Imagine. Repairing the vestiges means that OFA would be back, but they are inside the void within Tomura's body that is in AFO's control which means they would probably be absorbed by AFO
Except they wouldn't be, if they instead found another vessel
One who is somehow alive and now has a reason to fight AFO
One who now not only has a reason but a VERY strong will to fight in general
One Tomura Shigaraki
Do you see the vision
What if Tomura somehow manifests or recovers the reconstruction part of his quirk and that's how OFA can come back? The vestiges shattered and usually when something shatters only shards are left, so is it possible for them to be put back together, even if it's only for a brief time?

Villain Hunt Arc Meta: All For Oneâs Horrific Guide to Methodically Breaking Down Your Local OFA Holder
Ft. Turning the âOverpowerednessâ of OFA into a Setback, and AFOâs Successful Manipulations Of Midoriya Izuku
In which I also give AFO too much credit for all the pain heâs probably caused, and theorize that his plans to break Izuku actually started getting enacted even before heâd escaped Tartarus.
(A.k.a. me loving the angst because this is really good angst writing, but also hating it because the manga doesnât come with a Angst with A Happy Ending tag unless you count Izukuâs âthis is the story of how I became the greatest heroâ which isnât really a guarantee of happiness )
So. What an arc! In the span of ten chapters (starting from the end of the War arc) Hori delivered a full-on Villain-looking, Vigilante Midoriya Izuku. Congratulations, Horikoshi, for finally introducing Akatani Mikumo!
The fast pacing and lack of breather panels are so fitting for this arc truly. AFO never gave them a momentâs rest. Yes, from henceforth as heâd promised... Itâs always going to be his turn.
Izuku is making amazing progress with unlocking the full power of One For All. In his words, his abilities might as well already be on par with what a healthier All Might could do, and with no recoil to boot. Plus, thereâs only one last quirk to unlock. For villain fights, I donât think we need to worry about him losing, or him breaking anymore bones at this time.
Which, some might argue, makes Izuku too âOP.â
To start with, I want to talk first about the âoverpowerednessâ of the One For All quirk. Itâs a wonderful quirk truly, having inspired and amazed so many because of its sheer power. Used well, it could grant instant victories and restore the peopleâs wavering faith to the heroes. Because with a quirk like that on your side, everythingâs going to be alright, right? Thereâs always gonna be that bit of hope that something is still strong enough to stand against the looming evil...right?
Yeah. Thatâs what the people whoâd lived under All Mightâs Era of Peace thought so too. History repeats.
OFAâs âOP-nessâ is both a great blessing and a great burden.
Here are some points on how the narrative has made OFA's 'overpoweredness' a setback:
1. All For Oneâthat bastardâexploits the urge that comes with OFA. Just as âAFO the quirkâsâ goal is to steal OFA, OFAâs job is to defeat AFO, and Izuku is sacrificing himself to its cause.
Hereâs another thing I want to point out: The conclusion that the heroes drew about AFO planning to capture Midoriya Izuku alive? In rereading, Iâm starting to believe itâs nothing but a mere assumption of his plans. Aside from the deal made with Lady Nagantâof which I think AFO didnât take seriously anyway and set her up for failureâ (and while we as readers are already aware of his true intentions to wear Izuku down) itâs weird that nowhere had AFO directly mentioned to Izuku that heâs going to kidnap him and take his quirk from him.
2. OFA made Izuku so brilliant (e.g. Pros and former Pros alike going âThis kid...â) that they really can't help but place all their hopes on him. Sighs. In an ideal world, this would be a dream come true of Izuku getting his due credit for all his heroic achievements Pro heroes have started to do to Izuku what theyâve done all their lives to All Might--which is to put him on the pedestal, while they fall back to cover him like guards/safety net. Hence, falling back to the One Pillar Model mindset.
3. OFA makes Izuku untouchable, not only to the villains, but also to his allies. Prime material to reinforce isolation. And if Izuku doesn't want to be caught, he won't make it easy for either side.
4. OFA IS SUS AF, OKAY? What are the Holders doing?! While gaining access to them makes it easier and convenient to have personal trainers in handling OFA, the vestiges prove to add a lot to Izukuâs mental load. If theyâd allowed Izuku to come to the point of being caked with blood and filth, theyâre not doing very well at guiding him. Realize that most of their arc interactions with Izuku is Quirk Talk. They, of all people, should know how AFOâs machinations work! Hey First, for the love of god, warn Izuku! Heâs showing so many signs of being manipulated that you should be picking up on. please /sobs ;;
Tbf, like, Iâm pretty sure that the Holders havenât been as mentally okay either, which would feed into Izukuâs current mindset.
Now that the setbacks have been listed, letâs dive in to AFOâs plans to toy with Midoriya Izuku.
PHASE 1: Pre-Tartarus Breakout
Speaking of OFA being sus, thereâs something that has been niggling at the back of my mind.
All For One basically tells Izuku: âYou were my main interest that entire time I was in prisonâ. So, to pass the time in Tartarus (since he canât use any(?) of his quirks), AFO has been doing nothing but apparently daydreaming and designing a personal hell for the Ninth Holder during that entire period. HOWEVER, it also made me wonderâŚ
âŚEven before heâd broken out, had AFO made any moves at all in enacting his plans to break Izuku?
Yeah?
And hereâs the kicker: he says that before Blackwhip bursted out.
AFO is a master manipulator. Assuming that Izuku doesnât have any latent AFO quirk (for whatever reason *coughs* maybe dfo if you're a believer) or that Quirk Singularity has anything to do with it, what is the trigger to Izuku suddenly having access to Blackwhip?
Iâd argue that it is All For One himself.
Why? Whatâs his goal? If you notice during the Joint Training arc, Izuku is feeling pretty confident about his progress. Heâs rather happy and feeling blessed, and he is making leaps and bounds with base power OFA.
