my brain has really been out here fixating on the myth of narcissus and echo lately, because honestly... yes, i'm not about to say that he isn't a selfish guy. but — BUT — i think that the reputation he's often given by people as being narcisstic is incorrect, not only since he was cursed to fall in love with his reflection but since whenever he did; it's noted that in the myth, narcissus had no idea that who he was looking at in his reflection was actually him.

narcissus thought he was someone else. and thus, although i ain't about to defend him, i think that things are a little more nuanced than the man simply being obsessed with himself. and therefore, i am now seriously thinking about making an account featuring my own retelling of the myth and/or putting my own twist on it. one in which, instead of narcissus dying due to him being cursed to look at his reflection until he eventually perishes, someone actually shows him mercy and he has to deal with the unintended consequences of causing the death's of not only one — but TWO people (echo and ameinias) + having to adjust to being visually impaired / potentially blind as a part of nemesis's punishment upon him (i learned through research that keeping your eyes open for an extended period of time without blinking can actually cause damage to the cornea's quite quickly).

and, of course, narcissus also having to deal with his one big problem: that he's selfish + he can't keep on treating people whatever way he wants to.
