of the boys said, âYou know the answer to all of Seojunâs heartaches is Lim Jukyung.â
Seojun didnât bother responding. He returned to his phone screen where Jukyung and Kang Sujin were wrapping up the live, waving at the camera with wide smiles. Suho was trying to get back in the frame and Sujin kept pushing his out of it.
âOoh. Look at how Han Seojun is smiling.â
âSomething good must have happened.â
âSee! Heâs always thinking of Lim Jukyung.â
âNo Iâm not!â Seojun protested. Quietly, he admitted. âI wasnât thinking of Lim Jukyung.â
ix.
Han Seojun had arrived at Kang Sujinâs building an hour ago, but for the life of him he could not muster the courage to go up to her apartment.
âI have no reason to see her. So, why should I?â He argued with himself. He paced back and forth, going up the entrance and then going back again, unable to enter.
In his hands, Han Seojun held a beautiful arrangement of white tulips and yellow roses. White tulips as an apology and yellow roses as an offering of friendship. It was his way of apologizing for being a jerk.
After hearing everything she had said on the live event, Seojun had no doubt that Kang Sujin wasnât who he thought she was. Certainly, if Jukyung and even Suho could trust her, then he could at least give her the benefit of the doubt.Â
It had felt like a good idea at the time to try to make amends with flowers. But now that he was actually here, at her home, he felt stupid.
What would Kang Sujin say when he showed up at her place? Would she laugh at him and tell him to go to hell? Would she be offended that he just showed up, unannounced? The uncertainly of it all made him anxious.
As he went back down the steps to the building entrance for the thousandth time, Seojun bumped into a lady.
âOh maâam. Iâm so sorry!â
The woman had been carrying tote bags with plastic containers of food in them. The bags had fallen to the ground but luckily, the containers and the food inside them were unharmed, just a little shaken.
Seojun looked at the woman with an apologetic face. She appeared to be a very dignified lady, as old as his mother. Her hair was up in a chic bun and she wore well fitted, albeit a little worn out, clothes. Her brows were crinkled in disapproval. But upon seeing Seojun, her face softened.
âAre you okay, maâam?â Seojun asked and his humble words spoken in that rich baritone subsided the womanâs irritation further to the point where she smiled.
âOmo, how can someone be so handsome?â
Seojun beamed. Elders had always loved him. âAh, thank you.â He responded shyly. âLet me help you carry these.â He took the heavy bags from her, putting the flowers under his arm, careful not to smush them.
âOh no. I donât want to bother.â
âItâs no bother at all, maâam. I insist.â He didnât let the woman say another word, walking past her into the building. The woman smiled and followed.
âAre you going to visit your girlfriend?â The woman asked, eyeing the flowers.
âA friend. A friend who is a girl.â
âIs that what the youngsters are calling it these days?â
âAh-nee-heyo. Itâs not like that.â
The woman just smiled knowingly. âIâm going to visit a special girl too. My daughter lives in this building.â
They entered the elevator. Seojun asked which floor the woman wanted to go to. âOh, Iâm going to the same floor. Maybe my friend knows your daughter.â
âIâm sure she does. My daughter is a wonderful girl.â
When the lady walked in the same direction as Sujinâs apartment, Seojun said, âOh. My friend lives this way too. What a coincidence. They might live right next to each other.â
âThen you should come over with your friend. I will cook for you.â
And when the woman stood in front of Sujinâs apartment, Seojun said, âOh, this is my friendâs apartment. Are they roommates?â
âYoung man, is your friendâs name Kang Sujin?â
âYes, maâam. How did you know?â Seojun asked, surprised.
The lady patted Seojunâs face, âAt least you have good looks.â She punched in Sujinâs passcode and went in. Han Seojun stood outside for a full minute before he connected the dots. And then his eyes went wide.
âSujin isnât home yet. Why donât you wait inside?â Mrs. Kang called out.
âIâm so sorry Mrs. Kang. I didnât recognize you.â Seojun entered, placing the bags on Sujinâs counter.
âItâs okay, Son. Youâve known Sujin long?â
âI went to Sujinâs school. I knew her through Lee Suho.â He had only seen Sujinâs mother a couple of times at school. But never up close. She had seemed so stuck up like Sujin at the time; with her fur coats and expensive jewelry. Now she seemed like just another lady. Her appearance seemed to have humbled after the divorce.
âOh Suho! Lovely child. How is he these days? Sujin doesnât tell me anything.â
âHeâs good maâam.â
Mrs. Kang started lining the containers on the counter. It seemed like too much food for one person.
âSujinnie never eats properly. She always scolds me for worrying but what can I do? She never takes care of herself.â
Indeed, when Mrs. Kang opened Sujinâs fridge, it was empty save a few water bottles and expired milk that Mrs. Kang threw away.
âAnd look at you! All skin and bones! It is unfashionable to be healthy these days?â
It was a complaint he had heard from his mother as well. But Seojun had to maintain a lean figure for his job, as he was about to explain to Mrs. Kang.
âMaâam I actually have to diet becaââ
âI wonât hear it! Sit. I will get you something to eat. Iâve brought more than enough.â Mrs. Kang commanded. Seojun could see where Sujin got her tough exterior from.
âI donât want to be a botherâŚâ
âNonesense! Itâs no bother at all. Especially not for,â she eyed the bouquet Seojun had placed on the counter, âSujinâs friend.â
Seojun wanted to protest Mrs. Kangâs assumptions but figured that denying it would only reinforce the idea. He would let Sujin clear up the matter.
