The Descended - Hidden Chronicles of Teyvat Act 1

this theory was made a while ago on my twitter you can read it in your native language PTBR here

This thread is the first part of a series of long theories, if you don't know me, I'm the akaseven graphic designer who does a lot of services (fixed prices) and guides for the community and in my spare time I pile up crazy theories so get ready, get one snack so lets go!

The Descended is the scientific nomenclature the irminsul and the fatui use for those who do not belong to the world of teyvat, those who originate from there and it all started with the first who came, the infamous primeval god known as phanes... but there are another name

Nahida calls him the Celestial Principle (which will have a thread of his own in the second part of this saga of theories) he being the first was the founder and practically creator of teyvat as we know it today, he was the one who shaped this world and who created the archons and celestia !

In summary (to be detailed better in the next thread) phanes (the celestial principle) completes its creation in teyvat, using the body of sovereign dragons and thus humans. however one day a second that came, fell on teyvat causing a war and chaos... Years and years later we would have the third and fourth that descended, Lumine and Aether the twins who visit worlds and happy to explore one more world would not expect to find their intertwined destinies broken and trapped in a world full of secrets... which will be revealed !

Well, so far is everything clear? all canone...BUT things aren't quite like that, we discovered that supposedly lumine is not the third DESCENT, would ether have descended alone? Why do we have these travelers? because phanes did all this who is the second throne? prepare for the twist!

So I believe it is much simpler. Travelers are interdimensional beings who work to maintain order and verify that all infinite worlds derive from the great irminsul so well and pose no danger to nearby worlds.

Despite looking very Marvel vibes, we have the clear interference of a mysterious character called K.K who on several occasions seems to know who each one is, including the two travelers! Assuming that we have an Irminsul Security Agency, we also have patents. Patents that can be configured as an observer, explorer or founder... yes dear I'm saying that the primordial, lumine aether and the second throne ARE OF THE SAME RACE AND WORK FOR THE SAME AGENCY! shocking, right? And there's more, as in every agency you need laws, one of the main ones I believe was to confirm if the honkai (energy that consumed worlds and corrupted others) would not have leaked out there, the job of an explorer, a dimensional traveler is precisely to confirm this! BUT...

as GUARDIANS of these infinite worlds they should not disobey any order, even if their rank is a founder... teyvat works as a kind of ark, this term has appeared before! honkai impact brought about this type of project, which is basically saving human knowledge, its genome so that it could be used on a habitable planet. In this Phanes is nothing more than the PIVOR of Genshin >Impact< TOTAL double meaning!

Genshin is nothing more than hybrid beings, capable of reaching the divine level! Phanes as a founder breaks any possible law, mixing the human genome with primordial dragonlords, killing them and occupying teyvat aggressively and madly without any apparent reason... why?

It has a simple and basic reason, Phanes is as human as his creations, his selfishness and ambition blinded him to think that the only way to avoid future chaos was to abuse and steal bodies, magic and technology from this world! What he didn't expect was that he had an abysmal neighbor.

Teyvat belongs in an assumed space that contains a veil that separates the realm of light (where the elements and rulers came from) and the realm of emptiness, the realm of emptiness is a home to monsters but especially to a force that seems to be completely interested in absorbing the light! Phanes understood this, manages to create his ark and, knowing the consequences, completely detaches himself from the past, transforming his ship into a large island for his gods and future archons, uses magic from the irminsul and even from other worlds to create his shadows but a second falls from the sky, the one that the people of enkanomiya talk about the resemblance to phanes, as they belong to the same race. phanes then battles with him so that the truth is not revealed to the people and even that he returns to the agency! fzd chaos appear in teyvat and divide your nation

seeing some I read that it would be possible that the second throne is the same as the tale of the seelie, where in summary it says that a traveler from another world fell in love with that race and brought chaos, if that is the case, the second throne did not directly hit with the phanes, tried to live with the seelies but the phanes did not accept starting the war. already in the future new travelers fall into teyvat, twins who have already passed through other worlds, who possibly work for the dimensional agency arrive in teyvat with only the idea of resting until the truth is revealed…

you see, knowing about the lumine twist made me break my head, I even considered a kind of retcon and to fit it all in I was watching and reviewing and thank you to EdvardNeto and ViniPedrozaS from twitter for the good idea and also a great feat to fit lumine into all of this without leaving anything with holes! THEN First you need to know two things, the perspective of the Aether is supreme, it is not interfered by timetravels or samsaras in teyvat (like nahida and inazuma tree) another detail is that irminsul can be CHANGED as it happened in the case of the Greater Lord!

With that and for that reason I believe that YES LUMINE IS THE THIRD DESCENT but this information was modified on irminsul purposely here I tell you what may have happened. Lumine and Aether arrived together in teyvat, but for some reason the aether was unconscious!

something happened to lumine while the aether slept but it is with complete certainty to say that she participated in great events in khaenrar that culminated in her DEATH! The sister of the aether actually DIED something or someone killed her but at the same time she seemed to know it!

Somehow the consciousness and soul of the lumine is passed down to irminsul (as the greater lord does) and so a primordial body is made in khaenriah to contain that soul, fitting in with what nahida says that the lumine simply appeared in khaen that's at least her fact is on irminsul. This is what causes the khaenrah war, phanes understands that they broke the greatest possible primordial law, getting the knowledge and technology to replicate someone of their own race and still connect it to irminsul, with that the new lumine is blamed for the what provoked.

So lumine wakes up the brother who doesn't know half of what happened and they try to escape when one of the main celestials (shadows of phanes) prevents that new anachronism from leaving teyvat, after all she now belongs to that world and the aether is a stranger

however nahida insists that the luminine is linked by a kind of powerful entity that always changes its destiny, because supposedly she would have already explored teyvat before the death of her original body and her death was altered ON PURPOSE

who could change time? make irminsul configure if lumine as non-descended replaced by another name? Istaroth is one of the most possible entities that could have interfered here and made Lumine come back to life through the tree, changing all the data!

at the same time she forces her other sister (asmoday) to prevent them from fleeing, taking her cloned brother because probably istaroth may have seen teyvat's future and knew that he needed the aether's interference as a traveler and lighted her from the side of the abyss to avoid something worse!

with that we have the world of teyvat interpreting that lumine only sprouted in teyvat and went to the side of the abyss while the aether knows the true timeline that was changed by istaroth or another entity, anyway the original body of lumine was killed and she now use another! see that there is no way you can create a clone of a person who did not appear in this world! ah n be by paradox, if the original line is the two falling in teyvat and somehow the lumine is thrown in the irminsul if it deletes or replaces the dice of the third throne by another one being born in teyvat it is created as a bootstrap paradox, it sprouted without having a proper origin based on the world's POV!

in conclusion because the entities are betting on the aether and what is the interest in the traveler... curiously the name of the second who came is not second throne by case, it is possible that any traveler can dethrone the phanes of his immense throne in his and the Aether it's meant for that! as in the quotes he will supposedly ascend to heaven taking down phanes and celestia and now knowing the possibility of the death of lumine's body we have the big plot twist, Dainsleif questions if the aether will be able to save her something he couldn't...

Your eyes desperately survey the dim room, searching for a way to escape from this strange man who magically appeared in your bedroom. There’s no possibility of reaching the door without alerting him to your motives, nor is the window even an option since your apartment is almost nine stories up. You’ll need to come up with a different plan… Even if it means fighting your way out. 

“Look, I know it’s hard to believe—” 

You glare incredulously at the stranger, curling further into your bed to create more distance between your forms while hissing, “Jackson Wang died years ago, so unless you have some logical explanation or something, then I’m going to kindly ask you to get out of my fucking apartment before I call the police!” 

“I do have a logical explanation!” The man insists as you take another glance at your surroundings. If you play your cards right, you might be able to grab the tea mug off your nightstand, throw it at the stranger, and while he’s distracted, make a break for the door. If anything, the noise will hopefully wake up Sana… 

You snap out of your thoughts when you notice the man beginning to approach your safe perch. Deciding now is better than never, you lurch forward to grab the cup and heave it toward the stranger with all your might. However, the object merely soars straight through the man’s head and shatters against the opposite wall with a loud crash. He continues to stare at you as if nothing even happened. 

A choked breath slips past your lips. “What… the fuck…” 

“I tried to tell you.” The man raises his hands, as if to promise pacifism, and literally slides one arm inside the closed door of your closet, “I am Jackson Wang, and I am dead… but you’re still somehow able to see my spirit.” 

“So you’re… a ghost?” 

He nods. 

You narrow your eyes, still suspicious. “If you’re Jackson, then how did you die?” 

“I was killed.” 

“By who?” 

Jackson tilts his head, “Mark never told you…?” 

Your shoulders slightly loosen at the mention of your witch best friend, but you still remain on your toes in case you have to grab and weaponize your lamp. “How do you know about Mark and I?” 

“Because I’ve been watching you guys.” Jackson’s eyes widen. “Shit—that sounded really creepy. Think of it like… a guardian angel? Kind of?” 

“What?” 

He waves his hands as if expelling the idea before moving on, “If you’re a supernatural being, and you die, your spirit doesn’t really cross over like a mortal would. You’re kind of just… stuck in this place of limbo called the Other Side.” 

