Ultimately I think autism speaks canada closing is a positive but it comes in the context of multiple canadian autistic advocacy groups shuttering in the past year and avenues for funding for these groups being discontinued I would not say it is especially comforting!
#Autistics united canada and Aspergers Society of Ontario both went defunct in the summer#As you might guess based on its name I didn't have particularly fond feelings about the latter group anyway#they did rebrand to ASO but continued to focus on level 1 autism which I don't really think is the best way to go about autism advocacy#Likewise the organization I was working for that has had a major avenue of provincial funding cut is one that I have mixed feelings about#and feel they do not sufficiently serve autistic adults despite overtures at serving autistic people throughout our lifespans#but autistic children do need that support and less of it is there now!#healthcare is provincial in canada so while support for autism is better in some places than others#Nowhere is it sufficient so Yes I do not want autism speaks to be our voice#But with frankly the best known autism organization ending operations#I am not confident that other organizations and autistic individuals will be positively impacted