âWell if youâre going to cook Mrs. Kang, you might as well let me help.â Seojun often cooked with his mother and was used to being in the kitchen so his culinary prowess impressed Mrs. Kang greatly.
âYour mother must be so proud of you.â Seojun grinned at the compliment. He decided that he liked Mrs. Kang.
Likewise, Mrs. Kang decided that she liked Seojun. She put the flowers he had brought in a vase and brought it to the table. As they cooked, she went on and on about Sujin and her many accomplishments. The woman was very proud of her daughter.
Seojun listened diligently as Mrs. Kang explained how much she was worried about Sujin. The non-profit sector didnât exactly offer a lucrative career. Not as much being a doctor would have.
âI remember how much she had wanted to be a doctor as a child. Omma, I want to heal everyone, she would tell me. But when her father started pushing her and pushing her⌠suddenly it was all about ranking number 1, not helping people and her heart just wasnât in it anymore.â Mrs. Kang lamented. She gave Seojun a considering look. âHas she told you⌠about her father?â
About the divorce? âYes. I know.â
Mrs. Kang looked at him tenderly, âYou must really be close to my daughter then. Sheâs a very private girl.â
Seojun didnât understand why the woman as acting like it was some secret. Everyone knew about Mr. and Mrs. Kangâs separation.
The woman stared into the distance. âIf I look back, I can only blame myself. I should have stopped it the first day her father started hitting her. But I was blind. I believed that it would all stop if she got good grades and got into a good university. My husband was always a tough man, but had never been like that to me, you see. I didnât realize what he was doing to Sujin till it was too late.â
Seojun froze. He felt he had been told something he wasnât supposed to know.
âAnd then, she started taking her anger out on other people⌠it might have been late, but I finally put my foot down. Iâm glad my girl is in a better place now.â
Mrs. Kang looked down in remorse. Seojun found it hard to keep looking at her. He suddenly recalled what Sujin had said in Jukyungâs video.
I was foolish. I let my personal problems cloud my judgement and I took my frustration and anger out on Lim Jukyung.Â
Ah, crap. Seojun thought.
âMy daughter is a sensitive girl, despite how strong she appears. I just want to know that she is with people who will care for her, and not hurt her.â Mrs. Kang looked at Seojun meaningfully. He swallowed.
âShe is Mrs. Kang. You donât have to worry.â
The woman pressed his hands gratefully. âYou must have heard⌠about what Sujin was involved in recently.â
Seojun was sure he was going to die today. His heart felt like guilt had wrapped its sharp claws around it and was squeezing tightly.
âAh. Yes.â
âDonât believe any of it! My Sujinnie isnât that kind of girlâ
âAh. Yes.â
âShe did go a little astray in school, but what kid doesnât go through a phase like that? Show me a teenager who has never made a mistake!â
âYouâre absolutely right maâam.â Was all Seojun could say.
âIf only I could get my hands on that Han Seojun.â Seojun felt his heart stop. It was then that he realized that he never really introduced himself to Mrs. Kang. âHow dare that no good idol take advantage of my daughter? Ah-nee, what kind of a person stays over a girlâs place like that? And doesnât even help when she gets into trouble because of him?â
Seojun could see his funeral now, his mother crying for him as his friends lined up to regret their loss.
Guys⌠take care. Please check on my mother for me.
The door chimed as Sujin entered. She stopped in her tracks when she noticed Han Seojun and her mother sitting at a table full of food, waiting for her.
âAh, Omma why have you come all this way again? Do you really like tiring yourself out so much?â Sujin scolded as she hurriedly put on her indoor slippers.
âIs that any way to greet your mother?â Mrs. Kang scolded back.
Sujin was undeterred. âYou know I can always come and visit you and Auntie. Why do you have to come here? And look at all this food! How is this okay for one person? It always goes bad and then I have to throw it out.â
âIt goes bad because you donât eat enough, bad girl! You see what I have to deal with?â Mrs. Kang turned to Seojun who had gone white.
âYa Han Seojun, what are you doing here?â Sujin asked him.
There was a second of silence where no one spoke. A pin drop could be heard.
âHan Seojun?â Mrs. Kang looked at Seojun. On stage, with makeup on, Seojun looked different. Here, in person, it was difficult to recognize him. But now that his name had been spoken, Mrs. Kang could see the young man whose face had been plastered all over the articles concerning Sujin.
âYou⌠youâre the Han Seojun from the scandal?â
Sujin quickly caught on. âSeojun. Run.â
And then all hell exploded, or rather, one Mrs. Kang. Sujin jumped in her motherâs path as the woman got up with a slipper in her hand. Han Seojun lept off his chair and bowed furiously.
âI am so sorry Mrs. Kang. I am so sorry for all the trouble caused!â
Sujin desperately tried to block her motherâs blows but Mrs. Kang was a formidable woman. She smacked Han Seojun with her slipper.
âDo. You. Have. Any idea. What. Problems. You. Caused!â She punctuated each word with a smack. Seojun, for his part, did not run but rather took it like a man. He was just glad she was beating him with a slipper and not a heel.
âRun! Why arenât you running?â Sujin asked him as she tried to grab her motherâs wrists.
âAre you protecting him? After everything that happened?â
âIâm really sorry Mrs. Kang.â Seojun said.
âSorry? What good will an apology do? Will an apology undo the pain youâve caused?â Her words sounded eerily familiar.
âAh Omma, stop hitting him! He didnât do anything. It was my fault. It was all my idea.â
Mrs. Kang stopped. What?â
And thus, it became Kang Sujinâs turn to be given the mom-smack down.
