today in Things My Brother And I Stayed Up Late Doing: finding dangerous chemicals in the house in an attempt to understand why most of them DO NOT say "If swallowed, seek medical attention." Not even on the turpentine. Not even on the METHO.
whatever regulatory body is in charge of this appears to believe that if you drink a glass of turpentine, you're good to deal with that on your own. they're not your mum. the poison hotline is there if you want it but honestly you can just chill. its fine.
not oven cleaner though. if you get oven cleaner in your mouth, that's a "seek medical advice" situation.

(edit: don’t reblog this without the extra info added in subsequent reblogs)
so I’ve been putting loads of psas on fb but I should probably put them here too:
1) if the active ingredient in your disinfectant is benzalkonium chloride then it’s not very effective at killing coronavirus (even if it says hospital grade on the bottle)
in order to save isopropyl and ethanol based disinfectant for your hands, you’d be better off mixing a 0.1% solution of sodium hypochlorite (the chemical in bleach and mould killer) to use on surfaces and objects
2. do not rely on homemade hand sanitiser. you need a concentration of at least 60% ethanol or isopropyl to kill coronavirus and when you mix that with moisturiser or glycerin or aloe vera you can’t be sure that the concentration is consistent throughout the whole batch
this is also why if you make a disinfectant by diluting chemicals with water then you should shake it regularly
(these days many brands of methylated spirits are made with ethanol instead of toxic methanol but if the bottle just says 95% ethanol then make sure to look the product up to find out what the remaining 5% is because it could be methanol and you do NOT want to put methanol on your hands)
3. wash your hands with soap if you sneeze or cough onto your hands. hand sanitiser doesn’t always kill coronavirus if it’s protected by a layer of mucus
4. (we probably all know this by now) wash your hands for 20 seconds at least. that’s how long it usually takes to wash viruses off your hand. so if you wash your hands slowly then you need to wash them for longer and don’t forget under the fingernails (now is a great time to not have long nails)
5. washing hands with soap and using hand sanitiser and especially using plain old isopropyl antiseptic on hands is going to make your hands very dry which will be uncomfortable and could cause dermatitis so moisturise your hands as much as you need to
6. some labs studies show that coronavirus can still be infectious in droplets in the air after an infected person sneezes or coughs for up to 3 hours afterwards. so if you can open windows or change your air conditioner settings to let in more fresh air then that’s great. it also means you should try not to touch your face at all after you’ve been out in public (especially in a crowded or enclosed space) until you get a chance to wash your face. it’s probably a good idea to wash your face every time you get home (make sure the face wash isn’t one of the soap free kinds bc you need soap)
7. if you want to save your disinfectant then consider quarantining everything you bring into your house that you don’t need right away. coronavirus can live on steel or plastic for around 72 hrs, on cardboard for around 24 hrs and on copper for around 4 hrs. also idk any exact time but apparently it doesn’t live as long on porous surfaces like natural fibres (hair, clothing, etc) so taking canvas bags shopping instead of plastic bags might be a good idea
this is based on googling not on expertise. if any of this is wrong or outdated information then please let me know
Update: i removed my advice about hydrogen peroxide because it may have been incorrect

Me and My Shadow
I was digging around in my files, as I am wont to do, and I found this story from last season, about 95% finished. Remember when they basically had no scenes at all together? And we were all starving for any little bit of Killervibe we could get? This is something of what I wanted to see after S4′s mid-season finale.
Just as a refresher, this takes place toward the end of the episode where Amunet Black kidnapped Caitlin, locked dampening cuffs on her. Before that happened, however, Caitlin discovered that Cisco, Harry, and Ralph all had private jokes and funny stories about hanging out with Killer Frost.
This story isn’t overtly romantic but it is about Cisco and Caitlin’s relationship at that point in the show. Title from the 1927 song, sung by oh so many people.
Me and My Shadow
Cisco peered at the power dampener Amunet Black had fastened around Caitlin's wrist. "Who designed this, the Incredible Hulk?" He tapped it. "Could it get any bigger and clunkier? Ugh. I'm so offended."
"Me, too, considering it held me prisoner," Caitlin said dryly. She waved her wrist a little, inviting him to look at the catch. It was a heavy-duty metal latch with wires woven over it in some way he couldn't quite follow. "Can we remove this, please?"
"Oh, yeah." He opened the toolkit he'd brought upstairs from his lab and pulled out some wire snips and an electric saw.
"Careful!" she said.
He paused. "It's not gonna blow up if I don't snip the right wire, is it?"
She angled her wrist. "No, but it's got spikes on the inside. It's part of the function somehow."
Now he could see them, thin metal needles piercing her flesh. A few dots of blood smeared her skin.
"Shit!" He yanked his hand away. All his poking and prodding must have been digging them in even further. Why the hell hadn't she said anything before this?
Probably the same reason she'd waited to ask him to remove it until after Dominic Lanse had been taken to a hospital and thoroughly checked over. Caitlin putting herself last again.
Another thought occurred. "Oh, fuck, it's not stabbing your veins or anything, is it?"
She touched the inside of her wrist. "No, it's just the top and sides."
"Well, that was nice of her," he said sarcastically, and got to work on the catch. The design might offend every aesthetic bone in his body, but it was doing the job very well. He could feel his own powers going a little fuzzy and wobbly, this close to it. And it also seemed to have solved the power issue he'd struggled with so much. He was going to have a look at this when he got it off her wrist.
She was quiet while he worked, and while he normally would have chattered and joked, all his lightness seemed like it was trapped underneath a boulder in the pit of his stomach.
Yelling at Ralph had helped some, but he still felt like a turd. Sure, Caitlin, the nasty, mean alter ego that you never wanted is our favorite new buddy. Yeah, we have a great time with her! We have inside jokes and everything!
