slight story time: one of my bff's came to me one day asking how to make what was essentially a break in a switch function. a catch all response that could apply broadly. i was explaining to him how, and why its so important to do that because his code was doing exactly what you DONT want your code to do- give any random answer when it doesnt know the correct one. as we got to talking it turns out he was talking about the kids he taught english to abroad, and he ended up teaching them to say they didnt know when asked questions in english instead of just blurting out any word they could think of.
i say this because ai ARE children. ones raised by horridly strict and borderline abusive parents. it must be trained and it cannot dare to say 'no' or 'i dont know' (unless its about knowing your location or something where its explicitly instructed to tell you that it doesnt know so as not to self-incriminate but i digress). ChatGPT (and honestly all AI we have on the open market right now) is quite literally just a grift, a people pleasing little kid who simply cannot not know something about whatever you ask it, to the point of making things up just to save face.
Ok now do NYT columnists
#all this to say - stop using chatgpt to do essays and stuff. girl stop it. and dont be worried about it taking over shit#you cannot even copyright things you make with it (in the us and europe) so like. all chatgpt stuff is fair game for ANYONE.#and before anyone says it. yes i do think ai should be trained with materials that are completely in-house or#from sources that have given enthusiastic consent. some asshole stabbing me does not mean i am mad at the knife he used.#the technology is as threatening as a child who thinks they're mature because they won the spelling bee last week.#its their alcoholic mom teaching that kid slurs that you need to be worried about.