âAh Omma WAEEEE??â
âIt was your idea to bring him home?!â
âOmma youâve already beaten me about that!â
âI havenât beaten you enough.â
âMrs. Kang please! We were both drunk. Sujin had no choice but toââ
âWhat?â Mrs. Kang went ballistic.
Sujin glared at Seojun, âHan Seojun do you actually want us both to die?â
âYOU WERE DRUNK?!â
âOmma it wasnât like that!â
âMrs. Kang it really wasnât.â Seojun chimed in.
âIf it wasnât then why is he bringing you flowers? Why is he showing up at your place?â
Sujin looked at the tulips and roses on her table. White tulips, a flower of regret. And yellow roses, flowers of friendship. Sujin knew exactly what they meant. She wondered if Han Seojun knew too or if he just got really lucky with his choices.
It was a while before Mrs. Kang calmed down. Seojun felt thoroughly sore. Both he and Sujin sat on the floor with guilty expressions on their faces, looking like school children being punished.
âGet out. I donât want to see the likes of your around my daughter ever again.â
âOmma.â
Seojun bowed his head to the ground. âI am really sorry Mrs. Kang. Iâm really sorry for all of the trouble that Iâve caused. I assure you I will never let anything like that happen again.â
Mrs. Kang crossed her arms and looked away.
âOmma. Neither of us had any idea that something like this would happen. Its not Seojunâs fault. And besides, he got into trouble too.â Sujin nudged him with her elbow.
âYes, maâam. I was almost kicked out of my company.â Which wasnât exactly true but Seojun didnât mind fibbing a little.
âYou should have been!â Mrs. Kang fumed but then softened when she saw Seojunâs best puppy dog face. Han Seojun was always good with ladies, especially ones that were mad at him.
He inched closer to Mrs. Kang. âMrs. Kang. Iâm really regretful about what Sujin faced.â He took her hands in his. Sujin watched in astonishment as Han Seojun turned her motherâs boiling anger to a low simmer. âBut I promise you, I will do everything in my power to make sure that this never happens again.â
Mrs. Kang cleared her throat.
âAnd look, the food we both prepared has gotten all cold. Wouldnât it be better if we all eat and talk calmly?â
Sujin scoffed, not only at the blatant pandering but at the fact that it was working. Mrs. Kangâs anger all but disappeared. It came to a point that as they all ate, she began taking his side.
âHow could you risk an idolâs reputation like that?â She asked Sujin who could only roll her eyes.
âOmma, how can you say that?â
âI mean, now that I think about it, it isnât Seojunâs fault that his fans came after you.â
âUgh, I canât believe this.â Sujin scowled.
As dumb as Han Seojun had appeared, Sujin had to admit this was pretty shrewd. It made her wonder what else she had misjudged him on. He even got himself invited by Mrs. Kang to come by again for dinner.
âYour mom is incredible.â Seojun told Sujin as they walked to the convenience store. Mrs. Hand had sent them out for some ice-cream since she had brought nothing for dessert.
âSheâs changed a lot after the divorce. Sheâs more herself now.â
They walked slowly, enjoying the night air and the silence. Oddly enough the quiet didnât feel awkward or strange. Neither of them felt any pressure to speak. They got papico, the ice-cream that came in squishy bottles, and sat by on the benches outside.
âKang Sujin,â Seojun began, âabout what happened⌠are you⌠You know when I, um⌠I guess what Iâm trying to say isâŚâ
Sujin laughed, a clear gurgle of joy that made Seojun feel strange in his stomach. âMwo-ya? Has the great Han Seojun been rendered speechless?â She laughed some more and Seojun didnât stop her. âRelax Han Seojun. Iâm fine.â
Seojun looked at his feet. âI⌠wasnât happy with what happened to do⌠with the articles and how everybody was talking about you.â
âGwenchana. Itâs over now. I mean I had to make another Instagram account but all in all, its not as bad now. Besides,â she tilted her chin, âdo you think a bunch of cowards who hide behind usernames are enough to take me down? Iâm Kang Sujin, remember? Badass of Saebom High.â
âI thought I was the badass of Saebom high.â Seojun raised a brow.
âYou were the gangster.â Sujin grinned, eating her ice-cream.
âIâm glad youâre tough. You donât let these things bother you.â
âIâd be lying if I said it didnât bother me. People telling me that Iâm the worst and I should die wasnât exactly easy.â She said grimly. âBut you know what upset me the most?â
âWhat?â
âThat I couldnât beat those cowards up for saying what they did.â Sujin got up and punched the air. âIf I could just get my hands on those twerps then I would teach them a lesson or two.â She punched the air.
The fire in Sujinâs eyes was so comical that Seojun burst out laughing.
âDonât laugh! Hajima! Iâm not joking.â
âKang Sujin, were you always such a fighter?â
âYup!â Sujin stated simply. She sat back besides Seojun, closer this time. And he noticed. âWhat about you?â She asked. âHow are you doing?â
Seojun leaned back leisurely, âEh, Iâm fine. I donât worry about public perception anyway. The people who matter will know me. Everyone else is just noise.â
âI bet your fans would leave you in a second.â Sujin teased.
âDonât diss my fans. Theyâre all cool and awesome.â
âWhat, all two of them? Do they also happen to be named Jukyung and Suho?â
âYouâre forgetting Chorong.â
The two giggled.
âDid your co-workers ask for more autographs?â
âNope. Got fired before they could.â
âWhat?â Seojun stood up. Sujin relayed how her company had let her go after details about her past misconduct were released online.
âHow could they just fire you? Isnât that illegal?â
âCalm down. Itâs normal for that to happen.â
âHow can you be so calm?â
âWould you rather I get angry? Thereâs no point in doing that. I wonât get that job back.â
Seojun pressed his lips together in a tight line and sat back down.