“But how are you able to be here? And how can I see you?”

“Spirits can attach themselves to people or objects, and use their energy to stay in the land of the living.” Jackson shrugs, “As for how you can see me, I have no clue. I’m honestly just as surprised as you are.” 

You bite your lip, trying to configure whether he’s telling the truth. If only you had asked Mark to describe Jackson back in the cave, then maybe you could have matched up his appearance. But all you have to go off of is this ghost’s words… which for the most part, seem genuine. And he hasn’t tried to hurt you—big props.  

“Okay. Let’s just say I believe you for now,” You start before quickly raising a stern finger to point your companion, “but I have tons of questions. For starters, why the hell are you in my room?” 

“I don’t really know.” Jackson grimaces, rubbing the back of his neck. “It sounds really weird, but it was like I was drawn to you…”

“Drawn to me? You mean like a magnetic pull or something?” 

He nods. “Exactly. But I really don’t know why. Maybe it has to do with how you can see me.” 

Feeling hot, you shove the heavy blankets from your body and embrace the newfound cold air against your bare skin. An exhausted, baffled sigh escapes as you bury your face in your palms, hoping to calm the throbbing in your head. Your thoughts are too wild though, and you end up meeting Jackson’s gaze in a matter of seconds. 

“So am I supposed to play Ghost Whisperer and help you cross over…?” 

“I don’t think so.” You fight off the urge to flinch as Jackson collapses onto the end of your bed with a deep huff, “But whatever it is, it’s really nice to have someone to talk to…”

“Are you alone? Like can you talk to other ghosts?” 

“I can, but it doesn’t happen very often. A lot of people on the Other Side can be pretty… intense.” 

To your dismay, your heart yearns for him. You grew up on your own after all, so you can understand what it feels like to be lonely.

“You never answered my question from before.” You say after a brief moment of silence, “...Who killed you?” 

Jackson’s eyes are dark as he thinks over your question, almost hesitating to give you the answer. While he’s debating with himself, you take the time to study his features. Now that he’s sitting entirely in the light and you’re able to see everything. 

You’re not surprised you mistook him as a human, because there’s literally no physical detail that reveals his ghastly nature. Unlike the ghost stories you’ve known, his skin is dark like honey and not transparent, while his lips are slightly chapped and hued the palest of pinks. His hair is a mocha-type brown with a couple sun-kissed caramel highlights, complimenting the sharpness of his handsome features. 

In summary, he looked no less human than another man. Although probably a bit more on the attractive side. 

“It’s honestly a long and complicated story.” Jackson says after a while, yanking your attention away from his well-defined jawline. Even so, you still continue to stare as he leans back to lay on your mattress, staring up at the ceiling with a blank expression. “I should really tell you everything from the beginning.” 

“It’s not like I’m going anywhere at…” You peer at the clock above your closet, “3 AM. We’ve got plenty of time to talk.” 

He shakes his head, “It’s not that easy. I can’t stay on this plane for too long, or else some of the witches on the Other Side will pull me back.” 

“How long do you have?” 

“Honestly… seconds.” The ghost forces himself back to a sitting position in order to better face you, “We’re technically not supposed to cross into the plane of the living. I’ve been caught a couple times before, so the witches have been keeping a close eye on me.” 

You furrow your brows. “Why don’t the witches want you over here?” 

“Because they’re afraid of upsetting the balance of nature. You’ve talked to Mark a little about that, right?” 

“He mentioned it once or twice.” You watch as Jackson rises from your bed and begins to head back to the corner in which you first saw him. He catches your gaze when he turns back around, offering forth a small smile. 

“Sorry for scaring you, by the way.” He chuckles. 

You shrug, your own lips upturning slightly. “It’s not everyday you talk to a ghost.” 

Jackson nods at your response before glancing toward the mounted clock. It’s subtle, but you manage to catch the slight flash of worry that overtakes his bright irises. When he turns his attention back to you, however, the concern is gone. 

“I don’t know when I’ll be able to return, but in the meantime, I want you to go talk to my pack.” Unlike beforehand, Jackson’s tone is scarily serious. Though it still contains remnants of his unusual gentleness. “They’ll tell you the basics you need to know to start. And, (Y/N)?” 

“Yeah?” 

Jackson’s eyes soften. “I don’t want Mark to know anything about this, okay? You’ll understand better when you hear the story.” 

“Of course.” You thumb at a loose thread along the seam of your pillowcase before shaking your head toward the ghost, “Before you go, can you at least tell me who killed you?” 

“Like I told you, it’s complicated…” He sighs, “But if you have to know, the Prime Two had a hand in my death… specifically Jaebeom.” 

You don’t know what you were expecting, but it certainly wasn’t the name of the ancient hybrid. Still, it surprises you, and it doesn’t. Given the tension all between Mark, the pack, and Jinyoung and Jaebeom, it actually kind of makes sense. But what about the conflict that Changbin hinted at? Or Jaebeom’s bitterness with Mark? What has everyone been keeping from you?

So many puzzles pieces, yet no clue how to fit them together. 

“I have to go now, but I’ll come to you as soon as I can.” Jackson’s urge brings you back to reality. “Just do what I said and get as much info as you can, okay?” 

You nod. “I’m on it. See you soon, I guess?” 

Jackson smiles again. “See you soon, (Y/N).” 

You open your mouth to say something further, but in the literal blink of an eye, Jackson is gone. Just vanished into thin air. If you didn’t know any better, you swear you hallucinated the entire conversation… but after all you’ve witnessed in Moon Dye Bay, you do unfortunately know better. 

With a groan, you fall back into your pillows, although the exhaustion from before is long gone. You doubt you’ll be able to fall asleep anytime soon, so you rise from your bed and set out to clean up the broken pieces of the mug you threw at Jackson only minutes before. 

Guess having tea before bed comes in handy sometimes.

Steam wafts through the tiled bathroom, gathering in a blanket of fog along the glass walls of the shower. Jaebeom releases a sigh of relief as the hot water beats against his bare back and shoulders, massaging the tension from his muscles and soaking the rest of his naked body. To gain better access to the stream, he leans forward and presses his hands against the fogged glass for support. Less he wants to slip and fall. 

Jaebeom peers down to watch the water spill down the drain, tinted red from the blood decorating his skin—Jinyoung’s blood, to be more specific. His mind immediately rushes back to the memory of his brother calling out for help in such agony and pain. He wanted to ignore it. He tried not to care. But then Jinyoung called out his name… what else was he supposed to do? 

Jinyoung deserved a lesson for getting involved in witch business again, but Jaebeom couldn’t just sit back and let him suffer through the hallucinations of their hell of a childhood. He curses himself for giving into such weakness and angrily scrubs away the patch of dried blood on his forearm. 

Maybe if you hadn’t looked at him with those bright, horrified eyes of yours after he left the room… then maybe his inhumanity could have won the battle over his sanity. 

Jaebeom continues to clean himself as his thoughts wander like the steam of the shower. Jinyoung’s fever broke earlier, so he should sleep much more soundly for the next few hours or so. His body will need time to heal, more so because of his stupid, anti-human diet. Maybe Jaebeom will be able to finally convince the pretentious prick to hunt with him after all these years. Or at the very least, drink from a blood bag. 

A faint noise that sounds vaguely like footsteps awakens Jaebeom from his shower-thought reverie. He squints through the shower door, trying to see past the curtain of steam. The bathroom is vacant save for the blurred image of his own reflection. Even so, something still proceeds to urk at Jaebeom’s senses, like an itch he can’t scratch. 

There’s someone here. 

It only takes milliseconds for Jaebeom to corner the figure that sneakily crept inside the shower with him and press them against the tiled wall. A little, feminine giggle emerges from the intruder as the hybrid cages them between his arms and broad chest. His nerves immediately calm at the devious face that stares back at him, instead earning a loud sigh of annoyance. 

“You’re lucky I didn’t rip your fucking head off.” 

“Mhm. I know how… rough you like to be.” 

Jaebeom provides the female an unamused expression. “What are you doing here, Tzuyu?” 

“Come on. I know you’re happy to see me.” Tzuyu flashes Jaebeom a radiant smile that resembles one of a temptress. Because of their position underneath the showerhead, her dark brown hair is already soaked. He also quickly realizes that she is just as naked as him. “I can’t just drop by and see my most favorite person in the world?” 

“You and I both know that’s a lie.” 

Tzuyu smirks. “That you’re my favorite person in the world, or that you’re happy to see me?” 

“What do you think?” He begins to pull away from the female vampire, but she stops him with a tight arm around his neck. Before he can blink, Tzuyu’s lips are pressed firmly against his own. Her sweet taste invades his brain like a parasite, and he can’t help but melt into the kiss, hungrily pushing his tongue past the seam of her mouth to find more of her delicacy. 

When she pulls back, Jaebeom almost growls. He lowers his hands to tightly grasp her waist before pressing her even further into the wall with his own body. In an effort to make up for the loss, he busies himself by sucking and nibbling along the canvas of her throat. His pride swells when she moans at a particular nip. 

