I can finally reblog this because of the addition, because back in my day tropes weren't as pervasive in fanfictions. And this was in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom...tropes as we know them today were literally this fandom's fault...Sure there were domestic alternate universes (when the canon has magic or sci-fi but the fanfiction doesn't) that sometimes started in coffee shops, or post-canon future fics that would indicate that in the summary, what if everyone were a hardboiled noir detective, but it wasn't this ingredients list that rivalled the blurb in traditional publishing. If I didn't like other writers taking away the magic of Lord of the Rings characters and aging them down and sending them to an American high school because that was the writer's life...and I didn't, precisely because at the time high school every working day was my life, so where's the dragons and wizards to take me away from all this...then I could scroll on to find it.

When there were notable tropes, I actually found them on the now-ancient ruins of LiveJournal being discussed.

Trope: Duplicating the entire script of Titanic but with Jack's and Rose's names replaced by your hetero favorite pairing. Discussion: What is the point of this, nothing changes about this but the names.

And it was always bloody Titanic. One time I saw that it was Casablanca, but that one actually melded the worldbuilding and characterizations or character roles together.

Trope: Ecological phases and the Migratory Slash Fandom. Discussion: Despite apparently having plenty of activity in the 1960's due to The Premise, my experience of fandom in the early Y2K was that slash fanfictions were rare and discouraged. There was a hub of fanfiction critics over at the Pitas blogging platform, one of which took the entire text of A Final Fantasy VIII slash fic for commentary and criticism—because that was very common to do, see also the Plot Protectors Continuum, and "giving a bad fic the MST3K treatment"—and the criticism for that specific one as I remember it went something like, "This fanfiction is decently written but still deserves sporking because the writer made everyone in it gay". Sporking was the public reposting of fanfiction with unsolicited commentary and criticism for every line and story beat, and lettuce me repeat, multiple online cliques were doing this and garnering meta-fanbases of their own by doing that. You wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me. It wasn't considered bad representation or whatever of gay boys, back then, either, it was considered automatically a bad piece of writing only because it had non-canon gayness in it.

[ I want to interrupt this program to bring you a message from my brain rot: If you're sick of reading gay boys written by women, then Fraternity by Andy Mientus is right here if you want a gothic horror-fantasy set in 1991 and 1992, and I recently read Middle of the Night by Riley Sager that I think is the perfect summer mood-read. I personally have also been getting a lot into The George Miles Cycle by Dennis Cooper, but none of you are going to like what's written in it. My pen pan from the gay who is U.K. and a cis boy also keeps recommending David Levithan's books, so look that up too and tell me which is the best one to start with. Classic lit that's gay by gay: Maurice by E.M. Forster, and Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin. I prefer Richard Siken's social media presence to his poetry, please don't kill me to avenge his honour SuperWhoLock fandom Richard Siken is still alive look he's fine he's written wincest and destiel he's doing fine i just don't like poetry that isn't Sonnet 121. Zac Farley said he liked Siken's poetry collection, surely Siken doesn't need me to like all his stuff. "Visible World" was one Siken poem that I liked. Dr. Thomas Baudinette's non-fiction is on my TBR.

So when I hear or read in 2025CE that something like A Little Life is fanficcy only because (Trope:) too many characters are gay with each other and that's contrived (Willem, Jude, and posthumous third wheel J.B.) and not because of the pacing or descriptive prose reading as slipshod, or that Saltburn is a bad movie for the sole reason that more than one bisexual person under one roof is "unrealistic", or that the relationship between Anne Lister and Eliza Raine is woke propaganda for being sapphic and interracial in Regency England and that's too many diversities (my brother in devil's sacrament, that historically happened as in real life history. They were roommates,) then I flashback to Pitas in the year 2000 and can't believe that we are still having this conversation. Discussion: That gayness is nothing more than a "trope in bad fanfiction" as though gay people aren't real that's just something Casey McQuiston invented to sell books and movies? Casey McQuiston's success is new, and slash fanfictions are far more pervasive now, but the attitude of these detractors has seemingly not changed in 25 years.