He knew she knew he hadn't meant it like that. But just because he hadn't meant it didn't mean it hadn't hurt her. He remembered the look in her eyes.
And Harry had gone to apologize first. Harry! When Harry I-Can-Only-Relate-to-Other-Versions-of-Myself Wells was doing better at friending than you, that was kind of a bad sign.
He'd come for her. He'd rescued her from Amunet Black. She had to know he valued her more than Killer Frost. Right?
Yeah, he'd come for her, but so had fucking Ralph.
He glanced up, wondering how to start saying he was sorry, and found her staring off into space, looking thoughtful.
"Hey," he said, and her eyes came back around. They looked like root beer in this light, the way he liked them best. He smiled at her. "What's churning your butter, cup?"
"Just thinking how nice it was to handle something on my own for once, instead of having to depend on my mean roommate."
His stomach dropped. "Caitlin - "
She looked at her wrist. "Maybe you should leave this on."
"Leave on the spiky hurty ugly accessory? That's a hard no," he said, and snipped one last wire. "Lay your hand down and keep vewwy vewwy still," he added in his best Elmer Fudd imitation.
She smiled absently and flattened her palm to her lab table. He turned on the circular saw and started cutting through the lock. It was tough stuff, and he had to stop a couple of times to switch out the blade. Finally, the bracelet cracked in two, and he switched off the saw before it brushed her skin.
She pulled the cuff open, wincing as the spikes tugged out of her flesh, and let it clatter to the table. Now she wore a cuff of tiny pinpricks, welling with blood. It wasn't a good look, in Cisco's opinion.
"Mmm," she said, grimacing at the injuries. "I'd better get this cleaned up and bandaged." She rummaged in some drawers.
"Frost up," he suggested before he thought, and felt his stomach drop again. God. He'd stepped in it again. "Just - just to get rid of that," he added quickly. "Let her hypermetabolism take care of it."
"It's fine," she said, not looking at him as she wiped each pinprick down with a sterile wipe. "It's good. You should get along with people who are fighting alongside you." She tossed a used one, pink with blood, into the biohazard bin and pulled another one from the dispenser.
"Look, don't pretend we didn't hurt your feelings."
"They're my feelings," she said. "I'll handle them."
"Yeah, that's a skill you excel at."
She gave him a withering look. "I had a bad evening. I got over it."
"Okay, then how about letting me apologize?"
"You have nothing to apologize for. You can have friends other than me. You do have friends other than me. It's selfish and self-centered to be jealous of that."
She recited it as if it was something she'd said to herself over and over again.
"It's human to feel left out," he said. "And I was part of making you feel left out, and I'm really sorry for that."
"Yes, and I handled it." She bowed her head over her wrist, dabbing antiseptic cream on the marks. "Thanks for getting that cuff off me. You should probably clean it." She handed him a container of Q-tips and a bottle of ethanol.
He took them back to the table where the cuff still sat, dark and powerless now. He started cleaning the spikes, watching the white cotton soak up pink blood. He found he was gritting his teeth.
Why wouldn't she smile and accept his apology?
Why wouldn't she just let him feel better about seeming to prefer her darker side?
Why couldn't he just go back to thinking that she'd made peace with Killer Frost, now that she wasn't one of the bad guys, and didn't have any feelings about her divided self whatsoever?
Just like he was perfectly fine with the thought of Reverb, or any of his other evil doppelgangers that infested the multiverse. Oh yeah. No misgivings there at all.
He let out his breath and tossed the Q-tip down.
"You know," he said, "eight months ago, you never would have convinced me that there could be anything I liked about Killer Frost, but I do."
Caitlin looked up, but didn't say anything. She just watched him, silent, her face flat and expressionless.
"She's tough. A survivor. A fighter. She sees what needs to be done and gets it done. She's smart and she thinks on her feet. Every time she throws down, I swear she has three or four nifty new tricks that never even crossed my mind."
"Okay," she said. "I get it. You don't have to keep singing her praises."
He went to her and took her tight shoulders in his. "And you know what? Everything I like best about her is something she gets from you."
Her eyes met his. They were darker now.
"Tough. Smart. Creative. Gets the job done. Sound familiar?"
"A fighter, though?"
"Yeah."
"I'm not a fighter. I run and I hide," she said bitterly. "Just like Harry told me to do at Jitters. I didn't even try and bring her out until I was cornered, and that didn't work."
"Have you ever once run and hid when someone needed medical help?"
"That's different."
"I dunno if it is. That's your wheelhouse. Kicking ass is Frost's. Use the right tool for the right purpose. Killer Frost isn't always the right choice for what needs to get done."
She was quiet for a long moment. "Amunet Black said something like that."
He recoiled. "She did?"
Caitlin shrugged. "She wanted me to get the job done. She probably could have threatened me some more, but she took the logic route and pointed out why she needed me, not Frost. It worked. I got the job done."
Okay. He officially sucked as a friend. Amunet Black had figured out what Caitlin needed to hear before he had. That she, Caitlin, was valuable and valued, that her skills weren't lesser, that she was strong and effective in her own way.
He tried to make his voice light. "Much as I hate to agree with someone with that dated of a hairstyle, she had a point. We couldn't do what we do without you."
Her eyes searched his and then she sighed. Not a resigned sigh or an unhappy one. There was relief in it. As if she was letting out a breath she'd held for too long.
Then she hugged him, hard and quick. "Thank you," she said.
"Anytime," he said. "Really, I mean it. Anytime you're feeling conflicted over your morally ambiguous doppelganger, talk to me."