“A little eager, aren’t we?” Tzuyu mocks, deviously brushing her knee against Jaebeom’s gradually swelling manhood. His body thrums at the brief contact, quickening his abuse against the patch where her jaw meets her neck. 

“You’re the one who interrupted my shower, remember?” He abandons her throat to trail a hand up to her breast, roughly pinching at her taut nipple and smirking at the low groan that bubbles in her chest. “If anyone’s desperate here, it’s you.” 

“Touche.” The vampire arches her back more into Jaebeom’s alluring touch. The hybrid welcomes the newfound access, dipping his head down to take one of her buds past his lips. Tzuyu releases a faint whimper before burying her fingers in his wet locks. When she harshly tugs against his scalp, Jaebeom responds with a warning growl. 

He detaches from her nipple and chuckles darkly, “We also know that you are the one that likes it rough.” 

“Maybe I do.” Tzuyu’s smile is dangerous. “So what’s the big, bad hybrid gonna do with a helpless damsel like me?” 

Jaebeom relishes the squeal of surprise that flies from her lips as he lifts her body in the air, tying her legs around his waist with a smirk. “I can think of a couple things…” 

Just as soon as the words are spoken, the muffled ring of the doorbell distracts Jaebeom from his lustful rendezvous. He releases a frustrated groan, carefully lowers Tzuyu back to the floor, then shuts off the water. The vampire follows him as he exits the shower, watching intensely as he towels off and slips into a loose pair of sweatpants. 

“Stay here.” Jaebeom says before taking off, quickly making his way through his bedroom, downstairs until he reaches the front door. Shaking out his still rather wet hair, he opens the door, prepared to tear apart whoever interrupted his moment. 

However, all his anger vanishes into thin air at the visitor on his doorstep.

His eyes widen to saucers. “(Y/N)?” 

“Jaebeom.” The animosity along your features falters when you notice his bare chest. You clear your throat before locking your gaze with his own. “How’s Jinyoung?” 

Jaebeom’s mood deflates. You’re here for Jinyoung. Not him. 

“The worst is over.” He replies truthfully, “He should be back to full health in the next few hours or so.” 

“I’m sure he could have been better a lot sooner, but whatever, right?” Jaebeom decides not to drop the fact that he actually did heal Jinyoung. Besides, even if he wanted to, your voice would have beaten him to it, “Anyway, I’m here because I need to know what happened to J…” Confusion invades his veins when your voice suddenly cuts out. He notices your gaze on something over his shoulder, internally cursing himself for already knowing what it is. 

“Who’s this pretty, little thing?” Tzuyu sidles up beside Jaebeom, eyeing your speechless form from head to toe. Her hand slithers to lazily rest on his tricep, but the hybrid can spot a symbolism of claim anywhere. And judging by the strange look in your eyes, so can you. 

“I thought I told you to stay upstairs.” 

“And miss meeting your human pet? How could I ever?” 

Jaebeom shoots the vampire a warning look. Tzuyu innocently bats her eyes. 

“I was actually just leaving.” You say, tearing Jaebeom’s attention away from his devious companion. He wants to say something further, maybe ask you to stay a little longer, but you’re already tugging your bag further over your shoulder and backing away from the door. “Tell Jinyoung that I hope he feels better, ‘kay?” 

Jaebeom shakes his head. “Sure, but (Y/N)—” 

You’re already walking away before he has the chance to finish his sentence. Jaebeom watches your form until it disappears inside a car, and even then, he watches the car until it drives past the entrance gate of the estate and out of sight. A strange, empty feeling remains in his chest, as well as the beginnings of annoyance and rage. 

Tzuyu leans forward to litter light pecks across his bare shoulder. “Should we… get back to where we left off?” 

Jaebeom slams the front door shut with a pound before pushing past the vampire without so much as a response. Tzuyu’s sigh follows him as he makes his way into the living room where he heads straight for the liquor table. He begins to pour himself a drink while Tzuyu situates herself against the doorway. Even with his back to her, he can feel her piercing gaze staring into his soul. 

“She seemed nice… (Y/N), was it?” 

Jaebeom downs his first glass of bourbon before shaking his head, “Drop it, Tzuyu.” 

“So I’m not allowed to learn about your other girlfriends? Though I have to say, I’m surprised you’d ever go for a human.” 

“It’s not like that.” He answers, glaring at the pouting vampire from over his shoulder. “She’s a friend of Jinyoung. We’ve only met like twice.”

Tzuyu smiles. This time it doesn’t spark arousal through Jaebeom’s body. It strikes fear. 

“I saw the way you looked at her, Beomie… I wasn’t lying when I said she’s a pretty thing.” 

Her tone of voice sends warning bells through his chest. 

Jaebeom hisses darkly, “Stay the fuck away from her, Tzuyu. I mean it.” 

“I would never lay on hand on your fragile human, Beom.” Something about the way her eyes gleam leaves an uneasy feeling stirring through his chest. That, and the way she looks down to check her nails with a sinister smirk. “Though I’m sure it would be so easy to cut out that sweet tongue of her—” 

“Tzuyu—” 

“Just kidding.” The vampire leaps from her perch against the doorway to steal the drink from Jaebeom’s hand. He watches her warily as she skips toward the window, staring out on the estate courtyards as she sips at the alcohol. Though her back is turned, Jaebeom can practically feel the cogs turning inside her head. 

He only hopes she keeps true to her words. For your sake.

The purr of the car engine blends with the hum of your cell phone receiver. With each ring that passes, the trees outside the window grow more and more abundant while the hope within your heart only becomes less and less. You sigh when the familiar monotone message clicks across the line. For a moment, you debate on whether or not to leave yet another voicemail… It’s not like she’s answered the dozens you’ve already recorded before. 

The little hope that remains outweighs your logic. “Hey. It’s (Y/N) again. I don’t know if you’re not getting my messages or just ignoring me, but… I’m really worried about you, Jihyo.” You bite your lip, readjusting your grip on the steering wheel before steering the vehicle onto another branching, dirt road. 

“Sana was really shaken up last night and things are just kind of screwed up right now—for fucksake, Ji, please just pick up your goddamn phone and call me!” You end the call with a lot more force than necessary, tossing your phone into your open bag resting on the passenger’s seat. In order to calm the frustration bubbling through your veins, you focus your attention on the winding road ahead. 

After somehow managing to acquire the location of the werewolf pack’s hangout from Bambam, Sana agreed to lend you her car. She needs some time to cope, especially with Momo and Mina’s “sudden disappearance”, so she’s taking the next couple of days away from work at Moon Dye Bay’s local cafe. 

You thought it would be wise not to drop the real bomb about her high school friends when she was already wrecked over Jihyo’s walk-out, and while you hate lying… what choice do you have? If you tell Sana the truth, then you’d have to also tell her how and why Momo and Mina died. And with that, you’d have to tell her about the bay’s secret society of witches, werewolves, vampires, etc. 

Disgust filters through your body as you’re reminded of your less than awkward visit at the Project Estate. The fact that Jaebeom is able to fuck one out of probably very many of his pretty call-girls while his best friend endures the worst of all sicknesses right down the hall just rubs you all the wrong ways. Maybe that whole speech about his humanity from Jinyoung was one big hoax to get you to feel sorry for him, but you refuse to do so. 

You also refuse to linger on how that woman you saw with Jaebeom was one of the most beautiful women you’ve ever seen… and how it settles an uncomfortable pit in the depths of your gut. 

At the sight of the cabin, you push all thoughts from mind and maneuver the car to pull up in front of the large residence. It surprises you how abandoned and poorly-taken care of the outside of the cabin is, considering Bam said that everyone in the pack basically lives here. Then again, if one of your closest friends and packmate was killed out of the blue, you wouldn’t care much about appearances either. 

After cutting out the engine and grabbing your bag, you exit the vehicle. Bird songs and the buzzing of mosquitoes welcome you as you make your way up to the front door. You almost trip over a loose board on the cabin’s wraparound deck, but you manage to catch yourself before you slam nose first into the wooden ground. Just as you’re about to lift your hand and rap your knuckles against the door, a familiar voice seizes your attention: 

“(Y/N)? Is that you?” Dahyun emerges from around the side of the cabin, carrying a homemade, woven basket full of wet laundry. With a hand on her hip and a raise of her eyebrow, she continues, “You’re the last person I expected to see today… Did Mark send you?” 

“No, no.” You shake your head, “I was actually hoping to talk to Chan, or maybe Yugyeom about something?” 

Dahyun offers a sympathetic smile. “Sorry, hun. Everyone’s out today except me and some of the youngsters.” She pauses to support the basket against her hip. “Is there anything I can help you with? If you’d like, we can talk while I take care of these clothes?” 

“That would be great actually.” You agree, returning Dahyun’s bright smile with a weak grin of your own. The werewolf nods and gestures for you to follow her with her free hand, which you do so without any complaint. 

Once you turn the corner, your jaw almost drops at the sight of the backyard. Unlike the front of the cabin, which looks so unkempt and depressing, the back is the total opposite. It almost reminds you of a mini oasis, with the tiny pond full of flowered lily pads and the bushes of vivid, flourishing roses. Twinkling fairy lights hang from branches of trees, and you can only imagine how pretty it would appear at night. 