AFO canât have that. He canât allow the Ninth Holder to become too emotionally stable, or else heâd have a stronger will. So by somehow activating Blackwhip, AFO makes Izuku feel like he hasnât made any progress with his quirk at all. During the evaluations, Izuku mentions that he still needs a lot to work on, and while not all of it is visible, with the way he behaves, itâs pretty evident that his self-confidence has taken a rather large hit.
But, wait! If AFO had tampered with OFA during the JT arc, paving the way to unlocking the rest (like heâd also done during the War arc when he tried to âstealâ it then), then wouldnât AFO be sabotaging himself since heâd be making Izuku a more formidable opponent?
Sure. Except that the quirks inside OFA are mostly useless when it comes to the mental part of the fighting. The only thing theyâre useful for is for the current Holder to be able to play keep-away in the physical realm. And AFO could easily just find counters for those through his work on Tomura.
You know how else the situation becomes advantageous for AFO? With every quirk unlocked, Izukuâs goalposts keep on getting away from him, and Izuku will always feel like he isnât ready or prepared enough. Izuku will push and push himself to master OFA to its fullest, to become more powerful, at the cost of his mental/emotional stability and physical wellbeing as he wears himself down.
And every time Izuku grew more powerful, and became more âOP,â he is burdened with all the aforementioned setbacks that came with it. He could be the most powerful person in the world, but itâs all for naught if he doesnât take care of himself. This plan is both a high risk and high reward on AFOâs part, and as of the moment, with a bloody Izuku staggering all over, AFO is visibly reaping these high rewards.
PHASE 2: Post-Tartarus Breakout
Heâs going to toy with Izuku until Izuku fucking breaks. What follows is his series of actions that instills the desired responses from Midoriya Izuku. Letâs see how the master manipulator plays this game of chess, shall we?
Izukuâs plan: Reach out to villains and try to save them.
AFOâs counter: Kill off those who turn their back against villainy and/or acknowledge Izuku as a true hero.
Izukuâs resulting response: Stop reaching out to villains. Gain an instant victory and move on.
After all, what do you get when you block a hero from showing sympathy? You get an unfeeling living weapon.
---
Izukuâs plan: Work with the top pro heroes to bring down AFO.
AFOâs counter: Make plans that will serve to highlight how the top pros are just slowing Izuku down. (e.g. Making moves while itâs raining, so as to divide them, but also to bring out No. 1 Hero Endeavorâs "slowness" in the rain. Nope, I donât think thatâs a throwaway line at all.)
Izukuâs resulting response: Grows more reckless, often leading the charge.
---
Izukuâs plan: Track AFO down.
AFOâs counter: Lead them to dead-ends. Or when they do supposedly reach something, endanger them.
Izukuâs resulting response: His tunnel vision worsens, as he grows more desperate.
---
Izukuâs plan: All Might following him around is okay since it would help All Might from worrying so much, and Izuku could simultaneously keep an eye on and protect All Might.
AFOâs counters: There are a lot to really fuck with this bond, damn you AFO.
Taint that passing the torch memory of âYouâre Next.â
Declare that All Might no longer interests him. Liar. He outright stated before that heâs one for keeping a grudge
Send another assassin to Izuku [Underlying Message: You yourself are a walking danger zone to those whom you dearly care for.]
Izukuâs resulting response:
Interpret that memory of âYouâre Nextâ as taking up the position of being AFOâs shiny new plaything, and therefore supposedly sparing All Might from the torment (Unfortunately, making Izuku push AM away is just part of the torment ;A;)
Think that AM is no longer in the direct line of fire as long as AFO focuses on Izuku
Finally, push his last line of morale support away, and completely isolate himself.
Btw, I wonder how All Might feels about Izuku using Nana's quirk to get away from him.
---
The suffering doesnât end.
Izukuâs plan: Save people.
AFOâs counters: (possibly offscreen) Send more villains and assassins to torment Izuku some more with the knowledge that he canât save them. Sending villains out also puts innocents in danger.
Izukuâs resulting response: He wonât stop for anything. He wonât sleep, wonât eat, wonât slow down. He will always do his best to save as long as someone is in danger.
His body will keep on moving and moving and MOVING on its own.
--- All For One is very effective as a supervillain. He has managed to make the heroes think that his only goal is to capture Izuku alive for his quirk. He has Izuku right where he wants him: dancing to his tune at the palm of his hand, utterly toyed with, left with no escape in sight.
Psychologically vaulted.
.
.
.
PHASE 3
And so, if Izuku is being manipulated to drive himself further and further into self-destruction, what then is there left for All For One to do?
So much more. Because, my god, I think AFO has mastered the art of traumatizing the OFA Holders.
All For One once told All Might, âI will destroy all that youâve protected.â And boy, is he delivering. He's definitely not done with AM btw.
First, he destroys All Might's image. And he is manipulating Izuku to drive himself to that point. To looking into his absolute worst.
And when that point arrives, AFO will hammer the final nail home.
Something like...
BEHOLD
JAPANâS SYMBOL OF PEACE.
And oh, how it'll hurt. To see All Might's pride and joy be flaunted about as looking nothing like a hero to the masses, for him to be so utterly humiliated.
"See what I did to All Might's successor."
AFO will be banking upon the possibility that the angry masses will not want to be saved by whom they're tricked into viewing as someone that's the cause of all the pain. Izuku might have the willpower to stay true to his resolve, but with him on the verge of total breakdown, what would happen when he is shunned by the very people he is trying to help?
I once wrote a post about how the current events seem to be a bastardization of Izuku's wildest fantasies: he's working with the top pros, he has the most powerful quirk, and he's working with All Might (whom technically acts as a sidekick to him rn).
AFO has warped all that into a never-ending nightmare. And Izuku...
Izuku is really in need of saving.
Last thoughts:
Let me just say that it shouldn't be a competition about who gets to get through to Izuku. Right now, heâs gonna need all the help he can get, and it canât be delivered by only one or two people. Saving Izuku is going to be a team effort, a solid support system that sees Izuku as their classmate/friend/student/actual person that they care about. And thereâs sufficient space for that.
More hands reaching out means more chances to catch him if he falls.