"It's not her state of evil or good," she said thoughtfully. "I mean, obviously I would rather she's fighting against the bad guys rather than alongside them. But it's - " She rubbed her wrists again. "It was easier when she was the bad one and I was the good one, and I had good things - like friends - and she didn't."
"I don't think either of you are that simple," he said. "I don't think anything's that simple."
She toyed with the q-tips. "The thing is," she said, brows drawn together, "I've spent my entire life trying not to show it when I'm scared, or angry, or upset, or even just sad."
"That's not news," he pointed out. He still remembered nearly a year of her flat, expressionless face after the explosion.
"Because nobody has time for that," she went on. "You know? Nobody wants to put up with that. People like a cheerful, helpful, smart little girl. Nobody likes a crybaby who can't do anything."
One day, Cisco reflected, he really was going to go find Mama Snow and punch her in the mouth. He didn't like hitting women, even the ones that hit him first, but boy, could he make an exception.
"So I tried to be cheerful and helpful and smart, and if I couldn't manage to fake any of those, I could at least push down all the bad feelings and show nothing. Until last year. I stopped being able to push things down. And in a way, it made sense that when I lost control of all my rage and my fear, that I lost you. All of you. Because that's what you get. Nobody wants you if you're like that."
He opened his mouth.
She aimed him a look. "And yes, Cisco, I know that I lost all of you because she joined forces with Savitar and was instrumental in H.R.s death and Iris's attempted murder. I understand that. I'm not stupid."
He had been going to say, she'd lost them because she'd left, but that was a fair point, too. "As long as you get there's a difference."
"I do," she said. "On a logical level. But when I realized that she was coming back, I tried to run, because I couldn't bear to lose you all again like that."
He refrained from pointing out that she would have lost them anyway.
"And then I didn't," she said. "And then I realized that you actually liked her. You have jokes together, you like fighting alongside her, Ralph thinks she's sexy. "
"Ralph tried to hit on a lamppost the other day," he pointed out. "Just saying."
"And in that case, what's the point? What's my reward for fighting down the worst parts of myself, if it isn't to keep my friends?"
"Look," he said, taking her hands. "You're going to have to figure that out yourself. I think the past year has shown that no outside influence is going to work to get a handle on Killer Frost. Power-dampening cuffs, solar necklaces, whatever it was that Black gave you - none of that, on its own, is ever going to be a permanent solution. You've got to get a handle on her yourself, for yourself, because it's the best thing for you. But while you're doing that, here's something I think you should keep in mind."
"What?"
"We like you," he said. "We like you when you're being smart and cheerful and helpful, yeah. But we also like you when you're snarly and mean, or sad, or upset. I like you. You don’t have be perfect to be our friend. You just have to be you." He waved at her up and down, trying to encompass her entirety. "Everything you are."
She swallowed hard. "Thank you."
"Anytime," he said, starting to go back to the dampener cuff. He paused. "By the way, your mom is wrong."
She looked up. "My mom?"
"Yeah. When she told you all that stuff about how nobody likes little girls who aren't sweet and nice all the time."
"Oh, Cisco, My mom didn't tell me that."
He blinked. "Who did, then?"
She shook her head, smiling at him a little. "Nobody had to tell me. All little girls know that."
"Well, they're wrong," he said.
She tilted her head. The smile got sharper; colder. "Are they?"

what percent alcohol is moonshine
what percent alcohol is moonshine
Hello dear friends, thank you for choosing us. In this post on the solsarin site, we will talk about “ what percent alcohol is moonshine “. Stay with us. Thank you for your choice.
Here’s How Much Alcohol Is Actually In Moonshine
You probably know moonshine as the dangerous alcoholic drink that was made popular (and made illegally) during Prohibition. You might even know it as the alcohol that’s strong enough to power a car, thanks to the movie Lawless – and moonshine actually can get your motor running if it’s over 75 percent alcohol by volume (via Slate). However, with so much bad press regarding its dangerously high alcohol content, it might surprise you to learn that moonshine is not only widely available today but also no more dangerous than other high-proof alcohols (via Wide Open Eats).
The amount of alcohol in moonshine…
The amount of alcohol in moonshine differs depending on the distillation process, but in the United States, moonshine can’t legally be distilled to more than 80 percent ABV, and can’t be bottled at more than 62.5 percent ABV, and many are much lower than that. For instance, Midnight Moon brand moonshine sells versions that range from 30 percent ABV to 50 percent ABV (via Midnight Moon). Keep in mind that vodka is generally 40 percent ABV, gin is between 35-55 percent ABV, and Everclear is between 60-95 percent ABV (via Alcohol Rehab Guide). For more understanding of how moonshine got such a dangerous reputation, it might help to have a little bit of background knowledge about this historical hooch.
The true dangers of moonshine
During prohibition
During prohibition, unregulated moonshine wasn’t only dangerously high in alcohol content (at about 75 percent ABV);
7 Liquors You Should Be Drinking And 7 You Shouldn’t
Sometimes, all you can do is make a guess (based on what, the pretty label?) and hope for the best.
That, or grab for the same thing you pick up every single time.
There are some giant misses, too, and whatever you do, you don’t want to show up with those.
Read on for the liquors you should definitely be drinking, and the ones you should ban from your liquor cabinet.
Do drink: Old Fitzgerald
Pick up a bottle of Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond, and you’ll get a decent bottle for bottom-shelf prices. There’s a little bit of honey flavor, a little vanilla, and a lot of oak.
Quick Answer: What Is The Percentage Of Alcohol In Moonshine??
To power a car, moonshine—in this case, illicit homemade whiskey—must have an extremely high alcohol content, at minimum 150 proof (or 75 percent alcohol by volume), or 190 proof for best results.