One thing that has changed, and I think for the worse, is...

Trope: Mary Sue. This character type pre-existed its parody in the year 1973 (Star Trek fan zine), as an original character put into fanfiction pastiches to make fanfiction readers angrier than if they'd accidentally read The Premise and didn't want to. Discussion: Now the criticism of Mary Sues is recognized as primarily misogyny—The unapologetic power fantasy embodied by a fictional woman triggers the patriarchal urge in readers of all genders to get her writer back in line by shame and ridicule, because of internalized patriarchal bootlicking. Woman Happy Bad. I disagree that this was the only point to the criticisms of a Mary Sue, so I think more substantial discussions about it have fallen by the wayside. To make Mary Sue sound less like jargon, these were called "author self-inserts" but I was lucky enough to be in a fandom where people talking about this trope had more intellectual honesty—Every character that a fanfiction writer writes, even the ones from canon, will carry through something of the writer. The reader can never accurately figure out which aspects those are, but pretty much every writer will feel it flowing out. These are all unintentionally "author self-inserts" a little bit, then, and so hating on the Mary Sue trope because it's the author putting something of themselves into the story...didn't make sense either.

What I figured the real reasons for a Mary Sue to get so criticized were: Other characters act out-of-character whenever she features, and there would be no thematic central conflict.

Fanfiction readers back then wanted more of the same thing that they liked from the source material: characterization that included flaws and emotional responses to living in too-interesting times; and thematic exploration if not thematic fidelity. Lacking both of those, at least have a good prose-writing style—I read a Lord of the Rings fanfiction with an original character that had this Alice in Wonderland motif in the plot and it was touted as "a GOOD Mary Sue fanfiction??" but it was mostly the obvious care taken in having a purposely florid writing style that I think saved her from sporking.

TL;DR version (too late), every trope can be examined, deconstructed, and explicated into something meaningful.

If it seems that readers of fanfic and origfic alike are not doing that...because we did that back in my day, because it was fun to talk about tropes' narrative purposes and character voice and correct punctuation...then, why not? Is the post-pandemic economy so stressful that fiction is the only escape, and so readers swear vengeance upon works of fiction for being anything but escape? I don't think I can fix that by grumbling about the Kids These Days and their fanfiction tropes, but above paragraphs are my grumble.

Yall i dont think im gonna be able to stop thinking about usha and g13, actually.

Ushas an old old woman, clueless with tech. Lived long enough to develop various bonds with a LOT of people and relies on them a lot for help. In turn, shes VERY loyal to her close conpanions (a great example would be how she tends to back paula up a LOT, the way she sets up russel and paula to 'fake date' wink and all). She's very warm and very emotionally intelligent even if she's a bit clueless sometimes. Her logic is borderline incomprehensible, but it has heart.

G13 on the other hand, is a hacking prodigy. Hes young, hes sought after for his skills for better and for worse. But in turn, he's essentially lost himself in the process. He may be able to scrape nuke codes, but he'll never make a friend. He lacks any loyalty for anyone and anything except for himself and his interests, and if they dont satisfy those two points, then its worth nothing to him. His logic may be sound, but its cold.

I never noticed until now that the skull chain thing prominent in Komaeda's official art:

is actually barely visible in most of his fullbody sprites.

The only times we see a lot of the chain is when he's really rattled, and even then we never see the whole thing.

That feels symbolic to me. He's had a life surrounded by trauma, trapped in his luck cycle, leading him to psychologically chain himself to a harmful ideology to cope. Post chapter 1 he's open about the morbid parts of his worldview- and under other circumstances he's open about things like his relentless paranoia, since it's so normal to him- but the more vulnerable parts of him? Those he doesn't advertise. You have to peel back some of his layers to see those outside of the rare occasions his vulnerabilities surface, and even then it's really hard to get the full picture. Do any of us, really?

