me feeling re: ff16 now that i've finished it is that i wish that if it was just going to end on a classic jrpg Killing God With The Power of Friendship trope that it had committed to being that kind of story the whole time instead of doing its asoiaf impression. i don't think it succeeds at creating a world that is particularly politically interesting, the fantasy racism and slavery storyline was often questionably handled, and when it does hit on genuinely compelling interpersonal conflicts in its main political players (i.e. the clive/joshua/dion/anabella situation) it fails to capitalise on it. i thought the game was at its best when it focused on the gang at the hideaway and if it had emphasised that ragtag group of underdogs vs the world angle and embraced its cliches instead of dressing itself up in a poor imitation of a much more complex story it would have been better off
#blahs#ff16#i don't really think any single video game could ever be as sprawling as asoiaf and it was probably a mistake to try#but even then it's more shallow than some other jrpg worlds which is the really ironic part#the closure to the world's political situation is in a boring missable side quest at the end. crazy#and it's kind of all over the place character wise too#there's things that seem like they probably looked great in the outline but they're not really realised properly in the actual game#we could've gotten SO much more out of dion. but his story is so rushed and sparse after his eikon battle#there's an interesting parallel there between him and clive's past guilt at destroying rosaria. this is never brought up!#they and joshua never really talk about their mother together#and don't get me started on jill