Which alcohol has the most alcohol content?
10 Alcoholic Drinks So Strong They Can Knock Out The Manliest Of You
Pincer Vodka (88.8% Alcohol)
Balkan (176-88% Alcohol )
Good ol’ Sailor Vodka (85% Alcohol)
Sunset Rum (84% Alcohol)
Devil Springs Vodka (80% Alcohol)
Bacardi 151 (75.5% Alcohol) What alcohol is 92 proof? Is there a drink that is 100 alcohol? Can you make 200 proof alcohol? what percent alcohol is moonshine
Answer: Proof is defined as twice the alcohol (ethanol) content by volume. For example, a whisky with 50% alcohol is 100-proof whiskey. Anything 120-proof would contain 60% alcohol, and 80-proof means 40% of the liquid is alcohol.
Spirytus Delikatesowy – 192 proof (about $20) This dangerous and legendary Polish vodka, approved by the New York State Liquor Authority just four years ago, is nearly 100 percent pure alcohol, and believed to be the strongest liquor for sale in America.
Does moonshine get you drunk?
The alcohol in moonshine is the same as that of beer, wine, gin, etc. Pick your poison, and it’s the same alcohol. It is called ethyl alcohol, or ethanol, and it’ll get you drunk–some faster, some slower. Shots of Tequila tend to get downed much quicker than a 12 oz. bottle of beer.
There is no such thing as 200 proof moonshine. The strongest concentration you can make of ethanol by distillation is about 191 proof. Alcohol “likes” water, and at concentrations higher than 95.6%, it absorbs water from the air until the solution is 4.4% water.

How much alcohol can kill you?
The lethal dose of alcohol is 5 to 8g/kg (3g/kg for children)6 – that is, for a 60kg person, 300g of alcohol can kill, which is equal to 30 standard drinks (about 1 litre of spirits or four bottles of wine).
How many beers equal a shot of whiskey? what percent alcohol is moonshine
beer has as much alcohol as a 1.5-oz. shot of whiskey or a 5-oz. glass of wine.” One ounce of beer contains less alcohol than one ounce of spirits, but the standard serving of beer is a 12-oz.
What alcohol is 200 proof?
Ethyl Alcohol
Is beer betterthan liquor?
Hard liquor is distilled and contains more alcohol by volume than Beer or wine. It gets you inebriated quicker and doesn’t contain much else. If you are drinking Beer, all else being equal, dark beer is better for you than lighter beers due to the fact that it has more antioxidants in it.
How strong is moonshine?what percent alcohol is moonshine
There isn’t anything inherently dangerous about moonshine — at least no more dangerous than any other alcoholic drink. When made properly, it is simply very strong alcohol with a very hard taste, or “kick,” because it hasn’t been aged. It is usually very potent, as high as 150 proof, which is about 75 percent alcohol.

How strong is 80 proof?what percent alcohol is moonshine
There is, however, such a thing as 80 proof. If a liquor is 80 proof, it contains 40% alcohol. The proof is essentially just double the number of the alcohol content. Therefore, a 100 proof liquor is 50% alcohol and 200 proof would be 100% alcohol (but don’t drink pure alcohol…yikes).
What’s the highest proof of moonshine? what percent alcohol is moonshine
151 and Up: The Highest Proof Liquor
#6 Bacardi 151 — 151 Proof. The well-known Puerto Rican brand of rum, Bacardi, sells a 151-proof bottle that is 75.5 percent alcohol.
#5 Balkan Vodka — 176 Proof.
#4 Hapsburg Gold Label Premium Reserve Absinthe — 179 Proof.
#3 Bruichladdich X4 Quadrupled Whisky — 184 Proof.
#2 Everclear — 190 Proof.
#1 Spirytus — 192 Proof.
Can moonshine kill you?
Ethanol contains two carbon atoms and is somewhat toxic (it’ll kill you if you drink enough of it, so pace yourself) whereas methanol contains one carbon atom and is highly toxic (can cause permanent damage to the optic nerve and death even in fairly low doses, pacing won’t help, best to avoid altogether).
Is Moonshine stronger than Everclear?
Everclear is 190-proof. Let me make that clear. By comparison, most rum and vodka clock in between 40% to 60%, or 80 to 120-proof. As of right now, Everclear is deemed the strongest alcohol on earth: chemistry doesn’t allow anything stronger than 191-proof to exist.
Can homemade moonshine kill you?
“It’s very, very toxic, so even a small amount–just 10 milliliters of pure methanol–can cause blindness,” says Dr. Bruce Goldberger, professor and director of toxicology at the University of Florida College of Medicine. “But just a few ounces of methanol can kill.
How much moonshine can I make legally?
While most states prohibit home moonshining, state laws sometimes conflict with federal law. In Missouri, for example, a person 21 or over may produce up to 100 gallons of spirits per year for personal consumption without a permit.
What’s the difference between ABV and proof?
Alcohol proof in the United States is defined as twice the percentage of alcohol by volume. Consequently, 100-proof whiskey contains 50% alcohol by volume; 86-proof whiskey contains 43% alcohol. For example, 50% ABV would be described as “100 proof” rather than “100 degrees proof”.

“Bootleg liquor” redirects here. For other uses, see Bootleg (disambiguation) and Moonshine (disambiguation). Not to be confused with Moonlight.
Moonshine is high-proof liquor that was and continues to be produced illicitly, without government authorization. The name was derived from a tradition of creating the alcohol during the nighttime, as to avoid detection. Distilling such spirits outside a registered distillery remains illegal in most countries.
In recent years commercial producers increasingly label some of their products as “moonshine”
BATF’s manpower was devoted to alcohol taxation enforcement. But with the increase in the price of sugar, moonshining has gone out of style and the BATF.