You and Dahyun pass a couple of other strangers playing Uno at one of the few picnic tables stationed around the massive yard. One of them, a young dirty-blonde teen, looks up as you walk by and offers a kind smile, which you can’t resist to return. 

Dahyun hums, “That’s Felix. Chan’s little brother.” 

“Really? I didn’t know he had a brother.” 

You take a seat on a mossy tree stump, watching as Dahyun sets down her basket and begins to hang the wet laundry along an already prepared clothesline. After staring for a few moments, you climb back to your feet and move to help the werewolf. 

She grants you a grateful smile and shrugs, “Most don’t. Felix hasn’t triggered his gene yet.” 

“His gene?” You repeat, pinning a large, black T-shirt onto the line. 

“Oh right. You probably don’t know much about wolves yet.” Dahyun peels open a moist towel and continues, “Basically, we’re born with this gene that has to be ‘triggered’ in order for us to activate our werewolf abilities.” 

“So the whole werewolf bite or scratch thing is a myth?” 

“One hundred percent bullshit.” She laughs. 

You chuckle as well, before inquiring further, “How do you trigger it?” 

Dahyun’s laughter immediately cuts out. Thinking you said something wrong, you open your mouth to reconcile, but the wolf beats you to it. Her tone nowhere near as light-hearted as before: 

“You have to… kill someone.” 

Your stomach twists, butterflies of revulsion fluttering all the way up to your chest. You notice how Dahyun no longer tries to meet your eyes, instead fully investing her attention in wringing out the dripping wet mass of fabric before pinning the corners to the line. 

“It’s usually an accident for most of us though.” She shrugs with a faraway expression, “Sometimes we just lose control of our emotions and things get out of hand… then somebody ends up dead, and you turn the next full moon. Whether you meant to or not.”  

You reach over to place a comforting hand on her elbow. “I’m so sorry… That sounds horrible.” 

“It’s just the world we live in.” Dahyun seems to snap out of her traumatized state and throws a slightly awkward smile in your direction, “Anyway, once your gene is triggered, you turn into a wolf every full moon for the rest of your life.” 

“Do you have control when you turn?” 

“Not exactly. Our werewolf form is like a totally different part of us.” 

You nod in understanding. At her guidance, you begin to take down the clothes that had dried beforehand while she finishes hanging the last of the remaining laundry. Once the last garment is pinned to the clothesline, the werewolf takes a seat in the grass and moves to begin folding the dry batch. You do the same. 

“Now with all that aside, what was it that you wanted to talk about?” 

“Oh. Right.” You bite your lip, trying to come up with the best way to bring up a dead Jackson without striking a personal chord. After a moment of silence, Dahyun must notice your apprehension, as she drops the socks in her hands and leans forward to lightly pat at your calf with a patient smile. 

Her kind facial expression alone is enough to evoke a slight wave of bravery from your soul: 

“Well, I was wondering about… Jackson Wang.” You say carefully, keeping your eyes on Dahyun’s gradually faltering smile. 

The werewolf leans back from you with a heavy sigh before releasing a soft chuckle, “It’s been a while since I’ve heard that name. Though I’m a little surprised… I thought Mark would have told you all about Jackson by now.” 

You shake your head. 

“Jackson was our first Alpha, before Chan took over. All of this actually belonged to his family—” She pauses to gesture to the cabin. “—but after his parents found out he triggered his curse, they gave it to him so he could have somewhere to get away. Eventually it became a sanctuary for the werewolves of Moon Dye Bay.” 

“Mark told me Jackson was his best friend…” 

Dahyun nods. “Ever since high school. Mark helped Jackson when he turned the first time, and Jackson was there for Mark when his mother died.” 

Your heart warms at the thought of Mark having such a close, supportive relationship with someone. However, that same feeling falters when you remember Jackson’s mysterious, tragic death. 

“So how did he die?” You ask quietly, peering over Dahyun’s shoulder to check the state of the other inhabitants in the backyard. Felix and his other friends are still engaged in their rather intense card game and are paying no mind to you nor Dahyun. The information lessens your anxiety, though only slightly. 

You return your focus to your companion when she tosses a wrinkled shirt back inside the basket with a bitter glare. “The Primes killed him.” 

���But why?” Dahyun turns at your inquiry. “There had to have been a reason? Right?” 

“When the Primes first came back to town, about four years ago, Mark and Jackson came up with a plan to try to kill their ancient asses once and for all.” 

“How? They’re invincible?” 

“Mark was going to gather enough power to break the immortality curse that makes them untouchable.” She answers, “Once Mark took out their safeguard, Jackson would drive a stake through each of their hearts.” 

You frown. “I’m guessing that didn’t go as planned?” 

“Mark couldn’t get the magic in time, but Jackson was never one to back down from a fight.” 

“What do you mean?” 

Dahyun rolls her eyes. “Jackson was one of the best people I will ever know, but his ambition always went to that big-ass head of his. That night, he was going to kill the Prime Two or he was going to die trying…” 

“So you’re saying it was… his fault he died?” 

“Yes and no.” She hums with a shrug. “Like I said, Jackson was always that ride or die kind of person. He was passionate and driven, but he was also reckless and stubborn.”  

You furrow your brow before leaning back on your palms. Puzzle pieces are slowly starting to fit together, especially concerning Mark and why he blames himself for Jackson’s death, but what doesn’t make sense is why Jackson died in the first place? If Jaebeom and Jinyoung couldn’t be killed then, and still can’t be killed now, what threat is a brash, pig-headed werewolf?... And why would Jackson be so driven to kill the Primes that he’d give up his own life doing so? 

Before you can spill your concerns to the waiting werewolf, the buzz of your phone seizes your attention. You retract the device from your bag to check the text message, finding a thread of new messages from Sana, one of which asking when you’re going to return to the apartment. You shoot her a quick answer with a promise to also pick up some dinner before you turn back to Dahyun. 

“I should probably get going. I have a couple errands to run before the sun goes down.” 

She rises to her feet in synchronization with you. “Of course. I hope I helped at least a little.” 

“You helped so much, Dahyun. Really. Thank you.” 

“I’m glad.” The werewolf smiles. “It was really nice to see and talk to you, (Y/N). If you need anything else, please don’t hesitate to come visit me again.” 

“I appreciate that more than you could know.” You lean in to give Dahyun a quick, easy hug before walking with her back toward the front of the cabin. In the midst of approaching Sana’s car, your mind shifts back to another important, yet crazy thought that occurred to you while in conversation with Jackson last night. Without thinking about the consequences, you pause and ask Dahyun one final question: 

“Is it… possible to bring someone back from the dead?” 

Judging by her tense shoulders and bewildered expression, your abrupt inquiry takes Dahyun by surprise. She merely stares at you with saucer-like eyes and parted lips for a moment, until she seems to regain her composure. 

Even then, her words are muddled and full of confusion. “I-I mean, I don’t know anything about witchcraft myself, b-but I think so?” She narrows her eyes. “...Why?” 

“Just wondering.” You play off her curiosity by pulling your keys from your bag and opening the driver’s door. With a weak smile and a nod, you bid the werewolf farewell. “Thanks again. I’ll see you around.” 

You don’t wait for Dahyun’s response, too worried that she might somehow pick up on the plan slowly building inside your head. Without a second to spare, you switch on the engine, put the vehicle in proper gear and back out of the cabin’s driveway. Dahyun watches from the deck, and though you’re distant from one another, you can feel the intensity of her stare as you maneuver back onto the dirt, forest roads. 

Once you’re a decent distance from the cabin, you find your cell phone, pull up a specific contact and balance the device on your shoulder. The line picks up after two rings, and you don’t wait for the usual chime of a greeting. Not when you’re so deep into everything now. 

“Bam, I need everything you have on necromancy.” You say into the phone, squeezing the leather cover of the steering wheel in a mixture of anticipation and excitement. “And I also need you to promise not to say a word about this to anyone… Not even Yugyeom.”

Changbin is fuming. Absolutely fuming. 

It feels like his entire body is made of electricity, coursing through his veins and boiling his blood red-hot. He can’t control the trembling of his hands. Not even when he stuffs them inside the pocket of his hoodie. The urge to break something is strong, but Changbin doesn’t want to break just anything… No—he wants to break someone. Hurt someone. 

There was once a time he would have never thought these words. Then again, that was before the Primes came to town, and before Jackson was murdered. Everything changed after that. Everyone changed. When the pretentious, youngest asshole of a bloodsucker showed up to reveal that Jackson’s body couldn’t even be handed over, no one put up a fight. No one stood up for their Alpha. Life just went on, as if nothing had changed. 

A hiss sounds through Changbin’s gritted teeth as he thinks back to his most recent argument with Chan and Yugyeom. Neither of them even cared when he told them that Dahyun was the one who came at him first. They didn’t listen… but why would they? Changbin is just the runt with the anger issues, right? Why would anything he have to say matter? Why should they give a damn about his perspective… about his pain?