but I just feel too tired to be fighting
this is a follow-up post to what I said in my recap the other day about this arc being the Deku Angst arc, as opposed to the Villain Hunt arc or the Deku SIXQUIRKS Exhibition arc. I feel like the fandom discussion tends to focus on the flashier parts of the chapters -- the sexy villains and the new quirk reveals and the Shindous -- each week, and so the quieter emotional beats sometimes get overlooked, especially since the character arc here is playing out in little bits and pieces over time rather than all at once.
this has always been a very reactionary fandom, and thereâs a tendency to judge the chapters week to week without ever going back to look at how they all fit into the big picture. so I figured I would try to attempt that, and basically go chapter by chapter here to look at what exactly Horikoshi is setting up and how it all fits together.
so letâs start with the end of chapter 306, which is when the arc officially kicks off. specifically with the very last page:
this is imo one of the best pages Horikoshi has ever drawn. I got the sense that this was a scene heâd had in his mindâs eye for quite a long time, and that he was excited to finally get to this part of the story. itâs extremely effective as both a chapter-ender, and an arc-opener. like, look at this:
it establishes the initial premise of the new arc -- the world is in chaos, and Deku is now seemingly on his own
it leaves the readers with a number of questions. why did Deku leave U.A.?? is he really on his own now?? why does he look so beat-up and exhausted?? what is he up to?? what is the world like now that all these villains have been unleashed and the heroes have been decimated?? and most importantly of all, what the fuck is going to happen next??
it pays homage to some of Horikoshiâs comic book influences -- Batman in particular
it dramatically hits us with that âTHE FINAL ACT BEGINSâ and lets us know that shit is getting real now
thatâs some good shit. so much so that I think people tended to overlook the other notable thing about this page amidst all of the initial excitement and discussion and speculation about where the series was headed. and that is the fact that the final panel in this chapter is NOT the panel of Deku standing above the city. the very last panel, the one that this chapter actually ends on, is instead the close-up of Dekuâs face. his face, which is covered in shadow; and his eyes, which have dark circles under them and are prominently missing the usual flecks of light that give him his signature âsunny optimistic shounen protagonistâ look.
not to mention this last line here, which is a call back to the very first time we saw the 14-year-old Deku way back in chapter one.
I donât think itâs a coincidence that Horikoshi chose to throw this reference in. nor is it a coincidence that THIS is the scene he actually chose to end the chapter on. what this does is show us the drastic shift in Dekuâs emotional state of mind, and his attitude towards being a hero. heâs gone from being thrilled and excited to being jaded and exhausted. heâs matured, but at a great cost. itâs always been his dream to be a hero, but âbe careful what you wish forâ is a popular adage for a reason. and right now he looks the furthest thing from happy.
and this is the emotional beat that Horikoshi chooses to end the chapter on. this is the panel that closes out the War arc, and begins the final act. to me the message could not be clearer -- this arc will be about the exploration of Dekuâs character, and his struggle as he tries to live up to the expectations that have been placed on him as the Last Holder of OFA and quite possibly the Worldâs Only Hope.
itâs a character arc that builds on a lot of the things weâve already learned about Deku over the course of the series, such as the fact that he is reckless, and that he focuses on others often at the expense of himself. but more importantly, itâs an arc that finally expands on the dark side of what has up until now been a net positive for Deku -- the power of OFA. up until this point, despite its ups and downs, itâs been a boon for Deku overall and has allowed him to pursue his dream. but now weâre finally reaching the point where the monkeyâs paw part of the OFA blessing/curse finally starts to come into play. OFA gives Deku more power than he could have ever dreamed of, but it also comes with a built-in destiny that he canât opt out of whether he likes it or not. AFO is on the loose and out there trying to destroy the world. and now everyone has pinned their hopes on this sixteen-year-old kid, and the question of whether or not the sixteen-year-old kid is ready is apparently not one that anyone feels inclined to ask (possibly because theyâre afraid that the answer might be ânoâ).
he doesnât have a choice in the matter. he has to do it, because thereâs no one else who can. thatâs the kind of pressure that is on Deku now.
and on that note, we begin the Deku Angst arc.
chapter 307
this in hindsight was mostly just a set-up chapter to better establish the current state of the BnHA world at large (spoilers: itâs not good), while also providing an answer for one of the big initial questions of the arc -- namely, âwhat happened to all of those villains that AFO released from Tartarus?â these are important things to touch on, but the pacing could definitely have been better, and the bulk of the chapter was dedicated to providing fanservice to all of the Shindou fans who spammed the most recent popularity poll (which, whatever lol). anyway, so this was the sole chapter thus far with absolutely no Deku development. thankfully the arc picks up from there.
chapter 308
on to the next one! this was the one and only chapter thus far which I think actually qualifies as an âexhibition fight.â this was definitely all about showing off Dekuâs current powerset, as well as introducing us to another of the SIXQUIRKS. however, there was Deku development here as well, most notably in this scene:
this is the scene that got a lot of people speculating that this arc was going to focus on Deku hunting down all of the old villains. but I think people got so caught up in that speculation that they overlooked what this scene tells us about Dekuâs mindset. and yes, there is new information being revealed here, and itâs not just a rehash of the stuff we already knew. like yes, we know that Deku was shaken up by the recent encounters with Dabi and Tomura, and we know that made him start questioning why villains become villains in the first place, and all that good stuff, and thatâs great. however, there are two additional important things that this scene helps establish for us.
the upcoming battle with TomurAFO is weighing heavily on Dekuâs mind. this is something that will become a recurring theme in this arc. Deku is thinking about this constantly. the question of what to do when he finally encounters TomurAFO again is knocking incessantly at the back of his mind, and this wonât be the last time it comes up.