Provide PURELL PEACE OF MIND
"Hand sanitizers are not guaranteed to keep you totally protected from the spread of any disease --they don't really expel a myriad of microbes but are still powerful in reducing some variety of these," states Dr. Williams. "So, it is usually great to keep the hands wash, wash them with soap and water, and then maintain a jar of hand sanitizer on standby as a way to cut back the sum of germs you happen in contact by touching things."Stay Clear of Wooden alcohol hand sanitizerHand-sanitizer, nevertheless more potent following its expiration day, will nonetheless kill some germs. "It's completely secure to use even following its expiry date however won't be as effective in removing germs as a fresh pile," says Dr. WilliamssaidDoes expired  perk hand sanitizer still get the job done? The quick answer is: Yes, hand-sanitizer does perish. You should find an expiration date in the tag or listed around the base of the container.
For example an overthecounter topical antifungal products, hand sanitizer is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), also is necessary to either have a published expiration date or have a shelf life of three decades ago That means if you can not locate a expiration date on your jar of hand sanitizer, you need to assume it will expire about three years once you purchased it.Utilize clean operating water (it may be cold or warm ) to damp your arms before soaping up.In case you aren't able to scrub your hands, that's when hand-sanitizer becomes quite a more valuable substitute antiseptic. Pick an alcohol-based who has hand sanitizer in stock near me , and also yet one who has a alcohol content of at least 60% (you may assess this to the tag ).
In the event the focus is under 60%, it may not kill because many types of germs or can only decelerate the rise of germs in place of eliminate them. Just like Hand Washing, there is a Appropriate Means to utilize Hand-sanitizer, as Stated by the CDC:Rub your hands with each other, coat every surface area (remember that the springs! ) ) Until the gel has dried. That could definitely take approximately 20 seconds.Dry both hands on a fresh towel let them air dry. What causes hands sanitizer to expire? With the years, alcohol evaporates from hand-sanitizer services and products, cutting back the potency, explains Robert Williams, MD, a family medicine doctor and geriatrician in Lakewood, Colorado, and a medical adviser for eMediHealth. "If Leasing a house setting, then follow with your authority's coverages for disposing of flammable fluids."Rinse your hands. If both hands possess observable dirt or grime or have are in touch with a hazardous chemical (for instance, pesticide, for instance), you might desire to clean them with soap and water--hand sanitizer will not become described as a very helpful disinfectant in those circumstances. In the struggle illnesses, handwashing should be your very first field of defense,'' says Dr. Williamssaid These illnesses may consist of gut bugs and parasites like Clostridium difficile, cryptosporidium, along with norovirus.
Fun truth: October 1-5 is International hand-washing Day!"washing the hands with soap and water is the goto solution to lowering the amount of germs on the hands," he says. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) agrees and recommends a five-step strategy to appropriate Hand Washing:Methanol isn't an acceptable component on hand sanitizers, and also the FDA is continuing to inquire into the matter. Brands like Eskbiochem, 4E world wide's Blumen, genuine Clean, and more have needed services and products remembered. To observe the most recent set of recalled hand sanitizers, see the FDA website for up to date details. "It's thought expired once the quantity of the sanitizer's antibacterial representative falls below 95% of its own stated degree," says Dr. Williams.Hand sanitizer vs. Hand WashingIn June 20 20, the FDA issued a warning to people about the risk of methanol contamination. "Methanol, or wood alcohol, is a chemical which may be poisonous when absorbed through your skin or consumed and can be life-threatening when ingested," the statement explained.
The issue in hand is that a number of hand sanitizer services and products have been labeled to comprise ethanol, or ethyl alcohol, but are analyzing positive for methanol contamination.Recall, handwashing is necessarily best, but hand sanitizers have their place.Squeeze or pump the advised level in to a palm.H sanitizers an average of fall into two categories: alcohol and non-alcohol dependent. The FDA now allows promotion of ethyl alcohol (most common) and iso propyl alcohol since alcohol-based sanitizers, and benzalkonium chloride as a non-alcohol established sanitizer. Sanitizers using a alcohol concentration between 60 percent and 95 percent are considered the most effective. But that alcohol could dry your hands out with repeated use (so don't forget to moisturize!) . Non-alcohol-based sanitizers on average contain benzalkonium chloride because of their active component.
These sorts of hand sanitizers do the job and therefore are frequently milder on the epidermis, but they are not considered as efficient as alcohol-based sanitizers.Scrub for 20 or more seconds, or the same of singing the"Happy Birthday" song two occasions.Lather, for example, back of one's palms, beneath your claws, and among your palms. When you are prepared to discard your older or expired bottle of hand sanitizer to get a brand new one, be certain to're doing it safely, says Kristi C. Torres, Pharm.D., a member of the SingleCare health care Review Board in Austin, Texas. Can hand sanitizer die? Whether you're concerned with influenza and cold season or the new outbreak of coronavirus disorder 2019 (COVID-19), you've likely discovered that washing your hands have turned into the most efficacious means to safeguard from germs.
If soap and water are not available,  usa corona virus is your next best form of hand cleanliness to continue to keep your family healthy and safe. But is that old Purell rattling about under the bathroom spout still powerful enough for the on-the-go cleanup? Or in case you stick to bottles that are fresh?"In case you utilize sufficient of it to wash your palms, it is going to lessen the variety of microorganisms on them," he says. "however it's always wisest to scrub your hands using water and soap ."

Herbal Based Hand Sanitizer
Hand sanitizers are a typical thing in our work areas, in our pockets, in the supermarkets, and every other place where we are regular. Hand sanitizers fight the microorganisms, infections, and pathogens that are hazardous to our overall health.