No one understands how much Changbin misses Jackson, nor do they understand how much anger it brings him that his legacy still goes unavenged. For fucksake, no one is brave enough to say his goddamn name aloud anymore. And even when he’s mentioned, everyone pretends as if there isn’t one giant ass elephant in the room. It makes him sick. Furious. 

Changbin is suddenly awoken from his racing thoughts when his shoulder slams into the body of another walking pedestrian. He reels around and regards the hooded stranger with a deep growl, “Watch where you’re fucking going, asshole! Unless you want me to break your fucking arm!” 

“That won’t be necessary.” Changbin watches, unamused, as the stranger removes his jacket hood. His face is familiar, he realizes. Changbin feels his anger grow tenfold. 

He pulls back his own tattered hood with another growl, “You better have a good fucking reason to be lurking in our territory, witch.” 

“I came to talk to you.” The witch remains unphased by the wolf’s aggression, even when the latter stalks closer and closer to his lean form. “I think you’ll like what I have to say.” 

“Oh yeah?” Although the male is slightly taller than him, Changbin doesn’t hesitate to get up in his face. “And what makes you think that?” 

The witch doesn’t pull away, but merely shrugs. “Because we both want the same thing… Revenge.” 

Changbin’s ears perk at that single word. His ferocity falters, prompting him to create distance between his and his companion’s bodies. After tucking his hands back inside his pockets, he doesn’t say a word, but nods for the former to continue. 

The witch smirks.

“What would you say if there was a possibility to destroy the Prime Two?”  

“I’d say you’re crazy.” The wolf bites his lips, “...but I’d also say I’m the slightest bit interested.” 

“And if I told you there was also a possibility of hurting Mark Tuan in the process?” 

This time, a mirroring smirk pulls along Changbin’s lips. 

“I’d say I’m in.”

“Are you sure I don’t need to come over there?” 

Youngjae rolls his eyes at Mark’s concerned tone, adjusting the phone on his shoulder to better his grip on the thick grimoire in his hands. “No, hyung. Jisung and Lia left hours ago, so it’s just me.” 

“I can help you out.” 

“I really don’t think I need your help for a plant revival spell.” He glances toward the array of wilting flowers and herbs, before releasing a chuckle into the phone. “Seriously, hyung. Take the time to rest… You had a long day yesterday.” 

He can almost see Mark shaking his head over the line. “Trust me, I’m very well-rested. I slept close to sixteen hours last night.” 

“Then sleep another sixteen. Satan knows you need it.” 

Youngjae sets the grimoire down on the countertop beside a yellowing, potted basil. He lays his hand over the ancient book, feeling the electric rush of magic entering his body through his palm. Once he gathers a satisfactory amount, he removes his hand and instead points toward the dying plant. 

“I just… hate not being productive, you know?”

Youngjae watches the leaves of the basil gradually lighten and shift from rotted to fresh, finally answering when the plant stands tall, proud and very, very green: 

“You need to give yourself time, Mark-hyung. That’s the most productive thing you can do right now.” 

“I… I guess you’re right.” Mark sighs, and even through the phone, Youngjae can pinpoint his friend’s exhaustion. He hums in response and turns to revive a drooping sunflower, making note to move the plant to a perch where it can reach the sunlight. 

“By the way, have you heard from (Y/N)?” 

“No. Not since last night.” Youngjae answers. 

“I texted her this morning and this afternoon, but she hasn’t texted me back.” The siphoner doesn’t respond, focusing on ripening the cherries of the sick miniature fruit tree. “Jihyo apparently left town last night… You don’t think that’s something to be concerned about, right?”

WWX finding out about them and joining also fun!). Huawei launched two models of its camera centric P-series this year – Huawei P30 and P30 Pro. However along with these two, the Chinese smartphone maker also launched a cheaper model in the line-up, Huawei P30 Lite in Pakistan and other regions except China.

Like usually Huawei launches a smartphone in China and then launches the same phone globally with a different name. Sometimes the same phone is placed in a certain line-up or series to fill the pricing gap. The latter is what we can assume as a situation with Huawei P30 lite replacing the China specific Nova 4e in global markets.

Nevertheless the identical design and hardware, the P30 Lite features some extra network bands than Nova 4e, to support in global markets. But launching the phone in P-series to reach more consumers with low budget, might be an ideal decision for the company to have more sales.

Huawei launched its camera power house – Huawei P30 Pro for PKR 1,75,000 in Pakistan. The company also launched the standard model of P30 for PKR 1,25,000. These are exactly around the European price tag and really the higher ones – thanks to Pakistani Rupee value.

So with those higher-priced flagship models, Huawei P30 Lite becomes really favorite among the lower-budget customers. The P30 Lite costs only PKR 48,000 but also lacks almost everything that the flagship counterparts have. It’s just another mid-range smartphone that you would see a lot in this price range. The question is, is P30 Lite worth the price of it and is it really competitive among its price range? We will evaluate that right in this review, so continue reading.

Our first impressions were pretty fine with Huawei P30 Lite. However P30 Lite felt premium like any previous P-series phones but as we have recently with Nova series phones. They are as good as P-series. Means to say that the build quality and design of P30 lite is extremely similar to those, recently introduced with Nova 3 series.

Build and Design

Huawei P30 lite has a unibody design with a 3D curved glass on the back. The design follows the last year’s P20 Pro which was later adapted by some other brands too including Honor. In fact Huawei shipped its mid-range Nova 3 series and Y9 2019 in the similar design. Now that the Chinese phone maker has not moved on to another unique design for its P30 flagship phones, it keeps it alike on the P30 Lite as well.

The other blue variant, which is called Peacock Blue has some eye-catchy gradient color. But the black variant is totally plain and decent.

Thanks to the not-so-big size of the phone, that the handling is easy as well as one-handed use is also quite possible.

You can see the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor along with the triple-camera setup arrayed vertically on the upper-left corner.

Components and Ports

Huawei P30 Lite sports a USB Type-C port along with the loud speaker and 3.5mm audio jack at the bottom. There is also a mouthpiece (primary mic). The power button is on the right side of the phone along side the volume rocker.

There is a SIM slot on the top of the phone, which is a hybrid slot. It can serve for one SIM and one microSD card or two SIM cards at once. You cannot use two SIM cards and a memory card simultaneously though.

Front and Display

Huawei P30 lite features a U-shaped dewdrop notch on the front that houses the front-facing camera. Bezels around the screen are now similar to most bezel-less designs we have seen. They are all thin around the left, right and top, whereas the bottom chin takes some space due to the components and ports.

Huawei P30 Lite features a 6.15-inch screen with aspect ratio of 19.3:9. It comes with full HD+ display resolution of 2312 x 1080 pixels serves with the pixel density of around 415 ppi. According to Huawei the it’s a 90% screen-to-body ratio which does not include the the frame outside the glass. But when we include the full front profile to calculate the display area ratio, it comes out as around 84.2%.

The phone comes with an LTPS IPS LCD panel and its outdoor visibility is quite impressive. Full HD resolution is also something attractive but it’s always prone to consume more battery. So you might want to consider your preference here – whether you want long runner or a sharp and crisp display.

During our trial, the display wasn’t quite aggressive with battery drain. So you shouldn’t be worry about that either.

Software and User Interface

Huawei P30 lite runs Android 9.0 Pie operating system out-of-the-box. On top of it, the phone layers with the proprietary EMUI 9. Huawei has changed a lot in the new version, specially the placement of some built-in apps and features within settings.

The native camera app once again gets some feature shifts. The aperture mode is no more available on the main viewfinder slides but portrait mode is. But you can access the aperture mode from “More” screen. Just like that there are some unneeded changes I believe.

Apart from those little changes, the basic interface and user experience remains the same as we have seen previously in EMUI 8.2. The home screen still comes with two modes – standard and drawer mode. Notification panel remains intact with white theme.

Lock, Unlock and Home Screen

The lock screen keeps its Magazine style by default as always. You can change the categories to load wallpapers from, in this specific style. Just in case if you didn’t know, this style loads a new wallpaper every time you press power button to wake up the phone. Some quick options are also present on the lock screen.

The home screen can be configured as always to have different layout of icons. Folders and context menu is there that you can initiate by tap and holding an icon – you can still drag the icon that way by ignoring the menu and continue with dragging.

Even though the EMUI 9 has some features/options shift from here and there, the home screen settings are still not in one place. The home screen configuration options still don’t offer to change the style – standard or drawer mode.

App Drawer

Default home screen style is just old without the app drawer but you can turn it on by going through Phone settings > Home screen & wallpaper > Home screen style > Drawer.

Huawei should really move this option to the home screen settings which are available right from the home screen.

Software based Notch Handler

The software based top-bezel illusion that camouflage the notch as it was never there, continues with P30 lite. Though the notches made it possible for displays to expand further around to edges, there are people who don’t like those cut-outs. This software based bezel is really for them as it aligns with the notch’s size by darkening the top status bar.

Variety of Navigation Styles

Navigation Dock. When enabled, a dock is appeared floating on the screen which you can simply tap, tap & hold, hold & stretch and drag to respectively navigate to back, home, recent tasks view or move the dock itself.