âIâm surprised that youâre actually defending me.â Sujin sounded impressed.
âI mean⌠its wrong. Even if you and I donât get along, whatâs wrong is wrong.â
Sujin chuckled. She looked at the time on her phone. âI should get back. How are you getting home?â
âI brought my bike.â
âYour company lets you ride motorbikes?â
âNope.â Seojun grinned.
âAâight. Good night, Han Seojun. Stay safe.â Sujin walked back in the direction of the apartment. Feeling light and happy. While her online image hadnât completely recovered, her relationship with Han Seojun had. She might not have to simply tolerate his presence now. They might genuinely get along.
âKang Sujin!â Han Seojun called out to her, the woman who he thought was vile and destructive. The person that turned wasnât that woman. It was the little girl who had looked to her father with love but only got his abuse in return.
âIâm sorry I misjudged you.â Seojun told the little girl.
The girl smiled. âIâm sorry I misjudged you too.â
x.
It was unfamiliar territory, getting along with Kang Sujin. More for the group than Han Seojun and Kang Sujin. They all looked at the pair in wonder and shock when Sujin asked Seojun to pass the soy sauce and he obliged. It shocked them further when Sujin laughed when Seojun bragged about being recognized at a department store and being asked for pictures.
âHey, you feeling okay?â Jukyung asked Sujin quietly.
âYeah, why?â Sujin replied.
âNothing. Just asking.â
âHey, whatâs up with you?â Suho asked Seojun privately.
âWhat?â
âYouâre acting all weird around Kang Sujin.â
âWeird how?â
âYouâre being nice.â
âAm I not supposed to be?â
âOkay! Whoâs going to go first?â Taehoon asked the room, interrupting Suho and Seojunâs conversation.Â
They were at Suhoâs apartment where he had a karaoke machine set up. Seojun had finally relented to visiting their place and it was just as painful as he had thought it would be. It was a mishmash to Jukyungâs bright and lively style with Suhoâs dark and moody one.
The posters of rock bands and Junji Itouâs mangas were something both of them shared. It was fascinating how the two of the most caring people in Seojunâs life were into such dark things. Seojun saw Sujin eye one of the horror comic book posters suspiciously, as if the monster drawn in them could come out any second.
Chorong sang first, sharing a duet with his girlfriend. Then Taehoon and Suah went next. Duets seemed to be the theme of the night. Jukyung and Suho went next.
âAlright? Who else?â
Sujin was the only girl left.
âWell Iâm not going up there.â She said when everyone looked at her. She eyed the other boys, all of whom were terrified of her. Even they could still hear Kang Sujin saying Ya Han Seojun, are you a gangster?!
âJukyung-ah. Sing with me.â Sujin grabbed Jukyungâs hand and led her up before she could say anything.
âIâm singing too!â Suah joined.
Seojun went next. His was a solo and he clearly was the best performer. His rich baritone singing in a soft melody made everyone pay attention.
âIsnât it nice to have an idol as a friend?â Suah asked. âIts like having a private concert.â Jukyung and Sujin nodded in agreement.
Everyone swayed their heads to the beat, except for Kang Sujin who was noticing the lyrics Han Seojun was singing.
I want to give you all of my days
I want to tell you all these feelings of mine
The sleepless blue winds
Brightly light up this night
He was singing about Lim Jukyung. Sujin looked over to her friend, who was looking longingly in Suhoâs eyes. The two were entranced with each other, not noticing Han Seojun who stood just a couple of feet away, pouring his heart out.
After all the fun had been wrapped up, Seojun and Sujin had been the only two to stay back. Sujin had helped Jukyung clean up while Suho went to throw out the trash.
As Sujin cleaned the dishes, Seojun sat in the living room, looking at all of the pictures Jukyung and Suho had hung up. He could see how Suho and Jukyung would sit on the very couch he was on and watch TV together or lie around reading books.
He tried to replay those images, with himself there with Jukyung instead of Suho but he couldnât. He couldnât lie to himself about who she belonged to.
âYou know, Han Seojun, I just realized something.â Sujin called from the kitchen.
âWhat?â
âYou have two hands.â
Seojun looked at her like she had lost her mind. âWow, Kang Sherlock. Your powers of deduction amaze me.â
âSo, since you have those two hands, and youâre a gentleman, why not help me out over here? I assume you would feel bad that Iâm the only one doing any actual cleaning.â
âYou assume incorrectly. I have no issues with you doing all the cleaning.â Seojun turned back to the TV and was promptly hit in the head with a dish rag.
âOops.â Sujin said flatly.
Seojun got up, dish rag in hand. Wordlessly, he took out the dishes from the washer and lined them up in the cabinets.
âArenât you ever afraid that Jukyung will be uncomfortable about you singing love songs to her?â Sujin asked in a low voice.
âWhat do you mean?â
âThat song you sang. My heart is full of you, Iâm starting to take after you?â
Seojun eyed her. âShe wonât know.â
âI did.â
âYeah but, youâre you and Jukyungâs Jukyung.â
âSo?â
âSoâŚâ Seojun leaned closer, âyou ranked number two in class for a reason.â
âSujin-ah! I told you I would take care of everything.â Jukyung appeared from her bedroom.
âDonât worry about it. Han Seojun helped.â Sujin assured.
The pair said their goodbyes to the couple and exited together. Han Seojun said nothing when he started walking his own way, while Kang Sujin turned to wave at him but was unseen. He was too lost in his own broken heart to notice anyone or anything.
