#this reference forever fascinates me so i added a couple other punk rock references from nyc in the 1980s <3#i think a lot of post-crisis jason's aesthetic involves some signifiers that aren't very obvious to us now#but imo 80s nyc comic writers seem v much inspired by the lower east side & the bowery & punk rock#somewhat relatedly one thing i find forever fascinating about the invention of post-crisis jason#is that he gets created right after miller's dark knight returns#and in dkr the Bad Guys are The Amoral Youths Of Today - violent teens w/punk haircuts who attack batman in an alleyway#they terrorize the city & it's a big plotpoint that they have no moral code or motives - they're just violent for no reason#like. they're clockwork orange kids#and jason is practically a Take That response - like. he's superficially similar in style:#he's violent he's got a crowbar he's stealing tires he listens to punk he smokes he's got a chip on his shoulder etc etc etc#BUT BUT BUT unlike the dkr teenagers who he closely resembles - the point of jason is that he's secretly sympathetic#he SEEMS like a Bad Punk Rocker Kid - the anger issues! the violence! the attitude! the taste in music! the clothing!#BUT ACTUALLY he's only like that because he's defensive & he only steals because he needs to eat etc etc#like. at every turn you get similar superficial behavior BUT contextualized by sympathetic motives#jason todd