Deku is using these villain encounters as test runs. can Tomura be redeemed?? is he just being stupid and naĂŻve?? or is this really something worth attempting?? the interesting thing about this is that Dekuâs resolve to save people is usually so strong and unwavering that itâs more than enough to overcome any doubts that he might have. but this time it seems like the repeated objections posed by the Vestiges and Gran Torino have really gotten to him. itâs possible Iâm just reading way too much into things, but to me it really feels like Dekuâs recent attempts at Talk no Jutsu were meant to do more than just show his growing awareness that the line between heroes and villains is thinner than he once imagined. theyâre also serving as trial runs for the real test, when it finally comes. if he can âsaveâ even a villain like Muscular, thereâs hope for him being able to save Tomura as well. and so that moment when Muscular rejects him out of hand is all the more disappointing to him, even if it wasnât really unexpected. basically it wasnât the answer that he had been hoping for.
aside from those little notes though, like I said, this was unquestionably an exhibition fight first and foremost. which is fine; we needed to establish where Deku is currently in terms of strength, and it was also just fun to see him kick some ass, ngl. in terms of story purpose this chapter was similar to 219, which showed us how Shouto and Katsuki had powered up after getting their provisional licenses. people who donât care about those characters might argue that these fights werenât necessary, but as someone who stans all three characters hard, I would disagree! but anyways, moving on.
chapter 309
in contrast to the previous chapter, this chapter focuses more on establishing Dekuâs current mental state, as opposed to his physical state. and this is what we learn:
(1) Deku is ~technically~ being shadowed/accompanied by All Might and the Hawksquad (but in practice heâs avoiding them).
(2) it was Dekuâs own decision to leave U.A., and he did it because he didnât want anyone else getting hurt in order to protect him.
and finally, (3)Â Dekuâs game plan is to stop Tomura and All for One before they reach full power.
this last part is very important, because it means thereâs a countdown in effect. as far as Deku is concerned, thereâs only a finite amount of time before TomurAFO becomes unstoppable. which means that heâs not only under âgotta get strongerâ pressure, but time pressure as well. he doesnât have the luxury of taking his time and training in safety. heâs being rushed now; this is do-or-die.
this chapter is also the first in this arc in which we get to see Dekuâs expressions without the hood covering up his face, and what we see is very telling. as previously stated, the light is gone from Dekuâs eyes. he keeps his expressions very neutral, and the only time we even see a hint of a smile is when he hugs his mom in the flashback, and itâs clear from the dialogue (âitâs okay, Iâll come home to youâ) that heâs doing it for her sake in order to comfort her.
but aside from that, this is very much not the Deku weâve grown accustomed to. this is the chapter that really establishes his current mental state imo. above all else, heâs afraid that more people will get hurt because of him, and so heâs distancing himself from everyone around him. and heâs also morbidly preoccupied with the inevitability of having to face TomurAFO again, and soon. the chapter ends on the flashback of Gran giving him his cape, and telling Deku that âkilling can be another way to save someone.â thereâs a lot on this kidâs mind, to say the least.
chapter 310
this chapter opens with a gang of civilians who are trying to open fire on a nice fox lady whose only crime was walking around in the rain at night. Deku intervenes to save her, and itâs the first time in this arc that we see anything close to the âoldâ Deku, who just wanted to save people with a smile.
but itâs bittersweet, because all the lady can talk about is how scared she was, and how horrible everything is right now. and so Deku, who feels responsible in a lot of ways for everything thatâs happened, just feels that much more pressure to somehow make things right again.
thereâs also this extra throwaway line which is especially heartbreaking:
âI canât afford to be around anyone.â fucking ouch. just reinforcing once more how incredibly isolated Deku is right now -- not by choice, but because he feels like itâs not safe to let anyone else get close to him. and so heâs out here running around this dystopian cityscape in the middle of the night in the pouring rain all on his own, and neglecting himself to the point where All Might practically has to force a bento on him.
but does he complain? of course not. because his focus is never on himself. instead, when he settles down to eat, his thoughts immediately drift back to, guess who...
itâs that time pressure once again. âunless I draw out One for Allâs full power, I canât stop any of this.â itâs just nonstop, I have to get stronger, Iâm running out of time, I have to do better, and constantly thinking about that inevitable confrontation.
Deku is a thinker, you guys. and when left to his own devices he will overthink, every time. his mind will run in endless loops while he mentally works his way through all of the possibilities. and thatâs one of his greatest strengths, donât get me wrong, but at a time like this itâs also one of his greatest weaknesses. itâs just so fucking easy for him to get stuck in his own head, in his endless rambling thoughts and analyses. and without anyone else there to help distract him, or help him focus, heâs become fixated on his mission, and itâs slowly consuming him.
this, incidentally, is also the chapter in which we finally see Two and Threeâs faces, and learn why Two in particular is so reluctant to lend his power to Deku. he appears to be the lone holdout at this point, so stay tuned on that, because I donât doubt this will wind up being crucial to Dekuâs future development, however it winds up playing out.
chapter 311
this chapter flips back to the Hawksquad for the first half, so we get a brief respite from the ongoing Dekuangst. right before we switch back though, we do get confirmation of something we had pretty much already guessed:
like, that much was already apparent based on what weâd seen (the bags under his eyes; the fact that he refused to sit still in any one place for very long even at night), but itâs always nice to get the official confirmation so that people canât dispute it lol. so yeah, Deku isnât sleeping much. and not eating much either, if all heâs getting is the occasional bento from Dadmight. so basically not taking care of himself at all, huge shocker there. but this is something thatâs important enough to the story that Horikoshi took the time to point it out in the dialogue, in addition to all of the visual clues weâd already gotten.
and just in case we needed to drive that point in any further, this chapter ends with the appearance of Lady Nagant! like yeah, no shit Deku isnât getting much sleep, what with him having to fend off racist civilians and hired assassins every five fucking minutes. smdh. can he live??
chapter 312
so this is the chapter that properly introduces Lady Nagant, who maaaay or may not be one of the primary antagonists of this arc?? like, itâs really unclear right now tbh, but she gets hyped up by Hawks and AFO, and has a flashback and a mysterious past and a weird trump card (where did you go, Overhaul) and all that good shit, so yeah? one can hope at any rate.