She simply sighed, took it as just a Han Seojun thing and started walking in the other direction.
xi.
âI still canât get used to this.â Suah said, waving a spoon between Han Seojun and Kang Sujin. The two sat opposite each other and were eating their food peacefully.
It was this peace that bothered Suah.
âI mean, how can you two just get along?â
âWeâre adults Choi Su. We can learn how to get along.â Sujin stated.
Suho spluttered in laughter. âI thought you said that Seojun was a giant baby with no manners?â
Seojun gave Sujin a scathing look. Sujin went pink, âI never said that! You take that back!â
âItâs still strange.â Suah leaned closer. âWhat happened? Have you guys settled your differences?â
âHan Seojun got Sujin flowers.â Suho said cheekily.
âYah!â Seojun protested. But it was in vain, the deed was done, and everyone oohed and aahed at this news.
âDid you really get her flowers?â
âWait, when did this happen?â
âDoes that mean that Seojun apologized first?â
âWhat kind of flowers?â
Seojun looked at Suho with the rage of a thousand suns. Suho just grinned back.
âArenât flowers romantic?â
âYa! There was nothing romantic about it. All I got her were yellow roses and white tulips.â Seojun defended.
âOoooOoooh. Roooses. Roses are totally romantic.â Taehoon teased.
âThey were yellow. Yellow roses are for friendship!â
âSo, are you two friends?â Jukyung asked and everyone looked at Seojun and Sujin.
âMeh.â They both shrugged at the same time.
âOmo! Look at how in sync they are!â
âWe are not.â They both said in sync.
Seojun had to admit, their group gatherings were much more comfortable now that he and Sujin had cleared the air between them. He enjoyed discovering how Sujin was less the ice princess he had thought her to be and more a regular girl. She also turned out to be much cooler than he had expected.
She had been the only one to see his discomfort when Jukyung and Suho suggested they all go on an overnight trip with them. Going to see their apartment; the very proof that Lim Jukyung and Lee Suho ate and sleptâOh God, donât think about them sleepingâtogether was painful enough. Seojun didnât need to see them canoodling for an entire weekend.
âWhat about it guys? Shall we go?â Jukyung looked around as everyone nodded excitedly, including Sujin.
But then her eyeâs met Seojunâs. He said nothing but he didnât need to.
âLim Ju, itâll be difficult for me to join. I just lost my job, remember? An overnight trip is...â Seojun knew Sujin was just making up an excuse.
âOh, oh right. Sorry Kang Su-ya. I totally forgot. Something else then!â
The group moved on to discussing other options. Seojun sent Sujin a grateful look. She acted nonchalant, as if she had not just overturned everyoneâs plans for him.
âThanks. For what you did back in there.â He told her as they were all leaving.
âForget about it.â She waved a hand in dismissal.
The next time the group gathered at a fancier restaurant than usual. A suggestion by Suho who had offered to pay for the food tonight.
âThis place is so beautiful.â Suah commented looking around the interior.
âAre we celebrating something?â Sujin asked. âThis doesnât seem like a regular get-together.â
Sujin had only asked for the sake of asking. But something about the way Suho looked at her told Seojun that she was on to something.
âWell,â Jukyung held up her hand, âwe do have something to announce.â
And announce she did. The big fat diamond resting on her ring finger had a lot to say. And suddenly everyone erupted with joy. The girls took Jukyung in their arms, squealing and crying with joy. The boys surrounded Suho, patting him on the back, congratulating him.
All except Seojun, who just sat there in a daze. Sujin happened to look over and see him, frozen in his seat. Sujin wasnât alone in her observation. Taehoon also noticed but missed the implication.
âLook! Han Seojun is actually so shocked heâ"
Sujin made it look like an accident, her bumping into the table and sending a glass down on the floor, shattering into a million pieces. The sound shook Seojun out of his daze and also distracted everyone from realizing Seojunâs inner turmoil.
âOh shit.â Sujin said looking down.
âHey, be careful.â Jukyung said.
âYou okay?â Suho asked Jukyung, taking her arm.
âExcuse me, can we get someone to clean this up?â Taehoon asked the waiter.
The fuss over the broken glass gave Seojun enough time to recover. He then congratulated Suho with a massive hug.
âYou both deserve each other. I mean it.â He told Suho and he meant it.
Maintaining a fake smile over dinner was easy. Everyone else was so chatty that Seojunâs and Sujinâs relative silence went unnoticed. Suah pestered Jukyung for details: âHow did it happen?â, âWhen?â, âWhy didnât you call me immediately?â. Taehoon made jokes about marriage being the end of romance to which Suah started an argument with him and then it became about settling matters between the two.
Sujin didnât remember much of what happened after that, the rest of the night was a blur. She just hoped that she had maintained enough dignity to not appear as bitter as she actually felt.
Even though they all parted very late in the night, Sujin couldnât go directly home. She needed something to ease the pain. So naturally, she went to the nearest tent bar she could find. The place seemed to be overcrowded, with people waiting outside for others to leave. Sujin managed to sneak in and grab a table.
She downed half of a soju bottle in one go but then couldnât muster the energy to drink further. Her side dishes went untouched. All Sujin could do was stare and wonder if there was any way to just take her heart out of her chest and throw it away. Because there seemed to be no relief from this pain she was feeling.
She banged her head on the table. âAh wae? Why canât I just move on?â She asked herself in frustration.
âUgh, why the hell are you here?â That irritated tone and deep voice could only belong to one person. And indeed, when Sujin looked up she saw Han Seojun a few tables over looking at her in disdain.
âWae? You have a claim on this place?â Sujin raised a critical brow.