Security & Privacy

Fingerprint and Face Unlock are the two basic security features in Huawei P30 Lite. There is indeed no objection over fingerprint scanner as it’s as fast as always Huawei has made it. Face Unlock, on the other hand, only uses the front camera. Hence it’s not that fast and secure as fingerprint sensor will be.

PrivateSpace

In addition to various security and privacy features like App Lock, user profiles, Huawei has added a new PrivateSpace which I guess is more useful than user profiles. Unlike user profiles you don’t need to choose the user first to switch to. Instead, you can just turn it on with your main profile and set a different PIN code to unlock into this space right from your own main profile’s lock screen. In fact you can set a different finger to go into this space without any other input on the lock screen.

It’s a perfect option to apply on a case when you need to give out your phone temporarily to anyone for a while, you can put your finger (that you have set for PrivateSpace) on the scanner and it will be unlocked into that space. You can even share that PIN code with them as it’s totally a separate space and won’t show anything from your main profile.

Phone Manager

The phone manager is still there and it’s an important part of Huawei smartphones, I appreciate that as most of the things it would handle from management of memory to the privacy features. Phone manager app include everything from permissions, mobile data control, memory cleaner and management, Avast virus scanner is built-in, app locker and then a shortcut to battery options.

Smart Screen Resolution

Huawei P30 lite has a native resolution of 2312 x 1080 pixels but you can set the resolution down to 1734 x 810 pixels which will consume low power. However, by default, the Smart resolution option is turned on which will automatically adjust the screen resolution when needed to conserve the battery power.

App Assistant (formerly Game Suite)

Previously Huawei has shipped its phones with a built-in Game Suite app. It would allow users to add certain games in a list that will provide the users with uninterrupted gaming experience. In addition the system will optimize the settings for better performance in selected games. This may also consume more power and you may experience heat up. But the Game Suite was replaced by the “App Assistant” in the latest EMUI 9.

I didn’t find any significant difference but it was really hard finding the App Assistant in the phone. Unlike the Game Suite that was right among the apps, the App Assistant is hidden into settings. You need to go through Settings > Apps > AppAssistant.

System Performance

As we have already noted above, the Huawei P30 lite features Kirin 710. It is company’s latest mid-range system-on-chip which was released last year with Nova 3i. Sooner after that, the chip was also featured on Huawei’s mid-range Y9 2019.

Nevertheless the Kirin 710 is a good processor and competed really well with Snapdragon 660 and Helio P60 at the time of launch. But now that we have seen upgraded versions from both Qualcomm and MediaTek, I believe Huawei could have brought some upgraded processor too with P30 Lite.

PUBG Mobile should be enough to tell about the gaming performance; right? Well, it automatically configured on the second level of graphics “balanced” and frame rate at “medium”. This default configuration gave me the wonderfully lagless experience. You can also go further 1-level up in graphics to have some doomed experience.

So it’s not gonna take any bump in performance compared to previous devices with Kirin 710. In fact, the P30 lite’s benchmark scores were far less than Nova 3i and Huawei Y9 2019 carrying the identical processor. But the culprit is the default settings which prefer to facilitate with better power management. The system allows you to turn on “Performance Mode” in battery settings. That brings back the true performance of the phone which is nearly identical to what we have experienced with Nova 3i and Y9 2019.

Battery Performance

Battery wise, the Kirin 710 has helped the P30 lite just how it did with Nova 3i. The 3340mAh battery in Huawei P30 lite is good for all kind tasks for the whole day.

Can’t compare with Y9’s large 4000 mAh battery, but still P30 Lite didn’t let me down with its power management. With all day to day tasks including phone calls, text, social interaction, streaming video and music, etc, it should be fine for P30 lite to stay up until you may need to put it on charge when you go to sleep.

Like Nova 3i, excessive camera usage may take more battery in P30 lite. Graphically heavy gaming will take most of the battery juice as well as GPS navigation. With that in mind, you may need to charge the phone mid-day.

Camera – Photos and Videos

Huawei P30 lite features triple camera setup on the back. The main 24MP sensor is supported by a large f/1.8 aperture lens. Along side an 8MP camera sports ultra wide-angle lens. A third 2MP depth sensor is hosted for bokeh effect in portrait and aperture mode.

The camera user interface follows most of the features as we already know, however it has also shifted some from one place to another. AR Lens is also present with 3D QMoji for front camera and other visual effects for both front and rear cameras. Unlike Nova 3i, the AR backgrounds and 3D objects are not available in P30 lite.

The camera features a pro-mode like always, but a so-called “Night” mode is also present that takes shots in dark environment with longer exposures and lower-ISO sensitivity. Unlike in pro-mode, the long exposure in night mode works with AI powered stability that can work impressively hand-held. It takes a 3 sec exposure at lowest possible ISO sensitivity according to the scene. You can choose your own exposure time and ISO as well in this mode, but the longer you go, the more blurry photos you may get.

Huawei P30 lite features company’s AI algorithm can “recognize 22 categories” of scenes and provides optimized settings instantly. The “AI” option is provided right above the live viewfinder that you can turn on/off.

Camera Performance

The Huawei P30 lite camera worked nicely to capture pleasing photos in most of the environments. The camera reproduces true colors but a bit vibrant as well. Image detail is also fine along with right amount of sharpness in bright light or outdoor. The camera also managed to provide better dynamic range in most overly back-lit situations.

In addition to enhancing sharpness, producing better colors and image detail, the noise handling was also impressive by P30 lite.

When shooting in dark and low-light situations, P30 lite impressed with capturing nice image detail. The noise handling was also controlled well. Sometime the over exposed light glows were the problem. But when the the special night mode is in action, you are gonna witness really a pleasant night-time photograph with vibrant but accurate colors.

As far as portrait/aperture mode is concerned, image detail mostly remains fine but sometimes it gets softer on subject. Taking portrait shots in bright light is easy for the phone, but like most smartphones even including the high-end ones, it struggles to take usable portrait shots in low-light.

The ultra wide-angle camera helps in scenarios where you need to cover more area in your frame. But currently like any other smartphone with ultra wide angle-lens, P30 lite also comes with a fixed-focus camera. The images look good when viewing in full but when you look look at it 1:1 scale, you will notice that the detail is not as fine as you would have with the primary camera.

The 32MP front camera is just new entrant in mid-range segment. The P30 lite makes use of it very well. This large resolution selfie shots come very sharp out of the camera. The image detail impressive in bright light. However the one in low-light is also not that bad.

Video Recording

The Huawei P30 lite supports up to 1080p video recording that too 30fps and 60fps. Though the electronic image stabilization (EIS) is only supported with 30fps recording. The phone does not support 4K video recording but indeed has a Slow-mo support with 120fps or 480fps.

Conclusion

Huawei P30 lite comes at right price range with all its features but we still believe that the phone must feature an upgraded processor. However Kirin 710 is still comparable with MediaTek’s Helio P70 in Vivo V15 and OPPO F11 Pro. The default settings of P30 lite focus on power management which is indeed a good thing. But in this default mode the performance of the phone will be much restricted. That’s why with default settings the benchmark tools performed far less than others. However, turning on the performance mode, brings back the phone to perform equally with others.

USB Type-C has finally been added to mid-range segment with P30 lite, which is a welcome thing. Fast charging on the other hand is also a good thing on P30 lite.

But with the price tag of PKR 48,000/- P30 lite is gonna have tough time competing Vivo V15 and OPPO F11 Pro. However it’s worth mentioning that Vivo’s V15 and OPPO’s F11 Pro cost a couple of more thousands and come with some appealing features such as pop-up selfie camera and truly bezel-less screen.

P30 lite can still be considered on the positive side as the phone comes with the glass build and also supports USB Type-C. It’s rather more compact. On the other hand, the Vivo and OPPO’s counterparts are built with plastic. So it’s much easier for you to decide – what stands better according to your preference.

2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport review: Streamlined SUV skimps on sport

A nip and tuck to the Atlas’ profile gets you the more athletic looking Cross Sport model.

The Volkswagen Atlas is a big, three-row beast of an SUV with its wide body and horizontal design elements. The 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport is only slightly less so. The new variant shrinks the SUV’s body slightly and tweaks the roofline for a sportier profile and more athletic curb appeal, allowing it to better do battle with the new Passport — itself a scaled-down version of the Atlas’ closest nemesis, the Honda Pilot.

The Cross Sport lowers the Atlas’ roofline to 67.8 inches (down 2.3) and shortens the SUV’s overall length to 195.5 inches (5.2 less). The result, along with a bit of a nipping and tucking of the profile, is a much more muscular and athletic take on the standard Atlas’ stiff, brick-like aesthetic.

The slightly shorter length visually pushes the rear wheels out to the vehicle’s corners, giving the Cross Sport a more aggressive-looking stance, while the lower roofline and exaggerated wheel arches make the Atlas appear lower and leaner. Personally, I think the Cross Sport looks the way the Atlas should have all along.

Sculpting its sheetmetal saves this Atlas variant about 200 pounds, depending on the trim level, but the more svelte shape doesn’t help as much with aerodynamics and efficiency as I’d hoped. The Cross Sport still has the same 0.34 drag coefficient as its more squared-off sibling and largely the same fuel efficiency across the spectrum of engine options. At best, I’m talking 21 miles per gallon city, 24 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined for the front-wheel-drive four-cylinder. At the other end of the spectrum is the all-wheel-drive V6, at 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined.

