26: a book you had to read in school and ended up loving
ooh THANK you for asking this because it gives me an excuse to ramble about mrs. dalloway
i was assigned it in high school and now it’s probably hands down my favorite book. there’s just more to discover every time you go back to it, the prose and themes are just gorgeous, AND the main character is an (arguably) bi woman, which i was astonished and very glad of when i read it in my (girls’ catholic) high school. literally obsessed with that book and mrs. dalloway’s relationships with her husband and sally
honorable mentions: white teeth by zadie smith, the violent bear it away by flannery o’connor, sula by toni morrison
#richie-goldfarb#thanks britt!!#ask#ok also this reminds me that i saw a Wild modern adaptation of mrs. dalloway in madrid#i liked it but they changed a key part of it for me#they changed it so that richard is an absent husband and clarissa is a closeted lesbian who can't get over the fact that her daughter's#dating a woman#which. hits HARD in its own way but i honestly adore richard and clarissa's relationship in the book#like that scene where he's too overwhelmed to say he loves her so he just hands her the flowers and she gets it anyway . . .whew#sorry i just love this book a lot