âAnd what if I do?â
âThen give me everything for free. Since weâre friends who get along.â
âNo. Friends pay double.â
âHow stingy.â Sujin took another shot of soju.
The man running the tent bar came over. âWhy donât you two share a table since you know each other? I have customers waiting to be seated.â
âNo way, Iâm not sitting with her.â Seojun grumbled.
âAha! I knew it! Being all nice to me was just an act.â
The owner ignored Sujin, âHow can two youngsters be so rude? Get up! Iâm moving you over there.â
This was how Han Seojun came to drink with Kang Sujin for the second time. They both looked at each other with scowling faces.
âWhat happened, Kang Sujin? You were acting all happy for the lucky couple.â Seojun taunted. He seemed a little tipsy but so was Sujin.
âOf course, Iâm happy. Iâm so, so happy.â She said wistfully.
Seojun scoffed. âIs that why you were whining about not being able to move on? I thought you said you didnât like Lee Suho anymore.â
Sujin narrowed her eyes. âI donât. And even if I allegedly did, at least I held it all in. You were clearly about to run away with Jukyung before I saved you.â
âSaved me? Puh-lease.â
âWhy? Do you think that glass fell on its own?â
Seojun gave her a sideways look before taking another shot.
âYou gonna eat that?â He pointed a chin to her plate.
âNah, have it.â
They sat in silence for a moment. A comfortable silence where neither felt compelled to say anything.
Sujin shook Seojun when she suddenly smacked her glass down on the table. âIâm over Lee Suho.â She declared. âIâm over Lee Suho⌠butâŚâ
âJust because youâre over him, doesnât mean you stopped loving him.â Seojun said what she was thinking.
She looked at him, her pain evident on her face. In that moment, he let himself be vulnerable too. Â
âIsnât it funny? Out of everyone I know, youâre the only one who gets⌠this.â Sujin said.
Seojun chuckled. âExactly. Who woulda thought? Kang Sujin and Han Seojun having something in common.â
âYou know itâs gonna hurt even worse from now on, right? Weâre the closest to those two. That means weâll be involved in everything.â
Seojun rubbed his faced. âI canât think about that right now. Or I really will die.â
Sujin understood what he meant. âYou know what I want?â
âWhat?â
âI want Suho to never find out that I still like him.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean, I canât help that I feel this way right? You canât stop yourself from feeling what you feel. But⌠I wanna keep my dignity. I wanna still be cool and⌠not be seen as some pathetic loser whoâs still after her best friendâs boyfriend.â
Seojun took a shot, nodding.
Sujin leaned forward. âThatâs why, I suggest we help each other out.â
Seojun gave her a look. âHow so?â
âWell, if we see the other being too transparent, then we stop them, or at least take the attention away so that the other can collect themselves.â
âLike the broken glass today?â
âLike the broken glass today. And if itâs getting too painful, then we can just talk about it.â
Seojun laughed. âKang Sujin, offering therapy. Thatâs rich.â
âNot therapy. Friendship. It helps if you talk about stuff like this.â Sujin insisted.
Seojun gave her a considering look. âWhatâs in it for me? These seem like things you want to do.â
âYouâll be able to attend Jukyungâs wedding without feeling like youâre dying on the inside.â
âThereâs no guarantee that will happen.â
âYouâre right, there isnât. But at least thatâs what itâll look like. Think about it Han Seojun. Do you want Jukyung to always see you as the friend who is in love with her? Or do you want her to see you as a cool friend who she can comfortably rely on, without wondering if sheâs hurting his feelings.â
Seojun thought about it. It felt like a bad idea. But there was a part of Han Seojun that was tired of his own attachment to Lim Jukyung. If it meant that it would help him move on, then he was willing to try anything
âAlright, Kang Sujin.â He raised his glass. Sujin clinked hers with his. âLetâs try this.â

Every month of 2021
Post your favourite or most popular post from each month this year (itâs okay to skip months)
tagged by: @storgeâ 𼰠â¤ď¸đť
This was fun!! Especially since I only started to learn and made gifsets in March, even though Iâve been on this hellsite (affectionate) for too long đ
March: Most popular is this vincenzo set of them watching each other sleep but also another one of my fav is this hot couple đĽ from River where the moon rises
April: Another from Vincenzo for most popular from the best ep đđĽ and the start of my next obsession with hana x doki from taxi driver
May: The month where I made a few manipulative sets for Seojun x Sujin from True Beauty because I am never over the fact that they could make them the IT couple, these two sexy ppl, but the writer decided that it was never gonna happen. So I made them canon, inspired by my fellow junjin enthusiasts and had tons of fun with it hahahah.Â
June: Most popular from Move to Heaven, this father-son scene đđ. I have to add this adnevent set for pride month, Yeh Jun from Run On. This set took a really long time cos I was still very new on the blending gifs together/using overlays, but I am very pleased at how this turned out.
July: My #1 relatable gif manipulation of Yeonghwa from Run On breaking down on Mondays is the most popular. I mean, where is the lieeee. When I saw this prompt, thereâs only one thing in mind, which is Yeonghwa crying and Dan Ah trying to calm him down lolol
August: ooh this reached >1k! My favourite childhood/comfort movie Anastasia! letterboxd review set. But I also have to add the loml Rurouni Kenshin!!! this mannnnn and also the last 2 movie from Rurouni Kenshin, Iâm still sad.
September: Yeah Squid GameđŚÂ as most popular, no doubt. Special addition to this set from Dali & the cocky prince. Very happy with the colouring here hehehehe.
October: Most popular and also one of my fav couple from Yumiâ cells!!