The underpinnings haven’t changed. The Cross Sport sits on the same 117.3-inch wheelbase with 8 inches of ground clearance and retains its wide boi status at 78.4 inches across. I’ve always thought it weird that the Atlas classifies as a midsize SUV despite its imposing curbside stature.

The Cross Sport V6 4Matic gains one combined mpg despite unchanged city and highway estimates, so there must be some small aerodynamic advantage being rounded off.

Of course, the tidier exterior design costs the Cross Sport a bit of interior volume, but not as much practical space as you might think. By the numbers, there’s 40.3 cubic feet behind the second row and 77.8 cubic feet with the seats folded flat. That’s a loss of 15.2 and 19 cubes, respectively, compared to the larger Atlas, but it’s all lost space near the ceiling. The Cross Sport still does a fantastic job swallowing up bulky items — including a 52-inch wide entertainment center — with room to spare.

Taller drivers and passengers may notice the loss of about 2 inches of headroom on both of the Cross Sport’s rows (39.4 inches front, 37.8 inches rear) and there’s no missing the lack of a third row option. There’s just no room for it in the Cross Sport’s shorter chassis. 

Soft ride, relaxed performance

The Cross Sport looks more athletic, but it’s no more agile than before. The SUV’s ride is just as soft as the standard model and just as comfort-focused. Despite the reduced curb weight, the Cross Sport feels big with numb steering that lacks much of the car-like nimbleness of its competitors around town.

On the highway, the Atlas’ vague steering and soft suspension makes the SUV feel almost truck-ish. I constantly have to make small steering corrections to make up for bumps, dips or crosswinds nudging the Cross Sport to and fro. There’s a lot of vertical and lateral body movement at speed over my local (and very uneven) highways, meaning the SUV never really feels settled. It isn’t so fiddly as to feel unsafe or scary, but the Atlas requires just a bit more mental energy to keep centered within its lane than, say, our long-term Honda Passport — that’s not exactly what I mean when I say I want an engaging drive.

With such a wide body, there often isn’t much wiggle room between the lane markers.

Two engines are available to Atlas Cross Sport buyers: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6, each mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Either can be had in front-wheel drive configuration or, optionally, Volkswagen’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

When possible, lie on any mattress that you’re considering. Wear loose clothes, and shoes you can slide off. Make your self comfortable, and shoo away the salesperson if you’re feeling pressured. Salespeople should expect you to invest some time. Spend at least 5 or ten minutes on each part and on your back again (your belly, too, if that’s a preferred sleeping position). Panelists who required bedrooms home for a month-long trial hardly ever transformed the opinion they created following the first night time. Shopping on the internet or at a warehouse golf club? Tryouts aren’t usually a choice, so checking come back policies before you get is extra-important.

Check Come back Policies

Make sure the store offers a complete refund or credit toward another mattress. Return periods, called “comfort often guarantees,” range between a week or two to 120 times. Some retailers, including Sears and Macy’s, charge a 15 percent restocking charge. Some sellers provide free pickup if you would like a refund or an exchange, but usually, you’ll have to cover it-or cart the mattress to the store. Macy’s, for example, charges an $85 pickup charge. And you’ll be accountable for any damage.

Make an effort to Haggle

Once you’ve settled on the model, make an effort to bring the purchase price down. Many businesses, such as warehouse night clubs, have set prices and won’t budge. But also for merchants that do negotiate-particularly niche chains-huge markups permit them to lessen costs by 50 percent or even more during their regular sales. Our suggestion: Any moment of the year, insist upon a sale price you’ve seen for the mattress you understand you want, and don’t hesitate to go out if you feel you’re obtaining a natural offer. While it’s just a little tougher to negotiate online, you may still find ways to save lots of.

Don’t Be Bullied Into Investing in a Box Spring

You may not need it. If your package spring isn’t damaged and continues to be structurally audio, consider keeping it and saving cash (approximately $150 to $300 for a queen-size). One caveat: Some brands need you to buy their container spring to get full guarantee coverage. Many foam manufacturers recommend a system foundation or strong slatted solid wood foundations.

Understand the Warranty

It can range between 10 to 25 years and addresses only manufacturing problems such as sagging and loose or broken coil cables. Coverage is prorated frequently, and therefore, it decreases as time passes.

On Delivery Day

Never accept delivery without inspecting the mattress (and the package spring, if you get one) for staining and other damage. Also, make sure that the mattress has a label that says “all-new materials” before you send the drivers on his way. If it’s not there, refuse delivery. And keep it on afterward when you have to document a warranty state in the foreseeable future. If you bought a bed-in-a-box, examine the mattress once you unroll it. Call customer support immediately if something is apparently incorrect with the mattress or whether it's dirty. Have a few photos with your smartphone in the event the client service representative requests proof of the damage.

Interview with Ruth Root and Laura Owens

Laura Owens: Tell me about Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

Ruth Root: When I was starting to really crack down and work on this show was right when Trump was elected. The election itself was really contentious and distracting and I kept thinking that as soon as it was over, thinking Hillary was going to win, I would stop watching the news and be able to concentrate and get work done. But instead, after Trump’s win, I was in complete shock and just kept reading articles analyzing the election and trying to understand what happened.

I kept running across statements and interviews by Ruth Bader Ginsberg that were really amazing thoughts and started to follow everything she was saying. She seemed to speak clearly, and in an inspiring way about things. So an image of her made it into one the fabrics.

LO: And you collect a lot of images of textiles and bits and pieces of vintage fabric, but all of the textiles used in the show you actually designed yourself so nothing is found.

RR: I designed all the fabric using Photoshop, but much of the imagery is found. There’s a fragment of a Sonia Delaunay textile and a Wiener Werkstätte textile, and a security envelope pattern. Also Frank Stella paintings, part of a Leger painting, and many saved images of artists’ work from my computer desktop that I’ve pulled off the Internet and wanted to revisit it for some reason.

Some of the fabrics are more complex than others; they contain a density of images, and some of the fabric pieces are just geometric with lines, or dots, and one is a monochrome. Within the indexical image fabrics that are also images of my older work and images that reference other paintings in this show.

LO: For people who don’t know your early work, you made these paintings that the textiles remind me of because the scale shift is so intense between the scale of the piece and then the detail. The paintings had little cigarettes smoking or little eyes that you would find when you got closer, but otherwise from far away, it felt like an abstract painting.

RR: Yeah, they looked like regular abstract paintings and then the space rearranged itself depending on if the eyes were in the negative or the positive space. I love when there are big things and small things in a single painting and the scale shifts. I like when you can get an overall sense of what’s going on in a single painting and then you can keep looking and looking and see smaller elements.

LO: What so great about the new work is that there’s so much going on and they speak to the idea or the potentiality of something that’s two dimensional being three dimensional, not only within the textile design, but in the shapes you’re making with what’s painted. The pieces to me have this unrealized potential that I feel like infuse them with this world of possibility.

RR: Well, two things. One is that my friend Miranda Lichtenstein once said that the paintings reminded her of a flattened sculpture. Like the way in the Road Runner cartoon, where the coyote character runs into something and just falls down or is flattened by a car and then he pops back up in two dimensions instead of three dimensions. But the other thing is that after those cigarette and eye paintings, for the longest time I made shaped aluminum paintings with a concealed hanging cleat mechanism that were supposed to look as if they were installed flat against the wall. So now, I feel that this newer series of paintings has a completely exposed hanging mechanism. You can see where they attach to the wall and where they loop through. So these are actually really three dimensional compared to my previous work. And they are kind of like one sided sculptures.

LO: We had talked in New York when I visited your about how this work makes explicit the fact that something is hanging: hanging on the wall, hanging off itself, that the apparatus of hanging itself on the wall is actually a mode of decision making and a subject of the work.

RR: The wall is just key to my understanding of the painting and how the negative and positive space will function in the work. I think about the stretcher and canvas and what the variations are - how far you can go from that and it can still be read as the same thing. I think of these a variation of a stretcher and canvas.

LO: I was also thinking about the year a while back when you were not feeling so great and you ended up staying home a lot and making a lot of quilts. I remember you sewing a lot and these quilts being something that could go on a bed or on a wall. Also that a quilt is never a perfect rectangle or square, it always has a slight shape to it. I’m wondering if that year of sewing influenced you at all?

RR: I think that year was about 20 years ago. I was having really bad migraine headache and was in bed a lot. I was living in a tiny apartment, and when I had studio visits, I would always lay things out on the bed to see them. Around the same time, I had seen the Gee’s Bend quilt show at the Whitney and just loved those quilts and really thought of them as abstract paintings. And Amish quilts as more hard edged abstract paintings. So somehow I started making my own quilts around that time and it was as if lying in bed with a quilt was like being inside an abstract painting. I also liked experiencing a painting as something functional or something that involves the way in which we experience material things.