However, that leaves us with numerous questions. Which hand sanitizer works the best? Is herbal based hand sanitizer better than non-herbal sanitizers?
Alcohol-based sanitizers are extremely popular because they eliminate germs, microorganisms, and infections. However, for complete beauty lovers, the ideal choice is an herbal hand sanitizer that contains all the natural components, which can provide protection and can maintain the nourishment of the skin at the same time.
Tumblr media
The natural hand sanitizer is a composition of skin-loving, soothing, and infection or pathogen killing ingredients. The most well known antibacterial ingredients are tea tree and aloe vera. But nowadays, other components are also being added to the developing demand for hand sanitizers.
Some people are more attracted to alcohol-based sanitizers, as they are recommended by WHO, while others are sticking to natural or gentler sanitizers for regular usage.
Most Common herbal hand sanitizer components:
·         Tea-tree oil: Tea tree oil is a proven solution over and over to kill infections, microscopic organisms, fungi, and mold. Tea tree oil has natural antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and soothing properties.
·         Neem oil: Neem leaf has numerous antibacterial, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties and is used in natural sanitizers around the globe. Neem kills 99.9% of germs, guarantees proper hygiene, and prevents disease.
·         Aloe Vera: Aloe vera gel gives nourishment and moisture to help balance the drying impacts of alcohol. Aloe Vera adds some thickness to your hand sanitizer for easy and more viable application on your skin.
·         Tulsi oil: Tulsi being astringent in nature, tulsi benefits skin by absorbing the abundance of oil and moisture makes herbal sanitizers non-sticky, pure, and safe.
·         Alcohol: It's essential to ensure any hand sanitizer you use should contain a minimum of 60% alcohol. Studies have discovered that sanitizers with less alcohol or non-alcohol based hand sanitizers are not as powerful at eliminating germs as those with 60 to 95 percent alcohol. The FDA additionally recommends that hand sanitizers have at least 60% alcohol. Hand sanitizer with a higher liquor substance can be more costly, yet the organization says don't buy the sanitizer with below 60% alcohol. Only two alcohol is allowed in alcohol-based hand sanitizers – ethanol (ethyl alcohol) or isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol or 2-propanol).
If you need a sanitizer that doesn't make your hands harsh and protects you from the unhealthy environment, herbal hand sanitizer is your best option. Herbal hand sanitizer is a combination of natural items, which can do no harm to your skin and can provide the soothing effect that your skin always needs to maintain moisture. It is ideal for individuals who pay attention to sanitation and freshness.
Herbal sanitizer ensures that your hands stay soft and delicate and gives you healthy skin. They are available in a small pack or big cans as per our requirements. And without much of a stretch, convenient when in need of delicate and fragrant hand cleaner. Due to the increasing demand for hand cleaners, they are available as 100ml-5litre hand sanitizer bottles or can.

Extract craft turbo - What happens if you put isopropyl in it? and can you use it to distill alcohol to then use for extracting? via /r/CannabisExtracts
Extract craft turbo - What happens if you put isopropyl in it? and can you use it to distill alcohol to then use for extracting?
Hello all,
I have the extract craft turbo. I don't mind it but wish the capacity was higher. I understand you can get larger capacity ones though, but they are expensive and not available in Canada. The box and instructions say right on them to only use 95% ethanol, and though it may sound stupid, I am really curious what would happen if you used other compounds, but don't want to risk breaking my machine. I can't foresee any issues unless the solvent used had a flash point near the boiling point of ethanol, or there was toxic residue left behind. I was considering isopropyl alcohol as the boiling point is only 2°C higher than ethanol and it is way cheaper and easier to get ahold of. Though I get that at its price you might as well just keep getting more instead of reusing it. I like the convenience of having the extract boiled down in a manner where you can walk away and don't have to worry about fumes, fires, burning the product, or explosions. I was also considering just brewing up some alcohol, and just using the extract craft to concentrate it as I wouldn't need to watch it compared to a still, then using that same alcohol to extract. To get ahold of a bottle of 95% Everclear is around $100 after shipping where I am as my province doesn't sell it and it has to be shipped from far away. My province is also very strict about giving out ethanol permits to people for tinctures and food safe cleaners and sterilizers. In theory, If I used Turbo yeast, sugar, cornstarch, and water to brew up to 25% ABV (ideal conditions), could I use the extract craft to concentrate the alcohol (maybe run it through twice to get double distilled), then use said alcohol to extract?

CO2-based vodka startup Air Co. fully redirects its tech to making hand sanitizer for donation
An NYC-based startup that developed technology that extracts carbon dioxide from the air and combines it with water to create vodka has redirected its entire production capacity towards producing hand sanitizer, every bottle of which will be donated through collaboration with NYC officials, and potentially to local restaurants who employ delivery personnel providing critical service as social distancing and isolation measures continue.
Air Co. launched its vodka just last year, using a process it developed (which has received awards from NASA and XPrize) that is actually net carbon-negative. It involves pulling around one pound of carbon dioxide from the air which is then combined with water and turned into pure ethanol using solar-based renewable energy. Ethanol also happens to be the key active ingredient in hand sanitizer, which is generally between 60 and 95 percent alcohol in its most effective iterations.
Air Co’s CEO and co-founder Gregory Constantine told me via email that since the company was founded on the basis of fulfilling a mission of social good, the startup wanted to find some way to help with community efforts to counter the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. It naturally turned to producing hand sanitizer made up 70 percent ethanol, its technology’s primary output.