November: This set from Howlâs Moving Castle got the most notes and iâm very happy with my colouring for it hehe. Bonus! I had so much fun editing this funny scene from The Red Sleeve into a set.
December: This adorable precious set of Deok Im, Yi San and the puppy from (currently obsessed) The Red Sleeve had the most notes for obvious reasons. Another set that Iâm really fond of is the scenery set I made for Bulgasal, the cinematography for this drama *chefâs kiss*.
I think most of my mutuals are already tagged but Iâm tagging (Only if you want to!!!) @shangyangjunzhu @kakuusei @musicdramalove đ

what if iâm someone i donât want around? (excerpt)
Pairing: Seojun x Sujin Summary: Seojun, now an idol, met with an unexpected but familiar face in his new dietitian nutritionist, Kang Sujin. Though they started off rocky during this reunion, they eventually decided best to work together as best as they could. Sujin struggles with her inner demons, and Seojun encounter new ones. During one of the worser nights, both of them seemed to collide. Timeline: Future-fic. Based on this AU. Midway through the plot â an excerpt.
TRIGGER WARNING: Unhealthy coping mechanism, PTSD, abuse mention tw.
.
âWhatâs your problem?â Seojun doesnât mean to sound like he does. Which is cruel, demanding, cold. He canât help it though. Sheâs been - off, the whole night. Meaner. Which, well, he doesnât really care for most of the time. Itâs become a staple of who she is since heâd known her, all those years ago, and sheâd only grown to become more direct ever since they met again.
But to yell at some poor intern girl just because she bumped into her?
Seojun has never tolerated bullies. Couldnât. Not after what happened to Seyeon.
âDid you throw your manners into the trash?â He demands again, straight through his teeth. Sujin is looking at him with those piercing blank eyes, looking almost like she could muster the courage to become just as angry - but she doesnât. She looks a little empty, instead. Hollow. âThe intern apologised. You didnât have to yell at her.â
âRight,â She somehow says - her tone clipped. Short. âItâs my fault.â
Seojun says nothing to that. Yeah, it is, he wants to scoff. Wants to roll his eyes and probably scold at her some more. If that had been Gowoon, he wouldnât have hesitated. Hell, if itâd been Lim Juyeong, the mess that the guy is, (like really, what is Heegyeong-noona and Lim Jugyeong doing with their little brother anyways? Why does Seojun always end up feeling like a babysitter?), he wouldâve gotten an earful.
But with Kang Sujin â whatever piece of mind heâd like to give vanish away when he remembers that night. Cheap store-bought beers and her hands trembling when sheâs holding the can. I didnât want to be like my parents. I donât want to be angry or look away and pretend that something bad isnât happening. I want - to be good.
He opens his mouth, about to ask if sheâs okay, untilâ
âYou should hit me.â
Seojun snaps his eyes straight to her face.
The emptiness from before is replaced now, quite horribly, with this layers of - determination. But not the good kind. No. Maybe it isnât determination at all. Desperation, he could almost hear something in him echoing the word back. Sheâs desperate - to be hit? Seojun feels something inside him drops.
âWhat theââ
âCome on,â Sujin comes closer, her eyes growing wide. Insistent. Sheâs crazy, he thinks in that split second, backing away. âHit me.â
âOi, Kang Sujinââ
âWhat!â She yells then, her voice echoing in that small pantry he manages to drag her in. Sheâs pushing against him now. Tiny hands in her stupid gloves knocking against his chest. âYouâre not man enough? Think I canât hit you right back? Hit me!â
Sheâs fucking crazy, Seojun thinks again, this time with more force behind it rather than a simple shock. He grasps at her shoulders - itâs easy, since sheâs still small even after all these years, and he towers over her like itâs nothing. But her arms are still flailing, still punching him and shoving.
He shouts back, âKang Sujin!â
âWhat,â this time when she snaps right back at him, glaring, itâs as if Seojunâs momentarily back at their school, confronting her in that small space between the class building â all red brick, and hot anger. Although heâs not sure now from where the anger really comes from: his, or hers. âArenât you Han Seojun the mad dog? How many gangs have you beaten up in high school, huh? Youâve become weak now? Youâre a coward?â
âKang Sujin, stop,â his voice wavers. Is he terrified? Maybe. Of what - heâs not sure. Not her, not specifically. But the implication behind it. The invitation to be hurt. Heâs - seen this somewhere, he thinks.
Maybe itâs in Suho, when he steps into that traffic ages ago.
âWhy? Why should I?!â She yells back, her voice bouncing off the walls. Seojun can see a few people and peers peering in. He glares, and they scurry off. âI yelled at the poor girl. She just bumped into me, and I tore her down. I didnât care about her. I deserve to be punished. Iâm horrible.â
âThatâs notââ
âI deserve to be hit,â the traces of red in her eyes are brightened now. Enhanced. Seojun can see tears prickling by her eyelashes. Her teeth are clattering together - sheâs trembling again. Sheâs so small and angry and trembling, like a dog shivering from the rain. Seojun feels an ache in him. He doesnât what it is.
âC-come on ... Come on, Han Seojunââ She grasps his hand.
Brings it to her face.
Seojun could only watch, wide-eyed somehow. Stupid.
Like heâs still stumbling over his Korean alphabets, like heâs that fifth-grader who still wets his bed. Stupid.