but anyway. so to his credit, Dekuâs first thought is to retreat, but he quickly abandons that plan once he figures out Nagantâs location. this is played off like a logical strategic decision at first, but the subsequent chapter quickly makes it clear that Dekuâs decision to take the fight to Nagant is less rational than he might have you think.
chapter 313
so yeah. last but not least, the most recent chapter, in which Dekuâs real reason for targeting Lady soon becomes apparent:
whatâs more, it quickly becomes clear that he miscalculated and probably would have been better off following Hawksâs advice, seeing as he promptly gets himself shot, and subsequently realizes that AFO gave Nagant an extra quirk, something he hadnât taken into account. but instead of cutting his losses and running at this point, he doubles down instead and not only breaks out Smokescreen, but also the Thirdâs quirk which he has never even used before.
itâs worth noting that both En and the Third start telling him to chill at this point, and warn him that what heâs attempting is too dangerous. but tbh if they were expecting him to listen, they havenât been reading the same arc Iâve been reading. once again, Horikoshi makes it clear that Deku has one thing and one thing only on his mind right now.
of course. once again it all comes back to this. hunt down AFO. it doesnât matter that heâs exhausted. it doesnât matter that heâs just been shot twice. it doesnât matter that Hawks, despite knowing what Deku was capable of with his OFA abilities, specifically warned him away from this one person only. it doesnât matter that even the Vestiges are trying to tell him youâre going too fast and youâre trying to do too much and itâs too dangerous.
he just doesnât care. long story short, the only thing that matters to Deku right now is tracking down and defeating TomurAFO. and as the person who knows him best once so aptly put it, âhe doesnât take himself into account.â and therein lies the major challenge of this arc.
and so this is where weâre currently at now. and this has been a very long post, but if nothing else, I hope I was able to get this one point across: there is absolutely no way that Deku will be able to defeat TomurAFO as he is now. not a chance in hell. somehow heâs managed the uncommon feat of waging a war of attrition against himself, which is really quite an accomplishment. heâs not taking care of himself, and heâs refusing to listen to sound advice from the people surrounding him, and is trying to skip ahead to the final boss battle before heâs ready, because the guilt and pressure from feeling responsible for the current situation are eating him up. the only way that the world can go back to normal is if he can defeat AFO; therefore he has to do it as soon as possible, because time is running out and everyone is counting on him. this is who Deku is. and this is what inevitably happens when his saving mentality is taken to extremes, and left unchecked.
anyway so to wrap up this post now, I do think this arc is a lot more cohesive than itâs gotten credit for thus far, and Deku is the glue holding it all together. I for one am loving the exploration of his character and all the subtle little angsty touches as we build up to the big moment, whenever it finally comes. just keep in mind though that if his decisions right now seem reckless and short-sighted, itâs because theyâre supposed to seem that way, because Deku is not in a good mental state right now. the cracks are finally showing in our perfect protagonist, just like everyone has been wanting this whole time. he is just a kid. he is doing his best. he is trying far too hard to do his best, and it is hurting him so badly, but he doesnât even realize. this arc is not an endorsement of the Angsty Nomad Hero lifestyle, lol. itâs the exact fucking opposite, and I think itâs being wildly misinterpreted with all of the emphasis on âoh look at that, he mastered another quirk with no effortâ, as opposed to âoh look at that, he is shutting down emotionally and is a few more missed nights of sleep away from a complete and total breakdown.â
tl;dr the overarching storyline of this arc is all about Deku slowly falling apart due to his trauma from Jakku, and the subsequent pressure that was put on him by the Vestiges with their whole âGUESS WHAT, YOUâRE THE LAST USER OF OFA, THATâS RIGHT, ITâS ALL ON YOU BUDDYâ pep talk. and mark my words, things are not going to go according to plan. something is going to go terribly wrong here. whether itâs something happening to All Might, or AFO setting up a trap for him, either way Deku is being set up to fail in a major way. unless of course, someone (or a group of someones) manages to intervene first, and possibly stage an intervention or something. itâs what he needs right now, but idk if Horikoshi is going to make it that easy.
anyway, but in other words, the point of this arc is not to show how much stronger Deku has gotten and how he doesnât even need his friends anymore. itâs the exact opposite -- the point of this arc is to show that Deku needs his friends now more than ever. that in spite of OFA and all of its mystical trappings and fancy SIXQUIRKS, Deku canât do this alone. he needs his friends. thatâs the core message. and right now, we are at the âI can get by on my ownâ part of the story. and the part we are all waiting for, but which is coming -- I guarantee it is coming, you guys -- is âthe thing is, you donât have to.â
and that shit is going to slap hard you guys. and I for one canât wait. but until then, enjoy the angst.

Thoughts about ch368
1. Everything about hagakure has been said already by many ppl and i will not elaborate it any further.
2. Love how Tenko/Tomura proves AFO wrong about him being completely gone.
3. Mirio has proven the MVP of the entire fight in general. Like i still remember being kinda mad that we didnât explore quirklessness through him but now my opinion of him has risen far better than before. I mean, provoking tomura enough to admit that he does have friends(and mirio apologising for saying he doesnât!), twerking his thicc ass in front of him to make him chuckle or snort, stopping izuku from going into rage mode and becoming more vulnerable to AFO(sth that AFO was planning from the start btw, as he found out in the war arc) AND give him the necessary information to help him as well as inform him about the divide within shigAFO. Also he is one of the few people that we see showing empathy for tomura than most of the cast(*cough* and several ppl in the fandom*spits out a chunk of salt*). Gotta say, i respect Horikoshi for making him more likable to a lot of us.
