i think the mysteries of udolpho would make for a really fun high budget tv series if done right. but if they did ever do it they would probably cut out most if not all of the times emily faints/swoons which is really tragic to imagine. even contemplating it is... it's too much... i'm starting to feel dizzy... *collapses weakly onto my settee*

#i think the first time she faints (at least notably) is when her dad accidentally shoots valancourt. because she's so upset that he's hurt #and both her dad and valancourt immediately abandon the GUN SHOT WOUND in favor of fussing over poor passed out emily #the moment that happened. i knew. this is gonna be a novel.#perfect world faithful to the text udolpho adaptation allows for an 'emily swoons' drinking game to exist #they'd have to cut out the bit about emily refusing to elope though. she just has to leave for italy before the two can escape #that's one of those things modern audiences just would not find virtuous or sympathetic