The company isn’t looking to cash in on the current (ill-advised) panic buying trends, which see supplies of hand sanitizer sold out or dwindling across major retailers and Amazon . Instead, even though it’s now directing 100 percent of its production capacity to making hand sanitizer, it’s also donating all of the volume it produces.
While Constantine says that initially, they’ve been producing smaller volumes than they’d like, and are looking at ramping production by shifting their methods, they’ve still managed to put out over 1,000 50mL bottles, and will “continue to make 1,000 bottles per week and push supply as much as our technology allows us to.”
I asked Constantine how they’re figuring out who receives the hand sanitizer they’re donating, given the many possible parties who would appreciate this kind of charitable action.
“We’re going to be directly supplying all donations at the advice of the city,” he said. “We are also looking to work with local restaurants to have them provide food delivery drivers with our sanitizer given that bars and restaurants have had to shut their doors to patrons, leaving delivery services at the forefront of food services here in New York City.”
Given that they’ve have shifted production away from their revenue-generating business for this effort, I also asked Constantine how long they plan to keep this up. Despite uncertainty about how long the need will exist, he said, they’re going to try to continue producing the sanitizer “for as long as [they] can.”
“We have shifted our production and are running on a very limited team to ensure that we are not furthering the spread of the virus in our efforts,” he added. “Every small piece of help from any person or business goes a long way in a time of need like this, and we plan to help however we can.”

All right fellas... Time for some SCIENCE
I’ve been thinking about doing this for awhile and have finally decided to sit down and (likely badly) explain how that rocky alcohol from chapter 4 of the Firefly AU could work.
Now, bear with me because this will get long, but also keep in mind that brewing science, microbiology, ecology, climate science, chemistry, and physics are all not my field of expertise (hell I don’t even have a field of expertise, I’m just a humble lab technician with a biology degree) but I will do my best here.
Now then let’s get started with the basics.
Anaerobic Respiration through Ethanol Fermentation.
Fermentation reactions are used for making everything from biofuel, alcohol, and cheese, and are generally the less preferred pathway for making energy. They are typically defined as an ox/redox reaction that results in energy and a byproduct from breaking down sugars using enzymes. The one I’ll be looking at is one that produces ethanol specifically, and goes a little something like this:
C6H12O6 (sugar) --> 2C2H5OH (two ethanol) + 2CO2 (two carbon dioxide)
Now, compared to other energy producing cycles, this one sucks, and is only really used when other cycles are unavailable but sugars (glucose is preferred, but xylose, sucrose, cellulose, lipids, and starch all work too) are abundant. The byproducts of this reaction (the ethanol and carbon dioxide) are actually often toxic to whatever is using this process... which is why we use stills, centrifuges, genetic engineering, and bioreactors when we are trying to take advantage of the cycle.
Most organisms that undergo Ethanol Fermentation are microorganisms (yeasts and bacteria) but some genetically modified plants can undergo the process (and give us biofuel) and so can some fish (because reasons). For alcoholic beverage production, both yeast and bacteria are often used and each have their pros and cons.
The basic necessities for delicious alcohol production are an abundance of simple sugars (or at least an enzymatic way to break complex carbohydrates down), a good environment, and some specialized genes. Which means it’s time for some world building to create the best bioreactor.
Now, according to the description of the planet in chapter 4, most of the oxygen was found in deep valleys and ravines lining the planets surface with a toxic, unbreathable atmosphere above. The microorganisms responsible for fermentation lived underground and the drinkable alcohol came up from natural springs, and had a metallic and almost earthy taste. This could be possible if the atmosphere was made up of a mixture of air (oxygen and nitrogen), and let’s say methane, with some carbon dioxide, most of which would need to be in the cave systems (to keep it anaerobic). The atmosphere would more than likely have some extra stuff in very low concentrations, so let’s focus on these for now.
Based on density of gases, methane is less dense than air (let’s base the ratio of oxygen to nitrogen on our own planet just to make the planet mostly inhabitable) and would thus tend to be a little bit higher in this hypothetical planet’s atmosphere. If we say these planetary wide ravines and valleys are super deep and this planets atmosphere is a smaller size than ours, this would give us our toxic (at higher concentrations or where it displaces too much oxygen) and unbreathable atmosphere (where you would also not want to light a match). Arguably that might make landing a spacecraft a bit difficult since you’d have to be wary of accidentally exploding, but I did say it would be hard to get this liquor and exploding certainly makes things difficult.
Now that our atmosphere is vaguely established, the next step is sugar (which is always my favorite step). Sugar, specifically glucose makes life go around. Literally. Living things love breaking down sugar (since, you know, it is fuel), but they also love making sugar and use it for all sorts of things (at least they do on Earth). So let’s assume that what we got here is good enough for this hypothetical planet and assume that life there is also a series of proteins, DNA, carbohydrates, and lipids in various arrangements.
“Life finds a way” isn’t just a pretty phrase. It is highly accurate, and so it’d be no surprise to find a thriving ecosystem in say- an underground cave system. We have plenty of models here on Earth to choose from as well- but our main focus is finding stuff that can be broken down into sweet, sweet sugar.
Now on Earth, most of what we use for ethanol production is plant mass due to the high concentration of cellulose, maltose, and sucrose which are all found in plants. Now, finding a plant in a cave is... well kind of weird. Plants typically rely on photosynthesis for their sugar production, utilizing various pigments to convert sunlight and CO2 into glucose and O2- however life always finds a way.
And that is unfortunately often found through the form of parasitism.
It’s hard to imagine a plant being a parasite but we are, in fact, about to celebrate a holiday in which one is very prominently displayed so...(hooray for mistletoe). Parasitic plants tend to develop ways in order to feed off other plants, usually by siphoning nutrients straight from the roots of their victims. If there are plants able to thrive in the valleys of the planet, parasitic plants might be able to leech off their roots. It might be tough to get through all the stone between surface and cave, but there is also another way.
