Established connection that was never utilized:

These two dueled one another for up to one thousand days, fought each other for the Numeron Code, and was the whole reason Astral was created in the very first place. 

Despite that, the show never went into anything with their cosmic dynamic. Or even acknowledged it much.

But think of all the missing scenes, or even canon compliant Added scenes, in fics you could produce by brainstorming even a little bit about them. 

There’s a variety of fun tropes to play with;

enemies-to-lovers, forbidden attraction, pure angel x fallen angel, garden of eden symbolisms, second chance, secret attraction, doomed yaoi, “was never meant to be, but became anyway”. 

To name just a potential few.

There’s a lot they could teach each other:

Astral’s arc through the series involved learning the slow acceptance of chaos, but a lot of it was surface level and from a very young / emotionally immature point of view. Don Thousand is the self proclaimed deity of chaos, its harbinger. Embracing it cost him his entire home. Think of the new emotions Astral could experience from learning about his early home world if he was forced to listen to Don Thousand’s perspective of it. Especially now that Astral has opened that connection to chaos again in their world . . .

On the other side, think of how Don Thousand might be affected by being forced to understand Astral’s innocent but earnest perspective. Astral represents everything Don Thousand lost when he was cast out and banished. To then have this same being allow your side to be told, for once, and defy its programming to do so . . . 

Make Shit Up. No one can stop you.

The ship doesn’t exist right now. You have the power to forge their dynamic using all the creative liberties you desire.

And again, it’s not like there’s nothing in-canon tying them together. There’s actually a lot. So you can either have a fun blast digging for it, or just make up your own stuff from scratch. 

Creatively, its an untapped well.

2. What’s your most recent fic and how far do you think you’ve come?

This is a companion question to #1, about the first fic I ever wrote, which I discussed here. My most recent completed fic is Byzantine Perspective, part 3 of my Old Guard mer-person AU. Which is interesting because the first installment in that series, Negative Space, is the first thing I ever wrote for The Old Guard and is almost exactly like the fic discussed in #1, in that it is a collection of vignettes rather than a fully fleshed-out story. And even Byzantine Perspective is somewhat episodic. So I guess the answer would be... not all that far, but that's ok because I'm not dissatisfied with where I started. I am, at least, somewhat more disciplined about forcing myself to write the connective tissue instead of just the good bits.

10. Have you ever written for a fandom without reading other fanfic for it?

Well I have certainly not read, and have no inclination to read, any Secret of NIMH fanfic. But I don't know if that counts as "writing for a fandom." Similarly, I wrote an Old Guard/The Good Place crossover and have never read any Good Place fic (and have no inclination to read any), but I consider that written "for" TOG fandom with the Good Place bits just set dressing. (I don't think this particularly counts either, but I shared the news of my hamster's passing on Facebook by writing up a meeting between myself and the Death of Rats, which could be considered fanfic, and I've never read or wanted to read any Discworld fic.)

my Evil!Steven AU i made back in 2022

Dr Steven Boxleitner was a kind yet distracted scientist at the national institute of mental health but he was promoted to head scientist by Dr Valentine ( not an OC he's from the movie the secret of NIMH 2 ) and made to perform  an experiment on a mouse by turning it evil the experiment was a success and Steven began to enjoy his work brainwashing mice and other animals to do his bidding  taking sadistic pride in it. when he was about to turn Squeaky evil Squeaky managed to escape by biting steven and going to the Botsford house where Becky adopts Squeaky. some days passed and WordGirl met Dr Boxleitner he took WordGirl in as her Mentor but secretly he was preforming cruel and sinister experiments claiming its part of her training days passed and Steven found out that WordGirl is an alien.  soon after a month WordGirl discovered Stevens true intentions and berates him saying she found a new mentor Toby. Steven Boxleitner vowed revenge on WordGirl by creating an evil animal army to defeat her and take over the world with the aid of Professor Tubing. Soon Becky tells Squeaky and Toby her true identity as WordGirl

Out of curiosity, what would a Warrior Cats human au be like?

I’ve seen many interpretations of it and the most common one seems to be set in the past with the clans having a bit of a tribe-like life style. So far these are the legible ones. I can think of.

1. They are set as tribe-like groups in the past. Evidence: their “clan” ways of life, naming ceremonies and religion. Also, hunting, group / clan importance and etc.

2. They are set as modern humans in 1900s England. Evidence: location of clans and timeline.

3. They are set in England, around the 1500s. Evidence: the extreme importance of religion, xenophobic beliefs, superiority complex, battles and the occasional attempt to force outsiders to accept their ways of life as “superior”. That and Pinestar’s crusade could be an attempt at colonialism.

My absolute favorite take on a Warrior Cats Anthro-type AU is the stuff done by FortunataFox over on Furaffinity/Twitter/DA. She's heavily inspired by Redwall (a series I have not read) and her style reminds me a lot of Don Bluth's work, particularly in Secret of NIMH.

I can't recommend checking that out enough; her work is very inspiring to all of my takes on Warrior Cats, even non-anthro types.

As a side note I also just... don't like looking at human faces very much? Nor do I like drawing them or thinking about them. So Anonnie, I gotta be honest with you, I probably would not make a "Human" AU fdgfsdgdf You're gonna get anthro from me

If I did an anthro AU, it would be soft fantasy. A couple of small magic powers, some unique animal species. It would also look a lot more like manoralism than decentralized 'tribal' societies... though I'm iffy on the idea of really calling them 'tribe-like' because the phrase gets my goat--

Tribe-Like Society" is a phrase that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

The Zulu Kingdom and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy couldn't possibly be more different from a social perspective, yet they're both described as "tribal societies" because Colonialism... ANYWAY, not trying to get too into it, it's a really vague phrase that invokes stereotypes I don't hate the word Tribe itself but there is no 'tribe-like society', you get me? Indigenous societies are just as (if not more) varied than colonial ones but they tend to get boiled down to "tribe-like society". The term inherently crunches social groups down to an aesthetic-- something I try to avoid in worldbuilding. I heavily consider the territory and how that would shape their lives, then add a very strong cultural value for land stewardship, and work outwards from there, instead of starting with 'nature connection' and working backwards. Does that make any sense?

2. 1900s England Nah, I wouldn't be fond of that one. That would mean these cats have Capitalism, and I just can't imagine the Clans existing the way they currently do if they were under that economic system... at least, not the way that I really enjoy the Clans.

I like reading stuff where the fandom draws out their cultural practices, and the bonds and politics between the cats in the social groups. It would be a very different story if it was just post-industrial England, and there were like... factories, roads, work hours, employers, and... OH GOD what the HELL would the World Wars be for Warrior Humans??

3. 1500s England

I think this would also be a bit too far ahead. The absolute latest time period I'd look at for inspiration is Early Medieval England (5th to 11th centuries). The Clans are four/five distinct fiefdoms without a king that unites them, a city-state at the highest possible population.

When there isn't emphasis on the different groups, it stops feeling like Warriors to me, you know?

(side note; Crusade was the closest word I could find for Oakstar's campaigns, a pointless religious war of appeasement, they aren't exactly like the actual crusades which started in the late 11th century. After all-- I just look at history as inspiration, not to copy or make 1:1 recreations)
