Freestyle Moves
Fine moves from a kick scooterist around the Marina Bay. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
We stumbled upon these folks as we passed by and were blessed with some great moves from this and her fellow riders that I wish we had better gear with us on that day. Instead, I had to be content with a manual focus lens. For this shot, motion blur at the shutter speed of 1/60 second wasn’t great and so had need to be enhanced in post.

Towards a Secret Scooter Hand Signal
The Opportunity
Motorcyclists have a secret hand signal they use when they encounter each other on the road. (It's not really "secret" but they don't exactly advertise it either.) It's meant as a subtle sign of respect that says I see you and you see me and how fucking cool are motorcycles, be safe out there friend. It communicates all of that.
Jeep owners have this too, a hand signal called "The Jeep Wave", used to acknowledge another Jeep owner on the road. (From my research it seems as though in typical Jeep cult fashion they went way overboard with this one and have like 15 different versions of the wave. (I find this 50% ridiculous 50% aspirational.)
People who ride scooters should have this too. There's a lot of us out on the road these days, more and more all the time. Cruising along at 10-18 mph, angling for space in the increasingly crowded bike lanes.
The thing about scooters is they’re so fun, so when you see someone else on one there’s a sort of shared: We’re having fun, right? like when your dog looks up at you out on a walk.
The Problem
is that scooters extremely require you to have both hands on the handles at all times. Like to take one hand off to make some random hand signal would be psychotic, almost guaranteed instant death. So we’re sort of limited.
I have done a lot of searching online and no one else is talking about this or offering suggestions. Some might say this is due to lack of interest, but I assure you it’s just that everyone is paralyzed with fear/indecision about how to solve this problem.
The Solution
I've been experimenting with various options (head nod? coy foot twirl? idk) but here's what I think is our best option:
Keep both hands on the handlebars. Right hand stays gripping the handlebar firmly. On the left hand, extend 4 fingers up and out, while keeping the left thumb securely on the bar.
Why it Works
You still keep both hands on the wheel, averting certain disaster.
It's very subtle, so only other scooterists will likely see/appreciate it.
In its simplicity it holds incredible meaning: Hi, I see you, mutual respect, stay safe out there, how about these assholes on the mopeds, etc.
Next Steps
Not exactly sure how to spread the word about this. Hopefully other people with scooters searching for "secret hand signal for scooters" land here and it just takes off from there. Spread the word.

I've had my beloved scooter for about a month. One of my partners had initially said it was going to become my entire personality. They were correct; however, their correctness in this matter does not distract from the fact that, with much effort and suffering, I have relearned much of my previous motorcycling skills. I am a queer scooterist and moped enthusiast, but my first choice was a van, as I had planned to live in it and travel the continent, as nomads do. Despit that, I elected for a much more intimate option with which to see the world, as I am exposed to the elements. This is grand. I named my scooter Horse. I grew up with horses. I could even be reasonably referred to as a horse girl, seeing as I have one currently, albeit a fiberglass and aluminum construct. Either or, I may one day gather up my barest essentials, a tent and sleeping bag, and some gumption. Upon the assembly of this protagonist kit, I might just take a notion to ride off into the sunset. After all, that's what horses are known for, right? Surely, this harebrained scheme of mine, haphazard and ramshackle though it may be, will succeed. Sure, it may be solipsistic to label myself as the main character, but how else will I cope with the constant disassociation from the dreadful reality of... well, reality?
I, the lonesome heroine, will sit astride my horse and gallivant and bandy and carouse as heroines do. A saloon with insufficient doors and haggard ranch hands awaits me. Well, that and a whole lot of Big Papa Pickles™.
"Pickle barrel cowgirl," they'll call me. My vinegar brine stench will precede my arrival by at least a half a minute or more. Yes... Pickle barrel cowgirl...
Yeehaw