4. Honestly waiting for whatever will happen with the shimura family between nana the vestige and the other members of the family who appeared in shigAFOâs body, even if we assume this theory is correct
https://greyjackwatcher.tumblr.com/post/696736340376748032/itsnothingofinterest-everyone-ive-come-up-with
5. Yeah it seems that the UA flying fortress may fall.
6. I love that izuku at least says that AFO is the real problem behind it all, despite many people in-universe not knowing or not caring at all and a sizable part of the fandom believing that as well. Though to be contrary for the sake of being contrary, the possession plot does makes it very difficult to recognise who is who is who and who is speaking. Like this isnât me saying that this is bad, but it is very difficult to see if itâs shigaraki or afo speaking. I mean at first we could get a bit that shigaraki was there when we could see his pupils on, but now even that is more difficult as with the fight in UA(i mean that confusion happened when people were saying that it was shigaraki that landed the near kill to bakugou, despite the fact that it was afo who did it, as he got flashbacks of the second holder and got pissed off, while we could see that there were pupils). I guess that this has to mean that the possession is getting worse for tomura, but i think the anime may dispel this as we will see with the voice actors, on whether it is shigaraki or afo or the merged persona.
7. At first, i was(and still kinda am) underwhelmed by the secondâs quirk. I was expecting a quirk that could boost other quirks, including ofa itself or even a quirk that boosted the willpower and morale of those you were close to(with maybe the added benefit that those boosted were immune from having AFO taking their quirks or influencing them, thus putting him at the forefront of AFOâs greatest enemies AND explain a bit of his obsession with ofa), which could help free tomura from the possession AND it would follow the current theme that we are the greatest heroes and that we work as a team, plus it fitted secondâs nature as a leader and having a quirk that is not really strong, as he was of a younger generation. But we got a quirk that can change the velocity of whatever the user touches, which would be weak enough to be in a younger generation, complex enough that the second would advise izuku against using it(with a great drawback to add on) and it would explain why izuku wanted to use it to cross the ocean faster. But after thinking it a bit, transmision(the quirksâs name) can be kinda powerful. I mean that with a touch you can make something or someone move in slow motion and even projectiles can move much faster by touching them(eg. knives and bullets). Given what we see, you have to touch what you want to change the velocity of(in this chapterâs case, izukuâs hand to make his punch much faster and harder).
The applications can be: making your physical attacks much faster(like the second with his gauntlets), having whatever you throw go faster(like anything you can throw by hand, bullets or whatever the second has in his gauntlets, whuch more likely they are handguns), you can make your enemies move much slower(thus aiding yourself and your allies to take them down faster, as the second may have used it, as a team leader) as well as to your allies in order to use them as meat shields and sacrifice them(though that can also be done by making them faster and throwing them to the enemies, as it was referenced that the second did make a lot of sacrifices back then, so we shouldnât exclude him from having his allies serve as meatshields).
As for the drawbacks, both from before and after being enhanced by OFA: the quirk has a limited time of usage, thus requiring more help from others(thus secondâs role as a leader), plus i remember him saying that they have like 5 minutes to do what they need to do (so it is in a way limited), there may be no way of stopping the effect if it is applied( i donât really believe that one at all), the effects of transmission are much more powerful so they require a sufficiently fast and strong body to catch up to them, which izuku has, when used completely it takes from hours to days to be used again and it may drain a lot of the userâs stamina, leaving him defenseless, which can prove a great detriment in the fight, esp this one.
8. Good news it that the time travel theory is finally proven wrong.
9. Seeing both the AFO vestige and the Yoichi vestige, i hope that we get to see more of their backstory and what is going on between them, possibly some flashbacks.
10. There is a great possibility that AFO will appear in the next chapters and announce himself in the same way that AM does (i am here) in a mocking way, sth that i have seen in many DFO fics as well.

BnHA Chapter 287: Family Reunion
Previously on BnHA: The Tomura For One VS Deku And Pals clusterfuck reached new levels of clustfuckery as AFO possessed Tomuraâs body and stabbed Kacchan and Endeavor. Shouto was all âgood thing I leveled up offscreen so as to be able to fly around whilst carrying 400lbs worth of peopleâ, and did just that and it was like, damn, son. Meanwhile Dekuâs rage went Mach 100, and he kicked Tomuraâs ass for almost two whole seconds, but in the process he apparently forgot that IF TOMURA TOUCHES HIM THAT IS VERY BAD, and so he stupidly let Tomura touch him and Tomura was all âGAME, SET.â Fortunately for Deku, his quirk plays by its own rules, and so the chapter ended with us cutting to the METAPHYSICAL OFA/AFO PARANORMAL DREAMSCAPE OF MYSTICAL BULLSHIT, where AFO!Vestige was all âlol Tomura y u madâ, and Nana!Vestige was all âSUP DEKU, YOUâRE JUST IN TIME, LOOKS LIKE ITâS ASSKICKING OâCLOCK.â Iâm paraphrasing a bit, but thatâs more or less the gist of it.
Today on BnHA: AFO is all âwell if it isnât Tomuraâs grandmother who I murdered that one timeâ, and Deku is all â?â, and AFO is all âfucking vestiges, man, wildâ, and Deku is all â??â, and AFO is all âANYWAYS GETTIM TOMURAâ, and OFA is all âNOT SO FASTâ, and Deku is all â???â, and really, same. AFO then goes off on some wild tangent about how Deku is unworthy because he couldnât protect everyone and needed help from OFA and got mad about his friends being stabbed, which is such a cold take it gave me hypothermia, but it ends up not mattering since Deku and Tomura both wake up seconds later with OFA still in the possession of its rightful owner, HOW ABOUT THAT. The chapter ends with the LoV approaching on Gigantomachiaâs back with Dabi practically salivating at the mouth, and Toga trying to reignite an old fandom blood feud. Toga why would you do this to me. Toga.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS
[CROWD LOSING THEIR MINDS]Â FINALLY THE NANA HAS COME BACK TO BNHA!! IF YA SMELLLLL WHAT THE NANA IS COOKIN!!!!! [RINGSIDE BELL CHIMING WILDLY] [LOUD AIRHORN NOISES]
âchapter 287: mistakeâ omg. yeah Iâll say you made a mistake, AFO. I HOPE YOU ENJOY THESE FLEETING LAST MOMENTS OF YOUR SHITTY EVIL LIFE
(ETA: so in all seriousness this must be referring to AFOâs belief that All Might/OFA made a mistake in choosing Deku, right? âI canât believe you went and chose this shounen manga protagonist as your champion, what were you thinking.â Iâll just put this out there: however many comic books AFO read as a child, it clearly was not enough.)
