#there was something terrible about 80/90s white middle class suburban culture acting like all of America's sins had been washed away

today I remembered something my mom used to say all the time. she'd talk about her fears that "they" would eventually come for her and take away her home and make it illegal for single woman like her to even own anything I used to blame it on general boomer brain worms but today realized it was really genuine because those property rights weren't available to any women until about the time she became an adult. She was the first woman in her family to own her own home. She could feel that it wasn't a settled and sure thing. She could sense that the culture she lived in didn't really want her to have those rights.
#I was raised by privileged white people in a quiet and comfortable american suburb#and the values and (lack of) history they taught me reflect all that#and oh boy they didn't teach me any history worth knowing#they were doing the classic privileged human thing of pretending previous struggles were all in the past and weren't even worth mentioning#there was something terrible about 80/90s white middle class suburban culture acting like all of America's sins had been washed away#that society and government were all Noble and Good and OK unlike those previous decades#Classic privilege and guilt keeping the skeletons locked away deep in a closet in the basement#I'm reading about Trauma and this is all part of avoiding terrible things#white americans are deeply haunted by the countless skeletons in the closet#trauma responses all the way down#my blog