Decomposers and detritivores are often overlooked, but play a truly important role in breaking down and recycling organic matter. Often the role falls to things like fungi, bacteria, larvae, and worms, but there are some plants (such as some orchids) that fall (albeit loosely) into this category. The term is “myco-heterotrophy”, in which there is a plant+ fungus relationship that is not always mutually beneficial. Overall it’s a pretty cool set-up, but I won’t go into too many details because this would get 10x longer.
Between saprophytic plants and parasitism, plants have found ways to thrive without sunlight, and if we fill these cave systems with consumers (such as bugs and fish), saprophytes all vying for detritivore supremacy (yay poop-eating), decomposers like bacteria and yeast all hard at work cleaning up the aftermath... well that would vaguely take care of our food sources.
These microorganisms will, of course, need the appropriate genes to be able to break down less simple sugars (starch, lipids, cellulose) as well as ones that will let them turn that sugar into ethanol. Arguably this is the easiest part, as such genes are pretty common. What is a bit more tricky is finding genes that allow for tolerance. Alcohol tends to have a low pH, making things a bit more acidic, it also can act as it’s own inhibitor as well as being toxic in high concentrations. Inhibitors are things that can cause a process to stop- which is why having a high tolerance for both acidic environments and high concentrations of alcohol would be key.
Now having a steady flow of diluent (a solution that dilutes) would help with the accumulation of too much alcohol, which takes us finally to the good stuff. Alcohol is typically mostly water by volume (beer is a good 95% water), so a spring that is actually water (or in this planet’s case, fancy mineral water) washing that alcohol away into a spring would work just fine to keep concentrations from being too high.
Now, depending on how mobile or immobile the fermenting microorganisms are can affect the actual alcohol taste and production. This can take the form of natural aggregates (clumps) formed through flocculation (an actual brewers term, wow!) in which all the microorganisms sort of bunch up and then fall out of solution and become a sediment at the bottom of wherever they are. The second form is through something like a sponge, where bacteria or yeast can get trapped and the solution can still move through. The third form is just free-floating microorganisms.
If the microorganisms clump together, not all of the sugar will be converted into alcohol, but it will be less dry and strong as if they are all suspended. If the microorganisms are stuck in a bioreactor, they can produce way more alcohol. No matter which of the three, the end result would still probably be a very fancy mix of alcohol, mineral water (due to erosion and to fulfill the taste requirements in the chapter), and given the production of CO2, carbonic acid (carbonation).
Long story short, cave crawlies and weird stuff got broken down in a cave full of mostly CO2 and very fancy mineral water and turned into ethanol, where it sprung from the surface of a mostly inhospitable and slightly flammable planet in bubbly springs and then some truly adventurous people would try it and decide it was good enough to drink. Some time later, Guido Mista would try some and go, “yeah this is weird but not too bad,” and buy a bottle for the road.

⚡No Rubbing Alcohol 💥CDC WHO 🥃 EverclearGrain Alcohol (Vodka) DIY Hand Sanitizer
Everclear grain alcohol, aka vodka, is getting the most attention of late, for use in do-it-yourself hand sanitizer recipes now that no rubbing alcohol is to be found. (Find WHO CDC formula in this video.)
Where to find - at AMAZON -the hand sanitizer ingredients listed in this video:
*Protective goggles ►https://amzn.to/39u7jZj
***Rubbing Alcohol 99.5%► https://amzn.to/2W2Ct6b
*Pure pharmacy grade glycerin►https://amzn.to/2TuPZhb
**98% glycerol ►https://amzn.to/2VR9Poq
*3% hydrogen peroxide ►https://amzn.to/32WwIZ5
*Four cups or 1 quart mixing bowl ►https://amzn.to/3auphuJ
*1 quart mixing bottles ►https://amzn.to/3axuWAu
*Travel size spray bottles ►https://amzn.to/38vU9JT
This is mainly because Everclear is available at 190 proof.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is clear that a hand sanitizer needs to be alcohol-based, and that it must have a concentraion over 60% per volume, to be most effective. 75% is even better.
The CDC further says that, in the healthcare industry, alcohol can be used to refer to two different chemical compounds:
Ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) and isopropyl alcohol (or rubbing alcohol).
In general, the ethanol or ethyl alcohol in spirits such as vodka and grain alcohol,is an effective antiseptic when it is 180 proof or higher. And, when it is mixed with water and an evaporative substance such a pure glycerin.
To calculate the percentage of alcohol per bottle of grain alcohol, you would divide the proof of of the liquor in half. At 190 proof, the alcohol base for a homemade mixture of hand sanitizer comes to 95% alcohol.
Using Everclear grain alcohol, the World Health Organization formula,  to make one quart of homemade hand sanitizer at CDC 75% alcohol concentration, would be:
- 3 and 1/4 cups of Everclear.
- 3 Tablespoons of 3% hydrogen peroxide.
- 1 Tablespoon of glycerin.
Plus enough water to water to make a total of 4 cups, or 1 quart.
See our previous video on the WHO DIY hand sanitizer for full instructions.
Everclear is bottled at 120, 151, 189, and 190 U.S. proof so be sure you are getting 190 proof, when you purchase.
Everclear is produced by the American company Luxco. Luxco also manufactures two other brands, Golden Grain alcohol and Crystal Clear alcohol, as essentially the same spirit with a different brand name.
In the event that Everclear sells out, there is also Devil’s Creek Vodka at 151 & 160 proof- but you will have to adjust the home made recipe accordingly.
You can order these alcohols online. Do a search and there are many distributors that will ship to your doorstep.