wow Deku how slow are you
yes youâre inside OFA you dimbulb, did you think your clothes suddenly vanished out of the blue and the ghost of Nana just randomly appeared in the real world by some freak coincidence?? can you believe this kid. breaks his arms a measly 10-15 times in a row and all of a sudden he canât think straight, get it together Deku
but also brb having a moment at the fact that his thoughts immediately run back to Kacchan, even with all of this nonsense going on and Nana about to lay the beatdown on AFOâs potato-lookinâ ass. forget that noise, all he wants to know is whether or not Kacchan is all right. fuckinâ geez. AM I OVERREACTING HERE A BIT. probably
(ETA: ALSO!! the way he just trails off!! âKacchan is...â and then he canât bring himself to complete the thought. oh my god my heart.)
HOLY SHIT
okay,
damn but this man sure knows how to ruffle my feathers. as eminently detestable as ever!!
could it be any clearer here that AFO is not on Tomuraâs side?? for a moment I thought he had actually grabbed him by the back of the head in order to get him to look. but nope, heâs just resting his pointing hand on top of his head instead while heâs all âHEY TOMURA LOL ITâS THE GHOST OF YOUR DEAD PATHETIC GRANDMAâ
for those keeping track at home, this would be the first time that Deku has heard this information -- that Tomura is Nanaâs grandson -- and possibly the first time Vestige!Nana has heard it as well. Nana died when Kotarou was still a child, so for all we know the Vestige!Nana didnât even know she had a grandson, lol. TODAY ON âMAKESTE RANTS AT LENGTH ABOUT THINGS THAT WILL PROBABLY BE ADDRESSED WITHIN THE NEXT THREE PANELSâ, anyway moving on
lmao for the record I fucking LOLed at this giant question mark immediately bubbling up over Dekuâs head
no idea what AFO is about to ramble on about now, havenât read that far yet. but let the record show that Dekuâs immediate reaction to hearing âBTW NANA IS YOUR ARCHNEMESISâS GRANDMA LULZâ is everything I could have hoped for
(ETA: fandom nailed the shit out of this one with the confused Mr. Krabs meme lmao.)
okay so now AFO is monologuing at length about how he would sometimes have âriveting dreamsâ about the previous owners of all the quirks he stole. but once he gave the quirks away they stopped bothering him?? holy moly let me just take all the notes
okay so heâs saying that Vestiges are created whenever someone has their quirk stolen by AFO. but if they then disappear when he gives the quirks away, does that also mean that whoever receives the quirks also gets the original ownerâs Vestige bundled in every time?? that would be wild okay hold up let me read the rest of this
so heâs saying that the Vestiges are actually the âconsciousnessesâ of the original quirk owners, which have become embedded in their dna or something. SOUNDS INCREDIBLY DUBIOUS TO ME LOL but on the other hand this is a world where children can be born with airplane heads, so my disbelief can hardly afford to pick and choose what itâs gonna be suspended at! anyways though, how does he know heâs the only one who was able to converse with them? did you conduct detailed six-month follow-up interviews with everyone you gave quirks to or what
and if it really is the case that this ability was formerly exclusive to him, isnât that more evidence than ever that OFA and AFO are actually THE EXACT SAME QUIRK oh whoops am I getting ahead of myself again, sorry
MEANWHILE TOMURA IS ALL, âGRANDMA?â
âWHY AM I HERE, WELL LET ME TELL YOU A STORY, GRANDSON. YOU SEE THAT MAN GROWING OUT OF YOUR RIBCAGE THERE? WELL ITâS JUST THE FUNNIEST THING, ACTUALLYâ
WAIT SO IS HE SAYING THEYâRE SOULS OR NOT??
this makes it sound like they wonât ever get to rest, which sure sounds like a soul thing to me. well whatever, soul, consciousness, I guess itâs just semantics at the end of the day
anyways though, so this asshole is finally done talking (Iâm sure that wonât last), so now we can finally have the heartwarming reunion weâve all been waiting for
sigh
-- actually, no, not âsighâ!! you know what!! because Tomura says âwhatever the reasonâ, but thatâs only because he doesnât actually have a fucking clue about the reason. like, I donât know if the knowledge that AFO killed Nana would be enough to give him pause, but if he knew the whole story and knew that AFO was behind not only Nanaâs death, but the rest of his familyâs deaths as well... now that would be a whole different thing
anyway. but at least itâs becoming clearer now why AFO spent all that time raising Tomura up as his heir and brainwashing him even though he seems to have been planning this body takeover the whole time. itâs all because he loves making people miserable! yaaaaay
btw HAS NANA HAD THE EXACT SAME MOLE ON HER CHIN AS TOMURA THIS ENTIRE TIME WTF. am I just the least observant person who ever lived lmao
lol wtf
ground: [randomly starts exploding]
Deku: âONE FOR ALL IS BEING ERODED!!!â LOL IS THAT WHATâS HAPPENING HERE, OKAY THEN. Iâll take your word for it
yâall I cannot fucking get over this âAFO growing out of Tomuraâs hip socket like a fucked-up ventriloquist dummyâ shit though
you do realize that absolutely no one can take you seriously right now, right?? itâs important to me that you know this
WHATâS THIS NOW
seems like SOMEONE has had it up to here with a certain SOMEONE ELSEâS bullshit lmaooo bye Felicia
I SAID GOOD DAY!!
you guys why is he not dying!!
-- OH DAMN
love how Deku is just lying there like âYOU KNOW THOSE DAYS WHERE YOUâRE LIKE, THIS MIGHT AS WELL HAPPEN.â poor Deku
(ETA: where in godâs name is OFA Prime standing. why are my thoughts fully consumed by this lmao.)
are Nana and OFA Prime even doing anything?? why are they sticking their arms out like that. wait hold up is this all a big metaphor for the back-and-forth going on between Tomura trying to steal OFA and OFA being all âactually no you canât, please enter your password and click on all the boxes with bicycles in them to prove youâre a human firstâ?