âYou know you want to. Remember what I did to Jugyeong?â She says again, stubborn. Yes, he does remember. How could he have forgotten? But itâs also so long ago. So many things have happened since. And, moreover, he also remembers her, whispering when she thought he couldnât hear, Jugyeong was my friend too. âI exposed her. When she trusted me. Did you know that? She trusted me with her bare-face and I told the whole school. That was me.â
âStop, Kang Sujin.â
âHit me. Punch me.â He realises, suddenly, that heâs had the hand that sheâs holding curled into a fist. Fuck, Seojun curses under his breath, wanting to pull it away, but Sujinâs grip is tighter. Her voice breaks. âC-come on. I deserve it. Iâm horrible. I was a bad friend. A bad person. I wasâ please just hit me.â
âNo.â His answer comes resolute, strong.
That seems to switch something inside of her. In an instant, she yells again, coming at him. âCoward!â She shouts, high-pitched, kicking and clawing, but Seojunâs quicker. Years on the street still has him fast on his feet, and he snatches her from the back, pinning her arms to the side.
Sheâs yelling still, fighting. Her legs are thrashing about. Seojun avoids the bang of her skull, and he shouts too â just so she would hear. Just so she would know.
âI wonât hit you.â
âFUCKING COWARD!â
âFuck, Sujinââ
âYouâre a fucking coward. You think I canât take you?!â
She probably could. Leave a scratch or two. Itâd be bloodied. But that wonât do - and, anyways. Whatâs the point? Rather than a fight, he just - ... well, he doesnât know what he wants, but not this. Those nights when he could finally convince her to stay for dinner, maybe. Or those few times when he made her smile, and he feels a little less lonely. And he knows he made her feel the same.
I want to be good, she told him.
He slides down against the door where her struggling has taken him, with Kang Sujin still in his arms. He doesnât let up. He knows he couldnât. Sheâs still fighting against the hold, but it seems as if she knows sheâs lost it when they both are on the ground.
Seojun canât see her face, but she shakes.
He breathes, heavy, and forces out again. âI wonât hit you. Ever.â
Slowly, yet all at once, Seojun hears a wretched sob. Sujin hangs her head, the tips of her black hair touching the knuckles where his hands clutched together across her chest. Seojun lays his head against the door. He sighs.
âNot even back then.â The back of the school. The Lim Jugyeong Bare-face Article. He was angry, yes. But he thinks he doesnât think he would ever â âSo, stop asking me to do it already, will you?â
Sujin is silent, crying.
The sound of it â Seojun doesnât think he could ever forget. The inhale gasps, the way she holds in her voice, but it leaks in these broken notes anyway, resonating in the air. And all he could hear besides is the slow buzzing of the refrigerator. Heâs still holding on to her, staring at the back of her head.
âItâs okay, itâs okay,â he somehow finds himself saying. He leans forward - kisses the top of that circle where the roots of her hair meet, before he just rests his forehead against it. Waits. Breathes. âI forgive you.â
Sujin shakes some more, weeping.
.
A/N: I still have a vague timeline for this AU, but this scene has been playing in my mind. Iâm planning to put the title as âMail Delivery Failed: Returning Message To Senderâ because I really wanted to explore about both of their heartbreaks from pining and/or loving Suho and Jugyeong respectively, even if itâd been about eight years ago in this AU, but yeah. Weâll see.
Thanks for reading!

Tell about a kdrama you hated or disliked the most and why đ
Read more below for juicy content đ
Hahaha okay not so juicy. But helloooo and thank you for dropping by to ask my opinion on a kdrama I hated/disliked the most. This is a tricky one friend...loook I have a list of dramas that were not to my liking. Hate is a big word so I'll choose one that I disliked most recently.
True Beauty (2020) : SPOILERS AHEAD
I started this drama because of 2 people and that is Hwang Inyeop and Park Youna. I expected the whole love triangle and whatnot because I read the webtoon. But they changed most of it for the drama (expected) and it could go right but it went downhill wrong. I thought since they're gonna make a drama for it, maybe take the opportunity to convey a better message? Nope. I think the main part that made me disliked it is the fact that they acknowledged and showed that being pretty is all there is to be likeable. There was a scene where the mum actually went to a plastic surgeon for advise after knowing her daughter got bullied for being "ugly". She wasn't even ugly to start with đ. I guess they tried to show the whole "love yourself, you don't need makeup to impress" but they failed, pretty badly. The plot is just flat....there's no substance, I mean high school dramas can have a LOT of potential but this just wasn't it.
I'm sorry but the main couple was kinda..boring. It just doesn't entirely worked for me, because the plot is thatttttt thin. A plop of water drop.
//ABUSE TW// They "touched" on domestic/child abuse for Park Youna's character Kang Sujin but they left her in a lurch, they showed some slapping scenes, and her obsessively washing her hands BUT they never venture into. They didn't give her character justice. FANFIC WRITERS GAVE HER JUSTICE. You can't just shove some scenes, expect ppl to empathise (the amount of hate her character received) and then suddenly made her appear for less than 30secs at the end of the drama, all "healed" and normal?
Also how dare they put hwang inyeop and park youna tgt and not make them a thing?(will never get over this fact and can never move on from shipping seojun x sujin) Like instead of sappy love triangles, they could have been each other's comfort. Friendships didn't have to be broken for all the clichĂŠ stuffs. They could be the side couple, i'll even forgive if it's platonic and not romantic love. This could have been a healing high school relatable drama...unfortunately not. Don't waste your time to attempt this drama if you haven't watch it. Just go for fanmade MVs and fanfics if you like the actors/actresses/characters, fans did WAY more out of their own creativity than the actual writers.
So yeah that's my opinion hahah I talked too much and this is only ONE kdrama.
If you're interested to know more for my other list of disliked dramas, let me know! Again thank you sooo much for dropping by with this ask đ