LO: Right. I think in some ways with these works you are creating and making textiles, but the textiles are never subservient to what’s painted, it’s really on an equal footing. Also the hanging mechanism and the fact that they are flatter to the wall than a traditional stretched canvas is somewhere in between a number of different things; a sculpture, a textile, a painting. It’s slipping between all these different…

RR: Right and a macramé plant holder, a shaped holder for a typewriter or a gun, or a soft guitar case.

LO: I know you worked for a long time trying to figure out how these things would get constructed. There were a couple years where you were really figuring it out.

RR: There were actually a lot of construction issues because I’m not a sculptor and I didn’t really know how to sew very well. There were a lot of issues around the weight of the Plexiglas and how to make something that could actually support 20 to 30 pounds without puckering up. And how perfect the fabric had to be or how imperfect it could be and still look right to me. If they are too perfect, they look machine-made, or too graphic, or if they are too hand-made they look too folky. The past few years I have been figuring out how to have a hybrid of soft and hard, handmade and polished.

LO: That’s cool. I think that finding the hybrid is really interesting because there’s these unpredictable juxtapositions that happen with shape and color and texture that ultimately feel so complete and so perfect in a way. There’s an unpredictability between the pieces, but then you see these types of images morphing and changing throughout the show.

RR: One of the paintings has parts of all the other painted components of the paintings, and it functions as a kind of microcosm of the show. The painted parts echo each other and the fabrics similarly have a relationship to each other. Some of the fabrics will repeat imagery from other fabrics; the background pattern becomes the foreground or a negative space becomes positive space. I’m trying to make them operate like that.

LO: Also you made a decision to allow each to have their own freestanding wall in the space, which does a bunch of hybrid things as well. It makes it so the show as a body of work dissolves hierarchies and they keep re-dissolving as your body walks through the show. You think some particular view or piece is prioritized, but then because of the configuration the whole show builds in your memory when you get these added layers of information. Also the walls themselves sort of enunciate the object-ness of the work and also the impact of each one as its own figure.

RR: I think that’s true. I don’t have anything to add, I just think that’s so true. The other thing that’s playing with my mind is that working on eleven paintings, to hold that many paintings in my mind at once has been difficult. I’m used to seven paintings or eight paintings at one time. The show reinforces that it’s hard to see them as a whole.

LO: No, it’s not possible and you’ve made it not possible.

RR: I’m used to the idea that once you bring the show together, you get to see the group.

LO: In this space especially, when people make things like paintings, there’s always been a privileging of these two side walls, and so you can be in the whole show at once. You might have to turn your body around but you can get a glimpse of it all at once. And this is completely denying it.

RR: It’s funny because there is repetition within the paintings, but it’s kind of just like they’re scattered and you have to find other connections or just start over with a new painting.

LO: But it’s really privileging the viewer and saying your body and your memory, and your walking through the show, you determine how you combine and see this work together.

RR: You either notice the juxtapositions of things or hold them in your head a different way.

LO: A lot of what you’re doing refers to things in the real world, like Ruth Bader Ginsberg or actual textiles, or three dimensional flattening, but your work definitely seems to be in love with the history of abstraction and where it comes from in design, textiles, modernism and all kinds of places where we find non- representational color and shape. Why do you think that’s important for people to look at now? That might be a really pedestrian question for two people so invested in painting!

RR: Oddly enough, I think that’s my inner world. That’s what I’ve always paid attention to and it gives me so much pleasure to think about and to look at. These are what influence me and they are the things in my head all the time. It’s cumulative - I think we’ve looked at so many things, paintings, books, internet images and they are all forming relationships within our heads. And the context of painting is so many other paintings. I’m not sure why it is important to look at now. I think it’s just the way I’ve been looking at things now and the way as painter I’ve started to just feel like I’m holding so many things in my visual memory.

LO: It just also dawned on me that these also refer to pattern design for clothing.

RR: Right, like origami or folding, pant sleeves and belt loops and pockets. I think also after painting what I thought were abstract paintings for so long and showing them and figuring out the layout, I had this idea that I wanted to make the exact opposite of my work, the alternate universe or parallel universe of my work. The concealed hanging mechanism became the hanging mechanism as a main, exposed part of the painting. After doing geometric paintings, the freedom of letting all these things into the painting was a way of making something that was the old painting’s opposite. Having the world come in, rather than reducing things down.

LO: It’s interesting because the hanging mechanism actually does hang the artwork and you basically do want it to hang a specific way, there’s a functionality in it that one associates with “form following function”, which is a more design or craft idea, but you expose that as a, no pun intended, weight bearing decision. You’re going to have to make decisions based on whether this amount of weight will hang off of this textile?

RR: Yes and how many legs do I need to make so that it levels itself out, if it’s an asymmetrical shape.

LO: Just thinking about just one of them, they are very complex. There’s a lot to hold in your head. Just the construction and then I know there’s also just basic painting decisions about proportion.

RR: That’s my favorite part, the non-painting part. The light engineering of figuring out how they hang is so fun. And to make a million screw holes in the fabric before its covered to see if something moves slightly, how it levels, and if something moves in another direction, what that does, and then if you add another support leg, what that does.

LO: I’ve thought about that a lot, that one of the fun parts about art is recognizing a problem and then trying solve it and that you get great satisfaction out of creating a problem that you then have to solve. And you have one that’s a truly functional problem.

RR: But after doing paintings that don’t have that as a problem, then somehow that’s the really fun part and the interesting part. But then it becomes the part that’s so invisible once they are done.

LO: Right, you don’t even think about it and take it for granted. Of course it’s this wide and there’s this many screw holes. I like that all of them are these diptychs. These are, for lack of a better word, two paintings combined into one object.

RR: Yes, one continues the other.

LO: And we were also talking that you still make these shaped bookmarks and we were talking about how the show unfolds like the pages of a book. I know you love books and are always looking at images of abstract art and textiles in books and I feel like we’ve bonded over liking similar books and finding obscure books.

RR: For a press release for Die 2008 show at Andrew Kreps I bookmarked around 80 books in my studio of images that related to shaped paintings and foreground- background relationships, negative spaces and positive spaces. Images like shaped bathmats, that took a negative space and made that space positive and Bruce Nauman’s cast of an empty space under a chair. They were bookmarked with post-it notes and scraps of paper that were the right size to stick out from a large art book. From those bookmarked images I made a press release of just images that were influences and alternate way of thinking about shaped paintings.

Then, it was as if my work just became bookmarks for a year or two. I kept thinking about what was important to me and why I liked certain work and certain paintings. and I was making shaped scraps of paper to use in the books.  And if I had to start over and I had the freedom to make anything, what would I make? My old work became part of my source material. And from working with paper and folding it and messing around with it, these paintings started to emerge.

LO: I think that’s something that a lot of people don’t understand. You’ll take a turn in your art and god only knows where the art is going to come out of it. Because that kind of investment in making bookmarks can just take over. I know that living in New York and the New York art world, it’s literally the opposite of the kind of impetus to make gallery-ready art.

RR:  I basically needed an “L” shaped bookmark.  Or a bookmark that would go from the top of the page to the bottom, or one that would bookmark an exact line of a beautiful book that you don’t want to mark up, and a post-it wouldn’t stick out far enough. So cutting a piece of paper that doesn’t harm a book, that fits exactly where the image or sentence on a page that you want to come back to. I wanted a bookmark that was one sided so you could place it in one direction and really be able to get back where you wanted to be. A book is so linear so you don’t want to get confused. I think that was also the way I let so many other influences into my work and let the context expand to be the overwhelming amount of information that we’re so interested in that we’re trying to synthesize or trying to hold at once.

LO: A lot of really great art is that the decision making and the habitual brain that says “this is good” or “this is bad” keeps switching in terms of taste, because you’re combining these almost clashing fabric and paint and your brain is stunned, almost like a stun-gun, into no judgement. I feel like that’s the mark of great art when good and bad become completely irrelevant.

RR: And you have to surprise yourself, or you have to change it if it’s not surprising.

LO: Do you want to talk about La Collectionneuse?

RR: That’s from a 1967 Eric Rohmer film that I saw probably 25 years ago. When I saw it, I loved it so much. An art collector, a playboy, and a young woman are all staying at a villa on the seaside in the South of France. La Collectionneuse refers to the woman who has tons of boyfriends and for some reason that title and the film have been in my head stuck in my head for a long time. Visually I loved the film because the characters seem like they’re just wearing whatever clothes have been left at the villa. The men are wearing short sleeved angora sweaters and whatever floral bathrobes are around. It’s just visually really funny.

LO: Maybe we should screen that here?

RR: You know, I re-watched it and it was like a Neil Labute play. I didn’t like it. The characters were all really loathsome to me. And I didn’t love it visually as much as I did when I first watched it. La Collectionneuse was going to be the title of this show but when I watched it again, I realized that I wasn’t that so interested in it and it was no longer the film itself, but more just the way it lasted in my memory. For the past three shows of this new work, I have always had one painting that contains all the other painted parts of the show’s paintings. My paintings are always Untitled but I call the microcosm painting “The Collectionneuse” in my mind, as a nickname. I created a fabric from the film’s title sequence because it was meaningful to me, but I don’t have a real affinity for the film anymore.