As an alternative interpretation, there's an interesting comparison to be made with his outfit as Servant, too, as both include a chain willingly worn and tethered to nothing. Both versions of him present themselves as passive and subservient but actually crave importance and control, but Servant is way more blatant and extreme about that- and likely more self-aware about it, at least when comparing him to Komaeda pre-chapter-5. Servant's chain is much larger and in a more prominent and degrading place.

At the bus stop one time there was a gaggle of preschoolers waiting to catch the bus for a field trip day, and someone walked past with a couple of friendly little dogs, to great general delight.

But after a little bit, the dogs were getting overwhelmed, and the preschoolers were gently coaxed to back off so the person with the dogs could continue on. Specifically, one of the preschool teachers said, "Sometimes, when you're small, being surrounded by big people can be a bit scary and overwhelming. Even if they are friendly."

This was recieved as great wisdom: after all, the preschoolers were also small, and understood how scary and overwhelming big people could be! And the dogs were indeed even smaller than the preschoolers, so it made sense.

What was funny and charming was that, upon absorbing and reflecting on this wisdom, they all felt the need to tell it to one another. In tones of great insight, they turned to one another and said, "Did you know? Sometimes when you are small, being surrounded by big people can be scary and overwhelming! Even if they are friendly!" Back and forth, without any particular concern that they were all saying the same thing. Have reached comprehension of an insight, it must be shared!

I must say that this behavior is less charming in tumblr users than in preschoolers. Not least because tumblr users, having gained a little analytical skill to misuse, insist on Summarizing and Generalizing and Unifying the insights they repeat, quickly turning any interesting new information into formulaic dogmatic mush.

I don't understand why fans in general are always so against critical analysis & always try to defend characters whenever someone points out bad writing. Bsd fans have huge issue like that I'm glad you're so vocal about dazai character writing tho cause lots of people just avoid it due to his fans taking it so personal

I think it’s mainly an issue of people not properly tagging their posts, so that when people search their favorite characters, they find negativity instead of the positive content they were hoping for. It makes sense why that would be annoying— but in the end of the day it’s everyone’s job to curate their own internet experience.

I tag all of my negative posts with #anti dazai, so it’s pretty easy for a person to just block that tag (or block this account), and so most people don’t have a problem with me. I’ve only run into any sort of problem with two separate tumblr users in the past (one of which is pretty infamous in these bsd tumblr circles)— so from my end of things, I don’t really see all the people getting angry about character-critical content. I know it’s out there, I personally just don’t come across it very often.

I also block very liberally, so that might be a contributing factor to why I don’t see that side of the fandom. But either way.

I’m glad you’re enjoying this blog!! For any given piece of media there will be positive aspects and negative aspects, and everyone can and should feel free to talk as much as they want about both sides. There also isn’t a single right answer— meaning one person could find a character to be written in a very compelling way and someone else can find the character writing shallow— neither person is wrong, so long as they can justify their opinions with textual evidence.

The only time a media interpretation is wrong is when it’s entirely made up. And I don’t mean “this person read the text and came away with a different conclusion than me,” I mean “this person is directly contradicting the text and is giving no reasons for why they might think the text is lying.” There’s always the concept of an unreliable narrator, but on tumblr, the website that’s infamous for lacking any sort of Reading Comprehension… yeah you’re not gonna get the brilliant literary debates everyone’s hoping for.

Also: stop putting words into the mouths of creators?? It doesn't even matter whether the creator supports a ship or not, but using the canonicity/creator's opinion to disregard other ships is just kind of .. definitely a side-eye, at the very least. Do you even know what fanfic is for?

If a creator posts as a character saying they don't like something, that is not the creator speaking.

Sure, the creator might share the same opinion- that is, unless the creator explicitly states that he doesn't care. That is the creator speaking. Listen to that.

so i didn't know i had tumblr savior installed until i finally looked up a fix for why tumblr on browser would never show usernames on posts and it turns out tumblr savior was causing it but this is how i also discovered why every now and then i'd see a "this post has been hidden because mention of: TRUMP" post. like i guess i just thought tumblr was automatically hiding any posts that mentioned trump like that was just a quirky new feature implemented in the time since i'd last used the site.