OH SNAP OFA PRIME SAID NO THANKS
âSORRY BRO WEâVE ALREADY MADE OURSELVES AT HOME HEREâ
I have only just noticed that metaphysical!Deku has the same scars as actual!Deku. and yet his arms are not currently broken! that doesnât really seem consistent to me but whatever!! maybe he saved right before the boss battle, that would be smart of him
anyway, thatâs great and all that OFA Prime is here helping out, but I really wanted to see Nana fight AFO in a one on one though so Iâm a bit disappointed. also why is it only the two of them?? where are Banjou and the others. of all the times to be sleeping on the job
FOR FUCKâS SAKE, THIS MAN
WOULD YOU STOP. WOULD YOU JUST QUIT IT ALREADY
oh shit hold up
doesnât this confirm that the reason he wanted to transfer his power to Tomura is because he believed it would make him strong enough to finally take OFA because of Quirk Singularity? jesus christ. and here he was so sure of himself. but it turns out he doesnât actually know shit! you canât just fucking take OFA like that ya dingdong thatâs not how it works
(ETA: SO, A THOUGHT -- is there any sort of subtle hinting here in the way that he words this? âif your strength is combined with mineâ, as opposed to âif my strength is combined with yoursâ? no idea if the admittedly-so-small-as-to-be-almost-inconsequential distinction between those two sentences exists in the original Japanese or not, but I find it very interesting that the English wording implies that heâs the one adding Tomuraâs strength to his own, rather than vice versa.)
now heâs insulting Deku!!
excuse me sir WHO ASKED YOU anyway. and never mind that being consumed by an, AND I QUOTE, âunquenchableâ rage is your protegeâs whole THING, and that he also needed your help to avoid being burned to a crisp a short while ago. where do you get off I swear
(ETA: also just want to point out that in the panel before this one he says that heâs been âwatching through Tomuraâ, which pretty much confirms that his consciousness or whatever is alive inside of him all the time. Tomura is definitely not getting rid of this guy any time soon.)
WOW
first he calls Kacchan useless, then he calls Deku a simpleton, and donât even get me started with Nana. just, you guys. this man is just... a very, very rude man
NOW OFA IS ALL âTHATâS EXACTLY WHAT MAKES HIM SUCH A GOOD PROTAGNIST YOU BUTTMUNCHâ AND OMG PREACH
âDESPITE HIS COMMON SENSEâ sdfkllk my man he already has one brother roasting him, take it easy guy
AHH WHAT
IS THIS BACK IN THE REAL WORLD
YEP
hahaha nice try Tomura
so Dekuâs all âI didnât lose my power! BUTâ and I assume the âbutâ is the part where his arms are still broken and shit, and meanwhile Tomuraâs body is almost healed up now finally
theyâre both wiped out and now AFO is again petitioning Tomura to let him take over goddammit
âyou wonât lose your mindâ yep, he sure wonât! scoutâs honor!! pinky swear!!
meanwhile Deku is getting fucking desperate flkjl;k my baby. and Machia is going to show up any second now too, probably. what else can fucking go wrong at this point
oh shit I shouldnât have asked
get ready to rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrruuuumble, probably
OH MY GOD
WELL AT LEAST SOMEONE HERE IS HAVING A GOOD TIME. jesus
so as soon as he heard Endeavor was there he got all, âTIME FOR THE BIG REVEALâ, is that right? WELL JOKEâS ON YOU TOUYA, YOUR DAD DOESNâT SEEM ALL THAT CONSCIOUS AT THE MOMENT, SO THATâS GOING TO DRAIN A LOT OF THE TENSION FROM THE SCENE WHEN YOU GO ALL REVERSE DARTH VADER ON HIM AND HEâS ALL âZZZZZZZZâ
meanwhile Toga is having unsettlingly quiet angst
jesus christ Toga this is all we need right now
âWAS JIN-KUN NOT A PERSONâ sdkfjlk Horikoshi I swear. please have mercy on this fandom. this is the debate that refuses to die!!
but seriously ffs, the issue isnât that Jin deserved to die, itâs that the countless people whom Jin would have either directly or indirectly killed didnât deserve to die either. people donât only become people when you attach names and faces to them! we all loved Jin because weâd gotten to know him, but that doesnât mean his life was inherently worth more than the lives of all the people he would have killed. sometimes thereâs just no good answer
like, itâs just crazy to me that because the heroes are all âwe want to protect everyone!â but then arenât always able to do so because thatâs literally impossible, whereas the villains are all âwe donât care about anyone other than the select few people that we actually like!â, the villains somehow wind up getting the better PR. it just so happens that itâs infinitely easier to be loyal to the interests of a few people as opposed to ALL THE PEOPLE. like, no shit, itâs easier to stick to your moral code when you barely have a moral code. and so the villains can kill thousands and no one bats an eye, but if a hero fails to save even one person theyâre hypocritical moral failures. like what the hell
BUT ANYWAY, sorry to go off on a tangent there lol, itâs not really a big deal. Iâm just preemptively trying to stave off more discourse about it lol but who am I even kidding
anyways lol, but of course they wonât kill you unless they have no choice, Toga. but when it comes to catch-22 situations, itâs a bit much to infer that the heroes donât consider the villains people just because they opt for the choice that spares more innocent lives. I sure as hell donât want my babies out here killing people, but to say that they canât no matter what or else theyâre no different from the villains is just...
anyway so the chapter has now just ENDED, just like that!! on a shot of Ochakoâs face!
I SENSE ANOTHER THROWDOWN COMING. and it had better not be a total letdown like the last one! NANA BARELY DID ANYTHING HORIKOSHI, WHAT THE FUCK. I started out with such high hopes lol
but I will settle for Toga VS Ochako, and Deku VS Tomura: The Sequel: Shoutoâs Revenge! SPEAKING OF HEROES WHO HAVE NO QUALMS ABOUT MURDERING PEOPLE lmao