LeRoy Law: Floridian Cyclists and Scooterists: Are You Unknowingly Breaking DUI Laws? Find Out Now!
Welcome to the world of Florida's DUI laws, where even your leisurely bicycle ride or scooter jaunt could land you in hot water. Yes, you read that right. In the Sunshine State, the rules of the road extend beyond the confines of traditional motor vehicles. As your trusted West Palm Beach Dui Attorney, I'm here to shed light on these lesser-known regulations that could affect your daily commute or weekend adventure.
Whether you're pedaling your way through Palm Beach County or zipping around on an electric scooter, understanding the legal landscape is crucial. The consequences of a DUI conviction can be severe, impacting your freedom, finances, and future. Let's look at how these laws apply to cyclists and scooterists, and what you need to know to stay on the right side of the law.
Important Tips for Cyclists and Scooterists
Always be aware of your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels, even when not driving a car.
Understand that DUI laws apply to bicycles and electric scooters in Florida.
Seek legal representation immediately if charged with a DUI on a bicycle or scooter.
How Can I Help You?
With years of experience in handling DUI cases, I understand the nuances of Florida's transportation regulations. Whether you're facing charges for impaired driving on a bicycle or an electric scooter, I can provide the legal representation you need. My approach is thorough, ensuring that every aspect of your case is examined to protect your rights and minimize the legal penalties you face. I invite you to read my blog post on bicycle and scooter DUI rules and effects to gain further insights into your situation.
Can You Get a DUI on a Bicycle in Florida?
Yes, you can. Florida's DUI laws are not limited to motor vehicles. If you're cycling under the influence, you could face similar legal consequences as if you were driving a car. The law considers bicycles as vehicles, and thus, the same rules apply. This means that if your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is above the legal limit, you could be charged with a DUI. The penalties can include fines, license suspension, and even jail time, depending on the severity of the offense.
Florida Statutes Section 316.193 outlines the DUI laws and penalties applicable to cyclists.
Being charged with a DUI on a bicycle can result in a criminal record.
Legal representation is crucial to navigate the complexities of these charges.
Are Electric Scooters Subject to DUI Laws?
Electric scooters are indeed subject to DUI laws in Florida. While they may seem like a fun and harmless mode of transportation, riding one under the influence can lead to serious legal consequences. The state views electric scooters similarly to bicycles when it comes to DUI regulations. This means that if you're caught riding an electric scooter with a BAC over the legal limit, you could face penalties similar to those for a motor vehicle DUI.
Electric scooter legal guidelines are covered under Florida's DUI laws.
Penalties can include fines, community service, and mandatory DUI education programs.
Understanding these laws can prevent unexpected legal troubles.
What Are the Legal Consequences of a Bicycle DUI?
The legal consequences of a bicycle DUI in Florida can be quite severe. While it might seem less serious than a motor vehicle DUI, the state treats it with similar gravity. You could face fines, community service, and even jail time. Additionally, a DUI conviction can lead to a criminal record, which can have long-term effects on your personal and professional life.
Legal consequences include fines, license suspension, and potential jail time.
A DUI conviction can impact your employment opportunities.
It's essential to seek legal advice to mitigate these consequences.
What Are the Penalties for an Electric Scooter DUI?
Penalties for an electric scooter DUI in Florida can be as severe as those for a motor vehicle DUI. The state imposes fines, community service, and possibly jail time for offenders. Additionally, you may be required to attend DUI education programs. These penalties are designed to promote public safety and discourage intoxication while operating any form of transportation.
Florida electric scooter DUI penalties include fines and community service.
Offenders may be required to attend DUI education programs.
Legal representation can help reduce the severity of these penalties.
Hypothetical Case Study
Imagine you're enjoying a sunny afternoon in West Palm Beach, riding your electric scooter after a couple of drinks with friends. You feel fine, but as you zip through the streets, you're stopped by law enforcement. They conduct a sobriety test, and to your surprise, your BAC is over the legal limit. Suddenly, you're facing charges for driving under the influence, and the reality of Florida's DUI laws hits home.
This scenario is more common than you might think. Many Floridians are unaware that DUI laws apply to bicycles and electric scooters. The legal consequences can be daunting, but with the right legal representation, you can navigate this challenging situation. Understanding the law and your rights is the first step in protecting yourself from severe penalties.
